OK Cam, while you're up at the dais, somebody has a proposition for you. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
(Originally published April 25, 2011, at 12:01 p.m.)
(UPDATE II at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 26: Received an email from the folk(s) at CamNewtonLieDetector.com, who claim this is a legitimate offer. They declined an interview with me but, according to the email, will be conducting two interviews this week with ESPN and Yahoo! Sports. Details below.)
Maybe you believe Cam Newton and think everybody should just leave him and Auburn alone.
Maybe you don’t believe Cam Newton and are convinced he and possibly Auburn got away with something last season.
But are you willing to put up $1 million to prove your suspicions? Well, somebody is – or at least claims to. There is now a website called CamNewtonLieDetector.com. The author of the website proposes, “An Open Challenge To Cam Newton.” Newton will be paid $1 million if he can pass the, “4 Questions College Football Fans Want Answered” (that’s a headline on the site).
Before going into more detail, it’s worth noting that I have attempted to contact the site through both the phone number and email address listed and have yet to hear back. I don’t really have an attorney so I couldn’t do that, “Have my guy call your guy thing.”
The phone number listed (302-284-6213) comes up as an unpublished number in Felton, Delaware, in a reverse white pages search. I’m not aware of an SEC fan base in Felton, Delaware, maybe there’s a secret pocket group of Alabama, Georgia or Florida fans there. (They’re everywhere!)
♦
UPDATE I: Somebody from the website returned an email to me. They sent the following note, but left it unsigned.
Jeff, we’ll be happy to do an interview but are in discussions with a
major national outlet for first interview. Our offer is real. We are guys
on the West Coast in our 40s who love college sports and are sickened by
the integrity issues permeating the system. We are in discussions to do a
similar concept with college basketball. Please contact the Cam camp as
the ball is in their court. We’ll be in touch after this first interview.
UPDATE II: Here’s today’s email, detailing the website’s planned interviews. The author also has a special message for Auburn fans.
Media Requests for camnewtonliedetector.com
info@camnewtonliedetector.com
Tuesday, April 26, 2011
Thank you for your interest, but we will only be doing two media requests: ESPN Radio Southern California (Thursday 8:40) and Yahoo Sports “Dr Saturday.”
If we proceed with a college basketball concept, we will let you know.
To the Auburn fans sending “energized” emails, I’ll personally never forget the atmosphere of your stadium that August day several years ago and the warmth and southern hospitality of the Auburn people. I’d like to keep that memory of Auburn foremost in my mind. The vastly unequal, unjust and highly political system permeating college athletics to the benefit of some programs and the detriment of others is our concern.
So what do you think?
♦
Meanwhile, here’s the challenge, directly from the website:
Attention Cam, pass a professionally administered lie detector test
by answering “No” to these 4 questions..and $1,000,000 is yours.1. Prior to signing with Auburn, were you aware your father was “shopping” you to Mississippi State or any other school?
2. Did you tell Dan or Meghan Mullen that you signed with Auburn because of the money because you truly believed Auburn had paid for your commitment?
3. Did anyone on the Auburn coaching staff/athletic department instruct you how to answer questions from the NCAA by lying or avoiding the truth?
4. Did you or your family ever receive any impermissible benefits from Auburn?
The TRUTH Matters
Cam, have your attorney contact our attorney to work out the mutually agreed upon details: Email:info@camnewtonliedetector.com. Call: 302-284-6213.
Is this legit? I dunno. Probably not. Besides, Newton may be the first pick in the NFL draft, so I really don’t think he needs the $1 million, even if he thought he could pass. Wouldn’t shock me though if ol’ Cecil “Huggy Bear” Newton tried to figure out some way to make a buck off this.

This is a golden opportunity for Newton, regardless if it’s legit or not and it has nothing to do with Cam or Cecil wanting the money.
First, Cam takes the challenge and pledges to pass the test and give the one million to a childrens hospital.
Taking the challenge and passing and then donating the money to charity would greatly improve cam’s image and it would go a long way in helping Auburn with it’s extremely tarnished image.
Legit or not, I don’t think Cam will take the challenge. What will their spin team come up with as an excuse? You can Bet ol Bobby Lowder is on the phone with his best NCAA lawyers to come up with the best excuse as to Cam not doing it.

Hey DMom, I gotta deal for you. If Carolina picks Cam first then I’ll keep my mouth shut about his sorry-a$$ past. The reason I’m up for that is that it’s my belief that Jerry Richardson, the Panthers’ owner, is way too ‘old school’ and way too much of a straight shooter to allow his ‘baby’ to be associated with the kind of punk that I believe Newton to be. Before Richardson will commit a be-jillion dollars to Cammy, he’ll have had his investigators – and friends in the NFL, FBI, et.al., scope this kid out and if there’s anything there, he’ll pass on the pick or trade it. So let’s just see.

You have to have the IQ of a Goldfish to even think Cam and Cecil Newton did not recieve any money, lie to everyone who asked, and lied about Cecil not telling Cam what he had done and was doing. The lies continued even when Cecil agreed not to attend any Auburn events and there he was on television hugging Cam at the BCS title game.
No one can believe anything Cecil, Cam, Chizik, Trooper, Luper, or Bobby Lowder ever says. The same has already been proven about Pat Dye.

