OK Cam, while you're up at the dais, somebody has a proposition for you. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
(Originally published April 25, 2011, at 12:01 p.m.)
(UPDATE II at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 26: Received an email from the folk(s) at CamNewtonLieDetector.com, who claim this is a legitimate offer. They declined an interview with me but, according to the email, will be conducting two interviews this week with ESPN and Yahoo! Sports. Details below.)
Maybe you believe Cam Newton and think everybody should just leave him and Auburn alone.
Maybe you don’t believe Cam Newton and are convinced he and possibly Auburn got away with something last season.
But are you willing to put up $1 million to prove your suspicions? Well, somebody is – or at least claims to. There is now a website called CamNewtonLieDetector.com. The author of the website proposes, “An Open Challenge To Cam Newton.” Newton will be paid $1 million if he can pass the, “4 Questions College Football Fans Want Answered” (that’s a headline on the site).
Before going into more detail, it’s worth noting that I have attempted to contact the site through both the phone number and email address listed and have yet to hear back. I don’t really have an attorney so I couldn’t do that, “Have my guy call your guy thing.”
The phone number listed (302-284-6213) comes up as an unpublished number in Felton, Delaware, in a reverse white pages search. I’m not aware of an SEC fan base in Felton, Delaware, maybe there’s a secret pocket group of Alabama, Georgia or Florida fans there. (They’re everywhere!)
♦
UPDATE I: Somebody from the website returned an email to me. They sent the following note, but left it unsigned.
Jeff, we’ll be happy to do an interview but are in discussions with a
major national outlet for first interview. Our offer is real. We are guys
on the West Coast in our 40s who love college sports and are sickened by
the integrity issues permeating the system. We are in discussions to do a
similar concept with college basketball. Please contact the Cam camp as
the ball is in their court. We’ll be in touch after this first interview.
UPDATE II: Here’s today’s email, detailing the website’s planned interviews. The author also has a special message for Auburn fans.
Media Requests for camnewtonliedetector.com
info@camnewtonliedetector.com
Tuesday, April 26, 2011
Thank you for your interest, but we will only be doing two media requests: ESPN Radio Southern California (Thursday 8:40) and Yahoo Sports “Dr Saturday.”
If we proceed with a college basketball concept, we will let you know.
To the Auburn fans sending “energized” emails, I’ll personally never forget the atmosphere of your stadium that August day several years ago and the warmth and southern hospitality of the Auburn people. I’d like to keep that memory of Auburn foremost in my mind. The vastly unequal, unjust and highly political system permeating college athletics to the benefit of some programs and the detriment of others is our concern.
So what do you think?
♦
Meanwhile, here’s the challenge, directly from the website:
Attention Cam, pass a professionally administered lie detector test
by answering “No” to these 4 questions..and $1,000,000 is yours.1. Prior to signing with Auburn, were you aware your father was “shopping” you to Mississippi State or any other school?
2. Did you tell Dan or Meghan Mullen that you signed with Auburn because of the money because you truly believed Auburn had paid for your commitment?
3. Did anyone on the Auburn coaching staff/athletic department instruct you how to answer questions from the NCAA by lying or avoiding the truth?
4. Did you or your family ever receive any impermissible benefits from Auburn?
The TRUTH Matters
Cam, have your attorney contact our attorney to work out the mutually agreed upon details: Email:info@camnewtonliedetector.com. Call: 302-284-6213.
Is this legit? I dunno. Probably not. Besides, Newton may be the first pick in the NFL draft, so I really don’t think he needs the $1 million, even if he thought he could pass. Wouldn’t shock me though if ol’ Cecil “Huggy Bear” Newton tried to figure out some way to make a buck off this.

Dave in Marietta – HA! You’re delusional.
Name one major college football team that acted in total “honor” this year – no violations of any kind.
It can’t be done. They ALL cheat to some degree (some even unknowingly). So get off your high horse.

Most of the negative vibe on here comes from Dawg fans who cannot for the life of them comprehend or acknowledge that UGA’s program has slipped into the middle of the pack. Their remedy is to take it out on Auburn or Alabama or South Carolina and others. I have been involved in SEC football since the early 60’s and anyone with any credible awareness knows that The University of Georgia base (both alumni and fans) are the biggest winners and the poorest losers in the conference. No other institution comes close. Example: It took about 48 hours after the poor showing against UCF for the base to start beating the drums of “a new attitude” or “dream team” or whatever else makes them feel good. The “feelgood” stuff handed out by the base is always the same…………….beat their drum and dump on everybody else. Well, it writes well on blogs but will not win the SEC.

I would be very interested to know how much money is made on high school athletes from people with no ties to them? Would be interesting to know the vast amounts recruiting services, AAU tournament directors and coaches and all make. How many people would allow others to make money on their kids without collecting a cent? Hypocracy.

The NCAA is a mess. They rule based on Status. Ohio St. Guys allowed to play in Bowl and AJ sits 4 games. Auburn may be innocent. But the “money was to good at Auburn “is the statement all need to know was true or not.

Auburn is getting the death penalty. FBI is still on the case and all the facts will eventually come forward. Auburn and Cecil did one heck of a job hiding their paper trail. It obvisouly wasn’t thier first time. Sucks for AU that the one year you win the NC, its tainted.

I’m aware of what tabloid journalism is. I went to school, you know. This doesn’t qualify. … As for getting hits — well, yeah, my job is to write about things that interest readers. Cam Newton/Auburn=interest=hits (your word). So guilty as charged. Just because you may vehemently disagree with something doesn’t mean something qualifies as tabloid/yellow/”sensationalist” journalism.

Why not leave the man alone and hope he makes a success of the opportunities given to him? He certainly made a success of a small school in Texas that had never won anything and helped to carry Auburn to a national championship. Whoever is doing this garbage is probably a sore loser from a school that didn’t get a winning QB. Cam Newton doesn’t deserve this crap and neither do we….let’s stop trying to bring him down in the press.

There would be no reason for Cam to agree to this. He doesn’t need the money, and even if he passes it really wouldn’t change the minds of those who hate Auburn. They would probably accuse him of paying off the person giving the lie detector test. It’s kinda funny though.

Here’s the answer:
It’s time for a Winner Take All, Cam vs. Herschel, PAY-PER-VIEW, the Truth-Shall-Set-You-Free MMA (Make Me Accountable) event!
Herschel will be given similar questions such as: Did your momma really get a new house when you signed with UGA? … or … Did your Momma & Daddy get $50,000 cash (that was a lot back then) when you committed to UGA?
Actually, it doesn’t need to be a winner take all, there will be enough $$$ to go around and they may want to contribute a portion or all of their take to their favorite charity (or Athletic Dept).

University of Alabama football program made around $150 Million Profit over 3 years. The Players got none of that. I played college football and got the crap beat out of my body, some of my team mates had it worse. They had bad knees, headaches, broken legs and more, and they wer not paid a penny. For anyone who thinks that a young man should put his life/health on the line so that a University and Coaches can make Millions and the player gets nothing, unless he makes it to the NFL, then you should go play instead of watching for a few years. If Cam Newton secretly was given $2 Million while at Auburn, he earned every penny of it.
