Arthur Blank still hasn’t recovered from Falcons’ playoff exit

A few nights after the Falcons were drop-kicked out of the playoffs, Arthur Blank and his two football lieutenants went out to dinner. There in a Midtown restaurant sat the team’s owner, the general manager (Thomas Dimitroff) and the coach (Mike Smith), emotionally facedown in their soup.

“It was just the three of us together, reflecting back,” Blank said. “It’s sort of like going to see a therapist. You go there to work through any issues you have and then you try to get ready for the future. You’re just trying to get some of the hurting out of the way so you can move on.”

For the record, that hasn’t happened yet with Blank.

He is as emotionally invested as any owner in professional sports. He admits he’s still psychologically hung over from the Falcons’ 48-21 loss in the Georgia Dome two weeks ago. He is going to Dallas for Super Bowl week – only he’s not really going to the Super Bowl.

“I leave Thursday, we have meetings and then the hosting owner [Jerry Jones] always has a party Thursday night,” Blank said. “Then Friday morning the commissioner has a press conference, and I’ll go to that. Friday afternoon I’ll go to radio row for interviews. Friday night is the commissioner’s party. Saturday we were going to have a league meeting but that’s been canceled, so I guess I’ve got some free time.”

And Sunday?

“I’m coming home Sunday morning — mostly because I’m still pissed about our game,” he said.

He allowed himself to think the Falcons could get to Dallas. He knew the 13-3 record, the bye week and two potential home playoff games didn’t come with guarantees. But what happened in the Georgia Dome blindsided him, as it did most.

“You don’t look ahead,” Blank said, “but we certainly believed we would get deeper than we did.”

He said no major reassessment of the franchise is needed. He still believes the Falcons are trending upward and have become one of the “national” and “relevant” franchises in the NFL, based on three consecutive winning seasons and two playoff berths in the Dimitroff-Smith-Matt Ryan era. He said he doesn’t think the loss will hurt the team’s marketing efforts in the offseason, although that’s probably more the salesman in him talking than the realist.

Blank said he doesn't blame the fans who couldn't bear to watch the Falcons any more and left in the third quarter.

Finally, there’s this: Blank says he has changed from the newbie sports owner who bought the franchise from the Smith family in 2002. He says he’s more “controlled.”

Comment: “My emotional thermometer is different than when I first became an owner.”

Maybe so. But not by much. The man still wears his emotions on his sleeve.

Late in the third quarter against Green Bay, he watched from his private box as the Packers scored their scored fifth consecutive touchdown to take a 42-14 lead. Fans began to stream out of the Georgia Dome.

“People said to me, ‘You must be upset about that,’” Blank said. “I said no. I wasn’t upset that they were leaving, I was upset about the way we were playing. The fans were incredibly supportive all year. After that third quarter, it would’ve taken a miracle just to come back and make the game competitive. It was like the fans were getting hit on the head with a hammer, and it wouldn’t stop. The only way they could make it stop was by leaving. So they left.”

Blank’s head was still throbbing the following week when NFL meetings were held in Atlanta. During a lunch break, he sat with New England owner Robert Kraft, whose team was stunned in its first playoff game by the New York Jets (the day after the Falcons’ loss).

“There we were, the owners of the two No. 1 seeds, having lunch,” Blank said, managing a chuckle. “Nobody else sat at our table. We were two sorry sacks. You never get used to it.”

Final story: Blank was inducted into the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame on Friday. It was there he came in contact with Kathleen Bertrand, a gospel singer who sang the national anthem at the event. Bertrand told Blank that she performed the anthem at the Falcons’ last playoff win in 2004. She had hoped to sing it at another game during the season but had trouble getting in contact with the right person.

“I said if I knew that, I would’ve made sure she sang it again [at the playoff game],” Blank said. “But it probably wouldn’t have made a difference.”

Not unless she could play cornerback.

I’m confident next year they’ll rise up and not let being a #1 seed get to their heads.

“Relevant” is not nor should be a goal. You think the Patriots or Steelers shoot for “relevant”? Organizations with low expectations achieve them. Seems to be a trend around Atlanta…Schuerholz calls a Division win a “Championship”. pff. Get real.

Unfortunately for this franchise, you have to be relevant first after 50 years of irrelevancy. Then you can shoot for Patriots or Steelers. The Pats were a sad sack franchise for a long time before they reached the promised land. Its an incremental process that at least appears to be starting. Now they have to work the past #1 draft pick busts out of the salary structure and replace them with playmakers, overcome the injury bugaboo that has set back a number of recent high round draft picks, and build a complete set of backup players.

At least Blank is being real when he says he is “pissed.” Look, I doubt the Falcons will win the Super Bowl, at least while they still reside in Atlanta. Our city just seems cursed on that front. But I do think Blank and his two cronies will have them in the playoffs once every two or three years on average. They are basically the Hawks with a better owner. Green Bay whipped them like Orlando did the Hawks. But you never know when Blank, unlike the Spirit Group, will throw tens of millions at a free agent or two and push them a bit farther than we expect.

Green Bay has proven itself throughout. Rooting for then come SB Sunday. We Falcon fans had a good run. It’s good to know we have to add a few “pieces” as oppossed to an overhaul for a change. Give Matty Ice a chance. He’s still a baby in this league. Coach Smith is first class. Ownership and Management will do what it takes.

I am afraid that Mr. Blank is mistaken about the “not hurting” off-season marketing….
Unfortunately for him, he is fighting some powerful forces here in Atlanta sports. One, this is a transplant city, where die hard allegiances (at around 285 and in) belong usually to another team. The second is both more powerful and, sadly, more difficult to overcome. And that is the feeling by most Atlanta fans that “Gee, we have seen this before……”
Buying into an Atlanta team is a tough proposition. We are so desperate to love our teams and yet, we never want to completely give ourselves over for fear of, well, exactly what happened to the Falcons. Do 1st seed, division winners with a bye lose, sure they do. But here is the thing with Atlanta sports teams, its not just that they seem to ALWAYS find a way to lose in the biggest situations, but we lose in RECORD SETTING fashion.
It seems whenever we get a national audience looking at our teams, we choke, and we choke in glorious fashion.
Hawks getting absolutely dominated by Magic, Brooks Conrad setting a major league record for errors, and now the Falcons losing worse than any team in their position before. I love our teams, and I so desperately want them to win, but Mr. Blank will have to make some major moves before he gets me to buy in again like I did this year. I have faith in this organization, the owner, manager and coach are all quality guys who inspire confidence, but that lingering question still remains…
Why does this ALWAYS happen to us?