You know, I really do not know if Cam Newton took money, and I really do not care. What I do care about is the fact that he and his father and their actions have tarnished the SEC even further than we were already percieved by the rest of the nation.
The actions of many people in the SEC have reflected poorly on the conference. From arrest, some multiple times, to not meeting grades and classroom requirement, to graduation rates. If we are ranking our conference on sending players to the NFL then we are at the top of the food chain. But these are student athletes, and when student athletes are one and done then we are setting ourselves up for failure at some point.
Graduate your player, make them go to class, forget about paying players, it is not going to happen. If you paid players then players would want to form a union and you would see the same things happen in college that are happening in the NFL. Most schools do not make money when you factor in the non revenue sports that must be paid for. Put a stop to the one and dones, the programs that allow others besides parents, grandparents, or guardians from being involved with recruitment of players.
We have seen collegiate football take some major steps back in the past 18 months, the agents, the selling of merchandise by players, the lying to officials, the pay for play allegations and coaches lying or covering up for players violating rules. The behavior of the NCAA, coaches, assistants, street agents, boosters and parents have set a bad tone for players looking to sign a major college scholarship. The whole system is rotten and some major penalities must be handed out to set the tone for the next 10 years.

If Auburn has nothing to hide they should find a wealthy booster who wants to match the money and cam can then donate the two million to a childrens charity. It would be great publicity but Auburn won’t allow it because they have many lies to keep secret.
Where are all the Auburn fans on that idea??? If I was so sure of his innocence I would be pushing that idea.

What has he to gain by taking the lie detector test. First off, it is inadmissable in a court of law, so what would make it any better if done privately. If he comes out on the short end of the stick, he gets no money and his supporters say, the test is not legal. If he were to pass it, the same would be said by those that believe he did it. He stands to make a lot more than a million dollars when he goes pro. So, If I were him, I wouldn’t do it. If it were that easy in the real world, the NCAA would have requested one you would think.

Personally I find it extremely difficult to believe he did not know what his dad was up to. His frame of mind after supposedly finding out certainly didn’t portray a person who felt like he had just been betrayed by his father. Most people would be depressed, upset, angry, if they realized their own father sold them out. But Cam? He sure was a happy go lucky type of dude for someone whose dad sold him like chattel. So that proves one of 2 things- 1- Either he knew all along and that’s why it doesn’t bother him or 2- He didn’t know but he has such low moral standards that this kind of behavior by his father doesn’t bother him whatsoever.

In a country with a judicial justice system you are innocent until proven guilty. No one has been able to prove Cam or Cecil guilty. It’s hard to trace a bag of money placed as an anonomyous donation outside your church doors. So long as Cam and family can keep their mouths shut they have no worries.

A million dollars is chump change to Cam Newton. He already got one million from his Under Armor contract and many millions more will be his later this week. Taking that test isn’t worth his time, not that those guys could get up a million if their lives depended on it.
He did nothing wrong and Auburn did nothing wrong. If you think otherwise, prove it! If you can’t prove it, keep on whining about how the big, bad, mean Aubies beat up on your po’ lil’ ol’ babies.

I have kids and I teach them to tell the truth, regardless of the consequence. The truth of the matter is, we have all lied at some point in time and no one lie is greater than another. Why is it that so many folks get self-righteous when the benefit of another’s lie is notoriety and money? On a side note, I’m sure there are pop-ups related to that website for which someone is using the popularity of Cam Newton to push some product. No way does the person sponsoring the website actually believe that the kid would actually take them up on the offer when he’s days away from being a top pick in the NFL draft.

I guess the first question is…who would want to play for MSU in the first place. They are a small market SEC team which a mix of Conference USA and Big East talent. They were just pissed cuz Cam jumped them for the plains….now what went on between Cecil and MSU is obviously true…whether Cam knew about it is up in the air…but at the end of the day…does it matter…it’s over with. The fact of the matter is this situation goes on in college sports around the country…so Cam is just the poster boy for it right now because he was hands down the BEST player in CF last year…now had Auburn sucked last year and had a medicore record, nobody would care one way or the other. USF had a bunch of players on their roster a few years ago that were pretty much academically ineligible at most major institutions across the country, and they were winning…it’s all about money and politics people. The NCAA isn’t a morally conscious group of individuals either. They have to slap a couple of fines and sanctions here and there just to keep tails out of the fire. Do you think they really, sincerely care about the Cam situation or Coach Tressel and the OSU gang? Hell no! Those schools generate millions of dollars…of which the NCAA gets a cut…

To the originator of this great plan, I say outstanding idea!!! This would finally shed some light on a lot of things but a few changes first:
Arrange for the following individuals to show up and submit themselves to the same polygraph test and I am sure Cam would do the same. A few individuals that need to be added to the lie detector plan!!!
Dan Mullen
John Bond
Kenny Rogers
Urban Meyer
Nick Saban
Julio Jones
Trent Richardson
Peaches Winston (Foster father of Brent Calloway)
And for all my Georgia friends, ask Rodney Garner a few questions about why Terry Bowden ran him out of Auburn a few years ago. Trust me, he wont answer and you wont like the answer!
Everyone wants the truth until it impacts them, but I am certain that if this list of individuals would agree to the same test, we could all learn the truth. The funny thing about shining a light in a dark, cold room, all the roaches start to scurry for the dark, just make sure its not your room or your roaches!
