Jackets fizzle again, but Radakovich in Hewitt’s corner

Georgia's Gerald Robinson drives past Tech's Daniel Miller for a layup in the second half, and the Bulldogs rallied for a 73-72 win. (AP photo)

For most of the evening, it looked like early December basketball: Missed jumpers, mistimed passes and long stretches of mediocrity interrupted by the occasional highlight.

Actually, if you flipped back the calendar a couple of weeks, it was the Georgia vs. Georgia Tech football game.

In the end, the Bulldogs won this one, too, 73-72 at Alexander Memorial Coliseum. The difference: a 3-pointer by the Dogs’ Dustin Ware that broke a tie with 18 seconds remaining, followed by a Tech team that looked again as if it lacked either a plan or an ability to execute thereafter.

Why would Glen Rice drive the lane for a layup with 6.8 seconds left rather than attempt to set up a three-pointer to tie it?

Why, with the Jackets inbounding the ball with 2.8 seconds left, would Brian Oliver attempt a low-percentage pass the length of the court to center Daniel Miller when there probably was time for a mid-court pass, a dribble and a shot? (The pass was intercepted by Travis Leslie.)

Neither team looked March-ready. Or even January-ready. But only one made plays to win the game, and it wasn’t the Jackets.

Georgia coach Mark Fox wasn’t thrilled with his team’s performance but said: “We feel like we’re leaving here with a good win.”

That’s more than Paul Hewitt could say. Of Oliver’s pass, he said: “Just a [bad] read. The next time he’s in that situation, he’ll make a good decision.”

But an impatient fan base isn’t allowing Hewitt much room for error. This was only the second time in 16 years since the Tech-Georgia game was shifted back on campus that the home team lost. Both times, the Dogs have won at Alexander. The last time: 10 years ago in Hewitt’s first season.

The masses aren’t happy on North Avenue. That’s when there are masses. It doesn’t speak well for the feeling around the program when there are 2,000 empty seats in a 9,000-seat arena.

But before the game, Tech athletic director Dan Radakovich stood up for Hewitt.

“We went to the finals of the ACC tournament last year,” Radakovich said. “We went to the second round of the NCAA tournament. That wasn’t a bad year.”

So you’re satisfied?

“You’re never satisfied unless you win it all,” he said. “But there was significant progress over the previous couple of years. I feel like we’re going in the right direction.”

He said he’s aware of the concern over the direction of the program, adding: “I’m not oblivious to it. But Paul and I talk an awful lot about where the program’s going the next couple of years, bringing in some players that we think will [not leave early]. One-and-dones aren’t bad if you understand them from the beginning. It’s the ones who leave when you don’t expect it that really put the program behind the eight ball.”

Three weeks ago the Jackets lost at Kennesaw State. That left the impression the program was under the eight ball, not behind it. (If the loss wasn’t humiliating enough, consider that the Owls are 0-5 since.)

Radakovich, with a slight smile: “Yeah, we hit a bump at Kennesaw State.”

A bump?

“OK, a pothole. A crevice. An iceberg.”

It pays sometime to have a sense of humor when the barbarians are at the gate. But this end-of-game fizzle won’t help Hewitt’s cause.

The teams shot a combined 25-for-62 in the first half. Georgia at least had an excuse. Leslie sat for most of the half with two early fouls. When he returned in the second half, so did some semblance of flow to the Dogs’ offense.

They made five consecutive three-pointers in one stretch. They finally took their first lead at 48-47 on a three-point shot by Sherrard Brantley with 11:36 remaining. The Jackets fought back. Effort wasn’t the issue, execution was. But that has become a familiar sight.

DRad is still in Hewitt’s corner? DRad needs to be fired then. If he can’t see what is going on then he seriously lacks any basketball IQ. Just because Lawal and Favors pushed us to the NCAA tournament last year does not mean that this program is headed in the right direction.

It is hard to believe that anyone, much less the AD couyld be in Hewitt’s corner. The man has proven that he cannot win consistantly with one and done players, that he cannot coach good players to play up to their potential, and though he has a reputation as a good recruiter he has a team with 8 guards and just 3 or 4 bigs. How long will it take for the albatros of a contract to be put aside, for PH to be fired, and for a real coach to be hired. DRad might need to start thinking about his own position if he contihues to support and incompetent and ineffective coach.

Geez-a-pete, what a pathetic and complete lack of coaching will or intelligence!!! Ware goes 7 for 9 from downtown and there is no white jersey anywhere near him. Was DRad implying that they didn’t think Favors was one and done?

Does DRad not have his stomach tied in knots watching the Jackets flail around the court?

Does DRad not realize that it took 2 NBA-caliber point guards (Jack & Bynum) to overcome Hewitt’s offensive coaching and take the team to the Final Four? And that in every other season Tech has woefully underachieved its talent level?

Pretty amazing as bad as Georgia has been this past decade with 3 different coaches and we have a winning record against Tech in basketball. That being said this game isn’t nearly as important as the football game and will have little impact on whether either team makes the post season. Tech lost to Georgia in a big upset the year they made the NCAA tournament finals…. but something tells me this Tech team probably will not make it to the NCAA tournament.

Great win though Dawgs… getting a road win against an ACC team will help some if they are on the bubble in March.