I have to believe had Blank owned the falcons instead of Smith we would not be talking about this team lacking a Super Bowl win. I hope Blank continues to invest some emotional equity into this team; maybe not quite as much as Mr. Jones though.

Gawd Dr Warren, sooo optomistic!!!! way to have a postive outlook, the only curse the Falcons experenced this season, was name Aaron Rodgers and Dree Brees, both QB’s were able to extend the play and may big plays that won thier respectiver games. If the Falcons stop them from making those 3rd down play then they win, those games, of couse the INT by Ryan did not help. I do believe that things are moving in the right direction, yes I’m just as pissed as Mr Blank, I am still in a stuper about the fact that we lost that game the way we did. That said for you to say we are cursed and will never win a superbowl, come on if TB, at one time the worse team in the NFL, and New Orleans a team that until a coupe of years ago had NEVER won a playoff game can win the SB then the Falcons can surely win one and will

Keith, I like your optimism, and you are right about staying positive. I do so in areas of life that matter more. Yet, as an Atlanta die-hard fan since 1967, I’ve probably seen more losing than you. I do hope we win a Super Bowl or NBA championship, but I also think that Cubs-like run of no SB’s or NBA championships for like 90 years would be possible for this city, in the unlikely event the teams didn’t move first or the leagues didn’t fold! Sorry, little brother. I do feel lucky to be from such a nice city like Atlanta, though, if that makes you feel better.

I truly believed we’d see them face-to-face in Dallas this season from about November on. Oh well. Pick up the pieces and move forward. We’ve got the right owner, right braintrust, and most of the right personnel to do it, too. This Falcons team is different from those of the past. We’ll be right back in the mix again next season, and that’s all a fan can ask for.

My season tickets were twenty six dollars when Arthur bought the team in 02. This past year the same seat was ninety nine dollars. Granted the team is better but how many of those new suits am I personally buying with my six tickets?
And I don’t want to hear you have to pay for success. Arthur should spend more time figuring out how to make tickets more affordable then how fast he can get to the sideline in the fourth quarter to get his mug on the television!!!
And we want him to buy the Thrashers???? He couldn’t buy them where would he go in the third period???
I realize I may be in the miniority but I wonder how many people who care so much for him have paid what I have over the years?
But that said….. it was still a great article,Jeff!!!

This one didn’t hurt as much as the loss to Dallas in 1980. Back then I was young and actually thought the Falcons could be the best in the NFL. Now I merely hope they might but I’m never surprised when they fail. Actually, we all kind of expect it-40 years of cartoonish disasters will do that to you.

I’m glad to hear he AB is pissed about it. I can’t ever rememeber thinking one of the Atlanta sports franchise owners cared as much, or more, than the fan base. That alone gives me hope that the Falcons may someday overcome their past.

Where are the answers? Blank is missing the point again. Until he reaches the conclusion about not stealing marketing phrases from other teams. All I have wanted from Arthur Blank was competence and honesty as the steward of the franchise. Owner is a overused term. He is renting the right to run an NFL entity. Does he do a good job of it? It’s 50/50. The bar is so low in Atlanta that people fawn over him. I was once guilty of it. I’ve said it before, this team had deep flaws. Don’t blow smoke up my behind, it makes people overly optimistic instead of realistic.

I’m expecting a lockout, so I’m not worrying much about the team in terms of the roster. My long term outlook is more towards what the labor situation and financial outlook will be… Moreover, I want Blank to speak candidly on the issue of the proposed stadium… Not to politicians, not through the mouthpiece of Rich McKay; but directly to the fans, and especially the taxpayers of the region. In the foreseeable future, this economic reality deserve nothing less…

Well be ok we have built a team sort of like New England one that will be good for a while! Blank need not worry this is the Average Football League. You can win a title and not be so good the next year and you could be on the bottom and contend the next. The teams are so close in talent because of free agency and the salary cap. If someone gets hot they win it all or get real close just look at the Cardinals 2 years ago one play from winning it all and look at Seattle this year. Yeah its the AFL (Average Football League) no great teams anymore!

If you are persistent and focused, time is on your side. The Falcons have the most unified professional sports organization in Atlanta. While we’re lamenting strange Atlanta playoff situations. Remember that the Braves, Western Division winners in 1969, ran into the “Miracle Mets” and fell short of the Series. In 1982, against the Cardinals, Phil Niekro had a 1-run lead and a shutout in the fourth inning when the game was rained out (Yes, playoff games could actually be rained out in those days) and he never got a chance in a best-of-five series to pitch again.

Great blog Jeff. I like that the owner has a little ‘fan’ in him. That loss was tough to bear. There is going to be some changes to the squad and a tweak to the coaching staff. The goal has to be not to waste Tony G’s last season in the NFL. We have to win a playoff game at least and the Super Bowl at most.

Tonight, I do some TV scouting looking for Super Quick WRs, a Sackmaster, and a burner at RB at the Senior Bowl.

You can not win consistently with just get by drafts. At some point you have got to quit passingby those high draft picks and settling for the maybes. There always great players available at the lower rounds-not many, but a few. The exceptions to the general rule. You can not continue to be satisfied with the average receiver. When you pass up a good D-1 player you are just fooling your self that you will find a great one later. The higher rated player is so rated for a reason-because he is considered better than a lot of the others. Not always true, but generally right on the nose. Passing up Clay Matthews was a great big error and only serves to question the so called knowledge of the falcon staff. The average fan knows who to pick on the first round. You win with defense first and then offense as a general rule. You can not always depend on your offense to score 30-40 points if your defense can’t stop the other team. The twenty-one points scored against Green Bay should have been enough to have keep it close. Stay close and you always have a chance to win at the end. The main offensive weapon in football is a great defense. You have got to stop the other team at some point in order to score more points than they score. Bad defense and over matched players results and early exit in the playoffs. GET THE “D”

Blank Has Bigger Issues Than Personnel

January 29th, 2011
1:16 pm

Jeff I’m so glad you wrote this article-

This is one of the major problems with Blank and the Falcon’s organization. We are too busy trying to emulate the Patriots. We ARE not the Patriots!!! Mr. Blank needs to get that through his head. He own the Falcons, so it would behoove him to create his team’s own identity. He’s way too concern with image. I understand that every owner want upstanding men as part of their organization but that’s not going to always be the case. Again, what may work for the NE may not work for some other organizations. If the Krafts were such experts in developing winning organization, then why haven’t any of the alumni (coaches/director of college scouts) gone on to successful careers outside of NE. I knew he was letting the Krafts dictate how he ran his organization.

