Falcons get a chance to clinch division and quiet critics

After last week's win in Seattle, the Falcons are one celebration away from clinching the NFC South.

After Brent Grimes secured last week's win in Seattle, the Falcons are one celebration away from clinching the NFC South.

After a 12-2 record, the clinched playoff berth, the likelihood of a division title, the likelihood of home field through the playoffs and several thousand more fans suddenly following Roddy White on Twitter, the Falcons may actually be close to securing their greatest achievement of all: Acceptance.

They’ve beaten New Orleans. They’ve beaten Baltimore. They’ve beaten Green Bay. If they defeat the Saints for a second time, shouldn’t that smother the lingering doubts?

They’ve won games running. They’ve won games passing. They’ve won games with their 5-foot-10 cornerback (Brent Grimes) and their 5-9 kick returner (Eric Weems) and their 35-year-old, 5-9 kicker (Matt Bryant) and, yes, maybe the winning lottery numbers.

They haven’t always been impressive. But doesn’t it say something when a team just keeps winning, like at no time in franchise history since the season it went to the Super Bowl?

Will there come a point at which everybody suddenly agrees: “OK, forget about style points and the fact Michael Vick dominates the first 27 minutes on SportsCenter. The Falcons might just be the team to beat”?

Here’s one more chance and one more national audience. The Falcons play host to New Orleans on Monday Night Football. Win this, and they’ll clinch the NFC South. They won’t have to pack a suitcase again until Super Bowl week.

Also, maybe everybody shuts up.

“I’ve said that all along that we don’t need anybody patting us on our back,” linebacker Mike Peterson said. “We’ll take that underdog role. We’ll take it all the way to Dallas.”

There are advantages to being 12-2 and having people doubt you. It keeps a team on edge. Players are less likely to get too comfortable when they’re basically being told every week that they’re a house of cards.

That happened again this week. Former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer, now of ESPN, likened the Falcons to the 2003 Kansas City Chiefs, who finished 13-3 in the regular season, only to get bounced in their first playoff game. Dilfer said he could easily foresee the Saints winning this game and then returning to the Georgia Dome in the playoffs and winning again, this despite the fact the Falcons are 19-3 under coach Mike Smith at the Dome (6-0 this year) and quarterback Matt Ryan is 19-1.

There’s at least one significant flaw in Dilfer’s comparison. Those Chiefs started 9-0, then faded in the last seven games of the regular season (4-3), allowing 90 points in losses to Denver (45-27) and Minnesota (45-20). These Falcons are on the up-tick. They have won eight straight since a blowout loss at Philadelphia.

That said, the Saints obviously are capable of winning twice here. They are 10-4 and the defending champions. These teams are long-time division rivals. Home field tends to be an afterthought. But the difference between the Falcons and the Saints — and even the Eagles, New York Giants and Chicago Bears, to a degree – is the Falcons sense they aren’t being given the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe that’s a statement on franchise history. Maybe it’s just that some of their wins haven’t been overwhelming.

Regardless, when Dilfer said what he said, White blew up on Twitter, later commenting: “I just don’t like the fact that he said that about my team. I guess we’ll have to show him. … Everybody wants to doubt us. That’s fine. We’ll just keep winning and do what we’re supposed to do. It’s not about the other teams. We feel, whether we win or lose a game, it’s really up to us.”

Three months ago, the Falcons won at New Orleans 27-24 in overtime to improve to 2-1. We wondered about potential. Now they’re 12-2 and some still are wondering. Unfair?

“That’s cool,” Grimes said. “It just gives something extra out there, not that we need it.”

Trent Dilfer has absolutely no room to comment. He happened to be the QB on a team ran by Ray Lewis. He always champions Brett Favre every chance he gets. He is and idiot. I have no doubt that his name will be brought up once again as we are making our run to the Super Bowl.

Doubt them. Doubt them this week, doubt them against every team in the playoffs. Doubt them in Dallas.

They are already erasing the memories of (among others) Jerry Glanville, June Jones, Jeff George, Eugene Robinson, Jim Mora Jr., Bobby Petrino and, of course, Mikey Vick.

But when it’s all said and done, this team will hold up the trophy and erase all doubt and bad memories.

