Weekend Predictions: Cam Newton and Auburn conquer all

cheese 001

Before this season’s final week of dead, solid, perfect, financial locks — give or take an Alabama meltdown and the forgotten inevitability that Steve Spurrier would make Dabo Swinney look like he had a head full of nougat (what was I thinking picking Clemson last week?) — we have this update from the world of high of finance:

Stanley Ho, a billionaire casino owner in Macau (of course), who clearly has money and nougat to burn, won an action. For a castle? No. A vintage car? No. Video of Brett Favre’s last pass completion? No.

Rather, Stanley Ho, billionaire, just paid $330,000 for two white “truffles,” which is French for, “Fungus found in dirt or sometimes under old chicken lo mein forgotten in the back of fridge and often resembling the facial expression of Nick Saban after blowing a 24-0 lead at home. Roll [Over] Tide!”

Mmmm. Delectable, delicious fungus. Does that come with fries?

Mmmm. Delectable, delicious fungus. Does that come with fries?

So Stanley Ho paid $165,000 each for two pieces of fungus. You know, there actually was a time when I thought A.J. Green deserved an MBA for getting $1,000 for his Independence Bowl jersey. Now I’m thinking he got ripped off.

Even Cecil “Huggy Bear” Newton didn’t ask for $330,000 when he was pimping his son to Mississippi State.  And Cam isn’t even a fungus!

Seriously, I don’t know what Cam Newton is. Some indestructible being? Did he conquer Tokyo with Godzilla and Monster Zero? Regardless of whether you think this kid is wholesome or dirtier than his Polluted Padre, this dude is an unrockable rock star. I’m not sure there has ever — ever — been a college player who has performed at the level he has while all of the world outside of Auburn looked at him and thought: “You sir, are fungus, at $180,000 to $200,000 retail.”

And so, as much I’d like to crawl out on the upset limb in the SEC championship game, I can’t do it. South Carolina is good. But not that good. And whatever happened last week in Tuscaloosa must have something to do with cosmic forces. This team’s not losing. The line is 5. Auburn wins the SEC and covers.

Look out! It’s the three-headed Cam-Monster Zero!

Not Involving Cam Newton

ACC championship: Virginia Tech has won 10 straight since losing to James Madison. Here’s an idea: Schedule JMU for the spring game instead next year. Florida State was impressive last week against Florida, but who wasn’t impressive this year against Florida, except, well, you know. Arf. The FSU Board of Regents is sponsoring a Bobby Bowden Pin Cushion Doll to the first 10,000 fans. Hokies cover 4.

Big 12 championship: So Nebraska plays in a conference title game, then bolts for the Big Ten when it’s over? That makes for an interesting trophy ceremony with the conference commissioner if the Cornhuskers win. But they won’t. Oklahoma covers 5.

Conference USA: You think either George O’Leary (Notre Dame’s coach for seven minutes) or June Jones (former Falcons coach) ever envisioned the Conference USA title would be the highlight of their season? Oh well. Georgia may face the winner of this titanic tilt in the Liberty. Central Florida covers 9 over SMU.

NFL Value Menu

(Buy 3 games, win a copy of Derek Anderson’s new book, “Laughing in Last Place.”)

Matt Ryan threw everything but a backdoor slider in November.

Matt Ryan threw everything but a slider in November.

Falcons at Tampa: There haven’t been any grand proclamations from Raheem Morris this week about the Bucs being the NFL’s greatest team. So much for bulletin board material. No matter. The Falcons have won five straight, Matt Ryan completed 69.3 percent of his passes in November for seven touchdowns and zero interceptions and suddenly the franchise is national TV material. Don’t get dizzy from the altitude. Falcons cover 3.

Rams at Cardinals: Derek Anderson was caught by TV cameras laughing late in Arizona’s 27-6 loss to San Francisco and acted like a 2-year-old when asked about it, but at least he had the decency to apologize the next day. What Darnell Dockett’s excuse? The NFL’s Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Twitter is out of control. His latest short-attention span rants included to “[bleep] anybody” (the world starts with an “F”) who dared question him or said the reporter wasn’t “mann[sic] enough to ask me … why Im Laughing!” I don’t know. Because you’re stupid? St. Louis covers 3.

Steelers at Ravens: Ben Roethlisberger has a foot injury. Let’s assume it wasn’t from stumbling in the men’s room again. Take the Steelers and 3 — and in a straight-up upset.

stratego

It says here Belichick will capture Ryan's flag.

