LIVE from Liberty Bowl: A.J. and Russ are in, Uga is out
Russ is in the house! (Literally.) He's got his bowl game face on.
MEMPHIS — Welcome to the end of Georgia’s season. I know. The Liberty Bowl is not what you were expecting, and neither is the modest goal of trying to finish with a winning record. But Memphis is a nice place, particularly if you’re into barbecue, and I can recommend the ribs at the “Germantown Commissary” (albeit not a BBQ-sounding place).
I would’ve saved the bones for Uga VIII but, alas, he has a tummy ache and didn’t make the trip from his palace in Savannah. At least, that’s the word that the Seiler family is putting out. I’m more inclined to think Uga just didn’t want to make his bowl debut at a game so beneath his standards, particularly since he came in as such a highly touted recruit.
Or maybe Uga’’s just academically ineligible like Caleb King. Like everybody else, he lost interest after the Florida game. Like King, he missed five “academic-related appointments” (obedience school).
So, we have this significant change the depth chart: Russ, The Temporary Mascot, is back!
Don’t, worry. Russ has more bowl experience than Aaron Murray: He won the Independence Bowl last year. Come to think of it, maybe Georgia Tech should’ve borrowed Russ last week for its game in Shreveport. Does Russ get holiday pay for this? The poor mutt was probably happy in retirement, playing shuffleboard at the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm.
But this could be good news for the Dogs. Russ is only 4-4. But he’s 1-0 in bowls and won his last game over Tennessee. Also, Georgia is 3-1 when both Russ and A.J. Green are in the lineup. (Kudos to newshound Tim Tucker for supplying me with that statistic.)
Meanwhile, back here on earth . . .
A loss would give Georgia (6-6) its first losing season since 1996, when the Dogs went 5-6 in Jim Donnan’s first year. Ironically, the last time the Dogs lost in the Independence Bowl was to North Carolina State, which had Donnan at quarterback, in 1967.
Here’s the good news: Donnan is not in Memphis.
But do I think Georgia will lose this game? No. Central Florida will be able to put some points up but in the end I don’t think George O’Leary’s defense will have an answer for Murray-to-Green.
Take one last look at Green because this likely will be his final collegiate game. He most likely will be a top-five NFL pick and I don’t believe the threat of an NFL lockout has any significance. Remember, any college junior who comes out can always take a nice little $1 million loan from an agent to hold him over, just in case the league doesn’t play next season. The potential of a lockout affects mostly mid-to-low-round picks, not first-rounders.
As for the significance of this game, it’s obviously a much bigger deal if the Dogs lose (panic!) than if they win (expected). But going 6-2 after a 1-4 start would be a slight boost going into the offseason.
Not sure what kind of crowd this game will draw but I’m guessing not great. The last report was that the Dogs had sold only 5,000 tickets for this game and gave about 1,000 tickets away for staff and families. That would still leave about 4,000 from its 10,000-ticket allotment.

The Bulldogs have won 26 times in the post season. Only Alabama, Southern Cal and Penn St. have won more bowl games than Georgia.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?
As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.
Will it never end? Apparently not while Saint Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

Dawg A — Here’s a general rule to follow: Every Division 1 team has talent. But what tends to happen in matchups like this is the talent runs through the depth chart at bigger programs like Georgia but it drops off after the starters at smaller programs like Central Florida. That’s why sometimes you see smaller programs hang for a while but wear down later in the game.

Just a comment on another post – Derek Dooley has to learn to control his emotions on the sidelines and keep his players under control on the field. The personal foul penalties last night killed Tennessee’s chance at a win. And it’s sad that they are trying to anoint the freshman QB as the next best thing since sliced bread, because his 4 wins were against mediocre teams and he let his emotions get too high. When he failed, it hurt that much more.

Let me field that question on the grass as I am much closer to the ground than Jeff. The grass won’t be a factor today. I am concerned that we are short on running backs again today. Those boys may run this state but I don’t think so. I am concerned about Big Bad Bruce, though, as he has been running into furniture all week and is suffering from excessive slobber. That can be said about a lot of Georgia fans, too. There’s more to do in Memphis than in Shreveport so I consider this an upgrade. Who would have thought I’d be back so soon!

Jeff, looks like poor little Clemson is being pushed around by those limited-talent, small-program guys from USF. I remember quite distinctly when “USF” was three buildings in the middle of acres and acres of nowhere near Busch Gardens in Temple Terrace. You would drive on their entrance road for miles before seeing, off in the distance, 3 little buildings which housed the total of the “University”. This was in about 1960.
Don’t know if UCF has much, but I think they could beat UGA if Green gets hurt.
On the TN game last night, I still don’t understand why NC got so little penalty for having 15 or 16 men on the field (should be 5 yards per man on the next down, not the next to the next down!). TN didn’t play well enough to win, but neither did NC.

Beating Tech yet again is always a good way to end the year, but it takes some of the fun out of it when it’s coupled with the phrase, “to become bowl eligible.” The end result? A UGA blog entitled “LIVE from Liberty Bowl.” New Years Eve in Memphis! Man oh man, that’s what those blue chip recruits want to look forward to. [sorry, request for sarcasm font denied]. If they Dawgs win by 30 and act like they’ve been there before, I’ll feel better about the whole thing. Looking toward next year, Green’s gone and our running backs are mediocre at best. We went to an auto parts store today and everybody with a valid drivers license came out with a gift (that was about 8 of us). I don’t know why these players can’t keep a license. Anyway, they had somebody follow the running backs around the store (just in case). All in all it was a pretty good experience. I think the Sugar Bowl is overrated. Bet they don’t tour any parts stores.

