Alabama staffer fired for mocking Cam Newton with songs (UPDATED with video evidence)

Here's Cam Newton, not leading the Auburn crowd in "Son of a Preacherman."

Here's Cam Newton, not leading the Auburn crowd in "Son of a Preacher Man."

(Check for video at end)

It turns out that there’s a limit to what’s acceptable when it comes to making fun of Cam Newton — in Tuscaloosa, of all places.

Alabama has fired an employee who mocked the Auburn quarterback with songs he played over the public address system before their game Friday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, according to TideSports.com.

The songs of choice?

“Take the Money and Run” by the Steve Miller Band and “Son of a Preacher Man.” (Reports don’t make clear if it was the Aretha Franklin or Dusty Springfield version of
“Preacher Man.” But I’m guessing it doesn’t matter, even if Aretha is the queen of soul.)

As you no doubt have heard, Newton and his father, the Rev. Cecil Newton, are under NCAA investigation for possibly soliciting payment from one or more potential universities for Newton’s services prior to the player transferring from a Texas community college. Hence, the background music during the pre-game.

Alabama’s part time DJ presumably passed on the Beatles’ “Money,” Pink Floyd’s “Money,” AC/DC’s “Money Talks,” the O’Jays’ “For The Love of Money” and of course Donna Summer’s “[He] Works Hard For The Money.” (Sorry. Just had to go there.)

Seriously though, this from Alabama public relations director Debbie Lane: “Our processes require that all music and videos played in the stadium prior to and during every game be carefully scripted and approved by a senior administrator in the Athletics Department. The former staff member deviated from the script that had been approved for the game with Auburn, and the University took steps to immediately terminate his contract.”

Alas, there is civility in perhaps college football’s most vicious rivalry.

Is the firing just or is it overreaction?

(Here’s pre-game video, via YouTube. Fast forward to about the 9:35 mark to hear the two songs over the PA. Thanks for tip from Tweeter @JaxStateFan)

We don’t pick our parents. How is it okay to publicly mock a student for what his parents do? It’s not Cam’s fault that his Dad is a slimy preacher! He’s a KID who wants to play football and put his life on a meaningful track, so he doesn’t have to end up shammi–, I mean, er, preaching for a living. I appreciate that Alabama’s Athletics Dept showed class on this one! That means a lot.

I am no Auburn football fan, but in my life I have never encountered anyone from Auburn who acted with anything but class and respect. I wish I could say the same for some of my fellow Alabama grads.

Glad the guy was fired. And I just don’t get the hostility – Auburn is no worse than GA, Al, FL or others. Nothing proven wrong yet – get over yourselves, accept that they are better this year (the Tide will swing the other way soon enough) and get back to enjoying SEC football – the best in the country! DawginOH. You must not be a big UGA fan. AU and UGA both adopted the songs all the way back to the 1892’s. If you think about it, not that far from the civil war, so it was popular. AU and UGA had different words, but no different than AU and Clemson having some songs that are similar. Somehow, some UGA fans seem to think it originated as UGA’ fight song, but that simply isn’t the case. Don’t believe me? Google it!

This isn’t about class, it’s about disobedience. The music has to go through an approval process. This time it was only mocking the allegations against Cam Newton’s father but it very well could have been songs that were sexist or racist in nature. The university doesn’t want to take chances on the poor decision making ability of the person running the sound system so they have the entire playlist pre-approved. The staffer decided to ignore his bosses and the university to make what he or she thought was a funny joke.

What if an Alabama player had been arrested and the sound guy played NWA’s “F**k the Police”? Some would find it funny but it would be an embarrassment for the university. Just because you’re put in charge of playing music doesn’t always mean you get to choose the tunes.

That said, if the employee violated procedure for song selection then I don’t have any major problem with them terminating him either.

Someone above mentioned Cam not getting up quickly after getting tackled in the GA and AL games. Several GA fans (co-workers) have seen this and mentioned to me that Cam must be tired. Here is why: during the LSU game, some Bengal Tiger players apparently stepped on Cam’s hand(s) on purpose several times when he was getting up from the pile. Auburn coaches have instructed Cam to protect his hands (under his body) and wait until everyone else is up before getting up off the ground.

LSU players are apparently just as dirty as the UGA offensive line that tried (3x) to chop block Nick Fairley.

Integrity?