The Birds are just going to have to keep taking care of business all of the way to Dallas. Maybe then they can earn something north of Fox’s #3 announcing crew to call their games. Still can’t understand why the team with the best record in the NFC keeps drawing lower profile announce crews. Just a thought.

Jeff: I believe some of the critics who doubt the Falcons as a legitimate contender do so Because:
1. The majority of the doubters are from the highly populous regions where their readers pull for the Bears,Giants,Eagles,Patroits, etc. This group of media cannot stand to see a team like the Falcons being better than the teams they must be loyal and hype. Therefore they will look for every reason the can to discredit and downplay the Falcons success.
2. Fortunately the games are played on the field and there unless there is a complete colapse, the Falcons must be recognized as the champions of the NFC South and the team with the best record in the NFC.

“1. The majority of the doubters are from the highly populous regions where their readers pull for the Bears,Giants,Eagles,Patroits, etc.”
No, because the Falcons have once shown an ability to transcend their history… Then they promptly went out an laid a egg on the biggest stage in the sport…
“2. Fortunately the games are played on the field and there unless there is a complete colapse, the Falcons must be recognized as the champions of the NFC South and the team with the best record in the NFC.”
Yep, and if they (the Saints) pull a repeat of January 4, 1980. Don’t expect the naysayers to go silent into the night…

Really, the worse thing about the Falcons is that whole existence has evolved into trying to silence the ghosts of seasons past… Wow, it much like Dickens!

The job for the Falcons is very obvious. The stage is of their making.

Let them keep putting us down. Let them keep loving all over Vick, Brady, the Jets..whoever. This Falcons team loves the underdawg label. Last thing I want to hear is how we are the team to beat. In the NFL, if you want the big trophy, you have to beat whoever they put in front of you. Its gonna take an incredible effort to beat this team, especially in the playoffs at home. Remember, the media pegged the Dallas Cowboys to beat the Vikings for the NFC title at the beginning of the year. We all see how that worked out.’

GO FALCONS.

Dilfer is a jerk and self righteous dog. This Falcon team is the very essence of class and being built the right way. They are still a work in progress and will be even better next year. Home field advantage is huge. Bring on the Saints, bring on the Eagles and the criminal Mike Vick to the Georgia Dome and let’s get it on with that creep.

JSS: No disrespect to your opinions but how can a comparison of the accomplishments of the 2010 Falcons be made to a Falcons team 30 years ago? Totally different coaching and ownership along with where they play and the differing abilities of the players themselves.

Remarkable

We all must admit that the breaks have gone the Falcon’s way. In almost every game we have gotten calls, fumbles, and catches that could easily have gone the other way. The Falcons are a good team because they have found a way to win when they were behind, when the game was on the line, and when people outside of the Ga. Dome didn’t believe in them. The Falcon’s will be a great team if they believe in themselves, play tough and continue to win.
I hope to see them in Dallas but we must find a way to beat the Eagles. Motivation is there for one player on the Eagles and for an entire Falcons team. Who will seize the opportunity?

I don’t care if you’re a Falcons fan or a pure homer; nobody who has been a witness to Roddy White’s side shows (on and off the field) this season and especially this past week can make or respect that statement. Because as fans, you are making statements with the same bravado that were made leading up to that game (the 1980 Divisional Playoff). The Cowboys (of that era and even now) and their fans make what the Saints fans say about the Falcons seem like playground taunting… Falcons fans never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever learn… Some people seem to confuse that with being a “diehard fan.” This team is eerily similar to the 1980 team. They were balanced (in their mind); they beat the vast majority of the teams in front of them; but when pudding was pulled from the oven, it came back tasteless at the biggest meal… You people are obsessing over best record and that home field advantage. The lone glory of this franchise came at the expense of a team (the Minnesota Vikings) that hadn’t lost on their home field either… I’ve said it all along regarding this team, until the clock shows 0:00:00 in Dallas I will not waste a minute of belief in them…

No, but when they (the Patriots) beat the “chokers” of that era (The Cowher Steelers), the ears went up. There is Old Low Country saying among the Gullah about not having empathy even when the time has passed in the eyes of others. “You might not feel the pain, but your sons or their sons will feel the pain of a wicked tongue.”

