Charlie Weis was unsuccessful as a head coach but he always has been solid as an offensive coordinator.
If Florida’s hiring of former Georgia safety Will Muschamp as its head coach stunned Bulldogs fans, try this: Muschamp’s offensive coordinator may be Charlie Weis.
Yes, that Charlie Weis.
Long time Gainesville Sun writer Pat Dooley and ESPN’s Chris Mortensen — both of whom are as solid as they come — are reporting that Weis could be headed to the Gators to run the offense. The former Notre Dame head coach and New England assistant currently is the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Dooley said on his radio show, WYBC-FM in Gainesville: “In terms of Florida’s offensive coordinator, if you’re driving in your car, I want you to pull over. When I say this, you’re going to freak out. I think this is going to happen but I don’t know that it’s going to happen. That’s why you won’t see it in the paper [Gainesville Sun] tomorrow unless I get another source on it. I think your new offensive coordinator for the Florida Gators is going to be Charlie Weis. I’ve heard this from some people in the NFL, that that’s going on. My first reaction was, ‘are you kidding me, why would Charlie Weis leave Kansas City to go to Florida in the same job’? … Wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense.”
Here’s an audio link, via SportsByBrooks: http://media.sportsbybrooks.com/2010/12/weis.mov
Mortensen has filed a story on ESPN.com with the headline: “Sources: Gators pursuing Charlie Weis.” It includes this: “Weis is expected to take the job, but no firm agreement is in place.”
Kansas City is 10-5 and headed to the NFL playoffs.
This would be a grand slam for Muschamp, who is changing Florida from a spread offense to more of a pro style. Weis was dreadful as a head coach at Notre Dame but he has long been one of the game’s best play-callers and is excellent at developing quarterbacks.
We’ll update you with more as the story develops, but what are your early thoughts on this?
♦
UPDATE: Chiefs coach Todd Haley, asked about the Weis reports, said: “It would be news to me. I have no idea. That’s not something I would talk about right now. Our focus is on the Oakland Raiders. At a later date, if something comes up, I surely will talk about it.”

That should about do it for spread-type offenses in the SEC. I would venture a guess that there will be no full-bore spread offenses in the league five years hence. The novelty has begun to wear off, methinks.

From an offensive personnel standpoint, bringing him in is going to make quite a few of those Urban-type recruits – all around athletes that tend to excel in the spread – a lot harder to work into a more traditional, pro-style offense. Also worth pondering how many of said athletes may decide to transfer to another school like Missy State where they do still run that offense.

@ Joey – I don’t think its just a spread thing, offenses and defenses run in cycles. I think the spread isn’t going anywhere too soon. I just think teams will mix it in with a little more pro style offense. It doesn’t make since to be in the spread when its 4 and inches! Got my Gators in trouble a few times. Line up in the I sometimes and play smash mouth on 3rd and short or 4 and short.

Yes, offenses (moreso than defenses) run in cycles, but the spread offense is clearly a fad type offensive scheme that will probably go the way of the old veer offense that was so “it” in the 60’s and 70’s. Teams might mix it in here and there with whatever else they might do, but I don’t think you’ll find too many that use it full time ala UF during the Urban era.

Obviously, two questions. First, why? Second, why college?
You offer a reason for the why: he doesn’t like being beholden to Haley.
As the college versus pros, if this is how it works out, I guess it mean he wants another shot at being a college head coach someday. Proving he can work with college kids would be a good start.
But still. If there’s that much tension in Kansas City, why haven’t we heard about it before now, 17 weeks into the NFL season?

I didn’t say it would disappear overnight. I said it would probably lose its popularity over time and go the way of other fad offenses historically. Count the number of quarterbacks playing on Sundays that came from pure spread offenses. I can only think of one. That ain’t gonna change much either in the future.

For Charlie Weis to make a path back to being a head coach having a Florida team running his offense competing for a national championship and playing every week on national tv is better than coaching the offense on a 10-5 team that is NEVER on television and has only a few bright spots and mostly marginal talent. KC is 10-5 because its a well coached team not because its stacked with talent.

Weis’ offenses looked good against the rust belt creampuffs that he played every year at Notre Dame. Remember his only foray against an SEC team in the Sugar Bowl one year? A total bloodbath. Granted, he’ll have more talent at Florida than he had at Notre Dame though.

Nobody really knows what Weiss’ motivations are at this time in his career. He might be forced out due to Haley’s close ties with Josh McDaniels. He has a special needs son and maybe settling in a nice southern college town with a great hospital with slightly less pressure than the NFL would be what he needs right now. Money shouldn’t be a problem. His ship has sailed as far as being a head coach, so becoming the offensive architect for a defensive minded coach doesn’t seem very far-fetched. For UGA fans that laughingly say it would be great, better think again. His offenses at Notre Dame were never the problem.

If this is true I’m sure the media will go ahead and hand Florida the next 3 SEC titles and at least one national title, but a bunch of big rock star names will not guarantee success for them. Has Muschamp ever worked with Weis? I don’t think so. Who knows what will happen. There could be a clash of personalities, differences in philosophy, etc. Or they could win 6 national titles in a row. We just don’t know. One thing is for sure though. The hype will be through the roof.

