Georgia coach Mark Richt is coming off his worst season as a head coach. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
Mark Richt is not going to fire offensive coordinator Mike Bobo but he did suggest Wednesday that he’s going to be more hands-on with the offense and the team in general from this day forward.
Comment: That’s probably a good idea, given that it’s his job on the line.
Question: Why did it take a loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl for Richt to realize something was wrong?
In his season-ending press conference Wednesday, via our Tim Tucker, Richt said that he’s going to have more time freed up in his schedule “to [spend] more time doing the things I love the most, which is study the game of football …”
Later, he reiterated, “I’m going to have the ability to have the time it takes to truly study the game of football, the trends and what’s going on, so a higher percentage of my time is going to be able to be used for that.”
Those are interesting statements. They suggest that non-coaching activities have been taking up too much of Richt’s time and adjustments will be made in his schedule to prevent that from happening again.
I don’t doubt that can happen. The demands on a college football coach can be enormous, let alone a coach in the SEC. If Richt is going to tweak his weekly schedule and athletic director Greg McGarity does some things to give him more time to be hands on with his players and the game plan, that can only be good for the program.
But it shouldn’t have taken a 6-7 season for Richt to realize something was wrong. There have been signs of the program sliding for a few seasons, going back even to the 10-3 season in 2008. The Dogs were preseason No. 1 but were flattened in key games against Alabama and Florida. Both opponents looked better prepared. Both played with a physical and mental edge that the Dogs generally have lacked.
Things obviously have deteriorated since. Georgia is 5-9 in its last 14 SEC games. Since 2009, they’ve lost to LSU, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Auburn. (Also, Florida twice.). Perception that the Dogs have been passed by other programs in the conference is now reality.
For what it’s worth, I believe the criticism of Bobo has been a little excessive. He deserves some credit for Aaron Murray’s development. In the last seven games of the regular season — before the 10-6 loss in the Liberty Bowl — the Dogs scored 41, 43, 44, 31, 55, 31 and 42 points.
What’s the bigger issue, the offense or Todd Grantham’s defense? In the SEC, Georgia finished fourth in scoring offense and seventh in total offense; seventh in scoring defense and fourth in total defense.
I’ve never believed the problems are as simple as changing plays or schemes on offense or the defense. It’s big picture stuff: preparation, mindset, toughness, focus, edge, consistency. It’s having an identity, knowing what a Georgia team is going to give you from week to week. That whole, “Finish the drill,” thing has been an empty rallying cry.
It’s great that Richt believes that something needs to be done. It just shouldn’t have gotten to this point. The question now is whether this is too big of a hole for him to dig out of so quickly.

He should have demoted Bobo to QB coach and co-offensive coordinator and taken the reins of the offense himself. But, not he still has a scapegoat in Bobo when there is no improvements next year.

Bobo can only do what he is allowed to do. The reality is we have no creativity whatsoever. When is the last time we faked a punt? On-side kicked? Ran a reverse or reverse pass? Sweep pass? Faked a field goal? Dang we try enough of them in the red zone. I don’t want to here we should have made it on 3rd Down that is why they give you 4. We have no exicitment, creativity, or even act as if we care. When Nick Saban shows more creativity than we do then we need a change.

I’m glad he used the words “cutting edge” because it seems like we’ve been relying on what worked 10 years ago instead of what gets the job done today. The Sabans of the world are always on the cutting edge. The lack of identity and the general vibe that the Dogs are content in being mediocre has got to go. The Dogs of 01-05 imposed their will and had a true identity. You knew what you were getting, win or (rarely) lose. Seems like a long time ago now. Gotta get it back.

I know Bobo didn’t have a great philosophy v. UCF, but I have to say 6-7 definitely wasnt his nor the offense’s fault. CMR is looking for any scapegoats he can find & thats sad, but I agree 100% about fla & bama games a few years ago, UGA didnt look prepared physically or mentally and that falls squarely on the head coach.

There is nothing to suggest that Mark is capable of coaching to the current level of competition in the SEC/East. He had Stafford, Massaquoi, Moreno all on the same team and couldn’t even win the Sec east/Compete for a National Championship. It’s a constant blame game that continues with Richt and he HAS NEVER ONCE stated “I haven’t been good enough, devoted enough” or taken responsibility for any failures.
He was propped up his first five years by Van Gorder which masked a lot of offensive deficiencies, and the Sec was not anywhere close to the current competition. The fact is this, he is not a championship caliber coach and doesn’t have the capacity to magically change/take UGA to the next level. The state of Georgia alone produces enough 4 & 5 star recruits to compete and have a chance every year (to win at the highest level). If McGarity would truly be objective and take of his saint Richt glasses, he would make the tough/right decision and bring in the very best coach to led this program.
Time for change has come and gone and yet Richt still remains…here’s to another 6-7 season!

Mr. Schultz you and I actually traded some e-mails last year about how ardent I was supporting Coach Richt and how he’s proven himself capable of deserving another year. That was the end of 2009, and now we’ve gone that year and without sounding like I am the typical guy full of p*** and vinegar, I want to say that I am officially eating crow. (you might remember me, I am the Naval Academy grad who is a dyed in the wool UGA fan since birth) —- BL, it seems like it’s less athletica capability because most folks agree that incoming HS talent is among the best. It’s a mindset. They don’t have the killer instinct. They don’t have the discipline. Most directly, they don’t show heart. It’s evidenced by moments where studs roll over, hands on hips, take a play off here and there, don’t tackle, jump the snap-count, commit personal fouls and on top of that, continue to win the Fulmer Cup. —- My biggest fear, we keep Richt another season (and we will because I think McGarity thinks to change things now would leave an untenable situation for 2011). The problem is – keeping him – AND FOR THE RECORD HE IS AN AMAZING PERSON – sets the program back a year anyway – so why not rip the bandaid off now while guys like Murray are young and can get 3 years with a staff and only suffer one transition year? Now they have 2 years with new staff, one of which is transition. We’re tailsliding….and no one seems to want to make the hard choice to right the ship.

