Georgia’s win not art, but we’ve come to expect this

Georgia celebrates after Justin Houston's interception in the final seconds sealed the victory. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

The Dogs celebrated after Justin Houston's interception in final seconds sealed win. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

ATHENS — It was supposed to be easier than this.

But then, so was the Colorado game.

So was the Mississippi State game.

So was . . . well, let’s just assumed “easy” left town with Louisiana-Lafayette 12 weeks ago.

The offensive line hasn’t been the dominating unit that Georgia expected. The defense under Todd Grantham certainly hasn’t improved like expected. (Did Willie Martinez leave just his playbook in Athens or was that his spirit?) The physical and mental edge that the Bulldogs have often lacked over the past three seasons? Still lacking.

This is what Georgia fans get in 2010: a 6-6 record in this season’s deep sea of 6-6 records. The Dogs won 42-34 over Georgia Tech on Saturday. They became bowl eligible, not because they were much better than the Yellow Jackets but because — until a touchdown with 1:29 left — the opposing kicker had missed an extra point.

The teams combined for six turnovers plus a botched opening kickoff return by Georgia. When the Dogs and Jackets accounted for three fumbles in four exchanges, I’m pretty sure every bowl official in attendance stood up and left.

But if you’re a Georgia fan this season, you take it. Why? Because a win at least makes the 6-6 record far more appealing aesthetically than 5-7. Because a bad bowl game is better than no bowl game. Because this season has predominantly lacked beauty from the outset, save the acrobatics of A.J. Green and the surprising play of freshman quarterback Aaron Murray.

In retrospect, it was silly to think that the fact the Dogs were two-touchdown favorites suddenly would propel them to a dominating performance.

“It would’ve been sickening to be 5-7 right now and for the season to be over,” coach Mark Richt said.

Who knew a bottom-tier bowl game in Birmingham or Memphis could look like paradise?

It was nearly three months ago to the day Saturday when Richt looked ahead to this season like a child peering through the window of a toy store. He talked about his offensive line. He talked about veteran leadership. He talked about a turnaround on defense. But when asked for a won-loss projection based on the schedule, he balked.

“I used to do it more than I do now,” he said in August. “What year was it — [Matthew] Stafford’s freshman year [2006]? I kind of did it that year a little bit. We didn’t have a great season. Everything looked different than it was.”

Sort of like this year. There’s no spinning it. The season went sideways, and the Dogs have been wobbling almost from Day 1.

Richt will be back next season, and he should be back because winning two SEC titles in his first five seasons earns him the right to fix the problems. But he has a lot of problems to fix.

Aaron Murray completed 11 of 14 passes with three touchdowns in the first half but didn't throw much in the second half (3 for 6). (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

Aaron Murray completed 11 of 14 passes with three touchdowns in first half but didn't throw much in the second (4 for 5). (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)

He can leave Murray alone. The young quarterback entered this season as the team’s biggest question mark, and he ended it as one of its few strengths. But almost every other area is due for an overhaul.

It wasn’t difficult to tell this was a game between 5-6 and 6-5 teams. The Dogs’ Shaun Chapas dropped the opening kickoff and Tech recovered (technically it’s not a fumble, just early humiliation). But the Jackets failed to score on that possession or the next one, despite starting at the Georgia 27 and 46. Their second drive? It ended with a fumble.

In the end, it wasn’t so much which team had fewer thumbs — we’ll call that one a tie — but which best took advantage. The Jackets’ first three fumbles all led to Georgia touchdowns. The Dogs’ fumbles led to bupkis for Tech.

Murray was phenomenal early, completing 11 of 14 passes for 220 yards in the first half and touchdowns to Kris Durham, Orson Charles and Bruce Figgins. But the Dogs couldn’t get through this without some drama. They jumped to a 14-0 lead and to fizzle ad see Tech come back with touchdowns on three of their next four possessions to tie it at 21-21.

The Dogs jumped back ahead by two touchdowns on a Washaun Ealey run and a Justin Houston 18-yard return of a fumble. But the Jackets, who had 512 yards in offense (411 on the ground), drove through the Dogs’ defense for two more scores.

Only a missed a extra point by kicker Scott Blair with 4:57 left kept the Dogs ahead, at 35-34.

Defensive end Akeem Dent, on the field, turned around just in time to see the miss.

“I turned and looked and was like: I know he didn’t miss it. Did he miss it?” Dent said.

A 20-yard touchdown run by Ealey with 1:29 left made it 42-34. Tech had one last possession fall short.

Two 6-6 teams stumbled over the finish line.

“I don’t care what bowl game we’re going to,” Green said in likely his final game at Sanford Stadium. “It’s better than going home right now.”

After the disappointment of the 2008 season with Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno and the pronounced slide of the last two years, it’s clear Georgia’s future doesn’t come with any guarantees. Richt doesn’t need to fix the quarterback. But he needs to fix everything else.

UGA has a win, but it would be hard to be proud of this team and their performance. They were the taller of two midgets tonight. Sad. Very sad that this program has sunk to this level.

Outdated offense, and a very ineffective defense.

One more year of Richt and Bobo is enough.

512 yards of offense, 411 rushing from a Georgia Tech team playing without it’s starting quarterback. If Josh Nesbitt would have played they would have had 500 yards rushing.

Clearly Johnson let the dawgs have the last TD so we could make a run at the TD and two point conversion for a tie and over time. Losing by 8 is numerically equivalent to losing by one. But the strategy at least gave us an opportunity for a miracle come back. One chance in a million is numerically larger that no chance at all. As a huge Tech fan I must say I’m not on the Paul Johnson bandwagon. He has won the Coastal division and the ACC and has recruited NO ONE. That is very apparent in this years record and it will not get much better. The fact is that good players will not play this offense and you have to have talent to win at this level. Look at UGA, they have all the talent in the world and can still beat GT in off seasons. Not to mention the poor play calling late in the game. He has no idea what a 2 minute drill is. Its going to be several long and frustrating seasons for tech fans I’m afraid.

It was a rough season. The game tonight was almost too much to take. What we already knew:
1) Rivalry games are frequently closer and flukier than the line or the score would suggest.
2) Dawgs are better than their record.
3) The defense seems to be the problem with the Dawgs.

