It doesn't make sense for Kirby Smart to make lateral move from Alabama to Florida.
If we are to believe reports, Kirby Smart is considering leaving as the highly paid defensive coordinator at Alabama to become the highly paid defensive coordinator at Florida, thereby forming “Team Bulldog” in Gainesville with Will Muschamp.
I’ll ask the same question now that I did a year ago at this time when Bulldogs coach Mark Richt tried to lure Smart back to Athens: Why would Smart do it?
Smart is a terrific coach. I know some believe he gets too much credit for Alabama’s defense because he works for Nick Saban. But if he wasn’t highly regarded, he wouldn’t be on Saban’s staff and Alabama wouldn’t have bumped up his contract to $750,000 a year to keep him when Richt phoned.
But Smart’s next move should be as a head coach. He’ll get offers, as soon as next season. We all know there will be some tenuous heading coaching situations going into next season.
If Saban, who has a reputation for burning out assistants, is driving Smart nuts, that’s a factor. If Florida offers to elevate his pay even more, that also would be a factor (although it’s hard to imagine the Gators paying Smart much more than he’s making now). Finally, there’s the opportunity for Smart to work with a close friend in Muschamp.
But if Smart leaves, he will be taking an enormous risk. We know Alabama is going to be a very good team again next season. We don’t know that about Florida. The outgoing Urban Meyer said the Gators are “broken” right now. There’s a transition period for any new head coach.
Mostly, we still have no idea how good Muschamp will be as a head coach. The fact he was the coach in waiting at Texas and deserved this opportunity doesn’t guarantee he will be a success. It’s a different job with different responsibilities when you’re the guy in charge.
If Muschamp struggles, his coaching staff slides down with him. Smart already is a hot commodity. He’s not going to become a hotter commodity in Gainesville.

Hiring Will Muschump doesn’t punch an automatic ticket to the SEC East title. Florida’s got serious problems and hiring an assistant from Texas is going to fix those problems overnight.

The obvious critical hire for Muschamp is an offensive coordinator. One would think Muschamp could handle the defensive side IF needed.

Kirby and Will are good friends, so that has to play into it at least somewhat.
That said, it’ll be interesting to see what Smart chooses to do. It is a lateral move, and one does have to think that he’s at least got some head coaching feelers himself out there to sort through once things settle. I was a little surprised Miami went after Temple’s head coach with Kirby out there…

This may sound ridiculous, but let’s think about it.
1. Meyer retires
2. CMR has sub par 2011.
3. CMR gets fired.
4. Greg McGarity (who worked in Gainesville) turns to a guy who has been hanging out in Ga for the last year, who knows how to win, and who can recruit…
5. Urban Meyer is hired by Georgia.
Before you say it’s ridiculous, just think about it . I admit it’s make my stomach turn but stranger things have happened.

If Smart or any credible assistant, heads to work with Muschamp, they are not too smart. For all the reasons you listed, and more.
How about his 5-7 record? How about the 3 pitiful unranked teams his defense lost to? How about the only teams he could beat were teams like Rice & Wyoming?

Smart and Muschamp just confirm that the Athens program is so broken that former players who are in high-profile assistant coaching positions will not return to Athens. Why? Because these guys know if they return to Athens it will be business as usual and it would only taint their resume.
We know for a fact that Muschamp and Smart rejected any offers to come back to Athens as DC, and this sort of rejection totally embarrassed the UGA community.
Athens needs to just keep loving CMR and we can just keep on blogging year after year when Athens is 6-6, 7-5 or maybe even 8-4. The problem is Athens did not have the kohonas to fire CMR, because they know that no top-rated coach can be lured to this program.
Florida is the top job in the country, and Athens is the bottom of the barrel.

WDE, the reason that Auburn is in the title game is due to solid coaching and well rounded athletes who are disciplined, hard hitting and with overall better speed.
Auburn fans are also very critical of their program when it does not perform (i.e. Tubberville being fired), so basically Auburn is moving towards being a consistent championship program, while Athens is content with an SEC title every now and then, with more emphasis on “then.”

