A.J. Green could be Georgia's second No. 1 overall NFL draft pick in the last three years, joining Matthew Stanford.
With Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck announcing that he’s returning to school for another season, there’s only one question: Does A.J. Green send him a thank you note?
If Green says he’s coming back to Georgia, it would be even more stunning than Luck’s decision. I follow this general rule: When a college player sells his Independence Bowl jersey for $1,000, he’s ready to make money.
By Luck staying in school, Green could be the first overall pick. That would give Georgia two first overall selections in the last three years (Matthew Stafford went No. 1 to Detroit in 2008.) It would be a nice honor for the school but there also could be a sense of, “Why didn’t we do more with them?”
Green is considered a lock top-five selection. ESPN’s Mel Kiper ranked Green as the fourth best prospect on his current “Big Board” (requires Insider subscription), behind Luck, Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers and Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley.
With no other quarterback worthy of being drafted first overall, there’s no obvious No. 1 pick. But several mock drafts already have Green slotted in the No. 1 spot and going to the Carolina Panthers. Excerpts from a couple of them:
– The Orlando Sentinel: “Carolina has got to be upset that Andrew Luck, who was a lock here, is returning to Stanford. They could go with a defensive lineman here, but they are hurting bad at wide receiver and may take Green as an athletic, flashy pick to try and help Jimmy Clausen and pacify a restless fan base.”
– NFL Fanhouse: “So Andrew Luck won’t be the QB in Carolina next season. It’s a bad development for the Panthers, obviously, but what can you do? In this case, Carolina will either ride Jimmy Clausen or add a veteran QB (Vince Young? Donovan McNabb?) — either way, the Panthers need to give that quarterback some weapons. Green is an absolute stud.
Based on recent first overall picks and inflation, Luck left potentially $55 million of guaranteed salary on the table (pending changes in the next CBA that could cap rookie salaries). Two years ago, Stafford signed a contract worth up to $78 million, with $41.7 million guaranteed.
Maybe he and Green can build a library on campus or something.

When has a receiver been the first overall pick in the draft? It won’t happen…WR’s are rarely, if ever, impact players in their first year or two….and AJ is not a better WR than Calvin Johnson…..So no…it will not happen.
Nick Fairley might be the first player taken…If I had the first pick,,,,I am taking Cam…..and I know that for the next 10 years I have a player fans will want to see, and will pay dividends…He just needs a little time learning the systems…No way is he a bust like J Russell….

It truly is sad to think the greatest receiver we’ve ever seen was on a team that went 8-5 and 6-7. I thought we underacheived with Staff and Moreno but wow. This takes the cake. I still get ticked when I see replays of his catch against Colorado, knowing we ended up losing that game.

Technically every player drafted should send Luck a thank you note because they all move up a spot. So probably it’s the last guy drafted that most owes Luck a debt of thanks.
As far as Green’s future goes, it may be beneficial not to go first, and rather go to Denver with the second pick, I think Tebow is less of a question mark than Clausen.

GSU Eagle, no dis-respect intended, but the pro’s look at a quarterbacks potential totally different than a college. Tebow is a perfect example. Green is a great player, but I’m not sure a team with as many needs as the Panthers will be willing to take a wide receiver #1 overall.
Then again, a guy as good as Green could make Clausen a better player.
If I were a betting man, I’d guess they grab an offensive or defensive lineman while desperately trying to trade down.
I guess Cam Newton is another choice, but I am not sure how he is being evaluated at the NFL level.

Between now and the draft there will be about 5 guys who no one is very familiar with right now who will shoot up the draft boards due to insane workouts and/or good interviews.
Conversely, at least 2 or 3 guys will fall way down.
I predict that Green will remain about where he is and be selected somewhere in the top 5 or 10.
The only problem with taking a receiver so high is that without a good QB to get him the ball it’s kind of a silly pick.

This team needs some quality depth at alot of positions and since the player they wanted isn’t going to be there, just trade down and get more players. You can still sign a Vet QB for the short term until you get the young QB you need to develop.

Bowers from Clemson will be number one pick. Why even write this article?…he’s number 5 on McShay’s big board and he’s only been wrong about one thing that I can remember and that’s Tim Tebow. He hated Tim Tebow from the beginning anyways. Panthers need to get better on defense first. They are close on defense. If they can retain Steve Smith and Deangelo Williams…they have some really nice pieces on offense. Gettis and LaFell are good young receivers and Goodson is a vert good young RB. They need a Defensive end because they will probably lose Charles Johnson and his career high 9 sacks to someone who will over-pay him. If the Panthers want Green…they will trade out of the number one pick down to someone who has multiple picks to give.
Cheers

You don’t draft a wide receiver #1 overall when you have significant QB issues. Carolina will try to trade down, hopefully for a veteran QB. If they can’t then they will take Fairley or Bowers and try to pick up a veteran QB on the market. Either way Clausen is not going to be their QB of the future. The guy is not very good. Instead they took JaMarcus Russell. … And while AJ may not be better than Calvin, 2 points: 1) They’re pretty close — AJ might be a better route runner; 2) It’s a different draft so you need to weigh AJ against other players in draft, not against Calvin.