Look for Mark Fox to dominate this series as long as the

Paul Hewitt is darn near unfirable. His contract rolls over every year so that he always has 6 years left and if Tech ever decides not to extend his contract, they owe him at least $6.8M. That’s tough for even the most well-healed program, but given Tech’s recent budget cuts in the athletic department, Hewitt will be around for a long time.

It’s gonna be a long year watching GT basketball. Last year was frustrating because we had greater potential than we showed on the court. This year, we don’t even have talent to compensate for our lack of coaching. I have wanted a new basketball coach for the last three years. Please Dan Rad, save your own job and fire Hewitt. Otherwise, you could find yourself in the unemployment line as well, with your coach you apparently think is doing an adequate job.

RomeDawg – Nice well thought out post. Neither team looked very good – but one of them looked as if they had a plan and that team won.
I don’t agree with Jeff about the basket by Rice – I thought it was the correct move. You go for a steal or foul on the inbounds and at worse you are putting UGA on the line with over 6 seconds left in a 1 point game – and it is not as if UGA looked like they had Anthony Morrow, Mark Price or JJ Reddick taking FTs. UGA got the ball in quickly and ran a few seconds before the foul reducing the time – but there still should have been enough to have a 25 footer or so.
GT’s last play was classic Hewitt – if they have practised the last second play it sure didn’t show.

DawginTX – You are correct about Hewitt’s contract being a lesson for any AD but I expect him to be bought out eventually. GT stops paying Gailey in the next year and the ACC contract with the World Wide Leader kicks in about the same time – meaning GT will have more cash. 2011 is going to be a very long season in Alexander Memorial and the empty seats and lack of support are getting to the point that the cost of keeping Hewitt is greater than the cost of negotiating a buyout (I’d guess 60-70% of the $7MM over a 5 year period).

Wow what a string for a basketball blog in the state of Georgia! Great to see. Now excuse me if someone has already addressed this (as I’ve not yet read all posts) but Glen Rice was absolutely CORRECT to take the basket UGA gave him with 6.8 seconds left. Probably was told to do so if the opportunity presented itself. The logic, Mr Schultz, ole basketball guru, was to then turn around and foul (ideally Robinson or Barnes (not sure if he was in the game) and hope for a miss (or two). Not a bad strategy given the Dawgs FT percentage tonight. In fact, this was this was a much better strategy than trying to jack up a rushed 3 with the entire Bulldog team spread out defending the 3-point line.

As an impartial observer, I have to tell Tech fans this: your team played GREAT defense for two-thirds of the game. Georgia never got an inside game going, and let’s face it, they just got red-hot from outside in the second half and took the momentum from Tech.

The way I see it, Georgia just went out and EARNED the win, it wasn’t Tech GIVING it to them.

Let’s give credit where credit is due: the Bulldogs played a heck of a game and deserved to win it. And it was a 1-point game, for gosh sakes, not a 35-point debacle. And this Georgia team IS good and could win 17-20 games this year… it’s not like it’s a 7th-grade team.

Remember what this was, too — January basketball. The games that really count (for both teams) come in January when conference play starts. If Tech gets hot in the ACC like last year, I think you’ll see BOTH major state universities in the NCAA tournament.

You don’t have to fire Hewitt….just remove him from coaching responsibilities, which he has repeatedly demonstrated that he cannot handle. Just not having him show up would be an improvement. Hire a competent JC coach at an “introductory salary” and the program will show an immediate improvement. Over 2,000 seats were empty tonight for the “Georgia” game. DRAD is speaking out of the side of his mouth. He only fired Gailey because someone put up the money to allow him to do it. Obviously nobody has done that for firing Hewitt or he would be gone. So being without the money to fire him, he has to support him – simple as that.

To all the bloggers who comment about the 2,000 empty seats: The Hawks also played last night. Given the fact that GT athletic teams compete for fans against the Falcons,Hawks and Braves, its a tough task to fill every seat.

Let’s see:

The FB HC, that would be CPJ, lets UGAy score late in order to get the ball back to give his team a chance to win (hopefully in OT) and he is hailed as some sort of Genius, meanwhile…………..

The BB HC, that would be CPH, sends UGAy to the foul line (aka “lets them score”) in order to get the ball back so his team can possibly TIE the Game & win in OT just like CPJ, yet only ONE of those guys is thought of as a “Genius” buy the AJC Sportswriters.

From where I sit BOTH CPJ & CPH have huge problems in their FB & BB Programs going forwards.

When GT FB players make mistakes, the GT Fanbase puts EVERYTHING on the players and claim that “the schemes are sound it was the players that screwed up”, YET, when B-Ball players take bad shots & commit turnovers, NONE of the GT fanbase calls the schemes “sound” and instead of blaming it on the players they put all the blame on the HC.

The SAME EXACT things are happening in BOTH programs, but the Typical-GT-Fan interprets them very differently, and on top of all that CPJ is making MUCH MORE than CPH, CPJ is pulling down between $2.3 and $2.5 Million.

I am glad I got a great education from my instructors at GT, but the majority of the folks that went there are very undesirable to be around.

To all the loser-GT-fans out there if you are gonna give CPH a hard time then you have to also turn up the HEAT on CPJ.

