Jeff Teague has been solid as the Hawks' emergency starter at point guard this series since replacing the injured Kirk Hinrich.
After an inspiring win over Chicago on Sunday night, the Hawks are all even in their second-round playoff series against the top-seeded Bulls going into Game 5 in Chicago. But regardless of how the rest of this series plays out, there’s one important positive that is being overshadowed when it comes their future: They may have found a legitimate starting point guard in Jeff Teague.
Teague couldn’t get off the bench for Mike Woodson. He couldn’t get off the bench for Larry Drew either, which prompted the Hawks to deal for Kirk Hinrich when they sent away Mike Bibby. When Hinrich was injured at the end of the Orlando series and scratched for the second round, few expected Teague would be a competent replacement.
But through four games in this series, Teague probably has been the Hawks’ best and most consistent player. He has used his speed and is gaining more confidence in running the offense and guarding the NBA’s MVP, Derrick Rose.
“I have to give Jeff Teague a lot of credit,” Joe Johnson said after Sunday’s 100-88 win. “He has really stepped up and played big in this series. He had a few big defensive plays where he got steals and came down the court and he maybe could’ve taken the shot. But he pulled out and ran the offense. That’s big for a second-year guard. He’s been unbelievable.”
Hinrich, who could be available for the Eastern Conference finals if the Hawks go on to upset the Bulls, said his replacement is “playing great. He’s taken advantage of his opportunity. He’s been solid, good defender.”
Surprised?
“As long as he would just go out and play and not worry about the scenario or anything like that, I thought he would be just fine,” he said. “Obviously he has the ability and he’s fast and he can finish at the rim.”
After all of the franchise’s miscalculations at point guard, it could be that the search is finally over.

He has been great to watch. Might be done 4-0 if he wasn’t playing almost the entire game. My question is whether or not he’s a good enough distributor of the ball. Will he get enough assists?
We know he plays great D, can slash to the hoop, and hit some mid-rangers. Maybe the assists don’t matter as much on a team like this when you’ve got JJ, Smoove, and Al picking up assists from their spots.

Hinrich, JC and Bibby are exactly assist machines. Teague is going to be exactly what the Hawks need. LD is too stubburn to see that. We now need a more physical center and a small forward. We also need to have better coaching than we have had.
Will Hawks management recognize that? We we address our weaknesses or will we simply wait to see who is available for the minimun in the offseason.

Great to see this young man step it up and turn it on when it counts the most! Sometimes an opportunity is all you need. Love Captain Kirk, but you can’t have too many great players if you want the title.

No question–Teague has exceeded expectations. He has been an asset to the Hawks. Hopefully he can keep it up, and start to be a leader on the floor. The Hawks need someone to get the offense started and keep the ball moving–we have too many guys that are content to just throw up a contested outside shot.

Teague is only in his second year. His development has been stifled by coaches who won’t give him the minutes to develop his game. Teague has earned the starting point guard position in my opinion, going into next season. The Hawks could have a great foundation in Teague, Horford, and Crawford.
You have to trade great talent to get great talent in the NBA…it’s just that simple. Shake up the lineup for next season. Send Marvin Williams packing and possibly use Josh Smith as trade bait.

Now we need to get Marvin to develop a little hook shot–with that big rump and those long, gangly arms he could shoot it over most of the guys that guard him. Am I right?

what is it with Hawks head coaches not knowing what it is they have on their bench? We “threw in” Jordan Crawford in the Heinrich trade and he played well when given a chance in Washington. Luckily now we are playing Teague.
Hawks need to run w/ Teague in 2012 as the starter and Heinrich can come in off then bench assuming Jamal Crawford’s role – yes, Crawford will leave for more money.
Hawks should start focusing on Dwight Howard’s impending free agency in 2012 and get in position to make a run at him – not sure if we can because of possibly being “capped” out – but Hawks should try.
You gotta figure Dwight Howard would consider the Hawks given he grew up in the A-T-L. Anyway, as my buddy Jerry Macquire would say, …….”THAT’S THE PLAN!!!!!!!”……

It’s a good thing Hinrich got hurt and Drew was forced to play Teague or the Hawks likely would have dumped him in the offseason, then watched him turn out to become a good player with his new team. What does it say about Larry Drew that he played a washed up Mike Bibby, who could neither guard anybody or act as a legitimate point guard on offense, for half a season while Teague languished on the bench?
We’re now seeing the Jeff Teague that those of us who watched him play for Wake Forest remember. I remember him torching a UNC team that ended up winning the national championship for 34 points in an upset win. Ty Lawson, who is quick as anybody, couldn’t stay in front of Teague. Finally the Hawks have a point guard who can break down a defense and either finish or get an open shot for a teammate. Now if they’ll just put the ball in his hands in late game situations instead of having him hand it off to Joe Johnson and run to the nearest corner to let Joe play 1 on 5.

