The Falcons' Roddy White never fails to entertain -- and here he goes again.
(2 p.m.: OK. this has officially mutated. The first update below includes Roddy White’s latest Tweets. The second update includes a selection of sanitized-for-your-protection Tweets from readers to @RoddyWhiteTV. I can’t reprint many but you’re free to do a search from your Twitter account, if you have one.)
(7 p.m. I’ve accumulated most of what’s below and put it together for a print column, which I’ve pasted below. The only real new bit of information is a statement from the Falcons. I also chuckled when I just read Roddy’s most recent Tweet: “Can the AJC gave[sic] me a great Christmas present this year and stop posting my tweets I would luv that.” I believe we need to have a discussion.)
In the old days, this was called bulletin board material: a player or coach saying something that ended up in a newspaper story and, literally, was pinned to a bulletin board in the other team’s locker room. (And yes, I’ve seen it.)
But now, we’re more likely to have Twitter wars.
It’s fairly mild so far, but things are heating up between the Falcons’ Roddy White and the New Orleans Saints, who come to the Georgia Dome Monday night.
This actually started after ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer, took to a video blog to compare the Falcons to the 2003 Kansas Chiefs, who went 13-3 and then were bounced in the first-round of the playoffs. Dilfer said the Falcons “are not indestructible” at home and he went on to say the Saints could very well win Monday night’s game, then come back and beat the Falcons again in the playoffs in the Georgia Dome.
Here’s the video:
White responded via Twitter, @RoddyWhiteTV: “No chance in hell the Aints come into the dome and win once trent dilfer”
White, who’s been known to talk some smack on his amusing video blog site, RoddyWhite.TV, also Tweeted: “The aints fans are so rude … we shall see monday night.” And: “Yall [New Orleans] fans keep talking making it worst for those guys tht got to guard me cause yall don’t. lol.”
Will Smith, the Saints defensive end, responded on Twitter and it was subsequently re-Tweeted by Reggie Bush: “Wondering how @roddywhitetv has the audacity to call us AINT’S.” And he attached this photo:

UPDATE: Here’s the latest Roddy White Tweets. OK, now he might be taking things a little too far:
11:48 a.m.: “I don’t know why everybody mad for the saints I made a comment on wht trent dilfer said on tv it had nothing to do with them”
12:03 p.m.: “The grace of god gave them tht championship so tht city wouldn fall apart now and now they think they hot [bleep] in … http://tmi.me/4ugiT“
12:04: p.m.: “The first time we played them their coach gone say after we won the game thts a good win for yall like the saints are the colts”
12:05 p.m.: “The saints win one championship and want to go crazy well yall [bleep] aint winning this year we gone make sure tht doesn’t happen.”
UPDATE II: Here’s a selection of comments Tweeted directly to @RoddyWhiteTV (not fixing typos, just taking out profanity):
@fleurdelele: Among the comments: “Lemme see your [rear] go thru what we in Nola went thru after Katrina…then try & talk [crap] about us!”
@ goodolcharlie: @roddywhiteTV dude you talk more crap then ocho well this monday the saints are going to shut you up.

@ RuRu69: Roddy…GET OFF TWITTER AND GO STUDY FOR THE GAME!
@ Nader723: Sean Payton is in the locker room right now with @roddywhiteTV picture on the board saying this [bleep] gotta get SMASHED Monday