UGA should have 3 titles under their name, including 1980, 1981 and 1982, however, you were:
1. Beat by Marino and Pitt in 1981
2. Beat by Blackledge and PSU in 1982
Both of these losses were due to Dooley’s ability to win the big ones. He got fat ass lucky with the coin toss landing Herschel Walker, and if he had lost the toss, there would be not statue and no Vince Dooley.

The fact is that ‘bama was a HUGE disappointment this year. 3 regular season losses for the runaway favorite and defending champs was nothing short of a disaster. The defense was pitiful in the big moment. Smart’s star isn’t shining as bright after this last campaign. I understand the need for AJC columnists to pressure Smart into staying at ‘bama as the thought of ‘Champ and Smart leading Florida to an SEC/BCS title would be a death blow for a struggling UGA program. But, if Smart goes to Florida and coaches up a top 5 D he will be in line for a top flight job in 2012 or ‘13.

The hiring is not that smart becuase of the poor recrd Texas had this year? Is that right? And the poor recod this year makes his coaching bona fides questionable?

WDE, I wouldn’t be laughing too hard at UGA. Auburn fans should be more than a little concerned about some of the stuff I’ve read concerning Bobby Lowder, Milton McGregor and the FBI. Even if Auburn does get to keep that crystal football, they’re losing a ton of players this year.
As for UGA, well it isn’t the vogue thing to have confidence in Richt and Bobo on these boards. But am pretty confident Richt’s best season is still ahead of him. Also, UGA won’t be worrying about whether or not their crystal football is just on loan. My advice is to leave the price tag on yours…less hassles that way.

Would not be a good hire for UF. We need someone that will be around for a number of years and he’s most likely going to be a HC somewhere in the very near future. He would be better served to stay at Bama until that time and UF would be better off looking elsewhere for a DC.

I would love to see Muschamp and Smart work together. i like the intensity and toughness they bring to the table. Muschamp’s D was put in terrible field position battles all year long by the turnovers and lack of offense. Smart, on the other hand, i dont know how much hand he has on Bama’s D because of Saban. I’d like to see what he could do running his own show with his buddy Muschamp. I do know that recruiting in GA just got that much tougher for the DAwgs. AU and Fla will continue to raid GA with a lot more force

Jeff,
Give me a break! Florida is not going to let their program die. Therefore, the hire was a great hire! The guy has energy and he is young. Why would anyone not want the HC job at Florida since they always recruit well and attract the best or top athletes across the nation? The alum is too big and strong to let the program fail. The Gators will be back in the hunt once again for a NC within 2 years!!! Unlike that sorry program in Athens which has not done a thing in 30+ years now!

And why do we know Alabama is going to be a very good team next year? They stand to lose as much as McElroy, Julio Jones, and Ingram. That isnt including other Seniors and underclassmen that might leave.
They definitely took a step back this year, so why after losing even more to the NFL, would they be better next year? Like Meyer, Saban is known for winning early and then leaving. He has never stuck around long enough to rebuild success at the same program.
Smart should probably wait out for a HC job, but I wouldn’t say stay at Alabama because they are getting better.

Everyone keeps pointing to UT’s 5-7 record as a reason to why Muschamp won’t be successful at Florida. But it wasn’t the defense that led to their struggles. In fact their defense was one of the best in the nation coming in at #7 overall. I think it is just jealous puppy fans knowing that while they are stuck for another mediocre year with a mediocre coach all of the good candidates are being snatched up.