November 29th, 2010
10:08 pm

Regardless of how you view Cam Newton….pay for play, receiving stolen property, destruction of stolen property, my biggest issue is the fact that he was caught cheating at least twice at UF (possibly a third time) and refuses (arrogantly) to address this publicly. He was facing expulsion at UF but transferred due to lack of “playing time”. Reminds me of my days at U of A, when then superstar Todd Day was caught cheating on a bio quiz. He was suspended by the U for 15 games or so but ended up signing a multi million dollar contract. At least the U of A showed some (albeit not enough) integrity on the issue. Auburn just stands right behind this guy. Speaks volumes about the character and integrity of Auburn…..

Why do the retards at Auburn have 2 mascots? I hear “war eagle” and “go tigers”. I guess it depends on how drunk the person is, or whether their parents met at a family reunion. As far as the Scam Newton issue, Auburn is not doing anything that 119 other schools are not doing. College football is a business, motivated by money. Degrees are not important anymore, as long as $ is being made.

One more comment for the Dawg fan that said Auburn “got a water hose out and sprayed fans.” I was there. The stadium PA system was used to warn fans to stay off the field. Several UGA fans doing what they do best, which is get drunk and damage private property, ignored the warnings and ran onto the field anyway. Auburn turned on the in-ground sprinkler system. It also strains credulity to believe that Cam’s father was wheeling and dealing without Cam’s knowledge if he indeed was. That would be the ultimate betrayal and from Cam’s demeanor ever since the story broke he sure doesn’t carry himself like a kid who knows his father betrayed him now does he?

Contrast that with Albert Means whose high school coach sold him to a booster. Means regarded his coach as his father figure due to Means not having a father around. When he learned of the betrayal he became depressed and withdrawn, left Bama immediately and transferred. A year later he was out of football completely. The whole thing just broke the young man. Now does Cam Newton carry himself in a fashion indicative of a young man who was just allegedly sold out by his father? I think not.

Auburn has one mascot: The tiger

Auburn also has a battle cry: “War Eagle” An eagle represents that battle cry but that eagle is not the mascot. There’s a legend about the battle cry and if you have the ability to use Google, look it up.

Auburn players also have the nickname “The Plainsmen” based on the title given to Auburn years ago of being “The Loveliest Village on the Plains.”

So, it’s not about being *retarded.*

It’s about time-honored traditions held dear for an institution that’s been around since the mid-1800’s.

So……… Can’t figure out whether to say “Go Tigers” or “War Eagle?”

Then say neither.

To Ben….don’t let the tradition / mascot argument get you down. Auburn has been fighting that fight for years. Hind Tit: Auburn knew a great deal about this mess in July, and so did the SEC. Auburn’s compliance man (a former NCAA attorney) cleared Cam with the SEC before he ever played a down. As far as this story goes for Cam, it is over. He has been cleared by the NCAA, as they do not have proof (and apparently do not believe) Cam knew about his dad’s money discussions with the MSU boosters.

MSU is in trouble with the NCAA for reasons related to the three boosters. Although MSU is to be commended for referring the story to the SEC, they have inadvertently disclosed a network of boosters doing things that are going to result in some sort of NCAA sanctions. This is probably why MSU was very late in providing the updated information to the SEC – -they realized (too late), that they are in trouble for this network of boosters that are talking with recruits and dealing with agents.

Auburn’s biggest trouble is not Cam’s dad – - it is finding a way to beat USC again, an excellent football team. We have to go 9-0 in the SEC and defeat Spurrier twice to win the SEC. All USC has to do is go 6-3 and split with us to win the SEC. Not fair, but that is life.

Cam was not “cleared” by the NCAA as you state. The NCAA has not had time to thoroughly investigate the whole matter. If you take a look at past investigations they usually take a year minimally and often a few years- sheesh the Reggie Bush thing dragged on for several years. As for the FBI getting involved I’ve never seen an investigation involving the FBI that didn’t result in serious penalties. Do you really think the FBI gets involved if its something very minor? They’ve got better things to do and if they’re going to get involved you better believe there’s a possiblility of something very, very wrong going on.

And you also know that they will go after whichever team wins. If Auburn were 5-7 right now, this would not be an issue and nobody would care where Cam came from or what he did. If somebody does well, then they MUST be guilty of something, right?

