Isaiah Crowell: From recruit to key to Georgia’s season?

Two young Bulldogs (one human): Isaiah Crowell of Georgia and his little pal. (AP photo)

(Updated with Mark Richt comments.)

ATHENS — Isaiah Crowell just signed his letter of intent to attend Georgia. So is it too early to assume he’s the key to next season? I don’t think so.

Crowell is a 5-star recruit. He’s the nation’s consensus top running back. Highlights and statistics from Carver-Columbus project possible greatness. But we’ve seen too much to assume anything. Most recently, we’ve seen Caleb King, a former 5-star recruit who has been a huge disappointment.

But if Crowell lives up to the hype, he will become something even more important than the best player in Georgia’s recruiting class. He’ll be the most important player on the Bulldogs’ roster next season.

When asked how he sees Crowell contributing, coach Mark Richt said, “Heavily. … I wouldn’t be shocked to see him running that rock in the Dome against Boise State on the opening play if he does what he’s supposed to do.”

The Bulldogs have lacked a lot of things lately, but a solid running game tops the list. Poor offensive line play is part of the reason. The other is that the Dogs haven’t found a consistent — or even above-average — replacement for Knowshon Moreno. Last season the team ranked 10th in the SEC in rushing (ahead of only Vanderbilt and Tennessee) and 73rd in the nation. The passing game was fifth in the SEC, 40th in the nation. The onus was on a freshman quarterback, Aaron Murray, and A.J. Green.

King has struggled. Washaun Ealey has been inconsistent and generally a disappointment.

Crowell can make a difference. Great running backs can cover up for deficiencies on a team, particularly on the offensive line. A great running back in college can have at least as big an impact on an offense as a great quarterback. Look what Marcus Lattimore did for South Carolina.

Georgia needs Crowell to be their Lattimore next season. He’ll certainly get the opportunity. Coach Mark Richt is not going to come out with a depth chart Friday that lists Crowell first but the freshman will be given every opportunity to win the starting job.

“I’m gonna be a Dog,” Crowell said after putting on a Georgia hat. For the perfect touch, somebody then handed him a bulldog puppy, and the newest Bulldog held him up in the air.

He was the Dogs’ 25th recruit to sign his letter of intent — and easily the most important one of all.

Bigggest recruit for UGA since Herschel.

I wouldn’t say King or Ealey struggled, they both averaged over 5 yards a carry.

Hopefully, Bobo will call more running plays this season.

Boise State’s last eight recruiting classes ranked 73, 72, 73, 78, 57, 64, 60, 97. The Broncos’ record in the last five years: 61-5 with two BCS bowls.

And when they met on the field UGA crushed Boise St 48-13

If UGA had that schedule they would have been 64-1 over that stretch.

Case Closed.

Trying to hype him up as the next Marcus Lattimore is pretty unfair to the kid. It’s pretty rare that a running back can make that kind of impact that fast regardless of who they are. He is a great recruit but don’t make him out to be a once in a lifetime recruit. It could mess with his head similar to Harrison Barnes of UNC.

that’s alot to ask of a true freshman. at Carver, he had a massive O line with many D1 recruits that paved the way for him. he is a very good player, but i haven’t seen anything to make me believe he is Hershal 2.0. if UGA gets a good line coach and develops the players better, then he could be a stud. everyone needs to step back for a second and let this kid fit in at his own pace. BTW… King and Ealey are good backs and Malcome could be a horse for them if utilized the right way. there is enough talent at RB to give Crowell time to get adjusted…

Crowell to Georgia? I don’t think anyone was surprised by that one. Even most of the bama fans figured he was going to the home state school.

Can he elevate the Georgia program all by himself? Nope. Good back that could be very good but for every Marcus Lattimore there are 10 Caleb Kings. Crowell won’t be a Caleb King but he won’t be a Lattimore either. And no matter how good you are it all starts up front with the O-line and that’s where Georgia seems to be lacking.

For all who are not short-sighted–the evidence for Richt being UGA’s greatest coach is very convincing. The team is rebuilding. Richt needs to win 8 games next year, he will follow with 10 and third year will be in BCS Nat. Champ. game. German Dawgs Fan I agree with you that the passing game without AJ will slide, but remember we didnt have him for 4 games. We dont need an AJ, although that would be nice, we need T King, Marlon Brown, and Rontavious Wooten to step up and play as good as Micheal Johnson or Fred Gibson. If teams dont fear Orson Charles next year they will pay dearly(IE Leonard Pope). With Crowell comming in, we will have a true every down back, with Murrays ability to run, short yardage wont be an issue any more. The Defense really needs John Jenkins to sign on Saturday. If we have Jenkins at nose, Ray Drew at WLB, Boykin and Smith in the secondary, we could get scary good real fast.

