LIVE BLOG: Georgia seeks bowl bid (and revenge vs. Tech)
Georgia players, angered by a home loss to Tech in 2008, planted the "G" flag after last year's win at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
(This will serve as the Georgia live blog when the game starts. We’ll also have a Tech live blog on, as they say, another network.)
ATHENS — Hello and welcome to the last game this season that anybody at Georgia or Georgia Tech will remember.
The Jackets (6-5) still have a low-level bowl game to play. The Dogs (5-6) hope to still have a low-level bowl game to play. But tonight’s meeting is really about the final opportunity for either school to create a highlight in a

mostly miserable season.
As Georgia defensive end Demarcus Dobbs said, alluding to the last four years of his senior class: “I don’t know if we’ve left a legacy. But I know if we don’t make it to a bowl game, that will be one legacy that we leave. … We’ve done a lot as a class. But the only thing that matters is how you finish. Nobody going to talk about the Sugar Bowl. They’re going to talk about what we did our senior year.”
Kickoff is still several hours away. But there’s no reason to wait until then to start the banter. This will serve as your live Bulldogs’ blog during the game. I’ll update it later when I get to the stadium.
A few thoughts before kickoff:
♦ Georgia is favored by as much as two touchdowns. Sounds about right. While strange things happen in rivalry games, the only absolute about either team is that the Dogs can put up points, led by the Aaron Murray-to-A.J. Green connection. In the last six games, Georgia has put up point totals of 41 (Tennessee), 43 (Vanderbilt), 44 (Kentucky), 31 (Florida), 55 (Idaho State) and 31 (Auburn). I realize Mike Bobo bashing is a favorite pastime of fans but offense hasn’t been the problem, defense has. And about defense . . .
♦ The only way I see Tech winning this game — other than via multiple Georgia turnovers and penalties — is if the Jackets run for a ton a yards and dominate in time of possession, keeping Georgia’s offense off the field. So the onus is on defensive coordinator Todd Grantham and the Dogs’ defensive front. The Jackets are without starting quarterback Joshua Nesbitt and their offense isn’t nearly as fluid with backup Tevin Washington.
♦ Tech coach Paul Johnson knows his team is undermanned this game. He’ll have to “steal” a possession or two. So a couple of trick plays, like a fake punt, wouldn’t be surprising.
♦ Neither team has a win over a quality opponent. The difference is Georgia still needs a win to become bowl eligible. If it can’t beat Tech, it doesn’t deserve a bowl. The Jackets had lost three straight until having to scramble to beat 3-8 Duke last week.
Now, about this rivalry. The road school has won the last three meetings. Tech has split two since Johnson’s arrival. But if the high point for this Georgia senior class was going 11-2 and winning the Sugar Bowl in 2007, one of the low points was losing to Tech at Sanford Stadium two years ago.
To punctuate the upset, Jackets’ players tore off pieces of the hedges — something Georgia coach Mark Richt has reminded his players of this week.
“Coach Richt’s definitely been quick to tell us about that,” guard Clint Boling said. “We’ve got pictures all over the locker room. We definitely know what they did last time they were in Sanford Stadium.”
Wide receiver Kris Durham, another senior, said: “That sticks out more to me than [beating Tech] last year. It’s something you remember. You can still Google and see the pictures. They’re very vivid online.
“Those [hedges] are sacred to us. That gets to you a little bit. We didn’t protect our own house. We didn’t protect the hedges. We can’t say anything bad about them tearing up our field because we didn’t prove it between the lines and they did. They beat us.”

He’s standing behind Richt and says the coach will be back next season, and I agree. While I’ve been critical of Richt and the direction of the program in the last two years, my view is he has earned the chance to turn this around.

UGA’s 3-4-5 star recruits + GT’s 2-3-4 star recruits + UGA is getting better as the year goes on + GT has been looking weak and mistake prone ALL year + GT’s only good player was Nesbit and he’s out for the year + UGA is at home = UGA should totally beat down GT around 51 to 10ish. I can’t wait until to see AJ’s last game. Big Bad Bruce might end the season 3-3 and no bowl. Could that really happen? RUSS is 4-4, BBB or Uga VIII is 3-2 and UGA is 5-6. It must be a bad year when the only member or this years UGA team that is a winner is the one named BIG BAD BRUCE.

Blackberry Pie, you are confused about who does chop blocking. Going for the knees is legal one on one, and that is Tech’s specialty. They attack the knees of opposing linemen. Georgia had an extra session in pads this week just to practice for the unusual knee chopping of CPJ’s team. When two people engage in the practice, you get the flag. We could look at who has been called for it more in the last couple of years; I really don’t know, but Tech uses chop blocking much, much more. They work hard to make sure it is legal.

Truth is, Bobo has not a good job, at all. Grantham has done a terrific job for his first year in a new 3-4 defense, without the right bodies to run it.

