Cam Newton ‘offered’ $1 million if he can pass lie detector (UPDATE II: They’ll do interviews)

OK Cam, while you're up at the dais, somebody has a proposition for you. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

(Originally published April 25, 2011, at 12:01 p.m.)

(UPDATE II at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 26: Received an email from the folk(s) at CamNewtonLieDetector.com, who claim this is a legitimate offer. They declined an interview with me but, according to the email, will be conducting two interviews this week with ESPN and Yahoo! Sports. Details below.)

Maybe you believe Cam Newton and think everybody should just leave him and Auburn alone.

Maybe you don’t believe Cam Newton and are convinced he and possibly Auburn got away with something last season.

But are you willing to put up $1 million to prove your suspicions? Well, somebody is – or at least claims to. There is now a website called CamNewtonLieDetector.com. The author of the website proposes, “An Open Challenge To Cam Newton.” Newton will be paid $1 million if he can pass the, “4 Questions College Football Fans Want Answered” (that’s a headline on the site).

Before going into more detail, it’s worth noting that I have attempted to contact the site through both the phone number and email address listed and have yet to hear back. I don’t really have an attorney so I couldn’t do that, “Have my guy call your guy thing.”

The phone number listed (302-284-6213) comes up as an unpublished number in Felton, Delaware, in a reverse white pages search. I’m not aware of an SEC fan base in Felton, Delaware, maybe there’s a secret pocket group of Alabama, Georgia or Florida fans there. (They’re everywhere!)

UPDATE I: Somebody from the website returned an email to me. They sent the following note, but left it unsigned.

Jeff, we’ll be happy to do an interview but are in discussions with a
major national outlet for first interview. Our offer is real. We are guys
on the West Coast in our 40s who love college sports and are sickened by
the integrity issues permeating the system. We are in discussions to do a
similar concept with college basketball. Please contact the Cam camp as
the ball is in their court. We’ll be in touch after this first interview.

UPDATE II: Here’s today’s email, detailing the website’s planned interviews. The author also has a special message for Auburn fans.

Media Requests for camnewtonliedetector.com

info@camnewtonliedetector.com

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Thank you for your interest, but we will only be doing two media requests: ESPN Radio Southern California (Thursday 8:40) and Yahoo Sports “Dr Saturday.”

If we proceed with a college basketball concept, we will let you know.

To the Auburn fans sending “energized” emails, I’ll personally never forget the atmosphere of your stadium that August day several years ago and the warmth and southern hospitality of the Auburn people. I’d like to keep that memory of Auburn foremost in my mind. The vastly unequal, unjust and highly political system permeating college athletics to the benefit of some programs and the detriment of others is our concern.

So what do you think?

Meanwhile, here’s the challenge, directly from the website:

Attention Cam, pass a professionally administered lie detector test
by answering “No” to these 4 questions..and $1,000,000 is yours.

1. Prior to signing with Auburn, were you aware your father was “shopping” you to Mississippi State or any other school?

2. Did you tell Dan or Meghan Mullen that you signed with Auburn because of the money because you truly believed Auburn had paid for your commitment?

3. Did anyone on the Auburn coaching staff/athletic department instruct you how to answer questions from the NCAA by lying or avoiding the truth?

4. Did you or your family ever receive any impermissible benefits from Auburn?

The TRUTH Matters

Cam, have your attorney contact our attorney to work out the mutually agreed upon details: Email:info@camnewtonliedetector.com. Call: 302-284-6213.

Is this legit? I dunno. Probably not. Besides, Newton may be the first pick in the NFL draft, so I really don’t think he needs the $1 million, even if he thought he could pass. Wouldn’t shock me though if ol’ Cecil “Huggy Bear” Newton tried to figure out some way to make a buck off this.

“Not one million dollar but a few hundred million.” I realize you were trying to be dramatic, but no one in American Sports History has made a “few hundred.” You can argue Jordan and or Tiger did/do but that is largely endorsement money. He’ll get what the market will bare, but that really has nothing to do with whether or not he knew his dad was pimping him out. I think it would be fitting if he played in a division with Fairley and got late hit 5 or 6 times a year.

Brian Jennings, I agree with you but not because Allbarn or Cam did nothing wrong. His dad violated and SEC Rule that expressly calls for his being dismissed from his sport. The SEC waived judgment and let the NCAA decide because they wanted two teams in the BCS. The NCAA gave a half a$$ed no suspension ruling because they wanted the best BCSC game possible. You do notice that the NCAA did not give the money back to the television station(s) they took it from when USC vacated their title, right? And if Allbarn ever does (which I doubt they will) the NCAA won’t have to give that money back either.