Saints at Bungles: Cincinnati has lost eight straight and here’s an actual factual: The team has been outscored 58-3 in the second half of the last two losses. That’s a sign of players either quitting or drinking from the same Kool-Aid bowl at halftime. Either way, somebody’s going to take the fall. Does Marvin Lewis’s plane ticket still say coach? New Orleans covers 6½.

Jets at Patriots: Rex Ryan vs. Bill Belichick. Forget that you wouldn’t want to buy cookies from either one. Which one would you bet on in a game of Stratego? (Kids, ask your dad.) Patriots cover 3½.

The Anderson meltdown, redux

“Depend on the rabbit’s foot if you will, but remember it didn’t work for the rabbit.” – R.E. Shay

football-moneyLast week (not so great): 9-6 straight up, 5-10 against the line.

Financial overview: 111-38 straight up, 77-69-3 against the line.

Lock of the week: Cecil Newton, scared straight.

“Sack Schultz” (It’s over!)

LogoGrass_652173a1We have our final cheater! I mean, winner! Michael Murray, a local from Sandy Springs, was our national winner (edging contestants from Ohio and New Hampshire via tiebreaker). He wins the 37-inch HDTV. Greg Fox of Roswell won the Georgia-Georgia Tech tickets last week. For the record, I finished in 108th out of 4,815 entries. In short, I let 107 of you sack me — because I didn’t want to show off.

Last few episodes . . .

Richt demotes strength coach, but is that enough?

Stop whining: NCAA got it right on Cam Newton, Auburn

NCAA Prez defends Auburn and Cam today!!

December 2nd, 2010
8:17 pm

Will the Auburn haters finally give it a rest? Will the AJC retract their goofy Milton McGregor conspiracy stories and apologize to Auburn University? Will USA Today run a front page new story with a massive picture of Cam and apologize for smearing him? Remember last week USA Today had a front page headline and Cam photo that said we AU folks were living in angst.

The NCAA President explained its position on Newton this way:

“In the Cam Newton reinstatement case, there was not sufficient evidence available to establish he had any knowledge of his father’s actions and there was no indication he actually received any impermissible benefit,” the NCAA said. “If a student-athlete does not receive tangible benefits, that is a different situation from a student-athlete or family member who receives cash, housing or other benefits or knowingly competes and is compensated as a professional athlete.”

President Emmert said:

“We recognize that many people are outraged at the notion that a parent or anyone else could “shop around” a student-athlete and there would possibly not be repercussions on the student-athlete’s eligibility.

“I’m committed to further clarifying and strengthening our recruiting and amateurism rules so they promote appropriate behavior by students, parents, coaches and third parties. We will work aggressively with our members to amend our bylaws so that this type of behavior is not a part of intercollegiate athletics.”

The NCAA, in a press release, explained its position under a heading that said: One size does not fit all: Differences between eligibility and investigations.

The release said:

Many in the media and public have drawn comparisons between recent high-profile NCAA decisions while ignoring the important differences among the cases. There is a purposeful distinction between determining student-athlete responsibility through an eligibility decision and university culpability through the infractions process. Universities are accountable for rules violations through the infractions process.

Student-athletes are responsible for rules violations through the eligibility process.
Reinstatement decisions are independent of the NCAA enforcement process and typically are made once the facts of the student-athlete’s involvement are determined. The reinstatement process is likely to conclude prior to the close of an investigation.

“The enforcement staff investigates all types of rules violations,” said Julie Roe Lach, NCAA vice president of enforcement. “Some of these investigations affect student-athlete eligibility and others do not. The investigation does not stop with a student-athlete eligibility issue, but school officials must address it as soon as they are aware of the violations.”

The NCAA looks at each student-athlete eligibility decision based on its merits, because no two are identical. In the Cam Newton reinstatement case, there was not sufficient evidence available to establish he had any knowledge of his father’s actions and there was no indication he actually received any impermissible benefit. If a student-athlete does not receive tangible benefits, that is a different situation from a student-athlete or family member who receives cash, housing or other benefits or knowingly competes and is compensated as a professional athlete.

“As the reinstatement staff reviews eligibility cases, we must review each case based on its own merits and the specific facts,” said Kevin Lennon, NCAA vice president of academic and membership affairs.

“During the decision, we must examine a number of factors, including guidelines established by our membership for what conditions should be applied based on the nature and scope of the violation. We also carefully consider any mitigating factors presented by the university to determine if relief from the guidelines should be provided.”

“While comparisons may be human nature, they should at least be made based on the facts.”