Schultz…. why are you trying to paint the picture that Richt has been completely oblivious to the fact that things have not been clicking well? A simple rule in college football, is that if you decide to make drastic changes to operation during the season, you can expect things to only get worse until the next offseason.
Have you listened to Richt’s pressers all season?? Did I miss something you caught? Apparently you think Richt has been dancing in la la land acting like everything UGA had done so far was just perfect. Wrong. Richt has expressed concern all season long.
There’s a reason Richt coaches a SEC football team, and you only write negative opinion based blogs in order to get hits to generate advertising costs. Mainly, because Richt DOES know what he is doing.

Haha-I commented on someone’s AJC blog yesterday with the exact ideas in your article Schultz. I mentioned yesterday that first, Richt needs to quit making Ford commercials (a non-coaching activity I believe), and second, he needs to be more hands on with the offense like he was the first 5 years of his tenure (and when our offensive players-yes, even DJ Shockley and Danny Ware-were better prepared and developed as young football players). UGA was far and away better when Richt was the OC and HC, and it’s funny it took him 5 years later to realize it.

Your question is valid. However, I may be reading between the lines, but it appears that McGarity is far more proactive in his communication with Richt. I think McGarity has created the opportunity for Richt to implement what he probably knew needed to be done for quite some time. McGarity may be a bigger influence on the programs than we first thought. Base on Richts gushing about McGarity one could surmise that his relationship with Evans was poor by comparison.

Nice Article Mark. It seems like by his own admission he feels like some of the stuff they do may be antiquated and it needs to evolve. Rather than putting it on his assistants, he’s essentially saying that overall he needs to get better and evolve what they are trying to do in order to get different results.
It’s a somewhat unique approach when the program has fallen as much as this one has for several years now but it could work if they players put forth the effort it’s going to take.

Bobo is not the problem….granted, he’s no firebrand….as a matter of fact, he’s low key, but he is a solid football coach and a good coordinator.
Having a passive, low key head coach is a problem. The head coach sets the tone, the attitude….the edge….and the expectations of behavior……the discipline and code of conduct. On and off the field.
Maybe Richt is a leopard who can change his spots……..I doubt it……and if not, then God Bless us and good luck for any success next year.

As for Richt getting more involved in the play calling, to me that is only more delay. Remember before he appointed Bobo Offensive Coordinator? We were complaining about Richt’s play calling and wanting a coordinator! I can’t see where this is solving anything. Yes, Murray did well for the most part, but let’s not give Bobo the credit – let’s give it to Murray! He has the talent, the ability, the judgement, and is an avid student of the game. Bobo had nothing to do with that. I see more of the same without an offensive mind. Bobo is one of the most predictable coaches on the planet. No imagination and no vision.
As for the defense, I am willing to see if substantial improvements take place. If Grantham is successful with accomplishing what Erk Russell accomplished, I would say he might just be a good candidate for “head coach in waiting”.

Sometimes you need an outsider’s view to see that there are issues and McGarity has provided that for Richt. Same as any other company that needs to reach a certain level of success. There’s no doubt he gets the message that the program stinks right now and he knows his neck is on the line to get it back to a level that UGA should be.

Schultz: What a load of crappola you have fallen for. What specifics did he cite. Are we ever going to improve on special teams, the last kick blocked was probably by Champ Bailey. He puts no emphasis on special teams. When is he going to design some offensive plays to exploit Murray’s ability to run the ball, like maybe a run/pass option down on the goal line.
Richt refuses to believe that his tired old offense could use some refining to exploit the talents of his players. He refuses to admit that his recruits do not get better at the rate that players do in other programs. The guy has run out of ideas and is just trying to hang on and hope he gets lucky.

Mark has earned the right to get an extension to his contract. He is a great Christian and that reason alone makes him a great coach. His year round tan is also impressive. Bobo probably needs a vote of confidence too.

I think McGarity is the key. I think Evans was over his head and that he self-destructed will turn out to be a huge net positive for UGA. The program is already showing signs of moving in the right direction. It is going forward with Richt and staff next year or he is gone and someone else takes the reins. Richt seems to have finally gotten a sense of urgency, and I think that is because of McGarity. Either way, change is coming. Hope and change is good, right?

Okay, lets talk about facts here. Richt is going nowhere, Bobo is going nowhere and Grantham is here in all his glory for a while. We know we are going to get some, not all of the Dream Team recruits. My question is even if we get Crowell, Rome etc…. Do we all really think that they are going to make that much of a difference immediately? In comparison, we couldn’t beat UCF with A.J. Green on the field along with A. Murray and Orson Charles who I think if given a chance could be one of the best players in the Country. I would take AJ over any of these kids that we “might” get and we still couldn’t score a touchdown on UCF.
I know everyone is talking about Bobo, but I think the argument could be made that our defense is in much worse shape than our offense. At least our offense can score occasionally but our defense cant stop anybody from throwing or passing, Ever. This nonsense about the 3-4 scheme versus the 4-3 scheme and the special players needed to run each is ridiculous. Line up and find the dang football and go hit somebody in the friggen mouth. There is something else going on here. Mark appears distracted. I don’t know if something is wrong in his family life, some family member illness or what it could be.
A wise coach once told me that it is not important to “want to win” he said everybody has that goal. He said it is more important to “hate to lose”. Saban has that quality, I think Paul Johnson has that quality, and Urban Meyer had that quality until it burned him out.
I am a big Mark Richt fan. He is an excellent x’s and o’s coach. For all you Brian Van Gorder supporters, remember is was Mark that discovered him and hired him from a college in South Florida as he was impressed at how he defended Richt’s offense when he was at FSU.
I am still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but if drastic improvement is not made in the next year, I think as classy as a person as Mark is, he won’t have to be fired, he will resign and move on to what his true passion really is the ministry, family, etc.

