If Georgia finishes higher than a 21st in the rankings next season, Aaron Murray will have a lot to do with it.
It seems to be a race every year which media outlet can get its college football preseason rankings out first — kind of like which department store decorates for Christmas first.
Well, a site called NationalChamps.net has established the new standard: It just came out with its 2011 rankings, and we haven’t even made it out of recruiting. Or the bowl season. Or December.
Georgia fans — you’ll neither be thrilled nor surprised. Georgia Tech fans — get ready to rumble.
The No. 1 ranked team on NationalChamps.net’s rankings is Oklahoma, followed by Alabama, LSU and then the two BCS title game opponents, Oregon and Auburn (is Cam Newton coming back or something?).
The Dogs are ranked 21st, which seems about right given the uncertainty on defense and the offensive line and the likely departure of A.J. Green to the NFL.
Then there’s Georgia Tech, which didn’t make the site’s top 25 — or even the top 50.
The only fan base probably more upset is USC’s. The Trojans checked in at No. 43, just behind Air Force, Kentucky and Northwestern. Enjoy, Lane Kiffin.
Preseason rankings mean little even in August. So you can imagine how little weight they carry nine and a half months before kickoff. But they do say something about perception. In this case, the perception is that the Dogs have something to prove and the Jackets’ 6-6 record this season is far closer to reality than the ACC title they won last year.
Do you agree? I’m heading out to Athens Tuesday morning to chat with Mark Richt, so I figured this would be a nice warm-up to a college football column later. What are your early — really early — thoughts on next season?
Below are NationalChamp.net’s rankings, including links to brief analysis.

Dang… is it my eyes, or has GT been left off the top 50 altogether?
Yep… the Dawgs will be in the top 20-25 rankings to start the season. Question is… will they be there after the first game? I think they’ll not only beat Boise St., they’ll climb about 5-7 points in the rankings.

It’s way too early to talk 2011. Like you said, Jeff, we don’t know who is going pro early, what the recruiting looks like, or even what players will do something to make themselves ineligible this year haha.
This poll seems to definitely not be taking into account players leaving early to the NFL. Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, and Stanford in particular could take big hits there. It’s hard to say for UGA at #21. Either they are saying AJ Green and Justin Houston are not returning, or the D wont be any better next year to help make a difference.
As for Tech, I think this speaks more to recruiting than being a blip on the radar. Roddy Jones will be the lone Gailey recruit left that helped Johnson win in those first two seasons. Allen and Nesbitt leave this year, and the talent coming in has not looked nearly as good.

I have no problem with UGA as number 21. I still am trying to figure out how they did a 6-6 this season. After all 10 straight top 10 recruiting classes should be worth a 1- 2 at absolute worse.
GT not in top 50? New QB coming in and a newcomer at B Back? Yeah, not in top 50 is about right.

Iowa is 47? Are they losing key folks? Air Force is 40, so I guess Tech is supposed to lose their bowl. SMU is 36? I wonder how they came up with these.
Honestly, CPJ isn’t pulling in highly-ranked recruiting classes, the defense is middle of the pack and we’re losing Nesbitt, so I can see a lot of preseason rankings not liking Tech. Plus, a lot of people just don’t like option offenses, but these guys do have Navy at 44, which could be right. The 2 main things for Tech next season will be can they hold onto the ball and can the defense improve. The 2 main questions for UGA will be can the defense improve and will Green stay for his senior year.

I’m a Tech guy & there is no way we should be in the top 25. But we probably should be in the top 50, what are they predicting us to go 4-8 or something.
Personally, I don’t think UGA should be just out of the top 25. But, I think UGA will ALWAYS be in the preseason top 25, even if they went 0-12 the year before.

@Rick – they still lost to a UGA team having its worst season in nearly 15 years. So with Gailey’s players, Johnson wins 9 games his first year + beats UGA and wins the ACC his second year with 11 wins. Most of Gailey’s recruits left before 2010, and Johnson goes 6-6, gets pounded by Kansas and the ACC, and then tops it all off losing to a 5-6 UGA team. The current state of Tech’s program has everything to do with Gailey’s recruits leaving, and Johnson not replacing them.

for the sake of argument, let’s look at uga’s schedule in 2011:
LOSS 09/03/11 Boise State
LOSS 09/10/11 South Carolina
WIN 09/17/11 Coastal Carolina
WIN 09/24/11 Ole Miss
LOSS 10/01/11 Mississippi State
TOSS UP 10/08/11 Tennessee
WIN 10/15/11 Vanderbilt
10/22/11 — Open Date — —
LOSS 10/29/11 Florida
WIN 11/05/11 New Mexico State
TOSS UP 11/12/11 Auburn
TOSS UP 11/19/11 Kentucky
TOSS UP 11/26/11 Georgia Tech
NOT HAPPENING 12/03/11 SEC Championship
so, to review, uga starts the season 0-2.
if they win all four of their toss up games, they will go AT BEST 8-4, with losses to Fla, MSU, Boise, and USC. most likely they lose a couple of close games to GT, Tenn, Auburn or Kentucky.
most likely scenario: 8-5 or 7-6 after a possible win in a bowl game.
21st in the country at 8-5? not likely.