Man, everybody let’s just let it be. What we have here is the swindler’s trying to out swindle the swindler’s. Cam, Auburn, and the NCAA are all guilty. My final judgement on this case is The NCAA is the biggest swindler and if they couldn’t come up with ruling after looking into this then ah they must have been payoff to keep quiet……….LOL, Cam, Auburn, and the NCAA all got what they wanted, money for play, a championship, and a hellified payday from rating and revenue for the bowls and T.V monies.

So, people who “anonymously” setup a website offering money to someone to take a “lie detector” test, who will not even given their names, the name of their lawyer, etc., are talking about “integrity”.

I don’t know if anybody in these 300-plus posts has mentioned the recent news that ‘the’ trial over in Alabama, where Uncle Milty McGregor is being charged with bribery and a bunch of other crap, has one of his fellow defendants agreeing to ‘testify’ against Milty. Don’t know what this could mean for that the trial, set for the first week in June, but I suspect that it could get us closer to finding out if the wire-tap evidence that’s supposed to be used in that trial, and that also includes proof of Milty’s participation in the Auburn pay/play mess. The reason, Mr. Jennings, that the NCAA has yet to produce ‘evidence’ on this is that they have to wait for the political bribery trial to run it’s course.

Of course if Uncle Milty ‘pleads out’ in return for the wire-taps to be burned under those dying oak trees, we may never know for sure.

Jeff, it would appear that you’re reading this so I’ve got a question that perhaps you could contribute to. To me the bigger issue about the Cam Newton thing…and the Mettenberger kid from Oconee County…and probably the kids from the Columbus High School that, supposedly, stole from player lockers…is that what you have are student-athletes that were, or will be, kicked out of or banned from SEC institutions, but for how long? In the case of Newton and Mettenberger all they had to do is go play, and I assume go to some classes, at a JC then they were welcomed back into ‘big-time’ SEC football by other Conference institutions as if nothing happened. In Cam’s case he won the Heisman and the NC…Mettenberger is gonna probably be starting at QB at LSU sometime in the near future…and the kids from Columbus, who knows – except they won’t be at Georgia.

My point is what’s the point in disciplining these kids if all they have to do is go ‘hang-out’ and play a little football for a year, or less? I say the SEC should institute a rule that anybody dismissed from a member institution for cause cannot be admitted to any other member institution for, at least, two seasons – and I mean admitted, not just not allowed to play…and if they could get the NCAA to go along and ban them from participating at all, then maybe we could expect a little better behavior…now if they can get the NFL to throw in on the deal, we might really have something.

@Dirty Dawg, Cam was in “good standing”, both as a student and athlete with Florida when he transferred to Blinn.

Before Newton could enroll at Blinn, however, Franchione and school officials conducted their own inquiry into the situation at Florida.

“We have a (National Junior College Athletic Association) policy that you can’t take a student-athlete that is not eligible to go back to the institution he was at,” Rehr said. “So, upon him leaving Florida, he was still in good standing as a student, and he was still in good standing with the (football) program.

“We were assured by people in the admissions office and the coaching staff at Florida that he was in good standing”

No Dunwoody Mom I hadn’t heard that there was nothing on those wire-taps about Auburn….what I had heard/read was that nothing from the wire-taps would be made public until it was determined if they were going to be used in the June trial…if anything else has been released about it – other than AU fans/attorneys/PR people say so – then it has yet to be reported in any paper that has it’s information available to a Google search. All I’ve ever gotten from my AU friends is that ‘all we know is that he was eligible at the time he was played and they they had no indication that he should be withheld from participation’.

So I’d like to know just who associated with the FBI and/or the Alabama political bribery case has come forward and claimed that there’s ‘nothing to see (or hear) here’.

The only reason I can think of that a lying, cheating, stealing, law-breaker like Cam Newton could have remained ‘in good standing’ by the University of Florida at the time they dismissed him, is that they had either been castrated by threats of lawsuits that could have revealed information they didn’t want to have revealed, or they simply lost their nerve. Either way, the kid’s behavior was reprehensible and needed to be more severely punished for that behavior than he was…and the same thing for the Mettenberger kid and the punks that were stupid enough to steal on a recruiting trip…geesh!

…and the reason, I assume, that he couldn’t have gone back to his previous institution is that it was behind the ‘at’.

@JB – JB the players time is controlled by the coaching staff. There are some that come out with Engineering, Computer Science and other Degrees, but a lot of that depends on the program and the coaching staff. So many get used up and pushed aside, just look what happened to Cam Newton at Florida. He was being used as a tackling dummy, but he knew to leave. In the end, anything short of paying the players is not fair.

There is a reason why lie detector tests are inadmissible in a court of law. They are notoriously unreliable. The website and its premise reeks of desperation. Every accusation to date has failed to get the desired result, so they have now resorted to the “if you have nothing to hide” tactic.

Newton has nothing to gain by the offer. If he takes the test and passes, people will just call him a natural born liar (see post above). Better to simply ignore them move on with his life.
