OK Cam, while you're up at the dais, somebody has a proposition for you. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
(Originally published April 25, 2011, at 12:01 p.m.)
(UPDATE II at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 26: Received an email from the folk(s) at CamNewtonLieDetector.com, who claim this is a legitimate offer. They declined an interview with me but, according to the email, will be conducting two interviews this week with ESPN and Yahoo! Sports. Details below.)
Maybe you believe Cam Newton and think everybody should just leave him and Auburn alone.
Maybe you don’t believe Cam Newton and are convinced he and possibly Auburn got away with something last season.
But are you willing to put up $1 million to prove your suspicions? Well, somebody is – or at least claims to. There is now a website called CamNewtonLieDetector.com. The author of the website proposes, “An Open Challenge To Cam Newton.” Newton will be paid $1 million if he can pass the, “4 Questions College Football Fans Want Answered” (that’s a headline on the site).
Before going into more detail, it’s worth noting that I have attempted to contact the site through both the phone number and email address listed and have yet to hear back. I don’t really have an attorney so I couldn’t do that, “Have my guy call your guy thing.”
The phone number listed (302-284-6213) comes up as an unpublished number in Felton, Delaware, in a reverse white pages search. I’m not aware of an SEC fan base in Felton, Delaware, maybe there’s a secret pocket group of Alabama, Georgia or Florida fans there. (They’re everywhere!)
♦
UPDATE I: Somebody from the website returned an email to me. They sent the following note, but left it unsigned.
Jeff, we’ll be happy to do an interview but are in discussions with a
major national outlet for first interview. Our offer is real. We are guys
on the West Coast in our 40s who love college sports and are sickened by
the integrity issues permeating the system. We are in discussions to do a
similar concept with college basketball. Please contact the Cam camp as
the ball is in their court. We’ll be in touch after this first interview.
UPDATE II: Here’s today’s email, detailing the website’s planned interviews. The author also has a special message for Auburn fans.
Media Requests for camnewtonliedetector.com
info@camnewtonliedetector.com
Tuesday, April 26, 2011
Thank you for your interest, but we will only be doing two media requests: ESPN Radio Southern California (Thursday 8:40) and Yahoo Sports “Dr Saturday.”
If we proceed with a college basketball concept, we will let you know.
To the Auburn fans sending “energized” emails, I’ll personally never forget the atmosphere of your stadium that August day several years ago and the warmth and southern hospitality of the Auburn people. I’d like to keep that memory of Auburn foremost in my mind. The vastly unequal, unjust and highly political system permeating college athletics to the benefit of some programs and the detriment of others is our concern.
So what do you think?
♦
Meanwhile, here’s the challenge, directly from the website:
Attention Cam, pass a professionally administered lie detector test
by answering “No” to these 4 questions..and $1,000,000 is yours.1. Prior to signing with Auburn, were you aware your father was “shopping” you to Mississippi State or any other school?
2. Did you tell Dan or Meghan Mullen that you signed with Auburn because of the money because you truly believed Auburn had paid for your commitment?
3. Did anyone on the Auburn coaching staff/athletic department instruct you how to answer questions from the NCAA by lying or avoiding the truth?
4. Did you or your family ever receive any impermissible benefits from Auburn?
The TRUTH Matters
Cam, have your attorney contact our attorney to work out the mutually agreed upon details: Email:info@camnewtonliedetector.com. Call: 302-284-6213.
Is this legit? I dunno. Probably not. Besides, Newton may be the first pick in the NFL draft, so I really don’t think he needs the $1 million, even if he thought he could pass. Wouldn’t shock me though if ol’ Cecil “Huggy Bear” Newton tried to figure out some way to make a buck off this.

TMZ, The answer is no….even if they were found convicted of everything…they cannot receive the dealth penalty…there are stipulations that has to happen and they don’t fall in any bracket..plus NCAA doesn’t want to do that to a school anymore…

The AJC is full of racism….where is the TRUTH about Big Ben we all know he raped that young girl….Why don’t you report more on that. Rape is a far greater crime than any alleged payout the Newton’s may have received. Or how about the buzz about the doping of several current ATL Falcon players including Mr. Ryan? These are questions we want answered…Mr. Schultz let your reporting be 360, you desire to drag names threw the dirt be fair. You are so predictable!

Dunwoody Mom I think a lot of the venom tossed in Cam’s direction has little to do with him or if he knew what his Daddy was trying to do…what I and a lot of folks I think is just so strange that Daddy admitted he tried to shop Cam, the SEC has a rule that if a representative for a player even tried to do that the player is NOT eligible to play…however some how the NCAA came in and ruled he could play and I guess that trumped the SEC rule?? Never got that part figured out..I think Cam is one of the top 5 college players I’ve ever seen, and I wish him good luck in the NFL…unless he is found out to have cheated and it costs Auburn..the idea that Reggie Bush cheated and USC is paying for his cheating and he walks away with not penalties is a complete mockery.

So any anonymous person can put up a web page and if Cam doesn’t jump through the hoops on cue, we’re all to assume he’s lying and Auburn is dirty? I see. And it gets the front page of the AJC with apparent glee. If it’s legit, I hope Cam takes them up on it, passes and gives $1 mil cash to Cecil.