Cam is unique because he can throw the ball well, unless many so-called spread QB’s in college…He is also faster than any player an opposing defense will send after him ( except a CB or safety, who cannot bring him down) and his size keeps most defensive players from tackling him as we saw this season. AJ is a good talent but he is too prone to injuries at this stage to last long in the NFL – if he stayed another year and bulked up he would be better off – the money would still be there and his chances of surviving for more than a year before he got torn in half by a 230 pound NFL LB would be better. But we all know money trumps just about everything in our society – he’s gone unless he’s made of more character than he has shone so far. The bottom line is – he was not a real game breaker for us / Tebow was a game breaker – compared to him AJ is small fry. – AJ was a weapon, that like so many others, never fully blossemed at UGA. Good luck to him either way – I think he’s a good kid.

By the way, the last 8 #1 overalls that were QB…Stafford, J. Russell, A. Smith, Eli Manning, C. Palmer, D. Carr, M. Vick & Tim Couch. Why write for a local sports outlet if you have a vendetta seemingly against every local team. Nobody wants to come on here and read the cheap shots you take constantly about the teams we are so emotionally and financially invested in.
Go write for a National outlet if you want to constantly antagonize people. Or better yet, go write for The Onion, where your stories(sic) would have a much better fit.

Jeff didn’t imply you worked at Wendy’s because you are a UGA fan. He did so because of your crappy attitude and sense of entitlement, which is not conducive to a real job. It is very apparent you have no actual success in your life because of your need to tear down others, and that does not just happen towards Jeff Schultz as we all know by being subjected to your comments day in and day out.
Jeff writes the stories as they come to him. Sometimes they are negative. Do you really think he should write glowing articles in favor of UGA after a 6-7 season? He also writes some negative stuff about Tech, of which I am a fan. Sometimes I don’t like it, but at least it’s honest.
If you want someone to always report favorably about your favorite team, read the Athens paper. Or better yet, take some initiative and start your own paper/blog site and spin every negative thing the team does into a puff piece that would make Obama’s PR staff blush with envy.
Quit being such a drain and make something of yourself.

I’m sorry but AJ Green aint gonna be the #1 pick in the draft. NFL teams do not like to tie up that much guaranteed money on a position that is given to being a diva. Calvin Johnson was a better talent than Green and topped out at the #2 pick. And Calvin Johnson was a coach’s dream because of his work ethic and attitude on top of his enormous talent. Green has shown immaturity and lack of discipline with his suspension this season. And despite how talented Calvin was, he did not elevate the Detroit Lions the way you expect a #2 pick to do. A team without an established QB is not going to spend $40 million guaranteed on a WR with character concerns.

What is it Schultsie did you pass out on some Georgia coed one time and awoke to find a present left on your chest? Do people like me that see you for what you are – I mean if Paul Johnson were to have two or three losing seasons in a row you guys would still be hailing him as some kind of effin genius, pi$$ you off?
Just when we need to have one of our ‘players’ show a little loyalty – like a Tebow or a Luck – and return for another, and final, year in order to accomplish something, even if it’s only to prove that this past year was a fluke, you invoke the ‘Mel Kiper’ crap about A.J. being in the top three or four, and now, possibly No 1. What does Kiper know anyway, other than a guy with a 60’s-style hair-cut and a smart-a$$ed attitude?
Give A.J. some credit. At least speculate that he might want to show that he really did, and does, care about some sort of legacy at Georgia, and come back to show just how good he really is…besides he could use the extra strength and conditioning (like put on some muscle) before he moves ‘to the next level’.

He’ll go in the first 10 picks, But number one, 70 mil after a hit and miss career at UGA. Don’t think so. He’ll be rich. You never can tell how an amateur athelete will do once he becomes a professional. This applies in any sport. Baseball is probably the biggest crap shoot just because of the years spent in the minors and constantly having to adjust to the next level of competition. The draft is always a crapshoot.
I will say that Carson Palmer’s career wasn’t a complete waste. He has played for probably the most disfunctional franchise in the NFL while he’s been there. Stafford has the potential to be a good one, if he cans stay healthy.

Posey had the better year, obviously, but Heyward did finish second in the rookie of the year ballot. I can think of plenty of players who were thought to be awesome and flopped but I can think of players who were picked to be great and did.