NCAA Prez defends Auburn and Cam today!! Yes it looks like the NCAA decision has run into a hornet’s nest with their decision. Try reading Pat Haden’s comments today about the decision vs what USC was told by the NCAA regarding parents and players. Cam has his temporary pass to play so let the games begin. And let the NCAA and FBI continue to find the truth in this ugly , sordid affair.

The difference in opinion seems to exist between the eligibility vs the reinstatement divisions at the NCAA. How interesting that the NCAA would deign to respond so quickly to the apparent backlash in the sports talk shows and blogs concerning this ugly, sordid affair and the recent NCAA favorable decision.

The NCAA’s investigation of Cam Newton’s recruitment at MSU is not officially over. Nevertheless, the NCAA president clearly believes Cam did not know about the Cecil/Rogers discussions for pay for play. Therefore, as far as AU and Cam are concerned, it is over. If there was evidence to show Cam knew about the $ discussions, then that would change the matter and he would lose his eligibility. But that would mean the NCAA still has substantive leads that need to be followed-up on. The NCAA people are mostly attorneys and professional investigators. If there was anything still out there, I don’t think the NCAA president himself would come out and exonerate Cam.

You have to really be delusional to think they did an incomplete investigation and left some major stones unturned. I think the whole agent selling player aspect and the MSU boosters still has some interest to the NCAA, as well as the FBI. I think the agent is in real trouble.

Auburn was never under investigation, and the NCAA has stated this. Auburn has the best compliance guy in America – - a former NCAA attorney – - and he needs a pay raise! The whole story was an eligibility story until the media played it up into all kinds of unrelated stories (Cam’s laptop, Cam’s UF grades, Milton McGregor, etc.).

Auburn met with the SEC last summer and cleared Cam before he ever stepped on the field in August. This is what you are not hearing much about. AU knew about the Rogers stuff in July, but I don’t think they had detailed information. AU learned more after the NCAA made Cecil turn over his bank account info. and church financial records, and pretty much forced Cecil to come clean and admit what he and Rogers were up to at MSU.

Indeed, Mr. Schultz!! Cam Newton IS a rock star, and Lord knows… without rock stars, who would ROCK us when we need it?

But this kid (like most of our kids) is neither as wholesome as we wish to believe, nor as dirty as we’ll never admit to being at least once in our own youth. He’s still merely on the threshhold of manhood, learning to be the man he’s going to be. Will he follow the ways of his father? Or are there assistant coaches, trainers, or a teacher somewhere we’ll never know about who inspired his faith in himself?

And what will he learn from the haters who bombarded him these last weeks? My sources down there tell me he’s GREAT with the children with whom he volunteers, and just adores them. Big picture: How we treat young people matters more than where our favorite team lands in the rankings from one year to the next. Yeah, the people who hear a duck, see it walk like a duck, and subsequently call it a duck are the delusional ones. Please, we are not so stupid and naive to believe anything that comes of the Newton family’s mouths (the SEC). I think the real problem that Auburn will have with Cam is that he likes the attention too much so next year, after he signs his big NFL contract (no doubts there, the kid is good at football), he will probably start talking and bragging about how he got away with it all at Auburn to anyone who will listen. They keep him away from reporters now because they can, but next year, ah next year, he can do whatever he wants with NO consequences to himself or his family……I mean his real family not the Auburn “family” who I am sure mean just as much to him as Florida did (where he left his heart). Oh, and I am a Vanderbilt alum so before you accuse me of being either UGA or Bama (or having one tooth, a mullet, or living in a trailer) just know that I didn’t go to either school nor do I live in a trailer……(that baby went back months ago, now it’s just me and the kids living in a van down by the sewage plant……river property is way to expensive now).

The stories out of Florida about him hurt his reputation big time. It wasn’t just the computer- it was the cheating and breaking the honor code- then leaving before he would have gone before the student council. Plus the 13 traffic/parking violations. That says “rules don’t apply to me” like nothing else I would say. You disagree?

I’m not quite sure why everyone who has a problem with the Cam Newton decision must be labeled a Dawg fan or a Bama fan. . . Did the pres of the NCAA come out and speak just because the Georgia and Alabama people thought the ruling was bogus?

I honestly think a few of the Auburn posts are from trolls who just want to stir up trouble, but come on. .