Who cares what others say. We know what kind of team we have. This is a team of SUBSTANCE not FLASH. We’re the San Antonio Spurs of the NFL. Unlike the other teams in our conference we are SMART, DISCIPLINED, AND WELL COACHED which all equals a team of SUBSTANCE. We may not be BEST at on given category, but we are SOLID across the board. We unfortunately live in a society that only loves flash rather substance. We once had Flash, but the team had no substance and we saw what happened.

For all you stupid, insidious, pathetic band wagon Vick/Eagle fans and even for you New Orlean Aints fans here this story. Once upon a time in there was a team from Boston that played this team from St. Louis. The team from St. Louis was flashy, entertaining, and even former super bowl champion while the team from Boston was disciplined, boring, and were underdogs. The team from St. Louis was very popular with names like Warner, Faulk, Holt, and Bruce. The team from Boston had no names like Bruschi, Johnson, and a no named backup quarterback named Brady. The team from St. Louis came out as most teams did when being introduced, while the team from Boston came out as a TEAM. The team from Boston were big underdogs against the team from St. Louis. The point of this story for all of you not too smart Vick/Eagle fans and even you Aint fans should realize that football is a Team Sport and one player who may be good and even flashy cannot beat an entire team. I am not sure that the Eagles and Saints are as good as the Rams, but this Falcon team may be as good as that Patriot team. We’ll see. Go Falcons!

The NE Corridor (DC, Baltimore, Philly, NY, Boston), plus Chicago and Dallas dominate the NFL media and have a ridiculously condescending view of anything outside these cities and / or anything that doesnt have anything to do with Bretty Favre. To wit, on DC radio the other day one of the radio announcers professed that his top 3 teams in the NFL right now in order were: Patriots, Eagles, Falcons.

When asked why he put the Eagles ahead of the Falcons, he proclaimed: “because of the division the Falcons play in. They dont have to compete week in and week out in the NFC East.”

Lets forget for a second that no one competes “week in and week out” in the same division. You play 10 games against non-division foes, but never mind.

You mean the vicious NFC East with the Redskins? And Cowboys? Both 5 – 9 at the time (the Cowboys have since lost to the Cardinals, who are the bottom of the worst conference in football). No, the Falcons just have to play in the NFC South with three playoff contenders.

No awareness of the idiocy of the comment. None.

Watch Mike Smith on the sidelines during a game. He never loses his cool; when something goes good or bad he is already plotting his next move and is almost oblivious to the play that has just taken place. This team has taken on that part of his personality and absolutely refuses to get rattled over misfortune or overly excited about success. That ability to remain calm and collected while everyone else is going nuts enables this team to continue to succeed: the coach and the players have a single-minded focus on doing whatever it takes to succeed.

Let the national media continue to ignore the Falcons: it doesn’t matter, it has nothing to do with our preparation or winning the next game. Let the trash talkers continue to spew: it doesn’t matter, it has nothing to do with our preparation or winning the next game.

Mike Smith and this group of players know how good they can be and what is at stake. They also know they have yet to play a complete game and are on the brink of home field advantage throughout the playoffs. This team does nothing but get better each week and is beginning to peak at the perfect time.

I hope the Falcons come to play tomorrow with an absolutely killer instinct and a commitment to leaving everything on the field for as long as it takes to get a win (same goes for EVERY game). Tweets and bulletin board material coming from one of our own players was disappointing; up to now the Falcons had generally avoided such unnecessary distractions. Obviously the Saints, as much as we can’t stand them, are a very good team as well (To forgive your enemy his virtues; that is the greater miracle.–Voltaire); it will be a tough game to win regardless of the venue.

If I were Mike Smith or any other NFL coach (which I’m not) I’d ban all tweeting, and any behavior by a player I deemed to be to the detriment of the team would be called on the carpet and addressed quickly and decisively; there’s no place for chest-thumping, especially before the outcome of a game or season is decided. I really hope that Roddy White is sincere about his apology over the Twitter issue; the fact remains he should have had the common sense and self-restraint not to have been so stupid in the first place.

That said, I hope he and the Falcons come out and win this Sunday, and keep doing so until the Lombardi Trophy comes home to Atlanta.

There are those that are smart and then there are those who think they’re smart. Clearly “JSS” and “Choke” fall in the latter category with their, respectively, pessimistic and irritating, nonsensical banter.

