Playoff poll: Do you prefer Falcons play Saints or Packers?

Drew Brees

Drew Brees is back in the Georgia Dome tonight.

Aaron Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers was here in November.

While the Falcons have done a good job this season not looking beyond the next game — in this case, tonight’s meeting with the New Orleans Saints at the Georgia Dome — it doesn’t have to stop us from looking ahead, does it?

So here’s the question: Which team would you rather see the Falcons play in their first playoff game: The Saints for the third time or the Green Bay Packers for the second? Because it’s likely to be one of those two.

Who would you rather see Falcons play?

Loading ... Loading ...

The Falcons will lock up the NFC’s top seed with a win either tonight or next week against Carolina. Pending the outcome of Philadelphia’s postponed home game against Minnesota, which has been rescheduled for Tuesday night, this is how the standings in the NFC lay out right now:

♦ 1. Falcons (12-2): Bye.

♦ 2. Philadelphia (10-4) or Chicago (11-4): Bye.

♦ 3. Chicago or Philadelphia.

♦ 4. St. Louis (7-8).

♦ 5. New Orleans (10-4).

♦ 6. Green Bay/N.Y. Giants/Tampa Bay (9-6). (Green Bay controls its own destiny. It’s in the playoffs if it defeats visiting Chicago next week, or if New York and Tampa Bay both lose.)

Let’s assume for now that the Eagles — who have home games remaining against the Vikings and Dallas — win the No. 2 seed and the bye. In that scenario, the Packers (or Giants or Buccaneers) travel to Chicago in the first round and New Orleans travels to St. Louis. If the Saints and Bears win, the top four seeds in the next round would be: Falcons-Eagles-Bears-Saints. New Orleans would return to the Georgia Dome for the NFC semifinal.

If the Packers (or Giants or Bucs) defeat Chicago, and the Saints win at St. Louis, the seeding becomes: Falcons-Eagles-Saints-Packers. In that scenario, the Falcons play Green Bay and New Orleans travels to Philadelphia.

The best case scenario for the Falcons is that the Nos. 3 (Chicago or Philadelphia) and 4 (St. Louis) seeds win. (The Rams get a No. 4 seed despite its current 7-8 record for winning the NFC West). If that happens, The Rams come to Atlanta. But most aren’t expecting that.

So assuming its the Saints or Packers, which opponent would you rather see? The Falcons are 1-0 against each, defeating the Saints 27-24 in overtime in September, and the Packers 20-17 Nov. 28.

I don’t want to face either of those teams, but if I had to pick which one I’d rather say, I’d go with the Packers. Rodgers and Brees rate about the same on the fear factor scale, but the Packers don’t have a consistent running game.

I’m pulling like hell for the Rams or Seahawks to pull a shocker.

Doesn’t really matter to me the Falcons have already beaten both the Packers and Saints this season. I liked the Falcons were able to run the ball consistently against both teams, either way I would like the situation the Falcons would be in at that point.

Can we play the Vikings? Heck, anybody we get will be tough at this point. And, let me add, it’s no advantage that we beat both of these teams earlier. Alot of times, that’s a disadvantage. It does help that we will be home team, but neither will be an easy game.

It doesn’t matter, we may end up seeing both of them anyway. The playoffs are going to be a slog. To win the whole thing we are going to have to go through some combination of Green Bay, Philly, Chicago and New Orleans, and then either New England, Pittsburgh or Baltimore in the Super Bowl.

And after we get through that and win the title, the first words out of Trent Dilfer’s mouth will be ‘no way they repeat.’

Packers have a better D and better corners, not to mention some guy named Aaron Rodgers. While Brees can hurt us even worse, I don’t think NOLA’s defense can stop us at this point. We’d have a better chance of controlling clock against the ‘Aints at this point in my opinion. Even on their longer drives, NOLA doesn’t seem to use a lot of clock which leaves plenty of time for Matty Ice to do his thing at the end.

Either one does not mattter, to get to the super bowl we are going to have to beat two good teams. Saints are good but their defense is weak aginst the run and very bad on the road see Balitmore and Bengals. Packers play good offense, but are one diminsional and Aaron Rogers came in here 4 weeks ago after lighting other teams up and only scored 17. Bottom line bring anyone on, there is no fear in this team, they think they can beat anyone and as a fan I feel the same way. Hey TO you are a Hall of Famer, but you and Moss will never win the big game, b/c of your attitude. Glad we did not pick you up in the off season. Roddy my man up be he is no diva!