Then from the moment Dye got to AU he was landing all the big recruiting classes- Bo, Brent Fullwood, Tracy Rocker out of Georgia’s backyard, I always used to wonder how a program that was so downtrodden all of a sudden was dominating the recruiting against its 2 huge rivals who were in the midst of national title contention every year. The pay for play scheme since the Dye days almost came to light several times over the years but got hushed up. The more and more you think about it the easier it is to believe that the pay for play has been going on since the Dye era as alleged.

I’ve no disagreement with your first paragraph.

As for judging Cam that’s not my job but we all make little judgments left and right in everyday life about people. For example you’ve already judged him as being a righteous kid “just trying to make something of himself”. About what you base this I have no freaking idea. I guess being a great player makes him a good person also. That’s logical to you apparently.

I’m just telling you that I have a hard time respecting someone who knowingly receives stolen property. Call it morals I guess.

And I worked hard to get through college. Maybe you respect people that cheat their way through college. Sorry dude but I don’t. I didn’t buy pre written term papers off the internet. I actually did the work and wrote them myself. And Cam doesn’t even try to refute the various charges of academic fraud. Or perhaps you didn’t even notice that in your rush to judge him as such a good guy for the reason that he plays football really well. You go on thinking what you want to think about a guy being such a great character guy cause he’s a good football player. And I’ll just go on thinking that receving stolen property and being on the verge of 3 instances of academic fraud in one year means a person probably doesn’t have the highest of character.

I see something here other than humor or for that matter insults. They will not tell the persons name who done this. That leads to three possibilities. Firstly, no actual action was taken. Secondly, they fear for his safety, Lastly, privacy. I think it couldn’t be no action that can proven easily. Privacy concerning SEC is an oxymoron. Mr. Newton’s
grades at Florida prove that. This being an issue of Federal Law which even trumps the NCAA. This leaves only safety. In Alabama after the Iron Bowl we have been known to have domestic killings concerning this game. So I for myself think humor concerning SEC football could be deadly. But like the old story goes. Southern schools are only football stadiums with universities attached.

And, WHY ON EARTH would the NCAA, FBI, ESPN, NYT, TMZ, FOX Sports, etc, etc get involved if THERE WAS NOTHING? There is alot more going on here than we “blog” posters know about. Now, in full disclosure, I’ll start by saying I’m an Auburn fan.

But yes, absolutely, this guy should have been fired. This kind of thing is funny (Gucci Mane – Makin’ Love to the Money, is my suggestion) for us, on message boards, where this kind of cheekiness and amateurism is the norm. But come on, even in the sake of rivalry, if you are a Bama fan you have to be embarrassed that this was played over the loud speakers.

This guy’s job is to operate the loud speaker (probably among other things). As we all know by now, college football is big business. If this guy worked for any company in the private sector, he would have been canned the instant it happened. It’s one thing if a random student sneaks in and does this, it’s another if a paid professional defies courtesy and projects a horrible image of his employer, the UA athletic department.

People are focusing on the wrong things here. I won’t even debate whether or not he’s actually guilty of the charges, that’s been rehashed a million different times and won’t be settled until the NCAA says it is. But for a public university to intentionally mock and try to embarrass an athlete on gameday is unreal. Luckily for Alabama, them firing this guy shows that when it comes to putting on a competitive atmosphere, they won’t let immature slandering interfere. Leave that to the fans decked out in colors, not the professionals who’s only charge is to create and promote a fair and fun environment to watch football.

If Auburn had done something similar to an opposing player, I promise you I would be embarrassed.

First of all, you are confusing Malzahn (our OC) with Chizik (our HC). I could stop there because you clearly know nothing about the Auburn program.

Iowa State is historically one of the worst programs in the country, definitely the Big 12. Fact is though, he built them up and Paul Rhodes (another former Auburn DC) took over and begins winning. I can’t look in a crystal ball and say what would have happened if Chizik stayed at ISU, but it isn’t going too far out on the limb to say he left the cupboard fuller than when he arrived.

Georgia Tech, with the Yellowjackets and the Ramblin’ Wreck, the real Model T Ford that drives in parades and onto the football field?

Alabama’s the Crimson Tide, yet their mascot is an elephant?

Tennessee is the Volunteers, yet they bring out a Blue Tick Hound?

Harvard is both the Crimson and the Johns.

Yale is the Bulldogs and the Eli.

Stanford is the Cardinal and a tree?