Refute those FACTS, GNLs, (that stands for geeky-nerd-losers), I happen to be one of the “normal” folks that graduated from GT, beelieve it or not, there are a few of us out here.

GT is not where it needs to be in Basketball right now- I will not say PH does not know Basketball but he is having a hard time proving he knows how to coach- I was shocked at the zone defense- but then everytime they went away from it UGA scores- #3 was beating you man up with him or run the box on him like they use to do at Price and Scott!

Someone needs to inform Oliver that saying “they aren’t that good at shooting outside” or “defending one on one” after you loose at the hand of one of these things isn’t such a smart idea. That sounds like what coach would have been telling them in the locker room anyway. Regardless, it makes you look worse by loosing to a team that’s not that good(?)…..

mmmmmmmmm as a UGA fan just a few observations

I cant understand why we can’t shoot free throws better. Coach Fox said on the radio he had already made adjustments to the free throw practice and how he was going to have to make more. The announcers were talking about how impressive the Dawgs were shooting free throws in practice that day so maybe it’s not coaching, maybe it’s mental. Coaches aren’t the be all end all as most that blog here think they are. It’s the players that play the game.

Speaking of which, GT has no players anymore. They are just not very talented. I think any rational person would see like DRAD that the Tech team was in the ACC finals last year and made the second round of the tournament. Do you fire your coach if he doesn’t win the national championship every year? I think that he should have answered the moron who asked the question ” Yes I am satisfied.” Only one team in the nation wins it all and from the perspective that college athletics SHOULD be placed in, I think they had a great year. I’m no expert on the coach at GT but just because he has no players due to the fact they all went pro, is no reason not to let him continue to coach. The unrest comes from the same place the “fire Richt” crowd comes from. and that’s kids who don’t know any better and morons who’s total sense of pride in their lives are games played by 20 year old kids.

Reading the blogs here Tech people continue to throw up the academic angle. I think they must be in labs about 20 hours a day learning to build those tricycles, using their slide rules and don’t get out much. The myth of a better education at GT vs. UGA has been busted long ago and many, many times. Especially when you are talking about the academics of athletes at the respective schools. In ANY measure you or the NCAA could possibly come up with, UGA athletes out perform those at GT. Even though the Techies take all those GSU classes. So lets just give the academic thing a rest.

Who are all the “masses” Shultz is referring to in this article? I didn’t know Tech had “masses.” Where are they?

Although I see nothing wrong with it, Tech plays in Alexander Memorial. That means they have absolutely zero grounds to say anything remotely negative about Stegman.

The Tech cheerleaders aren’t too cute, are they? But I bet they are bright and wonderful people.

Possibly one of the most one sided officiated games I have seen in a long time. Travis Leslie called for touch fouls, one obviously an offensive foul on Tech, yet Thompkins and Price mugged all night. Even the last drive by Robinson and kick out to Ware, Robinson was being tackled while trying to get the ball back out to Ware.

If UGA really makes any improvement this year, Trey is going to have to play better D and stop missing so many short shots. They team will have to play defense the whole game and stop missing free throws.

I am certain DRad is feeling the pressure to relieve CPH of his duties and I still believe CPH is done by the end of the season unless the program shows serious progress between now and then. Always the possibility he gets one more year while the new arena is built. By then the funds from paying off Gailey should be available to pay CPH. $45 million on new facilities should mean GT can find $7 mil. to buy out CPH. On the positive side the Layd Jackets took care of business with the puppies.

We’ve been beyond patient, considering ONE winning acc record in TEN years:

2000–2001 Georgia Tech 8–8 T–5th NCAA 1st Round
2001–2002 Georgia Tech 7–9 T–5th
2002–2003 Georgia Tech 7–9 5th NIT 3rd Round
2003–2004 Georgia Tech 9–7 T–3rd NCAA Runner-up
2004–2005 Georgia Tech 8–8 T–4th NCAA 2nd Round
2005–2006 Georgia Tech 4–12 T–10th
2006–2007 Georgia Tech 8–8 T–6th NCAA 1st Round
2007–2008 Georgia Tech 7–9 T–7th
2008–2009 Georgia Tech 2–14 12th
2009–2010 Georgia Tech 7–9 7th NCAA 2nd Round

Overall at Georgia Tech: 67–93

Hewitt is now 4-7 against UGA

Appathy has beyond set in: I *LOVED* GT basketball more than any other sport…had season tickets for years…let them expire in discust about 3 years ago…I can’t stand to watch them for free on TV anymore (didn’t watch UGA because I knew we would find a way to Blewitt).

Some say, “We can’t afford to fire him.” I say we can’t afford not to and should have 7 years ago.
What cost more,

(a) 7 mil
or
(b) 1.4 per year, for a couple/few more years + continued destruction of the program + continued errosion of the fan base + further emptying of seats + further humiliation from loosing to Kennesaw State, UGA, etc, and THEN paying the 7 mil?
You don’t have to know advanced math to know that (a) is much less than (b), yet we pick (b) year after year.
Since we had the money to put into the arena, then we had the money to spend and our AD CHOOSE not to fire him.

Even the Wall Street Journal knew this years ago, per this article:

Dawgs have got to shoot better from the stripe.