Agree with all comments about the difficulty in speculating at this point.
That said, it’s easy to see how UGA would rate a top 20 rating. Murray had a solid year as QB and the only player leaving that will be difficult to replace will be Greene (face it, the kid would be silly to return). The schedule next year is about as favorable as it gets. The SEC East should still be down. UF will be replacing a head coach. UT is still rebuilding.
Regarding my alma mater, even my skeptical nature finds it hard to believe that they don’t rate a top 50 ranking. We lose Nesbitt, but Washington will be about as seasoned a sophomore as can be found, having run the VT, Miami, UGA gauntlet once already. Groh’s defense will have another year to season. We get Maryland, Kansas, Western Carolina, VT, UNC, Clemson and UGA at home next year. Miami is replacing a head coach. VT, UNC, and Clemson are replacing long-term senior QBs. Johnson’s offensive system is not glamorous and with the down year in 2010, I can see why a casual observer would doubt, but any in-depth analysis would give Tech a chance at a decent year.

What’s going on in Athens is a slow death march…..Mark does not have the players or Staff to turn this around IN TIME. He has 3 ugly years in a row under his belt, and he has been caught in a talent gap that will not afford him time to fix it….Next year will be 6-6, 7-5 at best, and most wanted him gone this year. The ‘ He’s a great guy” is not going to save him much longer. He IS a great guy, but this is big boy SEC football, and we have fallen behind. Way behind. 2011 will be painful to watch. Every loss will be like a spike being driven.

It shows how far we have sunk (so quickly!) that I was PLEASED to see us ranked at #21! The ranking loses credibility when you read the breakdown and the top offensive player is listed as A.J. Green and the top defensive player is listed as Justin Houston. Unfortunately, I think we are about to see the last of both of these players.
There is reason for optimism with some of the young players, such as Aaron Murray. So we will just hang in there for another year.

Georgia Tech’s problem is not the triple option offense. We will be just as strong, if not stronger, offensively next year and I think our passing game will be much improved. Combine the #1 rushing offense in the country with even a slightly better passing game? Well, you get the picture.
Tech’s problem, and that has been the case for the last three years, is our defense. I think we will be better defensively, but the key to Tech having a better than winning season will be marked improvement on the defensive side. Folks love to knock the “high school’ offense, but those folks are just plain stupid if they do not recognize that with just the successful offense we have, we might not have lost a game the last three years if we had just stopped the other team more than a time or two defensively.

wesley – at least you tried a thoughtful analysis. South Carolina will be a tough game but it will be in Athens. Miss State and Kentucky will also be in Athens. However, UF is not a slam dunk next year with the coaching change. Auburn will be in Athens without Newton. Figure on Kellen Moore jumping early from Boise and an early game with a new QB is always a gamble. I see UGA going 8-4 at WORST, not at best. (Boise, UF, Auburn and South Carolina being the toughest games)

The top 3 QBs for 2011 are Cam Newton, Kellen Moore and Andrew Luck. I’ll play in as many FBS games in 2011 as Newton and Luck. Then we have Nick Fairly and Da’Quan Bowers as the #s 1 & 2 DLs, Patrick Peterson as the #1 DB – etc.
Interestingly, the only highly ranked JR that is not on the top 10 list for their position is AJ Green.

The Plain Truth

Think about the football team THUGA puts on the field. 90% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with Mark Richt knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university.
It’s kind of pathetic to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited already about next year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 7-5 or even 8-4 occasionally, but another team will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

There were a lot of things for the dawgs to celebrate this year. Let’s see…
1. A drunken, whoring athletic director.
2. Twelve players arrested.
3. A player suspended for violating NCAA rules.
4. Winning the Fulmer Cup for the most players arrested.
5. Winning the title of #1 party school (i.e., the most drunken student body in the USA).
6. A sleazy assistant coach who razzes opposing players, unethical coaching conduct in violation of NCAA rules.
7. A super sleazy head coach who thinks he’s a saint, but recruits thug wannabes, gangbangers, and illiterate morons.
8. A 6-6 record despite having a team full of 4- and 5-star recruits.
Really something to be proud of!

JB – You obviously can foresee the future better than I can – I have no idea how GT will perform over the next several years but I expect them to play hard and to compete on the field. GT definitely stepped back this year but it is not uncommon. There are plenty of successful coaches whose 3rd year at a school was worse than their 2nd. Included in that are Urban Meyer, Mark Richt, Bob Stoops, Jim Tressel, Steve Spurrier (2x). Maybe Johnson will never have a winning record again but I wouldn’t bet on it.

These kind of exercises might actually be useful if the originator would (1) Study the Rosters / depth charts and (2) Look at the schedules. To have GT outside the top 7 of the ACC for 2011 is just evidence that somebody just “mailed it in” and didn’t bother with research.
In 2012, GT will be MUCH better, but the schedule has TOUGH road games. In 2013, for the FIRST TIME under Coach Johnson, GT will FINALLY HAVE BALANCED CLASSES, complete with some experienced upperclassmen, redshirted linemen who will have some time both in the weight room AND the system. AND … a schedule with at least 7 home games (Maybe
and with the EASY games on the road.
It took Visor Boy at South Carolina this long to turn around the culture there. By 2013, in about the same amount of time, CPJ will FINALLY have a “program” in place and working. Last year’s Championship was gravy.
2011? Tech should be somewhere close to the Top 25; fighting again with VPI&SU for the Coastal Division.
Chuck Uga
December 20th, 2010

