LIVE BLOG: If Falcons win, it could be Super Bowl dance

Win tonight. Go to the Super Bowl. So sayeth I. (Sorry. I saw, “The King’s Speech” last night and got carried away with the whole English thing.)
Most believe the Falcons and Green Bay are the two best teams in the NFC. They just happened to be meeting in the conference semifinals. I fully expect the winner of this game to beat the winner of Sunday’s Chicago-Seattle semi. So winning today could mean a trip to Dallas.
It has been nearly two weeks since the Falcons last played — a lopsided home win over Carolina. It has been only six days since Green Bay played — last Sunday’s win in Philadelphia in the wild card game. Logic says the Falcons will be rested and the Packers will be beat up. (Remember, this is a team that also had to scramble down the stretch and win its last two regular season games just to make the playoffs.) What we can’t predict is whether the week off will affect the Falcons’ timing, but I doubt it.
Is Green Bay a better team? When healthy and at full strength, probably. But neither of those two are the case right now. The Packers lost running back Ryan Grant in the season opener and generally haven’t been able to run the ball this season, last week’s win over the Eagles notwithstanding (seldom-used rookie James Starks rushed for 123 yards).
The Falcons’ keys are fairly obvious and I touched on a couple of them during the week. But here they are:
– Get running back Michael Turner going. Turner has been good this year but not consistent. Green Bay’s defense this season ranked fifth against the pass but only 18th against the run, and Turner rushed for a 110 yards and a touchdown when the teams met in Nov. If he can duplicate that feat, it helps quarterback Matt Ryan. Which leads to . . .
– As a I wrote earlier in the week, Ryan has shown he can win games in the fourth quarter. But the Falcons are not at their best if they’re a pass-dominated offense. They need balance. Ryan has excelled this season in clutch situations and threw a career-low nine interceptions with a career-high 28 touchdowns. That stems from making good choices. Assuming that continues tonight, the Falcons will be fine.
– Defensive end John Abraham has had one of the best seasons of his career with 13 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception, despite the backdrop of his mother battling lymphoma. The defense needs to get pressure on Rodgers and move him off the spot (to use a football phrase). Abraham is the key to that. He’ll be opposed by Packers left tackle Chad Clifton.

I still remember the playoffs from 2 years ago when the Steelers beat the Cardinals. That year, 3 of the 4 Number 1 seeds went down in their first games. With any luck though the Falcons will be like the Number 1 Seed that didn’t lose (aka the Super Bowl champ Steelers). Though last year both NFC #1 Seeds won … handily
Either way ff there are any timing/layoff issues we should be able to see them on their first possession of the game.

Yep, agree this is for the NFC championship.
My biggest hope is that the Packers offense operates with the illusion that they actually have a running game…e.g, 23 carries and 39 yds for Starks with several 3 & outs in the first half.

You know this whole thing about national respect is getting old. We get so caught up in that we forget how far this team has come in such a short time. Nobody has had a turnaround like this. Half of me is ecstatic the packers are even in this game considering all the injuries and the other half thinks they’re legitimately the best team remaining in the NFC with a good chance to get there. Hey last night I was poking around on the Internets and discovered the following facts.
One – the Falcons-Packers series is tied at 13-13 with 1 postseason win apiece. The average score is Packers 23.6, Falcons 20.3. Each side has one shutout. The first game in 1966 against the best ever Pack was 56-3. The last game was 20-17.
Two – the 8th Wisconsin volunteers were a Civil War regiment that fought mostly in Louisiana and Mississippi. They were with Grant at the surrender of Vicksburg. They had a regimental mascot, a bald eagle called “Old Abe”.

I may be way wrong…. that’s why opinions are so great.
But you cannot convince me for one second that Atlanta will ever be a “NFL city”, when you have the heart of the SEC thumping so loudly. And since every other SEC school has no big, productive city near it, all those grads move here, bringing their pride with them. Then there are always the couple hundred Georgia Tech fans.

I am 47 years old. I have been watching the Falcons since 1976. Barely missed a game. I am so JACKED for this one it is downright silly. I am supposed to be more mature than this.
My wife keeps feeding me, baking things. I think she is trying to make me sleepy so I will quit pacing around our house. I actually mopped the kitchen just to take the edge off.

DA – I’ll give it a shot – I think Atlanta is a great NFL town and the leading college football town. The NFL will never overtake CFB in ATL, but the number of Falcon season ticket holders is comparable to Dawgs season ticket holders without the students. Also, the TV ratings for Falcons games and Dawgs games in the Atlanta market is exactly the same (usually about 400,000 HH for an average game), and both are typically higher than any sunbelt NFL city.
I think you are right that the Falcons fan base is a bit different – usually native Atlantan/north Georgian, a bit rowdier than other ATL fan bases (despite media/talk show portrayals), but I do not think that being an exceptional CFB town prevents ATL from being a great Falcons/NFL town.

PreyDawg, I’m right there with ya. Been watching the Falcons since the 1978 season, when I was 14. I remember that loss to the Cowboys in the 1980 playoffs like it was yesterday. I was utterly heartbroken. Still makes me sad to think about it. I too am getting antsy. I wish game time would hurry and get here. The anticipation is killing me!!!!