That was an awful effort at the end. Trey missed the front end of a one-one with about a minute left, and then we missed both to put the game away with 4 seconds left. Georgia was fortunate that the second miss hit a foot rather than being cleanly rebounded.

That said, Georgia didn’t play well, and they still won. There seems to be a pattern developing in the rivalry.

I’m not a fair-weather fan. In fact, I struggle to watch the Jackets because I get too into it. However, watching the BB team is just too painful. They have no plan, no teamwork, no strategy – and that comes down to coaching (or lack of it). I can’t handle paying hard-earned money to attend a game only to have my heart ripped out. Last year’s team had Favors. Hewitt figured out how to use Favors around the ACC tournament time or Favors started smelling the draft and realized the boys in Kentucky were now better than he was, his stock was going down. Gani Lawal was one of those overated players that looked good getting off the bus. The guy was lazy, no ball skills, could not hit a free throw if his life depended on it, but Hewitt was determined to run the offense through him. Lawal was just assigned to the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League, after being drafted in the second round, to be developed I would guess. Something Hewitt fails to do. And Hewitt has never known how to handle guards. The ultimate failure was how he handled Matt Causey. Game after game Causey would be playing great, Tech would be playing great and Hewitt would yank Causey and replace him with the freshman Maurice Miller. Tech would fall into its happy place, confusion, the lead would slip and finally after the volume of failure had been turned up 10 times Hewitt would bring the hard working gutsy Causey back in. This kid never complained and will always be one of Tech’s favorites. Someone should have sat Causey down and told him he was trying too hard for Hewitt’s style of play. He could shoot foul shots and all the things Hewett considers eyewash. Antony Morrow and Chris Bosh were on the other side of disappointing. These two guys are now some of the finest players in the NBA. Instead of disappointing the receiver of their pro talents they shocked the basketball world on how good they were. Who knew they had been buried in a system that would make Cleopatra look pain. In short there is no joy in watching Tech basketball like there was in the Cremins era. I was at a cocktail party last night, with ex Tech players, who had to be reminded the game was even being played at that moment.

COULD uga BEAT KENTUCKY, TENNESSEE, OR FLORIDA RIGHT NOW?

UGA won the 2nd half againstTech, beating them by 7 points. Fox made a few adjustments, the offense played with more discipline in the 2nd half, Travis Leslie was back in the game, Ware hit the 3-pointers.

GT plays a rather haphazard offense under Hewitt. If you simply have superior athletes who can continually drive to the basket to create production, you can win. (And Tech still has, overall, better athletes than UGA–but the gap is closing.) But you can still be beat by better-coached, better disciplined teams. And when you don’t have superior athletes, you lose most of the time.

You have to wonder what Fox could have done with Tech’s athletes over the years. (And that’s still an open question, UGA fans.)

Could UGA beat KENTUCKY and the others right now?

That’s a clear NO–and that Fox’s challenge for December. But Fox has earned a little faith, and with Thompkins working back to full strength, you have to believe the Bulldogs will be able to compete with the current BIG 3 in the SEC come January.

Don’t know if this point has yet been posted, but I’ll offer it just in case:

The loss is certainly not a deathknell for Hewitt. After all, a one-point game can be decided by myriad events. However, that GT plays its in-state rival and 20% of the arena is empty is the bad sign. Or a good one, if you’re hoping DRAD pulls the trigger on CPH. My thinking says that if attendance sags, esp. in games with UNC/Duke/UGA (opponents who should fill the arena), then CPH’s tenure may get shortened.

The is the problem you get when you hire someone as Athletics Director who is not a Tech Man.

A true Tech Man/Woman feels pain every time we lose to The Cesspool of the South, regardless of the sport. This guy walks around in a fog with a Joker-like smile on his face claiming “the program is headed in the right direction.” It’s more like headed in the FRIGHT direction.

Agree with DawginTx, both teams were pretty bad last night. UGA looked like the more athletic team, and should have won by 10, but they just don’t seem to have it all together. They don’t look like they are playing hard. GaTech just isn’t that good this year. They will struggle in the ACC. UGA will finish behind UT, UK, UF and Vandy unless they start playing with passion.

Not January form for sure … a lot of shots rimmed out, and free throw shooting was mediocre. But glad we were nailing the threes. Great win for the Dawgs. And a solid win on a tough opponent’s court.

I’m obviously no Tech fan, but for you, Jeff, to question the decision to get the ‘2′ then foul was exactly the correct one. As ‘bigdawg’ posted earlier, we can’t shoot free-throws for crap, and if we hadn’t had young Mr. Robinson, and is speed, that allowed several seconds to click off the clock before Tech could foul us they’d have had a real chance to win it at the end.

Tell you Jeff, if I were Tech’s AD after this ‘interview’, I’d offer you an ultimatum – ‘Lay off the smarta$$ cracks about our program or find yourself with no access to any of our coaches and/or players on any team…get it?’ Then you, Jeff, can make your living being a smarta$$ with Georgia (don’t count on that lasting very long) or the pro teams here – they love that stuff.

back in the 90’s my Dad had a shirt that read, “Double Dippin’ the Dawgs”…it referred of course to Tech beating UGA in both Basketball and Football. But now this sports combo makes that impossible for me to get my own “Double Dippin’ the Dawgs” shirt. I think that Kennesaw State fans might be able to get a ” Double Dippin’ the Jackets” shirt if they ever decide to play football in the future.