What we learned:
1) Tech is better than their record, too.
2) Turnovers should have cost us this game. (Thankfully, Tech paid them back to us with some change.)
3) The offense is still not firing on all cylinders, primarily in the run game (until Bobo locates the page that says “COUNTER” at the top).
4) Yes, the defense is that bad. Say what you will about NFL coaches defending the option. Our defense kinda stinks, especially against running teams, either for lack of time or personnel or both.

Hats off to the Jackets. They played a tough game. We just sucked a little less than they did tonight.

I am so angry I should not post. We win games and lose games and we should man up in our losses. But it is the way we have lost the last two years. This is not Georgia Football. When we lose, it should be because someone had to nearly beat us to death. We have either beaten ourselves or not put that extra effort. The defensive coaches are going to be alright, especially if they get some help recruiting. But the overall game preparation in some of our contest has fallen short. I cannot not for the life of me figure out what Bobo is thinking. The two things that should determine Richt’s future here is this year’s recruiting and next year’s record. I hope this predictable play calling doesn’t cost CMR his job. I know I am venting out of disappointment for the season and this game (even though we won), but I have many years of support put into this program. This is no longer just college athletics….this is big time sports. Universities such as ours have sold out to big money, so they should be open to petty whinny jerks like me, voicing my concerns. Georgia football is not life and death to me…it is far more important!

1. Our strength/conditioning coach should be replaced. 2 different members of the training profession have stated privately that Georgia is behind the times and specifically that Van Halenger is a big part of the problem with our team lacking what it needs to “finish the drill”.
2. Our offensive coordinator needs to be replaced. As Coach Richt just said on the radio, “we probably should have thrown the ball more”. WHY do we consistently stop what is working, and bog our offense down with our inconsistent running game?
3. We need to recruit some big playmakers on defense, and teach guys like Jakar Hamilton that trying to pick a fumble up TWICE and failing TWICE is a good reason to fall on the stinkin’ ball….!

I’ll take the ugly win anyday over a loss. Yes UGA got lucky…all that we’ll remember in several years is 9 out 10!

When UGA had to, they made plays. Tech knows how to do one thing…hand it off to Allen up the middle. I’ve never seen a more boring and predictable way to rack up 400+ yards of offense…Tech can’t run a 2 minute drill b/c their QB can’t throw the ball pass the yard of scrimmage without it fluttering like a lame duck in the air and into the hands of Justin Houston.

Garry, that’s b/c Bobo’s timid and predictable play calling put Murray behind the 8 ball with third and longs to convert (obvious passing situation) and then he calls plays where the routes of the WR aren’t designed to Murray’s strength to roll out and have a pass/run option.

UGA’s worst team in decades is still good enough to beat Tech.

Georiga is one of the worst coached team that I have ever witnessed. You are either an idiot Tech fan or you don’t know squat about college football. It’s true UGA underachieved this year however, Richt runs the same offense as about 2/3’s of the NFL runs. And many college teams in the top 25. So that might mean you’re an idiot.

Great Victory for Georgia, but Tech has nothing to hold their heads down about.
Tech’s offense chewed our defense up tonight, but the defense bowed up when it counted.
Fumbles equal poor coaching. Why don’t our guys know how to FALL ON THE BALL? Coaching.
Also, our (no) strength and (no) conditioning coach needs to be replaced.
I think Grantham was a good hire, but next year will tell us for sure.
Tech played a good game, but CPJ needs to rethink the going for 4th downs all of the time.
Nice win Georgia, but we should be MUCH better.

Green should be forced to return for pooping on his team’s head. Had he played all year, the dawgs would be in all likelyhood 8-4. WHOOOOOPEE! Richt is a good coach- but not the MAN. I see no reason to dismiss him yet, but realize that it probably means few championships (if any) in the near future. The problem with GA is that most of the players are too wrapped up in themselves to deal with doing what’s right for the team. Baccari Rambo looked liked a 3rd grader on his “tackle attempt” at the goal line during the second Tech score. When you have that kind of attitude and play—-you’re mucked. Yeah- maybe another coach could weed that out- and improve- but it could be worse as well. My suggestion is go learn how to fish or play golf- and quit depending on a bunch of delusional thugs to complete your Saturday. Otherwise, shut up and have a drink….and enjoy!

GT just didn’t want to win plain and simple. Uga tried to hand it to us on a platter from the start and at the end as well! You have to take the 3 points instead of going at the 20. It was free points and your on the road! TAKE THE DAMN POINTS! Then we fumble inside the 10 for the 20th time this season, unreal! Then the defense showed why we are 6-6 now with a joke of a performance just about all night. UGA defense was every bit as bad as well.

The uga defender clearly had his foot on the line and even forrest gump could see that as the announcers circled it on tv and even said it was a terrible call. That turn of events was devastating to GT. We actually could have run away with this game had we just cashed in on uga mistakes!! I have never seen a team run for 417 yards and pass for about 100 and still get beat? The missed EP was all i needed to see to confirm no matter what happened, we were not going to win. A missed EP…seriously??? Given all that mess and uga yet again was trying to let us win the game by failing on 4th down. There was plenty of time and timeouts and we abandon what was working all night just like last years meltdown at the end. Why? We pounded it down their throats all night and with plenty of time and timeouts, why not continue using what got you 34 points?? There was no need to panic! I just can’t believe we did that again after how we laid an egg play-calling wise at the end last year in which we could have easily won as well.

UGA tried to give it a way with a bow on it wrapped in gold with a 365 day no return policy and we just did what we have done all year and that’s get in our own way. Bragging rights belong in athens and i’m starting to wonder if i will have grandchildren before we do beat UGA again? Let’s get our younger guys ready for next year with the bowl practices is all i can say.

The posters on here who are bashing Murray are showing they don’t really know football or they have a vendetta. Have you all ever considered that the play calling changes in the fourth quarter. Bobo/Richt lose their nerve and start trying to play power football when they don’t practice it all year. Murray had no TD passes in the fourth quarter because UGA didn’t pass in the fourth quarter. Why didn’t they pass in the fourth quarter when GT hadn’t come close to stopping it all night? Beats me. Bobo/Richt sure have some strange thoughts on how to manage a game.

Raze

November 28th, 2010

Bobo had a great gamplan, let Murray throw little high % 3-10 yard passes, and let the playmakers turn them into big plays. Then run the ball in the 4th quarter to keep the ball out of Murray’s hands.