CMR–Mike Bobo is the coordinator; Mike Bobo is the quarterback coach, and Coach [Stacy] Searels is the running game coordinator. And they have done a great job…
What? When did they do a great job?? The play calling was horrible most games, and the running game was virtually non existent. QB play was only bright spot.

Hey Jeff, what makes any of this different from what he did last year? What can he possibly do that’s different from what they’re already doing? What he’s gonna study extra game film or or tell a QB when to throw it away? The problem in case you didn’t notice wasn’t something Richt can fix by himself, there were too many gap mistakes on the OL. The receivers were never able to get wide open. The RB’s couldn’t break a tackle if their life depended on it. Nothing will change next year but at least Richt will be gone.

For whatever reason, the program has slipped in its creativity on offense. Richt came in as a bright young offensive mind, but in past years that has not seemed to define the program. Of course he’s not going to throw his assistants under the bus in public, but it’s a good thing more of his time will be spent studying the game.
But none of this addresses the lack of toughness or the issues on defense. Richt also came in with Van Gorder at his side. Grantham’s second year will have to show he can coach a college defense just as tough and tenacious. The team’s attitude has to be led by the defense.

Yeah, but sadly I can’t think of many coaches who put the fear of God into their players. CMR should be number one in that department. As an Auburn fan, I don’t know if Chizik is a hard a$$ on his players but I do know that no one has been arrested or fired under his watch. I remember hearing a story from Frank “Big Hurt” Thomas once about how he was scared to death of telling Pat Dye that he wanted to focus solely on baseball. Now, Frank Thomas is well over 6 feet tall and could bench press a MARTA bus with ease. Anyway, he said that he was sweating bullets when he went into his office because he knew Pat Dye would not want to hear it.

Face the facts people. UGA has been relevant in the national picture once in the last 6 seasons. They have underacheived and wasted plenty of NFL talent in that time frame. Did he make UGA relevant? Yeah, for half the time he’s been here UGA has been relevant. Being better than terrible still isn’t that great. UGA needs to make a splash with a new coach. One can learn from watching the implosion of the Minn Vikings. That program has totally fallen apart and has been a disease for years. I’m not saying UGA is that bad, but when the players don’t have ANY respect for the coaching things will fall apart. Same thing happened at USC with Lou Holtz. Steve Spurrier, as much as I laugh at him, does not tolerate that crap and he turned that horrible program around……well, turned it around a little. They still suck.
My point is, CMR needs to either get tough or leave. UGA has a great football history and LOADS of talent. I am SHOCKED that UGA hasn’t won more national titles with the talent it’s produced over the years.

Mobile – I’ll take a shot at it! The administrative responsibility reoganization is a bigger deal than it appears on the surface. I have witnessed firsthand how the athletic dept at UF manages their business and it is a bit different, and I think better, than what UGA has been doing. Essentially CMR has been the athletic director for football at UGA, managing everything just like they did in Dooley’s era; whereas at UF, UM was striclty focused on football – and was handled by the AD for promotional events/functions/purposes.
I believe the relief from very time consuming non-practice and non-game prep functions will help – he will have more time devoted to football. Like with the Boise game, AD GM has made the challenge clear to the football coaches.
Remember the good times…root like heck for the Dawgs…it is great to be a Georgia Bulldog.
I trust Coach Richt can refocus and get it done. If not, then we restart and go for the best coach available. (Mullen or Strong)

Richt rightly didn’t wash UGA’s laundry in public but I wonder what was taking up his time and keeping him away from coaching.
According to Tim Tucker’s column
“Richt said director of player development John Eason, a former wide receivers coach, and administrative assistant Dave Van Halanger, a former director of strength and conditioning, will handle certain duties that previously fell on the head coach. Eason serves as the football program’s academic liaison, and Van Halanger heads a new mentoring program for the players”
Sounds as if the off-field problems have affected the on-field performance.
It looks to me as if UGA made a great hire with McGarity. These issues are not new and the previous AD obviously did little to help Richt

POAD,
A Tech fan on the recruiting blog just called Chip Towers out for being a UGA homer in his recruiting news.
Check out what Chip Tower’s response was……..
“Ramblor: My assignment this week is to cover the Under Armour All-America game down here in Florida. There are 10 Georgia kids in this game and, at the moment, none of them are considering Georgia Tech. James Vaughters said he may reconsider Tech if Jim Harbaugh leaves Stanford and I’ve reported that. The kids down here are all talking about the Dream Team concept. National analysts from ESPN, Rivals and Scout are writing about, too. It’s a legitimate storyline and a fluid news item because of the events that are taking place here in Florida tonight.
I’d like to write more about Georgia Tech while I’m down here but I can’t make it up. I’ll invite you to share with me/us any tips or leads you may have and will be happy to engage in any discussions you’d like to initiate. That said, I’ll be traveling from Orlando to St. Pete shortly and there’s not much I can do during a 90-mile commute.
Again, this blog is as much yours as it is mine, so feel free to initiate discussions about any recruiting subject you’d like.”

Lombardi put it best “You’ve got to pay the price” We all as we get older see our priorties change.
You can get away with that in the WAC or ACC. You can’t in the SEC or the NFL.
When you realize that you can’t do that anymore, you get out. Meyer did, and I think Mark is going through a period of introspection and asking himself “do I want to do this anymore”?