I was going to be a wise guy and say, “Well… isn’t that why they drafted him two years ago to begin with?” But the fact is that it seems that neither Larry Drew nor Woody got the memo. Also, when you consider the fact that the Hawks have had seemingly no interest in developing other recent first round picks such as Acie Law IV and Jordan Crawford, I must respectfully change my wise guy response to a more positive, “Way to hang in there, Jeff Teague!!!”

F-ck sample size. First of all Teague has done this all year whenever he has received playing time. Secondly consider the situation and the quality of opponent. I agree that he has to work on his ability to set up his teammates, but he’s in his second year and that will come in time. He’s a more athletic version of Tony Parker. Nothing against Kirk, and I wouldn’t wish injury on anyone, but if Kirk hadn’t been injured who knows how this franchise would have found a way to screw this up. That injury was a blessing in disguise.

I always wondered why Teague didn’t play more. The way he is playing now is basically the same way that he played in college, and the guy was ridiculously good at the college level. At first, I thought that his game must not play very well in the NBA. But, I’m now wondering if the coaching staff simply didn’t realize how good Teague really is. Kind of silly.

Actually I think it’s the opposite. He’s playing this well in spite of not having the chance to truly get into game shape. In the playoffs, you have plenty of rest days. But it’s remarkable that Teague’s lungs have been in good enough shape to go from not playing at all to playing over 40 minutes against a player as well-conditioned and as fast as D. Rose. Legs come into play more when you’re talking about jump shots on back-to-back games or on players who are in the mid-30’s. Think about it, the players who win the championship every year play more games than anybody and it doesn’t have a perceivable effect on their play.

Would like to see development over the summer on his jump shot, running the pick and roll and distributing on the man advantage fast break, if J.T. is going to be the starter next year. I sense Teague has been the offensive player given room as the Bulls try to stifle JJ and Crawford. Certainly, to this point in the series, Teague has been the antidote to the Bulls team defense. Now he has the momentum, you watch to see if he can continue to add to it.

Isn’t Teague the same guy who was torched for 44 the game before last? Why must we always annoint these guys as the next Bob Cousy, next Magic Johnson or whomever before they’ve really ever done anything?
Look at Jason Heyward now with the Braves….Hall of Fame before he ever faced the first pitch….the guy has not lived up to the ridiculous expectations as few can….
Starting point guard savior? And if he falls on his face these next 2 games? Let me guess….fire the coach, dump Teague, bring back Bibby?
2-2 in the conference semis is waaaay beyond where I ever thought this team would be. They can beat nearly anybody when Smith shows up and plays with some sense. THE PROBLEM IS that he’s just as likely to come out in game 5 and loaf, screw around and pout as he is to play hard and kick some butt….
Game 5 decides this series….we have to win this game, period, or it’s essentially over in 7….we all know that deep down….
I trust we’re taking the ole lunch pail with us back to Chicago….then again, this is the Hawks….who knows what to expect.

Woody is the reason Teague has been underdeveloped. He crushes young guards (Salim, Acie). By the time Drew got him, his confidence was so shaken, he was a shell of his former college self. Now that he’s in a position where he doesn’t have to worry about getting yanked, he’s stepped up.

You know. Most of the fans have been clamoring for Teague to play since LAST season. Anyone with any basketball sense knows that this team in particular needed a point guard who could run the floor/break, penetrate the defense, setup his more passive teammates and play good man on man defense. However the hawks dragged their feet in putting him in the lineup because simply put they evaluate talent as well as Charles Barkley hits a golf ball. Teague was on his way to Salim Studamire and Acie Law status if it wasn’t for Hinrich’s injury. As good as he is playing i am Disgusted that it took this long to play him. The only way a player truly gets better, especially a point guard is to actually PLAY THE GAME! What a novel concept.