I think Mr. Luck really sets a good example for all of these money hungry yahoos that play the sport today. I guess one would have to be FROM money to be able to experience it though. He’ll take out an insurance policy like they all do, so he’s not really losing anything anyway. What are the chances he gets hurt so bad he can never play again??? Slim to none, those are the chances. He’s not an idiot, he just has his priorities right. His parents obviously did a better job of raising him than some of the other players leaving THEIR teams early and going into the draft simply so they can make money.
These guys will never get the opportunity to go back and play for a National Title again. That’s something you can’t take away for as long as they live. Kudos to Andrew and his family for seeing the big picture. I wish more players would do.
On top of all of that, it screws everyone up involved with the NFL draft and gives these writers one more topic to write about. Good for everyone, except the Carolina Panthers I guess.

eric crouch was a #1 pick so he is a good pick on your bust list. But three of those qb’s were/are not busts. Carson Palmer has done well and when not throwing to Me First type players has the ability to really air it out, Vinny Testaverde was a good QB and started for over a decade successfully in the NFL, and Matt Stafford has a shot if he stays healty from what I have seen. Even though these three have no rings to show for it, these three were/can be good QBs. The others on your list I agree with; don’t forget that guy out of Washington State that was a big #1 bust. lol

I’ve been saying since the beginning of the season AJ would stay-and I’m still standing by it. Look at the facts: (a) coming out of high school, he committed to the Bulldogs when he was sophomore (sounds like he truly wanted to be a great one), (b) he says his Mom wants him to get a college degree despite all the talent (and you know that boy listens to his Momma), (c) there’s a potential NFL lockout coming up next season-can’t make money if you can’t play, and (d) after his suspension he said he wanted to “Make it up to the fans”. AJ would be smart to stay one more year and let this whole thing with the NFL/NFLPA blow over. He can only improve his stock with Murray coming back (hell, Murray’s said he would hit AJ with 20 TD’s potentially if he came back next year-that’s a bold statement that shows determination/motivation on a leader’s part.
That said, with Luck being out now, I would think Carolina would be wise to take a D tackle to compliment Charles Johnson (a UGA player btw) on the line. They don’t need Bowers because they have Johnson. Nick Fairly is and will be a beast blowing up O-Lines at the next level once he grows just a little more-kinda like Johnson himself. That or a high-profile corner and maybe Will Hill or Ahmad Black in the later rounds.
Lastly, McShay and Kiper (guido) are both talking head toolbags (I mean, they do work for ESPN). Don’t listen to them!!

Jeff,
First of All AJ Green (to my knowledge tried to sell his jersey last summer timeframe, so don’t know why you stated Independence Bowl Jersey) unless he was dumb enough to do it more recently while he has still NCAA eligible to play at UGA.
Secondly, it’s pathetic for UGA to hang their hat on the notion that they would have 2 # 1 draft picks in 3 years with Stafford & AJ Green.
This would be akin to Auburn continuing to ride on the coat tails of #24 Carnell (Cadillac Williams) & #23 Ronnie Brown being the #1 & 2 NFL draft picks in 2005 NFL draft after Auburn went undefeated in 2004 and beat VT in the Sugar Bowl and were locked out of the Nat’l Championship game…
Anyway, UGA has had a nice run along with Auburn University and the entire SEC for having the most players in the NFL draft overall for a long time… I’d love to see that stats compared to other conferences as I am sure SEC blows them away for the# of players that play on Sunday…

If Oregon beats Auburn I will congratulate Oregon on a great win over a great SEC team. But, I don’t think Oregon can beat Auburn.
Oregon beat one good team this year that had a big bowl win over a team that lost to James Madison. Also, the ACC is a crappy football conference. VT has won how many BCS games? ZERO
Oregon has played more teams with losing records than they have with winning records.
Cal held Oregon to 15 points. Cal didn’t have a winning record.
Auburn beat the defending national champions in their own stadium in front of 100,000 Bama fans.
Auburn scored more points in the SEC Championship game than ANY other SEC school in history.

SEC CHAMP, you prove that you have no idea how the Pac-10’s round-robin schedule works. Cal, for example, had a losing record because they lost to Nevada, and had to play every other team in the Pac-10. Cal then went on to lose 6 games in the conference, to Arizona, Southern Cal, Oregon State, Oregon, Stanford, and Washington. Oh, and before conference play, Cal beat Colorado 52-7. “Cal then went on to lose 6 games in the conference, to Arizona, Southern Cal, Oregon State, Oregon, Stanford, and Washington.”
So they basically played two ranked teams.
“Cal beat Colorado 52-7.”
Where is Colorado ranked?
“That same Colorado team beat up on UGA.”
Yeah, Auburn beat up on UGA.

NO HE COULD NOT.
Carolina has way too many needs on both sides of the ball to draft him #1. No one is going to pay #1 overall money to a WR any more (so that rules out the “trade up to get him” crap.) Carolina would do better to draft Bowers, Fairley, Dareus, or Peterson, or trade down and wait for Mallett (or, laugh, Locker.) Carolina desperately needs to replace Julius Peppers’ production on defense.
I defy you to find a team that’s made solid strides forward who made a point of drafting early-first round WRs. The Cardinals may have been the exception with Fitzgerald a couple years ago, but I doubt anyone would support that now, considering they didn’t even have to go .500 to make the playoffs and failed. The Lions are probably the next best counterexample, and it took Stafford and Suh to make Megatron look like a worthwhile pick.