Western Kentucky is the Hilltoppers, yet the mascot is a big red muppet?

University of Miami is the Hurricanes, yet the mascot is Sebastian the Ibis?

There are more examples……..I cannot understand why Auburn is singled out in this way when almost every University has similar mascots/names.

We may lose Cam next year to the NFL, but guess who else is graduating or NFL eligible? Julio, Ingram, Richardson, Dareus, AJ Green. Seems that neither Bama or Puppies will have THEIR star players needed in order to win games either. If Bama couldn’t repeat a National Title with their Heisman (let alone an SEC TITLE), how are they going to pull it off NEXT year!

Reported by Jim Galloway – Political section of AJC:

The editor-in-chief of the University of Georgia’s campus newspaper has resigned after being ejected from the president’s box – and a visit with Gov.-elect Nathan Deal and Gov. Sonny Perdue — during Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech.

Alcohol was said to be involved. Neither Perdue nor Deal are drinkers.

In an article posted in The Red and Black, the daily newspaper, editor Daniel Burnett said he had been at a tailgate party before his visit to the prestigious booth of UGA President Michael Adams:

“It’s my understanding his behavior was disruptive enough to the point he was asked to leave,” said Meg Amstutz, executive assistant to the president.

Burnett told The Red & Black he responded, “Yeah, that’s fine,” before walking out of the box without further confrontation.

“I think someone smelled the vodka,” Burnett said Monday. “I was talking to people, I don’t believe I was being disruptive. But they have the right to escort anybody out. I don’t have a problem with that.”

That’s the problem with thUGA! It’s always someones else’s fault and they take the low road of “No!! It wasn’t me!” kharma is a beyotch, ain’t it you leg humpers!!

How does an unemployed college student whose mother and father were divorced when he was a child, his family home is in the hood surrounded by violence and drugs (Julio’s words – not the media), and his mother worked two jobs – one in a restaurant to keep Julio straight because his younger brother had already mucked up – and YET?!!! Here he is throwing money and driving $60K SUV’s….spill it! Which Booster paid for this? We already know about last year’s fishing trip Julio and Ingram were the beneficiaries of from a total stranger at the beach whose father has kids enrolled in AU and Florida, with no affiliation to Alabama. Whatever happened to the concept of being innocent until proven guilty? If “your” quarterback at (enter your SEC school team here) was accused of anything, you’d adamently defend him, even though you have no knowledge of the situation. Why is it different here? Because it’s not “your” quarterback. UGA alone has what.. 8, 10, 13 arrests in the past year? I’d say that’s definitely closer to GUILTY than baseless allegations that still haven’t been shown to contain a shred of proof.

Every single SEC school would love to have a quarterback the caliber of Cam Newton, but since they don’t, and since we beat every one of ‘em, they have to show a complete lack of respect (and in UGA and UA’s case, lack of class, but what’s new?) for a twenty-one year old kid that is living “the dream.” Keep up the comments. Each one just makes me hold my head up higher.

I believe in Auburn and love it. Never thought Alabama fans had class (what can you expect from sidewalk alumni?), so I won’t even expect it from them. I grew up a UGA fan and have always pulled for them, but the past few weeks has showed me what happens when ignorant people are allowed to breed. I don’t see much talent in the ACC (compared to the SEC) but.. Go Jackets!

At the end of the day: Cam (01), UGA (00). Cam (01), Alabama (00). Need I go on? No. Enjoy the Papa Johns Bowl. I’ll wave from Glendale, wearing my number two jersey.

Here are quotes from your coach after you lost to TALENTED JACKSONVILLE. Sorry, I did say talented didn’t I. ………………….LOL

Barbee was especially frank about the Tigers’ lack of play-makers Saturday, saying the Dolphins of the Atlantic Sun are “obviously more athletic, quicker and faster” than Auburn.

That, obviously, shouldn’t be the case for an SEC team.

You lose to teams that could not even play in the SEC on a consistent basis.

UGA = 11-10 in their last 21 games –they are the poster child for mediocrity, wishing they were on par with Auburn, Alabama, LSU, Florida …even South Carolina or Arkansas. You know times are bad in dawggie nation when the only thing pup fans have to cheer about over the last two seasons is beating Tech ..you know, the game that isn't as important as say, Auburn or Florida. Actually it's funny and pathetic at the same time.