Each time he trusted murray on a big play in the 3rd or 4th quarter, it backfired. Murray missed on both 4th and 1 attempts, game owuld have been a 21 blowout otherwise.

fundamentally the two worst defenses I have ever watched on a field during the same game. wretched, dreadful, inept don’t even begin to describe them. Sure, UGA had some plays defensively (causing the fumble that Houston returned for a TD) as did GT (stopping UGA on short yardage consistently) but what horrid units.
The next defender that drags a runner down the field for an extra 3,5,7 yards as he tries to rip the ball loose, instead of just making the tackle is going to send me for the shotgun to blow the tv up, I swear. Where have the fundamentals gone?

I can’t believe Richt(or Bobo) opted to score at the end instead of running out the clock! Fumbles, missed opportunities, etc. I’m a UGA grad, and a fan for life, but I can’t take much more of this poor play. We won the game, but Tech should have! We are fortunate to have won, and all Georgia fans know how Tech fans feel. You can’t beat us, and we can’t beat Florida. Georgia and Georgia Tech should both be ashamed of the 2010 season. What a miserable joke!

I realize it is very difficult for the large majority of thUGA fans to put this game in the proper perspective. GT was a 15 point dog and not expected to compete. However, if not for a missed extra point and the GT defense not giving up the last TD on purpose, the outcome may have been different.

Your supposed superior athelets and recruiting classes may help you you rationalize the marginal victory but the bottom line remains that you were outcoached on all fronts. Say what you will about CPJ, but he coaches up the players in his program, not down.

I raise these issues so that you may use them as talking points when you report for the midnight shift at the poultry plant or convenience store.

It must be a miserable existence to watch the game in your trailer with the knowledge that you have to dress in your car to punch the time clock.

Joining the ACC was the biggest mistake Miami ever made. Look at how the ACC drug down FSU over time.

Richt is similar to Shannon…he’s earned some time with the SEC titles in 2002 and 2005 and the 2007 finish but even the most die-hard fans have to see that he’s lost something at UGA…on-field talent, command, something…and the program is moving in the wrong direction, and the off-field incidents and tonight stupid crap before the game just adds to it. Listen, if the guy could not win in 2008 with Stafford, Moreno and AJ Green, and instead gets blasted at home vs Bama, loses again to Florida with a chance at the east, gets a miracle win at UK, and then beat again at home vs Tech, I don’t think he ever will. I do think he would make a GREAT ACC coach where the stakes aren’t as high week after week. Miami plays two or three big games? FSU, Tech (and he owns Tech), and Clemson?

Fire Richt. That last touchdown was a boneheaded play, especially for a coach in his 10th season as a head man. Georgia Tech had two chances to pull the game out at the end; 1. Georgia scores; 2. Georgia turns the ball over. They had no chance at all if Georgia takes a couple of knees. Richt gave them a chance, and they ended up on Georgia’s side of the field before throwing the pick.

This is bush league, and typical Richt. Why we have to endure this is ‘11 is baffling to me. Maybe Miami will call him home after canning Randy Shannon. One can only hope.

And for those of you calling for an assistant’s head – get over Richt. He’s the captain of this ship, not Bobo, or Grantham, or Garner, or anyone else.

Just think how back the dawgs would have been with him, maybe 3-9. Don’t worry, Richt will be back (thank goodness), rode the good fortune of having a solid team when he arrived, problem is he can’t keep it going. I think ole PJohnson better find him 4 good defensive backs or learn to score 45 points every game. He also better add a bunch of passing plays into his arsenal next year too.

So this “genius” is such a great coach? Allowing the other team to score in any circumstance is like somebody hanging on for dear life on the end of a rope and then lets go to spit on his hands for a better grip!
He was going to ride down the field on a 2nd stringers arm while playing right into UGA’s hands: giving them offensive plays more likened to what they’re used to defending. Most likely that contingency AIN’T gonna work out for you there short-bus!

Well Mark, it looks like you will get one more season to drag the Georgia program down below mediocrity by forcing good athletes into your outdated offense instead of adapting it to the talents of your players (see Chizit and Mullen and even Spurrier.) One more season of watching a high school OC ruin any chance of this team competing for titles and a slew of fast and talented player under perform due to a lack of strength and fundamentals. At least you and Bobo might take a few minutes in the off season to review the games in the hope that you will purge the playbook of the bonehead plays (see Sprint Draw) whose frequencies of use inexplicably seem to show up at the most critical time in important drives. Might I suggest looking at the plays of just about every other team in the conference and steal the best of them. While not confident I’ll give the DC another season since he’s new and has to put up with that offense. By the way shouldn’t a defense have learned to stop over pursuing by the 11th game in a season. And finally Bobo, when you have a one point victory safely wrapped up don’t let your opponent back in by sheer idiocy. Good Luck

I cannot recall a more pathetic post-game “victory statement” than the one I saw tonight– ” We Still Run Georgia.” How about instead, “My sister only lets me make out with only her and no one else.” Actually, it was beyond pathetic. A pathetic claim of machismo and false bravado when the whole world saw for a whole season that there wasn’t any. Yes, you beat a rival with a benched star quarterback and an antiquated offense (as clearly demonstrated in its last two drives) which pretty much ensures no two minute touch down drives at the end of the 4th quarter in any game. So what! Your’re in a bowl game — the Jiffy Lube Bowl or Popeye’s Fried Chicken Bowl, or whatever. And there are your guys strutting about on national TV (even more pathos on top of more pathos) — yeah, we still run Georgia. It’s laughable. You run Georgia because a kicker missed a point after, but go ahead and strut around and stick out you chests on national TV, if it feels good. For the rest of us, the initial laughter and then after more reflection, the sympathy and then the pity feels pretty good too. We Still Run Georgia — it’s hard to stop LOL. Maybe you should get 2010 State of Georgia (College) Championship Rings engraved with that little gem. Usually only high schools do that kind of thing, but we can make an exception this year.

