Cam Newton ‘offered’ $1 million if he can pass lie detector (UPDATE II: They’ll do interviews)

OK Cam, while you're up at the dais, somebody has a proposition for you. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

OK Cam, while you're up at the dais, somebody has a proposition for you. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

(Originally published April 25, 2011, at 12:01 p.m.)

(UPDATE II at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 26: Received an email from the folk(s) at CamNewtonLieDetector.com, who claim this is a legitimate offer. They declined an interview with me but, according to the email, will be conducting two interviews this week with ESPN and Yahoo! Sports. Details below.)

Maybe you believe Cam Newton and think everybody should just leave him and Auburn alone.

Maybe you don’t believe Cam Newton and are convinced he and possibly Auburn got away with something last season.

But are you willing to put up $1 million to prove your suspicions? Well, somebody is – or at least claims to. There is now a website called CamNewtonLieDetector.com. The author of the website proposes, “An Open Challenge To Cam Newton.” Newton will be paid $1 million if he can pass the, “4 Questions College Football Fans Want Answered” (that’s a headline on the site).

Before going into more detail, it’s worth noting that I have attempted to contact the site through both the phone number and email address listed and have yet to hear back. I don’t really have an attorney so I couldn’t do that, “Have my guy call your guy thing.”

The phone number listed (302-284-6213) comes up as an unpublished number in Felton, Delaware, in a reverse white pages search. I’m not aware of an SEC fan base in Felton, Delaware, maybe there’s a secret pocket group of Alabama, Georgia or Florida fans there. (They’re everywhere!)

UPDATE I: Somebody from the website returned an email to me. They sent the following note, but left it unsigned.

Jeff, we’ll be happy to do an interview but are in discussions with a
major national outlet for first interview. Our offer is real. We are guys
on the West Coast in our 40s who love college sports and are sickened by
the integrity issues permeating the system. We are in discussions to do a
similar concept with college basketball. Please contact the Cam camp as
the ball is in their court. We’ll be in touch after this first interview.

UPDATE II: Here’s today’s email, detailing the website’s planned interviews. The author also has a special message for Auburn fans.

Media Requests for camnewtonliedetector.com

info@camnewtonliedetector.com

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

Thank you for your interest, but we will only be doing two media requests: ESPN Radio Southern California (Thursday 8:40) and Yahoo Sports “Dr Saturday.”

If we proceed with a college basketball concept, we will let you know.

To the Auburn fans sending “energized” emails, I’ll personally never forget the atmosphere of your stadium that August day several years ago and the warmth and southern hospitality of the Auburn people. I’d like to keep that memory of Auburn foremost in my mind. The vastly unequal, unjust and highly political system permeating college athletics to the benefit of some programs and the detriment of others is our concern.

So what do you think?

Meanwhile, here’s the challenge, directly from the website:

Attention Cam, pass a professionally administered lie detector test
by answering “No” to these 4 questions..and $1,000,000 is yours.

1. Prior to signing with Auburn, were you aware your father was “shopping” you to Mississippi State or any other school?

2. Did you tell Dan or Meghan Mullen that you signed with Auburn because of the money because you truly believed Auburn had paid for your commitment?

3. Did anyone on the Auburn coaching staff/athletic department instruct you how to answer questions from the NCAA by lying or avoiding the truth?

4. Did you or your family ever receive any impermissible benefits from Auburn?

The TRUTH Matters

Cam, have your attorney contact our attorney to work out the mutually agreed upon details: Email:info@camnewtonliedetector.com. Call: 302-284-6213.

Is this legit? I dunno. Probably not. Besides, Newton may be the first pick in the NFL draft, so I really don’t think he needs the $1 million, even if he thought he could pass. Wouldn’t shock me though if ol’ Cecil “Huggy Bear” Newton tried to figure out some way to make a buck off this.

“Ryan Mallett being a drug addict (if that were true) was not rewarded with honors and trophies. Arkansas did not benefit from his drug use, nor temp him with drugs.”

That’s irrelevant to my point. The point is that there is a website dedicated to finding out the “truth” about Cam Newton getting paid market value for his labor — which, regardless of how much NCAA Kool-Aid you want to drink, is all Cam Newton did. In what alternate universe does that reflect more poorly on your university or make you a worse draft prospect than being a drug addict?

Auburn the most corrupt football program in America. First the Cam Newton deal, then the paying players out of illegal casinos, then the 4 players that admitted that auburn was and is paying player…where does it stop?
The only response from auburn fans is that Alabama is out to get us, AJC is biased, Cam (only 6 credited hours at au) is innocent because no proof, HBO is out to get us, NY times is targeting au, etc,…When do they ever say “hey we should take a hard look at our program since it makes the school(which is a good one)look like a laughing stock?

What I find hilarious about this whole thing is that the alleged laptop incident gets about 1/10th the attention that this pay for play “scandal” receives, evem though the laptop thing would be, you know, an actual CRIME. Some of your priorities are so messed up it’s unbelievable.

Beast, yeah never thought of Penn State but that would be another good program for Urban. The problem with the Tressel thing is that OSU isn’t under any institutional penalties because Tressel withheld the information from his superiors (hey they loved that part about it). Nice classy move on his part but a hammer is heading his way from the NCAA (they were NOT happy about it). He made the NCAA look like fools after actually lying to their face regarding the Sugar Bowl. The NCAA cannot have coaches blantantly lying about this type of stuff.

Joey if the police have the evidence they don’t need her permission to charge him. And if she publicly accused a man of rape then shouldn’t she have to defend her claim. Ben will pay for that accusation the rest of his life whether he did it or not. And if he did do it he needs to be in jail and not the NFL.

WDE in rape cases, yes the DA does need the victim to testify. Without her testimony there is no case! This is something that is very hard for woman, and they are grilled by Defense lawyers, law enforcement and the press as if, regardless of how they may dress or act, their behavior does not warrant another person to abuse them.

Got news for all you “let it go” folk: it will never die. Never. If the NCAA never publishes any conclusions on the matter, it will never die. If the NCAA publishes findings, in favor of Cam or otherwise, it will never die. You need to accept this.

BamaBean….WOW, do you have some issues! It is not that serious, FBI…really, the FBI come on! There are thousands of NCAA athletes that receive payouts, and many of them without the student asking for it. If anyone is to be jailed it should be those that give the hand shake! To be jailed over this, come on really, really and what purpose would that serve? Zero! The FBI needs to focus on more serious issue like US citizens involved in terrorism, i.e. the KKK!

UGA, not Auburn, is the school that should get the death penalty? Their crimes go all the way back to Vince Dooley.

Not to mention the hundreds of UGA athletes who never got past remedial studies, which is nothing more than elementary school reading, writing, and arithmetic.