AJ will not need a degree to “fall back on” if he is the top 5 pick that everyone expects. He will have millions of dollars to fall back on. All of this romance about coming back for a degree and your teammates is very heartwarming and would make for an excellent Lifetime movie, but in the real world people get up every morning so that they can earn money. Once again, you don’t understand how a round-robin schedule can kill off teams that might have marginally been bowl-eligible.
Look at Sagarin’s schedule rankings: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbt10.htm
Auburn is 15th, Oregon is 19th. Both are right there with one another. The toughest in the country was Oregon State, 2nd was Washington, followed by Washington State, and 4th was UCLA. And you wonder why these teams didn’t win a bunch of games? Because their out-of-conference schedule was tough, and then they had to play 9 in-conference games. That is how you end up with a bunch of un-ranked teams at 7-6, 6-6, and 5-7

Jeff, Carolina doesn’t need a receiver. They need someone who can throw the ball. You see, the way it works is–you have to have someone who can throw the ball before someone is able to catch it. If they’re smart they’ll take a QB. Luck’s not the only good college QB. Besides, Green is already acting a little greedy and probably will be acting a little thugish before long.

I’m not sure AJ will be the first pick, because I’m not sure Carolina would draft a WR when they have other needs. But I do think he’s an easy top 5 for sure. I think Stafford and Knowshon left a little early, even though I can’t fault either of them for taking the money. However, I can’t help but feel a little used as a fan when those guys let for the NFL. It just seemed like both of they both kind of held back a little bit in 2008, whereas in 2007 they were balls to the wall. AJ on the other hand gives 100% in every game he plays in regardless of the outcome. I have watched him singlehandily put the offense on his back in games. He’s one of the best WR’s I’ve ever seen. Not only is he ready to play at the next level, but I would actually think less of him if he stayed.

I am sure AJ is gone because that it is the general consensus that you should “take the money” and if you don’t you are a “fool”.. Is that all there is in life….money? Sure it is important but, trust me, as someone who has done well financially while raising 6 kids I see first hand where there are a number of other issues that really determine someones true happiness in life. Personal accomplishments, other than just making money, actually give greater and longer lasting pleasure. Money can come and go easily, but things you have done in the past & relationships you have made cannot be taken away. As much as many of the UGA players would like to make a lot of money they have experienced something I will never get to do…run onto the field at Sanford Stadium with the Georgia “G” on the side of your helmet. How much is that worth?
I applaud Andrew Luck for his decision. Those that say he can “afford” this decision more than someone from a less fortunate childhood are not dealing with reality. My success was shared with my children as long as they were living in my house and under my direction. As soon as they left for college they were “weened” off until graduation when they now must make their own financial success.
AJ can set new records while endearing himself forever to the Bulldog Nation by making the decision to come back next year. Fans love it when players let them know they love the team as much as they do. As I stated in the beginning I doubt seriously that AJ will stay, but if he does he will always be remembered as a damn good dog by the faithful. Either way, I think AJ is a quality person, although I am a bit upset with him for the jersey incident, and I wish him the best.

Rising prices are a consequence of inflation, but not inflation itself. Inflation is defined as an increase in the supply of fiat currency, i.e. the Federal Reserves “quantitative easing” policies. AKA characterized as making further units of “money” out of nothing and thereby “inflating” the money supply.
With each monetary unit now holding less “value” than before, it takes more of these monetary units to buy a particular good – like an NFL QB. Of course other elements such as supply and demand factor into this too, as do artificially low interest rates resulting in excessive lending.

I love how everyone’s attacking SEC fans for having passion for their conference. Truth is, every fan and team in the SEC hates each other in the regular season-no doubt about that. In the bowl games though, we quietly pull for the teams that we hate during the regular season to prove that the team playing for the National Championship for the SEC (I can make an assumption at this point that at least one team in the NC will be an SEC team) truly did beat every team that they played during the regular season by comparing it to how said SEC teams fared during the bowl games playing teams from out of conference-establishing true dominance of the sport of college football on a national level.
I know that’s a wordy and semi-confusing explanation, but maybe if other conference’s grasped this concept of conference support for their other teams, they might could just be as dominate as the SEC in every facet of the game. I’m a UGA fan, and I hate Florida with a passion, UT and Alabama fans, and South Carolina for the mere fact that Steve Spurrier coaches them. I have little problem with Auburn because it’s always been a fairly clean rivalry..

@Boca Baby,
There are some who question Mallet’s character and have issues with how he performs in big games. He has choked several times. He has all the tools of an NFL QB he just has to convince NFL scouts that he has the head for it also. He could fall out of the top 10 and be the 3rd QB taken. He has a lot to prove in workouts and the combine. Either way, you don’t risk a #1 pick on him.