If we win tonite I’d rather play the Packers. If we lose I’d rather play the Saints. Hard to beat a good team 3 times, or even twice. I think the Saints are a more balanced team, better running game and better defense.

Jeff, I know they dont announce it until the playoffs start but any guesses as to what time slot on the 15th/16th that divisional round game would be, assuming Atlanta gets the #1 seed? Is it predetermined or does the NFL look at matchups?

This is of minor importance, because the NFC West champ will be steamrolled by the 5 seed, but Seattle wins the division with a week 17 win.

I’ll take the Packers anyday. It would be overwhelming if we knocked the Saints out the playoffs, but it would be traumatizing if the opposite happened.

I LOVE Vick, but I hope the Eagles get knocked out early so that we won’t have to face them. How ironic would that be. Vick for the first time as a starting QB… only to knock out his old team.

I’d rather us play the Saints – ESPECIALLY if we lose tonight. Nothing taste as sweet as the Falcons beating the World Super Bowl “Fluke” Champions when it matters MOST and putting them OUT of the playoffs. That will shut them up (and the national media naysayers i.e. D!ckhead Dilfer).

Followed that victory over the Saints with a victory over the Eagles and Mike Vick would be Fantastic! Nothing sweater than shutting up the crap from Matt “Chock” Ryan butthole and other Vick supporters and Falcons haters. Getting to the Superbowl (win or lose) will be an after thought. Just beating both Saints and Eagles would we oh so sweet.

Tough call, but i’d rather face the Saints. Drew Brees is almost guaranteed to throw a couple of interceptions and their defense isn’t as good as the Packers.

The Falcons like to play control the clock and keep the opposing offense off the field with long sustained drives… it’s much easier to do that against the Saints defense than the Packers defense. Saints are terrible at stopping the run and the Packers have the #1 rated defense in the league in terms of points allowed per game.

Since the creation, of the NFL South,

“If New Orleans loses Monday night, it can still clinch a playoff spot next week with: 1) NO win or tie

It really doesn’t matter which team they meet, both are mirror images of each other no rushing game to speak of. Both teams just sling the ball all over the place. If the Falcons go ahead and secure home field advantage tonight against the Saints they may have the luxury of playing not only their playoff games but the Super Bowl all in dome stadiums where Matt Ryan has a Brady-esque passer rating.

There’s no easy road through the playoffs.

The Saints are always dangerous to Atlanta. The Packers have hobbled together a run game, Aaron Rodgers is playing lights-out, and the team is peaking at the perfect time. Chicago made some brilliant offensive tweaks to go along with their killer defense (yesterday’s game notwithstanding), and are also peaking late in the season. The Eagles have so many offensive weapons, it’s nearly impossible for any team to shut them down.

Who would I rather see Atlanta play in the playoffs? Whoever earns a trip to the Georgia Dome. Bring ‘em on; one at a time or singularly. The 2010 Falcons can hold their own against any of them.

The thing that makes the Eagles so dangerous is all that speed, but unlike the receivers that Vick had in Atlanta – the Eagles all have good hands and can actually catch the ball.

Averaging 29.2 points and over 400 yards per game is a coach’s night mare:

- DeSean Jackson……..4.2

- Jeremy Maclin………..4.3

- Lesean Mccoy…………..4.4

- Jason Avant…………..4.5 and best hands in NFL

And ask the Giants how fast the tight end, Brent Celek is.

Of course, we all know about the 4.3 speed Vick has.

The funny thing is, the Eagles offense hasn’t peaked yet – that is SCARY!

The packers will beat the bears twice in a row, and beat the falcons on their way to the NFC championship game. whether or not they will reach the super bowl is tbd, cuz at that point i dont know if we will be playing the saints or eagles…. i like the packs odds in both of them seeing how a-rod is simply a beast and you cant hold back the most complete wide receiving corps in the nfl no matter how good your defense is.

Given Matt ‘Choke’ Ryan is a kid, I guess his Mommy lets him on the computer all day (but not very late it night it appears… beddy bye must be early in middle school these days). Thankfully he isn’t an adult because if he was, he’s screwing his boss on time given he’s on the web before 5PM a lot (I can’t look until I get off work). Or he’s self employed running a lemonade stand or something kids do.

Which team has a better chance beating Philly in round 2. We can beat GB and NO so let one who has the best chance to beat Philly play them and we’ll take the other. We can beat both! Then after we win round one we’ll play and beat the other!