Granted, the Patriots can afford to pick and chose players based on their boy scout images…they have the winning pedigreed to do so. We are the Falcons and have won jack.

I truly appreciate Blank’s desire to win, but he needs to lose a couple of pieces currently surrounding him, starting with Thomas Dimitroff- This GM is way in over his head. Just look at the pieces he has brought into the organization. We are no further along than 2008. Here’s why

We still need a DE to compliment Abraham or maybe two to replace him in the coming year ,

Cornerback (Overpaid for Duanta Robinson)

DL (Jerry Peria was hurt during his senior year in college…why TD signed him anyway is beyond me)

Change of Pace RB (should’ve signed onewhen Norwood went down in Sept

Great Slot/Slant Receiver (Matt Ryan does not have arm strength to consistently stretch the field)

LT (Baker is a bust!) Look at the picks we gave up for this guy.

Bottom line- I don’t think TD has a keen eye for talent, at least not based on his last 3 drafts. Blank problem is deeper than player roster. Its the people in-charge of identifying the correct player roster.

I’m glad it still stings Mr. Blank, as the loss still hurts me, along with other TRUE Falcon fans. GB is the hottest team in the league right now, and Atlanta just happened to stand in their way. The final score (and ATL’s defense) wasn’t pretty, but I like the Blank-Dimitroff-Smith era thus far. Winning the NFC South this year is a great accomplishment, especially when you win the division with THREE teams with double digit wins.

The Falcons aren’t going to go away (hopefully) next year, as I hope we see Arthur Blank proudly hold up the Vince Lombardi trophy after Coach Smith leads the Falcons to a Super Bowl XLVI victory next year.

You have to love that Blank is so emotional about the team, while allowing football men, ah-la Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff to do their jobs. His feelings tell you that he won’t stop until he builds a Champion. He has already built a winner. For Falcon fans who have been critical of the quick exit for the team; think of this. The Falcons lost 4 games all season to 2 playoff teams and 2 teams who are playing for the ultimate prize. The Falcons have also had three winning seasons in a row. Not bad. Also, the comparisons of Matt Ryan’s experience to that of Aaron Rodgers is woefully ridiculous. Let us remember, Rodgers has been in the league for 6 years and learned from one of the all-time great quarterbacks. Matt Ryan has had to blaze his own path. I like where this franchise is…and I like where I think they will end up.

l
More importantly, I’m still upset that TD never delivered on his promise made in 2008 (after the playoff loss in Arizona) that the team would replace our released veterans (Brooking/Malloy) with defensive play-makers. The only players that have half-way lived up to TD hype is M.Peterson and D Robinson. Yet here we are 3 years later complaining about the same issues. So its not like he didn’t know we had issues on the Defense, he just can’t seem to fill the spots with the right personnel.

This franchise was sunk when Mike Vick spent a summer with mirrors in water bottles and [insert heinous act here]. We were hopeless.

Dmitroff and Smith came in here and completely changed the direction of the organization. From the win-loss records to the fact that we’ve got 9 Pro Bowlers playing tomorrow, this is an entirely different organization than it was just a few years ago, and a lot of our talent has their best years ahead of them rather than behind.

Guys like Grimes, Biermann, Decoud, Snelling, and Weems have been integral to this franchise, and all of them were, to some level or another, Dmitroff finds. We’ve done a great job with this roster.

Benjamin- I respectfully disagree- My problem is not whether we have descent young men walking around in a Falcon uniform, its us not having play-makers on the team to get us to the next level. If you think that the men you mentioned above are true play-makers (except Weems) then I will discontinue the conversation because we’re definitely not on the same page. I could care less about a 13-3 record when we play like we did on 1/15/11.

yes- we have several pro-bowlers on the team, but can you honestly say that if that the pro-bowl selections were made after the playoffs that Ryan and Grimes would be on the roster…I think not!

The Falcons will be lucky to get a national game outside of one Monday night game against the Saints – which no doubt will be in New Orleans to assure a sold out crowd for 4 quarters. This team folded like a cheap tent on national TV, and solidified a whole lotta minds across the nation that thought “The Falcons? They still here?”

Michael Turner – Free agent pickup

Brent Grimes – leads team in int’s last 2 years

Tony G. – picked up for a second round pick

Bottom line- After a 13-3 season-we looked no better than the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs. Heck they weren’t even playing .500 during the regular season and managed to beat the Saints who we lost to only two weeks prior.

Only fans/organizations with a loser mentality settles for regular season wins( only to get embarrassed during the playoffs).

I think the falcons will try to sign a CB in free agency, and then draft a DE, 2 wr’s, and a running back. The Falcons will never win without Mike Vick as their starting quarterback. Vick dominated the league this year as a starter for the Philadelphia Eagles. If Vick was still our quarterback, Vick would have given us a superbowl Vick-tory this season, had he been re-acquired by the Falcons in return for the weak-armed, overrated and completely “clueless” Matty “Choke” Ryan. Vick now is the best quarterback in the league once again, ahead of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Brett Farve, Phillip Rivers and Drew Brees. Dimitroff was not hired until January 13, 2008… Snelling was drafted on 04-29-2007. Weems debuted off the practice squad in the last game of failed 2007season against the Seahawks. Grimes was signed on May 16, 2006… He spent the year between practice squad and being released. They resigned him and sent him to NFL Europe. After the 2007 Training camp he was put on the 53 man roster and activated late in the season has been with the Falcons ever since…

Gotta have a system, and players , and we don’t have either. ABE is it, Grimes is a slot back defender, he can not stand up to the opposition receivers. I love his effort, but we need 2 corners, another end(darn, Peppers would have been great, think I mentioned it), 2 linebackers(Lofton, good). Interior de-line is ok. Let’s not forget another wide receiver, to take pressure off of White.

Another thing that annoys me about the F/O- what is up with TD excuse of remaining “fiscal responsible”? Do GMs get graded by the NFL based on how much they remain under the salary cap? Is he running the government or the Falcons? I thought that as long as you stay under the salary cap the team was in good shape.