Jeff,
That is very nice that UGA is 21st. Hard for that not to happen with the schedule in 2011. I am predicting 8-4 and a “fence-sitting” AD in angst over whether to replace Mark Richt. Honestly, I think he will after he realizes that victories over New Mexico St, Coastal Carolina and Vandy are givens while the rest of the schedule yields a record of 5-4. To all of you kool-aid drinkers, I im in Section 128 with season tickets that I’ve had for ten straight years. Mark Richt is finished as far as championship contention is concerned. He does not have the staff to contend. He just hasn’t realized it yet. Sadly, UGA will not play in the Dome again for the SEC Title for at least 5-6 more years, and both Florida and Tennessee will have won SEC Titles (again) by then. UGA is mediocre at best among the SEC teams, well below UF, Bama, LSU and now Auburn (although they will struggle in 2011). Tennessee is catching up quickly and will soon pass UGA. Derek will have winning record against UGA just like Richt has had against UT. It is ashamed to sit back and watch a very backwards (and “backwoods”) administration languish in mediocrity while being oblivious to it. UGA losing Green, Boykin and Houston is going to kill any chance of contending in 2011, and the initial blow-out loss to Boise State will probably wake up McGarity to my points made above. Happy holidays.

After the season the Dawgs have had, I will take #21. However, it is WAY too early for ‘11 rankings considering we haven’t entered into signing day yet. Murray is a great QB who will be more poised and confident next season. I just don’t know how the Dawgs will look on either side of the ball. Unless there is a NFL lockout, I don’t see Green or Houston coming back. If Newton leaves AU, then a #5 ranking is FAR too generous. Look what happened to Florida’s generous preseason ranking after losing Tebow. The Dawgs should not have had a 6-6 season this year, they fielded a better team than that. Here’s hoping that they win more than they lose in ‘11.

I would like to comment on the rankings. Auburn will lose 4-5 games next year and is no way even a top 20 team in 2011. Stanford is decent but the pac 10 is garbage. LSU is the luckiest team in america and they are not a top 5 team. They won’t finish in the top 10 next year. UGAY is about right, maybe #25 but if they lose to boise then it will be another long season in athens. Murray is solid but who does he have worth a crap around him on either side of the ball that is a legit weapon? Boykin may go pro. Durham is gone and who is murray gonna throw too? Everyone knows that their TE is their only real threat and will take him away. Load the box and cover the TE. UGAY will win 6 or 7 i think in 2011. Their defense is every bit as terrible as ours! GT has a much favorable schedule as we have all the tough games at home except miami. We don’t play FSU and we have UGAY at home as well. I like how the schedule sets up for us. We will be young at QB but that won’t stop us from rolling up massive yards and points as long as we HOLD ONTO THE BALL! Our offensive line will be better as should our defensive line. The defense is at rock bottom so it can only go up! Jackets will win more games than UGAY next year. We could see another 45-42 type game if both teams suck on defense again in atlanta. UGAY can not stop our offense no matter if jerry lewis was the QB.

Caleb King has legal woes again, and has failed 3 of his 4 courses this semester – along with posting 430 yards rushing this entire season and 8 yards receiving this entire season for a Grand Total of 2 Touchdowns – which matches his Arrest Record for Mark Richt with 2 as well. Mark Richt made a huge big deal about it when Caleb King barely Qualified for college; instead, he is Mark Richt’s number 11 football player Arrested in 2010 and now brings MORE BAD NEWS for Bulldogs’ Fans with BAD PRESS on-going about Caleb King being declared ineligible to play in the bowl game. He can now try to get his eligibility back by the Fall next season, or Declare for the NFL Draft and be undrafted but given a chance by some team for -0- dollars. Hailed as better than Knowshon Moreno when Mark Richt recruited him and nationally at one point named by several publications as the Top Tailback in the Nation, he had to leave Parkview because of Grades which Caleb lied about at the time, the became the top football player in the state of Georgia 2006 and now 5 years later, a total BUST.
Washaun Ealey also has had academic issues and our Savior Crowell said he is concerned about the history of ruining running backs here at Georgia in our pass-happy offense, which only runs the ball when we are killing the other team with passing.

Just finished reading the comments made by that selfish p.o.s. A.J. Green about his four game suspension. Richt had better figure out the dicipline end of this thing quick. McGarity says that a diciplinary change is now in effect in Athens. Of course we will see how all that plays out. Richt should have suspended Green for another 4 games for knowingly breaking NCAA rules for selfish reasons. His kind are why things are what they are in Athens. Word is C. King is academically inelligible for the bowl game. Can anyone confirm this? Looks like Richt’s star recruits are biting him in the butt again. He had better get a handle on this quickly if he wants another season after 2011. We need Georgia Bulldogs in Athens to play football for THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, not the self serving types we have had in the last four years. We have one in Aaron Murray, but they seem to be far and few between. Richt had also better start thinking more about UGA than being a farm club for the NFL. Now we will hear from the race card crowd, but this is about character, not race.

The polls should start the September season where January ended. If you are #1 (that will be either Auburn or Oregon) you stay #1 until someone beats you. If you have a better team in the new year than the old, you will steadily move up.
Or, have the first rankings in mid-October. But I know none of that will happen because so much media revenue is derived from the articles and talk shows about rankings. ESPN now “owns” college football in my opinion and their commentators have way too much influence on how people vote and on college football in general (see Craig James getting a head coach fired).

