Roddy White battles Saints and Dilfer via Twitter (Final update: I hope)

Roddy White never fails to entertain -- and here he goes again.

The Falcons' Roddy White never fails to entertain -- and here he goes again.

(2 p.m.: OK. this has officially mutated. The first update below includes Roddy White’s latest Tweets. The second update includes a selection of sanitized-for-your-protection Tweets from readers to @RoddyWhiteTV. I can’t reprint many but you’re free to do a search from your Twitter account, if you have one.)

(7 p.m. I’ve accumulated most of what’s below and put it together for a print column, which I’ve pasted below. The only real new bit of information is a statement from the Falcons. I also chuckled when I just read Roddy’s most recent Tweet: “Can the AJC gave[sic] me a great Christmas present this year and stop posting my tweets I would luv that.” I believe we need to have a discussion.)

In the old days, this was called bulletin board material: a player or coach saying something that ended up in a newspaper story and, literally, was pinned to a bulletin board in the other team’s locker room. (And yes, I’ve seen it.)

But now, we’re more likely to have Twitter wars.

It’s fairly mild so far, but things are heating up between the Falcons’ Roddy White and the New Orleans Saints, who come to the Georgia Dome Monday night.

This actually started after ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer, took to a video blog to compare the Falcons to the 2003 Kansas Chiefs, who went 13-3 and then were bounced in the first-round of the playoffs. Dilfer said the Falcons “are not indestructible” at home and he went on to say the Saints could very well win Monday night’s game, then come back and beat the Falcons again in the playoffs in the Georgia Dome.

Here’s the video:

White responded via Twitter, @RoddyWhiteTV: “No chance in hell the Aints come into the dome and win once trent dilfer”

White, who’s been known to talk some smack on his amusing video blog site, RoddyWhite.TV, also Tweeted: “The aints fans are so rude … we shall see monday night.” And: “Yall [New Orleans] fans keep talking making it worst for those guys tht got to guard me cause yall don’t. lol.”

Will Smith, the Saints defensive end, responded on Twitter and it was subsequently re-Tweeted by Reggie Bush: “Wondering how @roddywhitetv has the audacity to call us AINT’S.” And he attached this photo:

UPDATE: Here’s the latest Roddy White Tweets. OK, now he might be taking things a little too far:

11:48 a.m.: “I don’t know why everybody mad for the saints I made a comment on wht trent dilfer said on tv it had nothing to do with them”

12:03 p.m.: “The grace of god gave them tht championship so tht city wouldn fall apart now and now they think they hot [bleep] in … http://tmi.me/4ugiT

@ RuRu69: Roddy…GET OFF TWITTER AND GO STUDY FOR THE GAME!

@ Nader723: Sean Payton is in the locker room right now with @roddywhiteTV picture on the board saying this [bleep] gotta get SMASHED Monday

I realize none of this constitutes a burning building. But it is amusing to see athletes take their smack talk to the electronic world when they’re often so careful about what they say in front of their locker.

Also this: Is something Trent Dilfer says really worth getting upset about?

Print column

Athletes and celebrities complain all the time about the 24/7 media world today, and they certainly have a point. If you are, say, Roddy White, you can’t go anywhere in public without running the risk that some guy, excessively fueled on Budweiser and Jack Daniel’s and carrying a flip-cam, is going to bait you into saying or doing something stupid.

Two minutes later, we have the latest YouTube sensation.

But there’s another side to the instant media world and we’re witnessing it this week. Athletes and celebrities are fascinated by Twitter. What they wouldn’t dare say in front of their lockers, they don’t hesitate to bang out in 140 characters or less.

In their work environment, athletes often have an automatic filter between their brain and their mouth (though sometimes it comes in the form of the team’s public relations director standing next to them during interviews). But when they’re at home on the couch, they have no filter between their brains and their finger tips.

Which brings us back to Roddy White.

Dude: Do yourself a favor. Take your hands off the keyboard. Better to use them for catching something other than flak.

White, warming up in his own special way for the Falcons’ game against the New Orleans Saints Monday night, ignited a Twitter war Wednesday. White is an amusing and entertaining guy, and it’s not the first time he has engaged in a little smack talk on his Twitter site (@RoddyWhiteTV) or on his video blog (RoddyWhite.TV). But he jumped the rails a bit this time.

This actually started after ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer, in a commentary, compared the Falcons to the 2003 Kansas Chiefs, who went 13-3 and then were bounced in the first-round of the playoffs. Dilfer said the Falcons “are not indestructible” at home. He went on to say the Saints could win Monday night’s game, and then come back and beat the Falcons again in the playoffs in the Georgia Dome.

White took to Twitter for his response: “No chance in hell the Aints come into the dome and win once trent dilfer.”

No real harm, right?

Then it got fun. Saints defensive end Will Smith responded on Twitter: “Wondering how @roddywhitetv has the audacity to call us AINT’S.” And for punctuation, he attached a photo of his Super Bowl ring. (That was re-Tweeted by Reggie Bush.)

Still no real harm, right?

Then White sent out the following three Tweets (not cleaning up the typos or grammar here):

“I don’t know why everybody mad for the saints I made a comment on wht trent dilfer said on tv it had nothing to do with them.”

“The grace of god gave them tht championship so tht city wouldn fall apart now and now they think they hot [bleep] …”

“The first time we played them their coach gone say after we won the game thts a good win for yall like the saints are the Colts.”

That second comment was by far the most inflammatory because it invoked the city of New Orleans. It touched off a flurry of comments to White’s Twitter account. Some came from Falcons’ fans supporting him, but most were from angry Saints, many including profanity.

Among the comments: “Lemme see your [rear] go thru what we in Nola went thru after Katrina…then try & talk [crap] about us!”