Also, I can’t stand after a bad season the F/O uses the excuse “we’re still young and/or in rebuilding mode”. What is that all about?

Rebuilding should never be used an excuse for losing in the NFL considering there is so much parity amongst the teams . If the Aints can win a SB, then anybody can do it. Seriously!

Jeff- When I looked back on our last 3 drafts (only considering the 1st 3 rds because the remaining rounds are typically gambles picks) we had 6 picks in 2008, 3 picks in 2009 and 3 in 2010. That’s 12 selections through 1st three rounds. Based on your assessment, only 33% of the players (including Ryan) have panned out or potential playmakers. And we still don’t know if Ryan will turn out to be the franchise QB we all expected him to be. Many fault MM, but I’m so sure.

I digress-

If what you re saying is true and we’re currently in a better position than 2008, then why are we still looking for play-makers (aka starters) to add to the roster,in at least 4 to 5 positions, as oppose to just tweaking it (adding roster depth)?

Arthur Blank is trying to win. Stop. That statement, alone, is applause-worthy in this town. I do think the Falcons will still be on the NATIONAL radar for next season. They might not be the # 1 seed next year, but do they need to be, so long as they have corrected what went wrong vs. the Packers? I say, the answer is “no.” I don’t care if the Falcons go in as NFC South Champs for a second-straight year or if they go in as a wildcard. The point is … that they correct what went wrong. Arthur Blank will address WHAT WENT WRONG and make sure that his staff CORRECTS it. Those are the HALLMARKS of an owner … who CARES.

I don’t even know who owns the Braves these days. Look at what the Phillies did in the offseason. Has Atlanta responded in kind? Heck no. I think their plan is to ’sneak in’ as a wildcard. Gee, great.

Okay, that brings us to the Atlanta Spirit, LLC, aka “The Heptacluster.” Perhaps, they’d like the Hawks to win. But that JJ contract will keep them mired in the 2nd round of the playoffs. As for the Thrashers, that team has NEVER had commited ownership. Never. Give that team an owner who CARES, and watch the building get soldout every game. Hockey hasn’t started, and won’t start in Atlanta, until committed ownership is found for that NHL franchise.

Arthur Blank is the owner that i waited my entire life to see own my favorite sports franchise in all of pro sports. He will make sure that this team stays consistent and competitive for years to come. Losing really bothers Mr Blank and thats a good thing Super Bowls come to those who continually strive for greatness. When the Smith family owned the Falcons it wasnt that they didnt want to win necessarily it was that losing didnt bother them and if you dont mind losing there is something seriously wrong with your teams mindset. This group of Falcons are much different than that from Arthur Blank all the way down to the punter.

It is a consolation to know that our owner truly cares about winning as much as the real fans care. Thank you, Mr. Blank.

“JSS my friend, I utterly respect your opinion, but when you are 5th overall, you better have sack impact. I don’t watch Chefs games, but I need more than good situational stats out of that contract $29M guaranteed. What about passing situations?”

People always put the following on the players (the $$ dollar value). When you are a rookie draft pick, that is not on you, it is on the evaluator (the team)…

Glenn Dorsey is not asked to be a pass rusher, he’s a strong side end in their version of the New England 3-4. The strength of the team is in their linebackers. Their lines job is keep linemen off their backers and strong safety. That he has averaged over 50 tackles the last two seasons is very good. Go see how many sacks did Tamba Hali (the SSLB) playing next to Dorsey have. Then, go look at the tackle/sack totals for the templates of the 3-4: Pittsburgh, the Jets, and the Ravens. Their ends don’t have huge sack numbers. The best 3-4 ever, the 1980-1990’s NY Giants were the same way. I bet you can name the linebackers on that team; but you’ll most likely can’t name the two DEs? And they were top shelf linemen in any era…

I did not want Glenn Dorsey, but I did not hold his contract against him… He’s a solid NFL linemen playing in the wrong scheme for him to have huge numbers…

Ph please don’t mention Ryan’s rookie contract again… That and the Russell contract are the prime reason that the owners opted of the CBA in 2008. Those were just silly amounts of money compared to the previous slotted draft picks…

I was there at the Falcon’s loss to Green Bay. It was miserable for the whole 2nd half. I had to leave early and I never do that. However, all in all, it was a great season and the Falcons games are fun again. I’ve got my season tickets for next year with an upgrade on the seats. A lot of things had to go right to earn the 13 – 3 record and I know that will be hard to repeat. However, I now have faith in this organization that they will continue to make the right moves.

Glad to hear that he is still stewing. We all are. He is the ideal owner for a franchise. You want someone that really really wants to win and knows enough to get out of the way of the GM and Coach. Falcons will learn from this loss. The irony is that losing to GB may give us a better chance of winning this darn thing in the future. If we had cake walked into the Super Bowl and then lost I don’t think the brass would realize what holes there are on this team. Now we know. Whether or not we can win a Super Bowl no one knows, but at least we have the right 3 people trying to figure it out.

I hope one of the therapy dinner points was unimaginative Coordinator coaching, in particular not adjusting during halftime. There are some middleschoolers who could have “played” DC better in plugging holes. Gregg Easterbrook TMQ ESPN had two long discussions on the playcalling that was fed into Ryan which was completely wrong to what he was seeing. (I still have a problem that there was a huge doughnut zone of penetration in the center of our defense looking like dessert to Rodgers and his receivers. There was no seeming re-calibration during halftime. I think the offense came out to play — and perhaps could have compensated — but BVG hadn’t at least narrowed the zone AR said — direct quote — he was playing in.) I think TD and Smitty are doing a great job. They took us from 0-60 in one year, and we are no longer an embarrassment (except in single games to GB and the Eagles this year.) Let’s go with what works, but I have now serious question marks in my head on DC, OC & Baker. I’ve never watched a Pro Bowl game, but I’m going to turn it on tomorrow. Perhaps that is an indicator of a franchise on the rise.

Morris and Harris were the QBs this year. How could Hankerson have a “monster year?” His hands are much better after his workouts with Duper, he has a devastating straight arm and can get yards after the catch. He runs very well for his size. I have seen Jenkins since day one and have watched Hankerson at the U. It’s a no brainer to swap these two players. He’s not being asked to be the #1 here. I dismiss the Jenkins Lite tag out of hand. I think he would be a perfect #2 to Roddy White. Jenkins should have been curbed years ago. 72 catches for 1156 on this year’s UM team is not crap. 17.8 and 16.1 are his yards per catch the last 2 years. Jenkins and Finneran are possession guys except Jenkins can’t catch. Hankerson turns it up field for more yards.