25th against run, 29th against pass, 21st total defense
Offense ranked:
71st in run, 41st in pass, 54 in total offense

I agree! The contrived grievances that are used to motivate these kids are silly. Just because a team comes in and beats you at home, tears up your expensive bushes, and then buys themselves jewelry to commemorate the experience, it doesn’t mean you harbor resentment for life. Those kids had never beaten UGA! Of course they were elated. I would, however, have made sure Tech paid for the bush replacement! The worst case of this is Urban the Whiny saying he would never forget Georgia’s excessive celebration penalty the rest of his life. He then went on to do the nastiest demonstrations of unsportsmanlike coaching I have ever seen–ten times worse than what UGA did. Too bad the coaches can’t teach the kids how to be a little more gracious in victory, but trying to motivate kids with bitterness usually backfires imo.

They were upset that Auburn's Fairley was trying to injure their QB. When he succeeded after a night of cheap shots, they lost it. Poor discipline, yes. But, in their defense I would say Fairley's cheap shots this year are the worst I have seen. Fortunately, somebody talked to him and he knocked off the dirty/cheap shots yesterday. And if UGA does anything like that (tries to injure lizards tonight) I hope the refs hammer them. When players hit hard and fair–that's great; when they try to injure–hammer them. BTW, Fairley has injured several QBs this year.

Even if they do go to the NC game, Oregon will score 100 on that pathetic defense. Auburn still gave up a ton of yards yesterday.

I’ve noticed Bobo’s team scored more points when AJ Green got back on the team.

What about UGA tearing up our field after the game (see Ben Jones picture) and planting a flag in the middle of it? To the winner go the spoils, but let’s not pretend the Jackets are any worse than the Dogs when winning on the road in this series.

You have to understand that Fairley and his cheap/dirty play had injured a number of QBs this year, and the players saw it on film. After a night of cheap shots/late hits from him the Dawgs got frustrated. Big mistake, and both coaching staffs addressed it I'm sure. Fairley did much better, although the same mocking dancing behavior was still evident after the Iron Bowl. Too bad.

I’m not going to sit here and rip into Auburn. Congrats to them. It was a heck of a come back win yesterday. They have not had any games taken from them and are still playing. Obviously the proof is not strong enough… so far. Until or if they are sanctioned I’m pulling for them to win the NC and keep it in the house(SEC).
I use to think that Oregon’s offense was untouchable until the last 2 games. If it does come down to Auburn and Oregon the winning team will have to score over 50 points. Talk about a wild shootout!! Of course South Carolina might have something to say about that on Saturday. Should be fun to watch!

FROM AN EARLIER AJC BLOG: Reading all these simple minded and illiterate comments from the THUGA rednecks remind me that I was right to routinely reject any applicant for a job when I was the Personnel Director for a Fortune 500 Company, Naturally being a Tech Grad (IM 1976)I already knew of the educational gaps for THUGA grads and the redneck work ethics they brought to the job. Occasionally I would, against my better judgement, feed one of the poor things into some half-ass entry level job just to seee if my opinion of their qualifications, or more than likely unqualifications, and without fail they had either already been fired or quit. The ones that managed to stay provided me daily glimpses of my mistakes.
It was sort of pitiful to seee the poor things come in with their degrees and actually think they were qualified. Frankly a degree from THUGA held about the same weight as Fort Valley State, ABAC, or Clark of Atlanta. Actually I preferred a degree holder from these Institutions of “higher learning” to THUGA as they knew which side of the 8 ball they were on and had better attitudes.

“Strange things happen in rivalry games”??? Since when? In this series…in my lifetime of over 50 years…The better team nearly always has won. Last year GT was a very slight favorite and lost. Every year GT has won except in 1990 – UGA has been favored. But luckily the Tenth Avenue crowd is usually the underdog and YES they also usually lose. This year will be no different. I have watched Tech several times this year and they really have little chance tonight. UGA is simply the far better team even if the record does not show it. UGA will win something around 41 or 34 to 13. So say a 21 to 28 point UGA win.

Going into yesterday’s games, Alabama and Boise State were both favored to win … and both teams quickly ran up “insurmountable” leads in their respective games. At that point, I’m sure all the ‘Bama and BSU fans were talking LOTS of trash. Unfortunately for them, the rules require that a football game be played for FOUR quarters. I don’t have any delusions about Tech’s chances for the game this evening, but I will say that we HAVE a chance. Two years ago the Jackets overcame a pretty large deficit to defeat the Dogs. It wouldn’t surprise me to see something like that again this year.