If Cam can honestly answer those questions, he should jump all over this offer, no matter what his signing bonus will be. He can’t lose, right? He should take the fool’s money, if for no other reason, but to make a F/U point, then laugh all the way to the bank.

We have not heard anything more about the Big Ben case from the AJC, a great report would be getting in touch with that young college student and her family to figure out just what happened and why she refused to cooperate. Or why does the NFL want to include HGH in its drug testing and are the rumors that many of the players are using it including several of the Falcon players with word that Ryan is one of them. That in my opinion is getting to some truths that fans would LOVE to know!

OSU already knew every bit of that info and they decided to suspend him for a couple of games. Then tressel decided he would suspend himself for 5 games along with his players. The president already said they wouldn’t fire Tressel. Heck, he said he hoped Tressel didn’t fire him.

I am going to predict that Cam turns down the $1 million since he is about to get $20 million. Simple math. Bigger number wins.
I am also going to predict that the SEC run of national titles ends in 2011.
Bama does not have a QB
Neither does LSU
Arkansas will win the west but will lose twice.
East offers no national title contender.
I also predict that 2011 becomes the year of the good guy in college football. People like Jimbo fisher, Brady Hoke, Mark Richt, Bob Stoops and Mack Brown will have tremendous years and will win the right way.
We need this to wash the Newton/Tressel/chizik/Pryor taste out of our mouths from 2010.

@ Najeh Davenpoop…..WOW! Great point and yes Warren Moon is correct. I believe that Cam is the best QB if not the best player period in the upcoming draft. Regardless of what happened, the fact that the kids shows that he can both perform and lead under a lot of pressure is huge. That is what makes most QB’s flake out, they can’t handle the pressure. Sports writers tried to find flaws in the kids game, but it is simple if he was a flawed as they want to portray he would have lead Auburn to the NC. Auburn did what they did because of Cam, place any other QB there and they don’t win it all! No matter if it was Mallett or Taylor those kids could not get it done, period!

As far as any investigations are concerned, just because Newton was cleared to play and get his trophy does not mean that the NCAA is done with this matter. Nor does the NCAA provide updates to the public on who or what they are investigating.

Better lsiten-up all you Auburn & SEC fans.
Better be preparing yourselves for the DOOMSDAY that’s coming.
Right now, the NCAA is preparing to throw the Big10’s “SIGNATURE” school,
Ohio State, and Head Coach Jim Tressel under the NCAA bus for “violations.”
WHY? Were the violatins really that bad?
Why is the NCAA so aggressively pursuing what seems like a (relatively speaking) trivial matter?
The answer to that questions should scare the hell out of Auburn & SEC,
Heres’ why.
The NCAA is going to make a “public spectacle” out of investigating and penalizing Ohio State to show PROOF that they are being objective, even-handed and non-discriminatory towards ANY team,
including Ohio State.
So, why would the NCAA need to go thru the “public exercise”
of throwing Ohio State under the bus?
Here’s when DOOMSDAY arrives on The Plains.
When the NCAA is done publicly blasting Ohio State to hell,
the NCAA is going to turn its sights on Auburn.
MARK IT DOWN: Auburn is going to receive the full wrath of the NCAA.
And when the NCAA blasts Auburn into football abyss, NOBODY will be able to
say that the NCAA singled-out Auburn or another SEC school based on ANY bias.
Very soon, the NCAA is going to aggressively re-assert their control of college FOOTBALL athletics by implementing a brand new model/process of compliance, including how the NCAA will henceforth apply penalties to violations.
The most significant new rule will be the assessment and enforcement
of FINANCIAL PENALTIES for violations. No longer will the NCAA just settle for limits on scholarships, recruiting trips, and phone calls, etc.
With the application of FINANCIAL PENALTIES, universities will now have the responsibility to agrressively patrol for and PREVENT violations, or receive severe financial penalties directly to the university. No uiversity President is going to allow their Athletic Department to go out-of-control when there are serious financial risks at stake.
Auburn and the SEC got paid over $17 Million for playing in the BCS Title Game.
Look for the NCAA to make Auburn & SEC to pay a lot of that back to the NCAA.
Pay it back, or get an SMU-style “Death Penalty.” Neither Auburn nor SEC Commish
Mike Slive will have any choice but to pay it.
Folks, this isnt specualtion. The NCAA has already stated this is the direction they’re going.
The NCAA has made it clear they are STILL investigating Auburn and Cam Newton.
The NCAA is going to drop the hammer on Ohio State.
Then, the NCAA is going to drop an aircraft carrier on Auburn.
The penalties imposed on Auburn will be the next closest
thing to SMU’s infamous Death Penalty.
The NCAA is going to make a lasting example out of Auburn. Guaranteed.
And, there will be severe “collateral damage” to the SEC.
The ONLY question that remains is: When will the NCAA blast Auburn?
Before September 1st. Guaranteed.

gdawginkalamazoo,
The NCAA won’t force OSU to fire Tressel and they certainly won’t do it on their own. If they would’ve fired him, he’d be gone already. They would look like even bigger fools to do it now when they knew all of this info months ago. As far as Urban goes, it really doesn’t matter where he coaches. That’s his decision. Whoever hires him needs to be prepared for it to be a short run. When he truly puts forth the effort he’s one of the best, but it seems to take it’s toll on him physically. He’s not ever going to be like Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden. Speaking of Paterno, that would be a great place for him to go when he retires.