Luck in staying for his senior season for a simple reason that I hate to admit. But his decision is financial as well. A degree from Stanford, over your lifetime, is more valuable than an NFL contract. That can’t be said of any SEC school, not even Vanderbilt.

Pardon me dawgfan,
I was under the impression that we were talking about THIS year…
THIS year ACC runner-up beat the SEC runner-up on a neutral field.
THIS year 7-5 UNC beat 6-6 Tennessee in what was basically a home game for Tennessee.
THIS year ACC last place team Wake Forest destroyed SEC last place team Vandy in Nashville.
The UGA/GT game was very close in Athens where both teams were 6-6.
My point remains: the SEC has great teams at the top, which the ACC obviously doesn’t have. But everywhere else, the two conferences are pretty even.

The surrounding neighborhood around tech’s campus sports the 9th most dangerous crime rate in USA. Last I checked UGA had 12 arrests just on the football team and a deranged professor who went on a murder spree.
But yes, keep on bringing up the actions of a single former Tech student (not a graduate by the way) who was unaffiliated with the football program.

I am a damn yankee. Came to ATL in the mid 80’s and never left. Was a Browns fan growing up in Columbus. Bengals, not so much.
Been a Falcon fan since moving to town. Rooted for Jeff George, Miller, June Jones, Glanville, Deion and the rest. It’s great to have a stable organization, first class coach and, for the most part, character players.
Let’s hope for a good run.
P.S. Michael Jenkins – Buckeye! Made perhaps the biggest play in Buckeye history with a 40 yard touchdown pass on a 4th and 9 against Purdue during the most recent National Championship. Good to see him having a solid year. He’s money with the medium out routes on 3rd and long.

Georgia – Washington;

3) Arkansas – USC;
4) LSU – Arizona;
5) South Carolina – Arizona State;
6) Miss State – Oregon State;
7) Florida – Cal;
9) Tennessee – UCLA;
10) Kentucky – Washington State.
You might want to reserve crap talking about Oregon State, considering they were 3-4 against top 30 teams (Sagarin), compared to Miss State going 1-4. Yes, Oregon State played 7(!) top 30 teams. Georgia was 0-5 against top 30 teams, Washington was 1-5, and went on to beat Nebraska in a re-match. Granted, South Carolina is probably better than Arizona State, but the argument that the SEC is stronger than the Pac-10 grows weak, especially when you consider the above list does not include Ole Miss and Vandy.

And great points to add to the Capn’s sterling resume too. Two top picks in Stafford and Green, and an outstanding first rounder in Moreno, and what do we really have to show for it? That’s about as much damning evidence against keeping him on board as losing to Colorado and UCF this year, and going 2-8 lifetime against the Gators. Remind me again why he’s still around, and you aren’t allowed the ’such a good man’ scenario. And fluffing your winning percentage against the Lafayette Louisiana’s and Idaho State’s don’t count at all. The best high schools in Georgia could beat those teams.

Why so few bowl eligible teams from the Pac-10 this year?
Well, knowledgeable football fans know why. “SEC CHAMPS” is not one of them.
Take, for example, Oregon State, a team that went 4-5 in Pac-10 conference play. Why were they only 5-7, over all, at the end of the season, you might ask.
Because their out-of-conference schedule included: TCU, Louisville, and Boise State, against whom they went 1-3.
Likewise, Cal was 3-6 in conference, and played UC Davis, Nevada, and Colorado out-of-conference. Had Cal scheduled 3 cupcakes (instead of one), they would have been bowl eligible.
Let’s talk next year when the Pac-10 becomes the Pac-12, where they play only 8 conference games, and start scheduling more out-of-conference cupcakes like the SEC teams do.
By the way, what happens when the Aggies beat LSU in the Cotton Bowl tonight?

Denver, won;’t take AJ with the 2nd pick. There will be riots in the streets if they do… since WR is about the only position they have talent and depth at. They have serious holes to fill elsewhere and Fairley is much more likely who they take unless Carolina scares Denver by stating publicly that they love Fairley.
Carolina should then trade the pick to Denver for the #2 pick (swapping spots) and get Kyle Orton from Denver in exchange for a 3rd or 4th round pick (with it being the very first in those rounds it will be valuable to the Bronocs). Carolina would then get an experienced QB who was leading the lead in passing at week 6 this year to compete with Clausen, who doesn’t break the bank at $5M per year. They also get out of the first pick (less costly and don’t have to take the WR at #1) and then they can take AJ at #2 or Bowers OR trade down again 4-6 spots and essentially get the pick they gave to Denver back from the trade down a few spots.
Denver would then take Fairley and can get a quality player in the opening of the 3rd or 4th round and shore up their D. Getting rid of Orton helps clear the way for Tebow who now seems to have John Elway’s endorsement and the Broncos are going to go to battle with Tebow as their QB for the next 2 years. It clears cap space ($5M), gets them an extra pick (they don’t have a 4th rounder) and also helps with Tebow’s confidence for them to say… it is your team for a couple of years, lets see what you can do.