It reminds me of the mistake that people made in not understanding what separated Bolden and Fitzgerald from their stable mate Steve Breaston. I’ll take a human owner who says he’s “pissed” about a bad loss than an unfeeling, uncaring, faceless corporate ownership (like Liberty Media or Time Warner) any day. I believe that while Arthur Blank won’t go all Jerry Jones and dismantle the team without very sufficient reason, he’ll definitely work hard to address the Falcons’ needs so this doesn’t EVER happen again under his ownership. “Relevant” isn’t the ultimate goal; it was a step, and the Falcons have taken it. With Blank as an owner and with this core of personnel, the Birds are poised to go to the next step soon, I believe.

The Falcons are blessed to have an owner like Blank, and despite his frustrations, the fact remains that you need elite players to win championships, and the Falcons have none. Ryan is on his way to being an elite QB, but it wouldn’t be safe to call him elite. (Yet) White, Gonzalez, Robinson, and Turner are solid, but not elite. The OL could use some fine tuning, and seems the secondary always needs help. The Falcons will be a solid team for years to come, but elite? Seems they are an elite player away from competing with the likes of the Steelers and Patriots.

This is a business. I find it amusing how so many goobers on here keep burping out “spend all of the money you can and get everything we want/need?” I’d bet the goobers who keep saying his have little or no money and just love telling those who have it what to do with it!. Hilarious!

As for Blank, he may be wealthy and successful, but he is still learning how to be a CEO…the number one in a company.

His fortune was earned at home depot where he was the CFO, the number two person, behind the leadership, direction, vision and charisma of the number one and CEO, Bernie Marcus. This is common in initial start-ups where other officers and directors get loaded with tons of stock options and every now and then you hit gold and the top executives, like CFO’s, COO’s, etc become incredibly wealthy.

Blank has made the classic mistakes of a number two (something that a number one wouldn’t do):

1. Pushes Michael Vick around in a wheel chair for all to see!
2. Awards Michael Vick the most absurd contract in NFL history despite his known poor work ethic.
3. Hires an immature and unproven Jim Mora as head coach.
4. Hires a well known discontent and “rabbit” in Bobby Petrino to replace Jim Mora…hello?
5. After #2 and #3 above, he actually hires Thomas Dimitroff after a phone interview–not in person!
6. A constant presence on the sidelines–for all to see–of hugging and loving on players and coaches.

Now there is a lot of good about Arthur Blank and no doubt he loves this team, genuinely wants the best, and is driven to win a Super Bowl. However, I think I is about time he follows through with his “I’m pissed” comment by keeping his rear off the sidelines so much, telling TD to act like a professional GM and shave that goofy looking peach fuzz off of his chin and upper lip (he looks like a 15 year old), learn how to wear a suit and tie (he looks ridiculous in the above photo) and basically with all of his words and actions moving forward he lets his coaches and players know “I care about you, but if I ever see a performance like what we all suffered through against Green Bay again everyone in this organization will have to earn their starting roles again…everyone! I’ll give you a hug after we win the Super Bowl!”

Blank is pissed because he knows what the season ticket sales will look like already. He knows that there is no way the league will schedule the Falcons for any national spots except the obligatory game against the Saints, but you can bet it won’t be a home game for the Falcons. Blank knows that trying to peddle the Falcons off as an elite team to the rest of the nation is NOT GONNA HAPPEN after that meltdown against the Packers. The Eagles and Bears didn’t get whupped so bad the game was over by halftime – and neither of those teams was playing after a week off when they played the Packers too. Only the Falcons got shellacked, by 27 points no less. This team is not only incredibly boring, but then went and proved to the entire nation that 13 wins for the Falcons is really the same as about 6 wins for a NFC North or NFC East team.

With this attitude it is you that is the loser…you probably always have been and always will be.

This team, with a 13-3 record, 3 consecutive winning seasons and earning the playoffs in 2 of these 3 season has shed the definition of loser. They now have to take the next step and learn how to win it all, something you never have nor ever will do I’d guess…with that defeatest attitude of yours!

Mike Smith, Thomas Dimitroff, Mattilda Ryan. I think we know which one is the main weak link. Mike Smith and TD are the enablers. Get a QB with a live arm like Rodgers and you could be in the superbowl.

How about trading Matty Nice to the Bengals for Carson Palmer and their #1 pick in the upcoming draft (fourth overall)? I’d like to keep our #1 pick (which is more like an early second round pick) but if we have to use it to close the deal, so be it.

We get in Palmer a QB of with five more years wear and tear than Ryan – plus a gimp knee, but he’s got a stronger arm. And think what Dimitroff could do with that fourth pick – but don’t think about Peria Jerry, think positive.

Ryan is what he is: a franchise QB when it comes to smarts and leadership; and a back up when it comes to accuracy and arm strength. Move him now while somebody is willing to take him and overpay for the privilege. The gild is quickly falling off Matt’s lily, so time’s a-wasting.

I’ve seen enough of Ryan missing wide-open receivers in the end zone to last me a lifetime. This is who he was his last year at BC. This is who he still is. Move him before it’s nobody’s secret.

Terrell Owens was the answer 6 years ago but not now… That is not a disparagement of Owens but simply a matter that he can not get deep as readily as he did 3 years ago… T.O. will be fine, but what you need is to find another Jacoby Ford in the draft. Sorry, it is not Leonard Hankerson. He’s another Steve Breaston. A deep threat clears zones as long they get behind DBs frequently enough and you target them enough to scare the free safety and the corner not to jump a route… Even a blind squirrel can find a nut some time…

The Fates aren’t beholding to the city of Atlanta – and bear us no ill will.

Our city’s championship resume is lacking because we haven’t fielded good enough teams (Falcons and Hawks) or, because when we did, the Braves squandered four of their five opportunities.

We’re very fortunate to have major league sports in this town – and not so lucky when it comes to the quality of the various owners (or the people they hire to hire the coaches, managers and players).

We’ve had one outstanding (not great) owner – Ted Turner. Ted coulda been great, but he never stepped in and forced Bobby Cox outta the dugout. The Braves’ legacy paid dearly for that. And it kept Ted from being ranked with the greats.

We’ve got one good owner – who could move into Ted’s category, and that’s Arthur Blank.