I realize none of this constitutes a burning building. But it is amusing to see athletes take their smack talk to the electronic world when they’re often so careful about what they say in front of their locker.
Also this: Is something Trent Dilfer says really worth getting upset about?
♦
Print column
Athletes and celebrities complain all the time about the 24/7 media world today, and they certainly have a point. If you are, say, Roddy White, you can’t go anywhere in public without running the risk that some guy, excessively fueled on Budweiser and Jack Daniel’s and carrying a flip-cam, is going to bait you into saying or doing something stupid.
Two minutes later, we have the latest YouTube sensation.
But there’s another side to the instant media world and we’re witnessing it this week. Athletes and celebrities are fascinated by Twitter. What they wouldn’t dare say in front of their lockers, they don’t hesitate to bang out in 140 characters or less.
In their work environment, athletes often have an automatic filter between their brain and their mouth (though sometimes it comes in the form of the team’s public relations director standing next to them during interviews). But when they’re at home on the couch, they have no filter between their brains and their finger tips.
Which brings us back to Roddy White.
Dude: Do yourself a favor. Take your hands off the keyboard. Better to use them for catching something other than flak.
White, warming up in his own special way for the Falcons’ game against the New Orleans Saints Monday night, ignited a Twitter war Wednesday. White is an amusing and entertaining guy, and it’s not the first time he has engaged in a little smack talk on his Twitter site (@RoddyWhiteTV) or on his video blog (RoddyWhite.TV). But he jumped the rails a bit this time.
This actually started after ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer, in a commentary, compared the Falcons to the 2003 Kansas Chiefs, who went 13-3 and then were bounced in the first-round of the playoffs. Dilfer said the Falcons “are not indestructible” at home. He went on to say the Saints could win Monday night’s game, and then come back and beat the Falcons again in the playoffs in the Georgia Dome.
White took to Twitter for his response: “No chance in hell the Aints come into the dome and win once trent dilfer.”
No real harm, right?
Then it got fun. Saints defensive end Will Smith responded on Twitter: “Wondering how @roddywhitetv has the audacity to call us AINT’S.” And for punctuation, he attached a photo of his Super Bowl ring. (That was re-Tweeted by Reggie Bush.)
Still no real harm, right?
Then White sent out the following three Tweets (not cleaning up the typos or grammar here):
“I don’t know why everybody mad for the saints I made a comment on wht trent dilfer said on tv it had nothing to do with them.”
“The grace of god gave them tht championship so tht city wouldn fall apart now and now they think they hot [bleep] …”
“The first time we played them their coach gone say after we won the game thts a good win for yall like the saints are the Colts.”
That second comment was by far the most inflammatory because it invoked the city of New Orleans. It touched off a flurry of comments to White’s Twitter account. Some came from Falcons’ fans supporting him, but most were from angry Saints, many including profanity.
Among the comments: “Lemme see your [rear] go thru what we in Nola went thru after Katrina…then try & talk [crap] about us!”
White was not available for comment Wednesday, which was a players’ day off for the Falcons.
Reggie Roberts, the Falcons’ vice president of football communications, e-mailed a statement, saying only: “We simply think this was a case of one of our guys having fun on his personal Twitter account. The fact of the matter is that Monday night’s game will be played by two of the NFL’s better teams and the outcome will be decided on the field.”
I realize none of this constitutes a burning building. But it is curious how athletes take their smack talk to the electronic world when they’re so careful about what they actually say.
Oh, and there’s this: Is something Trent Dilfer says really worth getting upset about?

Nick you sure are sensitive for a football fan, by the way Brett is still waiting for his ring. “One Forced throw” dude, if the old man does not make that really bad throw Vikes kick the field goal and are on to the SB. By the way to all those chicken bleep falcon fans, RISE UP quit worrying about Roddy we need to have the nuts do say those things if we want to beat the Saints or Eagles or Chicago. Roddy is an incredible receiver! Unfortunately, he’s also dumb as a box of rocks.
I’ll never forget the “Free Mike Vick” he had scrawled across his shirt on MNF, and the personal fouls and trash talk lately are starting to remind me what a dumb homeboy he really is. Roddy needs to keep his mouth shut, stay off Twitter, and let his receptions do the talking.

Basically tackle? He ran into him. Big friggen whoop. And way to read one part. I said there were several other games where they got fluky amounts of penalties, like against the Dolphins, and they had the most penalties called against other teams last year, and very few themselves. They mirror the Falcons this year in a lot of ways. But my point is you CANNOT talk about flukes on the Falcons when you support the Aints.

If The Falcons focus, and do not get “caught-up in (new-found celebrity).. and possibly add some new wrinkles like more pass-rush
(Maybe some players actually “improve” at WR, DE, and the defense in-general.. Then, this will be The Falcons year..)
The 98 team was a better team than this one..
They scored quickly, and punished good NFL teams early, and often.
They put heat on opposing QBs.
Still.. the new-found “celebrity” and “the after-party lifestyle” and “Biscayne Boulevard” caught them in the end..
At least the 98 Falcons reached The Superbowl.
I could be wrong, but The Falcons may need another pass-rusher at DE, and a WR, or RB with quick-strike speed. Or may maybe, more plays to make their current players into what they need.

You guys cannot cover White. He is taht good!!!!
The Flacons have it, starting with the upper management, then the coaches, and last but not least the players. All good. Go Falcons, go home saints.

Zero, I agree there. Abraham leads DEs with 13 sacks, but we definitely need someone opposite his side to rush, and I’d love having a speedy back like Darren Sproles since we’ll be getting rid of Norwood this year most likely…even though I love the dude, he’s injured soooo much.

What makes you think I’m sensitive? I’m perfectly calm. It just takes a lot of work to right all the wrong statements being typed around here.
Fact is the 2009 Saints was a dominant football team that won with a great passing offense, an opportunistic defense, and a very good running game to close with. They did that from Week 1 to February. And they won 11 of their 19 total games by 10 or more points. They were also the first NFC team to ever start a season 13-0. They finished the season with the best record in the NFL with a win over the only other team with the same record.
Until the Falcons accomplish more than “1 game from HFA”, there’s nothing to discuss. The Falcons haven’t done jack yet. If they do, I’ll give them credit for it.

One good thing about Roddy’s Tweets..
He better back them up…or he’s is going to pay in the media and elsewhere..
Locally and nationally.
He must play so well that he absorbs a double-team through-out the playoffs, for others to make plays on offense (if Ryan trusts someone other than Tony Gonzalez regularly.)

