Alabama staffer fired for mocking Cam Newton with songs (UPDATED with video evidence)

Here's Cam Newton, not leading the Auburn crowd in "Son of a Preacherman."

Here's Cam Newton, not leading the Auburn crowd in "Son of a Preacher Man."

(Check for video at end)

It turns out that there’s a limit to what’s acceptable when it comes to making fun of Cam Newton — in Tuscaloosa, of all places.

Alabama has fired an employee who mocked the Auburn quarterback with songs he played over the public address system before their game Friday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, according to TideSports.com.

The songs of choice?

“Take the Money and Run” by the Steve Miller Band and “Son of a Preacher Man.” (Reports don’t make clear if it was the Aretha Franklin or Dusty Springfield version of
“Preacher Man.” But I’m guessing it doesn’t matter, even if Aretha is the queen of soul.)

As you no doubt have heard, Newton and his father, the Rev. Cecil Newton, are under NCAA investigation for possibly soliciting payment from one or more potential universities for Newton’s services prior to the player transferring from a Texas community college. Hence, the background music during the pre-game.

Alabama’s part time DJ presumably passed on the Beatles’ “Money,” Pink Floyd’s “Money,” AC/DC’s “Money Talks,” the O’Jays’ “For The Love of Money” and of course Donna Summer’s “[He] Works Hard For The Money.” (Sorry. Just had to go there.)

Seriously though, this from Alabama public relations director Debbie Lane: “Our processes require that all music and videos played in the stadium prior to and during every game be carefully scripted and approved by a senior administrator in the Athletics Department. The former staff member deviated from the script that had been approved for the game with Auburn, and the University took steps to immediately terminate his contract.”

Alas, there is civility in perhaps college football’s most vicious rivalry.

Is the firing just or is it overreaction?

(Here’s pre-game video, via YouTube. Fast forward to about the 9:35 mark to hear the two songs over the PA. Thanks for tip from Tweeter @JaxStateFan)

Auburn is a cesspool. They are a filthy program, even dirtier than the rest of the SEC. So what. I say kudos to Bama for mocking these lowlifes.

We don’t pick our parents. How is it okay to publicly mock a student for what his parents do? It’s not Cam’s fault that his Dad is a slimy preacher! He’s a KID who wants to play football and put his life on a meaningful track, so he doesn’t have to end up shammi–, I mean, er, preaching for a living. I appreciate that Alabama’s Athletics Dept showed class on this one! That means a lot.

My friend has a dog. This dog does a backflip every time UGA beats Tech in back to back years.

I asked him what the dog does when Tech beats UGA in back to back years.

He told me he isn't sure, because he has only had the dog for 10 years.

Very few SEC fans like or tolerate Auburn. This was funny and shouldn’t had lead to this. Hum…must be some more coming out soon to this investigation, as slow as it might be. Newton is a weasel with his blowing kisses and laying around on the ground after being tackled.

As an Auburn man I thought it was pretty good. I know Auburn would have done something along those lines too. It’s all part of the game. Have you ever seen one of Aubie’s skits? He does something close to that.

I am AU and attended game but did hear music. We did hear about and thought it a bit crass but who cares! CAm got it done and bammers went home losers so it all worked out. more important things in world than this. Although ot bona fide proof at present this should be lesson to all recruit parents to keep there mouths shut and be happy their kid is obtaining skills necessary to cash in in NFL or CFL. If that doesn’t work you might even earn a diploma and be abel to support yourself.