Well I was living in St. Louis when the Rams won the Super Bowl and Faulk is golden IMO – a hardnosed and smart football player and I think he’s right – winning will require conquering the emotions of having a big season ride on one game – we (StL) won that Tampa game 11-0 with the best offense ever and were losing the Super Bowl until Warner and Bruce broke it open. I didn’t think he meant any disrespect, he was speaking from experience. If you think ATL is desperate for a championship – try STL – the Cards had never won a playoff game at home in their entire STL history and those people were ALL nervous wrecks

PreyDawg, I think that 47-17 drubbing is why Faulk doesn’t like the Falcons. All the talking heads are so far off base. All season long, they have built up teams like the Packers, the Ravens and the Saints as the “most dangerous team in the NFL” or “hottest team in the NFL” — that is, until the Falcons beat those teams. Then, they’d move on to another “best/latest/hottest” team that was never the Falcons. After we win tonight, we still won’t get respect. The only way that will happen is if we win the Super Bowl and with our luck there will be a strike in the offseason that will take all the attention away from the Falcons as reigning champs . . . Face it, we are the Rodney Dangerfields of the NFL. We’ll have to win 2 or 3 Super Bowls to get any real respect from the national media.

@JMAYNE–It will be the normal home uniforms. The NFL has very specific rules about alternate uniforms. They’re only allowed to wear them twice each season. It won’t be the all blacks because, as of right now, they aren’t in the rotation. The throwbacks took their place.

I have a purchased in 2010 Falcons shirt on today. When we played the Eagles in the NFC championship game a few years back, I wore a t-shirt commemorating the Falcons very first playoff win vs. the Eagles in 1978. Going old school didn’t work that time. I am going to get out the pom poms I got at the playoff game vs. the 49ers in 1998. Man, wish I could be at the game tonight!!! For a while, it was the best and oldest bar in Buckhead. old school pool tables, a boneless, skinless chicken dinner for only $0.30 (that was a hard boiled egg from a large mason jar), fried baloney sandwiches and blackjack dealt at the front counter (I was there one night when ATL vice came in about 10 minutes after a phone call tip came in…) and 7 plays on the jukebox for a dollar
They had a very eclectic selection on the jukebox – country AND western songs – all modern new age stuff from the 50’s, 60’s and some VERY modern songs from the early 70’s as well!
One time I asked ‘ole Gene for a coke. His reply?
“What the hell do you think this is, son? A GD candy store?” (Gene didn’t abbreviate with initials)
Then he handed me my regular – a longneck Bud

That BBQ was awesome as well. Their tagline was “We’re a 1 star restaurant and PROUD of it!” They would actually cut your tie off if you dared to wear one when you came in…
That pool hall had a blackjack machine in the front room. WORST thing that ever happened to me? i won $1200 on that blackjack machine.
Took 3 weeks for me to get paid. I thought I had that machine beat… Gave it all back (and then some) over the next couple of months.

Why all the uncharacteristic stuff, the penalties and the bad decisions? I think part of it is that the defense has been good enough all season to keep the team from ever thinking in desperate terms. The performance of the GB offense made them desperate, and this has happened.

a 9-7 team disguised as a 13-3 “champion”. look at the schedule – a lot of games could have gone either way. its why i couldn’t watch a full game., having lived here since 1960 i can’t believe in the falcons. next year, injuries and conservative coaching will catch up with them, and they will be back to a .500 level team. competitive, but nothing special. This is why I was Pissed when we let the Saints come to the dome and we lost. You have to pick up some momentum going into the playoffs with wins against good teams and NOT count on beating the Panthers. All of the teams in the playoffs will either look like the Saints or better.

GB just exposing this teams weaknesses and the fact that they are just not ready yet. The D was average for the better part of the year. The talent level on D just is not there and everyone knew it at the beginning of the year and it is abundantly clear tonight. That will be the major job for Dimitroff in the draft and free agency. Of course there may be neither w/o a CBA. Ryan showed his lack of experience in this siuation tonight but he will learn, get better and if the team is improved get another shot.