I’ll explain this ONE MORE TIME:
When you play a 9 game round-robin schedule, as does the Pac-10, then you more likely to have more teams with 5-4 and 4-5 in-conference records. When those same 5-4 and 4-5 teams schedule difficult out-of-conference games, then a lot of teams end up ant 5-7 and 4-8. This doesn’t happen in the SEC because there are only 8 conference games, and 3 of the 4 out-of-conference teams are cupcakes. So, a team that finishes 2-6 in conference (like Kentucky) can finish 6-6, after winning their 4 out-of-conference games (Louisville, Western Kentucky, Akron, and Charleston Southern in the case of Kentucky).

Sturdivant returning is a good thing. He is a kid who tore his ACL twice and is just now returning to form. He didn’t play the entire season.
Him coming back is a plus from the experience side and the character side. Starting over with freshmen offensive linemen is not the answer.

SEC CHAMPS, according to Massey, who has a much better system of rating teams than the AP or BCS polls, VT was rated at #9 and Michigan State at #25. Here you go on all the computers and their systems: Leaves alot to the administrBCS Computers
Now that we have an introduction to the larger picture of what a ranking algorithm can look like, lets take a look at the BCS formula and its components. The BCS formula itself would be classified as a meta ranking, as it used an average of other rankings to compute a result. The other classifications would be inherited from the selected components. 2/3 of this formula are the two human polls. The remaining third are the six BCS computers.
Anderson and Hester: Formulaic, Wins Only. This ranking is distinguished by its heavy reliance on calculating conference rankings in the determination of team rankings. Usually people go the other way around.
Billingsley: Sequential, Wins Only, Predictive. Any sequential method will be predictive, as the most recent games will quickly erase past games. Billingsley is unique for the historical application of his method and the groundbreaking work done to introduce the concept of computer rankings.
Colley: Advanced, Wins Only, Retrodictive. Most advanced methods will be retrodictive, as it takes effort to make them predictive. (I have found that adding a forgetting factor of 70% per week works really well to adjust score based algorithms.) Colley is unique in that he provided a detailed description of his algorithm, allowing independent verification of the exact numbers published. (I have used this to test score data collection programs.)
Massey: Advanced, Wins Only, Retrodictive. Massey appears to use his rankings to determine probability estimators of each game and then minimizing a product of these games, weighted by the strength of the opponent. His online description includes a formula for including scores. This method is not used in the BCS version, but some adjustment for opponent strength is likely.
Sagarin: Advanced, Wins+Home, Mixed. This method is far from clear, hidden behind a shield of proprietary language that keeps anyone from even being able to audit it to see if it is precise under guarded conditions. It appears to headily wight games against highly ranked teams. Based on years observation, it appears to have some strong intications of a partially sequential underpinning.
Wolfe: Advanced, Wins, Retrodictive. This ranking is fairly close to Colley, with a slightly more sophisticated (and their for non-linear) method of accounting for wins. Wolfe also published a sketch of his algorithm, but just short of enough to craft a faithful reproduction.
Well, there you have it, the BCS components in a nutshell. This would work great for seeding a tournament. Unfortunately the technology for that had not yet been developed.
I guess the floor is now open for what you would want in a computer ranking. I might even craft one the week of Thanksgiving.
ator of all of them.

Once again, SEC CHAMPS fails to understand how playing 9 in-conference games in an evenly matched conference, and 3 relatively tough out-of-conference games could result in a lot of 5-7 (and worse) teams.
To note: only 5 teams in the SEC had winning in-conference records. In the Pac-10, four teams had winning in-conference records. Of the 7 other teams with non-winning in-conference records in the SEC, there were 5 teams with non-losing records (6-6 or better). Of the 6 teams in the Pac-10 that had non-winning in-conference records, there was only one team with a non-losing record, Arizona State at 6-6.
I doubt highly that SEC CHAMPS is smart enough to chew on that fact.

Think about it. When you have 1 or 2 teams in a conference that are much stronger than the rest, it biases strength of schedule ratings against them. From what I saw of AJ Green, he seems to possess alot of talent. Too bad UGA did not utilize him more. Too bad he sold a Jersey and missed the first part of this season. Well, at least he didn’t have Reggie Ball throwing to him for the three years he has been at UGA.