He’s been great for our school and our program, but its time for a change, and I think a change that is more than “I now realize that I am a football coach and Im supposed to coach, not do excel spreadsheets on the grass growing rate on the practice field”. Come on… Focus on cutting edge football!!! Here’s and idea, lets focus on having no arrest. Lets focus on not kicking a field goal on 4th and goal at the 2! No more running the 3rd string RB on 2nd and 23. Doesnt everyone agree that you try for a nice 10 yard play that will give you a manageable 3rd down? I’ve watched this team my whole life and Im sick and tired of buying the gear and the tickets and the gas to travel and all the $hit talk throughout the year. When it’s 40 seconds left in the half and we have the ball, we will kneel on it and just try again at the start of the 2nd half since we get the ball anyway instead of trying to get some points … instead of using your big playmaker to set the tone, you will use him as a decoy, instead of going to him early and establishing him as the decoy later in the game …

4. Winning the Fulmer Cup for the most players arrested.
5. Winning the title of #1 party school (i.e., the most drunken student body in the USA).
6. A sleazy assistant coach who razzes opposing players, unethical coaching conduct in violation of NCAA rules.
7. A super sleazy head coach who thinks he’s a saint, but recruits thug wannabes, gangbangers, and illiterate morons.

Arkansas has the most penalties in the SEC and that really hurt them as well. The dropped passes were horrible and those dropped passes cost them TD’s. Arky has a terrible defense which also hurt them. The way the ESPN announcers were talking you’d think that O State was the best ever. When Arky blocked that punt I was sure Mallet and company would score. O State is not fast and Pryor is NOT Cam Newton. I got so sick of them talking about how Pryor was so similar to Cam. LOL. If Pryor is similar then why don’t the numbers add up?

Until Richt tells me he will become more aggressive in every aspect of the game his words are like trying to put a bandaid on a cut artery!!!! We did not block a punt all season!!! Why!!! Because we have guys halfway down the field getting ready to block for a fair catch!!!! Bobo’s playcalling goes exactly like this. On 1st down pass if its incomplete got to run on 2nd down Always!!! Where did the slant pass and screen pass go this year??? Play action only works if you can only run the ball!!! I personally think the game of college football offensively has passed Richt and Bobo bye!!! There is no creativity in our offense yet Richt said 2 years ago we would have a offense that fits our starting qb!!! Well it didn’t work for Cox and looked like we kept Murray in 3rd and long all season. I actually didn’t think he would have kept from getting hurt!!! Bottom line is there will be no coaches coming in so I just don’t see attitudes changed from the players standpoint!!! The players are the ones that have to belief in the coaching staff and I sure hope they do because I have lost all faith in Richt!!! He coaches not to lose instead of coaching to win!!! SEC CHAMPIONSHIP OR BYE BYE RICHT!!!

As long as Mike Booboo calls plays, Georgia will settle for 2nd best. His offense is so predictable that SEC defensive cord know what play he will run on 2nd. and 7. or 3rd. and 4. And if you don’t believe me just look at where we stand 3rd. down conversion in the SEC. MIke take Vince’s daughter and go to UT if they will have you.

UGA lost 4 games by 7 points or less. SC game by close till the end, so was Miss St. Auburn game was close until they pulled away in the 4th quarter.
UGA was in every game going into the 4th quarter, no one blew them out for 3 quarters.
But 4th quarter & OT collapes defined the season.
Freshman Murray cracking under pressure? Conditioning? Play-calling? Poor 4th quarter adjustments?
Win the Fla (lost by 3 in OT), UCF (lost by 4), and Col game (lost by 2), and UGA’s 9-4.

SEC CHAMPS, that actually gave me a chuckle. I’ve watched CMR for 10 years now and never really been impressed with his decision making, or game planning. I’m basically old school and believe you need a solid running game, a physical presence, kinda Sabanish, if you will.
I truly started questioning his intelligence/ability as a football coach against you guys 2005. We have the ball, the lead, with about seven minutes left. CMR called 3 pass plays, ran 23 seconds off the clock, kicked it to you guys and the rest is history. My wife’s an AU alum, looked at her right then, and told her he didn’t have a clue about SEC football. Nothing he’s done since has given me any reason to believe any differently.

It looks like this will free him up to do that. I think UGA has the athletes and coaching staff to be very competitive in 2011 with these minor tweaks. You don’t have to blow up everything just tweak it. Maybe what McGarity is putting in place is the same model that was used at UF that got them 2 National Titles in 6 years. Give it chance.

SEC CHAMPS, I think your probably right to be nervous. Two things scare me about Oregon, the first one is their coach. He’s a good one, and he has icewater in his veins. The second is their no huddle offense, it keeps the defense from substituting freely, and will wear you down if they sustain drives.
That said, I believe Auburn has the intangibles to win, and if ever a team had “chemistry” and “destiny” it would seem to be Auburn. I think Newton, and Fairley, again are the difference. Auburn has so many offensive weapons they are impossible to play defence against.
Auburn wins a hard fought game, putting the Ducks away early in the fourth quarter, then pulls away. Good luck, and “War Damn Eagle”….

Much of mark Richt’s early success was because of Van Gorder. This team has not been tough enough since Van Gorder left town. Van Gorder’s top 5 nation wide defense hide alot of Richt’s mistakes early on. It was easy to over look Richt’s weaknesses as long as the team was winning. Mark Richt is not a good coach. I didn’t feel that way until after the GT game this year. What I saw in UGA vs GT was 2 bad teams playing each other. I am not a GT basher, I am a UGA fan and the truth may hurt but it is what it is. The dawg fans are not that smart given, but we are talking FOOTBALL not politics. Dawgs are smart in their passion for UGA football. The Hope & Change sales pitch ain’t going to work. So in the words of Richt he thinks Searles and Bobo “have done a good job.” REALLY???
I think he must be one of the only people that think that is the case. So, if Grantham and Bobo have done a “good job” per Richt, then where is the problem? Richt is stating that he will have fewer administrative duties this year so that he can study offenses. Does ANYONE other than Richt think that this is the real problem and the real solution to the problem?
I’m afraid we are looking at more of the same next year and I fear that if we get off to a bad start like 2010 that the proverbial writing will be on the wall and we will have a lame duck head coach about mid-season. Which will only further erode UGA’s attractiveness for a new HC, will really hurt recruiting, and will cause the players to go into a funk causing even more losses.
If you’re a real Dawg fan this is simply not good not matter how you look at it.

