Forget loss — defense proves Falcons ready for playoffs

John Abraham has 13 sacks -- and added a rare interception Monday -- to lead Falcons' defense.

John Abraham has 13 sacks (and added an interception Monday) to lead Falcons' defense.

FLOWERY BRANCH – For the first time in more than 10 weeks, it was the day after a Falcons’ loss Tuesday.

Cleansing breath.

Who knew this season would bring about such an adjustment period?

As you look to get grounded again, here’s your focal point: A three-point loss to the defending Super Bowl champions who probably were just a little more desperate for a victory probably doesn’t constitute a collapse. Nor does it alter the power structure in the NFL’s playoff field. As coach Mike Smith said again Tuesday, the day after a 17-14 loss to New Orleans: “There’s 15 other teams [in the NFC] who would love to trade places with us,” and I think we can assume that includes the next opponent, Carolina (2-13).

Truth is, we know now pretty much what we knew before Monday’s loss. The Falcons and Saints are dead even. It’s not bad to be dead even with the defending champions. Also, Philadelphia, Chicago, Green Bay are all conference threats to get to the Super Bowl — not a revelation. And in games when Michael Turner (2.8 yards per carry) can’t run, the Falcons’ offense tends to shut down.

But the loss to the Saints wasn’t a horrible sign for the future. The Falcons can still achieve all of their regular-season goals — NFC South title, first-round bye, No. 1 seed — just by beating Carolina, and that game plan usually entails little more than having a pulse.

In fact, notwithstanding Smith’s position that “nothing good ever comes from losing,” there were some fairly significant positives. Some of the areas that we questioned about this team might have been answered, particularly on defense. Offense was a problem Monday, but occasional criticism of offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey notwithstanding, scoring generally hasn’t been the problem this season (the Falcons are fifth in points: 25.5).

Sounds strange. But I feel better about this team now than I did before the New Orleans game.

Consider:

– Despite the Saints’ 90-yard touchdown drive in the final minutes Monday, the Falcons’ secondary has been strong. They make plays. Pass defense figured to be an issue this season. But with the meteoric rise of Brent Grimes and the short learning curve of safety William Moore, it’s now a strength. Surprisingly, the biggest question mark is $57 million cornerback Dunta Robinson. Here’s your stat of the year: Four linemen — John Abraham, Chauncey Davis, Jonathan Babineaux, Kroy Biermann — each have more interceptions (1) than Robinson (0). (Smith said Robinson is “coming along” after missing training camp with a hamstring strain. Can you still be “coming along” in Week 16?)

– The pass rush pressured New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees all game (though he was sacked only once because of eight missed opportunities, when pass rushers overran him). Abraham and Babineaux in particular have been strong. Abraham has 13 sacks, the second-highest total of his career. There is no better sign for the Falcons’ postseason fortunes than Abraham.

– Monday’s game was extremely winnable. Two Falcons fumbles led to one New Orleans touchdown and prevented an Atlanta touchdown. Michael Jenkins dropped a touchdown pass (albeit, drawing a pass-interference penalty in process).

Finally, there was the decision of coach Mike Smith to punt on fourth-and-six with 2:52 left, leading to the Saints running out the clock. Smith didn’t second-guess himself on that Tuesday, though he acknowledged that the Falcons’ defense (which allowed the Saints to get two first downs and run out the clock) might have been fatigued in that 90-yard drive: “We ended up playing 75 snaps on defense, and that’s a lot of snaps. In the average game, you’re playing 60.”

Some skeptics believed the Saints would expose the Falcons. They didn’t. Monday’s loss changes nothing. This team looks ready to take the next step.

Just don’t lose to Carolina.

I’m not panicking over this loss, but there have to be some adjustments on offense. Mike Mularkey’s play calling is going to be the death of us in the playoffs. What is it about him and his lack of creativity???? Why does he keep trying to run Michael Turner through holes that aren’t there? Why does he not have Matt Ryan take more deep shots down the field when we have the weapons to do so? He needs to call more games like the one he did against the Bengals. If we can combine that offensive output with the defensive effort from last night, we will be dangerous.

If the Falcons somehow lose on Sunday (and if history has taught us anything, it’s that Atlanta professional sports teams always fold in must-win games – Game 6 of the 95 WS is the only exception), they will almost certainly be one and done in the playoffs. Clearly they understood the importance of that game last night, and they made numerous blunders and mistakes, costing themselves a chance to rest key players. This season is quickly unraveling.

The offense was the worst I’ve seen it all year, we didn’t use Tony G at all to get those good 5 yard plays going, we only went long to Roddy a couple of times, and we KEPT on running the ball when nothing was there, putting us in 3rd and long situations over and over. The offense needs to be more aggressive, but the defense was spectacular against one of the most explosive offenses in the league. GO FALCONS!!

The Bears had clinched their division yet played with highly spirited and aggressive offensive game throwing the ball down field throughout and defeated a must win Jets team. The Falcons, still not having clinched their division, played with an offensive game plan as if they were defending a 30 point lead and trying to run out the clock.

The difference? Mike Martz versus Mike Mularkey as an offensive coordinator!

Throw in Mike Smith’s surrender call on 4th and 6th and you have a recipe for playoff failure looming in a few short weeks.

I’d turn all the play calling over to Matt Ryan–ALL of it!

And at least 4 games this season were extremely loseable.

You win some, you lose some… especially when you are a methodical, grind-it-out team like the Falcons and every game is close.

Grimes continues to impress, Abraham looks 7 years younger, Weems is still making plays on returns AND coverage. The O will be fine but the line needs to block because it’s hard to make positive yardage when someone is touching you 2 yards deep in your own backfield.