One person below said something about Bammers will always own Barners. Please. South Carolina has a chance, as any team does in a football game, but Auburn should (and most likely will) take this one down. Fairley will frustrate Garcia and he will end up with a few turnovers. No matter what happens with Auburn this season, they become at least a 5 loss team beginning next season. They’ll be ready to can Chizik within 2 years. Auburn is already in trouble on the recruiting front, and just wait until probation hits. It was not “cosmic forces” that gave Auburn the win. It was cosmic funding in play. Money talks and the BCS and SEC have a whole bunch of it. Alabama’s complete control of Auburn was obvious to everyone (NO I AM NOT AN ALABAMA FAN) and I am sure the round table at the convention in January will be an interesting one. My questions for you to answer are these:

1.) At the time what would an Auburn loss have meant to the BCS? Especially before the conference switches they have been able to manufacture take place. TCU-Big East? WTHeck?
2.) How much money would the SEC lose in total bowl appearances if Auburn loses?
3.) How important is it financially (including future coverage dollars) to have a team from your conference in the Title Game?
4.) Is it remotely possible that there are political forces in play in any way? (No brainer there)

Just think on this for one moment and consider the possibility of it being a valid argument. Not that it is, just the possibility it is. This is a very tight fraternity. Remember I have absolutely no bias and Auburn’s athletes do deserve their chance, just like hundreds of other athletes left out of an opportunity every year.

OK, Dawg nation – we get it. Nick Fairley is a cheater, Cam is a scumbag, and Auburn is the worst place on earth. Really – it is getting old. Name calling is an arena reserved for the most mediocre of minds. Now, how about an adult conversation about football – not politics.

USC’s Johnson said that in order for them to be successful in the SEC title game, Steve Spurrier and Marcus Lattimore will have to establish a run game that limits the amount of time Auburn’s defense is on the field. Auburn is running 80 plays a game, and no matter how well conditioned your defense is, they will be winded if Auburn is left on the field. Secondly, Johnson suggested that he won’t let Newton get his yards and points and USC will “shut down Auburn’s other playmakers”.

“You’re not going to stop him,” Johnson said. “You’ve got to slow him down, force some turnovers.

“But if you go in there thinking, ‘I’ll take the other guys away,’ Cam Newton will kill you.”

In my opinion, a USC victory depends on 3 things really:

1. Establish the run game with Lattimore.
2. Take out Auburn’s run game (Cam, Dyer, and McCalebb).
3. Capitalize on turnovers.

Spurrier is a genius and USC will have a completely different plan of attack than they did in the first match up, but unless AU has an off game and Cam is held at both the run and pass attack– USC is not victorious into tomorrow’s game. WDE!

Here is a solution to a big problem. Let’s give college football players 7 years to get a degree, 12 years if they go to the NFL. Fully paid for by the school.

Pay the players a modest salary while they’re in school-$20,000 a year. Do this for all the schools in the BCS conferences.

I hear what you’re saying. But when it comes to enforcement, the Feds get right in bed with the NCAA and neither really enforces much of anything.

Get these major BCS colleges to do the right thing and pay these athletes while they help them progress toward graduation during and after their playing time is over at the school. If the kids drop out or flunk out, well, that happens. But at least compensate them for some of what they gave to the school. Which is a lot.

Never realized just how trashy and pathetic Auburn fans were until this year. I used to have respect for them and considered them a cousin institution. Now that they have shown their true colors, I look forward to watching their demise after their two best hired guns pull a one-and-done at the end of the year and bolt for the NFL before all of Auburn’s dirty dealings hit the fan.

Isn’t it Auburn who has the deep pocketed fan/supporter = Bobby somebody – who would have paid Newton Daddy much more than the $180K he wanted from Mississippi for Cam. He’s paid for talent before. Bet That’s the reason Cam went to Auburn. Wonder if the NCAA checked that out?

Like they asked Evel Knievel after that Caesar’s Palace thing, “Dang, dude, what were you thinking?” And as much as I hate to pull for anything Spurrier [cut to scene me holding nose], I hate Auburn more than usual this year. Therefore, I am constrained to say that the Cocks win in an upset. As far as the rest of your column: (1) What’s an ACC championship? (2) That Jets Patriots game ought to be a good one. (3) Derek Anderson won’t be so full of vinegar when we discovers he’s really not an NFL quarterback (which should be in about 5 weeks). To recap: The Falcons are a lot better when Michael Turner isn’t so fat.

My beloved Tigers held Lattimore to 33 yards the first go around and our defense has only gotten better…especially in the secondary. Auburn is coming into this game as underdog only because it’s personal hatred and wishful thinking from people who want to see Auburn fail. Realistically, Auburn IS the better team and will win at the Dome. Sorry that we are ruining so many lives, those whose very existence is based on the damning of Auburn, but we ARE going all the way. We have not cheated. When we suit up every Saturday and take it 100 yards for seven multiple times, that is not cheating. That’s just called beating your opponent’s a$$. No trickery, no smoke and mirrors, no houdini…just a beatdown.