This might tell you something’s not that good in Alabama. This year’s team was suppose to be great with the return of so many that had won a national championship including a Heisman winner,a quarterback that had never lost a game, and the best wide reciver in the SEC if not football, not so. Do we really expect next year’s team to improve from this year. Now people are working on Smart after he gave up a 24 point lead in Tuscaloosa, to Auburn. Florida will give a coach a period of grace, Alabama may have started that clock already, with Smart, and he very well may be the scape goat for Saban. Bobby Bowden lived off scape groats for a decade before they could chase the real problem away. Three loses, and I’m not so sure that team last year was a winner against Texas if the quarterback had not been hurt in the first quarter. Texas without those guys this year was worse than Alabama.

Smart will bring everything he has learned from Saban about defense….which is a lot….to Gainesville. Applewhite or some other excellent OC will also get the outstanding offensive talent in Gainesville working…and it was not working under Addazio…who was not much more than a high school coach.

The Muschamp hire is a solid one for UF. He has cut his chops under Saban, and coached a top 5 team at Texas. He is walking into a fertile recruiting ground. Last year Florida had what many listed as the top recruiting class in the past 20 years.Florida’s problem was not just losing Tebow, but also Strong and Mullen at the same time. If Muschamp hires even above average coordinators, they will do well. This past year was an abberation for several teams, including Texas, Florida and UGA. I hope that UGA can capitalize on the stability of a coach who is level headed and has been there for ten years. This is a critical recruiting year for them. If they get Crowell, Drew, Rome and Swann, they will be tough going forward. If they don’t, then it may be time for a coaching change.

Two thoughts:
1. Smart and Muschamp are friends. I can’t think of a single friend I’d want to work for. It’s hard enough on the friendship when you’re partners.
2. Florida has been as good as any program in the nation since the 90s, but this is Alabama we’re talking about. Notre Dame, USC, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma and possibly Nebraska are the only real peers Alabama has in college football from a tradition and prestige standpoint. Taking the same job at any other school isn’t a lateral move.
Unless he hates Tuscaloosa or can’t stand the thought of working another day for Nick Saban, Smart should stay at ‘Bama. Besides, Saban isn’t known for staying in one place for too long. A little patience and Smart could find himself as the head coach of Alabama or his alma mater.

Everyone is talking about how long it will take to rebuild the Florida program — Balderdash ! — UF has had a top 5 recruiting class 3 of the last 4 years ( were number 11 one year ) including the no. 1 class last year. They are loaded / just need either an offense that fits their QB or a QB that fits their offense. It is a helluva lot easier for Muschamp to follow a 7 – 5 season than it would have been to follow a 13 – 1 season. Top 10 next year — top 5 the year after. All upside

As far as this “terrible” season, let me see we:
Lost by one point to the eventual National Champion (Auburn)
Lost by three points to the Number 11 team (LSU)
The worst slip up was to SC by 14 points, but they ended up in the SEC Championship game..
And we beat the #8 and #21 teams (Arkansas and MSU)
Did Florida do that well this season?

Why would Muschamp hire a guy he knows will be looking to leave for a head coaching job after one, two seasons tops?
And if Smart accepts the UF d-coordinator position only one season after turning down the same opportunity at his alma mater, that tells you something is seriously wrong in Athens. No one, not even a loyal alum, wants to jump onto a sinking ship. That’s definitely the perception of the program under Mark Richt right now.

It looks like Smart is going to UF, as well. Leaving Alabama for the same job. Didn’t see that coming.
This is brilliant if UF pulls it off, but if could potentially blow up in their face, too. You’d have to think that Muschamp and Smart would both bring some big egos to the job, and that Smart would have his eye on every high-profile head coaching position that opens up beginning in oh, 12 months from now. If that happens, UF would have three different def. coordinators in as many years. That’s not an ideal situation.