I, too, have been asking…”when is D. Robinson gonna show up?” Right now Robinson looks a bit like DeAngelo Hall, sans mouth & attitude.

Another good one Mr. Jeff Schultz…LMAO

So you and your fan base think the Saints are “dead even” …I really can’t stop laughing.

The Falcon’s defense pressured Drew Brees pretty much the entire game. Yet he still manage to complete 71% of his passes for 300+ yards.

Matty Ice, who was pressured very little by the Saints Defense only managed to complete 51% of his passes for 148 yards and 1 touchdown.

Turner the burner…LOL…held to 48 rushing yards…You next best rusher Matty Ice rushed for 26 yards.

The Saints who we all know don’t have much of a running game gave the ball to PT who out rushed your burner with 63 yards.

Drew Brees throws not one, but two interceptions (back to back) one of which turned into a 7 point gift to the Falcons turned around and drove his offense down the field 90 yards completing 7 of 7 passes for the game winning TD.

The Falcons benefited from 8 penalties called agaist the Saints for 92 yards and still couldn’t score no more than 7 of their own points.

You, Mr. Schultz and your fans can spin it anyway you like, but at their worse the Saints are a far superior team than the Falcons.

Falcons…one and done in the playoffs…take it to the bank!

Fumble on your own goal line, a penalty that took away a huge gain by White that also took away momentum, and a fumble near our own 20 yard line. And you all ONLY managed to win by 3??

Okay, now that I’m through sulking I offer this: I believe the Falcons will be more than okay. Three or four missed sacks notwithstanding, that defense impressed the @#$% out of me. That was “playoff” defense for sure and I’ve NEVER (well maybe back in the ‘04 season with that Patrick Kerney led D) seen them guys amp it up quite as good as they did last night. They play like that and the Iceman and the Burner get it back going and we’re definitely going places, most likely Dallas, Texas. They were due a bad game and now I think they got the refocusing gut punch they needed before there heads and mouth (this means YOU Roddy) got too big for their britches. Now all that is needed is to tune up and take out their frustrations on the Panthers, take a week off, and get ready to blast them Aints when it really matters- in the playoffs. GO FALCONS!!!

I will say this, it was an ok performance for the defense, not really big plays. Couple of stops early in the game, but unable to to Brees, later on. So no, i don’t believe they are playoff-ready as you say. Still was unable to consistently mount a pass rush to disrupt Brees timing in second half. I think it was offensive play-clalling that caused the loss. Nobody is scarced of our defense, we have to control the clock, its’ a new ball game when we are ahead, and now everyone knows that. Our defense is not that strong.

Shultz, really?! The D is playoff ready?? Whodat you pretty much nailed it. I have been saying all season that the Falcons are a good team but ain’t ready yet. They are a 10-6 team disguised as a 13 win team. They are an up and coming squad with some talent but also some glaring holes in the D (ahem, D. Robinson, LBers, FS). It’s a process Falcon fans and last night’s L is part of the journey. All teams have to go through it. The blueprint is simple…stop Turner, load up 8 in the box and make #2 beat you. If you don’t believe me ask Pburgh, Philly and now N.O. TB and Cleveland and Baltimore just couldn’t finish the deal. Matty Ice just hasn’t developed into that cold blood assassin yet. And you all wondered why the national media wouldn’t show you much love.

Najah D: “And at least 4 games this season were extremely loseable”… you are dead right, and i guess that is the way the league works. that is the difference between 10-6 and 13-3/14-2. even the patriots have several 3 point wins this year.

and that is why nobody builds on anything in the NFL. you win when you can, because the next year you are going to have a tougher schedule and you might not be so lucky with injuries.

but i agree the defense is getting better and that is a good thing entering the playoffs. but i think the offense has to be able to take a step forward when the running game gets shut down. there’s a fine line between staying with your game plan and becoming entrenched in something that isn’t working. you only get so many shots a game. i think smith deserves to be criticized for the end of the game last night. the falcons didn’t have to win the game, so the world wouldn’t have ended if they had played FOR THE WIN instead of playing percentages that were’nt going in their favor last night.
i don’t understand why ryan couldn’t find gonzalez or white more than he did. or get finneran in there. they are overrating michael jenkins and harry douglas. they are as apt to fail as to succeed.

We also fumbled the ball at the one, fumbled a snap early in the game and gave ya’ll good field position. Saints out gained us in yards by almost 200 yards and still you only beat us by 3. The worst outting of the year for our offense and still you only win by 3. drew brees threw the ball 49 times for 302 yards. So your offense clearly out played our offense but still you only win by 3. Sounds like the same excuses they gave yall when we beat yall in New Orleans. So dead even I could probably say slightly giving the edge to Atlanta. yall couldnt have played any better but yet and still you only win by 3. So talk all you want. You sound like a typical Saints fan. Dont want to except reality. You guys had 11 total yards in the 4th QTR. This mighty D I keep hearing about gave up 101 total yards to a RB who hasn’t played in several weeks. The miscues you saw your boys do last night are committed by inexperienced teams in pressure cooker situations. Tell Roddy to keep his 3 catches on the night mouth shut next time. Few if any running misdirectional running plays, screens or slant routes, quick shots. The offensive play selection was less than stellar. There is good talent there. I think for the offense the game was lost along the line of scrimmage. The Falcon’s offensive line could not create holes and the protection broke down too often hurrying up the QB’s throws. Fumble on the 1 yard line could have been the difference maker. Kudos to the Saints defense. The Falcon defense had to play most of the game. I was amazed that they hung in there as long as they did. If the Falcon defense had played offense maybe it would have been a runaway. LOL

Great game really enjoyed it. Now I know why its so hard to play in the Georgia Dome N.O Penalties (Number-Yards) 8 – 92, ATL Penalties (Number-Yards) 1 – 10? That is a huge difference. Several of those the announcers question the calls. Good luck guys hopefully we will meet down the line.