If the NFL puts a policy in place that says underclassmen cannot be drafted by it’s teams, then the college players won’t have a leg to stand on. It will become NFL policy, and that will be that. Now that being said, if the universities were to try to implement that same policy, and say that players cannot leave school early to pursue work, that would be a different can of worms. The NFL certainly has the right to make this policy as long as no discrimination laws are broken. The point that I am making is that the players who are on the field for UGA, or any school for that matter should see it as being in their best interest for that school to be successful while on their watch. I saw where Kevin Butler wants son Drew to return in 2011. I don’t know all of his reasons, but I’m sure one is because he cares about UGA, and knows that the team needs him to be there next year. Kevin could have probably left early himself being as good a kicker as he was, but he knew that the NFL was not going anywhere, and he felt like that he was still a Dawg at that time. I stand by what I am saying here, and at some point there has to be some sense of ownership of the team by the players if UGA is going to compete at a high level again. I am encouraged to hear that the current group of targets UGA is recruiting seem to be of high character. I do hope this is true. Two things are absolutely essential for Richt to turn it around, dicipline both on and off the field, and back to basics, hard nosed football practice. McGarity and Adams are both saying that the tolerance for the arrests and general all around thuggery is going way down. We will see. This needs to begin imediately, beginning with C. King if it is indeed true about his academic troubles.

What was Auburn and Oregon ranked pre-season last year?
Rankings don’t matter and all the AJC likes to do is get the UGA fans fired up and mad at the program. If you don’t believe me, read the articles about how great the GT bowl game is in Shreveport and clever the marketing is for selling the tickets to this game. The more preseason rankings that exclude Tech, the better. Tech is a lot better when they are an underdog and the players need to prove themselves. Tech’s OL is still 2 seasons away and the promising young DL need time to mature. When Tech’s more solid in the trenches they’ll be more consistent year in and year out.
UGA at 21 seems about right. Murray’s good and there’s a lot of talent on the team. It does seem like Richt is getting a little like Fulmer at TN…..a very successful coach for many years and then the conference seems to be leaving him behind. With TN & FL down, it’s time for UGA to make hay if they can.

I’m one of the people that isn’t sold of CPJ’s offense. Yes, it has put up solid numbers and I’m not saying it won’t. Our defense has been horrible the past couple years which has been the reason we’ve fallen short. The part I’m worried about is the passing game.
Now before you say “look at what BayBay did”, just realize, that any kid with the measurables and talent of Baybay will not be committing to an offense like this, no matter how much you point to the Baybay example.
I just hope Washington is a better passer than Nesbitt, and that the receivers we do have quit dropping the ball.
I just don’t think we’ll ever seen the game-changing ability that Baybay had ever again. And you gotta be able to strike deep and quick like that in order to win championships, as Auburn showed this year.

Whether UGA is 21 or 31, who cares? Not a top ten team anymore is the point. UGA is Top 30 or so right now even with all the losses in most computers. How does it feel now and how much better will it feel to move up a spot or two? If #21 is what UGA is at end of 2011, CMR is gone IMO.

Wow! UGA back in the polls!
I must have missed Mark Richt’s retirement announcement . . .
Seriously, MSU is 21 in current polls at 8-4. Look on next season’s schedule and find 8 wins, with no changes to Richt’s staff, no AJ, no Durham, no Huston.
Not to mention that we haven’t had a committment in over 4 months.
I won’t miss a play next season, because Aaron Murray will do everything in his power to win, but we’ll probably have to beat Tech again to win 6 games.

It’s obvious that many of the people posting on here haven’t gone to the NationalChampions.net website to see what else is written. How can a CFB website be taken seriously that doesn’t have AJ Green as a top 10 WR?
Before anyone starts saying “he’s not rated because he won’t be back in 2011″, every other highly ranked rising senior is listed (Cam Newton, Andrew Luck, Julio Jones, Mark Ingram, Nick Fairley, Da’Quan Bowers, Marcel Dareus, Justin Houston, Patrick Peterson, etc, etc)

Why schedule Michigan or Ohio State for games ten years down the road? We have already seen what will happen. We will wait until the game is three years away and then cancel the series. We generally play the easiest of SEC schedules until Florida passed us but we are racing them for cupcake scheduling supremacy. We scheduled OSU when they were cupcakes. We played Colorado when they were terrible. We never play anyone of note and just canceled the Oregon series. We are a team with little bark when it comes to scheduling. How do we not win at least 9 games yearly?

The talent on the team definitely has top 20 potential, probably top 10. The incompetent coaching staff, however, with its laissez fair discipline and inability to call plays or train up the players, will drag the 2011 Dawgs down into the SEC cellar even with the easy schedule they have. Until Richt is gone, things will only get worse.

I have seen idiots in my day, but never a larger group of idiots than those of the Auburn University football nation. Auburn’s coming troubles may not even include that cheating, thieving, p.o.s. Newton. Once Mcgregor is convicted of election bribery, Aubies everywhere will be trying to put spin on why players where given perks at his dog track, after their sanctions have been levied. Nothing has changed in the behavioral traits of idiot Auburn people, even since the last major probation period. Oh yeah that was a conspiracy against Auburn, I forgot. Can someone explain to me why you think you have top 10 talent? Is that just you clinging on to Rivals’ recruiting rankings the past few years?
Caleb King was supposed to be the greatest RB recruit in some time coming out of HS. The fact is that recruiting services give UGA the benefit of the doubt and overrank their prospects. Read the Randall Cobb story, about how he was 2-stars until Tennessee offered him and he jumped to 3-stars, if you don’t believe these services to this.