I honestly think Tech played a good game last night but went cold early in 2nd half. I’m a Tech grad and have lofty aspirations but I have realistic side. We played a UGA squad with a bunch of Seniors and Juniors. Most of our minutes come from Freshmen and Sophmores with Iman and Miller being the exception. I don’t care how good of a coach you are, player EXPERIENCE does matter. I could hear Hewitt telling the young guys what he wanted and they would go out and do something completely different…….lack of EXPERIENCE or they’re just stupid. Believe it or not, GT has a better FT shooting percentage, less turnovers and better movement on the offensive end of the court. We still need to work on our shot selection and hitting open shots when we have them. I think we’ll upset some teams as we go into the ACC stretch…….but what do I know. It’s always easier to coach a game the day after it’s over.

Personally, I don’t care. Tech’s athletic department, whatever the reason, doesn’t make a lot of money, as the clown who calls himself “UGA AD” will tell you. He has plenty of other monikers I’m sure, but that’s beside the point.

Gailey’s contract comes off the books this year. We have to pay off Hewitt regardless of whether we keep him or fire him. I say we keep him and let him keep embarrassing himself. Spend the money that we are getting from Gailey’s contract on a special teams coordinator for the football team. At this point, do any Tech fans care about basketball anymore?

Football makes more money anyway, and Johnson is actually a good coach. He deserves our support. Let Hewitt continue to embarrass himself against the elite ACC competition (and even the dregs of the basketball world in UGA). He’s gonna make his money one way or the other. Why pay him to leave?

Another classy post my friend. I see you post at times on GT blogs and i don’t mind because you don’t bash our program and usually offer something positive instead of a negative. I hear what you are saying about drad using “coach speak” but he needs to be in the corner of the fan base because WE pay for everything! We are so tired with this product on the court and most GT fans have banded together as you can tell and are saying FIRE HIM or we will NEVER come back to support or pay 1 penny to this program. Plain and simple really.

I think fox will do well at georgia. We have a coach who is 30 games under .500 for gods sake lex. We are the laughing stock in the ACC really. An average road game in the ACC for us means getting blown out the gym by 20 +. Just go back and look if you don’t believe me. On a night when UGA didn’t really impress, we STILL MANAGE TO LOSE. No time outs at the end of the game as always for coach paul GUMP! I’m done and i sent drad an email that he needs to EARN HIS PAYCHECK AND FIRE THIS LOSER! GET HIM OUT OF HERE AND LET THE DOOR SLAP HIM IN HIS ASS ON THE WAY OUT! We actually pay this man for all of his terrible work. I wish i could make millions and be 30 games under .500!! DRAD, will you hire me to be a loser for 7 years and pay me hewitt’s contract? I can do what he does too!!!!!! With the best of them! As a GT alum, I am tired of losing sporting events to UGA. Aside from one or two baseball games, has Tech beaten UGA in any sport in the last two years? The athletic administration needs to examine where we are in relation to other programs in the state and Southeast and what a proper position should be. I recall a statement about lowered expectations from either this AD or the previous one. That has certainly been the hallmark in the recent past. We may not be able to compete in football with the big boys because of academic requirements. That is not true for basketball. Duke seems to be capable of outstanding basketball on an annual basis. The same is true for Stanford. Tech academics are on a plane with those two schools yet they routinely outperform Tech in many sports. There is a reason for that and it rests in the caliber of coaching and administrative personnel in the athletic department. It is folly to build a new basketball facility when the institution does not have the talent to fill it up.

Also, obvious that Radakovich supports Hewitt. He does not have 7,000,000 dollars to show his non-support. The few Tech folks I know want him gone but say nobody has the funds to end the brilliant contract he has. UGA in similar position with Mark Richt????

I finally understand DRad’s basketball plans. Since we need a place to play the next two years, he is keeping PH in order to reduce the attendance at our games so that he can play bball in OKeefe gym (I guess the old court at the Naval Armory is closed!) and not have to worry about having enough seats. Two hundred or less will probably be the attendance.

It seems like every game this year has had an opponent shoot a career high in three pointers. I could understand (maybe) if we had Favors/Lawal/Peacock sitting in the paint, but this year we are suppose to be small and quick. I agree with small, but quick? Especially with a coach who has been touted as being a defensive coach – because defense never has an off night!

As I have stated previously and GTBob also says – FIRE DRAD! I will predict that we will go 3-13 in the ACC if we are lucky. We haven’t done better than that other GREAT BBall school,, the other Tech. OH, I forgot, they aren’t a bball school. Then with PH, neither are we, but somehow VT can win.

“Midseason firings in college basketball should only bother you if you’re a college coach or someone who still believes in a world that hasn’t existed in a long time (and perhaps never existed at all). Many still like to think of college coaches as “educators” who help “mold young men” into “student-athletes” so that they can “graduate” and “contribute to society” via a “productive life after basketball.” There are some coaches like that, I guess. God bless them. But all that stuff is secondary to recruiting high-level prospects and winning games with them, and if you don’t do that you won’t last long regardless of how many young men you graduate.’