Of course it would be awesome to beat Philly for the NFC championship except for those that won’t give up the ghost and wear their Vick jerseys!

Jeff Schultz, fabulous blog today. Very intriguing topic. Of course, we’d all like to see the Rams here. I, personally, wouldn’t want to have to play TB for a 3rd time, much less New Orleans, for a 3rd time. So, my vote goes to the Packers. Hey, there are a lot of very good teams in the NFC playoffs this year, except for whoever wins the West. There will be no “soft” games. That’s my opinion.

Now, I want everyone still reading, or potentially still reading this post, to envision this as a Super Bowl winning year for the Falcons. Just humor me, okay??? Sheesh. Wouldn’t it lend a bit more “oomph” if the Falcons beat the Defending Super Bowl Champs enroute to their own title?

To be thought of as “one of the greatest Super Bowl Champions ever,” the Falcons need to beat the Saints (Defending Champs,) then the Eagles (perennial playoff team for the past decade; largely regarded as one of the most dominant teams in the NFC and NFL during that period), then … to defeat the New England Patriots, # 1 seed in the AFC, for the big silver trophy.

Hey, it’d be hard to argue that the Falcons weren’t one of the very best teams to ever win the Super Bowl. They went 14-2 or 13-3 in the regular season, then defeated # 5 New Orleans, Defending Champs, then # 2 Philadelphia, then # 1 New England. “If” being the operative word. Personally, I just hope the Falcons do very well. I hope they can clinch homefield throughout the NFC playoffs. And I hope they at least reach the NFC title game. If they do, I’ll consider this 2010 season to be a “raging success.” This is YEAR THREE of consecutive “winning seasons.” How long did it take the Falcons just to have a back-to-back winning seasons? I think it was 42 years, or something like this. Even if they finished 12-4, that’s a tremendous season. If they win a playoff game, that’d be a very good season. If they reach the NFC title game and/or if they win the Halas Trophy, that’s an OUTSTANDING season. And if they reach the Super Bowl, that’s one of the greatest seasons EVERRRR in Falcons History. Needless to say, if they actually won the Super Bowl, it’d be thee GREATEST SEASON EVER for the Atlanta Falcons. And who could have thought about that, plum in the middle of the Michael Vick controversy … just a few short years ago?? It speaks to “overall strategy” and ownership. Arthur Blank chose the GM. The GM selected the Coach. There was a “vision.” There was a diagram … for how to escape the dark cloud of the Michael Vick saga. Getting Matt Ryan, 3rd overall, in the draft, was a huuuuge first step towards putting a new face on the franchise, and solving the problem at QB. Nothing against Matt Schaub. I hope Schaub has every success with the Houston Texans. I also wish Michael Vick every success with the Eagles, UNLESS they play the Falcons. Michael Vick’s turn-around is quite remarkable, as well. In a way, we can say they BOTH won. Michael Vick cleaned up his life, and the Falcons cleaned up their franchise. Congrats to both!

LAST!!!!!! I am thrilled!
Anyway, I would take the ATL vs GBP anytime….3x with the St.’s would be good…but I think, considering that ATL would have home field advantage, the crowd behind them…I think the “Pack” would be the best bet.
Now…how far could ATL go this year…as far as the “crowd” leads them….hmmmm…..ATL vs NE for the SB?…unreal!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Falcons thrive by controlling the clock with the running game and capitalizing on turnovers by the other team. The Packers defend the run better and have a better turnover margin than the Saints. I think the Falcons would rather see the Saints in the playoffs.

Hey, let’s protect Ryan and Brees like Philly did Vick with the Mayor pleading for them to cancel the game because of snow. Only 5 inches of snow feel prior to game time and less than 12 in the 24 hour period. We know why they canceled or postponed the game, because MV7 SUCKS in the cold and snow.
Oh wait, we can’t cancel here, it’s inside and not enough snow is left. Darn, we could have had a Wednesday night game.

What’s all the junk about this team can’t beat that team twice in one year. Yeah right. That’s crap. Bring either back to the Dome and the Falcons would WEAR out the Packers this time and not let them back in the game like last time. Also, let’s see if we have the chance to beat the Saints 3 times in one year. Can’t wait for that conversation tomorrow.

