Title odds: Falcons 16-1, Dogs 50-1, Jackets 150-1

Mike Smith's Falcons are 16-1 to win Super Bowl.

Mike Smith's Falcons are 16-1 to win next year's Super Bowl.

Richt's Dogs (50-1) and Johnson's Jackets (150-1) both long odds in BCS race.

Mark Richt's Bulldogs (50-1) and Paul Johnson's Yellow Jackets (150-1) both face long odds in the next BCS race.

Earlier I gave you my rankings of the 32 NFL teams going into next season, which I should note originally was posted BEFORE Green Bay defeated Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl Sunday.

Now we move onto the rankings that have dollar signs connected to it.

The following “futures” odds have been posted by the online sportsbook Bodog. Odds obviously come with no guarantees. That’s why Las Vegas can afford really big hotels.

But it’s worth noting that the Falcons, despite their lopsided home playoff loss to the Packers, have not dropped at all in the minds of oddsmakers. They’re listed at 16-1 to win the Super Bowl. That’s tied for eighth overall and the third-best odds among NFC teams, behind only Green Bay (7-1) and New Orleans (14-1). Dallas and Philadelphia also are 16-1.

Bodog is less optimistic about the outlook for the two major locals in the BCS title picture. Georgia is listed at 50-1 to win the national championship. That seems about right. It ranks tied for fifth among SEC teams (led by Alabama at 15-2).

Oklahoma is the overall BCS favorite at 7-2. Auburn, which is the defending national champion but loses Cam Newton and Nick Fairley, is only 70-1.

Georgia Tech? Try 150-1. That ranks sixth among ACC teams (led by Florida State at 10-1).

I pass this along for entertainment purposes only, of course. Feel free to debate.

Odds of Mike Bobo running the ball up the middle for a one yard gain on every 2nd and long = 1-1.

Georgia doesn’t need to go 14-0 in 2011. Just get a little better than 6-7, go at least 9-4 (if you lose to Florida) or 8-5 (if you beat Florida) and fans will feel great. Most Georgia fans are realistic, you don’t go from 6-7 to 14-0 too often.

I find it interesting Jerry that you have us losing to Carolina at home but beating Miss St. at home. MSU is the better team of those two IMO.

I’m with ESPN that SC is a lot better than MSU in 2011. But, according to ESPN, Georgia is pretty close to SC, Auburn, and Florida in 2011.

5 toughest games will be:
Boise
Auburn
South Carolina
Florida
Miss St.

sandman,

With Jenkins stepping in a Nose Guard, let’s just say I feel sorry for Tech when they play us since they won’t have Anthony Allen running the ball up the gut at will against our once undersized D-line.

They will be forced to run the option…….. and we all know how that turned out…… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KDrPUcUsFY

(Here they come!!! Here come the Techies to tell me how many AWESOME rushing yards they accumulated in a LOSING effort against their Big Brother…….)

I think that coach T in the weight room and the other coaches have this as lots of bulletin board material for the next seven months. It is liable to get ugly in the Dome on September 3rd for Boise State.

I’d think Georgia’s odds are about as good as Florida’s, 15-1. But Vegas is probably banking on Richt has a terrible record against Florida and likely will lose the SEC East because of that match up. Richt’s 2-8 against Florida, Florida is in his head, without a doubt. South Carolina is about on Georgia’s level right now, if they get Clowney, I’d say SC could win the East again.

Richt’s pandering to Crowell with the vacant tailback drama reinforces the sense of entitlement for one player while reinforcing the double standard enjoyed by certain “special” players. This is not the mark of a good coach or even a smart one.

The odds makers make a nice bit of cash over their predictions, but it is a mute point until the teams get ready to play. What were the odds of the super bowl matchup? What were the odds that Auburn was going to win the NC. What are the odds they keep it? These folks that predict or set the odds, do so to make more money. I put as much stock in them, as I do the government we have in D.C. right now fixing what is wrong with our economy. OK, well maybe the football odds are a bit more realistic.