Us being ranked 21 seems, well, absurd. WIthout AG and Durham and a terrible o-line Aaron will be fortunate not to get maimed. So much for the offense. As for the defense, the Tech game is all I needed to see to confirm my worse fears, Two weeks to prepare for the triple option, which is actually the single option with that no-arm QB they were using in Nesbitt’s absence, and we looked pathetic. Our 3/4 of a million dollar DC could not come close to figuring out how to make adjustments during the game. I’m wondering why so many folks think we’ll be better on d next year when we were in our 12th game of the season and still seemed clueless. Surely 12 games is enough to learn a system of defense.
Oh well, things could be worse, we could have a socialist for president. Oh, I temporarily forgot.

If a frog had wings, it could fly. Also, in 2010, if Caleb does not fumble vs Colorado and if Ealey does not fumble in three of the first four SEC games ( all at the 3 yd line ) maybe UGA wins them and had that happened ………………….UGA easily would have been 9-3, instead of 6-6. 2010 is over anyway. Next !!
This is why UGA is ranked # 21 for 2011. “Experts” look at the future team details.UGA’s O line will be about the same and the D ought to be improved. Aaron Murray is AA potential or most certainly All SEC. AJ’s departure will allow other kids to really work harder knowing he is gone and now, they can become impact players. Marlon Brown and the kid from Paulding County ( Chris Conley? ) and Wooten and Tavarres King and the 30 or 40 tight ends that UGA has back, will have to pick it up. Frankly, the UGA tight ends were in 09 and 2010 under utilized.
As for playing a U of Michigan or Ohio State ……………..I recall in 65 when UGA handled them in Ann Arbor with them ranked # 1. I also recall the 93 Citrus Bowl vs Robert Smith and # 6 Ohio State and the Michigan State games with Andre Rison in the 88 Gator Bowl and years ago in the Capital One. All UGA wins, rather handily. Not to mention the UGA pounding of the Purdues and the Wisconsins of the Big Ten, very recently.
This recent UGA vs Big 10 record shows that UGA loves playing them. All UGA wins they were and over many years to validate that fact. Penn. State did handle a very fine UGA team in 82 or 93 palying in the Sugar Bowl for the NC. Game could have gone either way.
Merry Christmas SEC lovers.

Giving a 2011 preseason ranking at this point is about as useful as a cooler in an igloo.
SERIOUSLY?! And it’s not about where UGA or any other team is ranked, there is just too much unknown data on these teams to make an accurate assessment.
1. What juniors are staying or going
2. Several HC/assistant positions are still to be determined
3. Incoming recruits/JUCO player signings
4. Bowl injuries- an unfortunate reality
Take UGA, UF, and AU for example since they’re in our backyard.
UGA- next year’s fortunes haven’t been as tied to a single recruiting class as any in recent memory. SC proved last year what a difference having a homerun RB can do. Could Crowell be that type of back if he comes to UGA?
UF- How about what OC Muschamp brings in? It could be the difference in Brantley staying or leaving and/or what kind of success UF has next season.
AU- here’s the most obvious one – Cam Newton returns then they are easily a top 10 team, he bolts for the NFL they’ll do good to even crack the top 25 by season’s end.
2011 preseason poll in Dec = garbage.

Obviously these rankings are useless. Definately have to wait until next year after signing day to determine where anybody will be. Who knows what could happen. Definately think Auburn won’t be in there, not sure about UF or Bama. Bama was lacking this year, so its no surprise Saban is advising them to stay if they are not top 15 draft picks. UT may be a little better, that team was real young this year. UGA will definately be better, but how much better is yet to be seen. Tech, if Vad Lee is as good as the little bit of hype, they may have a decent team. SC stays about where they are this year, minus the SEC Championship invite.

Leach can go out and find two ( he always has two or three ) great QBs that will throw the ball on first down or 15th down for 45o yds and 42 first downs and that will change the ACC for the better.
In the recruiting area that MD has ……………….Pennsylvania is fertile ground and Leach will find the talent there and over in Ohio plus Virginia and MD and he will within two years have Marland making some noise. He will not employ any D ………………that might be his only negative, however, in his recruiting area he will find some D talent. Afterall, one of GT’;s greatest D players in the 69, 70 era was big Rock Perdoni from Pennsylvania. Leach will find some D talwent over there.
What this move means for GT ………………..CPJ is going to lose more games now, as his teams do not now or ever play pass D. Period. This MD move is very, very bad for GT. Leach can recruit and did so in Texas over UT and A&M and OK and the rest. He is another GT threat for this one reason.
Today’s kids want to play in a wide open attack and CPJ’s simple little BONE O, will only attract running QBs that will have no MFL value. This is CPJ’s Achilles Heel. See sad lil broken up Nesbitt.

a) against winning teams
b) in the 4th quarter
c) on 3rd downs
d) in 1st quarter
e) in the red zone
Murray is why UGA stunk in 2010. wthout him, UGA beats Florida, Colorado, South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss St.