Well, goes to show, given the way he handled himself and the school he chose, he is bound to amount to nothing at a school that won’t even keep their coach after this year.

By the way ESPN has it’s recruiting rankings out.

1. FSU
2. Auburn
3. Alabama
4. USC
5. Texas
6. Georgia
7. Florida
8. OU
9. Ohio St
10. Clemson

So, looks like UGA didn’t come close to the defending national champions, Auburn for those of you who suffer from grade inflation, nor Alabama.

It’s a nice number, being number 6, but it will not amount to anything just like every year before.

Jeff,

You mentioned how lowly Boise and TCU’s recruiting rankings were the past several years yet they end up in the top 10 so your conclusion is that recruiting rankings mean very little? Not so fast. You also leave out that Boise and TCU rack up wins mostly against other teams with even lower rated recruiting classes.

Secondly, if recruiting rankings mean so little then why is it that the teams with the top ranked recruiting classes consistently are the same teams that are fixtures in the top 10. The Ohio States, Alabamas, LSUs, Oklahomas, Texas, and Florida. Now Texas and Florida obviously had off years last year but the fact is that over the previous 5-10 years those 2 teams were consistent top 10 programs on the field as well as in the recruiting rankings.

Alabama is a good example- terrible recruiting rankings under Shula and terrible records as well. Top 5 rankings every year under Saban and top 10 finishes every year.

Bottom line is that if you look at the bcs teams that are consistently in the top 10 in most years you will also see a direct correlation where those teams are also consistently in the top 10 in recruiting in most years. Just a fact that is verified by statistical analysis.

Bringing up Boise and TCU is comparing apples with oranges since those teams rarely play bcs powers. TCU over Wisconsin and that’s pretty much it for TCU. Boise over OU and maybe one other bcs team lately and that’s pretty much it for Boise.

IF he turns out to be our Lattimore, he will be the biggest signee of the last several years. IF…King and Ealey were, as you say, hugely recruited, as well. K and E averaging over 5 per carry points out that it may have been the plays, not the players, that were suspect. Maybe not, but don’t dismiss it.

Originally from NY son and have lived in both Georgia and Alabama. What makes Atlanta great is certainly not the native Georgians son. Even you know that. I find it amusing that some of these so-called Auburn fans talk about their program like it has been a national power house of a team for the last 20yrs. Or even 5yrs. Auburn was above avg. at best before one incredible season. One that included a 1st year qb and nt who probably were the best at their positions in the country. Congratulations on the NC and a great recruiting class but act like you can handle it. Be careful not to assume things or take them for granted. Remember, before last year your program was considered to be down and maybe a notch below UGA.

Willie McClendon was the best rb I ever seen @ uga until H.Walker came along. Crowell has all the tools H.Walker possess except Walker’s power. Crowell has power too but not quite like H.Walker. That statement is very “un Mark Richt’ish”, who always seems to err on the side of caution. To put this much pressure on a Freshman “could be” looking for trouble. There are no more “Herschel Walkers”, and remember, he didn’t see action until what, the fourth game?

Wow crazy to see an Alabama residence bad mouthing Georgia. Oh yeah Auburn sure owns UGA in football that 54 wins to 52 losses (.509) is a thing of beauty. And comparing Alabama’s educational system to Georgia? Wow show me one published report on the state of educational systems that would rank the Alabama educational system higher than Georgia. Georgia is normally middle to the pack or tilted toward the bottom. However, Alabama is consistently in the bottom 5. Also, great repeated use of the word son in your post it really makes you sound like you have that top notch education, son. Now on to football and the significance of this class. No this class does not mean that UGA will be improved next year. All it means is they have players that with the proper coaching and training have the ability to improve the team. Depending on what happens with John Jenkins on Saturday not only is this class rated highly but it also addressed positions of need. A lot of the previous classes for UGA seemed to be heavy on recruits that did not address needs. Furthermore, all you people downing any kid that signed with UGA, Auburn, GT, Bama, Florida, etc… instead of your school of choice and saying they are going to be a bust need to grow up. These are 18 year old’s that are choosing the best path for them in life and I wish any young player much success until they play my team. With that being said grow up and before you start spewing your hate do some research. Plus, I would think all you people that hate UGA would want them to get back to the 10-2 and 11-1 seasons. That way Richt would keep his job, because if he can’t coach like most people like to point out imagine what would happen if we got a (in the critics view) more competent coach and staff to match the talent.