You’re right, JeJe, LD does at times seem to be speaking out of both sides of his mouth. He probably has a very good career ahead of him as a politician after his coaching days.
There are, however, a couple of things going for JT over Kirk Hinrich. With Teague being much younger you would think that he has a lot of potential upside to be shown if given the chance to mature. With Kirk, what you see now is as good as it’s ever going to get.
In my mind though, probably the most important thing that JT has over Kirk is that – other than Joe – the ASG does not impress me as an ownership that likes spending money. I could see where the ASG just may try to impress, strongly even, upon our GM that it just may be much more efficient to lock up Jeff Teague long term and to see about trading Hinrich short term as Hinrich is making 9 mil and Teague is making just a tad under 1.5 mil.

You’re right Jordan crawford probably wouldn’t have as much freedom here as he does now in Washington. However he would provide you with a good punch off the bench. A punch we will need when we fail to resign Jamal…
Also, No not everyone can average 20 points with a bad team….Exhibit A.. Marvin Williams, Exhibit B…Sheldon Williams. The defense rest.

Reggie, I know right? People ask for the dumbest trades here…but I can see something like Marvin and Zaza for Kaman or Marvin for Thabeet. Both teams need a SF. GS has their C on Jordan and Houston doesn’t even care for Thabeet. Neither is the greatest C in the league, but ANYTHING at this point is better than Marvin.

the best 6th man replacement for Jamal Crawford is Shannon Brown. Highly explosive with great offensive skills and energy, perfect for the ‘Highlight Factory’. Let’s make a move to get him! Jamal Crawford and Marvin Williams for Shannon Brown, Matt Barnes and others. Matt Barnes will at worst give you similar Marvin numbers but he had his moments in Golden State.

@DS you said it man, anything is better than Marvin right now.
why do these Hawks (Joe, Marvin, Jamal) play like sissies? They are all have size, athleticism and strength but are afraid to make strong moves or take it strong to the hoop. Marvin is even longer in terms of overall length/standing reach than Josh or Al but he plays far smaller than his ’size’. There a lot of smaller guards who play ‘bigger’ than him.

Teague, even in limited glimpses, seemed to have a good knack for passing and ball movement. I imagine that on top of his coaches not giving him a chance, the Atlanta veteran culture of isolation, individualized play of Joe Johnson and J Crawford did not play well to Teague’s comfort level. He seemed to decide that he only had this moment to prove his worth, and I think he has shown the heart and skill to be a legit NBA starter. Now that he’s getting a chance, I think the Hawks players are buying into his ball movement too. As for his defense, Rose has still make him look bad a good bit, but that is probably true for all point guards, and especially considering Teague hasn’t played enough against a guy like that to be fully ready in the heat of the playoffs. I’m a big fan – Go Teague!

We traded two first round draft picks for a point guard we already had. Mike Bibby was killing us because he couldn’t play defense and couldn’t distribute. He was basically a spot up shooter playing the point position and Jeff Teague couldn’t get on the court in front of this guy. What the hell are these coaches looking at? Teague is playing great. As he gets more playing time and confidence he will be even greater. ATL is a stronger team with more scoring threats. Josh is a late bloomer but better late than never.
Of course there are a lot of high expectations but team chemistry makes the difference with playoff teams. I believe that he can become an All Star and pick up a lot of triple doubles if he stops focusing on averaging twenty points a game. His points will come if he hustles and stays combative around the rim. (Reference my Josh Smith/Mark Bradley blog comments) Imagine what this same team would have been like if the Hawks had never gotten rid of Jason Terry (Who they got nothing in return for) As we witnessed him lead the Mavericks (9 three pointers) in Sweeping the LA Fakers. You have to really wonder what were they thinking because he is still a great role player that carried Atlanta when they had literally no talent. Potato Couches and Monday Morning Douche Bags, quit showing your ignorance. Championship teams are not built by taking away key players from the talent pool The key is to add more talent without giving your stars away. If you want to get rid of someone, fire who ever keeps sleeping on the top free agents and who drafted Marvin when they could have gotten Chris Paul, or who drafted Sheldon Wlliams, A.C, Law and Salim Stoudimire.
Let us hope that Teague will be different and help us forget.