Georgia has a real shot to have a big year, they’re right there with South Carolina, Florida and Auburn, I’m not so sure about Boise. But if Richt can win 1 or 2 of those 3 (SC/Fla/Aub), it sets up for a nice season. If SC gets Clowney, and they likely will, SC probably wins the game against Georgia. Miss St. is usually tough, but they lost Def Coach Diaz, so Georgia likely wins this one.

Probably looking at 7-5 to 9-3 season. Key games are the most winnable ones SC/Fla/Aub/Miss St.

I don’t expect Georgia to beat Boise State.

Jerry

Without AJ Green, and with Georgia’s recently weak running attack, teams will bring 8 in the box, to stop the run. They will try and make young Aaron Murray beat them throwing deep where Murray’s the most inaccurate, it worked well last year, so that’s the strategy everybody will use until Murray or the running game finally wins a game against a winning team.

GA Tech is never rated highly or given good odds – especially pre-season. This is true when we won the ACC and went to the Orange Bowl. This is true when we won the National Championship in 1990.

As CPJ often says – it only matters what happens on the field.

I prefer not to be in the ’spot light’ pre-season. Otherwise there is a rather large target on your back!

Update for all you “guilty until proven innocent” jerks out there…..

From the Columbus Dispatch…

The path to finally signing a letter of intent with Ohio State now seems open for Chris Carter.

The offensive lineman from Cleveland John F. Kennedy will not be charged in a case that began with his arrest last week for suspected misdemeanor sexual imposition.

Cleveland spokeswoman Maureen Harper said today that the city prosecutor’s office concluded its investigation Friday, and “after a full review, there was not enough evidence of sexual contact to charge Mr. Carter with a crime.”

Carter had been accused of fondling several girls at his school as he measured them for ROTC uniforms.

The OSU coaching staff held open Carter’s spot in the 2011 class while they waited for the outcome of the legal case.

Those SEC odds are way outta whack…TN at 125? They have a better shot than UGA, Auburn and either of the Miss schools…that wide of a gap is way much. Sounds to me like Shlayball made them up by throwing darts at a board. For UGA fans, Jerry, who only see 3-4 losses, take off the red panties, I mean glasses. You’ll be lucky to match last years win total. SC/FL winner wins the east.

I’m saying 7-5 to 9-3 year for Georgia.

If Richt beat either Boise or SC, probably a 8-4 or 9-3 season.

If Richt loses both, likely a 7-5 year.

If Richt wins both of the 1st 2 games, will go 13-1 or 14-0.

Jerry

February 7th, 2011
12:20 pm

Losing Belin & Searels was big. No way Richt can replace them with as good or better coaches this season, just won’t have the money, or length of contract to get anyone as good or better. That means you’re looking at another bad season, could be Richt’s last. Losing 2 coaches was big, and will be very tough to recover.

Jeff,

Yesterday, you had the Falcons at 6 and I suggested with our defense a ranking between 10-15 was more in order. Well, the guys that make money on this have them tied for anywhere between 8-11.

Gatorman

Hey, the odds across the board look good to me. Until the Falcons get to the NFC championship game they can’t be taken seriously. They will replace their defensive coordinator, so a wait for that to happen also slows the growth of the team. It was the defense that lost the Green Bay game, allowing GB to hold the ball almost 2/3 of the game.

1-1=Odds that a Techie will say one or more of the following things over the course of the 2011 season:

“We would have won if we hadn’t fumbled.”

“We can’t recruit like the football factories because good football players are all dumb and can’t handle our watered down calculus classes in the management school.”

“Paul Johnson outcoached (insert coach that just handed Paul Johnson his azz).”

“If we could get a better defense, better special teams, a passing game, bigger offensive linemen, more depth on the D-line, more depth at linebacker, more depth in the secondary, a better secondary, tackle better, hold on to the ball better, and get more players that are better suited to run Johnson’s unstoppable offense, we could contend for the national title. All the pieces are there.”

“Georgia SHOULD beat us because we suck.”