This Falcons team is well coached, disciplined and fundamentally sound at their turnover ratio, penalties, scoring defense, third and fourth down conversion ratio, and comeback history this season exemplifies. However, they are not invincible! Indeed I would tender that the Falcons are capable of beating anyone in the playoffs–even New England in the Super Bowl–and yet I wouldn’t be too shocked should they get bounced in the first round if somehow that play a close game and come up a little short.

I have only one prediction…that, starting tomorrow night, I will enjoy this special season game by game and I will truly cherish the moment should we earn our way to Dallas. Win or lose along the way, we finally have a QB and many other hardworking, dedicated and truly decent men in uniform and our coaching staff that I as an Atlanta Falcon fan and proud to be associated.

Matt CHOKE Ryan,

You said:

“The day CHOKE…….

- Goes to the championship game
- Goes to the pro bowl as a non-alternate
All in the same season, if he does that, which I know he will NEVER do, I will disappear from these blogs F-O-R-E-V-E-R.”

I think you’re a coward! I also think you’re pretty dumb if you think no one can figure out what you did?

You know that Ryan has a great chance to both win a playoff game and make it to the NFC Championship Game THIS season but he will be outvoted for the pro bowl.

So, here’s my challenge, coward. Will you honor your pledge not to return if Matt Ryan makes it to the NFC Championship Game–which, of course, you idiot, he would have to win a playoff game to do so anyway–this season and leave out the 3rd requirement of attending the pro bowl as a non alternate?

The Pats, Eagles, & Saints are real good, but I’m sick of hearing about the Jets & Giants b/c they have NY in their name. The Jets seem to have a lot bigger bark than bite, their still young and have some maturing to do. The Giants are fading at the end of the season just like they did last yr. They won’t be any good unless Eli & Company stop turning the ball over, and Green Bay just destroyed their D. The Steelers are good, and the Ravens are good, just lack consistency.

What you delusional fans don’t realize is, as easily as you received all those breaks, the lucky bounces, the missed opponent field goals, the pick then the strip, the ball can bounce in the other direction.

That 12-2 record is just a great big mirage. At the drop of a hat, the Falcons can go on a 3 game losing streak, and for all that crap like “rise up”, will be just another early vacation and waiting for the annual draft celebration.

Whenever Ryan needed a conversion on third down—even on fourth down—he couldn’t go wrong by looking for Gonzalez.

Now I’ve confirmed what most everyone already suspected…you’re a cowardly sort who desperately seeks the attention from others to fill that huge whole of inadequacy. All you can do is quote scores and statistics from the past to try to make everyone believe in your predictions, and yet, here the Falcons are 12-2 and you look utterly ridiculous. You’ve been saying all season how bad they are and you have been wrong 12 times and counting; you call Ryan a “choke” yet he has almost never “choked” when his team needed him.

I see that Trent Dilfer compared the team to Kansas City. I would compare the Falcons to the Cowboys in 2007. That one resembles the Falcons better. They were 13-3 to end the season and were playing well and winning games throughout the year, yet, they lost their first game played to Seattle.

The bad news is that winning tomorrow night won’t change the perception of this team. I mean think about it – we already beat the Saints in New Orleans and you STILL have idiots on this blog claiming the Saints are better, even after a season where they got ripped by Arizona (??) and Cleveland AT HOME. It’s hilarious. We beat the Packers, the Ravens, and have put together a 12-2 record despite having a tougher schedule than the Saints.

But the good news is, who cares? We’re 12-2 and going to get the #1 seed. That pretty much speaks for itself. And we’re built to be good for a very long time instead of just being built around a single great player (yeah, i’m looking at you Brees). So regardless of what happens in 2010, there’s reason to be excited about this team for years to come, which is more than I can say for a lot of other teams in this league.

What I love about all the Falcons critics on this board is that NOT ONE of them can give a single stat or fact to support the notion the Falcons don’t deserve their 12-2 record. Saints1Fan above says that we’re just like the 2007 Cowboys, but doesn’t bother to explain why. That comes from the “Trent Dilfer school of logic” – say what you hope happens, but don’t bother factually supporting it because you can’t. New Orleans fans talk about “luck” as if they haven’t had a ton of it this season and last season, and as if they weren’t lucky to even still be in that game in overtime. If a single punt doesn’t accidentally graze DeCoud’s leg, you morons wouldn’t have even been in that game.

I know, reality sucks when you have to look at it both ways, doesn’t it?