White was not available for comment Wednesday, which was a players’ day off for the Falcons.

Reggie Roberts, the Falcons’ vice president of football communications, e-mailed a statement, saying only: “We simply think this was a case of one of our guys having fun on his personal Twitter account. The fact of the matter is that Monday night’s game will be played by two of the NFL’s better teams and the outcome will be decided on the field.”

I realize none of this constitutes a burning building. But it is curious how athletes take their smack talk to the electronic world when they’re so careful about what they actually say.

Oh, and there’s this: Is something Trent Dilfer says really worth getting upset about?

Buster Olney ranks the rotations, with the Phillies, Giants, and Athletics taking the top three spots. It seems odd to see the Cardinals in an eighth-place tie, but there are a lot of good ones.

I don’t have ESPN insider; Does anyone know the list or where he put the Braves rotation?

It would be much appreciated if you could post it.

if there is better evidence that trent dilfer cannot (1) complete a single coherent thought (2) avoid stumbling/bumbling thru incoherent thoughts (3) make a point, i haven’t seen it. might be the worst commentator in sports history.

Ok, enough fantasizing! Stats and records don’t speak, Teams speak. All of you be real for once in your life. Do you actually believe the Falcons can really beat the N.O. Saints????? Roddy White needs to shut up and perfect his craft and the refs need to stop allowing him to cheat DB’s out of position with push offs! Roger Goodell needs to enforce penalties and fines on NFL Refs for making ridiculous calls each Sunday for all teams! All I ask for is a fair game Monday Night. And when the Falcons are sitting at home reenacting this season in the first part of January on XBox, remember to watch the Aints in the Super Bowl.

Duffus Dilfer knows crap. He has been soooo freakin’ wrong about the Falcons ALL Year. Did you know that Trent Dilfer is the ONLY Superbowl winning quarterback in NFL history to lose his starting job the very next year! He had to leave Baltimore and signed with Seattle Seahawks as a back-up quarterback! ! What a Ahole he’s turned out to be.

Falcons fans wanted national recognition. Falcon fans wanted ESPN to mention them. Now that Trent Dilfer did it, their all upset!! Too funny!

Cinderella Falcons, when the clock stikes 12 your little glass cleats will break and all the Luck will leave your season: No more 4 & 1’s with favoralbe spots (see Seattle game)….No more trapped “catches” by Gonzalez….No more uncalled Roddy White push-offs…..No more so-called fingertip mystery “catches”……No more so called interceptions….No more game winning drives “led” by Matty Ice via mysterious personal foul calls.

We are the Prime Time Team and we’re going to show you that you guys are wanna be’s. The Saints have already set up to give Roddy “Push Off” White a game ball for the extra motivation after this beat down the Fal Can’ts will get Monday Night.

What an idiot White is!!! No class from the player or the fans. One thing for sure he goes great with this fan base that only show up for games when a team is winning. I remember so many times being in the doldrums you guys call a stadium and it was like a Saints’ home game. At least when we were losing we still supported our team. Your team is weak just like its fan base!!!!

Remember girls we’ve won a Super Bowl and what do you have??? A load mouth receiver that’s all!!!

It seems a little odd to hear AINTS fans referring to the Falcons as a “Cinderella” team. Wasn’t that one of the most common phrases used to describe the AINTS lucky streak last year? Way to turn it around and use it as an insult when it suits. Besides, I think the Dirty Birds destroyed your “Cinderella story” a few months ago. Maybe the second time will hurt less….

(Won’t even comment on the “REAM” thing….)

2. yes, last season was last season, however, no falcons fan can take away the fact that we won the super bowl BEFORE the falcons did!!! AND we did it with more class. even when we were 13-0, our team was focusing on “one game at a time”…the falcons have been talking “super bowl” when they got their little “streak” going…this season will mean nothing unless you win it all. {been there, done that, by the way}

@Payback: The Saints dominated most of their opponents last year. They didn’t win multiple games based on miracle plays or bad calls at the very end (non/bad calls include Roddy White OPI in Ravens game and Grimes INT in Bucs game, to name two). The Redskins game is the one game the Saints shouldn’t have won last year but did because a missed field goal let them back in the game. How many games have you won by a field goal this year? Numerous. Matt Bryant is your MVP. You have dominated maybe three teams this year. This Falcons team is not even close to being what the 2009 Saints were. Don’t even try to compare them.

Who cares if they beat the Aints on Monday? It would be nice, but it’s not a big deal if we don’t. There is no way the Falcons will lose to Carolina.

If you want to look at the big picture how many teams have won the Super Bowl with win streaks of 12+?? (ie the Pats from a couple years ago). If the Falcons beat the Saints and assuming they beat Carolina with the second and third string guys, they would get to the Super Bowl with a 12 game winning streak. So it’s not the end of the world if we lose to the AINTS.

Trent Dilfer is just like some of the bloggers that have been here all year.

Constantly doubting because the Falcons always win the tough games close (because good teams are supposed to lose close games 0.o)

Constantly doubting because when the Falcons dominate a team, it wasn’t enough, or, “it was just the Cardinals/Rams/Panthers/Seahawks”.

Constantly doubting because even though the Falcons have proven to beat the Saints on the road and going 6-2 on the road this season, they have yet to prove they can win on the road. (make sense, yet?)

Morons like Dilfer will continue to throw darts until they finally, out of chance, hit the mark. Even if it means the Falcons go on to win the Super Bowl this year, Dilfer and Co. will say they’re not a good team until they’ve proven they can beat the Empire’s Sith Lords, in a light-years away game, under the elements of zero gravity.

In short, I don’t give a flip about his opinion. Go Falcons. Best team in the NFC.