“CMR has forgotten more than most people will ever know” about coaching and college football. Yes, he has also forgotten how to win championships …..be they SEC East or SEC Championships or now, small bowl championships.
Folks …………….coaching is not a jobs program. A coach comes in, he is very, very, very highly paid when compared to a surgeon or pastor or a teacher or a small business owner or start up entrepreneur. He knows that it about winning right now and major bowls. He also knows that it will not go on for 25+ years like with Joe Pa or Vince Dooley or Shug Jordan. The name of the game is to win big, win bowls and see a better opp, then take it and move on and end up in the TV sports booth doing bowl games ………………..wealthy. Period.
Richt has not acheived anything important in the last 3 or four years. THIS is why he is paid. His job incentive package is structured with championship, major bowl clauses, bonuses, etc. He knows that he has failed and he knows that UGA still has to pay him. So, he talks alot, he moves the chairs on the deck of the sinking ship and we wait until the end of 2011.
Here is what absoutley could happen …………….again. UGA opens in September and loses in an ugly affair with Boise State in the Ga. Dome. Then UGA could lose again to SC and to MSU and who ever else is in our first 4 or 5 games. Then, McGarity might fire him right then and there. This scenario is a 45-55% chance of happening to UGA.
Folks …………….. THIS can get uglier. Why wait??

Jeff, I didn’t take the Librarian Bowl loss for Mark Richt to figure out he had a problem, he knew it after the 1-4 start. It’s like his New Years Resolution is to turn things around with a fresh start and I can feel what he is saying. The new AD knows how Florida gets it done and I think they he will be a big help. Florida State hired a new strength and conditioning coach and it obviously helped them, so I think we’re making some steps in the right direction. Georgia needs a running back, they have a great QB. Let’s hope CMR quits some of the bad habits of 2010??

Richt doesn’t know the meaning of timeliness. Either he refuses to se the obvious or he’s just not paying attention. Whatever it is, it has greatly undermined his position as HC and will probably lead to his dismissal after next season. He’s been asleep at the wheel for the last three and he’s pretty much driven the program over the cliff. That’s a real shame but he has nobody but himself to blame. McGarity’s doing every thing possible to help Richt succeed but I think it’s much too little much too late.

CMR does not know how to develop talent. He focuses way way too much on one player (AJ Green this year ) that may have proven to be really good in HS and ignores the rest of his talent. We had great talent on this team but they would have a great play get some badly needed yardage and then be sent to stand on the sidelines until they punted usually 3 and out. So his so called superstars could get the job done NOT! I will name some from this year Chris Durham, Orson Charles, Aaron White, Chapas, King, and there are more from this year and other years… can you say Massaquoi?? Rich Rod needs a job and even with his failures at Michigan I think he would be better he does actually show passion for the game. He just needed superstar DC.

I like coach Richt, but I am as baffled as he seems to be about what is really wrong. I am concerned about the mindset among the players than anything else. I just think the players at UGA (and elsewhere) think they are better than they really are. All those stars on their scouting reports have gone to their heads. I even see the players coming in thinking the same thing. Guys at the Under Armor practice saying if they all signed together they would absolutely win a national championship! They haven’t even played college ball yet. They’re already full of themselves! Breaking those attitudes down and making them into real winners is something our coaching staff seems to lack lately. And Richt’s demeanor has little to do with it. You can be a nice guy and get your point across. THE BENCH is the most powerful weapon in a coaches arsenal. Start sitting the slack ones and the rest will straighten up.
As far as cutting edge, there are some things you can do on the offensive side, like no-huddle, that would be a help, but I think evaluating talent (current and future) is the biggest thing Richt should be working on.
After the bowl I was finally wanting to fire Richt, but Mack Brown is 5-7. Did he forget how to coach too, or is it passing him by? What happened to the defense? Nobody is talking about how poorly Muschamp did. Gave up more points than we did, and he’s not a first-year guy.

January 5th, 2011

Does anyone out there know if Bean Anderson and the Gathers kid from SC are truly big boy nose tackles that can hold up and occupy two O linemen?? Can these two men play big boy ball? Are they THE MISSING LINK ( s ) for UGA’s D line???
Richard Samuels and that Jarvis Jones kid ( USC tranferee) could be starting LBs for UGA. If so, that means that UGA in 2010 played their # 2 D unit the entire year, thusly setting up some improvement? in these specific areas next year?? Does experience matter in the SEC or do bulk and brute strength only get it done?
Like to hear some feed back on these two questions, please.

Put a Johnson or Spurrier in this place. The press boys have little affection for either one but you can take what they say to the bank. Mainly they say what they think is wrong, try not to sugarcoat it whether it is one of their players or an assistant coach or themselves. They are usually upset and cranky, not caring if they are overly polite to the press, pleasing or hoodwinking the press is not going to win one game for them. You can tell Richt is not changing anything, he just lost another player to the law. I think Richt is one of those people that does it all politically correct but in the end produces very little. I see guys like him in all paths of life, above it all, not getting involved, not cluttering his life with other people’s problems. He is almost out there with the rest of us looking in, like he can’t understand these crazy kids either. Smith? One TD vs SC in 09, tons of game costing fumbles, etc. See KY and other games like that. Yes, Smith is fast. so???