Clearly, the difference in the game was Drew Brees, an extremely confident and veteran QB with more experience than anyone in the league. In contrast, Matt Ryan is only 25 years old, in his 3rd year and will eventually surpass Brees, In spite of this huge disparity the Saints were able to win this game by only 3 points.

Not taking anything away from N.O. They played a great game. ATL, not so much

Good one Jeff- 41-41 I would say that’s about even. Given that if our defense hits Brees a couple of times that like Smitty said ” they were game changing opprotunites left on the field.” I live in Tampa, Fl by way of the Military, and what I heard leading up to the game on the stations like ESPN 1040 Raido, 620 the beast and 1010 Westwood was that the Falcons were due to lose a game and this one would be it however, consistantly all stations mentioned that if Atlanta was to lose that they probably are going to be in Dallas and Win. That’s respect if I haven’t heard any. I think that the lost puts a tremendous amount of fury along with refocus back into the Falcons because if they handle business this Sunday. Most impressive outing by the defense this year- aggressive, good game plan (missed lots of opportunities, but…) tackled well after catch most of the time, pressure all night. I am encouraged! Losses can humble you and refocus you. I think that defense answered some of my concerns last night. Bring the rematch on! It will take place in the Georgia Dome. No way Falcons take step back this week- too professional- from GM to Coach to players. The Eagles come to the dome during the playoffs and we have what appears

we are losing as a result of Vick’s heroics.

The biggest problem I see is the stubborn refusal to adjust when the running game isn’t working. In ‘08, Turner was able to bust through the line pretty much at will, and Smitty and Mularkey decided “That’s our identity.” Well other teams have caught on and Turner’s not the same back, the combination of which screams for adjustment against quality defenses. The weapons are there, but It’s not happening except when Ryan calls the plays. This is pretty obvious to everyone else; not sure why it isn’t to the coaching staff. It smacks of hubris.

However, in every other respect I really like the way this team is coming together, including most other things the coaching staff has been able to accomplish. We’ll learn as we go along, and I like our chances. The only thing bad about this loss is listening to ignorant Saints fans chirp; we’re still in control.

I do have 3 concerns.
1. Dunta “overpayed” Robinson. How many times did a wide receiver get a 5-10 yard reception on him?
2. If we blitz like we did more often, please teach Williams to aim at the Quarterback’s chest. How many missed opportunities did he have?
3. Why couldn’t our wide receivers create some gaps in the coverage?

It was hilarious listening to the sports-talk “experts” saying the Falcons are “inexperienced” and “not ready for prime time”…Jeeze, they lost a 3-point game to a 10-4 team with the league MVP at QB and a litany of mistakes. It’s the media doing what the media does, creating a story. If the Falcons had won 21-10 or 28-10 the radio gurus would have been pondering if the Falcons could beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl.

Bottom line, you have to like the odds of beating the Panthers, beating the Saints/Seahawks/Rams/Packers/Giants at home after two weeks to rest and prepare, and then beating the Bears/Eagles/Saints/Seahawks in an NFC championship game, especially if the visiting team has played two straight games in brutal weather and is worn down.

Jeff, best article I have read from you. Great points. As for the Falcon “Fans” who are crying that the sky is falling… Give me a break… We only lost by three points against the defending Superbowl champs… Yes, we made mistakes but it is better to lose now, then to lose in the playoffs. Would the victory been sweet? Yes, but it was a heck of a game. Who cares if we get national respect. This loss helps the team stay humble, and hungry… I could care less what the other people say. Why? Because that is what makes you a TRUE fan. To believe in your team, no matter if everyone else does not. I am in a job with a bunch of bandwagon Philly fans who came out of nowhere because of Vick… so I have to deal with their mouths everyday. It is ok though, because at the end of the day… the only games that matter are in the playoffs. PERIOD. Alright Falcons, take care of the Carolina Panthers and bring a south title to ATL this year!

Although the Falcons lost a very winnable game last night by way of a couple of costly turnovers, all in all I thought the Bird’s defensive performance was outstanding. I was very impressed with the pass rush and getting after the football. The offense was out of sync but I kinda have theory about that. Despite what Meshawn Johnson said in the pregame……This was NOT a must win game for Atlanta and the Aints needed it much worse. The Falcons realize that it is a very real possibility that NO could end up right back in the GA dome come the playoffs and had no intentions of fully opening up the playbook. These two squads know each other very well and Atlanta WILL BE READY when Brees and company come back.

atlfan– I believe the Falcons would have loved to win this game. I question your theory though. Why would we blitz almost everydown if we didn’t want to show our hand. I think the game plan was to run the ball with Turner and pressure Breeze. I think the same game plan will be used if play them again. The only thing I saw that would support the theory is the ultra conservative play calling on Offense. It was also disappointing that the D was so lacksodaisical getting to the line. How many snaps were made when we were not even set. With that being said, the Falcons have some good film on the saints. I don’t think they closed their playbook. The one play I would like to see the falcons D work on is that quick slant. Got to defend that play.

Love the Falcons fans who can dish it out before the game but don’t want to take it after they lose. Your D was flying around, but it will be tough to repeat that when we have our top running back for the rubber match. You needed 3 turnovers and a missed 29 yd FG in OT to slip by us in Game 1; a “gift” of a TD to Davis, plus several penalties to keep it close in this one. We”ll see if the Falcons have what it takes to play like Champions in January. We know the Saints do….

