Crowell’s recruitment aside, Washaun Ealey did this to himself (Update III)

Washaun Ealey is in a deep hole with coach Mark Richt.

Washaun Ealey is in a deep hole with coach Mark Richt.

(UPDATED AT 7 p.m. with Mark Richt statement.)

For the past two months at least — or since about the time most believed Georgia would land running back Isaiah Crowell in recruiting — there have been rumors that Washaun Ealey might transfer to Georgia Southern.

But what happened Tuesday when Ealey was suspended indefinitely isn’t about Crowell. It’s about Ealey –and maybe a little about coach Mark Richt.

Ealey has been inconsistent as a player, which is why the Bulldogs so desperately needed to land Crowell on national letter of intent day. But the more significant issues with the sophomore relating to his future in Athens have been off the field. Ealey’s arrest for a hit-and-run incident last summer — after multiple warnings about driving with a suspended license — infuriated Richt.

Rumors have been flying for the past 24 hours that Ealey last week missed a “punishment run,” which are handed out for things like missing tutoring sessions. Rumors morphed into conclusions that Ealey was kicked off the team. If that’s true, nobody is saying it. Georgia’s official response for now is only that Ealey is still on the team.

UPDATE: Here’s a statement from Richt:

“We have certain expectations and standards that apply to all our student-athletes. We expect them to do things the right way, the Georgia way. If Washaun does things the Georgia way, he’ll be back in good standing.”

But Ealey might want to take this as a hint, and transfer. He has two years of eligibility left and he’s in a pretty deep hole with Richt. Working his way out of that now might be impossible and transferring might be his best option. Richt has become increasingly “tough on crime” in the past year, which is a good sign.

Since signing day, we’ve learned to what lengths Richt went to land Crowell. Debbie Crowell, the player’s mother, confirmed to our Steve Hummer that Richt had Georgia players line up in an offensive formation in the new indoor practice facility during Crowell’s official visit. The only vacant position was running back. An excerpt from the story:

The 18-year-old and his family were shown to Richt’s new office, overlooking the recently completed indoor practice facility. As they visited, the Crowells noticed activity down below. Players began filing onto the practice field.

“We got up and looked out,” said Debbie Crowell, Isaiah’s mother. “I didn’t know what was going on, but Isaiah could tell that they were getting into formation. And there wasn’t a tailback.”

The stage was set. Richt escorted the family down to the field. Crowell was handed a Georgia jersey — No. 1 on the back — and a helmet and asked if he wanted to take that empty spot in the backfield. Debbie Crowell remembers Richt painting the scene of next season’s opener against Boise State, asking her son if he could see himself in that jersey and helmet, behind that offensive line, starting his career in the din of the Georgia Dome.

“Yes, sir, I can,” Isaiah said.

“My baby was excited. He was ready to go,” Debbie said.

Assuming Ealey learned of that, he couldn’t feel too great about his future in Athens.

Another running back, Caleb King, has been a disappointment and rumors of his exit also have circulated. The difference is that King has only one season of eligibility remaining and it might not be worth it to transfer.

When Richt recruited Crowell, he told him to imagine himself as Georgia’s starting running back. The coach then went public after his signing, saying Crowell could be “carrying the rock” as the starting back in the opener against Boise State.

But this is not all about Crowell’s potential. It’s about the way Ealey has imploded. There was a time it was his job to lose — and he lost it.

“Wonder how ya would react to a bunch of losers calling him/her a thug”

The term “thug” is in reference to people who go to jail for stealing, raping, robbing etc… It doesn’t matter what skin color said person is.

Then don’t make claims like this: That guy was good for a 15 yard penalty every game.

nah, i’ll still call him out for it no matter what. LSU had a similar player (Mingo) who was called seemingly every game for a facemask on kickoffs. He had two in one game then followed up that performance with yet another facemask call the next game. Those might be his only penalties but I still feel he is good for a penalty every game.

What we have learned from some of the more delusional UGA envied posters
1. Mark Richt is not strict enough, should exercise more discipline OR
RIcht shouldn’t discipline players who are not following team rules
Chizik, Saban, Johnson, fill in the blank do/do not discipline players for violating team rules, but whatever they do is okay.

2. Returning Georgia players are upset with the Dream Team concept, and publicity the newcomers are getting. (Please list at least one link or bit of information to back up this claim).