Take note of Dom Capers defense. Great blitz schemes. That’s how you get pressure on the qb. He’s not sitting back in 3 or 4 man lines 90% of the time like we did in the first half and our first game vs. the Packers. He shredded us in the first game passing as well as today. OXFORD, Miss. — If any questions remained about Georgia’s ability to bounce back from a tough loss, they were answered Saturday.
Gerald Robinson scored a season-high 22 points and the 24th-ranked Bulldogs put all five starters in double figures in a 98-76 victory over Mississippi.
Trey Thompkins had 21 points, Travis Leslie added 17, Dustin Ware 15 and Jeremy Price 12 for Georgia (13-3, 2-1 Southeastern Conference), which rebounded quickly from a defeat at Vanderbilt that snapped a nine-game winning streak.
“Our players really responded well,” Georgia coach Mark Fox said. “Of course, you don’t normally shoot 64 percent from the field and make 26 out of 27 free throws every night. But we were happy to get that on the road tonight.”
The Bulldogs shot a season-best 33 of 52 from the floor. They also dominated the boards, 32-21, and committed only seven turnovers to complete a week in which Georgia was ranked for the first time since 2003.
Ware had nine assists, Thompkins blocked three shots and Price pulled down seven rebounds, all game-high performances.
“We’re a balanced offensive club when we are moving the ball well,” Fox said. “Thompkins had those assists early and got everybody involved. Once we started hitting shots, it was contagious.”
Zach Graham led Ole Miss (12-6, 0-3) with 21 points and Reginald Buckner added 11 for the Rebels, who have lost three straight. Leading scorer Chris Warren was limited to nine points on 3-of-12 shooting.
“We have Chris Warren’s name in bold print on every scouting report we have on them,” Fox said. “He is a great player. Being able to slow him down was a big key in keeping them from getting back in the game.”
Georgia never trailed, racing to a 7-0 lead in the opening two minutes and a 26-12 cushion after eight minutes. The Bulldogs opened 12 of 16 from the field, while Ole Miss was 3 of 13 during the same stretch.
Georgia led 53-37 at halftime and continued to pull away. Ole Miss never got closer than 13 points again. The Bulldogs led by as many as 27 on five occasions in the final two minutes.
“I’ll admit it, I never saw that coming,” Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy said. “I thought Georgia put on a clinic. They threw the ball where they wanted. They did anything they wanted.”
Ole Miss finished 26 of 54 from the field (48 percent) and 19 of 28 at the free throw line. The 98 points allowed by the Rebels were the most in Kennedy’s five-year tenure.
“We caught Ole Miss at a good time, but they’re a solid team,” Fox said. “I’m pleased with how we’ve dealt with adversity this week. We’ve had bad weather here and spent a lot of time on buses between Nashville and Oxford. I’m proud of what these players got done today.”

What in the heck is going on, play by play called this a clinic by GB. Who is evaluating talent, he is fired, players on this team won’t start on others, much less make squad. Why is Peterson still playing, his familarity with Smith. He is at best a 2 down backer. Anderson, why is he still in ATL? These will be the questions asked in the off season starting in 17:41 minutes, minus TV timeouts. I knew when I was at the NO game, we were not going to the big game.

Really, anyone who has followed Aaron Rodgers is not surprised. I am a Ryan fan but he has half the experience of Rodgers who is a machine. The only chance you have is for Rodgers to have receivers drop balls. He gets on them, and the mood changes when he does. But they are clearly the top team in the nfc. Rodgers missing the two games is the only reason they had 6 losses.

I am disgusted! This is not a professional defensive team…..they are getting blistered! Enough talk about how they don’t allow points or how they win the take away battle. Our defense sucks and it’s a LONG way from getting fixed! Even against an offense as good as the Packers, they should be able to at least get a stop at SOME point if they are playing at a professional level…..unless they just absolutely SUCK! Might I suggest firing Brian Van Gorder first thing? There is obviously some talent on the Falcons defense…..seems like there’s a huge coaching issue to me.

Matt Ryan will never take us to a superbowl you can bet on it. He hesitates on passes all the time and takes a lot of sacks due to it. He throws a million check downs or either we are just very conservative example before half time with 37 seconds we throw a 1 yard pass to the back second down two yard pass to the back then we throw it down field hoping for a pass interference. He hardly ever throws the ball in the middle of the field for 15-20 yard gains. Watch they are always on the sideline with single coverage and we are hoping to get pass interference. He does not have confidence in his arm. He cost us a touchdown when Jenkins slip in the endzone as soon as Jenkins was open he should have put it on a rope to him then Jenkins would not of had to slam on brakes and have to out jump someone. He is not that good. WE ARE A AVERAGE TEAM THAT HAD EVERYTHING GO THEIR WAY. I have always thought this about Matt Ryan not just tonight. He has to improve on his decision making and has to grow some balls

Smyrnoff…it is nothing about experience, Ryan and Rodgers. It is talent, pure and simple. Ryan is not inexperienced. Five years in a pro style offfense in college. Three year starter in the NFL. Ryan is plenty experienced. Problem is, he shows up to a gun fight with a noodle.

I was mistaken. It’s over. Atlanta’s defense has been its weakness all year, except for a few games. It failed early, and completely gave up. Green Bay is obviously the better team. Patriots, watch out! There will be a new Falcons defense next year.

There really are no words for this catastrophe. You have to fire people for this. It’s worse than the Broncos losing the Super Bowl 52-10 to the 49ers. Every last aspect of the game plan, the performance, everything has been awful. I know we are short on depth but this is just incomprehensible. This sort of thing can wreck a team for years. It’s just amazing, astounding, shocking. I’ve seen Falcon football for nearly 40 years and I just can’t comprehend how a team with so many advantages can lose like this.

I’ve been watching the Falcons for more than forty years during which they have consistently been one of the worst teams in the NFL. Still, I have never witnessed such a total collapse in every facet of the game as they’ve suffered in this debacle.
Earlier I stated that this is 1980 all over. I was very wrong. The 1980 team was in the game until the very end.
I don’t think that the Falcons will sell out a single game next year.