This article officially pushed me over the edge. Sir, you a joke. We won. It doesn’t matter how, we won. Tech has one of the best offenses in the country. We all expected them to score a lot of points, and they did. So did Georgia. And our offensive line has performed below expectations? Yeah. That’s why we’ve scored 30+ points ever since Colorado. We battled back. We started 1-4. People were saying we were one of the worst teams in college football. We battled back. We fought hard against Auburn. It was a game till the 4th quarter. Fought hard against a Florida team that seemingly beats us every year. But we battled back. From 1-4 to 6-6! That’s a 5-2 finish, thank you very much. Hey Jeff! How’d your Jackets finish? 4 out of 5 losses to end the season? HAHA! A loss to Kansas? Oh my. Ya know Jeffey, there’s nothing more I love then seeing your disgusting Jackets fall yet again to a superior Georgia team who you’ve gone 1-9 since the start of the decade. Have fun in Shreveport with yet again another loss to Georgia sitting in your head!

To gt nuke at 11:54 p.m…. NO SIR! You do NOT get a free pass on this one…. let us score, olsing by 8 is just like losing by 1, Tech just doesn’t have the guys to win close, etc.etc. NO SIR! All I heard from Tech people this summer was how you were ACC champs, your recruiting was SO much better, Georgia is weak, our defense can’t win games, we have a freshman QB while you have a SR, etc. etc. etc. All I heard was how Tech was going to whip Georgia in Athens, just like in 2008. And I ALSO read on blogs how ALL these Tech fans SWORE this was a 10 or 11 win season and a guarantee to get back to the ACC title game.

No, you don’t get a pass on “oh, well, at least we had a mathematical chance, we’ll be better next year, can’t wait until 2011, etc. etc. etc.” When GEORGIA fans say that, you kill us and say we are losers… but factually, if we’d had AJ Green earlier this year and if we’d had maybe 3 or 4 fewer turnovers all year, Georgia would be looking at 10-2, not 6-6. And of our losses, almost all were to ranked, bowl-bound teams… how many teams have to play Carolina AND Arkansas AND Florida AND Tennessee AND Mississippi State AND Florida AND Auburn in one year? Oh and ALSO play the defending ACC champions as their rivalry game?

You have to face facts and ADMIT stuff… you don’t get a free pass with “Gee whiz, you guys just beat an average Tech team, wait until next year, etc.” Nuke, that is LOSER’S MENTALITY, and THAT is why Georgia runs this state.

Sorry, Tech fans… hate to say it, but your smart-a** remarks earned it…. WE OWN YOUR SORRY BUTTS! We’ll win nine out of the next 10, too! 42-34 baby… enjoy THAT for a year! Now, quit your incessant yapping and worry about your basketball team… you might get beat by Georgia on the court this year, too!

GA won but it was a terrible win. In 50 years of following GA football this is the worst defense GA has ever put on the field. They couldn’t stop dawg crap. Grantham is the worst DC we’ve ever had. The players, with few exceptions are over rated and mediocre at best. Blame that on recruiting and conditioning and coaching. Crap, Dukes def did better than GA at stopping tech. What an embarrassment to watch. Richt ought to be ashamed to collect his pay check. The Offense as good as they look at times are as terrible as they look at times. cannot get a foot, a stinking foot, for a 1st down and also a TD.

Schultz is right. Richt has his work cut out but I believe he will not be able to right the ship next season. He loses some of his best players to the NFL and graduation and there’s no body to replace them on either side of the ball. If he retains Grantham all hope is lost. He needs a younger and more energetic strength and conditioning coach. Bobo is walking a tight rope. He teeters between being good and awful at playcalling. Neither Ealey nor King are SEC caliber backs. Over rated as well. And forget about the veteran OL (and their coach). They proved tonight they’re not the talented group Richt bragged aBOUT in preseason.
You can go on and on about this team. They’re a 6-6 team and proved it tonight. tech gave GA this win. How can anyone get excited aBOUT thjis win when all it proves is there’s very little light at the end of the tunnel in GA’s future football prospects. God help us.

Jeff, At least once I would welcome an unbiased article from the left based ajc, but after 41 years I, like geatech, have became used to subpar performances…Yes, the game was filled with miscues, but at the end of the day UGA won, just as they have 9 years of the past 10 and I suspect just as the series will continue until GSU or GSU (whoever declares the right to become Georgia second best football program) removes gatech from this humiliating series. Congrats to the BULLDOGS for completing a season with a .500 record and a less than expected post season appearance, but after this year we have a sophamore quaterback who leads the nation in freshman quaterbacks in yardage, touchdowns and QB rating. We have struggled, we have fought, we have won and we have loss, but anytine we beat the nats from north avenue it is a GREAT year. I will enjoy playing the tech grads on the golf course for the next year and drinking freely from their wagers. It’s not because their offensive line (that stinks) that they hang points up consistently…it is the play calling. Guys are wide open. Screens are hardly ever expected when ran. Running plays seem to come when blitz’s are. It’s the defense. You can’t win in The SEC and not play adequate D.

the most frustrating part of watching this 2010 team is seeing flashes of brilliance for one to three series on both sides of the ball and then watch them self destruct in slow motion. You can see why these kids were 4 & 5 star recruits. This team is loaded with athletes. The problems have to be either coaching related or these kids just don’t have the drive to be winners on & off the field. Richt still has a lot of problems to fix…maybe too many.

Mike Bobo is terrible I predicted 6 straight plays he called tonight. The sad part is that I only predicted 6 plays. Get a 7 point lead then run on 1st, run on second, force a pass on third and long when your qb is 14-17 with over 250 yds at that point. You cant make this stuff up. I would bet my house that I could destroy Bobo or Richt in a game of ncaa, especially in the coach only mode.

While those that say that CPJ’s offense will never be a juggernaut in the two minute drill all I can say is that you certainly have evidence on your side. But to those who say it’s a high-school offense that is easily stopped, well, evidence shows that you’re wrong. Way wrong. The game, based on talent level, probably should have been a blowout but it wasn’t. I can’t say this with any certainty but I suspect that it would have been a rout under Chan Gailey. It wasn’t and the credit belongs mostly to Paul Johnson.

From a UGA perspective, and believe me, based on the football knowledge exhibited by the UGA crowd on this blog I doubt I’ll get a sensible answer, I’d like this question answered (c’mon, there are some pretty bright UGA fans on here from time to time so help me out here): why, when you know that UGA has put more defensive lineman in the NFL than any other school over the last 10 years, switch to a 3-4? In doing that, aren’t you walking away from what it is you have done best?