If Newton was coming back Auburn would be number one again, I hear SEC schools that were once offering him money to come are now offering him money to leave. Newton is what Green was suppose to be or the backs at Alabama, game changers. The only players that fit that description besides Newton are Russel of LSU and Latimore at USC. Where does Alabama keep coming up with all this political mustard. How can next year’s team be better than this year’s team, which really is not that good is it?. We saw how good Texas was this year without their quarterback, the same one that was knocked out early in the NC, last year, making it a cakewalk for Alabama and probably a dozen other teams that year. Jones in gone. Why the gravity on A.J. Green, best one handed catch I have ever seen in a loss to Colorado, so highlighted. The idea is to look good or to be good, which means winning… at least making a difference enough to beat Colorado. This after we hear the world would be so different with Green back and poor Georgia had been cheated out of its birthrights by the NCAA. Man catch with dirty money in his pocket,so far, much more than has been proven against Newton. The real sad thing is if I were the Georgia supporter that put up that money, I would be for getting it back, Green was not that good, if winning and losing means anything in Athens anymore. Perception is what Richt is forming in your mind this afternoon. Instead of going to see Tech’s Johnson or even mentioning Spurrier who has a fairly good shot at things next year and certainly a better perception than Richt. Jeff you are heading for another brainwashing. This will lead to more disappointment by the state of Georgia, but obviously Athens makes a better den for the press than it does for it’s football now days. Georgia is the home of local journalism, the key to college football propaganda, so it knows how to feed the flock. The first plank in that is to make it as easy for reporters as possible, which is getting harder and harder as your brothers complain about the brands of beer and food in the hospitality booths. The problem with all this is you have to play the games. Predictable embarrassments occur every year as the press belch in the background from too rich of food. If Newton would decide to come back one more year, breaking this country club of the southern press wide open, now that would some real entertainment. Like I said the SEC is probably subsidizing his pay to get him out of there.

But let’s ignore the facts for a moment (since you’re good at that anyway); let’s say that Tech’s pass defense really was the shortcoming this year. How exactly do you figure that Johnson’s teams will “never” be good at defending the pass?
Is it because you listen to that dunderhead Davey Pollack, who stated that Tech would never be good on defense because they only defend the “triple option?”
I’ll let you in on a little secret: if Davey was a good football mind, he wouldn’t be doing drive-time sports talk.

Techs defense can only get better ramble on, Groh is a good coach. But I do see the point in that its going to be tough to get better at defending the pass if they don’t see it everyday in practice. Same as how your offense is so effective, cause teams you play don’t see the option every day in practice. You guys playing air force should be a pretty decent game, just because both of you practice against that all the time.

Barnes has plenty of size, but I’m not sure he has the toughness or stamina to stay on the field.
I sincerely hope he is a major focus of the coaching staff this offseason. Walls is a hard worker, but he does not have the size to be a nose guard in this defense.
As for Lanier, I have barely seen him because of the injuries. I also hope he is working (and being worked) very hard.
We don’t get many big D-line prospects at Tech, so we need the ones we do get to pan out.
I am also looking forward to seeing Shawn Green and Denzel McCoy…both were highly rated (for Tech at least).

How will daddy Lemay like it if Murray is the starter?
Does Lemay have the character that DJ Shockley had to ride the pine and wait his turn and then become SEC offensive player of the year and lead his team to the SEC title in 2005?
Lemay is already practicing with UGA.

And holy crap UGA fans, quit your b!tch!n about Cam Newton. You guys complain about your QB getting hit and your defense getting lit up while the rest of the SEC’s players are receiving national awards and respect.

Tech’s starting defense does NOT practice against our offense.
They get a scout team offense to simulate the other team, just like every other school in the nation.
Pollack, despite being a heck of a player, was not smart enough to realize this and was very embarrassed when someone called him out on it.
If the 1st team defense only practiced against the 1st team offense, we would be in a lot of trouble obviously.

Secondly, they are in the other division so we only play them a few times a decade, unless of course we meet them in the Championship game.

One other UGA comment …………..red shirt frosh in 2011 receiver Mike Bennett ( Alpharetta ) will be another Kris Durham. Both tall, tough and SURE HANDED leader types. He will fill in very, very nicely at flanker, as Kris Durham ( UGA’s REAL Most Valubale Player ) has graduated. Bennett is Durham’s clone. GT will dread seeing another Durham type and so will many SEC squads, as DURHAM hurt them all. Green? He did nothing for UGA. TG and GH that he is gone.
Really, the only missing piece for UGA in 2011 is AJ Green and he did nothing for UGA in his entire 2.4 yrs.era and so with the 4 or 5 or 6 kids that are now on campus with plenty of experience AND two or three all world incoming wide receiver kids …………………..UGA will be fine. Afterall, AJ’s 2010 stats will not be tough to improve on with him missing half the year. He missed about2 or 3 games in 09 too. Who needs him??
AJ Green will soon be forgotten in UGA lore. Good riddance.

I’m not saying you don’t get good practice against it, but its still the scout teams. Those guys are on the scout team for a reason, so its going to take your coach a little longer to get them prepared for that type of play calling. Its like with Georgia. We can put someone back there to simulate the option, but they are not talented at running the option, they are a different style of player, and so you get the jist of that style, but not the full story.

Lemay is going to be very good. Starting to practice early with the team is going to get him ready early.
Brantley is a non factor IMO. Garcia doesn’t perform well under pressure. Murray and Lemay will be better than both of them and Murray already is.
Lemay’s response to his playing time will absolutely affect team chemistry and could be a distraction. Shockley will always be at the top of my list for DGD because of how he handled himself. He basically ignored his own father and stayed the course and won a SEC title because of his character.