People need to tap the brakes on the praise for Drew Brees today. He led a great TD drive to win the game, but his performance for the entire game was not very good at all. You can’t just say he had a great game because of his yardage totals. Sure he threw for 302 yards, but it took his second highest number of attempts this season to do it. 302 yards on 49 attempts is good for 6.1 yards per pass, that’s good for about 25th in the league. He did have one great TD drive, but he had two horrible interceptions that could very well have cost his team the game. Overall, this was his second lowest passer rating of the season behind the loss to Arizona.

The truth is, the game was a defensive slugfest, won by the only team who could muster up a touchdown drive. Credit Brees as much as possible for putting together the only true scoring drive of the game, but you gotta realize the two defenses owned the game.

Agree completely – the Falcons’ defense was absolutely awesome last night. Glanville on his BEST day could not have delivered that kind of defensive performance over an entire football game. Hats off (again) to Smitty, Van Gorder and the boyz. Next week?? Stay focused and put the Panthers away in the first half, score one more in the 3rd, then pull the starters and get ready for the playoffs. One game at a time… methodical and patient. Steve Young’s post-game comments last night was perfect: This franchise is here to stay regardless of what happens this season… Dimitroff is clearly building with the same philosophy that Schuerholtz and the Braves had in mind back in 1991…

@Jack in Macon-

You can’t judge a DB’s effectiveness by how close he is to an open receiver when he catches the ball. You judge by how completions they allow compared to the number of times their receiver is targeted. Also, we don’t know what the coverage was. It could’ve been a zone coverage where he’s supposed to be 8 to 10 yards away.

The defense did indeed play very well, but they were also on the field FAR too much. My concern is that they probably can’t sustain that level of intensity for that many minutes; this team NEEDS to control the clock to win. And that falls on the offense; if Turner isn’t getting the job done, then at least mix up the looks or get an extra back behind Ryan add trick plays and keep defenses off-balance.

There does at times seem to be a clear discrepancy between the defensive improvements we’re seeing week after week and the offense, which never really has found its stride. At least some of that comes down to the offensive playcalling; having Turner or anyone else run a draw play into the stacks the Saints constantly had waiting in the middle is useless, and it yielded the game’s biggest turnover (and likely the deciding play of the game) at the goal line. And I’ve NEVER liked those quick passes to receivers still standing behind the line of scrimmage; they almost never turn out for positive yards. It’s clear that while White, Gonzalez, and Jenkins are all capable receivers, they’re just not enough by themselves to be able to expect too many deep plays; the Falcons are short at least one good wide receiver opposite White to spread out opposing defenses. Ryan is establishing himself as one of the better QBs in the NFL, but simply put Rome wasn’t built in a day; he still needs more weapons to go to.

The Falcons as constituted remind me of the Braves of the early ’90s (pre-Maddux): good enough to contend for a title, but by no means a shoe-in to dominate anybody. Hopefully they’ll still be good enough to win the Superbowl this year, but if not it will be interesting to see if they can put in the final pieces for that dominant team we’re still waiting for before Gonzalez and others start leaving or retiring.

I’m happy for all the Falcons selected to the Pro Bowl, but especially Ovie. I think he’s the most underrated player on their team. As for Grimey, i watched the Pro Bowl analysis on NFLTV, and they listed him as being one of the players they were most surprised to see not named. That’s a long way from preseason, when many fans may have been surprised to see him make the Falcons.

I also think there is something to the Falcons having a vanilla offensive game plan last night knowing they might see the Saints again in a few weeks.

Finally, I know a lot of Saints fans lke to talk junk on our boards, but I was shocked last night to be approached by some Saints fans after the game saying that it was a tough loss, the Falcons have a great team, we’ll see you again in the playoffs, and remember that our team lost three at the end of the year on the way to winning the Superbowl.

From my perspective, Malarky got out schemed by the NO defensive coordinator last night. Saints took what the Falcon’s D gave them, which was the short and mid range passes. The Falcons should have taken the same from the Saints instead of continuing to try to run Turner when the run game was not there. But hey, just take care of the Panthers next week and all is good.

Based on my observations of the game, and the terrible offensive play calling, i got the impression that Atlanta didn’t really care about winning the game. The defense was OUTSTANDING to say the least, but NO’s receivers were causing matchup problems considering our safeties were playing alot of man coverage on them. In regards to offense, that was some of the worst offensive play calling i have ever seen! The falcons were so predictable on first down that NO would put 8 and 9 in the box over and over again…i was sick of it after the first quarter, yet the falcons made no adjustments and continued to accept small gains….how could it be any more obvious that they needed to pass when you have receivers uncovered down the field????? Had it not been for the defensive touchdown and their great play….it would have been a blowout….Hey offensive coordinator!! get it together or go home!!

Actually, from what I have seen from the Eagles lately….I want to play them as soon as we can. Sure they pulled it out against the Giants, but we saw what the Giants were yesterday. Not sure the Eagles win another game this season they way they are playing. The Giants gave them a gift, and we saw what the Giants were yesterday. Now they look horrible a bad team with a rookie QB. I am guessing since Vick felt he should win the MVP, he must be back with Homies.

Charlie, and this is the only time I’ll address you… You don’t have the bulk or the speed of the Giants or the Bears to say that… Those teams can dictate coverages and front 7 play… The Atlanta Falcons are not that, they’ve to out scheme and make plays… The Vikings front seven is still capable of that on occasion…

Now you guys can get back to trying make yourselves feel better…

Great game last night. As a Saints fan, I am not taking much from the offensive performance or lack thereof by the Falcons. With the Panthers being their ticket to the division and homefield, they did not go deep into their offensive playbook. However they did on defense, and it was not good enough to stop the Saints when it counted. That approach (heavy dose of the blitz) may not work next time against a prepared Saints offense in the playoffs. If they play again in the playoffs, the third game will be a blowout by either the Saints or the Falcons!!

