Surprise! Spurrier proves South Carolina can be player in SEC

Steve Spurrier was carried off the field by players after winning at Florida two weeks ago.

Steve Spurrier was carried off the field by players after winning at Florida two weeks ago.

If there’s one thing more surprising than Auburn’s meteoric ascent this season under a coach, Gene Chizik, who mostly was lampooned when he was hired, it’s this: South Carolina is in the SEC championship game.

When Steve Spurrier was hired by the Gamecocks, most figured he had a low ceiling for success. The doubt had nothing to do with Spurrier, who had proven to be nothing short of a terrific college coach, despite his failures in the NFL with the Washington Redskins. It was more about his ability to recruit enough talent to Columbia and win the SEC Division, which meant finishing ahead of traditional powers Georgia, Florida and Tennessee.

So here’s the question: Is what happened this year an aberration?

The Gamecocks are a pretty good team with a few players — particularly running back Marcus Lattimore and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery — who could start for any team in the country. But they obviously benefited this season from Georgia, Florida and Tennessee having down seasons.

Still, doesn’t almost every team win a division or a conference at least in part because an opponent took a step back?

ESPN’s SEC blogger, Chris Low, has posted a good column on this subject. He offers his own mea culpa for believing South Carolina would never play for the SEC title and believes Spurrier has cemented his legacy.

Personally, I think Spurrier’s legacy already was cemented. This just enhances it.

OK, try to get past your lingering disdain for Spurrier from Florida days for just a moment.

I’m guessing many of you believe Spurrier will have to do this again to prove South Carolina’s legitimacy as an SEC contender. But the Gamecocks this season have defeated Georgia, Alabama and Florida in the SEC, and last week annihilated Clemson.

Back in September, they also led Auburn in the fourth quarter before losing 35-27. Nobody should consider this rematch a gimme for the Tigers. And now that Spurrier has accomplished this once, nobody should assume South Carolina will be an annual afterthought in the SEC East.

To the Georgia Tech Frat-Boys who sat right behind me at the game Saturday night,

First, you looked kind of cute in your yellow pants, sweater vests and bowties. I guarantee you all the UGA ladies were wishing they could cross over to the dark side just to have a single date with you.

But you showed a lot of class this night. You are VERY lucky you were not punched in the face when you would scream “To Hell with Georgia” and boo each and every player being announced for Senior Night.

Your whiskey laced breathe and non-stop ramblings were exactly what you seem to ridicule UGA fans at Sanford Stadium for doing. So thanks for proving that you are in NO WAY better than any other student/fan/alum who also tailgates all day for a night game against a hated rival. For a second, you and your Tech bretheren had me believing you were sainthood, good christian fans.

You guys disappeared in the 3rd Quarter, after Justin Houston picked up the ball from your battered running back who just got LIT-UP by Akeem Dent. I havent witnessed a vanishing like that since Randy Shannon after an embarrassing loss to Central Florida. I hope you boys made it home safe.

And my final message to you is simple………

Spirrier has always had a sense of humor. that’s why Urban is having problems. Can’t laugh at himself. He’s cut down on his gator club appearances, radio call in shows, ( sends an assistant), .Really not a fan friendly guy. It’s o.k. at 13 & 1,but wears on people at 7 & 5 or7 &6.Little humility might help him because his coaching and coaching staff did their worst job ever.

Spurrier was lucky because everyone else had a down year. They lost 3 games and still won the East. That doesn’t happen often. He was lucky once, not going to happen again. It will be a long time before TN, GA, and FL all have off years. He’ll be long gone.

If you take Lattimore off that team, they are not near as good! If it’s left up to Garcia, he will throw it to the other team when put under pressure. Lattimore is there and he is the difference maker! He is the real deal and THAT will be what makes USC a contender for the East for the next few years. Don’t believe me, look at the Auburn, Kentucky games and then look what he did to Alabama and UGA. He’s a monster and I think Spurrier is the one who lost Auburn and Kentucky games. He is a good coach who overcoaches sometimes. Go Dawgs!!!

Just a lucky year.

Spurrier’s never won more than 7 games at South Carolina.

He’s not good anymore.

Just had a lucky year where the ball bounced his way.

Whenn he finishes in the top 10 4 times in a row at SC, like Richt did at Georgia, we’ll let him into the “good” category.

Spurrier blew the Auburn game by benching Garcia and going with Shaw. Coach lost that one. He almost always ends the seaosn at South Carolina on a 3 or 4 loss run, I think this year’s his only exception.

He’s never even had 2 seasons where he didn’t finish in the top 10 at least one of those seasons until this year, going all the way back to 1985, 18 top 10 finishes by Richt, it’s one of the greatest runs in all of college football.