Ok, now I’ve vented. I’ll congratulate the classy UGA fans, all three of you. We blew chances, you blew chances but you won the game and deservedly so.

I believe that your answer is that the 3-4 is the appropriate defense to match up with the spread offenses so many teams run today.

The relevant question is “Why don’t you switch your defense in anticipation of a wishbone defense”? We did it in high school, from game to game, so I guess these developmentally challenged recruits that we have in Athens just can’t handle it.

Of all the poor coaching I thought the worst was the decision to score the last UGA touchdown. By taking a knee you win 100% of the time. By scoring you give Tech the ball with a chance to tie the game. Tech coaches realized this and Georgia’s didn’t. Neatherthal coaching with no math skills.

the sad part is dawgs will lose many of it’s playmakers next year and without greene, durham on offense, our record next year could be worse.

our recruiting class will not help much because most of the top players will go somewhere else.

they now this ship is sinking fast and a new coach will be in athens in 2012 so the dawgnation will have to suffer one more dismal year.

Have to give credit to #18 on the GT team. That guy was something.
Why do some of the UGA fans not like Mark Richt? He seems to be a great recruiter and A.J. Green will great in the NFL. UGA has a great young QB and GT has a good offensive line. Neither team has a very good defense. Do you think Miami will try to hire Richt since he played there?

Very seldom do I watch UGA win a game and am compelled to proclaim them the worst UGA team I have ever seen. But that’s what I did last night. There are so many things bad about this team, and so few that are good (A. J. Green, Aaron Murray, Justin Houston … that’s about it unless you include the punter and kicker). As a UGA alumni, I pray that Coach Richt can turn it around, but in my heart I don’t believe he can. He has a poor coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball and an unproven one, at best, on the defensive side. Stacy Searel’s work with the O-line this year should grade out as an “F” when you consider that the O-line was supposed to be our big strength going into this season. Mike Bobo gets a “D” for calling some of the most inexplicable plays at some crucial moments during the course of our grand 6-6 season. On defense, it is just too early to tell if Coach Grantham and company need a couple of seasons to get the 3-4 installed with the right players or if Richt made a very expensive mistake in hiring those coaches. But what is certain about the defense is they played no better than Coach Martinez’s unit did last year.

Caoch Richt is a good football coach and a wonderful Christian man. However, I am afraid he has surrounded himself with some really poor excuses for assistant coaches on both sides of the football. I pray that I get proved wrong about this, but the evidence to this point suggests not.

I am a season ticket holder and missed the entire home season this year for the first time since Coach Richt was hired. I live about 4.5 hours from Athens so we normally go to 2 home games a year since it is such a major time and money investment to go to Athens to take in a game. I just didn’t see enough in this year’s team to make that kind of investment. I wonder how many games we’ll go to next year?

I slept like a baby last night after a fine Georgia win. Many of you will owe Richt an apology this time next year when the 2012 team is 10-2 or 11-1. Watch for it.

Meyer, Miles, Saban, Brown, Stoops, Joe Pa, they all have a few off years. Nobody is going to be 11-1 or 12-0 every year. Those days are gone.

We’ll take the win and move onto a bowl game but last night was frightful. GT defense had no pass rush nor secondary but we were almost as bad. UGA should have scored every time they had the ball.

Just enjoying my morning coffee and haven’t read the posts. I’ll offer this and read the other comments. Coach Richt HAS to make a change on the offensive side of the ball. I couldn’t believe on several drives in the second half that Bobo simply refused to try and establish a ground game to keep his defense off the field. I was surprised Grantham didn’t punch him in the mouth.

Mike seems to live out his unfulfilled playing dreams (throwing the ball on every down) with his young QBs and the playcalling. It was that obvious.

If Georgia establishes a run and keeps it defense off the field for an extended drive, this game is won by two TDs easily. Someone please tell Bobo to watch at 1.00 this afternoon for a lesson in “if they don’t have the ball they can’t score” football, courtesy of Mike Mullarky and the Falcons.

I don’t know you but from what little I have seen of your posts I wouldn’t call you developmentally challenged. I will, however, respectfully disgaree that the 3-4 is well suited to counter the proliferation of spread attacks across the nation. I was always under the belief that the 3-4 was to help take away the short passing game and create different lanes to help a defense generate a pass rush.

I just fail to get why Richt would allow this change when recruiting D-linemen has been a real strength during his tenure.

Well said Schultz. A meaningless game in which one lousy team with a lousy defense defeated another lousy team with an even lousier defense. That makes the winning team’s record a sparkling 6 wins against 6 loses, all wins comming against the bottom feeders of the SEC, a sorry ACC team and two nobodies. The winning team will go to a “zero” bowl that desperately needs to find two teams to justify its worthless existance. In that bowl an irrelevant game will be played that has no significance beyond the fact that one lousy team will defeat another lousy team. If UGA wins that game, then the loyal followers of that over-hyped, over-compensated, over-rated Coach will again proclaim that their hero Coach will “make things right” next year and that UGA will be a sure bet to win the SEC East as well as the conference championship and even be a national title contender. Answer me this just how embarrassing is it to have 417 yards rushing and still loose? 92 plays to 48 or something like and 38 minutes to 22 in possession time. The win by UGA was expected, and quite frankly nothing to get to get excited about. GT is a worse program than UGA, however the UGA progam is about to get alot worse.

I called it years ago and now it is finally evolving. Miami fired Shannon last night and had timed the hiring for CMR perfectly. Miami, being a championship program expecting more from their coaches, fired Shannon while CMR is under fire for a 6-6 season.

I suspect within the next 3-4 months CMR and family will be in Coral Gables back with his home school and Miami program and within 4 years of his hiring he will have a national title, which will prove the problems with the UGA program run deeper than CMR.

Competing programs are getting better, UGA is getting worse.