Question: How many fans here criticizing the Falcons had them at 12-3 with a very good chance of them ending up 13-3 . .. . .no NFL game is a gimme . . . . so how many would have complained if they end up 12-4 at the beginning of the year. How many actually had us sweeping the Saints? I’d bet many assumed the opposite . .. .so two very good games and a split is nothing to sneer at. I remember M Bradley’s article predicting 12-4 . . .. I remember many thinking it too optimistic and thinking 10-6 was more like it – never mind those “hoping” for 8-8 or worse. his body breaks down toward the end of the season and his numbers plummet because of it.

I saw a stat showing Smith is the winningest NFC head coach since he’s been with Altanta. They . . .. including the Offense have to be doing something right. I was wondering, I lived in Pittsburgh for a year and a half when he was elevated to the OC position for Cowher in 2000 to 2001… I think why he is so hamstrung here is that he had Hines Ward and Randle EL who were so diverse in their talents. He’s been chasing that ever since in my mind… I know he got out of Buffalo because he could not find it there… Roddy has Ward like talent and sometimes the determination. But I think that his discipline is what keeps him from getting there possibly… Jenkins will never reach what Randle El did his first time there… I mean, the man got Kordell Stewart to a championship game… Just saying…

A fumble at the goal line on the way into the endzone. A offensive game plan with Harry Douglas as the go to guy and All World TE Tony must have been on IR because he was not part of the plan. On NO 90 yard drive we never rushed at all. It was disapointing because the whole world was watching and we just let it get away. I will say Breese gets away from sacks like nobody else. JSS . . .. we get 25 ppg, normally we totally dominate time of possession, we are right up there in 3rd down conversions . . .which is normally a result of decent yardage on 1st and/or 2nd down. It’s not flashy like the Saints or Manning with the Colts, but we have been getting the job done on O . .. .most of the time. Yesterday I don’t think they expected a continuing tough Rush D by the Saints . . . as from what I understand they have not been great in that area this year. So we didn’t come out with the “no huddle” type of scheme that was pretty effective against the Ravens. Who knew the Saints would shut down the rush so well.

I agree they get the yards late in games . . .but normally that’s when they’ve been somewhat productive running in the first 3 quarters. They just never seemed to get anything going consistently yesterday outside of the big run by Turner. Even 3 yard gains can keep that game plan for later big runs due to tiring D . . .. .not the case yesterday. I would have thought the passing game would have opened up a bit more. There were flashes of that, but Ryan was not on form . . ..or as you have mentioned JSS . ..the receiving corps wasn’t up to par in getting separation . . .especially since I can only assume Gonzales and White were also being targeted for special attention.

Jeff, I have to agree that the Defense was good, but coach called off the pressure in the 4th qtr, resulting in NO winning score. Secondly you cannot coach scare and that was what coach Smith did when he punted with less than 3 minutes to go. The decision to punt was similar to what Coach Smith did in Pittsburgh and that also killed any chance of a victory.
Despite the resuts on Monday I feel very confident that if we take care of business against Carolina we will make it to Dallas as participants.

J.Schultz u can say forget about it all you want. Although you praise the efforts of the defense it gave up a six at a critical moment in the game when rookie tight end J.Graham caught an easy touchdown. There’s no such thing as a good loss. While praising the Falcon defense and declaring them “playoff ready” take a look at what the Saints defense did holding M.Turner to 48 yards on 17 carries. Matty Ice had only 148 yds on 29 attempts and 1 t.d. M.Smith punted on a critical 4 and 6 because the Saints defense had been effective all night. The “play off ready” Atlanta Falcon defense then allowed the Saints to run out the clock converting 2 critical 3 downs. All this in the Georgia where they were previously undefeated needing a win to secure home field in the playoffs. I would called this “play off ready”. Who Dat Baby???

“Najeh Davenpoop — “You win some, you lose some.” Damn, why didn’t I think of that?”

Well, the point I was trying to make is that when you play close games week in and week out, sometimes the breaks are not going to go your way and you will lose, and the Falcons have had breaks go their way more often than not this year (Hartley’s miss, Clements foolishly trying to return the pick and getting stripped by Roddy White). A team that wins by more comfortable margins (the Patriots for example) generally won’t be seeing a game turn on one bad break.

Funny to see all the Vick haters come here and rejoice after his first bad game of the season. Brady had his bad game against Cleveland, Peyton Manning had his bad game against Dallas, and Vick had his bad game tonight. Vick was clearly off all game — you could see that he was throwing with his body instead of his wrist. The good thing about this loss for him is that he gets to chill next Sunday and let the nagging injuries heal before playing the Packers or Giants in the opening round of the playoffs. The bad thing, of course, is that the Eagles now have to go to Soldier Field in Round 2.

It’s fair to say now, though, that Vick’s shot at the MVP went out the window. Good thing for him is that the Super Bowl MVP is still there for the taking.

it is good that somebody in the national press realize the falcon defense is for real.
all we heard from the nuts on fox and other national tv so called experts was the
falcons defense was only average and had not been tested.

will for all of that crap, the super bowl champs tested it and THE FALCON D
held brees and the saints to only 17 points after the falcon offense
turns the ball over to the saints that cause our defense
to play most of the game on the field.

our offensive line did not play very well and the aints stuff
the run for most of the game.

our passing game was not consisent with our
receivers could not get open which put further pressure
on ryan and our defense as well, but the real killer was the
turnovers especially on the one yard line by turner.

we cannot have that in the playoffs.