No one is taking this game forgranted. Spurrier is preparing and motivating his team for what could well be the greatest night of their young lives (so far.) Garcia is no Cam, but he’s a talented QB, and talent + intense training + motivation = has a shot in Saturday’s game.

it takes a little luck anytime to win the east, and good timing.
what if stafford, moreno, green and momass were on UGA’s offense this year? the east would be Georgia’s. but they were here when tebow and harvin were around. just the way it goes sometimes. having lattimore and alshon with experienced garcia this season worked perfect. give them credit. if they had this team in 07 or 08, they would have finished 2nd or third. it takes a little luck no matter who wins it.

Stephen Garcia banged up

South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia landed hard on his left shoulder Saturday in the 29-7 win over Clemson and was in a sling Monday.

The Gamecocks don’t have a normal practice on Monday, but when they return to the practice field Tuesday, Garcia will be limited. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier fully expects Garcia to play in the SEC championship game, but doesn’t want to rush him back to practice too quickly this week. Garcia also injured the thumb on his throwing hand when he hit it against a helmet in the Clemson game.

Congrats to South Carolina, but UGA, UT and UF will be back in a big way in the near future. Dooley may well have UT ahead of schedule, and UGA will be much better next year. UF is an offensive coordinator away from being competitive again. Spurrier will eventually go back to his home in Crescent Beach, FL and hook up with his long time Gator pals. Carolina has some exceptional players at this time, and they will need a coach who can keep it going. The Carolina fans deserve this year’s team success, but it may be much tougher for them in the East next year.

Spurrier single-handedly changed the look of the SEC by coming in and dominating the conference like it never has been done for a decade — even more than the Bear for a given decade. His offense changed the conference from the days of Pat Dye types who ran three downs and then praved for the defense to do something to change the game.

Spurs does more with less than any coach in the conference. He won at Duke — in football; that makes him a legend and all the UF and USC stuff is just icing on a cake of excellence.

Jeff,

“But they obviously benefited this season from Georgia, Florida and Tennessee having down seasons.”

Lets face it…Florida and UGA both had the worst teams they have had in 10 years. TN has the worst talent they have had in about 20 years and South Carolina had the most talent they have ever had and they barely won the SEC East. USC also benefitted from a very generous home schedule and beat UGA without AJ Green…

The stars aligned for South Carolina this year. In another year or two, they will return to mediocrity. They don’t have the facilities or tradition to match up with Florida, UGA, or Tennessee on a regular basis just like Ole Miss. Ole Miss and Arkansas will have a good year every now and then, but will never seriously challenge LSU, Alabma, or Auburn.

You are are so last Month. Didn’t you get the MEMO. When Auburn’s Big Bad FAIRLEY hurt the UGA QB all Dawgs forgave Spurrier and they now FULLY BACK HIM. UGA has to have another team take down those Dirty Boys at AUBURN.
Mickey don’t count the years at FSU. Richt wasn’t the head coach.
The SEC east is so bad it isn’t even funny, but all the teams that are down still say the SEC is the Best in the country. Take Ole Miss & MSU out of the west, add Flordia & UT to the west, and then the SEC east would be fun to watch. The bottom feeders could all fight for a chance to really play in the SEC. The winner of the East would get to be a member or the REAL SEC the next yr. and the biggest loser in the West would have to be in the SEC least for a year.

Boca Baby

Since the creation of the the twelve team SEC no teams other than UF, TN and UGA have won the East, until this year. And this year must be considered for what it is. All three of these schools are down this year. While SC is a better team this year, in a normal SEC East year, even the performance by the Gamecocks would have fallen woefully short. They lost a close one at Auburn early in the season (before Auburn started hitting their stride), gave one away in Lexington and got their rear ends handed to them by Arkansas at home. They are 5-3 in the conference. This normally equates to a second or third place finish in the division. For Carolina to consider this year anything other than the aberration that it is would be a leap at best. The bottom line is that the field has come back to them. Only a fool would believe that the normally top three in the East will remain in the realm of mediocrity. This is a place normally reserved for the Carolinas of the world.

Those are the facts. Spurrier has been good for the SEC, Florida and South Carolina ,in that order. We are lucky to watch an all time great this Saturday.SC will be good again next year. Stop with the Spurrier lovefest already.

Lou Holtz nearly took them to the top and probably would have if the entire SEC been mired in horrible seasons while South Carolina was peaking.

No one believed that SC couldn’t win occasionally. Most people didn’t think they could do it over a long period. Spurrier has done nothing to disprove that line of thinking.