For all you dawg fans, tech fans, Bradley and Shultz. Ga 42-Tech 34…The “W” goes in the ga win column and the “L” goes in the tech loss column…Not a great season for either team and both teams need to fix problems with the defense….give the new DC’s a chance to do that next season with some of their own players…Also, maybe, just maybe Coach Johnson will start taking some field goals every once in a while instead of always going for it on fourth down, maybe its time some people give him some grief for his playcalling as seems to be the case for Coach Richt and Coach Bobo…As far as Tech letting the dawgs score, i have never seen another team whether that be in middle school, high school, college or pro…I just wasn’t taught to think like that and never, ever, had a coach allow us to do that nor did i ever let any of my players or coaches call for that…Yes, it would have been better for the dawgs to take a knee, but had we kept doing that its possible Tech would have gotten the ball back anyway, but to anticipate your opponent allowing you to score is just not something you really think about, maybe the coaches should have, but i just haven’t seen a team do that before…As for Ealey breaking thru the hole, you have to remember instincts take over and you do what you practice to do, i don’t anyteam works with their RB’s and have plays designed that have drop to a knee after you know burst thru the line and see the goal line, but don’t score, just fall down…Ok, experts tell me where and what coaches teach that…go dawgs…

Great moral victory for GT.

There is no such thing as a moral victory. Both teams had a ton of turnovers and Georgia ended up with the W. Georgia practically gave the game away with all their stupid turnovers. Can’t you just say congrats and leave it at that? Yes I know the dawgs had a bad season, but it is nice to go out with a win. They have a lot to work on for next season so they better get started now.

“They became bowl eligible, not because they were much better than the Yellow Jackets but because — until a touchdown with 1:29 left — the opposing kicker had missed an extra point.”

Um, yeh look in all fairness right after that UGA marched right on down to the 20. If the game was tied, we would of kicked a field goal instead of going for it on 4th down. Don’t pin the win/loss on GT’s kicker.

The last two to three years same results 10 to 12 players suspending for various reasons. No discipline and very poor coaching at every position. It is time for this AD to assess the football program and get CMR plan for how he plans on turning this program around. Each year top recruits come in and they lack motivation and discipline. The defense is a destroy the offensive lack any imagination. No one seems to have a clue what to do.

A box of red panties will be shipped to the Yellow Jackets because they dropped their pants again.

Caution…do not get caught up in the statistics and scores.from this game as the decider of future courses. A word to the not so football wise. Look at the play of certain players in certain plays and the returning roster for UGA.

It is good to have almost a month to review play and personnel.for Georgia. Alot of practice time will be devoted to next years players and where to make changes and fill the gaps. UGA will stress the running game hereafter on both sides of the ball. Look at the underclassmen and where they are as far as being physically ready.

Richt and McGarity must have a sense of urgency about changes. No rush, but there will be changes in the rushing game.

Two weeks to prepare for Tech’s triple option and Grantham came up with that? You’ve got to be joking me! He ran his 3-4 all game long with ZERO adjustments. Instead of putting 9 guys in the box and jamming the line Grantham put our inside LB’s 5 yards off the ball. I could have put a better plan together than that piece of junk.

Where was Garner all year and where was his input on the game plan against Tech? Is it just me or is time for Garner to GO!

I’m glad we beat Tech, but it didn’t need to be this close… that was a ghastly defensive performance.

The bone head plays by special teams and our inability to stop the Tech running game is pitiful. I agree we had two weeks to prepare for this game and we couldn’t do a better job against a backup QB? This game is a perfect example of poor coaching and execution. And it is insane to think we are going to get different results with this coaching staff. I hate to say it but it starts at the top. I am glad for the win and glad we are bowl eligible but the play of this team has been nothing less than embarrassing all year. and oh yeah, what happened to the great running back we were supposed to see in Caleb King? Since we’re 9-1 over GT this decade and we’ll win anytime from a good year to a mediocre year (I’ll claim this year as mediocre, even though Murray had a great FR year) GSU might be the 2nd best team in GA. They moved on in the playoffs with a W yesterday.

Schultz,
There seems to be one problem with your constantly-repeated phrase “CMR will be back because he deserves to be back.”

Says you.

A lot of water has passed under the bridge since the title days. Clinton got caught with a chubby intern, the wrong Bush son got elected President and Ricky Martin came out of the closet.

DISCLAIMER: I make no claim that this last sentence can survive the scrutiny of a historical timeline. Except the Ricky Martin part – that was a watershed moment for me. I was still smarting from Clay Aiken – now Ricky Martin too? I need to get my gay-dar re-calibrated.

In terms of average coaching tenure, CMR’s glory days are ancient history. The program has been in a steady decline since 2008. What in the world leads you to believe he’ll find his missing formula for success now? Most likely he’s searched every pocket in every pair of britches he owns. It’s nowhere to be found. Face it.

And all this talk among the “stay the course” CMR proponents has one common thread…that CMR needs to figure out what the problems are and fix them. That kinda ignores the obvious: What if CMR is the freaking problem? The ongoing process of elimination tends to point in that direction.

Does Coach Richt have to relieve himself on the big G at the 50 yard line before you guys are shaken from your infatuation with him? Or is it false UGA pride? Is it a fear that Richt has screwed up the program so bad, UGA will be subjected to the repeated and public humiliation of being the rejected suitor?

So give him another chance, he might can fix this mess he made. That’s better than receiving a “No Thanks” from all the top candidates we covet as his replacement.

Is there somebody better than Richt out there? It depends on what your definition of “better” is. Better than the Coach who guided his charges to two SEC Titles? That’s a fair question. Better than the Coach UGA has had the last three years? Open the phone book and point at a name.

A few have mentioned that Richt, Bobo and Grantham aren’t “the sharpest knives in the drawer.” This is a theme that needs looking at. When you watch Georgia, you just don’t get the feeling that someone smart is behind it all. You also don’t get the idea this a well-honed organization. Didn’t we lose the ball on the first and last plays of the game against Florida and then do it again against on the first play against Tech. We go out on the field rattled and stay rattled. Just a poor kid from Tech who whoofed a PAT kept Georgia alive. Otherwise the Jackets would have won this one. They were clearly more dominant that UGA. And yes, that was perfectly STUPID to let Tech let us score. There was not a lot of thinking going on.

