Petrino tries to solicit recruits with billboard — in Yuma, Ariz.

Arkansas football billboard (blurry image via ArkansasSports360.com).

Arkansas billboard is 1,406 miles from campus (image via ArkansasSports360).

Last week we learned to what extent Georgia coach Mark Richt went to land Isaiah Crowell in recruiting (lining up other players in a formation, leaving vacant the running back position for Crowell’s on-campus visit). Now we know how far Bobby Petrino will go.

No. He didn’t offer $10,000 for their soul.

But here’s an interesting item via SportsByBrooks and ArkansasSports360. Arkansas athletics/football/Petrino/Beelzebub leased a 10-foot-by-36-foot billboard in Yuma, Ariz., which according to Mapquest is 1,406 miles from Fayetteville, Ark.

The billboard on Interstate 8 reads: “Arkansas Football. Visit ThisIsArkansasFootball.com.”

The cost:  $1,704.

Petrino’s objective was to land prospect Aaron Douglas, an offensive tackle from Arizona Western Junior College. He failed. Douglas decided to go to Alabama instead. Score one for Nick Saban.  (Not sure if the $1,704 therefore qualifies as a business loss for tax purposes.)

Petrino did manage to sign three other recruits from Arizona, but they were from the Phoenix area, about 200 miles away.

We can’t be sure to what extent this practice of roadside solicitation will grow. (”Hey, mister? Can I interest you in room and board?”) But if you see an Arkansas football billboard within the Georgia state boundaries, please alert me. I’ll want to take a look at it, right after I swing by the market for a dozen eggs.

What an absolute waste of money. Quite frankly, the recruiting process is so out of line we almost have to create a Tea Party atmosphere to rein it in … but I wouldn’t want Sarah Palin leading the charge.

You are obsessed with Bobby Petrino, aren’t you – like a jilted lover? Both Petrino and the Falcons have moved on to better things, so can’t we just move on? I mean, it’s not like I’m a fan of Petrino, but I’m not trying to find out about everything the man does so I can criticize it. Jeff, it’s time to move on.

Yes, a total waste of money – all for a recruit that maybe has a 50/50 chance of actually working out?

And there is an Auburn billboard on I-85 North right into the City of Atlanta and they just signed 3 Metro Atlanta players in the 2011 class and 2 other Georgians would see it if the entered into the city limits.

Georgia State place billboard on I-75 South at exit 205 and at various places on the Northside.

This is not an uncommon practice and Arizona has produced some talented players in teh last recruiting cycle.

Its the same as any of the other big time schools who put football billboards up in Atlanta. I believe Auburn was the first. They had one on I-75 for awhile. Who cares. Its cheaper than getting on a plane, renting a car, and going to that kid. Who cares Jeff. This is almost as dumb as the blog about changing UGAs bloodlines.

Jose,

If you can outrun the Feds, there is a good chance you can outrun the Alabama defensive backs too.

Come to Arkansas.

No one cares what Bobby Quit-trino is doing in Ar-kansas. He had the best QB in the league and lost four games and RUINED the SEC’s dominance over Ohio State. Meh.

Pretty smart deal if you ask me.Lets see that’s $198,296 less than what Aubarn paid for their top recruit- But then again the return on the investmant wasnt bad either.Just saying

GT Alum,
Petrino deserves every harsh word ever said about him. He also recently stole away one of our recruits, so there’s a new reason not to like him if you’ve forgotten about what he did to the Falcons so quickly.

Petrino was, is, and always will be a scumbag.

Most of the time I would agree with you, however there are those select individuals to whom no quantity or frequency boundaries of obsessive criticism should apply–and one of these individuals is Bobby Petrino!

Leave Jeff along on this one–he has the masses on his side!

RambleOn84,

Quite frankly, who hasn’t taken a recruit from us lately?

And I haven’t forgotten what he did, but the Falcons have a better coach and a better team now. Quite frankly, I think we’re better off because Petrino tucked tail and ran away. I just don’t see the point in obsessing over every little thing he does. Hell, the best thing we could probably do is ignore the guy as much as possible. You know the saying – there’s not such thing as bad publicity.

Tech and UGA have the most bandwagon fans i have ever seen.

Tech Tard – how will Arkansas lose 5 SEC games this year? They will be even better than last season.

Gordy LaChance – Arkansas lost 3 games total last season. 2 games to #1 teams and the State game.

Glad to see that UGA kept their dominance over the Big Least and that Tech couldnt beat a MWC team. Total dominance in the state of GA!! UGA would take Petrino in a heart beat if they had the chance.

RambleOn84 – i am a proud Arkansas fan and i love Petrino. yes he did some shady stuff but that was like 4 years ago, its time to move on. There is no way Petrino goes anywhere in the next 2 years. he has an $18 million mutual buy out clause in his contract and he cannot coach anywhere in the SEC for 5 years. That’s how not to get snake bitten. and oh yeah, how is that dynamic triple offense crap working out at tech? going from 11-3 to 6-7 is pretty terrible.

i am very happy with him……

tech runs the ball, no suprise there. they ran the ball so much against UGA they lost. if you out rush your opponent by 300 yards, you should not get beat by a TD. thats a wasted offense and until they get a qb that can throw the ball and run it, they will always be average and a one dimensional offense.

For all of you who critisize CMR, think about it. He is a darn good coach, decent man and will be around UGA football for a long time.

I am a Falcons fan, but I have a hard time blaming Petrino for skipping out. That place was a mess, a lunatic asylum being run by Vick, MeAngelo and the rest of the hoods.

Oh, and choosing Petrino over Richt? Don’t think you’ll get many UGA fans to accept that argument.