I couldn’t make out what Roddy was saying in half of his “tweets”…never thought I’d use that word. It’s really immature and extraordinarily silly, but he is now putting himself on center stage. I hope he is just doing this to hype himself up, because if he doesn’t come to play on MNF, he’s going to give a lot of fuel to Dilfer and Saint’s fans who blasted him.

To Nick, the Falcons have beat 5 winning teams. You’ve beat 2. The Falcons 2 losses came to winning teams. Your four came to half winners, half losers. The Falcons have more points scored than the Saints on the season, and less allowed. The Falcons have a 11-1 common opponents record counting the Saints, where the Saints are 8-4. The Falcons have a higher TO differential. The Falcons are top in TOP. The Falcons will beat the Saints Monday night.

11 wins of 10 or more points. That’s not a fluke.

Keep talking your trash, Saints fans. Just remember, the people you stab in the back on your way up the Super Bowl ladder are the same ones you pass by in your fall from grace. Who started the trash talk? That isn’t a Saints player (thank God) featured in this article.
How can we stab opposing teams in the back? That implies we were ever on the same side. That makes zero sense.

If the Falcons lose, he’s gonna love smearing them more..
Honeslty, The Saints are good enough to do what he says.. Defense cannot pressure Brees, and this secondary gives-up too much. No INTS gainst the good NFL QBs and offenses. The Falcons will need it.

By Nakia Hogan, The Times-Picayune
Before the season began, many prognosticators picked the Atlanta Falcons to challenge the Saints for supremacy in the NFC South. They apparently were right. With two games remaining in the regular season, the Falcons (12-2) have already clinched a playoff berth. But with a victory Monday night at the Georgia Dome or in the season finale against the Carolina Panthers (2-12), the Falcons can wrap up the NFC South title and the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. History says the Falcons, who’ve already beaten the Saints 27-24 in overtime at the Superdome in Week 3, have a better than average chance of pulling off that feat. Atlanta has won seven straight home games and is 19-3 in the Georgia Dome under Coach Mike Smith. But the Falcons’ last home loss came last season against the Saints, something Saints fans are hoping for a repeat of to keep the team’s division-title dreams alive.
FALCONS OFFENSE
Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan is an MVP candidate. He is seldom flummoxed in the pocket. He has completed 62.7 percent of his passes for 3,321 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Ryan had avoided mistakes for much of the season, but after throwing just five picks in the first 11 games, he has thrown four picks in the past three games. Receiver Roddy White is a dangerous weapon. He leads the NFL with 106 catches for 1,284 yards and eight touchdowns. Tight end Tony Gonzalez is almost equally as reliable, with 62 receptions for 591 yards and six scores. He was especially effective in Week 3 against the Saints when he beat their cornerbacks, safeties and linebackers for eight catches for 110 yard and a 13-yard touchdown. Running back Michael Turner ranks fifth in the NFL with 1,256 yards and 11 touchdowns.
FALCONS DEFENSE
Atlanta’s defense has been solid if not spectacular, ranking seventh in points allowed and 15th in yards allowed. Defensive end John Abraham, one of the league’s elite pass rushers, has 12 sacks, third-most in the NFL. Abraham beat Saints left tackle Jermon Bushrod for a sack when the teams met Sept. 26. Linebacker Curtis Lofton is the Falcons’ leading tackler with 107. Although the Falcons have been susceptible to the pass, ranking 20th. Safety William Moore and cornerback Brent Grimes are playmakers in the secondary. Moore has five interceptions and 60 tackles. Grimes has five interceptions and 22 pass breakups with 73 tackles.
FALCONS SPECIAL TEAMS
Kick returner Eric Weems warrants extra attention from coverage units. He averages 28.5 yards per return and has returned one for a touchdown. His 11.7-yard average on punt returns is better than average. Kicker Matt Bryant has been consistent, making 27 of 30 attempts, with a long of 51 yards. Punter Michael Koenen is averaging 40.4 yards an attempt.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Sept. 26, 2010 at Superdome
Minutes after Saints kicker Garrett Hartley missed a potential winning 29-yard field goal attempt in overtime, Bryant booted a 46-yard field goal to lift Atlanta to the victory. Ryan passed for 228 yards and touchdown passes to White and Gonzalez and Turner rushed for 114 yards and a score to hand the Saints their first loss of the season.
WORTH REPEATING
“Our guys are aware of the situation. We have said many times we like where we’re at and we know where we’re at and we know what we have to do. Again, I think just like we’ve tried to approach every game, it’s really not about our opponent; it’s about us and going out and playing as well as we possibly can play. If we do that we’re going to like the outcome and we’re going to look up and like where we’re at.” — Coach Mike Smith on the prospects of the Falcons clinching the NFC South and home-field advantage