Glad for the win, but nauseated with our defense. With few drive exceptions, Georgia elected or reacted to the option by “riding” with it rather than penetrated the option. If you “ride” with it you are going to lose continually giving up 5-9 yards a carry over and over again. The longer the option is allowed to move along the line of scrimmage, the greater the angles the back has to run through. The sooner the option is PENETRATED the smaller the angle the back(quarter and tb) have to operate in. You don’t ride it, you penetrate it early via stunts. The 3-4 was rightly exposed by commentators for its inside weakness unless you have a monstrous nose tackle to take on double and triple teams. For example, aka. Mt. Cody, for Ala. last year. It(3-4) is ok as a reserve passing defense but it has too many weaknesses on a college level unless you have specialized athletes. Most colleges don’t and most HS don’t. Most HS that are attempting to use it eventually lose in close competition.. Consider the games we Georgia might have won, if, the Grantham defensive 3-4 was not used so heavily? 2-3 more games, in my estimation. It is very vulnerable to the big play. We may have the specialized players in the future to utilize the 3-4. But, presently, Houston is as close to fitting the mold of a 3-4 player that Georgia has and we probably will lose him this year to the draft. I hope that CMR and CGT, look at improving this defensive group. Right now, as a defensive fan of the game, I am not too encouraged. The only bright spot was our turnover improvement from last year. I guess we must look for the “baby” in the dirty bath water of the 3-4. Right now, I am not sold on the 3-4 product.

If Miami offers Richt the head coaching job, he’ll take it. Why? Well, he has one year left in his contract at UGA, and it could very well be his last. If he loses more than four games next year, his contract with UGA will not be extended. If you were Richt, would you take that chance? Or would you opt for a five year contract with your alma mater? Yeah MR has a responsibility for the defense going down. He has assumed the responsibility and made the changes. Do you really want a coach that has no idea what is going on at Ga. to come in and scratch everything or would you rather have a good man for the job that is there that knows the issues and is dealing with them as fast as he can. He will fix it. I know what will take less time and we get to keep a guy with great morals. Someone that won’t let a program down with things like trying to pay for play. The Dawgs were competitive in every game this season, and that’s an improvement. but we still aren’t beating better talented (UA), equally talented (Ark, SC) or some cases, lessor talented(Colorado, Miss St, UF) teams, and that is on the coaches, and ultimately Mark Richt.

Amazing how Jeff can miss so much. Aaron Murray dictated the play calling of the dirt road builders’ Johnson and Groh. Yes, the dirt road builders had a lot of plays and a lot of TOP, but it took awhile for their antique car to move down the dirt road. Forced Groh to put two on Green, which allowed to Murray to move the Dawgs at lightning speed and quick scores via other sets and personnel. Forced old Johnson to call those timeouts because he needed time to move the antique down the road…call that TOP, too.
Much is made of the number of plays ran, and it can be reasoned, but the downside, greater chance to put the ball in the opposing team possession [call that TOP, too] via turnovers. Teams that score quickly and often will dictate the defensive strategy.
Now the other side of Murray. How much impact wil he have on recruiting for UGA? A great deal. He does not turn the ball over. Understands the small things in a game. Loves to put the ball in the end zone whether its his arm and a receiver or a number 1 tailback.
Sorry, you missed really seeing the game Jeff…like alot of the AJC writers…stuck in the past while football has moved past you.

Glad that one is over!! Everyone knew that was going to be a close game if you admit it or not. I know there are a lot of people that want to blame the defense on CMR. I was a little encouraged about one thing. Not sure if you people at the game saw it, but CMT was in CTG face a good bit in the 2nd half. For once I could see that CMR was very upset at his DC. TG could not even look him in the face and MR was giving it to him. Was I the only one seeing this? My friends & I were like “well, it’s about time MR got in his face.”

I knew the offense would put up points and at the same time knew tech’s offense would run on our Defense. I’m no DC by any stretch, but could our LB’s play any deeper? 90,000+ people knew that they were going to run up the middle and our LB’s STILL sat back.
I’m not sure what defensive people we have committed to the up coming recruiting class, but can someone tell me if we have any good LB’s coming in!
Still, Go Dawgs and great game by GT.

How do they let a jocksniffer like you who never played the game write about football? Your anti-Georgia musing just keeps getting old and stale and you should go work for the Tech school newspaper (if they even have one). The defense under Grantham has improved statiscally and with the turnover ratios for last years team coached by Martinez. Anyone who knows anything about football knows that a new defensive system takes more than 1 season for the coaches to impliment and for the players to learn the system. You didn’t write anything negative about Al Groh’s defense and they lost the game. You want to write about something negative then explain to your bosses why you and Mark Bradley are the main reasons that UGA people no longer subscribe to the AJC!

Look at his stats as a freshman, and look at comparative stats not preceding him at Georgia Greats but other NFL QB past and present. Georgia poor record falls clearly on our lack of making defensive plays all year long, not on Murray.. Outstanding freshman effort. Jeff, the dogs got off to a terrible start this year and I think fundamentally the coaches dropped the ball. UGA offseason program needs a total re-work. However, during the last seven games the Dogs have performed at a very high level both from a national and SEC perspective. Offensively, they have been among the most elite teams in the SEC. Under CMR, the Dogs recruited and developed some of the top quarterbacks in the nation. Defensively, they don’t have a scheme problem. The have a significant talent problem. On special teams, while on occasion they have been out coached, they are clearly a special teams threat and one of the best in the nation. Lastly, in terms of penalties and special teams this team clearly improved over last year’s performance. Your assessment of UGA’s team lacks real depth.

UGA get more coverage be it Good or Bad. Richt and Bobo need to be called to the carpet. UGA will lose a lot of TALENT after this year and then what? Richt went 6-6 and had 11 players arrested or suspend for games that cost UGA games. What do you expect Mark and Jeff to say. All is well! Nothing is wrong. We can win the SEC EAST next year with no changes and less Talent. The scariest things for UGA fans is that If Tech passed better or If Nesbitt played the Dawgs would most likely lost the game. If Blair makes the PAT do dawg fans really think UGA with Murray would have won in OT? I don’t know but I would trust BOBO to make some bad play calls, while Tech would just pound the ball in the endzone. No matter what team you cheer for the BRAIN TRUST at UGA is not much. UGA scoring las could have killed the Dawgs. All you had to do was take a knee or run around in the backfield to burn a few seconds and then take a knee. Think if Richt had done the samething against an Auburn or Arkansas. Either of those teams would have passed down the field and forced OT easily and won in OT probably. TECH did all they did with a KID starting his 3rd game. Murry lost his 3rd start 31-24 to Arkansas sounds about the same.
The CRAZIEST thing UGA 6-6 and the VOLS 6-6. The Vols way way exceded expectations with all they went through and now look at RICHT and the Dawgs! Tell me RICHT shouldn’t be on the HOT as HELL THRONE.