I am consistently amused at how Saints fans have just sort of glossed over getting beat by the Falcons on their homefield already this year. They talk about how much we suck, so it must not say much about their team when such a terrible Falcons squad can walk into New Orleans and beat them on their turf. I dunno, for some reason i’m not that afraid of a team who got dismantled by Arizona and Cleveland, two teams who won’t even sniff the playoffs.

Let’s just assume that the Saints blow the Falcons out tomorrow, 42-10. I believe that will be enough notice that they are the better team. I didn’t say anything about your record. Your record is what it is. Your team is what it is. You win the NFC South and get the 1 seed and the Saints get the 5 seed. The Saints play St. Louis in St. Louis. I’m assuming the 6th seed will lose to the 3rd seed. If that happens, the Saints come and see you again in the GA Dome. If the 6th seed wins, it will probably be Green Bay, which would come to the GA Dome. Either way, I see the Falcons losing their first playoff game. I’m not being a hater. I just see three teams capable of blowing up the scoreboard on the Falcons and that is the Saints, Green Bay, and Philadelphia. Forget what happened in the earlier games. Playoff football is very different.

Delusional Falcons fans……………..

“This is an egg and this is your brains on crack” :)

You have to be on crack if you believe you are better than a team that has D-O-M-I-N-A-T-E-D you every freakin season except 2005, which was won by the qb that now is the starter in Philly.

I mean it hasn’t even been close:

2008 27-14
2009 34-7 (Falcons scored on last play of game)
2010 31-17

That’s a combined score of 92-38!

That is just plain PATHETIC. You must be on crack if you think you have a chance of scoring more than 17 points, much less give the Eagles a game :)

When you have a team that averages:

- 400 plus yards per game
- 29.2 points per game
- 4th in rushing
- 6th in passing
- 1st in plays of 40 or more yards (19)
- 1st in plays of 80 or more (3)
- 1st in plays of 60 or more (8)

I could go on and on and on. Falcons fans, your only hope is to lose in the first round, as usual, so that you don’t get EMBARRASSED in the house that Vick is leasing to the CHOKE :)

But he’s (Dilfer) right about one thing, the Chiefs ran into someone who was equally as hot coming off their 1st round bye: The Indianapolis Colts! I guess the media and some local sports writers can’t count. ESPN is saying that if the Saints beats the Falcons, they will still win the Southeast Conference???? Are you kidding me????? Whether the Falcons win tonight or not, it’s the game next week with Carolina that will determine if they have home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Saints need this win to ensure they could finish 12-4 and have the home field advantage in the wild card playoff (first game). I guess most of these folks can’t give up their political party affiliation when determining who wins fairly or who they won’t to win. The Falcons however mush beat Carolina to keep Philadelphia from forcing them to play there, so winning one of the last two is absolutely necessary.

Oh joy, the return of Matt “Choke” Ryan. I can attest that he’s been blogging here since at least last season. I actually thought he’s been using a few different other names. To my knowledge he’s not so much a Philadelphia fan but wants Mike Vick to come give him some man love 24/7. He hates the Falcons for having the audacity to release a convicted felon and draft another QB to give the franchise a chance to move on. Mick Vick was 2-2 in the playoffs as a Falcons starter, those two loses both coming at the hands of Philadelphia. He also led the Falcons to ONE division title, ONE.
Mike Vick has had a great 2/3 season. He’s a great player and has matured. Good for him, better for Philadelphia. Quoting stats and final scores as if those matter at all in the future is folly. The Falcons are bound to beat Philadelphia sooner or later. The same can be said about Atlanta’s homefield record of late. One thing I can say about Vick, if he continues to run like he has been, he’s going to get really hurt. He already missed a few games this year doing that.
As far as the Falcons being “lucky”, it takes all kinds to win. New Orleans was the “luckiest” team in the world last year with the all the pick 6s and other turnovers. Last year they went to a last 15-year average of minus 3 turnovers to plus 18. This year they are plus 13. Everybody likes to point at the Saints missed field goal as all luck. True, it was a very short field goal, not much longer than an extra point. The fact remains that the Saints did near nothing during the game save one 75-yard TD play on complete broken coverage and a TD set up by an 70-yard punt return to around the 4 yard line. That was the Saints offense that day. The Falcons dominated time of possession and yards from scrimmage.
Matt “Choke” Ryan is a hater. He loves Vick and now hates the Falcons for ever having the audacity to release him. Last year when Ryan was playing less effectively, he was all over this blog on how he was essentially the same as Tim Couch, Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf, pick your first round bust. With all the 4th qtr comebacks just this year he needs to change his name.