You’re right Jeff, Grantham is clearly a mistake. Richt kills me. He made the hire based on the recommendation of his brother in law, Brad Johnson, who was at Dallas the same time as the vagabond Grantham. Richt’s like a kid. His mentality is: “isn’t this neat; I’m hiring a defensive co-ordinaor based on the recommendation of my sister’s husband. Won’t that be cool if it works.” The guy must be crazy. Bobo’s situation is similar. He’s not the OC because of qualifications, but as a result of his marriage to Barbara Dooley’s neice, His wife is Barb’s brother’s daughter ! Nothing is looked at objectively up there. It’s all in-bred “Georgia People” who drink from the same cool-aid pitcher and never genuinely challange each other. They all rationalize in the same way because it’s the easy and safest way to exist.
Compare the credentials of Florida’s strenth and conditioning coach with those of Mcgarity’s choice, Tereshinski. There is no comparison. Any objective evaluation would not result in his being hired, but because he was a former player, etc, Mcgarity goes ahead. I don’t know about this guy as an AD. It seems to me he’s being taken advantage of by Richt. But he’s a Georgia man so that’s all that matters. This unhealthy political in-breeding has already cost Georgia in a big way, and it’s only going to get worse, Especially with the emergence of Derek Dooley and Will Muschamp, who leave the emotion and “isn’t this neat” out of the equation and hire in a professional manner based on the candidate’s qualifications. What a mess up there. Lastly, Richt’s in love with himself. the tinted hair, fake tan, etc. and now talk of how he feels like a first year coach. Who cares about his personal feelings. We’re not interested. The guy’s obviously in love with himself. I think the real issue that needs to be addressed is not how the guy feels, but his missing a SATURDAY PRE – SEASON PRACTICE to go watch his son play football. Not a Spring practice but a preseason practice in August. McGarity knows the guy’s not working hard and won’t do any thing about it. Do you think the AD at Alabama has daily conversations with Saban? Tell the truth, one thing I can accurately say is I always use facts and keep emotion out of it. If it’s my opinion, there will be an IMO before the statement. Bottom line is at $3 million a year, we haven’t gotten what we’ve paid for. IMO, the program is “pathetic” top to bottom now under CMR’s leadership. Yes, if I could have my way, we would have a new coach tomorrow. Until then, or improvements, I will keep as much pressure on McGarity as my little influential world will allow.

There were many problems for UGA starting with recruiting players who for one reason or another either had injuries in high school and in their early college careers especially those offensive linemen numbering near a dozen who were so severely injured that they contributed very little playing time but took up roster spots and UGA allowing them time to try to heal and when they may should have not had their scholarship renewed which is what other college teams seem to be doing so they can reload roster players. In other words UGA has been very considerate of players with injuries than their competitors.
Also, because of the offensive line injuries, UGA felt they had to sign more offensive linemen that took up roster spots from possible depth at other positions like running back and quarterback. The main problem however still lies in planning and not achieving proper spacing and depth at every position especially quarterback and running back. Red shirting roster players because they did not have the skill level or size to compete as freshman is understandable in some cases but when it is the norm rather than the exception, it means that UGA recruiting standards need some serious upgrading. When you sign 20-23 players and all but 3 or 4 get redshirted, you leave the mandated roster limit of 85 with fewer players to play more minutes which does lead to more injuries when those players are tired and having to play with injuries which can make them worse. UGA roster also always carries 2 or 3 injured players on red shirt in the upper class which further shrinks the number of available players. UGA has an advantage in that the HOPE Scholarship can and does provide partial academic scholarships that good borderline players could walk on and play some good football minutes and that program of signing walkons needs to be augmented with more careful planning, research, and recruiting by coaches that might find some real talent desiring to walk on at UGA and bolster any weaknesses in key positions of need. The walkon program is already a good one at UGA, make it a great one. Part of the problem is recruiting has become a big entertainment outlet for these high school players and they are taking advantage of all the whoopola that goes to unofficial and official visits and some are waiting to signing day in February to commit which can make or break a recruting class if just a few players choose a different school. The NCAA should consider setting up a commission and reviewing past studies as well as new ideas as to how to bring some sanity back to recruiting so that it does not take so much money and coaches time being taken away from the program.

ga gator – Long story. That was in ‘66; I was on the 2-summer, 6 weeks per program. 2nd summer was to be at Mainside. I made the mistake of transferring schools the Fall after Camp Upsher, and I ended up with to few credits to make the projected graduation date. Ticked me off, as I graduated 4th in the platoon. I lost my deferment and got my draft notice 2 weeks later. (Earlier, in the spring, I got my draft notice *while I was a LCpl in the USMCR*!) Those were pre-lottery days. I had the opportunity to go to Parris Island for boot camp and then (most likely, no guarantee) back to OCS, but I got talked into Navy Nuclear Power School and served 7 years in submarines. I still love the Marine Corps.

I can’t believe that McGarity signed off on these so called “changes”. Richt saying he is going to work harder is not making changes. I thought McGarity being at UF was supposed to know what a championship program looks like. This is the big plan these two genuises came up with? Richt is going to do less administrative work and this is going to make us national champions?
Or possibly McGarity is smarter than we think and he is just allowing Richt to hang himself because deep down he wants a new coach. He is being diplomatic and not wanting to fire Richt since he has only been on the job for about 4 months. He allows Richt to keep all of his below average coaches because he knows the current set up will surely fail. I hope this is the case because anything else would mean McGarity is an idiot.