If these rumors are indeed true, Weiss may have reasons that he will never reveal to the public for thinking about a return to the college level. Remember….Meyer was making over 4 mil a year at Florida. Muschamp…will make less than 2 mil. That leaves somewhere between 1 and 2 mil a year on the table to hire Charile Weiss as the OC….and that would be more than he makes as the OC for KC or anywhere else in the NFL….and he is still being paid 4 mil a year by Notre Dame….and I am sure he would be named…Assisant Head Coach as well. I think Charlie is foaming at the mouth to coach the type athletes that are at and will be coming to play offense at Florida.
Concerning wide receivers transferring from Florida…Hines, Dunkley, Thompson, Ali, Patton, Hammond, and others…the current top 5 WR for next year…have all said they look forward to playing in a pro style offense. I don’t see any of them leaving….and I see a lot of top WR recruits….like Benjamin out of Miami….giving the Gators more of a look if Weiss comes….and that is a big IF at the moment.
But this would explain why Muschamp has not been seen at Florida practices the last few days.
Kirby Smart…don’t think that is happening…but it would not surprise me if he came with this kid of news. Florida could be in the process of assembling the best coaching staff in the country.
Yep….the Gators are DONE…and will NEVER beat the Dogs under the great Aaron Murray…AGAIN.

I do question Weiss because he isn’t the most personable coach in America….how will he get along with the energetic personality of Muschamp? I don’t see him hitting the road and being a big time recruiter at Florida. But the man can coach up QBs (big challenge if he coaches Brantley) and call offensive plays…no doubt. I certainly have excitment about this news…but also some slight reservations about how he will fit in at Florida.

Charlie doesn’t need the money with the Notre Dame payout, so that won’t be the an issue. So why would he leave the NFL (in Kansas City) and go back to the college setting (in Gainesville)? Maybe it has something to do with his ego, maybe it has something to do with his family, maybe he just decided he really liked working with the kids coming out of high school rather than “pros”.
Regardless of his rationale, it sounds like it’s not a done deal yet so I wouldn’t get too worked up either way…

Give me a break! Isn’t this the same WIll Muschamp that Texas Tech spanked tow years ago? The same DC that Alabama embarassed last year? The same DC whose defense was pushed all over the field this season to sport a losing record.
Weiss? New England was successful because of Belichick’s defense and the best QB since Joe Montana. Weiss did nothing with Brady and he did even less at Notre Dame.

Recruiting to Florida is not the same as recruiting to Notre Dame. Given the in-state talent, I don’t think you have to be a world-class recruiter to get talent in Gainesville. You have to think that some of Weiss’s arrogance is gone after the humbling in South Bend. Some coaches are great coordinators but not head coaching material. Sounds like Weiss to me.

Um, lessee…..You have a coach here in Athens who has been @ the helm of the Bulldogs for a decade. This yr. he guided his team to a 6-7 season, that included a bowl loss to Central Florida. His record against Tech is pretty good, if you don’t consider the last couple of years, but the Gators have owned him.
Randy Shannon in Miami is FIRED in 4 years after bringing honor to a once undisciplined, low graduating rate football team. Oh, btw, they (Miami) were losing when he took over……
Please, can anyone see anything wrong with this picture? If you’re a honest and fair American, please respond. If you just want attention, don’t bother.
As for Randy, I think Mack Brown (Texas) will convince him to become the next D coordinator for his team.

The media circus in Gainseville will not produce wins like Myer and Spurrier. I give Muschamp/Weis 3 years tops! Normally good news for all Georgia fans but we suck so bad right now I’m not sure we can capitolize

As a 50 yard line ticket holder and booster to the University of Florida, I say PUKE. Goodyear already has the blimp at the games most Saturdays and we sure don’t need another one crushing the grass @ Florida Field. Urban needs to coach today and leave. Take your affinity for all things Notre Dame and shove it.

Sorry Ga, but I think it is my fault that the Dawgs are in a downhill spiral. I have been a lifelong Gator, but never a GA hater. Weird, huh? Since my oldest son graduated from GA, I have honestly cheered for them in every game but one. Since I really begin to cheer for the Dawgs, they have consistently gotten worse. A side note, I moved to the beautiful state of Georgia in 1990, and brought the Gator attack with me. A guy named Spurrier helped me. I would lkie the Dawgs to go 7-1 every year in the SEC.

Weis headed for the SEC will be the beginning of the end for FL and the SEC dominance in football. I’m surprised the fatty is still coaching. You’ve got to be kidding.

SOOOOOOOOO glad I’m not a dog fan. Almost feel sorry for the following AH’s who have not only been forced to swallow more than their pride but also seem to have taken their little sacks and disappeared. Hahahahaha.

Several outlets are reporting that Weis will be introduced as Florida’s offense coordinator on Monday.
From the Associated Press:
Charlie Weis has accepted an offer to become the offensive coordinator at Florida, according to a story by The Associated Press. An announcement is expected Monday.
The hiring of Weis, a former offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots and currently with the Kansas City Chiefs, fills the desire of new Gators coach Will Muschamp to install a pro-style offense next season. Weis will stay with the team through the playoffs, which begin next weekend. Weis won’t go on the road recruiting at least for a week, but he will be to call recruits.
The move seems surprising given that impact Weis has had on the Chiefs in his one season with the team. Matt Cassel has thrown for 27 touchdowns and just five interceptions and the running game leads the NFL in yards per game.
Weis was coach of Notre Dame for five seasons from 2005-09 and had a 35-27 record with two BCS bowl appearances while tutoring Brady Quinn and Jimmy Clausen.

Turn out the lights for the poodles in Jax. Not only will the Gators continue to beat down the dawgs, now their OC will eat their lunch.
Already offensive prospects across the South are trying to give UF another look and angling for a visit with the new armageddon that is reforming.
And the poodles must console themselves with a Bobo and a blivetous DC who has no clue about an approach to college defense.
