LIVE BLOG: Hot Falcons get another big test from Packers

Good morning. Need coffee.
I fully expect to see better football and fewer turnovers today than I witnessed last night in Athens. Georgia and Georgia Tech will go to low-tier bowl games — and those are gifts. The Falcons (8-2) and Green Bay (7-3) are two of the NFL’s top teams and could be on track to meet for the NFC title and the Super Bowl berth.
It may take me a few cups of coffee to get me going this morning. I left Athens at 1:45 a.m., got home at 3 a.m., crawled into bed at 3:30 a.m. But I’m in a climate controlled stadium and looking at a 1 p.m. kickoff. So that’s a significant step forward from last night.
OK, about the Falcons. This game is very similar to the Baltimore game two weeks ago. It’s a chance for the Falcons to gauge themselves against one of the league’s elite. Back in early August, I gave you my rankings of the top five NFC teams. Four of the five are still looking pretty good: 1. Green Bay; 2) Atlanta; 3) Dallas (oops); 4) New Orleans; 5) New York. Let’s not talk about No. 3.
The Packers are solid. They rank eighth in scoring and second in points against. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has seven touchdowns and no interceptions in the last two games, although it’s worth noting those numbers came against two imploding teams, Dallas and Minnesota.
Actually, the Packers’ last two wins came against opponents that fired their respective head coaches (Wade Phillips and Brad Childress) the next day.
Going out on a limb here: The Falcons’ Mike Smith is safe.
Here are a few obvious keys today:
♦ Get pressure on Rogers: Defensive end John Abraham is expected to play after sitting out last week’s game in St. Louis with a groin strain. That should help. The Falcons rank only 25th in the NFL with 18 sacks, but Abraham has eight of those. The next closest: Curtis Lofton and Jonathan Babineaux with two each.
♦ Pass protect: I know, also kind of obvious. But the Packers rank among NFL leaders with 29 sacks. The Falcons’ offense’ after some inconsistencies early in the year, has excelled during the current four game winning streak. During that span, quarterback Matt Ryan has thrown for nine touchdowns, one interceptions 1,103 yards.
♦ Turnovers: This qualifies as another “duh” key. But consider this: The Falcons are 7-0 this season when they win the turnover battle and 1-2 when its even or they lose it.
One last thought before I turn it over to you: The Falcons can really set themselves up nicely for the postseason if they win today and next week at Tampa Bay. They would be 10-2 overall, 7-1 in the conference and 3-0 in the NFC South with only four games left (two with Carolina, Seattle and New Orleans). But that’s probably getting a little too far ahead.

I hope you were able to spend some time wuth your child while you were in Athens.
The Sunday shcool was light this morning so we decided not to have class. Too many people up too late. The UGA fans were nice and they didn’t want to talk crap because they knew they were lucky.
On to the Falcons
I hope the Falcons make the Fast start, but don’t go through the 2nd-3rd qtr deceleration. Green Bay can move the ball easily so the D needs to stay focused, but the O has to keep pushing to score.

Mark my words, if the Falcons lose today we’re going to see a Georgia Dome with a lot of empty seats come 27 December. At least that game falls on a Monday. They have to play all 60 minutes and no or few turnovers. Constant pressure on Rogers. I keep thinking of the Philadelphia game and hope we don’t pull one of those – hopefully that kind of game will never show up again we just couldn’t do anything that game – scares me cause I know we have it in us to have a bad day once in awhile just hope it’s not today (or against Tampa and N.O.)

The coaching staff needs to force Jenkins to become a force.. As much of a disappointment he may have been, he’s not receiving opportunities, and Ryan is looked-in to “TE Gonzalez” and “WR White” too much..

I’ll take the win, but our defense has GOT to seal the deal in games like this…can’t keep relying on the offense for the bailout. The only two upsides for me, besides the win, is yet another last-possession clutch drive orchestrated by Ryan & the fact that the running game is alive & well. Really concerned about our lack of pass rush & porous secondary though.

To hell with Philly, GB, TB and NO. You are looking at the best team in the NFL. With a little under a minute left, did ANYONE doubt Matt Ryan? NO, not at all. Say what you want about the defense, but BVG should be defensive coordinator of the year.
This isn’t the same Atlanta team that played Philly 6 weeks ago and now have won 5 straight including wins against GB, Baltimore, and TB. I once doubted this team, but WOW. Ryan is 19-1 at home in his career. 29-12 as a starter. Mike Smith 29-14. Life is good!! If Atlanta beats TB next week, watch out. 2 against Carolina, 1 against Seattle and the finale against NO. Falcons FS Decoud is one the main reasons that Packers QB, Aaron Rodgers did not carve-up the rest of the secondary in the middle of the field.
Decoud, quietly is keeping opposing QBs from going deep.

In no way saying “Super Bowl or Bust” – but this team has indeed established what the Braves over that past 10 seasons and Hawks over the last 5 seasons have not been able to.
They have slipped out of the “real good” or even “DAMN GOOD” category and have achieved “ELITE” status. Again, since there are a handful of teams that are “elite” and only 1 can win it all – this doesn’t automatically mean Super Bowl Here We Come – but we have reached a level of expecation now higher than any other pro sports team in Atlanta since the Braves of the mid to late 90’s – AND DAMN DOES IT FEEL GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Packer QB did! Previous pressure forced rushed QB throws. One on fourth down which just missed for major gain stands out. Falcons should have brought heat to force quick decision. We beat a legitamate team “with no ref help” if anything Green Bay should have been flaged at the end for delay of game….But that doesnt matter. People keep hating on us, thats fine. We will just keep winning and trucking along week by week. NO one can take our record away from us. Lucky or Good, either way were 9-2. Thats the bottom line.