Yeah took me a while to write that post Dean. For honest disclosure I’m a UGA fan but all these people who bad mouth any kid who doesn’t choose their school have no life. Regardless of any teams record in football the sun will still rise and set the next. Yes I would love for UGA to win a national title but I also know that that can’t/won’t happen every year. Auburn had a 53 year gap in recognized titles so sometimes it is a while between titles. But sports in general should have taught us that anything can happen in any college football season. Seriously, I knew UGA wasn’t going to when a title during the just completed seasons. But I definitely didn’t see Auburn going undefeated. On another note I went to Carver-Columbus when Jasper Sanks was there and anyone who did any research could of seen that character would be an issue. Furthermore, the first game of his Senior year his ankle got injured pretty good and I don’t think he ever quite had the same burst.

It is up to Mark Richt and this coaching staff to turn Georgia around. Not Crowell. Give this kid a break. He just signed his LOI. Leave him alone now. He hasn’t attended a class or a college practice yet. It is up to the team to turn this thing, not one kid. I hope he will have a long and great career at Georgia, but Richt, Bobo, and however is going to coach the offensive line will be most responsible for righting the ship.

I wouldn’t say that Ealey has been a disapointment. He is a decent RB playing behind an underacheiving OL. I saw Crowell play on GPTV and wasn’t all that impressed with him. Hope he proves me wrong. CMR is very high on him, so maybe I just didn’t see enough of him to form a good opinion.

John Jenkins? Who is he? A JUCO player? A good Nose Tackle JUCO prospect you say? Nope. The no. 1 rated JUCO player in the US and the no. 1 rated nose tackle in the US is me Jessie Williams. 6′4 330lbs, 580 lb bench press. And yes. I already singned. As a matter of fact I already enrolled for the winter semester at Alabama. And yes. I am the only and only next Terrence Cody.

It could be a week, a month maybe 6 months, but everyone outside barn country knows and in reality even the most dirt stupid auburn fan knows that title and every win from their “championship” year will be taken away.

We should also try and remember guys like nick fairley and rolls tide really have nothing else in their sad little empty lifes going for them than the temporary victories of a college they didn’t even graduate from.

Anyone who is a fan of a team should go in with the expectations that this is the year. I mean realistically no team is going to win the championship every year but if you can’t get excited about the possibility why even be a fan of sports in general? I mean Cubs fans no realistically they aren’t going to win the World Series but every year they think they are and have that glimmer if hope. It’s called being a fan! It’s nice to dream, but just because you dream doesn’t mean you actually believe it’s going to happen. But it always is interesting how people can come on other teams boards or sites and talk smack about their fans and how great there team is/was. Wasn’t it not to long ago when Alabama was in the crapper? Didn’t UGA own Florida at one time? Didn’t GT have UGA’s number at one type. Sports goes in cycles and I for one know that any given day or season can yield shocking results. And I for one will always believe in my team whoever that may be until they give me reason not too. For example, like losing to Colorado!

Tideman that is the first reasonable post by an opposing fan on this board. The both Alabama and Georgia have great classes. Furthermore, even though I am a UGA fan I’m extremely glad looking at the class rankings that it looks like the SEC as a whole kicked arse in recruiting. Zeke Calhoun had a stout defense. Lets give him credit he did end up with 87 yards but from what I saw it appeared leg was still bothering him. He has really got to get in the weight room. Gator man you do realize sometimes freshman do make a difference right? Is Crowell going to be a great back? Maybe not but he was the consensus top running back in this recruiting cycle so I’ll take him. He could go either way but the ability is there and everyone that evaluates talent agrees. Sometimes talent is squandered but let’s see the kid in action before we call him a bust or success. Time will tell what UGA has but that time isn’t now.

Also, all you people who like to point out the bad seeds at Georgia do some fact checking. Yeah they have arrests but isn’t the point of this whole thing higher education? Well in that regard there is only once school that has a higher graduation rate than UGA and that is Vanderbilt. So unless your a commodore fan and they normally don’t talk smack they have to much class for that (They really deserve a great team) you shouldn’t be crowing too much about Georgia.