I’m a ‘79 alum, went to every game in ‘80 including the Miracle On Duval Street and The NCC Game in N.O. That was quite possibly The Greatest Post Season Defensive Game every played. Dooley was a Master.

We are where we deserve to be. We have gotten worse and worse each year since our mini run and with the recruits we have lined up it will not be any better in 2011. We play to the level of our competition.
Losing our seniors and a couple of stud of juniors we will be lucky to win 6 or 7 games in 2011. Our only consolation is the fact that the rest of the east will be just as bad or us.

Today’s Game. The going for the field goal with 4″ to go at the two says it all for me. We will NEVER win a NC with Coach Richt. He has the proven personality of an accountant. Always worried, always too worried to WIN. His success in the past, in my opinion, is in spite of his personality rather than because of it. Plus, having one of the premier recruiting states in the country. Heck of a nice guy, but not the personality of a NC champion head coach. We do need a change. By the way, Coach Bobo, should look elsewhere for a job. Searles, would make a threesome. Our line does not perform on a national level. UGA should expect better.

I’m proud of UGA and that is why I (and most others) refuse to accept deteriorating performance by this coaching staff.
Some of us began blogging about a developing problem with benches filled with great talent and missed opportunities year after year.
Frankly, I’d have unloaded Bobo at the same time as Martinez was dropped. Richt has allowed Bobo to call the Offensive shots to the demise of this team. Our players cannot tackle or block. A blind man can see it. This is basic football. And we can’t play it.
Richt is the owner of this entire problem. He’s had more than enough time to fix it and has not. This bowl game is one of the lowest points in UGA Football History.

What kind of message is Mark Richt sending his players and fans by kicking a field goal on 4th and inches at the goal line during a bowl game? If I am a player will that motivate me? If I am a fan will that promote confidence in my team; especially the coaching staff? Mark Richt said that he would calm down his quarterback before they open it up on the offense. What about handing the ball to Murray and say “I believe in you. You have proved yourself this season. Now calm down and go out there and win this game for us!” You don’t take away his confidence but you promote your qb’s confidence by believing in him. Plus, what about addressing the offensive line which is allowing pressure on our qb. Just sayin. Come on Mark Richt.

3. Red shirting K Moreno…Look at what Lattimore has done at USC, Moreno was just as good AND a 1st round NFL pick
4. Onside kick against UF last year?!
5. Deciding to not go with live tackling dills 2 years in a row, which we were bottom of the barrel in the SEC for missed tackles and stops on 3rd down
6. Not starting DJ Schocley against UF in 2005 when a he had a slight leg injury…The ONLY game we lost that year(by 7) AND DJ started the next week just fine(2005 SEC champs)

Richt won early in his UGA career with Donnan coached players and recruits. When those players, recruits and van Gorder left, that was the end of Richt’s winning ways. When we got him he was supposed to be able to coach at a NC level. He’s had great recruiting classes and hasn’t been able to deliver. He just isn’t very bright. Hell, he’s a dunce.

I wonder if any of the books about UGA football include the perspective of someone speaking for the late Jan Kemp? The perspective that “student” athletes like Lindsay Scott were playing years without taking college level courses? That the proudest moment of the football program was earned by players who never earned a single college credit?
Dawgtards love to return to 1980, but their memories are really short when it comes to remembering an earthshaking event that happened a few years later that showed the world what a joke UGA athletes were and what a scam artist their beloved Vince Dooley was (and is). So for all those dawgtards with short memories or who think their athletes are actually taking real courses and trying to graduate, here’s the quote that broke the trial wide open and showed what a slimeball Dooley is:

Keep your eyes on #27 from UCF. I kept noticing some mouthy, showboating jerk on kick off and following Coach O’Leary around on the sidelines trying to make sure he stays within camera view. The last kickoff, he was smacking at A J Green. I checked out the roster and found out is is none other than Tucker’s own J. Davis. I see nothing has changed with his attitude, which is probably the reason he doesn’t play often. He’s the epitome of Hitler syndrome. One thing I can say about South Carolina, we may be hit and miss, but we don’t sign people whose attitudes are taller than their bodies.

Mark Richt offenses remind me of Mike Shanahan’s offense’s, both coaches are totally different character wise. Neither guy is the offensive guru that they are touted to be & both look like they are afraid of their defensive coordinators. The problems at UGA are long indeed. I am a huge Dawg fan, but i have to call a duck a duck when i see one. Ga may come back and win this one, but my example is clear. Why after scoring so many points and being one of the most efficient QB’s in the nation would you allow your QB to wear gloves on both hands? Why would you allow any change at all to your single good offensive spark? Once again the coaching staff fails the fans at UGA. These are amateur atheletes, you control every aspect of thier life in athletics. Why when Aaron Murray asked to make the change did you not laugh in his face and ask him why you would want to change. Instead our coaches play the “best friend” role and allow it. Disgusting. No dicipline, lack of coaching, poor results. Time for a major change at UGA.