GT basketball is a tough gig. They play basketball in the toughest conference in the land, continuously lose players to the NBA, and have a coach that either can’t game plan or could care less because he has 7 million reasons not to care. It’s kind of like UGA football in the SEC. Toughest in the land, players leaving for the draft or jail, and a coach (who’s a good man) but seems to be more interested in other worthwhile activities outside of coaching football. GT basketball will return to its glory days when Hewitt is gone and a new coach with a little more fire comes to town.

BTW- I’m a huge UGA fan but the UGA fan base needs to lose the whole “We Run This State” comment- it’s getting old and has lost its originality. Here lately, Florida, Alabama, and Auburn have been running this state!!

The bad news is that Hewitt will probably survive after this season just because of our weak OOC schedule. The only tough team we play OOC all year is Syracuse who we lost to. It’s very conceivable that we could win all 7 of our remaining OOC games, go 6-10 (i am being optimistic) in the ACC and finish the season with a 17-14 record. We will go to the NIT. Get beat by some other terrible team and DRad will spin it as a successful season. Then we can all come back here next year and continue the fire Hewitt campaign. Hewitt has lost the support of GT fans and supporters. DRAD probably recognized this last season, but wasn’t in a position financially to cut ties with the coach. Cash flow is the issue, I believe. Tech will owe Hewitt around $8 million over six years if they fire him, and they are still paying Chan 1 million annually. But, things are looking better: Tech will see more money annually from the new TV contract(5-7 million annually I think), and Gailey’s contract runs out this year, so the cash flow situation is improving. DRAD will be in a better position this year to make a change.

Hewitt thinks he can change things and turn the program around, but I think he will find that it is too late. The fans have already stopped showing up(look at last night’s attendance), and supporters are screaming at DRAD every chance they get. This will eventually filter down to Hewitt’s players. They like the man, but they start to see the situation(They can read, and can see the half empty coliseum), and with every loss, they start to doubt their coach’s abilities. The result is probably a long losing stretch this year with no recovery as confidence wanes. The only way Hewitt can change things is to coach a team of lesser talent up and have a great season, but I doubt this will happen.

Everyone speaks of Hewitt as a great recruiter and how Tech will miss this if they let him go. But, I couldn’t disagree more. GT’s biggest weakness has been recruiting the one and done player without having the talent behind this player when he leaves. And, as bad as this is, the biggest weakness on the team has been the lack of recruiting a quality point since Jarrett Jack, arguably the most important position on the court. So, I disagree completely with Hewitt being the great recruiter angle on these blogs.

DRad should be more concerned with the 2000 empty seats than the loss, plus ~30% of the seats that were occupied had red-clad bodies sitting in them. The team did not have a clue on how to close out the game last night, and Hewitt has lost the fan base. So if we’re legally beholden to him for the $7.1M buy-out, whether we have to scrape it up after this season or five years from now, then pull the plug before another slew of season ticket holders are lost.

We all know about the contract, and how intractable it makes the situation. The only thing we can do is ….. not go to the games. It will be very painful to eat $7M we don’t have in the Athletic budget. If we as a fan base really want a change, we have to make the alternative to that scenario even worse. the only thing that comes to mind is having DRad look at a half-full thrillerdome for most of the season.

All those Tech alum in Atlanta and they won’t even show up to support thier teams…..Let’s face it Tech will always be a second tier sports school because thier fans (not the students with no money to spend) won’t even come to thier games…I’d be embarrassed if I were a Tech athlete. High school athlete’s take note….why go to a school where your own alum doesn’t even care…..Can You Dig It!

As bad as the Dawgs’ fortunes have been, they can always count on beating their little brother Georgia Tech on the athletic field (or court in this case). Used to be, the Bumble bees would take solace that their academic credentials were better than those in Athens, but this has also eroded away to the point where the academics at UGA are virtually as demanding as GT. In two years, UGA will have its own engineering schools too. At that point, the only thing that the Bugs will be able to brag about is their location in Atlanta’s inner city. They will rally to, “We are closer to the Varsity than the Dawgs!
The Jackets should have never quit the SEC. They quit because Alabama gave them such a smackdown one year that several of the Bugs actually wound up in traction at Grady Hospital. Pat Dye would say that the Bugs weren’t man enough. Now they are proud members of the JV team, the ACC.

Hewitt is not a good collegiate level coach! Good recruiter… yes. Good coach…no. Udofia looks lost most of the time. I scouted this kid I know his talent. He would have been better off going out of state where his talents would have been developed instead he chose to stick it out with Hewitt and Hewitt does nothing with him. The guy is a great leader and Hewitt knows this. Instead he allows Rice and Shumpert to do whatever and the team looks like a bunch of kids playing a game of pick up. Georgia Tech do yourself a favor and realease Hewitt of his duties. Make him VP of Recruiting but allow a real coach to coach the team. It may be some assistant coaches in the league who would love the opportunity or where is Felton from UGA and his staff get one of them. Hewitt has to go. This year’s program is a waste.