We NEED to keep Jamal next year. How many times this year and even in the playoffs has the offense fallen apart and Jamal has kept us in the game till everyone else decided to start hitting shots again. That said, he wants more money and we know our fabulous ownership group won’t give it to him. (What a shame, imagine if we could keep this group for a whole year with both Kirk AND our newfound point guard Teague. We might even challenge for a title.) But the reality is that isn’t going to happen. What this playoff has shown me is that (I know if kills me to say this about the second pick in the whole damn draft, ahead of both Chris Paul and Deron Williams) Marvin Williams is a BUST! He is little more than a backup small forward and not even a very good one at that. Somebody like that we can pick up for peanuts in the off season as a free agent. He hasn’t done crap all playoffs and really, have we missed him? NO!. So, next year we have 2 great shooting guards, Joe and Jamal (and Joe can even slide over to small forward against some teams) and 2 good to great point guards (Kirk and Teague). We just give Marvin away for nothing to anybody willing to take on his $6 million or so salary (what a joke) and use that money to help sign Jamal. We use Joe and JSmoove at small forward. We sign a cheap free agent backup small forward who can play good defense (we don’t need any defense from him). Now maybe we can challenge for a title.

Hawks in 7, here’s why?
1. LD will devise a D to neutralize Rose. I suggest a zone blitz.
2. Hawks mentally/physically/spiritually tougher after Magic series.
3. Individual matchups are pretty even overall.
4. JJ’s playing better, his domination of Korver/Brewer is key.
5. Teague contributes after watching Rocky I, II, III, IV.
6. Damian ain’t scared to throw ‘dem bows.
7. Smoove/Deng is a good matchup, younger legs prevail in 7.
8. Horford has Noah’s number.
9. Big lineup will neutralize Noah, Thomas, Boozer.
10. Watson scares me.

I agree that JT has done well given a chance, but he is still not the solution to the Hawks at PG. He is just another guard like JJ and JC who is good at getting his own shot. Just like those guys he does not create for others. Think how good JS and AH would be if we had Chris Paul, D. Williams or Ray Felton point guards we could have had instead of Marvin.

Regarding Teague, you’ve been one of his most ardent sponsors on the real Hawks blogs. I like the kid; ask Jeff Schultz about my “Wizard of Oz” photo shop one day… Still, we’ve got to get him to play some D and really set-up the offense instead of flip flopping with Joe (who handles and starts it more) in the half court… Just a thought on my part…

Regardless of whether the Hawks beat the Bulls–and I really hope they do, of course–what this series has shown me is that the Bulls are not the juggernaut that they were made out to be. At this point, I don’t see them touching the Heat (or the Celtics). The Hawks, on the other hand, could compete with both those teams.

Whoever suggested JT is doing this while guarded by D Rose, as if that says anything, hasn’t paid much attention to how the MVP plays defense!
JT is playing really well. I think it does get overstated, but I guess that’s understandable considering how long people have waited to see him get his chance. I personally would put him at solid and showing he can be a definite rotation player at worst going forward. The way the defense operates, I think he probably fits OK as PG – this system wouldn’t make great use of a traditional set-up point. Under the circumstances, he’s played better than the org had a right to expect – but objectively it’s still not more than solid (overall). He’s had some great moments.
Kirk does seem to be “cursed” with an awful lot of mentoring – but I think he wants to coach post-career, so it probably doesn’t hurt in the long run. I think he’d be a great coach.

Didn’t think so to begin with, but the fact is that Hinrich’s injury has been a boon to the Hawks.
Teague has emerged, and done so in fine fashion. You can “sample size” all you want, but playing well in the 2nd round of the playoffs in EACH GAME of the series is something a lot of veterans can’t lay claim to.
Teague is here. When’s the last time we had a point guard that can not only outrun everybody but the League’s MVP, but will also dunk the ball every chance he gets?
Oh, and how about that 3-to-1 turnover ratio…in the playoffs…against the League MVP?
Yeah. He’s a baller. No question. Teague haters are probably STILL in the closet right about now. Afraid to come out and get dunked on.