Hey folks, I am an Alabama alum and have had the great fortune to have personally witnessed my team play in four National Championships. Lost to Notre Dame in 73 Sugar Bowl, won against Penn State in ‘78, beat a formidable Miami in ‘92 and took Texas to task in 2010 BCS in Pasadena. Having relatives and friends who are Auburn alum & fans, I hope they get to experience the thrill and joy I have had in being present when their team does it all – I just hope that it’s done on an honest fair battlefield. Nothing can be more joyous than to see those young men accomplish the pinnacle as long as it is based on honor, character and determination fought from hard work and gut & grit. I will be proud to yell “WAR EAGLE” for my fellow Alabamians & SEC brethren. Don’t let me down , Tigers. RTR!

In reference to that post conference with Derek Anderson:
Jeff, tell your partners in the media when someone says, “what Duece and I talk about is none of anyone’s business” that means, move to another line of questioning. Perhaps, he could’ve asked Derek, “just to clear things up for CARDINAL FANS, can you please clarify what was funny during the time you were CAUGHT ON CAMERA on the World Stage?”

Before you other clowns respond with nonsense, “it doesn’t matter, the reporter was correct”…… again, why was he laughing?

IF I UNDERSTAND THE SEC AND THE NCAA CORRECTLY, THE FOLLOWING IS LEGAL. LET US SAY I HAVE MONEY TO THROW AWAY AND I AM TIRED OF MY COLLEGE,( INSERT NAME HERE) LOOSING 3-5 GAMES EVERY YEAR. I JUST FIND THE TOP PLAYERS IN THE COUNTRY, AND LADLE MONEY ON THE FAMILY OF A HANDFUL OF THEM ( NOT THE STUDENT/ATHLETE). UNTIL THEY CONVINCE THE SON/NEPHEW TO PLAY FOR THEIR NOW NEW FAVORITE SCHOOL WITHOUT MENTIONING MONEY. WHAT HOT QUARTERBACK WOULD REFUSE AN OFFER TO PLAY AT GA. IF THEIR FATHER,MOTHER,UNCLE,AUNT HAD JUST INHERITED A MILLION DOLLAR CONDO AND A MILLION DOLLAR JOB AS MANAGER OF THE HOA. IF YOUR FAMILY MOVES CROSS COUNTRY TO NEW DIGS LIKE THIS, AND YOU HAVE COMPLETED EVERYTHING TO GRADUATE, JUST GIVE THEM THE ADDRESS TO MAIL THE HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA.. WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO STAY IN PODUNK, KANSAS, WHEN YOU CAN MOVE AND KEEP THE FAMILY UNIT TOGETHER. AS LONG AS THE STUDENT NEVER ADMITS THAT HE KNOWS NOOOOOTHING,AND THE WHOLE COUNTRY SWEARS BY HIM,( MAYBE HIS NEW COLLEGE IS THE ONLY ONE SWEARING,BUT WHO IS COUNTING)., THEN EVERYTHING I HAVE SAID IS TRUE AND LEGAL. NOW ALL I HAVE TO DO IS PICK OUT THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE COUNTRY, AND SIC A BOOSTER WITH MONEY ON HIS FAMILY, GO DAWGS!!!!

A day to commemorate

December 4th, 2010
1:26 pm

Attention, everyone, especially dawgtards. Today is the second anniversary of Saint Jan Kemp’s death. To commemorate her life, we will now observe a moment of silence in memory of Saint Jan, who exposed the shameful practices at UGA that were initiated and carried out by slimeball Vince Dooley. Dooley’s image as a coach and a nice guy were forever shattered during the trial, not to mention the one million dollars that dawgtards had to pay Saint Jan. These practices of recruiting morons and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s happening in Athens now.

And now, the moment of silence…

Auburn will not spank Oregon as horrendously as Bulldogs did unbeatable Hawaii years ago but it will not be pretty. Good to have best QB $$$$ can buy. SEC wins yet another national championship. Oregon offense moves into big league defenses instead of Pop Warner. Points? Forhet em. At least in bunches. Cheaters never prosper? Not true in sports! Look at Auburn and Michael Sick. Just not for long. Auburn sold its soul much like Southern Cal did decades ago. It is not pleasant when Lucifer calls in that marker. Not pleasant at all. STENDEK