I think our DEFENSE was awesome. The DC finally realized the capabilities of our defense when he cuts them lose. Brian Williams do not forget back to the basic breakdown and make the tackle. Could have stopped that 90 yard drive.

??? I think Norwood was missed in this game for change of pace. On some of Turner runs he could not get the corner, but a speed back could have made the corner for maybe 2 to 5 extra yards. Which wouls have made our play action effective. I think the Falcons should look at giving Houston a 6 or 7th round pick for Steve Slaton if he is still under contract and do not resign Norwood. I would like some feedback.

I’ve never seen a pass interference call on the offensive and defensive player at the same time. like the call against Roddy. Reminds me of game they had when Chris Miller was QB and he tried to down the ball after a completion to stop the clock and the refs called a fumble because he hadn’t raised the ball up high enough. Only happens to the falcons. Turner was jinxed when announcer said in first quarter that he hadn’t fumbled in over 400 carries, then he fumbles on the goal line. Falcons jinxed when announcers said that the Saints had given up a touchdown or a field goal every time opponent reached one yard line since 1992.

Falcons will be OK when Mularkey shows imagination on the goal line. Ever hear of play action on FIRST DOWN!!!

1) Saints needed the game more than the Falcons did
2) The Falcons had the Panthers game in their back pocket, making this game meaningless if the birds do their thing against a team they beat by 21 three weeks ago
3) Teams that roll into the playoffs with long winning streaks usually lose

Therefore, Monday’s game wasn’t that big of a deal.

When I see the Falcons, even with the opposing D putting up a good pass rush, never try even 1 screen, I think of Bobo.

When I saw the Falcons Monday with first and goal from the 1 yd line, I said out loud, “they will run up the middle on first and second downs, no matter what.”

If I could call those plays, how simple was it for the Saints DC to load the box? No imagination. No trust in his star-caliber QB. Sounds so familiar.

the falcants are built in the mold of nfl circa pre 80’s. run hard. play action. no penalties. good defense. time of possession. in the modern era only the ravens have won a superbowl w that formula, ask jim mora. while i love D, the formula not only doesn’t work, atlanta doesn’t even have the personnel to get it done. you wind up getting a lotta wins *more like preventing a lot of losses* but that’s regular season only.

a bruiser back w limited speed and therefor a weak receiver. his backup in the exact same mold. scatback was rarely used. an Oline that is OK in pass protection but just awright in run blocking. the secondary is uneven. the linebackers are lightweight jokes. the conservative playcalling blew. Ryan couldn’t figure out where to go when NO only rushed 3 and went into coverage mode. while i don’t think ryan will lose a game as an excellent game manager, he’s not special. and if your RB isn’t special either, forget getting thru the playoffs and/or winning the superbowl.

You are never going to please everyone and that is clearly spewed out in this blog. The Falcons offense isn’t good enough? They score almost 26 points per game! Why don’t they good deep more? Because the only receiver they have that can actually catch the ball is Roddy is he isn’t really a deep threat receiver. Defense is solid and the offense is very good most days. The big question will be special teams. The Falcons tend to give up big plays on special teams and in close playoff games that could kill this team.

Men in motion just tell you what the safety will do… The wildcat is good is if you have an exceptional player that can make plays… You’ve seen your offensive line, do you really want to expose a first time starter like Murray to a empty backfield when your best wideout was in civilian clothes? Arkansas has a luxury that you guys did not have, Mallet… Kentucky suffered the same fate you guys did against a suspect Florida defense… Like I said about execution, you have to have an identity… What is UGA’s? That’s their issue… Alabama with John Parker Wilson was about as imaginative as a 1930’s penny novel… But you sure darn knew they would execute… Now, If you guys want to be exciting, go hire the QB coach at Oregon and then shutdown the blogs for the 1st two months of next season…

Losing to the champs by 3 and having a 12-3 record ain’t nothing to sneeze at, but this game told us many things, I agree.

The one issue that stands out to me was that we played conservative on offense and special teams.

I was very disappointed in punt returning, where it seemed like Wheems ran away from the ball every time. It must have been 5-6 times he ran away, waving his arms while the ball rolled another 20 yards towards our goal line.

Where was the fire, the guts and the drive to return the ball and give us better field position?

Then, clearly we could not run the ball, so where was the mulitple receiver sets, trying to free up Roddy? Two drives they through to Jenkins, which was a good move, but other than that they seemed to insist upon playing their game plan when it was not there for them to use.

The Saints’ defense was excellent and I do agree we were conservative and a little stubborn on offense. It seemed to me that we went into the game with the mindset of being safe on offense and special teams.

Geez, mix it up a little, fake a punt if you have to, especially on the 4th & 6 play in 4th quarter.

Finally, the last Saints’ drive it appeared we went into prevent, which is again conservative, safe play calling and that is not what has gotten us this far.

The Falcons’ defense was excellent and blitzed all night until the end of the game. They were not conservative, mostly.

Wheems embarrassed me, and the offense must be able to adjust when Turner is taken out of the game.

We win Sunday, no doubt but we have to be aggressive and force issues and take chances in the playoffs. I hope they don’t tell Wheems to run away from balls!

Go get that ball when we need it. Darn it, lose trying if nothing else.