I think Blank’s one of the good guys. He seems to me to possess the traits of an ideal owner: local residency, smarts, passion and deep pockets – just like Turner.

The Falcons are on the right track – we finally broke the consecutive-winning-season draught and we’ve made the playoffs two years out of three. But the Grand Canyon stands between that success and earning the opportunity to play for AND WIN championships. That’s world championships, good buddies – not division championships.

I’m gonna set my expectations for the Falcons independent of the burden of making up for the Braves, Hawks, Flames and Thrashers records of futility. That’s not the Falcons’ fault.

Seems only fair.

I ceratinly hope all these Falcon Fans pay SERIOUS ATTENTION to this yrs free agency AND this yrs draft and hold TD &co. accountable for the players they pick..

Get playmakers and pay them their market value..

I will always be a Falcon fan, win or lose. This loss is almost as tough as the 1978 loss to Dallas. Almost.

The Falcons played ok and Matt Ryan played less than ok. Most of all Green Bay was lights out.

Mr. Blank is a great owner and class man. I wish the Braves had an owner that cared that much. Liberty Mutual probably did not even watch the final loss of the Braves.

The Falcons are missing some key players on offense and defense. Not many though. DB’s and firepower on offense would do the trick. One more pass rusher too. The end from UGA would be a good fit.

It’s all a crap shoot, folks. You play your best. You earn the top seed. Then, CHANGE YOUR GAME PLAN in two weeks, and perhaps every 5 plays — if it is not working — and use a lot of blur/no huddle to keep the D on their heels. With great sorrow, I mention the 9/11 Commissions report headline on this smaller game-based issue. We had a *failure of imagination* in the playoffs, not a failure of commitment by the players. Coaches have to be able to “install” new game plans or ideas because the playoffs are a different breed. My child is known as a divergent thinker in educational terms who asked “why not give MR2 the call,” coaches not on the sidelines could be on call for time management capabilities that seemed to be a problem, and there are drawings on Wikipedia for the sleights PHI used against us. Coaching? That, was the error in this game. I applaud this group of coaches who are better than the Mora years because they wanted to force their Vick into WC offense. However, the playoffs require a higher level of intricacy and intensity particularly on the D. Moral of the story, don’t feed Aaron Rodgers a 20- hole to avoid the explosive play and forget to change up. THAT was what rubbed our noses in the astroturf.

The reason our payroll is so low is this is a young team, however we have a lot of free agents this year, so the payroll will go up, and I believe we will at least try to get CB and DE help this year either through draft or free agency. DE from the giants, maybe draft a corner, that kid from texas perhaps. If TG was retiring, I would go after Zach Miller, but since he is staying, maybe draft a TE in the second round.

Glad to have Mr. Blank as owner vs the Smiths. As a native of Atlanta I have had my share of disappointments surrounding sports in this city. In my humble opinion I believe winning starts at the top. I never hear any owners, coaches, managers etc say the word CHAMPIONSHIP. I would love to hear Blank, Smith or some player at least SAY the words we want to win the SUPERBOWL. Tired of the word process, back to back win season or whatever. Saying it vs doing it are two diffrent things. Its a seemingly small thing but if you say it then eventually you believe it, then you achieve it. So I am saying it “WE WILL WIN A SUPERBOWL” and I believe it!!

I don’t think the team needs a major overhaul. I think the younger Falcons need to get a little older in the form of live snaps on the field in key situations. For people to want to get rid of this person and that person because we lost one playoff game is too impulsive. How quick did people forget that these same players and coaches were responsible for the 13-3 record and division title, and now some of you want them run out of town because of one bad loss? When we beat NO in their house I’m willing to bet that no one had any complaints about the team. Every week there’s a new ‘greatest catch ever’, ‘biggest upset in history’ or ‘best quarterback in the league’. Folks, the last girl that walks by isn’t the prettiest ever, to paraphrase Colin Cowherd. There will be better days for our Falcons and either crowning someone (Green Bay RB James Starks) or running certain people out of town (Chris Owens, Sam Baker, Lawrence Sidbury, Dunta Robinson) because of one game just isn’t logical. Build through the draft, get a free agent piece here and there and let them grow.

And to the person listing himself as “Matt ‘Choke’ Ryan”, you’re entitled to your opinion. However, when Vick was here he didn’t have three consecutive winning seasons like Ryan. He won a grand total of two playoff games in his six years in Atlanta and after he decided that dogfighting was more important than winning a Super Bowl, he went to prison and was unceremoniously removed from the team. Now he’s $20 million in debt and just playing to climb that mountain, instead of being 30, possibly retiring on top like Jim Brown, healthy and enjoying his earnings. Another thing: starting in the Pro Bowl isn’t something to really throw in someone’s face, especially when the team that Vick plays for was eliminated by the same team that beat the Falcons. Vick threw an interception on first down to lose the game for his team. That is choking under pressure if you ask me. Ryan was a helpless bystander as the Falcons defense couldn’t get off the field and allowed 41 of the 48 points.

The biggest difference between the Eagles vs Falcons franchise and management is even in a rebuilding season, the Eagles still won the division.

Just wait for the upcoming season when they go after top free agents to build on the secondary corner alongside Asante Samuel and a defensive end with Trent Cole.

The amazing thing about what Vick accomplished this season was he didn’t even receive the starter reps in training camp and the offensive line was one of the worst in the league and the Eagles were the 2nd youngest teams in the NFL.

2011 is going to be very brutal on their opponents and their annual assault on the Falcants will be even more of a blowout next season :)

Brown did retired on top; but he was far from healthy nor capable of enjoying his earnings. He was grossly underpaid during his career. That in conjunction as well with the pounding he was taking once Blanton Collier took over the Browns in the running game. He averaged 290 carries a year during a 14 game season for 3 straight years…

Mr. Blank been pissed is good but he is wrong to say a review is not necessary. A complete review of the team is required and if Dimitroff and Smitty is telling him otherwise they are wrong and he should ask that this be done. I do not believe a complete overhaul of the team is required but review all aspects of the team. Is the offensive line as good as believed? Is the offensive line too porous to allow Matt Ryan the time to go deep, or is it the inability of the receivers? Can the Oline run block but weak at pass blocking and how can the passblocking be improved, are the personnel in place to achieve this? Are the defensive breakdowns the problem of the defensive line or the defensive backs. The O line and D line must be improved if the team is to be stabilized and be contenders for many years to come.