Good column and your remarks are spot on. My email pals and I were having this same discussion and I stated my concerns there. Low and behold your piece appears a little later.
Bottom line is this, if Smart were to take a DC job with Muschamp in Florida he would be telling the college football world he isn’t ready to be a head coach, not now and likely not ever. It would make no sense to go to Florida (a latteral move), leaving a BCS championship program to start from scratch at FL. A career killer in my opinion

“Florida is easily a better job than alabamer.”
You must be really young if you think that. Alabama is college football royalty with success that dates before the Depression. Florida has been mostly outstanding since Spurrier arrived in ‘90, but did squat before that. Not even an SEC Championship until 1991. Alabama had something like 20 by that time.
This is something less than a lateral move. From Smart’s perspective, this doesn’t make sense unless he’s had all of Nick Saban that he can handle.

The only reason I see for Smart to come to Florida is 1) they are good friends and 2) Smart owes Muschamp for getting him into big time football from Valdosta State. If he doesn’t come, it won’t be the end of the world.
They first coached together in 2000, when Muschamp was defensive coordinator at Valdosta State and Smart was defensive backfield coach. Smart was promoted to defensive coordinator at Valdosta State a year later, when Muschamp left to join Saban’s staff as linebackers coach at LSU. Muschamp was promoted to defensive coordinator at LSU in 2002, and convinced Saban to hire Smart as linebackers coach two years later.

If we have the ability to fix it faster, then doesn’t that mean the situation is not as bad? We’ve made the dreaded coaching change that all programs fear and are heading in a new direction. We all wish Urban the best but it was plan to see he wasn’t the same coach this past season. His heart was not in it and he is to be lauded for making that call before eventually forcing Foley’s hand. The same cannot be said at UGA. Richt continues to head down the same path deeper into the woods. Is there light on the other side? Who knows?

Since dawgtards seem to love living in the past, how about remembering the Jan Kemp trial, which exposed UGA and Vince Dooley for the jokes that they were. My favorite quote from the trial was this one:
O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for the defense, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”
The best thing about the trial was that it completely killed Vince Dooley’s shot at Congress, since he was exposed as a fraud and a cheat during the trial. Make no mistake – Dooley knew everything that was going on.
Nothing has changed in the almost three decades since the trial. If anything, the abuses are even worse. Exhibit #1: Jim Harrick and son.
Today the players are even more illiterate and felonious and, well, just plain stupid, as evidenced by their arrest records and record number of penalties. Even Vince Dooley couldn’t have controlled this mob, much less Mark Richt. And now even the (recently departed) AD is a drunk debaucherer.
Think about the football team THUGA puts on the field. 96% of the players are academically provisionally accepted, with Adams and his cronies knowing full well that they will use up all their coaching and tutors and elligibility and then have their asses kicked out on the street and soon be pushing grocery carts around Atlanta looking for a warm place to sleep. What a pitiful way to run the State’s flagship university.
There’s a reason why UGA is known as The Cesspool of the South.

There is no question that Saban is not a nice man to work for, and he will likely be heading for greener (as in money) pastures in the near future, particularly after the beat down by Auburn. Florida has plenty of talent and money. I think that Smart will join his pal at UF.

Mike Bobo 17 int- You are a dumb A*S! Muschamp and Smart may have turned UGA down when they called last year in regard to the DC job. Muschamp didn’t go to Florida to accept the DC job, he accepted the HC job. If you can’t see the difference in the two opportunities, my earlier description of you isn’t harsh enough. Who cares if Smart joins Muschamp? I know i don’t, UGA’s and Bama’s defenses were very similar in numbers last year. So before everyone thinks that Smart can out coach TG, please look at the facts. Smart should have had another great defense this year and didn’t. It was TG first season, give him a couple more before we say he sucks. I think Richt has a decent record against the Great Nick Saben, i think it is 3-2. Auburn went from 5-7 to 13-0, i don’t see any reason we can’t make a similar move next year.

[...] By Jeff Schultz, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution If we are to believe reports, Kirby Smart is considering leaving as the highly paid defensive coordinator at Alabama to become the highly paid defensive coordinator at Florida, thereby forming “Team Bulldog” in Gainesville with Will Muschamp. [More] [...]