With whose D-line and linebackers do you plan to execute that brilliant game plan with? You’ve shown no inclination to show that DeCoud and Moore can guard over the top to do that…

Jeff,

Your article belongs on the “Com-on man” segment for ESPN. Shame on you for creating shuch false hope in the dirty birds fan base. Opinions are like rear-ends, everybody has one; you gave us your VERY masterful spin which was a kin to dressing up a nasty terd to look appealing and here is mine; You spoke ture in one of your “we are even comments” if you call the Falcons 3 point win in NO and the NO 3 point in Atl the same well then yes they are – yes they both scored 41 points each – yes they both have pro-bowl QB’s and the list of similarities goes on……but…..

Here’s the real deal, your offense is full of Mularkey and your defense got gassed and then sliced up like Christmas turkey on the 90 yard drive – spin it how you like, your denfense is no where close to “being ready”. They sucked with allowing 8 of 17 on 3rd down conversions most of those conversions coming after half time when the real coaching staff made the right moves. No, your defense is not ready for the play-offs. As it has been said every week “on any given Sunday” and in any given stadium…..Falcons, Eagles, Bears…..I’ll take the Sanits coaching staff and player experience (been there and done dat) over anything out there. I’m not saying we are going to win it all (again), I’m not saying we deserve anything – that’s why they line up and play every game – I’d just rather take my chances with a proven “big show” staff and team. The Falcons will get there (maybe this year or maybe next) but it will not be because of your defense.

Have you noticed that when Matt Ryan changes a play at the line of scrimmage yelling “Kill,” “Kill,” that the “new” play is a run to the offensive right (defensive left) side of the field. I have been watching that for the past five weeks, and it is always the same play, and it happens every time. During the Saints/Falcons game on Monday night, when Matty yelled “kill,” the entire defense slid to their left at the snap of the ball, and I mean the entire defense!! Maybe the OC ought to think about changing that “automatic” to some other run!! If the Falcons had run to the offensive left side whoever was carrying the ball could have walked for a huge gain!!

One thing to consider with Philly now locked into the #3 seed and IF the Falcons take care of business on Sunday…The NFL will want Philly in primetime on Saturday night, so Saints would play on Sunday late. The NFL then will want a potential Patriots/Colts game on the following Saturday night, and if the Eagles win they will not put Vick and Brady on the same day, so the Eagles/Bears would be Sunday. Saints/Falcons would be the early game on Saturday with the Saints on a short week after hopefully traveling to Seattle to play a late afternoon Sunday game in the cold. Advantage, Falcons.

Elvisinthehouse, I think the Falcons will win at least one playoff game. If they have to play Philly, they will have problems. Besides Philly, I don’t see any opponent in the NFC who could put them out. Yes, the Saints beat them, but I don’t think they’ll do it again. The Packers have no running game. This is from “Eagles Gab: The Definitive Philadelphia Eagles Blog”:

Passing Offense: C-

Michael Vick sucked this game. That is really the only way to put it. He was a flat out disappointment and threw and fumbled this game away. Vick may have finished the game with only one interception, but there should have been about four more.

Vick constantly looked like he was trying to force throws, and when he wasn’t forcing throws, it seemed like he was over shooting and over throwing receivers. There were several plays throughout the game where Vick just missed the open receiver.

On other plays, he would just elect to hit the dump off pass to McCoy instead of going for the open receiver down the field. There were plays where it was a designed deep pass and Vick just missed the timing and that’s how the Vikings were able to get that interception.

Then the Vick fumble when being sacked. That was the story of this passing offense. Drop back and get hit and either make a bad throw or just fumble the ball away. At least it was a good play by Antoine Windfield.

Vick’s MVP chances are done. Tom Brady had an amazing game and Vick did not.

Vick finished the game with a 74.1 QB rating. Webb finished with a 87.8 QB Rating.

Wow.

Exactly my thoughts, before I read this post. Before Monday nights game I did not believe that the Falcons defense was good enough to win a Super Bowl. Now i’m a believer. This loss means nothing, and after watching the outstanding defensive performance against the best offense in football, i am more excited about the playoffs than ever. Yes I agree, for one night the offense did look bad, mainly because of the turnovers, but I expect coach smith will get some tweaks in and make some corrections. We know we have the talent on offense, it was mainly just poor execution and maybe some poor play calling in certain situations. If center doesn’t botch the snap and give them seven, or if turner doesn’t fumble on the two, we probably get seven. – either way we win the game and allot of this gets overlooked, so I think its probably a good thing we took the loss, now these things will probably get a little more attention and hopefully corrected before we begin the playoffs. Don’t hang your heads or listen to the Brees show on ESPN, we have a superbowl team and everyone should be thrilled. Go Falcons!

What game did you watch??? The Saints were 32 yards short of putting 400 yards on this scary defense. 23 first downs! 8 for 17 on 3rd down! Time of possession 36.35 to 23.25! What defense held an offense (with 5 so called Pro Bowlers) to 14 first downs and a total of 215 yards???

I don’t see anything that would make a playoff team scared of this defense. Now be realistic the Saints offense was their worst enemy. Brees’ bone head interception for the TD although the Falcons apply good pressure it was first down and Brees should have just eaten the ball and taken the sack. Then the touchdown to Colston called back because of a false start. The Falcons came out with a good defensive scheme putting pressure on Brees but that was a one game anonamlly for this defense.

This defense shot its wad to win this one game. It would have been better served to save it for the playoffs. What it proved is Atlanta is incapable of gettig to the QB without blitzing. Other teams will be prepared for this defense and I would bet that you won’t see this type of defensive attack by the Falcons again unless they play the Saints again in the playoffs. Even then I believe the Saints will prepare for it.

Now that Atlanta lost this game at home, in Prime Time, a game they wanted badly express by that big mouth Roddy, I don’t think any playoff team is going to be worried about the so called home field advantage.