We’ll find out soon enough is Matt Ryan is a choker. What we do know is, so far: he doesn’t flip off the fans; he hasn’t gotten caught with stolen watches, pot, dead bulldogs, etc, and hasn’t served a single day in the pokey.

I am inspired by Mike Vick’s comeback and his play this season for the Eagles, and believe he has changed his life.

However, it’s silly and petty to call Ryan a choker when you consider how many wins (and comeback wins) he has led this team to in almost 3 seasons. Ryan’s only playoff game was a loss, true, but AZ was better team, and came within seconds of a Super Bowl win.

Hopefully, the Falcons advance in the playoffs, and “CHOKE” has to change his name!

I’ll be watching the game from Japan, through my computer, starting at 10:30am. I can only watch the first half cause I gotta hop on the train and teach English during the second half. I’m wondering how I’m gonna feel tomorrow afternoon, when the game is finished. Will I feel some kind of redemption with a Falcons win that not only makes a statement but gets us 1st seed since 1980? I was that kid in 1980 in the backyards on the south side, down past the airport, wearing either my William Andrews or #10, playing tackle the man with the ball, happy that Church finished at 12 cause I knew that God wanted us to watch football at one. That kid is still alive and happy as hell that these Falcons are 12-2. Nobody can appreciate it more than actually the players, but when you grew up living and breathing your Sunday heroes, and watching them fail miserably, morally, at the highest level, you come to appreciate something more than wins and losses. And that’s just having the opportunity to play the game. We are there folks. Regardless of what happens 24 hours from now, the Falcons are the Class of the NFC and it only took three short years for this coach to get us there, and only 30 years for this team to rise up, rise up again.

Go Falcons!!

FALCONSSTINK? Atlanta is smelly? Really?
1998 – Minisota was already thinking about making plans for The Super Bowl, after leading the game by almost two touchdowns.
Last Year – Nobody gave the Saints much chance. They are a class act. I’d rather see the Saints vs Falcons in the NFC title game, than Vickiggles.
1980 – The Falcoms had how much of a lead, and lost. One play at a time, one series at a time, one quarter at a time, one half at a time, and one game at a time. We’ve won nothing yet.
Rise Up!

It looked like the saints team choked, in the last meeting of the two teams.
Falcons looked like they tried to give the victory to the saints, after the Falcons had kicked their behinds for 3/4 of the game.
But, the saints choked on the ball.

The 1980 team was great, but keep in mind, they were playing against Danny White in the playoffs…and the only other QB that could pull off his feat in that nightmarish playoff game (among potential NFC div round opponents) is Matty Ice. So much for your comparison.

Deion Sanders made an interesting point on NFL Network last night. He asked “What if the Falcons decide to go vanilla in this game?”

That would make sense, and sounds like a Belichick move to throw off the opponent. Atlanta knows that they only have to win one of their last two games, so tonight’s game is about nothing more than something to give the media more reason to hate on the Falcons, regardless of what they do in this game.

If the Saints go up 10-0 or 14-0, I’d call off the dogs and bring in the backups, knowing that home-field advantage is still obtainable regardless of what the Saints do next week. The more this team stays under the radar the better chance they have of beating up on teams when no one expects it.

If the Falcons lose tonight, which is very possible, it will sting…but in the grand scheme, it will mean very little once the Falcons dispatch the Panthers next week. From a psychological perspective, a loss by the Falcons would ensure they avoid the “hard to beat a team three times in one year” stigma, assuming they meet the Saints in the playoffs. Having said that, I hate looking for positives from a potential loss. It would sure be nice to take care of business tonight and get a few players some rest and avoid any key injuries.

Jeff, here’s the problem. The Falcons have posted far more losing seasons than winning ones over the past 44 years of their existence. Then, of those few winning campaigns that resuled in trips to the playoffs, each postseason appearance has ended in a humiliating defeat. Even their 1998 team, the best one they have ever produced until this current roster, suffered a somewhat lopsided defeat in the SB.