I think Kirby is angling for a raise. It would be far better for him professionally to stick with Saban. Of course, Muschamp could pull UF out of the turmoil, and that would look good on a resume, as well. I have my doubts about that. To say the least, his dream job is going to involve rolling up his sleeves and making some tough decisions if he does it right. If Muschamp does it right, UF may have a couple of bad seasons. If he does it wrong, UF will be good, not great, until the UF fans call for his head. On the other hand, if he comes in too head strong he could lose the reigns all together. It is no cake walk. I will always wish a young coach the best, especially a former UGA guy, even if it is at UF.
I don’t know where everyone gets this “UF is always going to have great recruiting classes” thing like there is some magic to it. People have said the same of USC and Michigan and Notre Dame and yes, friends, the Dawgs. Teams cycle. Now, UF is competing with the viable programs of the SEC, of which the West bunch is hot right now. In addition, they are competing with a rejuvenated FSU program, a Miami bunch that is dejected and ready to spend in a big way, and two teams in USF and UCF that get stronger every year. I would go play for Chip or Jimbo before I would venture into the unknown with Muschamp.
The coaching carousel in NCAA
December 14th, 2010
10:24 am
Most of the coaches that were gonna get canned have been. Michigan’s HC Rodriquez, according to my Michigan pals, is still in play and the bowl will likely be the deciding factor.
As for UGA, we are going to have a new coach by this time next year. Utah’s coach and or maybe Boise State’s coach or a Dan Mullen, possibly Kirby Smart will be the top four choices. Three of these were rumored to be going to Florida until the Mushcamp hire. Now, UGA can still be in the hunt in 2011 for their services. The alumni will frown on an unproven guy like Smart ……. he being an alumnus or not.
Right now, AD McGarity is in a holding pattern of sorts. He does not want to be forced into change but if Richt cannot deliver at least a 10-2 year with say a shot at the SEC East and then maybe a Cap One Bowl bid for 2011 ……………….. he will have to go ahead and pull the plug on Richt and that entire staff.
For UGA to wind up in the Outback at 9-3 might ………….might do it IF things took place during the year, like wins over Florida and SC and a stomping of G, like we usually do. Another losss to MSU and also to UT and maybe a KY would be a disaster for Mark Richt ………….so he needs to go 10-2 and win the East.
SO UGA faithful …………..enjoy your CHRISTMAS and eat some vittles and watch some fine bowl games and then, we get excited anew with recruiting, etc.
Let us be happy that we have AU and Scam Newton to laugh about. THAT story is going to get much larger AFTER the NC game. Then, the impact will be devastating to the entire AU family. THE FBI is quietly gathering facts on CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR. Can you say PETE ROSE???
A word of caution …………………. if Richt has a real disapppointing recruiting class, they will begin framing his gallows. THIS specific area is being watched closely by AD-McGarity ………… believe you me.

Head coaches and coordinators are usually two different breeds. There are many exceptions to this rule, but CMR is a good example. Richt was a great OC, but has shown that his leadership skills are lacking, at least on the football field. Great guy though.
Muschamp has fire. So did Ray Goff. Smart is, well smart. So was Donnan. A HC is a special blend of leadership, charisma, smarts, and a good deal of luck. It doesn’t hurt to have a significant system of paying players like *Auburn either.
At UF, Muschamp will get talent. If he lands a really good OC, and keeps him a couple of years, he’ll be fine. Otherwise he’ll be a Zook. The biggest part of being a HC, a CEO, President of the US, etc., is being smart enough to make good hires. That’s not one of CMR’s strong suites, and will probably be his downfall if he doesn’t improve at it. Without Erk Russell, Vince Dooley would have been a fairly mediocre HC, IMHO. If Ray Goff had had an Erk Russell, he’d still be at UGA and we’d be singing his praises.