Matt Ryan: Newest member of the ‘Can’t Win the Big Game’ club?
By MJD

It’s a label that’s unfair and way too easy to apply, but it’s probably going to be stuck to Matt Ryan(notes) anyway: playoff choke artist.

It’s a fact that Ryan didn’t play well Saturday. He made mistakes that buried the Falcons in a hole they couldn’t begin to climb out of. He was intercepted twice in the last 150 seconds of the first half, lost one fumble, and only scratched out 186 passing yards.

It’s also a fact that Ryan didn’t play well two years ago in the playoffs against the Cardinals. In that game, he also threw two interceptions, lost one fumble and came up short of 200 passing yards.

Those are his only two playoff appearances, and both can be fairly classified as failures. In those games, Ryan has thrown three touchdown passes against six turnovers. The same label has been slapped on quarterbacks for less than that.

When Dan Reeves arrived as Falcons coach he had a great opportunity to build something very good, the same as others before and after him, but he did not and the early success of 1998 Superbowl created a false sense of belonging among the elite teams. The poor play of the Oline almost had Chandler killed at times and the teams performance was never consistent even later with Vick scrambling to avoid frequent pressure. Thomas Dimitroff and Smitty have that opportunity now, and they must continue to build on what they have to date. A more reliable Oline and Dline must be paramount for the long term success of the franchise. We cannot be sure how good Matt Ryan can become or if the receivers can get deep if the line is not doing its job on a more consistent basis, neither can the blame be on the OC as was the case this past season. The DB’s need to be upgraded but they also need more help from the Dline especially the pass rush.

Choke, America spoke long before that article. That’s why Vick is the starter for the NFC today and that’s why he got the big suite as a surprise from the league. LOL

KAPOLEI, Hawaii – The NFL surprised Michael Vick with the ultimate perk on Tuesday: the 4,200-square-foot presidential suite at the official hotel of the Pro Bowl. It was a reflection of just how far the player who used to be a pariah has come.
There are 86 players at the coastline resort on the west side of Oahu, the elitist of the NFL’s elite, save for the six Green Bay Packers and four Pittsburgh Steelers who were invited but will be playing in the Super Bowl. As evidenced by his posh digs, Vick is hands down the headliner.

This team was not ready for the NFC Championship and Super Bowl. Period. Get over it, get back to business, and stay focused on developing and improving the team. Fans need to get real; if you expect to win the Super Bowl every year you are setting yourself up for a lot of disappointment. Enjoy, appreciate, and support what we have – a darn good and still promising football team.

Falcons ended the season losing to the NFC Super Bowl team two out of the past three seasons. They earned the number one seed this year. Which was worse, Falcons losing to the Packers in round 2 or the media darling defending champ Saints losing to the Seahawks in round 1? Listening to ESPN you’d think the Dallas Cowboys had a better season than the Falcons (they are “more relevant”, or some such nonsense). Stick a fork in it already. Season’s over for everybody except the Pack and Steelers.

Are you serious? The Saints weren’t at home. The Saints didn’t have a bye. The Saints lost 2 starters on offense the week before and still made it a game.

The Falcons were the #1 seed, (which in hindsight, was as fradulent as a $3 bill), at home, had a bye week and by the time the 3rd quarter started, the game was OVER. The Falcons didn’t even make it interesting. That was the only blowout of the whole playoffs! A 27 point loss AT HOME for the team that had the vaunted 13-3 record. But you think the Saints loss was worse?

DawgDad does have a point. The reigning Super Bowl Champ getting beat in the first round to the “champion” from the weakest division in the NFL is sadder than the Falcons doing what most everyone outside of Atlanta had predicted they would do.

If anything Atlanta got to this point sooner than most everyone predicited they would. It really sucks to have to do so but I can continue to be patient.

Anyone watching the Pro-Bowl tonigh saw on Ryan’s interception that he threw the ball about 54 or 55 yards in the air…from about the NFC 18 to the AFC 28. It was woefully short. Austin (receiver) had the DB beat by about 2-3 steps and if the ball had instead been thrown 60-65 yards in the air (which MANY NFL QBs can do) it is an easy TD. Instead, it turned into a jump ball and an INT.

Guys like Mark Bradley and others who say we need to get more “deep threats” at receiver are delusional. Our QB can’t deliver. Dink and Dunk.

He needs to do whatever he can in the offseason to add 5-10 yards to his deep balls if he can, and add more zip to his outs, slants, etc.

For Lee Sunset and others, I will say this again. The goal in the playoffs is to survive each round, week-to-week. The Falcons earned a bye in round 1/week 1, which is equivalent to a “win” (team advances to the next round). They played in the second round and lost to the team representing the NFC in the playoffs, for the second time in the past three years. What does this prove? The Falcons had a better year than all but two other teams in the NFC.

When a team loses in the NFL it very rarely makes any difference how bad they lose, by 1 point or 27 or whatever. A loss is a loss in the standings or in the playoffs (once in a while regular season points differential actually matters, but it’s rare), and in the playoffs the score differential matters not one whit.

What do we know? The offense needs to become explosive without sacrificing its consistency. The defense needs overall improvement in all areas, pass rush, run stop, coverage. The foundation of a young team is there to build on; the Falcons are in far better shape than most other teams.

ml

January 31st, 2011
2:12 pm

there was not such a difference in talent level between the two teams that could explain the difference in the score. bad coaching was the biggest factor in the loss, especially the lopsided part of the loss. so out manuevered, out schemed and out flanked the names Austerlitz and Gaugamela come to mind. of course our coaching staff has never heard of either. strategy and tactics are very important in a football game, sounds obvious, but that was a completely shameful butt kicking.

and no person who is a true Falcon fan, someone that has been a fan of the team for a long while, not just when they’re winning, but all the time, would ever dare to blame the fans for not wanting to be willing masochists, AGAIN. especially when it’s watching something that happened over and over again in the past. that game was the 49ers all over again. and never has the phrase ‘those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it’ been so true.
the NFL’s who-ya-know, good ol’ boy coaching mill is one stagnant as hell gene pool!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I renewed my season tickets today. I also started my season ticket run in 2002. I think mostly because the owner actually cares as much, if not more, than I do. I also have Braves season tickets and used to have Thrashers. The Braves ownership could care less about it’s fan base, and the Thrashers and Hawks, please.