Spurrier is a great coach. One of the best around. But anointing him for a 3-loss season when Mark Richt got annihilated for one a couple of years back is PATHETIC journalism. Yes, his recruits are a little better, but that’s more about depth than about the starters. Certinaly not enough to make Spurrier a god-send and Richt a throw-away as the AJC keeps trying to push.

I like Coach Richt but 2 SEC titles in 10 years comes up short against Spurrier’s 6 in 12 years.
Besides, go back to 1990 when he took over at Florida. The SEC was average, and after a few years of getting embarrassed by Gator teams, the SEC schools decided to man up and go hire better coaches.
So I have to give Coach Spurrier credit for starting the SEC’s meteoric rise to the top back in the 90’s.

SCAR will not have home field advantage as they did first go around and was only able to beat Bama because they were at home. Auburn has proven we are as equally effective on the road with 12-0! Won six SEC championships (1991, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2000).
Named SEC Coach of the Year five times (1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996).
Won at least nine games in each of his twelve seasons, one of only three coaches in major college history to do so.

That said, the AP will still recognize your season for what that’s worth.

POAD = Techead = $#!+head

USC has a really good collection of skill players…..lots of perimeter players. Alshon Jeffery and Tori Gurley would be starters for any other team in the country. Ace Sanders would be a good slot receiver for any team running the spread. Marcus Lattimore has been a welcomed addition to the mix, but the real catalyst to the offensive surge has been the development of the offensive line. Spurrier hired Appalachian State’s OL coach in the off season…..he has made a huge impact on Carolina’s success. Now, Garcia isn’t running for his life every play, he can relax and just play QB.

The defense has a stout defensive line and several good skill players in the defensive back 4. Once the defensive staff reduced the number of switches and audible calls, the players could just play without too much thinking involved. Numerous injuries to the linebacking corps is the only thing that kept this unit from being a top notch defensive.

Having said all of that, I still think Scam and the Looters will win the SEC Championship…..and the National Championship.

And the SEC is still a very strong conference.

I don’t have any problems with the Gamecocks. But you can always rely on the Dawgs and Bammers who earlier in the season made snide remarks abouting eating their mascot – chickens. SCAR has earned their way to SEC East and Gamecocks will have a lot of support from UA and UGA to beat Auburn. But by next year, they’ll return to their normal nasty selves and start the mascot bashing all over again – Gamecocks not being spared either.

I have been predicting that USCe would win the East ever since their debacle vs.UCONN last season. I looked at their skill positions then looked over at UGA’s and UF’s roster and it wasn’t even close. I knew this team would be winners when the USCe Baseball team won the NC. I thought that title would rub off on the football team and that’s exactly what insiders within the USCe program have told me.

Unless UGA gets every recruit they are pursuing, look for USCe to repeat as SECEast champs. They just have too many athletes for UGA to compete with next year.

It proves that Spurrier has done more with less than UGA and CMR.

UGA and all it’s much-praised and highly rated recruiting classes have accomplished very little and are undercoached.

CMR will get 1 more year but the result is already inevitable. It only delays the obvious and CMR knows it, we all know it.

Times have changed for the legacy SEC East gluttons known as UGA, TN and FL. Recruiting, playing with heart and good coaching determines a winner. Our top ranked classes are paying off this year. It takes a few years to build a program and we have arrived. We will be the East beast again next year, but like any SEC team, each year is a continuing process. USCe is no one hit wonder and look forward to seeing all of you fall 2011. The Gamecock Nation will enjoy this weekend, win or lose. The point is: UGA, FL, and TN, we are at the dance, and you’re not!!! GO Gamecocks and make it Orange Crush #2!

Speaking as a Gamecock fan, can honestly say I think we have a shot in this game. Auburn is and should be favored to win. Newton is the real deal, and I didn’t think that prior to our first game with them. Thought he was the equivalent to Corey Jenkins (Gamecock fans know who I’m speaking of). He’s proven any doubters wrong. That being said, something clicked after we got whipped at home against Arkansas. We’ve played our best football the last 3 weeks (outside of the W over Bama). Don’t care who’s having a down year, beating Florida and Clemson on the road to maintain the momentum is something we haven’t seen this team do. Anybody who says this is a one year fluke or we won only because it was a down year in the SEC, we’ll know next year. It’s always been kind of a joke, but Gamecock fans alway say “wait til next year”, usually after a crappy ending to the season. I honestly can’t wait til next year.

You shouldn’t have lost to Alabama or Auburn then. I will give you credit for the 6 game tear you guys have going on right now. But if you handled business in your own division in stead of going 3-2 against the West you would be in the SEC CG.