3. Recruiting gimmicks such as coaches pulling up in stretch limos are okay, but it is an unpardonalble sin to suggest that a UGA running back recruit MAY get to carry the ball in his first game, nothing guaranteed.

4. Even though Aaron Murray has been an exemplary student-athlete, Richt should punish him anyway because Mett was punished. Through some twisted logic, this would be showing “fairness” to those knuckleheads who merited suspension.

5. It has been reported in the media that a Heisman winning QB piled up 13 traffic violations while at UF, yet never was suspended even a quarter or half of a game.
This sort of action would have resulted in a number of arrests in Athens, and certainly missed games.

6. Almosf every member of the Dream Team was recruited by other SEC/ACC schools. I know the internet is like the Wild, Wild West, but I think it is sad that people literate enough to type out a message refer to these young men as thugs, criminals, dumbbells, etc. It says a lot more about the poster than it does about the high school senior being talked about.

I’m looking forward to the beatdown we are going to put on Auburn next year in Athens with the thug Fairley in the NFL or jail and Cammie spending Daddy’s money, it’s a sure bet.

“I don’t even need to open up the link to know what you are talking about. Sure it was a great run, but without the presence of Cam, that run never happens.”

Excuses, excuses, excuses. Cam handed him the ball. ANY QB could do that.
______________________________________________________________

Only Tebow has been the kind of running threat that Cam was though. And at that point Cam had run for what 180 yards already on LSU? Like I said, it was a great run but if Cam is not a QB, that run does not happen. I think 3 guys all went with Cam on the play leaving the RB with a ton of running room. It was poor tackling on LSU’s part but again, that run doesn’t happen without Cam. And I can prove this because LSU did not give up a run like that again all year. Davis from Arkansas ran over LSU but he had to grind those yards out at 5-6 yards a run.

Everybody always accused UGA players of being “thugs.” Ne’erdowells, maybe, but thugs? Only Montez Robinson has really done anything thuggish. One could argue Downtin, but neither I nor anybody else knows the factual details surrounding that bar fight. Maybe Mett’s indiscretions could be called thuggish. All are gone btw.

But the rest of them? They’re thugs b/c they drink under age? Smoke weed? Drink and drive? Drive on a suspended license? Fail to pay parking tickets? All of these latter crimes hardly rise to the level of “thuggery.” These are stupid crimes, but not violent or anything of that sort. Perhaps socially irresponsible, but not thuggish. So, why do y’all call them thugs? For those of you who went to college and actually drank (the majority of people in college), are you telling me that you didn’t have friends who did the same stupid stuff? You jerks wouldn’t be so quick to judge a white fraternity, for example, as being thugs, simply b/c that particular chapter had a sizeable number of members arrested for alcohol-related crimes (as most do).

We all know that you played most of the Auburn/UGA game on your back. We also know that UGA fans like to trash talk before every game and then lick their wounds after every game.

“I’m looking forward to the beatdown we are going to put on Auburn next year in Athens with the thug Fairley in the NFL or jail and Cammie spending Daddy’s money, it’s a sure bet.”

Beat down is two words, ma’am. You’re girlish figure won’t save you from the new rounds of sacking you’ll get in Jordan Hare West.

Nick is going number one in the draft and Cam will go number 10. Trust me, you were a tackling dummy to them.

“Just like 4 out of the last 5 years. Now that the paid help has left, back to same ole’ loser irrelevant Auburn.’

dude, drop it. I’m over it. It was the McCalleb 70 yard TD run. Auburn ran all over us. Cam ran for like 215, 70 from the McCalleb run and yet the score was still only 24-17 and LSU had the ball with 5 minutes remaining but because of Fairley dominating the o-line, our QB’s couldn’t do anything. Again, I still feel that without Cam, that long run doesn’t happen and LSU might win that game. It’s over with now, and I’ll have to wait until next year.

And guess what? (again: morons) The Auburn family is not at all a parallel to UGA’s dream team. The family recognizes every stakeholder, and gives the kids something to live up to as Auburn men. Your “Dream Team” just writes the ticket for 1/4 of your team to automatically think they are a gift from God. You think that won’t cause problems in the locker room, especially that cheesy formation stunt Richt pulled without a tailback?

We had a primadonna. Two, in fact. Cam Newton and Nick Fairley. But i’ll be damned if they didn’t back it up. Georgia has proven time and time again the past few years that they are a program without class or heart.