I did grow up in this city and get tired of everyone always trashing the Atlanta’s fan base, although sometimes deserved for their fairweatherness. However, ownership as a whole in this city has been pretty pitiful with the exceptions of Ted Turner and Arthur Blank. So, I’ll stand with you Arthur, win or lose I’ll be back tailgating in the Gulch next year hoping our offensive coordinator discovers there are pass plays over ten yards in the offseason and hoping our defensive backs can find their playbooks. Either way, I know if it doesn’t work out, you’ll feel just as bad about our inability to win the big one as I do.

“JSS, are you kidding me? Art Modell left a fan base that loved his franchise. You should be ashamed for putting them in the same paragragh.”

As most Browns fans will tell you, Modell was wildly popular with fan base for more than 25 years. Modell did not become public enemy #1 in NW Ohio until the beginning on the 90’s because his greed, personal peccadilloes, and then his temper tantrums as the Indians and Cavaliers finally reemerged from being so bad. When Modell started throwing his weight around tring to get a new stadium even though the Browns and his “Stadium Corp” had been given a sweetheart deal in the early 70’s paying only $1 rent and controlling all revenue. Fans saw what happened when both Jacobs Field and Gund Arena were funded and built using the Gateway Project. Modell refused to participate. Instead he wanted to use his own plan not thinking that Stadium Corp finances would decline. Sound familiar at all to the initial new Falcons stadium talks? The next year Art breached his deal and moved the Browns to Baltimore. Cleveland sued and the next year Gateway project funds were used to demolish old Municipal Stadium and build new Cleveland Browns Stadium.

Art Modell was seen as a owner who cared deeply about his team. He fired Paul Brown (that was not an unpopular move). He won an NFL Title in his 2nd year as a owner. He sat in the same Club seat outside with the fans in the old stadium… Fans fawned over Modell until he stabbed them in the back!

“On you other point, I have no idea what your talking about but thanks for taking the time to bash me.”

You’re welcome, very happy to “bash” you. Because you are like most new Falcons fans (post 1980). Since your season tickets date back to 2002. Is your vision tainted by the Turner and the Smith years? He (Turner) cared deeply, but his Hawks never got past the 2nd round. The Thrashers (he was the original owner), well, they speak for themselves. But I’m happy that seem to finally be on the right track. The Braves were a crap shoot. Anybody who lived here through 75-80 knows it can be much worse. I appreciated the division title run; but in the end they only won it all once! With the Falcons, the city has gotten what it deserved. The team who would become the Kansas City Chiefs wanted to move here. But conservative and status quo Southerners wanted to be part of the NFL, so you got the Smiths!

The person that I was lauding as the best owner is Kathy Betty of the WNBA’s Dream. She bought the adequately run franchise from the 1st year owner and has transformed it into not just a winner on the court (they’ve actually won playoff games); but they also have become leaders and contributors in the community… Even more community involvement than the supposedly great Falcons throw around! Its has caught the attention of the national media too!

Enjoy those tickets…

Thanks for the education JSS. I didn’t say I became a Falcons fan in 2002, I’m pretty sure I stated that was the year I bought into season tickets when the Smith family finally decided to do us all a favor and sell the team. Since you seem interested, I was born here in 1966, the same year the Falcons came to Atlanta so a new fan I’m not.

I agree with many of your points, especially in regard to the Smith’s and if you’d read my first post all the way through I think I addressed my thought on the Hawks and Thrashers. My point on Blank and Turner is that many fans can endure the lean years if they think ownership at least cares. I think you’d agree that can’t be said for Liberty Media or the Spirit experiment.

I’ll take you advice on Kathy Betty and take my daughter to a game or two this season. Sounds fun and you’re right we need to support winners in this city.

Thanks for the civil debate and Go Falcons!

It really does not matter if a owner cares or is absentee. You just don’t want them to be indifferent towards the fans in the long run… Art Rooney was a loser for 30 years. Do you think people would put up with that for even a decade now? The Pirates have been treated as a step child in PGH now. They got a new stadium; but people talk with their dollar. The Penguins were multiple time Stanley Cup winners; but when they were gutted by an indifferent front office; the people of the region (and they are the hockey team Western PA and NE Ohio) talked with their dollar.

People of Atlanta (especially the Northern Suburbs) hate to hear this, but the professional teams in Atlanta are the teams of the region. Not as much any more as it once was since the Carolina and Florida teams came into being… Until people and owners come to grips with that, there will be issues… Build a stadium in the Northern burbs, and I guarantee you that the respective team will turn into the 1970 and 80’s Cleveland Cavaliers (when they played in Richfield), Detroit Lions (Pontiac), or the Buffalo Bills. (Orchard Park). They have loyal fans, but they lost the heart of the region during the lean times…

If Akers make those kicks (which he usually makes) that Vick pass doesn’t happen. We still gave the Pack a better game with a worse defense than the Falcons

You vick lovers who live in Georgia are almost as pathetic as that delusional matt “choke” ryan freak.

Dog killer makes a point of telling the national media he didn’t try that hard to win while with the Falcons and you brain dead morons can’t get off his tip still. That scumbag spit in the face of every Falcon fan.

Obviously anyone on an Atlanta sports blog msg board who still likes vick loves being abused and degraded. Hmmm right back to the simalrities with that sad little goofball matt “choke” ryan.

You must be tired of “stalking 18 year old boys?” Go back over to lusting over Crowell and your illusional “Dream Team!”

Ok,cut it with the rise up saying.Personally i thought it was kind of corney.Until we can get a solid DT,CB a back up solid RB and speedy WR,ill believe. We gotta understand we’re not the only team getting better in the nfc which makes it that much harder.

Its amazing how you can mention vicks name and people instantly retaliate with hatred and negativity. If i was a person from another country that have never heard of vick, after all the bashing i would think he assassinated the last three presidents.I guess when you do something wrong and not the right color you wont be forgiven.

I love our owner. He’s one of the best. I’m glad he feels the way I do. That gives me some peace and hope for the future for some reason.

There are many fans of other teams that would love to have an owner with a similar passion. Obviously, that alone doesn’t make a good owner but it’s a far cry from the Smith days. Take a look at your Bidwell in Arizona (before the sons came to restore semi-order) or your Fords in Detroit or your Browns in Cincinnati and it’s a good starting point.

The team needs to open up the playbook (that might mean two or three less wins, but all you need to do is get to the dance) and that defensive differencemaker (your Matthews, your Polamalu, your Urlacher) and something special could be afoot.