Enjoy your little in-state win ..and yes, your D got torched all night long, too bad Tech fumbled twice in the red zone, as Tech certainly outplayed Georgia, but that's football.

Here's a dose of reality for you; Georgia Tech has won the last conference championship between the two schools and has been to the last BCS bowl game between the two …and odds are that Tech will win another conference championship and earn a BCS bowl bid before UGA does. The ACC is not as strong as the SEC, but who cares. UGA is a mediocre second-tier team in the SEC, and GT can turn it around in a year, enough to compete for an ACC championship.

Glory Glory to Ol' Georgie indeed.

UGA Class of '89 …there's a reason I'm a UGA grad but despise the schools athletics programs with a passion, their idiot fans and their lost ideals on what's truly important in college athletics.

FBI had the absolute best seats in the house for the Alabama/AU game. I have heard that they are very impressed with things at AU, just not with AU football.

AU won the mythical NC in 1957 and then saw it stripped from them for cheating. This legacy is the AU legacy. The entire world knows that AU has been terrible and all of a sudden, with some kid that has a very checkered past , as well as one or two others on that squad ……………… AU can win the NC? By the way, Oregon is one of the dirtiest football prgrams around and the TV jocks will be running all kinds of coverage on that game, if it takes place.

AU will be stripped of any titles, including the SEC. Time will prove this out.

From what I understand, this move was as much in Alabama’s interest as anyone else’s. Apparently a number of high profile tide recruits were on hand when these songs were being played, and several of them found the move to be tasteless and offensive. From what I understand, a few recruits even left the game because they thought “Son of a Preacher Man” was racist (personally, i don’t see how race factors in here, this is just what I have been told by people i know who were present). Assuming that there is any truth to this information, then firing the person responsible is probably more an effort to save face with their own recruits than to apologize to Newton (which, notably, the press release never attempts to do).

NCAA rolls Crimson Tide for violations
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The NCAA placed Alabama on five years’ probation Friday, jolting the program Bear Bryant built into a power with a two-year bowl ban and heavy scholarship reductions.

The governing body said it considered giving the Crimson Tide the most severe punishment — the death penalty — under the repeat violator rules for a recruiting scandal in which boosters were accused of paying money for high school players.

“They were absolutely staring down the barrel of a gun,” said Thomas Yeager, chairman of the infractions committee.

“These violations are some of the worst, most serious that have ever occurred,” he said.

The university, accused of 11 major violations — one was later withdrawn — and five minor charges under two former coaches, said it would appeal

Innocent until proven guilty? AL #1 preseason; AU #1 now. Disrespectful and unsportsmanlike. I don’t remember any other such activity when people like Reggie Bush were accused. AU seems to have been put into the Rodney Dangerfield of college football. Let it go until/if Newton is found guilty of anything by the NCAA.

I see political correctness at play here…..and I think the offender got what he had coming as he violated his own university’s rules. Like it or not, this athelete Cam Newton and his father have not been convicted of anything, only rumored to be such. When you play a game like this, you have to pay the piper…..I respect Alabama for taking the high road in this.

I think this was in good fun, and if constant media attacks over the past 2 months haven’t phased Cam, neither will a couple of songs played in Jordan-Hare West. Obviously someone (probably not Cam Newton) made a big enough stink for Bammer to start firing people, but I don’t think Cam would even care at this point. He’s going to be a millionaire in a couple of years and all of this will just be a humorous footnote.

Report: Iron Bowl songs targeting AU’s Newton were approved by UA staff

Posted: Dec 01, 2010 11:27 AM CST Updated: Dec 01, 2010 11:27 AM CST

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) – The Tuscaloosa News reports that a full-time staffer at the University of Alabama approved the songs that targeted Auburn quarterback during Iron Bowl warm-ups, and that he was not fired like a part-time staffer who played the songs.

The News report Wednesday said Justin Brant, director of Crimson Tide productions, participated in selecting the songs, “Take the Money and Run” and “Son of a Preacher Man.” Newton’s father, a pastor, allegedly sought money during his son’s recruitment by Mississippi State.

The newspaper cited two unnamed sources involved in UA’s investigation of the songs incident, which led to the firing of the part-time staffer. The paper said Brant declined comment.

UA spokeswoman Debbie Lane said earlier the songs undermined UA values. She did not immediately respond to an e-mail for comment Wednesday.