While it is probably not the best move for Smart, it is great move for Muschamp getting a right hand man who he can trust to have his back.
Cobb Dawg I agree with some of what you said: clearly a good D coordinator is like a second HC. ERk and Vince, Bowden and Andrews, Meyer and Strong, … for a while I would put Richt and Van Gorder in that category. Maybe Grantham will become that guy.
Maybe most HCs (at least those above) are more offense-minded. It seems, though, that the D-coordinator has a different kind of relationship to an HC than other assistants. I don’t quite agree with you about Goff. Although, he did get some rough breaks with injuries and guys going pro early, and probably is probably more maligned than he deserves.

PS: I am not sure that being an alum is necessarily a good criterion for hiring an HC. Certainly, Alabama had that mentality and fumbled coaches around trying to find the right Bear prodigy before getting Stallings. After which, they fumbled around with Shula and that whole ensuing carousel.
Hire someone because they are a good coach. (For the record, though, despite some disappointments and self-righteous rants, I still think Richt is a great coachwho will prevail at UGA.)
Anyone have any stats on success rates of alumni coaches?
There definitely seems to be a regional bias.
(Vince went to Auburn. Richt went to Miami. Dye went to UGA. Bowden played for Bear I think. Fulmer played at UT for Doug Dickey who played and coached at UF. Chizik played at UF for Pell who played at Bama. Johnny Majors played an Coached for UT.) For the record, Saban played at Kent State and Miles played at Michigan under Bo.

Chazzo, perhaps my point about Goff wasn’t clear. He his offenses usually scored enough points to win. But his defenses gave up WAY too many points. If he had had an Erk Russell to recruit and lead his defenses, he would have fared about like Dooley, IMO. Just look at some of the offensive players that he recruited like Andre Hastings, Garrison Hearst, Eric Zeier, Hines Ward, etc. BTW, Kirby Smart, coincidentally was a Goff recruit as well.

It will come out just like it did for the REAL USC and Reggie Bush.
By the way, NBC did a nice tv piece on SMU last week. SMU got the death penalty in football in the mid 80s and the stink there went all the way to the desk of the TX Governor, himself.
Why Richt will not win big
December 15th, 2010
10:05 am
Richt will not win big because he does not allow the coaches to chew on the kids and he does not allow any cussing. That sounds silly and simple but that is it. He prefers a tranquil persona on the field and most great coaches are fiery and passionate. He SQUELCHES them on the side lines and this is why he could not land a locally known D coach last year and it is why his best coaches left him.
Go Dogs. We will have a new regime by 2012 and will be fine. We have to endure yet one more ugly year and then, we get better. It is the way that it is.

Will Muchamp recruited the FERTILE HS fields of the great state of Texas. Texas OWNS that state. They also can get tons and tons and tons of recruiting traction with kids in Oklahoma, Lousiana, and Arkansas and anywhere they need to. Their program is set or was. WHY did Muschamp FAIL in recruiting that state as THE HEAD COACH IN WAITING AND the D Coordinator??This is very crucial to gauging his success as the Head Coach at Florida.

If you look at salary averages, you have to consider that there are a select few big bucks professors, either because of longevity, highly technical field, stellar achievements or some combination (probably in the 100,000 dollar range), at major universities like UGA and Tech. The average Assistant prof. in the state of Georgia probably pulls in the low to mid 40s to start, much less at smaller institutions. The younger players at a university are probably taught by adjuncts making $2,000 a class or grad assistants, who like the players are working for tuition, books, and a stipend.

You know, F*** Muschamp and Smart. I would have been fine with Muschamp taking the UF job since that’s a massive opportunity for anyone wishing to be a head coach, but he didn’t have to stand there and lie about “dreaming” to be the head coach of the Gay-tors. Had there been even an ounce of truth to that dog and pony show press conference, then he would have attempted to walk-on to the UF program instead of UGA. Ray Goff is responsible for giving that d-bag a chance. He owes everything to him. Had he not been allowed on to the UGA team he would not have had the cakewalk opportunity to get into the coaching world, period. And Smart I just don’t care for.