Richt’s a good human being(yeah, yeah, yeah)but a joke of a coach. For $2.8 mil a year he should be calling the plays again, based on consequences since around the time he announced he no longer would. Ironically that’s about the time his salary spiked. I thought that was Richt’s forte play calling. Although he wimps against Florida and always has, against everyone else, he was good against when he was play calling. Its like Richt thinks he’s now above play calling. Plenty of respected coaches want to have that honor, including Spurrier, and wouldn’t delegate that to anyone. When McGarity sits down with him maybe he should strongly tell Richt, show some life and also I want you to start calling the plays. Ain’t gonna happen any more than any McGarity-Richt conversation will happen about anything beneficial to winning football and demanding he beat Florida.

David Granger, why do you say that Mark Richt has helped Georgia? He’s run the wheels off the wagon and our beloved football team is the laughing stock of the entire country.
He has fleeced the UGA out of about 30 million dollars over the past ten years without earning it. This equates to about $1000 for every student at UGA,
He has allowed a large number of highly recruited football players to atrophy and not reach their potential, and has not provided them any structure or leadership that would have helped them pass their grades and avoid getting arrested.

They deserved a top 25 rank only because of that fact. Don’t act like UCF was a top 25 team at any point in the year.

So, we couldn’t score a touchdown against UCF becuase Mark Richt has been too busy. CMR wants to study trends…in other words, study people who know what they are doing and copy them, as opposed to being a creative trend setter. He’s toast in 2012 and I could care less. For all that watched the TCU game, did you catch at the end- when some TCU players were going to give Coach Patterson a early gatorade bath? He turned around and said this game is not over yet. The reaction from the players was a “Yes sir, coach” Do you see this from our current situation? I think not and would be on the phone with TCU wanting to talk to Gary immediately. Can you imagine what he could do with the talent Ga has.

I personally am glad to see a new AD. I heard too many comments about the former AD that led me to believe that he was less than fully supportive of the football program in general, and CMR in particular. Some of his decisions had the less than desired effect. Let’s hope that this past year was an abberation and that CMR can get the program turned around and headed in the right direction.

I think Mal Moore, the AD at Alabama sees the writing on the wall concerning Richt. Alabama just gave Kirby Smart another $200,000 pay raise for the 2011 season (grand total of $850,000). That’s a little love note saying “Please don’t go back to UGA when they fire RIcht.”

Why would anybody want to coach UGA? I am not being mean. Name 1 UGA head coach that got another good job after coaching UGA? Griffith, Vince Dooley was moved to UGA AD then forced out, Goff, & Donnan. Now, add Richt. Who would want to coach UGA unless they want to end their career at UGA or have UGA end their career. UGA gets too much talent, has all the money, and the facilities to win the SEC & a shot at the MNC, but it doesn’t. UGA fans expect more and when they don’t get it the coach gets gone. Other coaches know if you go to UGA you have to win or you are gone, but if you are a good coach at UGA you SHOULD win. UGA has become a career ender. UGA is not a stepping stone but a Head Stone.

I really haven’t seen anything that CMR said that indicates a change. Didn’t he say at the start of this season he was getting more involved with the offense. Who knows for sure who was calling the plays him or Bobo. Maybe whay he needs to do is loosen up on Bobo and Grantham and let them run the offense and defense. I think most would agree that Granthams style toned down after the first game this year and the defense went down hill from there. The head coach has to set the tone. Maybe we as fans have been looking at things wrong. Every body called for Willie’s head until he got canned. But under Bob Stoops he seems to be striving. I haven’t seen any negative reports about him coming the Oklahoma folks. In my opinion CMR should meet with Bobo and Grantham in a manner that he does not need to tell them he is not a happy camper but in a manner where they know well before the even get near his office. He should levy on them the requirement to show him why this team ended the season where they did and what they were going to do to fix it. After he gets there input then he can deside if there plan would work or if he needs to replace them.

The trend coach is what Florida, Bama, Auburn, Mississippi State and others have been doing. Here is what is troubling about all those comments…excited, focus of football, trends, and etc. If I am standing 53 yards on the opposing sideline, I’d think I could see the trend. I do not think I could be that stupid, lazy, and stubborn. And above all I would learn to guard my comments a little better.
Here is some advice. Talk less to the press and at gatherings. Circle your staff and team. Do not use gimmicks anymore. Have every coach attend the S&C. Eat what they eat. Study and read what they do coaches too. Do not fret over 5 star recruits. You had some and they do not seem to pan out or they jump ship to the pros. Go find a Green and Pollack. Smart, hard working kids. Kids that want to play for you and the team. Recruit no kid who is about himself. If he is there now he will be in every game here after. How times have we seen coaches and staffs recruit kids no one heard of and they beat teams they should not. Good solid players that you get ready mentally and physically. One thing your team needs to do is run alot more and they need to do a lot more LSAs. Also put all players and coaches off limits for the next 11 months. Now I’d sit down and review every D and player in the SEC and I’d devise sets and schemes to attack every onepf them. Boise is big, but I’d make it my test run for my new offense [that means no plays at G day and every practice til Boise is closed]. I’d be willing to give that game up to start hot in the East conference. Conference wins are it. In every game I would put the points up and never let up. I’d have my offense ready to run 85 plus plays a game. You did 70 in Memphis…but where was the production. I let every player on scholarship know it will be taken away if they did not perform very well. But I’d make my offense lethal and something that fans love to see. but opposing teams dread.

