Chipper Jones (with coach Larry Parrish) before today's game.
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. — Good morning from camp sunshine, where the Braves play their second game of the spring after Saturday’s 5-5 tie with the New York Mets (and no, they didn’t go to a shootout). Here’s today’s plan:
♦ I’ll be posting a column later on Chipper Jones, who will play his first game (albeit unofficial) since suffering a torn ACL in his left knee Aug. 10. Jones will be the designated hitter and bat third today. I spoke to him this morning and he had some terrific and pointed comments about his comeback from surgery, particularly when I asked him about the fans — and you know who you are — who believe he is only doing this for the money. One thing I’ve always appreciated about Jones is his candor, and this morning’s interview was no exception.
♦ Catcher David Ross is sporting the short-pants, high socks look in batting practice as a tribute to Jones, though he doesn’t know if he’ll do it in the game.
♦ Second baseman Dan Uggla will make his Braves debut and bat cleanup. The lineup: Martin Prado (7), Jordan Schafer (8), Jones (DH), Uggla (4), Freddie Freeman (3) — he’s coming off a three-double game Saturday — Alex Gonzalez (6), Ross (2), Joe Mather (9), Shawn Bowman (5). Today’s Braves’ pitchers: Rodrigo Lopez, Mike Minor, Brandon Beachy, Peter Moylan, Scott Proctor, Jairo Asencio.
♦ Schafer’s name actually was misspelled as “Shafer” on the board in the clubhouse. I assume the organization was not trying to send him a subliminal message.

Tossed from a spring game?
♦ Among those in attendance: retired manager Bobby Cox, who says he will be sitting with his wife, Pam, watching a game “for the first time since we’re married.”
Some funny stuff from Cox. He didn’t attend the Braves’ spring opener in Port St. Lucie Saturday, But he went to the shopping mall with his wife and made frequent trips out to the parking lot to listen to the game on satellite radio. Clearly, this isn’t an easy transition.
As you know, Cox won the Golden Thumb award in his career with 159 ejections. This morning, he admitted he also was once thrown out of a spring training game.
“The first game in my first spring with Toronto [in 1982],” he said.
The umpire?
“Durwood Merrill.
The play?
“It was a play a second base. We were stealing and he called him out. Obviously he was safe. … I went out there and he said, ‘Cox, I’ll eat you alive.’”
Sorry. I just can’t get enough of these old stories.
That’s it for now. Check back later for the column on Chipper. Any body want to make any predictions on his return today?

We would not even be having this “all about money” conversation if the Braves organization had been smart enough to realize Chipper’s age when they gave Chipper the contract. IMO, it’s not about Chipper accepting this gift, it’s about the Braves giving it to him in the first place. It should have contained more in incentives and less in salary. FWIW, I think Chipper will do everything he can to earn his salary.

A lot of this Chipper contract is payback for the less money he took when he was a perennial MVP candidate. Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux were not free. Is he worth this contract, absolutely not in terms of what he is capable of doing today. But it’s payback for the years he took less money to help keep the Braves intact. If it was pure market economics, Chipper would have left the Braves years ago.

Maybe I am behind a bit and this has been discussed, but if Bobby was kicked out of 159 games, that is roughly equal to getting kicked out of an entire season. We are going to miss Him!

There is no more useless unproductive and perhaps counterproductive thing that any player, coach, or manager can do during a baseball game than to argue with the umpires.
Managers don’t argue because they are trying to get the call overturned. They know that isn’t going to happen. They argue to keep the player in the game, to show the player (and the team) he supports his players and they aren’t really arguing for this call, they’re arguing for the next close call.

Actually, Cox had 158 regular season ejections (for the all-time record) and 3 postseason ejections. I like saying 161 total ejections and that’s the number we hard-core Braves Fans are sticking with… 161!!!

Chipper, you are a HOF player, no doubt. Because of miles from Atlanta – finances, etc., I will never get to see you play in person. I never miss watching you and all the Bravo’s play on tv. I have never questioned any player with your contracts playing for money. We as fans have our opinions about our Team and Players. My opinion – is that you are not the power hitter that you use to be. You can swing for the fences – hit 15 to 20 homers – 70 RBI’s and hit 265. You are still a great hitter, who can hit to all fields – cut some power swings, hit 330 and the other numbers can be the same. I have seen you hitting at your best – ball outside, slap it to the opposite field, inside, pull it or hit it straight away. Not many hitters have your talent. I wish you all the LUCK this year and next. (I think you can play next year if you want.)

Anybody who says Chipper should not be on the Roster, does not understand about player/management loyalty, who gave up part of his salary so the team could aquire stars a couple years ago. So he paid his dues, and if he stays healthy, will be an asset. As for Schafer, he does not belong on a major league team just yet…he has not paid his dues and there are a million options better than him.