The fact that 2010 college champs can continue to crack jokes constantly and on a “at-will” basis just shows how great the SEC is when you losers come on here and try to compare your conference with ours in any sort of manner-PLEASE!!
Here, I’ll give you a quote from another comment i made on another blog I made today to let you know what’s up:
Everyone knows the SEC is the best by the way-all the arguments I’ve heard from people on here the past 2 weeks has been:
“Well, the ACC beat you TWICE this year in bowls..” Whooptee- maybe this can be the first year in a consistent string of upcoming years for y’all? Both wins were over 6-6 teams btw..
“The Pac-10 really is a tough conference top to bottom”..when was the last time the Pac-10 had a national champion NOT named USC?
“The Big 10 is awesome because Ohio State beat Arkansas”..whooptee-Arkansas almost stole that game from y’all, you played 5 players (who have great tattoos by the way) that should have been playing to get that 0-9 monkey off your back and egg off Tressell’s face. Sh*t y’all can’t even count how many teams are in your conference and are so arrogant that you can’t change your conference’s name to “protect integrity” (then call your divisions Legends and Leaders??? PLEASE)
“Well, the Big 12 is awesome because..” well, no one has really been on these blogs saying the Big 12 is any good because half their teams are leaving next year and Oklahoma and Texas both never show up for big games (way to beat UConn this year OK…)
Wow-by the way, just say an eye-opening quote by Oregon’s AMAZING head coach: “At some point in the game, someone’s defense will have to step on the field and stop the other team’s offense. Who ever’s team does that with more success will probably win the game.”
Wow, really? Great analysis from the flagship team coming out of the Pac 10 to win y’all first NC for the conference in more than 5 years..(and btw-USC SHARED that NC with LSU in ‘03 if you forgot)

What is funny how you loosers get on here and have to try to make yourself feel better by saying a team or a conference “rules” – WOW man – a team you cheer for wins – way to go you must be a great person b/c some team you want to win, wins – why not try doing something with your own pathetic life instead of trying to live it through some college kids – the way most of you talk on here you should be coaching in the NFL and helping them with their draft day decisions and play calling.

Russ555- No, it wasn’t Murray taht looked bad in the games Green didn’t play in. He actually had good statisitics…despite the fact that the tema was loosing those games. Check the stats. articles were even written that stated that UGA had lost despite of the solid play on the young QB. The rest of the team struggled in other areas, but he still was throwing for about 200+ yds. a games. Green was out, but Kris Durham emerged. T. King’s a pretty good receiver, & the TE’s can catch…even though there were rarely used this yr…for some reason.

AJ Green’s wiry body will be quite fragile in the pros where hitting in the secondary has become brutal. I believe that Terrance Toliver (LSU), Julio Jones (UA), Michael Floyd (ND) have superior speed and a more durable frame than AJ. I think what makes AJ #1 with so many is the circus type catches that he makes from poorly thrown balls. That will be less of a factor at the next level than durability, size, and speed. AJ has 4.55 speed which is below the best in the NFL and below the three receivers above. Although Julio didn’t have a great year (compared to 2009) I think he’s the most balanced receiver with good hands (not as good as AJ though), toughness, superior speed, and able to generate lots of yards after the catch.

Hey ‘outside observer’…I’ll tell you what I think. Was watching one of those cable sports NFL football talking heads thing the other day, when the subject of teams – notably the Boston Patriots – that pay more attention to character and values than most others. In particular they ask themselves whether or not a guy wants to be a great football player, or does he just want to ‘get rich’. What I’m saying is that we don’t know what A.J. wants and unless he decides to give himself the chance to ‘be great’ by trying to ‘amend’ for his idiotic move, and subsequent suspension, and the impact that had on the entire UGA season – an impact that basically ruined the senior season for a lot of his teammates along with almost costing Mark Richt and the rest of the staff their jobs – unless he wants to show us that he’s capable of making a decision based on character traits that will follow him for the rest of his career, than I’m betting that he just wants to ‘get rich’.
By the way, Georgia should be ‘his favorite football team’ too.

10 of the last 13 number one picks were quarterbacks. I’d be surprised if Carolina, or some team to whom they trade the #1 pick, didn’t reach for Ryan Mallett or even Cam Newton with the #1 pick, as opposed to picking AJ Green. In any case, Green plays a position that is so dependent on circumstances that picking him #1 wouldn’t be very wise in my opinion. If you’re not picking a franchise QB number one, you’re much better off picking a game changing lineman like Jake Long or Ndamukong Suh. In this draft, I’d guess Nick Fairley or Da’Quan Bowers is that guy.
Calvin Johnson is the highest-drafted WR in recent memory, and although AJ Green is good, I don’t think he’s Calvin Johnson. (As a side note, I don’t have any particular bias towards Tech or against UGA, so don’t start that.) I’d be surprised to see him go #1.

“Leinart’s Wonderlic score was 35; Young’s was 15. Those translate to an IQ of 130 and 90 on the Terman scale. “Normal” or “average” IQ range is 90-110. The NFL likes to see 25 or above on the Wonderlic for QBs.”
And they are both at crossroads in their respective careers… So much for intelligence trumping a good work ethic… It kinda helps to have a fair amount of both….”
Brett Favre and Michael Vick both got a 22. Alex Smith got a 40. Chris Redman got a 16. Sage Rosenfels got a 32. Ben Roethlisberger got a 24. Wonderlic doesn’t measure a quarterback’s potential success any better than his ability to shoot a basketball.