If UGA actually had play makers in 2010 we wouldn’t be 6-6. Murray was the brightest star on the team, that includes Green. Murray was expected to make a lot of mistakes but voila’, the mistakes came from the veteran upperclassmen and the experience. I’ll tell you wesley, our hatred for each other aside, UGA could field all 1st year starters next year and still out perform this bunch we fielded this year.
Unluckily for the opponents that won’t be the case. IMO, our defense was as bad as Slick Willies, if there’s improvement there (a big IF) UGA will have at least a 9 win season next year. Georgia still has some offense to deal with. A team simply cannot give up 30-40 points a game and expect to win many

gomdawg, not gonna argue with you on Murray. If he stays healthy, he will go down as one of the best ever at UGA.
But AJ was the main reason we scored a lot of points in that 5 of our last 7 run. Whether or not he was catching passes, he was drawing double coverage. A safety had to account for AJ, which gave our other WRs single coverage, and even helped our (mostly pitiful) running game.
Hopefully somebody (Brown, King, Wooten?) steps up in ‘11 and becomes a big-time playmaker at receiver, to compliment Orsen Charles, who is gonna be a great one.

where did I say Lemay was a savior?
I predict he will be a good QB in college.
I was incorrect in saying he was practicing. He attended practice.
WDE and Dawgh8ter need to get a room, together.
Lemay makes Murray and the depth at QB better because Murray has real competition for the job.

Back to the subject of Jeff’s post, I hate predictions like this. Who in their right mind would think up stuff like this. If you read the story, it has Green and Houston on the Dawgs’ roster … how do they know that? And what about bowl game, spring or pre-seasoned injuries? They can completely alter the way a team plays.
And how about a freshman making an impact on special teams, at running back etc … sometimes they can turn an entire program around.
Conjectures like this are written by the insane for the insane.

Ok so without knowing the outcome of the bowls, seeing which players stay or leave, or finishing the whole recruiting process these rankings came out. Ok fine. But can anyone explain to me how to evaluate a program that doesn’t even have a head coach. Look at #32 and #38. Not to mention the potential #24 and #9 coaching changes (key word: potential). These rankings are crap and anyone who is saying “oh that seems about right” or “this team should be higher” is full of crap.

As a dawg I sure hope that LeMay does NOT replace Murrya. In Murray he is a great QB with a great attitude. I have and always have had a bad feeling about Lemay!. I think he will be trouble.
Heck, I’m still in the nightmare of the 2010 season. We stunk it up pretty good. I think at GT with Washington, once he feels more comfortable passing the ball, you guys can be pretty dangerous offensively. However, both our teams fan base cringe at the thought of our defenses. I won’t make any predictions about UGA until after the SC game next year. Those two game will test the defense alright.

UGA needs to try and beat a team with a winning record, instead of bigger goals. Murray led Dogs in 2010, worst in Richt’s coaching career, couldn’t beat a single winning team. Thank goodness the Murray era is finally over.

It really makes me sad to see how many Dawg fans get such a kick out of turning their back on us to bash tech. Anyone who thinks for an instance that we are a top 21 team, doesn’t know jack about football, just like the ones making this poll. Except for our qb, we are terrible. We have been terrible, and we will continue to be terrible! I have preached the last two years about the source of the problem, only to be chastized by these same morons.
Number 1 rushing O in USA ,..... so what about #1 in wins???
December 22nd, 2010
9:25 am
When I read about a college team and their stats like mega passing yards or rushing yards, two things immediately come to mind.
1.) What conference are they in? This is telling.
2.) How many wins vs big boy schools did they have?
GT in the ACC and then vs Iowa and LSU and UGA ( w/ 890 total yds in Sanford Stadium) STILL LOST these out of conference games. That rushing prowess is wonderful for GT, I suppose but what about wins? I would rather have 189 total yds and win 21-20 than have 450 yds per game and lose.
Remeber the old U of California teams with Bartkowski and later Joe Roth and others like Craig Morton 100 years ago? They could hum the pigskin up and down the field and in fact vs UGA in the mid 70s did gain a bunch of yds but UGA won. A rushing attack that churns up tons and tons of yds but loses is worthless. I mean look at GT’s bowl this year. Number i rushing team and ONLY the Weedeater extended GT a bid. See? Number one is wins is very good but not in passing or rushing at 6-5 or 6-6.
Next year is CPJ’s 4th and about every 4 years at GT and counting the Dodd era, GT has a new coach about ev ery 4 years and next year may validate this for CPJ.
1967- 2010??? Dodd, Fulmer, Carson, Rogers, Curry, Lewis, Ross, Gailey and CPJ and two or three more that I can not recall. CPJ is in trouble. Yes, just like CMR.

UGA also faced Brigham Young in Athens in Ray Goff’s era and Brigham Young had his g.g.g. grandson Steve Young running the show. You all recall Young? he um, ah, played in the NFL for years and was a great one.
Well, with all of his rushing yds and all of his passing yards ………………..UGA WON that game. Oh, it was in Goof’s era too.UGA was no good then either but we took care of BY.
Stats are for losers. See GT and their number 1 rushing start in the Independence Bowl, as that was the oNLY bid they got with that stat.