Why support with Body or money a program you know is quickly becoming a laughing stock of ACC basketball. Tech fans are proud just like UGA fans who would probably respond the same way. But, basketball is more important to many fans. This was a dismal program until Cremins resurrected the program and made GT fans proud, and now they see how bad its gotten. If I wanted a change for the better, the last thing I would do is show up to support the team. DRAD has to get this straight in his mind. You can only ask the fan base for so much charity and make no mistake about it. Alot of pressure was put on the alumni to pony up for the basketball program and Georgia Tech. Now without an enjoyable product you will lose everything. Hire a no name coach with no expectations and as he turns the program into a respectable game of basketball the fans will show up and cheer even when they lose. But the excuses and the overwhelming sad coaching is so apparent that most high school girls basketball coaches are far better than Hewitt at coaching the fundamentals. This is not about how Hewitt manages the program although he does not do that well, it is not about winning and losing, although he has a losing record in the ACC and has NEVER had a winning season in the ACC, it is not about the graduation rate although that is awful as well, it is not about anythiong other than Tech deserves better and if Hewitt was true to tech he would say the same thing.

2006: 9191 (sellout)
2008: 8368 (starting to fall)
2010: 6700 (Crashing)

Between the 2004-2005 season and the 2007-2008 season we sold out every game. Then we slipped down into the mid 7000’s on average attendance. This season we are averaging 5735 a game. I am not a Hewitt hater. I want him to succeed. After attending the game last night, I came to the conclusion that he has to grow as a coach. You cannot yell at your players the entire–calling out various sets and telling players where to position themselves on the floor. I am not suggesting that Hewitt shoudl sit quietly like some other noted college coaches. I am suggesting that many of the aforementioned yellings should be taught in practice and contingency set, defenses, offenses can also be taught in practice as I understand that situations change. Well coached teams are prepared during practice. The coach should yell (if at all) when a player is not illustrating an ability to remember and execute that he was taught in practice. Because of the way Hewitt yells out instructions 90% of the game, one wonders how he uses practices.

Hey Snoop Dawg; Why is it that a mighty SEC team such as UGA gave up over 500 plus yards to the little junior ACC team of Tech. Your words right. You should be asking yourself why a mighty SEC team loaded with high school all americans can barely beat a little ACC team such as Tech, and on your on damn field no less. Which team recruits the 4 and 5 star players every year? I watched that game and it looked like to me that the better team lost.

Comparing UGA’s academics to Tech is a joke and you know it. It may be better because of Jan Kemp, but not because UGA people wanted a better school. Most UGA fans were kicking and screaming at the higher academic standards, because they thought it would hurt their mighty football teams recruiting. Why was Ga State and Tech not combined years ago moron. Because the regents who are dominated with UGA alumni wouldn’t allow it. Why? Because they were afraid Tech would be able to recruit as well as UGA with a full liberal arts curriculum, thats why. Why will UGA have an engineering program? For the same damn reason, pure corruption at the highest level. I doubt Tech feels threatened in the least with UGA starting engineering light in Athens though.

2002–2003 Georgia Tech 7–9 5th NIT 3rd Round

-that had a lying cheating man like vince dooley for their coach and ad. wasnt ugag on probation like every 4 years under the evil dooley?

-that tosses tons and tons of garbage onto their own campus and any venue they attend. i heard that shreveport under no circumstances ever wants to see the ugag fan base back in shreveport. EVER. st simons is almost to that point.

-that had a nationally written newspaper article describing how the broadcast team of tv announcers commented on the FACT that the ugag fan base was the WORST bunch of out of control drunks they had ever witnessed in 40 years of doing college fb broadcasts. now that is outright shameful.

-that had its most recent married ad arrested for drunk driving while sniffing the panties of the prostitute that was riding with him.

Second, there’s nothing special to being an engineering nerd. Engineers are supervised by managers and leaders. That would be UGA grads. Most have one or more nerdy Tech engineers doing the technical work for them.
Look up the stats: UGA’s on the rise academically while GT’s on the fall. The GPA and SAT scores for UGA freshmen are actually just a little higher than Tech’s. Wait until we have our own engineering school!

It is really about like us keeping Ray Goff from 1993-1995 when it was obvious that he was a great recruiter who just was not that good of a coach. We had so much talent in 1992 that it was unbelievable. The SEC east was down and we still blew it. Beat OSU in the bowl game, went 10-2 and everyone felt tlike we failed. It was obvious he needed to go after the 93 season but Dooley hung on for 2 more years.

You just made my point regarding the recruits. UGA recruits the 4 and 5 star players, not Tech. If one team has 4 and 5 star players, then why are they giving up 500 plus yards to the little ACC school, and winning by a missed extra point?

Gracious Tom B give the academic thing a rest! The myth that a GT education is somehow “loftier” than an education from the UGA has been busted long, long ago and many, many times. And especially when you compare the academic achievements of athletes. The performance of UGA athletes is superior to GT in academic performance to GT in any way you or the NCAA want to measure it. Even though the athletes there take all those classes at that Ivory Tower of Academia, Georgia State. Every time I hear someone from Tech crow about their academics I want to ask what engineering firms are in the running for the services of Josh Nesbitt. Or is he just going straight to NASA? Maybe the firm of Ball and Hamilton, LTD could be interested?

And as to the all those 5 star recruits UGA always gets, since you don’t have anything else to do, look up the last 4 years and see how many of those 5 stars you can find that have come to Athens, I’ll wait…………… I will give you that in general better players chose Athens over inner city Atlanta to go to school……just as any reasonable person would.