The ideal scenario for the Falcons would be for Chicago to beat Green Bay next week. NO will beat either the Falcons or Bucs (probably Bucs). Then the opening playoff round would be NY Giants at either St. Louis or Seattle and NO would play at Philly. The Giants beat the NFC West team and Philly beats NO. Then Atlanta would host the NY Giants and Philly would go to Chicago where they lost during the regular season We beat the NY Giants and then play the winner of Chi.-Philly. I would rather play Chicago but this team would be sky high against Philly and Mike Vick. Green Bay is hot after that win against the Giants so hope they lose against the Bears but it’ll be close.

@ Joey…
It is pretty simple… I don’rt agree (the reason) with how it started; but certain bloggers (i.e. Larry, Crabapple Joe, and especially UGABugKiller, then just BugKiller among others) at the beginning and the transition of the Vick led offense-to Harrington-to a Ryan led offense made wide and erroneously wild accusations about Matt Ryan and what he was going to be… And in turn, what Michael Vick never was and never would be. Moreover, they made even greater insinuations largely based on 1) Race 2) Cultural myopic behavior based on class and character 3) legal ramifications (financial, bankruptcy, and criminal law statutes) and then without basis went on a blog by blog campaign to discredit a series of bloggers via a “flaming” campaign.

In a counterweight (right or wrong), a series of bloggers moved independently of each other to take on the campaign. Some of it was just retaliation flaming. But most of it was reasoned questioning of the Matt Ryan contract ($72 million with a massive signing bonus), his career in college and his propensity for throwing interceptions, his road woes during the first 31 games of his career, and in conclusion, the massive reliance upon Michael Turner, Roddy White, and by addition Tony Gonzalez to move the cogs of a very conservative offense. These individual pieces were both the cusp of the argument with the meltdown in the desert in his 1st playoff appearance and then in the weeks leading to his injury (turf toe) in the Tampa game at the Dome last season. His play upon his return though the team won, it was lackluster excluding a 4th quarter drive in the Meadowlands against the Jets, Then during the season 3 preseason, the trend continued.

So we get to this season… You guys can fight about the merits of his play… I’ve said before, “I can care less,” until the final tick of the clock in Dallas, I’m just going to watch football, enjoy the playoff and lose no sleep over any of it…

Does Road Dawg not know that a New York Giants victory combined with two Saints losses give the Giants the final playoff spot, not the Bucs? Man, it is just not that hard, read!!! The loss to Detroit by the Bucs gave them the following weighted tie-breaker problem: The Giants “Wins tie break over Tampa Bay based on best win percentage in common games.”

Buh bye!!!

Yeah, let’s completely disregard the rushing stats and impact on the running game of the greatest running quarterback in the history of the game. That makes perfect sense.

By the way, the game recap for that game disagrees with you about the snow.

It’s also worth pointing out that Philadelphia tends to get a little chilly this time of the year. Hasn’t stopped Vick from being a leading MVP candidate.

Vick’s shortcomings in Atlanta were a direct result of terrible coaching, and Atlanta’s wins when Vick was here was a result of Vick overcoming terrible coaching. Period.

“I would rather play Chicago but this team would be sky high against Philly and Mike Vick. ”

Why does everyone assume the team would be extra motivated to play Philly? Dimitroff got rid of half the roster when he arrived in 2008, and off the top of my head the only current Falcons who were teammates of Vick are McClure, Roddy White, Jenkins, Babineaux, Koenen, and Norwood. It will be great for the football fans of Atlanta, but I don’t see how it would make a huge difference to the players.

Makes no difference who the Atlanta Falcons will play in the post season: they’ll lose. The NO Saints just beat the Falcons tonight 17-14. Some observations from tonight’s game:

1. the Falcons scored exactly one offensive TD against the SB champs
2. by losing the Falcons send the Saints this message: “You guys can own us in our building if you want.”
3. the NO Saints should remain, for years to come, the premier team in the NFC South division and legitimate Super Bowl contenders year in and year out
4. the Atlanta Falcons will contend for second or third place in the NFC South with the Tampa bay Buccaneers year in and year out and be a playoff contender and no better
5. after the Falcon’s loss tonight look for the NO Saints to beat the Tb Bucs at home and enter the playoffs having defeated two good teams
6. the Falcons will win their final game in nondescript fashion against the Carolina Panthers, the worst team in the league, entering the playoffs havving beaten a team they were expected to beat anyway

Wondering how the Falcons will do in the playoffs this year? Look no further than tonight’s loss as the template: the defense plays their butts off, Mike Mularkey’s offense doesn’t do anything. Michael Turner runs like he his cleats are encased in cement blocks and the Birds lose at home in a 17-14 or 17-10 type game.