I mean stopping the thuggery at GT ought to be priority # 1. The school through the Tech Fund can afford to hire 25-30 security guys that are in plain clothes and can view what is happening in and around the campus, 24/7. Off campus is s different story, I know. Vigilantes are not what i am saying here.

Hey Ramble On,
Take a look at the GT criminal charges in the last two or three years and those of the UGA players. I will start with Dog DE Robinson now gone from Athens for shoving his gal toy around and your DE Hall? Is he not STILL on campus?? Did he not play in 2010??? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm???
Our kids stole a helmet, pinched a girl in bar in Valdosta ( highly regarded QB GONE) Ealey TWICE drove a car and bumped into a parked car in parking lot ( dumb I will admit ) and Caleb King driving w.o. a license or a suspended license and T King for a DUI. Not good but …………….but ………………… but look at these charges for the GT men. Rape, assault and drugs.
Keep it on the apples to apples comp.
Merry Christmas !!

Hall was suspended indefinitely until the charges were dropped.
Sorry Paul Johnson abstained from conducting his own criminal trial process.
Tarrant was falsely accused of rape and he lost a year for it. When it all came down to it, the judge saw the case as fraudulent.
Reuben Houston was over five years ago.
Joe Hamilton was caught drinking and driving with some weed in his car.
But keep grasping for straws.

Don’t worry, holelickers, CPJ is going to be here a long long time. He will not settle for mediocrity, the way that ya’ll have. He will not change his standards to satisfy a few, like your coach has. He won’t allow his players to underachieve, like your team has. We have won 27 games the last three years, how about you?
I stand corrected about it all, except one ....
December 22nd, 2010
1:57 pm
I see, All charges dropped. I got it. Now I understand and will admit I was wrong, except on this one factoid:
CPJ is 1-2 vs Richt and UGA in this particular era is the worst in years and years. With two losses to one bad football team in three tries …………………how does that make CPJ look??? Hmmm??
GT is 1-9 over the last 10 years and that is all.
Merry Christmas!
PS we also OWN your basketball team lately and we still own Florida over the entire UGA/Florida series.

One more comparison ………….we all know that Caleb King “is evil because he drove w.o. a Ga license”. Correct? is that not what all of you bad mouthing, I hate UGA folks were saying?? Hmm?
Well, then why is Joey Hamilton’s DUI and WEED possesion no big deal. They are far worse than driving w.o. a license. % year back? Still it doe snot matter as he is one of your greatesd players.
Get real GT urban types ……………your guys can be thugs too ……………ask Reuben Houston.
Dolly Madison would argue with y'all in the ACC
December 22nd, 2010
2:07 pm
Mediocrity is the nick name for the ACC when just about any tv sportscasters out side of Charlotte or Raleigh or Winston Salem or Blacksburg or College Park, MD speak of the league. ESPN ranks it way down the list even below the Mid America Conference or that funky Big East thing.
Besides ………………………….Dolly or was it James Madison STOMPED one of your best teams and frankly, I had not a clue whetehr they even had a football team, beyond flag ball.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA
When do GT and UGA play some basketball. We all know that “GT in the ACC IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL” ………………………..right?????
Please remain at GT a lonnnnnng time, CPJ
December 22nd, 2010
2:15 pm
CPJ is known as a genius, just ask Richt, another genius, right???
CPJ thought to lose by 8 is wonderful. His brilliant pressure cooker strategy was to “allow UGA to score and go up by 8 and that was apparently thought by him to be more heroic and manly. What ever happened to the let us stop them, cause a fumble and kick a winning FG strategy or something.
Oh, I um, ah, forgot ………………..y’all had that Blair Witch kicker. FG was simply impossible.
GT throwing that pigskin two years in a row only to lose is so funny to UGA fans. # 1 rushing team in the universe and you cannot win the darned game over the worst UGA D in maybe 50 years, except for 08 and 09.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA
Maryland is back
December 22nd, 2010
2:32 pm
Dick Shiner of the Urange Bowl Maryland Terrapin football team would be so proud. He also played QB for the Falcons in the early years. So will Boomer Esiason.
Maryland will be one hot team and the ESPN crowd will give them a lot of focus, as they want to see what Leach has left. He will churn out a passing team within two years and GT may get 400 yds rushing but MD will see 550 yds days passing it. They will score on GTat will, if they play and they will beat most ACC teams within two or three years.
ACC just got better with his hire and Maryland being good will make GT’s chances of a minor bowl much, much higher. Bowls want to see passing teams and Maryland will be that under Leach and GT will be rendered just so 70s in style.
GT does badly next year again for the third time in 4 years …………………CPJ will be toast. He is already in trouble with his mounting losses to UGA in their worst era ever.
Notice that not one school contacted any one on CPJ’s staff and AL Groh for example, has all of that NFL experience that CPJ bragged about last year. How did all of the work out for you, Jackets???

But Tech won the ACC last year. If Nesbitt doesn’t get hurt at Va Tech, Tech may have won that game. Chan played Reggie Ball. Played him when Ball kept getting worse after good frosh year. Hey “I know nutthing” Schultz-Shouldn’t you be calling for Psul Johnson’s head and how his offense is rendered, like yourself, impotent. Tech lost five of its last six games and…Tech has dropped its past six bowl games, including the last three under Johnson. In those losses, Tech’s option offense has averaged 8 points and 263 yards.Time for him to go…he obviously can’t coach with the big boys..lost to Air Force…Air Force…..wow….