Just the Truth

February 2nd, 2011
4:57 pm

@ Tideman The oversigning issue that Alabama, LSU, and Old Miss have perfected into an art form does not apply to the UGA recruiting class of 2011. If you would do a minimal amount of research you would know that Georgia went into the signing period with enough scholarships available to sign and issue scholarships to all of their signees. No one is getting kicked off the team in the next few weeks to make room for “something new and improved”. CMR is probably the most ethical coach in the business and his record speaks for itself. On the other hand Nick Saban had -what 12 scholarship slots with 25 signees. Don’t preach that trash here! I hope the SEC wakes up and end this practice once and for all before the 2012 recruiting cycle rolls around. Great job Coach Richt! We are all proud of all of the hard work of the UGA staff and are looking forward to a brighter future.

Jeff,

Please Please Please, save this article and all the comments associated with it.

I do not have a crystal ball, or a Marty McFly Delorean Time Machine to see into the future this fall, however the utter enthusiasm and bold predictions made by many many Georgia fans on this article is just astonishing. I would love to be able to read these same notes after the first 4 games of the season.

The second thing is all of these misinformed fans comparing a win against a Boise St team from 4 or 5 years ago to the veteran laiden team Boise St. will bring into the Georgia Dome in September. No comparison. Comparing apples to apples Boise St has gotten better while UGA has dropped down a notch or two and if you think 17 to 22 years olds psyches are not important think again and the most recent memory for many of these kids is a loss to UCF.

Finally, it was a good day for Georgia, but realistically this signing class will probably have 3 to 5 players who contribute early unless the current Bulldog team players suffer injuries.

My three cents worth.

Save these article Jeff.

Speaking of coaching Richt needs to do some. I like Richt and think he can be a good coach but sometimes it’s like he doesn’t pay attention to details. For instance, spring practice last year Murray tried to be bad and wear gloves (Can’t think of many Qb’s that do well with them except Kurt Warner) then said he stopped because he couldn’t get a good grip on the ball and was losing stuff on throws. Okay, so I as a fan know this you would think a coach would know this as well. Bowl game comes and Murray who all season hasn’t worn gloves breaks them out. That is details and after the first few series I would of ripped them off of him and not wait until near the end of the game to do it. Details is what Georgia needs to work on and Richt needs to show some fire. I want to seem him chew some arse when someone screws up.

So, going forward, what does today mean? Many of these recruits, like all students, will have trouble adjusting to their school or new team, get injured, loose interest, or have , ahem, other issues.

Auburn loaded-up, but lost Cam, so maybe they are more of a long-term favorite?

Florida signed some good ones, but perhaps the coaching change and emerging FSU will be a problem next year?

Georgia did what they needed to do, signed playmakers and players in positions of need, but will need a major butt kicking from the new OL coach and in the weight room to catch-up. Richt and Bobo will continue the maddening playcalling and time management errors, but Richt is an excellent program coach (despite the past two seasons) and the team will benefit with the upgrade in talent.

Shocked S Carolina got taken by Clemson…Gamefowl seem to be on the decline. (too bad for Lattimore)

Alabama seems to be poised in the short-term, but the conference is no cake walk.

84dawg I bleed the red and black. Not just football but in all sports. The offensive line did get manhandled in the 2nd half by Auburn’s front. Newton manhandled everyone this past season. But you were calling Fairley out as dirty. A lot of the best players in football are dirty. UGA should of done something about it instead of waiting until the game was out of reach to man up. That has always been one of my issues with the Richt teams is they tend to be soft. I love UGA but I am not some delusional fan that can’t sit here and not recognize the issues with the team,

Yeah, but hopefully not. I don’t know why the kid said Auburn if he really meant Bama.

“Newton manhandled everyone this past season. ”

Mmmmmmm, no he didn’t. He didn’t manhandle Oregon, Alabama, Clempson, Miss St etc..

“UGA should of done something about it instead of waiting until the game was out of reach to man up. ”

There’s absolutely nothing UGA could have done because Auburn was/is better than UGA.

Well he is the number 3 prospect in the country. But yeah kind of weird that he had this big press conference and then hours later changed in mind. I mean but this are kids so I don’t really have that big of a problem with the switch. Which he said it still may be Auburn just wants to think it over some more to be sure he is making the right choice. Which trust me I know from making a lot of stupid decisions that sometimes that can be the best thing.