Granted you did beat USC in its own back yard. And props for that. Don’t give me this whining nonsense. USC didn’t show up for that game. they were looking ahead to Florida. Not sure they could have won if they did show up. Arky is a good team, but it certainly would have been competitive.

South Carolina will be the team to beat next year in the East.
Who is going to be ranked ahead of them pre-season? My Gators have had an entire season to fix the offense and failed. UGA has had an entire season to fix their defense and failed. UT is still a couple of yearsaway from being a serious contender, although they could play the spoiler for someone. UK and Vandy are just, um, UK and Vandy.
Spurrier has put together a solid defense, run game and a respectable passing game. When he doesn’t let his ego get in the way, he can outcoach anyone in the country on a given day. Yes, SC is for real in the East for the next few years.

I really wonder why it takes so long for most people to understand Spurrier is one of the best ever. It is like the press particularly this AJC is constipated when it comes to even recognizing this guy exist. Jimmy Johnson didn’t make Miami he just showed up and took over a successful program. A lot of coaches who find favor with the press are opportunist like Johnson more than great coaches. When Spurrier went to Duke and after he left they were losers on the football field, while he was there they won a ACC championship. He made them a winner. When Spurrier came to Florida they were a cheap win for Vince Dooley, when he left Georgia hated Spurrier worse than General Sherman. He made the cocktail party a hangover for the Dawgs and a all night party for the Gators. Then he goes to USC and for the thick headed which this sport seems to have its full, he is lucky, but for some of us it was only a matter of time. Let him coach either team on the field in a SEC contest he will win. What I to this day cannot understand is is he that good or are the other coaches that bad and overpaid. The old ball coach in his humbleness would have you believe the other schools are just not that good, which is probably right. Since he does what the press seems to think only they are allowed to do and that is call out how sorry a team is, they hate him too. If I were the athletic director at Georgia I would pay Spurrier the 170,000 they will give an consultant and let him tell them what is wrong with this program. Better yet just keep losing to them which they will and listen to the press conference for free, if you listen you will get better.

Well if people took notice you can see he is an elite coach, it took him some time but he has slowly built the program

Our coaches have slowly made the program worse

Spurrier deserves all the positive press he gets. At the end of the day Auburn’s ability to adjust at halftime and superior talent on the OL and DL will be the difference. By the end of the game, so long as they stay healthy, Fairley and others will be harassing Garcia like a horny boss with his hot secretary. Auburn wins a hard fought game, once again coming back from a USC lead in the 4th quarter.

Not to rain on the Spurrier parade, but South Carolina went 5-3 in conference this year, lost to Kentucky, and got beaten pretty bad by Arkansas. Just because everyone else in the East is bad doesn’t make him great. Dangerous, maybe. But not that good. If S. Carolina beats Auburn on Saturday, it will be an upset. It will also be the weakest conference champion we’ve had since a 3-loss LSU team upset Tennessee in ‘01.

The title game format never made much sense to me. If Auburn has a bad game on Saturday, then 6-3 South Carolina will be champs and 8-1 Auburn will be runner-up. Sort of cheapens the regular season.

And if I recall correctly, Spurrier is the same coach who lost 6 games last season, including a decisive loss to a basketball school (UConn) in some minor bowl. Did he all of a sudden rediscover his “genius” this season, or is the rest of the SEC East really that bad? I think it’s the latter.

I’d love to USCe win this game. I think Spurrier cemented his legacy at UF, but if he wins the SECC at USCe then the man is a super genius. They’ve never won anything worth mentioning in football.

Asides why in the heck do gaggers come on to these blogs to discuss non-relevant topics. Leghumpers are the most ignorant and annoying fans in college football……………

With all due respect to USCe, they really just took advantage of a weak SEC East this year. With Florida, Georgia and Tennessee (the traditional powers in the division) down this year, Darth Visor is being hailed as an excellent coach again. But we all know that in any other year a 3-loss team would be lucky to get into the game in Atlanta. I remember thinking the same when the Dawgs made it in 2005 with 2 losses.

the east is down this year, but SC is better than normal SC. better recruits, better talents, better pedigree athletes, better attitude towards improving. that’s why the margin of victory in the Ws are what they are, double digits. They spanked alabama, georgia, clemson, tennessee and florida as if they were all the same team.

young and inconsistent and perhaps not yet used to being winners, there were games they didn’t play all 4 quarters. that has all changed in the past month. SC might not win next year, but they will be a definite contender and I wouldn’t be surprised at all for them to be right there year in and year out.

SC, had they played the same brand of ball the entire season, would be 11-1, the only loss being to Arkansas. That was the one game I look at and figure they couldn’t win that game.