“A.J. Green could be Georgia’s second No. 1 overall NFL draft pick in the last three years, joining Matthew Stanford.”
Does anyone do less with the talent that they have than Mark Richt? Two #1’s yet what happened at UGA? What happened this year? The talent is already here folks, but sadly, so are our coaches who don’t seem to have a clue how to use that talent. Remember, Richt recruited this year’s Heisman winner to be a Tight End! WTF??!

I think it is just great that Stanfords QB wants to finish his degree and he has faith enough in his abilities on the field that he can wait another year to get the bucks. He will get a good degree from a great school. Once his pro days are over, he will not have to depend on some sports network to employ him. He will have an education and land a good job.
The real shame to this whole scenario surrounding declaring early for the draft is that the majority of these folks that are gifted athletically, have missed such a great opportunity to get a good education. Suppose, one of these highly touted atheletes gets a permanent injury and can no longer play the game. Has he had the discipline to save some of his money? Does he have the education to start another career? In most cases, the answer is probably no. For that fact, what about all of the 4 and 5 star atheletes that really turn out to be less than that in college or the pros. What do they fall back on.

You can always go back and get an education. Your body has a much more limited window of time in which it can handle the rigors of being a pro athlete. As commendable as getting an education is, Andrew Luck at age 40 will still have the brain power to go get his degree, but he will never again have back this year of his body being at peak physical condition. Passing up being the #1 pick and the $50 million of guaranteed money that comes with it to do something he could just as easily do later in his life is not a smart decision.

By the time most of them even figure out what they have typed, they have already hit the submit button and it is too late. I like to read these blogs and comment on the subject at hand. Not fill it up with a bunch of crap that does not apply to the article. There are a few folks on here that could make great politicians or statisticians for that fact. If they don’t like the way the stats. read, twist them around to make it look favorable. By my count here, we have 97 top level recruiters, 121 top draft picks and 321 journalist, who are experts on college football. I am impressed.

The Lucks are not poor people. I agree with your contention about the time to maximum earning potential factor for most players. Still, Luck is like Peyton Manning in this respect; he’s ahead of the comprehension curve. He had that red shirt year to mature physically and mentally. However, he’s an architectural design major. That’s one of the fields where you really want to have a continuity of learning. Depending on his influences as a architect, that can be a great factor. I know it sounds silly to us, the average person. But Andrew Luck is not an average person by any means.

It would surprise me if The Panthers take AJ Green first, if they haven’t traded first pick away. I don’t see how he could be much help at all to their problems. I also don’t know how effective Cam Newton will be in the pros. What works great in college ball sometimes doesn’t do all that well in the NFL.

The difference between Newton and Russell is Newton can actually throw an accurate pass. Russell was erratic in college, and Oakland got what they deserved with a wasted pick.
As much as I’d hate to see Newton in the NFC South Carolina should pick him.
Green should go pro. UGA needs to change the culture, and he’s a huge part of the problem.

Najeh,
you hit right on with your 7:04 post
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that the Panthers (a division team for the Falcons) will not get a chance to draft Andrew Luck (someone who I think will be a very good franchise QB in this league for a long time, but has to go to the right team, not sure of Panthers are that team anyways).
To me last year Jake Locker (WA) made a huge mistake not coming out and cost himself a very high pick (possibly even the number 1 overall), his stock has dropped since and while Washington did beat Nebraska in their bowl game, Locker had an injury plagued and mediocre season (with his stats).
Standford had an amazing year, only one loss, won their bowl game, Luck was a Heisman finalist…I just don’t know what else could be achieved by that team? They aren’t going undefeated next year right (to top their season)??? So why stay? OK, you want a degree, like you said it, get it after your NFL career, you’ll have plenty of FREE time then.
Luck is costing himself a very rare and special deal, to be a number 1 pick in the NFL draft.
You would have think he learned from Jake Locker…oh well…good for the Falcons I guess:)
and onto A.J. Green….this coming from a UGA fan, I wouldn’t take him with the 1st pick in the draft. I do think he’ll be a terrific NFL WR, but just not worth that high a pick.

GA DAWG 97;
Let’s see, 45 million dollars before taxes. Take away 50% for taxes, and you now have 22.5 million. Assuming he will buy a house and if it is in California, there goes another 4 or so million, with property taxes being another 60 grand each year. Gotta spend a bunch on a ride so there goes more change. Now just assume we are talking a 7 year contract for that 22.5 million. That averages out to 3.5 million before he even buys anything. Hopefully, he would be a little smarter than the average pro player and invest some of that money, but let’s face it, most are not Rhodes Scholars to start out with. Forgot to add the agents 10% also. Where we, as average Joes might be able to live just fine on the cash left over after taxes, agents, and high living expenses, most of these folks probably can not. In Mr. Lucks case, I am pretty confident he could, but he also knows that if he stays, he can actually enjoy the game he loves, get his degree and still get that 45 million. No matter what happens, the players will still get big bucks from the league, after the labor dispute is over with.