Rolls – The WEs signed a GREAT class, particularly on the line, but Cam was a once in a generation talent. Even with the #2 QB in the class coming in, don’t you think Auburn will have a big drop-off in offense? How many wins for the WEs next year?

Well I meant in regards to what they thought were cheap shots. If you think a team/player is being dirty with you you push the boundaries too. Georgia didn’t until the end of the game when it didn’t matter.

I really wish Richt would take back the playcalling himself. Anyone else notice the decline started when he gave up playcalling? Leave Bobo as offensive coordinator but call the plays yourself a la Steve Spurrier.

Trust me, I’m not here predicting that Auburn will have a great season. Do I think they’ll lose 6 games, absolutely not. I think they’ll lose 3-4 games at the most. Remember, in 2009, Auburn didn’t have a defense but their offense was pretty darn good and had they had a defense they would have only lost 2 games. They were only blown out twice in 2009. Every other lose was close. Just ask Bama.

Rolls – oh no, I do not think Auburn will lose 6 games, or even 3; I do think that it will take AT LEAST 11-1 to get to Atlanta out of the West.

NSF – Richt says he is tied-in with the headsets and can change a play call. I do not know whose call it was to kick the FG against UCF after a 95 yard drive, but that person should not be making the call. The Dogs ran-up some points the last half of the season – maybe with the defense giving them some better opportunities this year Bobo will look better.

Yeah I don’t think Bobo is a bad coach I just think as a playcaller Richt is one of the best and that is one reason Georgia was so good early on. I understand he had this whole CEO vision of a head coach after a few years. But if you one of the best playcallers in football you need to do that.

It will come down to LSU and Bama. I think LSU is in a better position. Arkansas has no defense and they have a new quarterback, who is very very good. But, Petrino is predictable and everyone knows how to beat him. Defense.

Well didn’t have to be this year. Zach has 3 years left and so does Murray. So gives us 2 at the least and maybe 3. But if they both stay through senior year it will hapen in 2013 anyways during the season. Also, if Georgia doesn’t win next year they might be getting a new coach then all bets are off. Because it is not unprecedented for a new coach to come into a team like Georgia (with a lot of talent that may have been squandered) and win a national title the first year.

@Katherine: Honey…calm down…I’m just trying to laugh about the whole “Rivals stars” system which basically shuts out white athletes at the skills positions particularly. How many white WRs or RBs are in the Rivals “top 150″….its “Rivals” that is “entirely racist” not me. How many ’stars’ do you think Dallas Clark or Wes Welker would get from the Rivals system? Wes Welker backed into a D-1 scholorship at the last minute and Dallas Clark had to walk-on at Iowa before getting a scholorship his senior year. One is the best receiving TE in the NFL and the other has caught more passes than anyone else in the NFL the last four years….go figure. Oh yeah, I forgot, the leading rusher (yards and TDs) in the NCAA in 2009, Toby Gerhart, was listed as a three star Fullback by Rivals….even though he was the third leading rusher in U.S. highschool history…..there’s your “racism”……LMAO

Ranking recruiting classes is ridiculous. Georgia got a good bunch of players. Hopefully they will bring competition to the mix and push some of the older players. Crowley just needs to WORK like the rest of the Dawgs need to WORK. He is not the mesiah. He is very good, of course, but he was injured a lot, and it was AA ball. Let’s maybe not put the world on his shoulders.

Ealey runs hard. He is a good back. Caleb has his moments. The line needs work, and Georgia needs to find someone to do that job. Overall, they need to fix minds and attitudes and work bodies. Next year should be the “who’s got the guts and desire to play” year. There will be an improvement over 2010. Focus needs to be on those first two games.

Mark Richt’s done it again. Rabbit in a hat, rush the end zone after a touchdown, black-out, and now its the Dream Team. Tell the fans what they want to hear. He will never figure it out, gimmicks don’t win in the SEC. Ga has recruited in the top 10, 9 times out of the last 10 years. Results, no BCS championship. If this is the Dream Team, what is Alabama’s class. Dream Team +1……

After the arrests and academic casualties settle in as usual, I suspect at least eight in this class won’t make it past spring practice. I hope Crowell is as good as he was in the under armor game. Like CFB news said: is there a more over rated player than Crowell. Kid couldn’t carry Lattimores jock. See ya in ATL puppies. Just gonna make kicking your butt that much more fun. Plus now Richt has to win. He’ll never stand the pressure. Oh yeah, that great recruiting class was still behind 4 other sec teams and 2 acc teams.