The only thing that can be taken from this game is that Atlanta can be beat at home especially if the team does come in and try to beat themselves like the Saints did!

I was one of the first ones to call it on Tuesday morning – the offensive game plan looked so different than what we’re used to. It was a plain vanilla offense on purpose. If we really wanted this game we would have came out like we did against the aints the first game, or the Ravens or Green Bay. Then I thought about this – remember how the aints lost the last three games of the regular season last year when they didn’t matter? It makes all the sense in the world…keep those aces in the sleeve!

I guess when you wrote this article you didn’t take anything serious!!! What a joke!!! Do you really believe what you wrote??

When it was time for this defense to step up what did they do? Jeff

Does allowing a 90 yard drive ( not 80, 70, 60 but 90) when the offense has its back against the wall to take the lead in the forth quarter. Or with the team counting on you to get a stop you allow the offense to get not one but two first downs and run out the clock.

Playoff ready defense simply don’t do this!!!

The tittle of the articlle should be

“defense proves Falcons ready for playoffs but don’t take me seriously”

Thanks Jeff you are really a true Homer and I don’t me Simpson!!!

The Falcons Are 12-3 But They Can’t Draw As Many Fans Without Mike Vick

Adam Fusfeld | Dec. 29, 2010, 10:18 AM | 99 |

The Atlanta Falcons haven’t suffered a local TV blackout in an NFL season full of them, so that alone qualifies as a success at the gate.

But considering their 12-3 record, the Falcons rank a paltry 18th in attendance and have plummeted in value over the last 16 months. Owner Arthur Blank has to be discouraged with his team’s problems at the box office, and on the balance sheet, despite its on-field success. What more can he do?

Over at Forbes, Mike Ozanian has an answer – bring back Mike Vick. He doesn’t actually call for a trade, but does point out that even though the Falcons were worse in the standings during Vick’s tenure, they sold more tickets.

During Vick’s six years the team went 38-28 and filled the Georgia Dome to 96 percent of its capacity. Matt Ryan is 32-15 in two-plus years but Atlanta has filled just 94 percent of the seats. Those unsold seats cost millions of dollars in ticket, parking, concession, and merchandise revenue, according to the story.

But Forbes fails to mention that in between the Falcons’ quarterback transition NFL attendance took a major hit. Leaguewide attendance dropped 2 percent between 2007 and 2010 (projections), from 68,702 to 67,313. That, of course, is a much better explanation for why the Falcons have filled 2 percent less of their stadium, than any disdain for Matt Ryan.

Compared to leaguewide numbers, the Falcons attendance has remained steady. Sure, Matt Ryan isn’t as exciting as Mike Vick, but Atlanta can embrace a winner just as well as it once embraced a highlight-reel quarterback.

“CHRIS COLLINSWORTH QUOTE OF THE NIGHT”

With Joe Webb, Mike Vick and Tim Tebow, looks like the league may be trending to a whole new style of quarterbacks.

Even Aaron Rodgers is a running mobile quarterback, the slow one dimensional pocket quarterback will be a thing of the past :)

Just look at the major college programs and you will see the Vick type of quarterbacks, well at least the highly successful programs, I.E. Auburn, Ohio State, Michigan, etc. But cheer up one dimensional qb fans, it was a good run :)

I have been saying the very same thing for the past few years. :)

Forget about it?! Are you nuts!? There is no reason we should have lost that game, other then the Falcons taking a big pay off. They most certainly didn’t play like they wanted to win. For that matter both teams played pretty stinky! They play like that Sunday they can forget getting division title. They play like that during play offs and they can kiss another superbowl opportunity goodbye. Roddy White keep your mouth shut and save the energy for the field. Ryan – learn to read the field and make plays that will result in touchdowns!

Matt "CHOKE" Ryan

December 29th, 2010

I am not an Atalnta by any strech but dude you immedately lose the any argument that starts with:

“CHRIS COLLINSWORTH QUOTE OF THE NIGHT”

To make my point here is some of his stupidity;

I’m not gonna deny it, I walk around with hundred dollar bills hanging out of my pocket…I like girls that aren’t too bright because you can trick ‘em a little bit…high school girls love me. Fourteen to eighteen, I’m a big star with them. As soon as they mature, after they turn 18 years old, they start to figure it out.

Collinsworth: Is that a ‘cool’ thing to say, in this day and age? That you love your country, and that you’re fighting for the red, white and blue? It seems sort of like a day gone by.

Kobe: No, it’s a cool thing for me to say. I feel great about it, and I’m not ashamed to say it. I mean, this is a tremendous honor. Cris w/ Kobe;

“Marvin is a father figure to Chad and calms him down,”
Marvin is going to lose his job because of this egotisical malcontent

You can’t tell me the Philadelphia Eagles wouldn’t have loved to cut Terrell Owens. They can’t cut him. He’s too talented. They don’t have people to replace him. You learn to tolerate stars and their antics.”

“Oh, a Gregg Williams defense will blitz you.”

Tom Brady at the Super Bowl was talking about it last year with us privately before the game and he was nervous about it. You could clearly tell that he was worried about going into this season without Charlie Weis.”

and finally he actually said this “when it was my turn to talk.”

So now you say this based on CRIS:

With Joe Webb, Mike Vick and Tim Tebow, looks like the league may be trending to a whole new style of quarterbacks.

Even Aaron Rodgers is a running mobile quarterback, the slow one dimensional pocket quarterback will be a thing of the past

Just look at the major college programs and you will see the Vick type of quarterbacks, well at least the highly successful programs, I.E. Auburn, Ohio State, Michigan, etc. But cheer up one dimensional qb fans, it was a good run