Back it up with some facts Phil, and I’ll listen to your nonsense.

Since you don’t have any thing else to do Phil, why don’t you look up how many 4 and 5 star players UGA recruited over the past five years and compare it to Tech’s. Go ahead….I’m waiting.

which school is described by the following?
-that routinely has a dozen football players arrested yearly.
-that is an also ran in its own conference in spite of having a ‘dream’ team every year in recruiting.
-that is so inept against uf it makes gt’s record against the frogs seem mild in comparison .
-that has a student body that is so ignorant that they urinate on the carpet of their own school library. so much for education eh?
-that had the jan kemp affair and the jim harrick classes and the cheating by the school of pharmacy.
-that had its most recent married ad arrested for drunk driving while sniffing the panties of the prostitute that was riding with him.

we routinely have the largest group of natoinal merit scholars on our campus. meanwhile ugag is up for the top partay school in the country.

i would be willing to bet we have more ceo’s than ugag does.

and i have not seen a single reputable mag rank uga ahead of gt in acedemics. cheating lying stealing drunkeness yes ….. acedemics no!

a ugag astronaut? lmao. more likely a ugag janitor.

our endowment is bigger by a large factor.

we never had any of our school supply the answers to a national test like YOUR pharmacy prof did. if you guys are so academic why would you have to cheat?

that is an easy question to answer…. cause the dawgs are lying cheating and pathetic.

Lying Vince Dooley? When and where?
Probation every 4 years?
AD “sniffing” panties?
Urinating on library carpet?
Pharmacy school cheating?
Shreveport never wants UGA back?
Losing record against UF?
Frogs?
Nationally written article about terrible fan base?

Where is the proof behind your allegations? Truth? You are even dumber than I thought the first go round.

How about your lying, cheating coach (O’Liary)?
How about your drunk, pot smoking QB’s (Hamilton and Dewberry)?
How about your academic cheating scandal causing forfeitures of football games and other sports?
How about 8 out of nine?
How about free cokes and hot dogs?
How about immature yellow-wigged nerds bopping up and down to the Budweiser song?

Yeah, I’d be proud too of my school for these great accomplishments!

@ Bob To think that UGA is not at the level of academia as GT. ESPECIALLY when talking about athletics, which, btw is what we are discussing. UGA is ahead of Tech in any way you or the NCAA can possibly measure.

As far as career goes, do I believe that engineers are the big money earners? No I know they are not. My dads firm employs them. The big money earners are business people and the biggest business people in this state at least, are UGA grads.

Give it up Snoop Dawg. Read and understand.

GT is ranked 7th among public universities in the 2011 edition of America’s best colleges by US News and World report. GT has been ranked in the top 10 of public universities for a decade or more.

GT’s College of Engineering moved up one spot in the undergraduate rankings to fourth for engineering programs at universities where the highest degree is a Ph.D.

The School of Industrial and Systems Engineering maintained its top ranking and Aerospace Engineering ranked second in its discipline. Mechanical Engineering moved up one spot to join Biomedical Engineering, and Civil Engineering with all ranked third. Electrical and Environmental Engineering both ranked 5th among their peers.

Georgia Tech’s College of Management rose from 31st last year to 28th this year.

For the first time, U.S. News & World Report polled high school guidance counselors. Georgia Tech ranked 2nd among public institutions, tied with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and the University of Michigan. In rankings including both public and private universities, Georgia Tech tied for 22nd with Boston College, Emory University, Rice University, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Southern California, University of Michigan and Washington University-St. Louis.

Yes, lets do take a look at it. Overwhelming majority are misdemeanor driving offenses, while you currently have a player that was arrested for rape. And let’s not forget good ol’ Houston a few years back who was busted in a nationwide FBI drug sting. He was also hunted down by U.S. Marshalls last year after he assaulted a woman at gunpoint in Marietta. And whoever that thug was that played at Tech for a couple of years that was involved in the Wizards locker room gun standoff last season as well.

DRad has to be in Hewitt’s corner, for now. The season is 3 weeks old. At the end of the season it will be evident what has to happen.
While players have to make plays, there has to be some coaching to get them into the right position to make plays. The most egregious coaching misstep was calling the timeout after Rice made the layup with 6.8 seconds left. I didn’t mind the layup to cut it to 1 point, but you just called timeout to set up the play and you should have told them THEN to go for the steal and then foul immediately (which is what you did). But now you have no TO to set up something after UGA missed their FT’s. THAT is poor coaching. And I’ve seen a lot of it the last 5 years.

I know of a number of people who let their season tickets go this year for that same reason. Maybe when the coliseum is virtually empty, D Rad will have the guts to do something. Tech Forever is right. We made the final four in 2004 in spite of Hewitt, not because of him. It just happened that we had a group who could play without coaching. I did not watch but I am told that in the Georgia debacle, we once again had no time out left when we had the ball out of bounds with only a few seconds left. That is typical Hewitt coaching. Mindless, aimless, basketball is his game. I honestly don’t think he has a clue. The guy is the worst coach in the country. I am done until he is gone and, as I said, the list is growing rapidly of those who feel the same. Wake up D Rad.