Teague is not intelligent enough to lead a team’s offense which is what a true point does. Teague is able to score because he is a no effect player. Chicago’s defensive resources are applied to JJ, JC and JSmoove. Teague and Horford cant beat you so they are not commanding any special scheming. I dont want to dismiss the Fact, that teague is fast(hes the youngest)quick,(hes the youngest) and error prone(hes the youngest.) Being quick and fast does not a point guard make. That is like having the right physical qualifications to Join the marines. It does not make you a marine. Whats in your heart head and soul does.
I cant account for Teagues soul or heart, but I can see that hes not the brightest bulb in the room. and doesnt appear to have what it takes to distribute the ball and run an offense.
Teague aint it.

Two quick points:
Point 1: I’m very pleased with the job Coach Drew has done as a first year NBA head coach. He gave opportunities to Jason Collins and Jeff Teague this season. During the season (apparently many of you have forgotten) when Teague was given an opportunity, he had flashes of solid play. However, as a young player, this is to be expected. As a new coach, Drew could not put his job on the line with this player until a more consistent pattern of play evidenced itself. As the season wore on, Drew gave Teague the playing time as it was warranted. I say Teague’s present stellar play is a direct result of the confidence placed in him this season by Coach Drew.
Point 2: We need to give Coach Drew credit for another (possibly the single most important) move that he made this year. By inserting Jason Collins in the starting lineup against certain teams (particularly the Magic), he completely changed the dynamics of the Hawks team. This move freed up the other players to take care of their positional business.

Does anybody remember that the Hawks were the ones to draft Pau Gasol only to trade him before he even played a second for us? I watched Jason Terry score 32 points last night on 9 for 10 shooting from 3 pt range for Dallas. I trust the Hawks will find away to trade away Teague this summer to get somebody that they can use for 2 years before they break down. Their player development is a joke in the Atl. ET-I think you’re right. The Hawks have a history of blow major trades and passing up on great talent. I hope the Hawks stayed up to watch the Memphis/Thunder game cause now they see how serious teams are when trying to survive. You literally have to be willing to give your life! Give all you got-and be smart-that’s all any coach would want. I still think the Hawks need to blow up their roster and start next season with younger players. If you look at the ages of some of the role players minus a couple of starters, then the Hawks are already past their prime. Josh may be around, but can be traded with value, because he’s only 25. Teague is young, J. Crawford is getting old. In the NBA, if you’re early to mid-thirties, then you’d better start looking toward the rebuilding future..We’ll take Bynum or Gasol, but not Odom. There are other teams that may have some nice pieces that we want.

The coaches had to realize how good he was. How could they not? Drew is not stupid. Maybe he did not feel the confidence in him coming from the staff or maybe was not confident himself. it had to be something that was missing. Something he was not showing in practices….Unless they just thought that a 2nd year guard was too young to run the team. It had to be something right? I mean there is no way he played like this in practice and still did not get decent minutes during the season? Maybe he just needed to know that he was needed and that this was his time and he needed the pressure. I dont know but it had to be something right? No way he played like this in practice and was still riding the pine. Had to be something….right?

NBA has gotten like college in respect of point guards. They are becoming more important than the center and you have to have one that can play defense and drive to the basket and see the kick out. Teague has made Josh Smith a better player because he brings the play to the paint instead of the perimeter. He is also still listening to the coach, he wants playing time and has sat on the bench. Not only is he fast but he can twist his body and double pump as well as anyone in the league. This kid is special as long as he plays humble.

For those that say Teague’s defense has been suspect this series, recognize that chicago’s entire offense is to set screens and picks for Derrick Rose to free him up. Teague’s been fighting through, over and under multiple picks almost every possession. If Rose torched anyone in any game, it was because the help defense wasn’t there or they didn’t switch quickly enough or come out far enough to allow Teague to get back to Rose. Teague’s defense has been solid, with few lapses.

Teague is AWESOME alreday. In this series with Chicago, Teague has OUTPLAYED Derrick Rose, and should be the Hawks starting point guard next year. If Teague doesnt start for now on, LARRY DREW SHOULD BE LINED UP IN FRONT OF A 15-GUN FIRING SQUAD and should be promptly fired. I dont mean a personnel move, i’m talking about bullets from a gun.

Yes, clearly larry is a genius for putting in the biggest guy we have to guard players more powerful than the satus quo. And his descision to wait until the later in the season to roll out his master plan was… oh, wait.