Thus, I’m afraid that, despite how incredibly well they have played and how often they have won this season, the only way these 2010 Falcons will earn the widespread respect that they deserve is by winning the Super Bowl convincingly. In other words, there cannot be a bad call by an official or some other fluke occurrence that critics can point to as credit for their victory.

All that said, I believe that the Falcons will beat NO tonight, and, yes, I really do believe Atlanta will win the SB in February. Then they will finally get the widespread respect that they so richly deserve. Mr. Blank, TD, Smitty and all their players have done an absolutely amazing job at turning this long-suffering franchise into a legitimate winner.

GO FALCONS!!! THIS IS YOUR YEAR!!!

coach smith is a good coach, the falcons running game will probably be slowed down tonight. the birds will have to win this one with passing game and special teams. any ryan interceptions thrown tonight will be very very bad news. our secondary wont be able to stop the saints for long.once brees gets warmed up it wont be pretty. Falcons game plan score- fast – early – and often and nooo turn-overs. if they get 14 points down its over.this could turn into an epic battle or a blow-out.it certainly has a play-off atmosphere about it. I cant wait for the game to get started. forcast calls for a cool brees to blow into town so we better turm the heat up in the dome.

The Falcons are for real. ESPN and others can talk about the Eagles, (who btw were 11-5 last year, 10-4 this year so far. What’s the big deal). They can talk about the Packers, Giants, whomever, but in the end the Falcons will be holding up the SUPER BOWL trophy and THEN they will talk about them, or make excuses why the other teams they love lost.

Every game comes down to a play or two. These two teams are very equally matched and it can go either way for sure but to say the complete rubbish he said was just rediculous. He talked like beating the Ravens, Bucs twice, Green Bay and winning 8 straight was just luck. What a dolt.

My prediction for tonight’s game: New Orleans Saints 30 – Atlanta Falcons 24/ Drew Brees lights up the Falcons secondary. The Birds will beat Carolina and then host either the Eagles or Saints at home.

Should the Falcons and Saints meet in the playoffs it could go either way. Still, I get a strong “2003 Kansas City Chiefs” vibe from this team(KC went 13-3 and was eliminated in their first playoff game) so I’d look for the New Orleans Saints to defeat the Atlanta Falcons again, 30-27 on a late field goal.

Super Bowl picks: NO Saints or Philly Eagles Vs New England Patriots with the Pats winning it by at least ten points.

I say the Packers will play the Eagles in the first round, beat them, then the Packers back to Atlanta to play the Falcons in the second round. Falcons will play the Bears (at Ga. Dome) for NFC title and then the Patriots in the SB. Falcons by 3 in the Super bowl.

That is the point of tonight’s game. Falcons have had trouble with Brees and the stated weakness on the team by everyone is their secondary. Also remember all the doubters last year about New Orleans, everyone liked the Vikings because of Favre. Now that the Saints won the SB, they are in the “circle” – teams like the Pats, Steelers, etc. that “experts” always like.

2] Saints thrashing Falcons in playoffs [after losing 2 in regular season]

This could be the most incredible and difficult run to the Super Bowl ever or another chapter in the Falcons’ curse as a franchise on the verge of greatness. Ignore this game tonight. Regardless of the outcome, (the Falcons will beat the Panthers and secure the number 1 seed), the playoffs are shaping up to look like this.

The best two teams by record are in the same division, Falcons and Saints (what are the odds? Curse or Blessing?) Saints get the 5 seed. Saints play the worst team in the playoffs (NFC West winner) in the first round and easily win. That puts them back in Atlanta for the first playoff game. Game one: Atlanta vs. the defending Super Bowl Champions. If they win, incredible feat but more to come. If they lose, another disappointing exit akin to 1980 vs. Dallas. Game two: Atlanta vs. Philadelphia. (I am predicting Philly wins either one or two games to get to the NFC Championship game. Not too far fetched at this point) If they win, the demons from the Mike Vick era are exorcised. If they lose, I don’t even want to think of it. Talk about a kick in the face. SuperBowl: Atlanta vs. New England. (Another prediction not too far fetched at this point). If they win, Atlanta just went through arguably the most difficult teams ever to win a Super Bowl. All is good in the world. Osama is captured, the Mayans were wrong, the words Loserville and Atlanta are never uttered again. If they lose; well it was to one of the greatest teams of the past decade. But it will still suck.