They won ranging from convincingly, to downright dominating the opponent in all the wins. And with big leads in the Auburn and Kentucky games, on the road no less, an experienced team would have finished those off. That is the sign of a talented, young, inconsistent football team…strong wins and stupid losses.

Wow so many comments for such a flimsy content-free blog post. And so many utterly IDIOTIC comments as well. One idiot Georgia fan says: South Carolina wouldn’t be “as good” without Lattimore. Wow, really!! What other profound comments can you share oh football genius? Newsflash: The Partiots might not be as good without Tom Brady either.
Then another IDIOT says that Carolina simply had a “lucky season” because Fla, Ga, and Tenn are all down. Well…1) USC and Georgia always battle tooth and nail and are basically even in talent most years. 2) USC surpassed Tennessee as a power in the East several seasons ago. 3) Florida couldn’t ride Tim Tebow forever! South Carolina has proven that they can beat ANY of those teams, and do it with in-state players like Alshon and Marcus. And finally…Neither Bama nor Auburn are exactly having “down” years and obviously SC played both of those teams quite well. All our studs will be back next year so sorry to tell you but…WE’RE NOT GOING AWAY!

THIS FROM A LONG TIME UGA FAN. IF WE HAD SPURRIER THE LAST 5 YEARS WE WOULD HAVE PLAYED FOR AT LEAST 2 NATIONAL TITLES. AND YOU KNOW WHAT I SAID THAT WHEN SOUTH CAROLINA HIRED HIM. THIS GUY IS THE COMPLETE COACH MAYBE THE BEST EVER IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL. SO CARRY ON YOU CMR FANS. THE REST OF US CAN ONLY DREAM OF WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN.

Hmmm…..to take this whole thing in perspective, let’s gander at the facts. 1. Spurrier’s best team at SC since being in Columbus. 2. UGA, UT and UF’s worst teams since Spurrier has been Columbus. 3. SC went 5-3 in the conference this year. For all intents and purposes, SC backed into the division title. If they do it again next year, then we can talk.

When a sports writer chooses to elaborate on a Team’s coach more than they do the players and their combined talents, I tent to think the team is simply the best of the worst and not worth the ink. SC (to include the abusive old ball coach) is reaping the benefits of an off year in the east, nothing more.

Jeff,

Spurrier cemented his legacy when he won (shared) an ACC title when he was at DUKE!

Nothing he did at Florida or South Carolina will ever compare to that.

And for you Georgia fans who feel that if Mark Richt had Spurrier’s overall South Carolina record at Georgia he would have been fired, you are correct. But Georgia was and should be a better program than South Carolina, that it currrently is not is part of Richt’s problem.

To MATTHEWS DAWG:
If you take Walker off the 1980 national title team, they wouldn’t have been nearly as good, and certainly not national title contenders. That was as ignorant statement, but not shocking coming from the pouty lipped UGA nation who can’t get over the fact they aren’t real contenders anymore. In fact, they haven’t contended on the national stage with any consistency for over 30 years. Further, Ga. Tech has more national titles in football than the overhyped dogs(yes, I spelled it that way on purpose). Get over it, SC has moved ahead of you guys on the importance list and without walker in 1980, the last time you guys bring a national title to town was when they were playing in leather helmets.

No they dont. They just count them differently. If we counted them like they do we have 5 to thier 4.

Get over it, SC has moved ahead of you guys on the importance lis

Not by a long shot. We are 11th all time in the NCAA in Wins and have the third most SEC Championships all time.

We had the 4th best record in the NCAA last decade.

UGA is second fiddle to no one.

Oh Headley,
I will leave you in your state of dementia so that you can enjoy your illusions in peace. But, for a moment of clarity, I point out the following: Titles: That was the official count given by the NCAA that ESPN references. I understand that UGA likes fuzzy math when counting things like titles and wins. It does make taking the hard dose of reality a little easier when you can sit around on the front porch remembering (barely) the few glory days you have of years gone by. Ask yourself when you were even mentioned as a relevant factor in the national title hunt. I know, facts always impede our dreams. Finally, by the way you spell, I see you are a proud graduate of the Athens Agricultural Training Center (A/K/A UGA). Good day Headley, and tell everyone in the Land of Oz that we in the real world say hello.

My Gamecocks have a really good chance of knocking off Auburn on Saturday. The defense is vastly improved and the offense has too many weapons for Auburn to stop.

As for this being a one shot deal for us, don’t count on it. Our team is very young. We lose some guys in the trenches but virtually all our skill positions return. Overall, we will be stronger next year and favored to win the SEC-E again preseason. If we do beat Auburn look for a top 10 finish and an even higher preseason ranking next year.