“Truth” mentions that teams who do nothing but throw will rack up passing yards. And then proceeds to call people stupid. Try 411 rushing yards, guy (90 yards more than Tech’s FBS-leading 320 per game). Around 110 or so passing, can’t remember the exact number.

I’m not quite ready to call Matt (Ryan) the greatest QB in Atlanta Falcons history just yet. I need for him to win some play-off games first. But……
In 3 seasons,MR has lead the franchise to three (3) straight winning seasons when before he came the franchise could never put together two (back to back) consecutive winning seasons. Something Bartkowski,(Chris) Miller,(Jeff) George,Chandler,and Vick never accomplished.
MR is 29 -12 (in less than 3 full seasons) thus far as a starting QB. A 70.7 winning percentage. Very impressive!!

So, after 30-plus years of being an ardent Falcons / Atlanta sports fan, despite being geographically displaced for a third of that time . . . Top Falcon QBs:
1) Bartkowski — Not his fault that the Smiths didnt put much around him for most of his time. A pro in every sense of the word
2) Ryan — Three seasons in Hotlanta, three winning seasons. Lets see how things play out this year before we put him at number one, but my guess is that Bart is just keeping that top spot warm for a bit.
3) Hows about Chris Chandler? The only quarterback to lead the Birds to the Super Bowl. Only 14-2 season on record. . . . The guy was more than a Trent Dilfer game manager. He made some throws. We dont beat the Vikes in Minnesota without this guy making some great plays.
4) Mike Vick . . . Fine. Put him here. My beagle – mix is howling in disagreement, but the guy did win a playoff game in Lambau Field. He makes the list of best on-field quarterbacks in Falcons history.

Another “Old Fart” Moment:
You guys are forgetting about “General” Bob Lee – QB in the greatest Falcon win to that point when he beat Fran Tarkenton & the Vikings on MNF in 1973 (finishing them off with a bomb to “Cadillac” Eddie Ray).
That was the first Falcons game I ever went to (age 13) and to this day STILL one of my fondest memories.
P.S. – As chapter president of the Falcon Old Fart Club – I’ve been to every one of their home playoff games – of course there’s only been FOUR over the past 32 years, but I’d say not too many folks have been to all of them (including 1978 – there’s that year again – with Bart firing two 4th quarter TD’s to beat the Eagles 14-13).

I was at that Falcons-Eagles playoff game in ’78. It was so cold, they had to use sledgehammers to break up the ice on the tarp. First Falcon game I ever videotaped, too. Still have it. Musburger, Jimmy the Greek, and Jayne Kennedy did the pre game.

And the biggest miracle wasn’t really the 2 td’s to come back. It was when the Eagles kicker got hurt on a kickoff and as they drove down the field (with 5 foot 7 Rolland Lawrence trying to cover Eagle receivers including 6 foot 8 Harold Carmichael) to win it and their punter had to try like a 32 yard field goal with under a minute and shanked it!!!
That’s the ONLY good thing about having a team with a poor winning history – you can remember the great moments that much more!

I’m serious. Absolutely loved the win. And I figure the Falcons have a very good chance to win all remaining regular season games. But, as a Falcon fan since 1966, I’ve never seen such solid, steady improvement (or any improvement, generally). Give Dimitroff and Smith another draft and maybe another veteran acquisition, and the Falcons are going to be formidable for a long time.
For longtime Falcons fans, this season’s nail-biter games beat the heck out of wondering how close we can keep the game before losing. If Steve Bartkowski had played for a Falcons team owned by Blank, coached by Smith, and managed by Ditrimoff, he’d have SuperBowl rings on most of his fingers.
The last two games have made the Falcons’ strengths and vulnerabilities clear to me. But I’m just a fan who doesn’t claim to know a lot about football. Smith and Dimitroff do know football, and they’ll make the team into the Atlanta Falcons we’ve been waiting for all these years.
(PS: Free Gumbo said earlier that he *almost* peed in his pants. Obviously anyone can turn over a new leaf if he really tries.)

Matt does not have the strongest arm but I am impressed about how much more accurate he is this year than in college. I did not agree with the draft choice when it was made, and going into this year I was a Matt Ryan skeptic. I think he is now a legit top 10 QB and rising.

Today’s Falcons win was a complete TEAM WIN.
Every phase contributed in some way…the Defense stepped up when they had to, the Offense made plays..special teams made plays. Nobody stood out, but I’ll take the blue collar win over a good Green Bay team anytime.

Atl01 . . .. . I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again . . ..Ryan was extremely accurate in college . . . I saw every single game he played. Now of course if you just look at this stats I know those “19″ interceptions stand out as a number. Hey, they are what they are . . .and in the books. “But, . .. . .yes I have a but . . . . .I’d say about 15% of those interceptions were just plain bad passes or bad decisions. I can’t tell you how many times easy passes were missed/tipped by receivers. I know that can be a complaint of many fans of other QBs. Just saying . . . . . .I thought Ryan was extremely accurate . . . and the 19 interceptions could be misleading if you had not seen him every game in College.