Mr. Red

UGA has been rebuilding since 1982 and only 1 national title in 117 years. GT is awful this year, and weak, but they at least have 4 national titles.

Auburn can talk about beating Alabama all they want, but Alabama has 13 titles, and Auburn has 1 title from 1958 and they were on probation. Auburn can try and run the table for a title, but their gauntlet is too large.

They have to get past Spurrier, then Oregon then the forthcoming NCAA investigation. There is only 1 thing worse than losing a national title, and that is winning a national title then watch it taken away.

3. Georgia has one 5 straight games inside your woeful stadium.

When GT let the Dawgs score to get the ball back, any smart coach would have gone for two. UGA was already up by one, so if they didn’t make the two, and GT scored, they would have kicked the EP. If UGA had made the two, Tech would have required two scores to tie. It’s a shame we don’t have a coach smart enough to figure that out, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

It is apparent that UGA does not have any top tier Wide Receivers or they would have been making significant contributions all year. No dominating Defensive Lineman are currently on the team and that must be a priority to sign several if UGA is ever to right the ship. Enough of the wait until next year crap.

Dawgs had the most points. Tech gave them the last seven. Tech would have won the game if you take away the turnovers. Dawg defense simply could not stop the option offense. Dawgs are just not strong enough, don’t tackle or block very well, and seem to have no pass rush at all. They need an attitude adjustment and recruit smarter players and less rappers and dancers.

The following is a comment made that Mark Bradlley’s blog would not accept:

Mark,

Interesting spin you place on the game After reading the article I had to go back and make sure we won the game I attended last night.

Give credit to Tech’s O line and RB Allen. They did a great job of blowing us off the line and Allen would get 4 yards just by twisting and falling.

Our Defense is a couple of players away. The efforts of the players was great and ultimately was the reason we prevailed. They refused to give when their backs were against the wall. I am extremely proud of the players but the coaches must do a better job of recognizing our shortfalls and correcting them.

Tech could not stop AJ, Durham, Charles, Figgins, and Murray, but our offensive coaches could and did. In crucial situations we ran 1st and 2nd downs into the middle of the line where we had made nothing. The passing game was going. Is that arrogance or ignorance?

Finally we ran outside and it worked. It’s been there all year but we have refused to run it. Not only mixing run and pass changes it up but different types of runs does it also. We have the speed to run outside but never used it until late last night.

When something is working ride it until they prove they can stop it. Tech sure rode the dive to Allen.

As far as outsmarting us…Richt was just being diplomatic and not putting down Johnson. He was probably thinking what an idiot. Genius had just used his timeouts and you are going to tell us he was going down the field in a minute on the ground with no timeouts AND get the 2 pt conversion…or he was going to use the nation’s worst passing offense to go the distance?

C’mon Mark, you are smarter than that. You are just trying to stir the pot or make Tech fans feel better about their situation. If they left the game feeling good about that aspect, then so much for the myth of their intelligence.

Oh, and BTW, why would a highly ranked receiver such as Stephen Hill or current recruits consider playing in that offense where the best they get to do is run the every 3rd play in to the QB and get 1-2 pass attempts per game?

9 of 10….Go Dawgs!

We have a Head Coach who is out of touch with SEC Football. A 6 – 6 season with so much talent and seniors is proof.

First…I am a Tech Fan

Second….I said UGA should win by 21 points easy…a blowout.

Third…..UGA has had 10 years of recruiting classes in the Top 20 and Tech has had 1 Top 20 recruiting class….Advantage UGA

Fourth…..UGA plays in THE MIGHTY SEC against better teams and harder schedules and the last 4 NC and Tech plays in the ACC which doesn’t deserve a BCS bid….Advantage UGA

Fifth….UGA has a bigger stadium and TECH has the Joke by the Coke….Advantage UGA

Sixth….UGA has 10 times the fans in the state of Georgia than Tech has……Advantage UGA

Last….Winning 9 out of the last 10, with Reggie Ball at QB, Close games, and a gimme TD with less than 2 minutes left in a game that should have been a blowout, then boasting about in reality a 1 point victory…..Advantage for being ignorant about football….UGA

UGA wins by a land slide……For those who really understand the game of football….Tech should never win this game or even be remotely close but yet it is always close and YES UGA wins more than they lose but against comparable programs where do you rank?????? UF….Losing….Alabama…..Losing……Auburn…..Losing!!!!!!

Tech is an over-achiever and the fans of TECH are just like the UGA fans……FANATICS about thier team……Yes we talk trash but we have a right too….We are beneath UGA in all categories and by all rights we should have been blown out of this game.

As a closing note….If all of the UGA players put on Tech uniforms and all of the TECH players put on UGA uniforms and had a week of preparation who would win the game? When you ask and answer that question then you will have all the information needed to speak intelligently about this game every year. In this scenerio the game is a blowout and TECH embarasses UGA with thier own players.

UGA won by 1 pt or 8 pts UGA should win every time these teams play based on pure talent……Again swap the uniforms and prepare and suit up with the other teams coaching staff and see who wins the game….It Will Not Be Close!!!!!!

For all you people out there who can’t do the math, Georgia Southern has the best record this year at 8-4, winning more games than Big Brother in Athens and Little Sister in Atlanta. We don’t need PJ back in Statesboro. Our OC/OL Coach played and graduated from The University of Georgia and knows how to produce an offensive line that can actually block somebody. Our biggest fear is that CMR will come and take our line coach and our Defensive Coordinator away and then we will be like just another acc school.
Meanwhile, GaSouthern is in the playoffs and working hard to get ready for Willam and Mary. I tought you all would like to know since the AJC seems to forget to write about the best football team in the state.

With AJ and Duram gone next year we loose a huge amount of production at wide reciever. If the Defense doesn’t get MUCH better we are looking at 5-7 or 6-6 again. Defense couldn’t stop anyone this year…looked really bad. The turnover ratio was better but we don’t win that battle we were just sad…stats on d were good against nobodys.

Jeff,

Who should our next coach be after GT finally wakes up next year and fires Johnson?