Sorry, I just don’t feel like this will get any better next year.Keeping Bobo is a joke and keeping Richt is a joke. Damon Evans wanted to win and he knew that Richt wasn’t getting the job done. Yes, if he was still the AD, Richt would be gone. Evans wanted UGA to be a national name like Fla., Ala., USC., Ohio St. and Texas. He wanted to take the program to a higher level and I do believe he would have made the right hire. I cannot help his personal actions but he made a great hire in Mark Fox. To get to the top you have to have top notch coaches and players and we have some players but the coaches need to be replaced. As long as we continue to settle for subpar coaching, that’s what we will get. The whole team needs to play faster, we need to be stronger and more physical and more creative on both sides of the ball. The OC is too predictable and cannot devise any plays to get the ball in the hands of or playmakers and cannot just recruit QBs. There is more to the offense than just QBs. Our RBs are not even mediocre and we cannot get a top one to commit. This is going to get worse before it gets better. I hope the JUCO NT Jenkins commits to us because if he he doesn’t we are in trouble again next year.

Top Recruit, I agree with you, but he came from Fla. St. and our offense should look the way theirs did 13 years ago but, maybe he really wasn’t running the show, maybe it was Bowdon. I’ve been looking for that for ten years and still haven’t seen it happen. Looks like the coaches need to take a lesson in preparation, mental and physical toughness, strength and conditioning and need to earn their paychecks.

Richt and his staff have not forgotten how to coach. That is a fact.
Our problem over the last 4 years is RECRUITING and S&C. We are not getting the type of big physical players that can out play our opponents in the trenches. It all starts up front. If you’re not winning the LOS it doesn’t matter how many Stafford’s, Moreno’s, Green’s you have… by the end of the game you’ll lose if you can’t control the opposing line.
McGarity is off to a good start in suggesting we replace Van H. as our S&C coach. The next step is to help Richt hire a recruiting guru and give that person the budget to focus solely on recruiting. I’ve never understood how a person can lead recruiting and still be a full-time coach. Garner needs to focus on coaching his DL, not on recruiting.
Clemson fired their top recruiter
January 6th, 2011

The Clemson head recruiter was just fired. He was hot on Florida kids and also was also the O co ordinator, I believe. His boss has held the head job for 1.5 years and he already has fired two assistants but Richt keeps on with his prayer group buddies. Madness this is.
UGA will be fine in two or three years. We are stuck with Richt because of his contract and the world knows it. We have no choice …………….try to allow him to right the ship and come 2011 December, he either resigns or he is fired. He will resign.
I have seen this with all of UGA’s coaches including Dooley in the early 70s and late 70s and he made strides because he knew that he had too. Goff and Donnan and now Richt. They all had their chances to win big with quality facilities, and resources. These three clowns failed in the NC endeavor. Oh well.

I really wish Richt would bring back the hurry up offense he used to run with David Green, you would think with our simplistic offense that we shouldnt even need a huddle! Bobo offense is just to vanilla
Now for the defense Grantham came in and said something to the effect of QB’s won’t know where the next blitz is coming from, but every game our blitz can be seen from a mile away. Last thing is our players never learn from their mistakes (DAMN WHEEL ROUTE, etc..) is that coaching or just dumbass players?

I’m always so surprised when reading comments by some of the self professed experts on college football… Coaches are limited in the amount of time they can be with the players. That goes for strength and conditioning too!
Here is the funniest thing I read in a long time…
“Go find a Green and Pollack. Smart, hard working kids. Kids that want to play for you and the team.”
This is thing that will always keep Georgia and their fans lost in the wilderness… Look at your opponents, now name more than 4 top line players on each of them who meet the criteria that you put on yourself? And for heaven sake, it is David Greene! You people are always throwing his name around and you can’t even spell it! For every Smart, who by the way only had winning an Outback Bowl as the highlight of his playing career, there was a Champ Bailey who was a star and played his heart out for your institution… For every Greene, there was someone like Hines Ward who did everything for your institution… And for everyone like Pollack, there was a Boss Bailey who brought it every single day he was in Athens. Still, it is funny is funny who you point out as the type of player you want as the face and personality of UGA football…
Today is the 50th anniversary of the most important day in higher education in this State. Sad thing is most of you don’t even know of it…

Do not think Pollack and Greene were high profile recruits like Ward and Bailey. Posted at midnight and did not proof the comments, JSS. The point is you do not need to have all [or a top 10 class] the media / recruiting services players to have a successful program. Ward, Bailey, Greene, and Pollack were very good players. Ward still is and is a favorite. And Smart, he like Ward, played on one of the few teams to beat the Gators. But for me Greene and Pollack had some quality plays…game changers. Those are the players that are not always your 4 or 5 star players. I simply used those as examples, but then JSS, like most, have thin skin and are an elitist.

Saw Auburn’s game against UT. Saw MSU against LSU. Those games convinced me that [using the words of CMR] “they were very close”. Now run out to the rivals list for MSU. Do you notice how many “NRs” they have listed and the rankings of any ranked recruit. Same way last year. They look for a certain type of player and coach them up. I saw South Panola HS play, the # team in HS, how many of those kids do they have. Donnan saw “players”. Not sure CMR and staff does.

CMR needs to own up to his responsilibilties as Head Coach. If he see’s the offence is not up to par then step the hell in and do something about it, any other COACH will. If that is his specialty then USE IT!!! Our program has been slipping for seasons now, and reality has to set in at some point. Recruiting is down also, these younger kids see programs like Ala, Aub, LSU, and Fla so they leave the state.. They want to be winners not a wait until next season team! Hell I think we need a motivational coach as well because they lack enthusiam at times…. I truly hope this 3-4 works better this year, I can understand the playes had to adjust but giving up all of those rushing yards is embarrissing. Our running backs compared to the elite programs in the FBS is sub par as well… The enire organazation needs to take a look in the mirror and BULLDOG UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Take PRIDE in what you are doing and let it show in the Classroom, off season, weight room, and especially on Saturday morings on the FIELD.. Man the HELL up DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, I think its just a lot of talk, CMR doesn’t have the “killer instinct” needed to compete in the SEC