If Richt loses this game he will be fired. No way Richt and his staff could ever recover from a 5-7 season with no bowl and losing to a sorry Tech team. On a tour of Georgia, the Pope took a couple of days off his itinerary to visit the Georgia coastline on an impromptu sightseeing trip. His 4X4 Pope-mobile was driving along the beautiful shoreline when there was an enormous commotion heard just off the headland. They rushed to see what it was and upon approaching the scene, the Pope noticed in the water a hapless man wearing a University of Georgia football jersey, struggling frantically to free himself from the jaws of a huge shark.
At that moment a speedboat containing three men wearing Georgia Tech football jerseys roared into view from around the point. Immediately, one of the men took aim and fired a harpoon into the shark’s ribs, immobilizing it instantly. The other two reached out and pulled the Georgia man from the water and then, using long clubs, beat the shark to death. They bundled the bleeding, semi-conscious man into the boat along with the dead shark and then prepared for a hasty retreat when they heard frantic shouting from the shore. It was the Pope summoning them to the beach.
After they reached the shore, the Pope praised them for the rescue and said, “I give you my blessing for your brave actions. I had heard that there were some bitter hatred between the people of Georgia and Georgia Tech, but now I have seen with my own eyes this is not true. I can see that your society is a truly enlightened example of true harmony and could serve as a model on which other states could follow”. He blessed them all and drove off in a cloud of dust.
As he departed, the harpooner asked the others, “Who was that?” “That,” one answered, “was his Holiness the Pope. He is in direct contact with God and has access to all of God’s wisdom. ” “Well,” the harpooner replied, “he doesn’t know squat about shark fishing. Some of you Richt supporters have twisted logic, you think we should keep Richt because of the who else are we going to get argument. Thats ludicrous to want to stay a middling SEC team because of the fear of going backwards. Sometimes you just have to take that chance. We have become irrelevant. Sorry but I’m a realist. Florida, Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, have all won a National Championship since UGA. If Auburn wins it that will make five teams in the SEC since UGA won the title. We are no longer an elite SEC team and haven’t been for sometime and if you can live with that fine, but I can no longer. I can live with Richt having just one more year to turn it around but thats it.

Dude, I get that you are not happy at all with CMR, but you just made my point. There is no one out there right now that we can replace him with that will do any better. The really good coaches have been locked into these long contracts. There is no one out their to replace him with.
Your saying fire him yet you can’t think of a replacement. That’s like having a family of 5 and quiting your job without having a back up plan.

Hey I don’t get paid to come up with a replacement. I am sure there are coaches available but I don’t know who they are. I didn’t know who Chip Kelly was until this year and it’s worked well for Oregon. I would never have guessed that Auburn would have hired Gene Chizik but again,,,, Auburn is 2 wins away from a NC. Don’t underestimate Tevin Washington, Dog fans. He is a skilled option QB and will eventually run the offense better that Josh Nesbitt did…of course, this is only his 3rd game as a starter, so I don’t expect much from him tonight, but remarks about how he couldn’t carry Murray’s jock are way out of line.

By the way, Willie Martinez was vilified every week by dog fans, but Grantham gets a free ride. I thought great coaches adopted their schemes to the players you have and not the other way around. I’m not making it up, please check it out yourself. The A She She conference is awful. Some of you techies that claim your conference is better than the SEC are just morons. whos whinning? I know I never said anything about nick fairley in any of my statements I have posted on AJC blogs. I could careless about what he did, Georgia just lost that game straight up. I just know there are a lot of Auburn fans that can not handle winning. They scream war eagle all day and don’t even know what a first down is…lol…its kind of pathetic but entertaining at the same time. The facts are Cam newton is a great football player and thats the only reason why Auburn is 12-0 and not 5-6. I don’t care what happened with him and whoever or if he got paid or whatever. He will be gone next season so Auburn better win the national championship this year or they will have to wait a long time again because as long is their defense is as bad as it is they will be a 6-6 team or worse unless they put a cam newton on the field every season.

UGA offense has been great against teams like Idaho State. Put up 38 td’s on unranked teams. Even scored 8 td’s on ranked teams. Just powerful.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen FLA reduced to being just an average team in the SEC…and their offense is a train wreck. No identity on offense what so ever, no leadership…if you have 3 QB’s you have NO QB. I guess they are realizing how important 15 was…and that gimmicky offense without him is epic fail.
Everyone saying UGA’s in bad shape (and I agree)…but FLA isn’t that much better and neither is Tenn.
Has the balance of power shifted…I guess South Carolina will be pre-season favorites for the SEC East next year.

If the ncaa does do that. we’ll deal with it. but we’ll keep you speculating while we win. AU will be fine without Cam. We won 8 games last year with a TTTEEERRRIIBBLLEE Qb in Chris Todd. Hell he barely beat Kodi Burns out, that tells you had bad he was but managed to throw 22 td passess last yr. This AU offense is built around QB strengths. Last year it was throwing because todd damn sure couldnt run. Cam can run so you’re seeing more running this year. Doesnt take a genious to see that.

Georgia was more talented than Florida this year except at QB. The UGA QB threw 3 or 4 interceptions, had a fumble, and was sacked 8 times. It was painful. Florida has 4 losses this year, soon to be 5, not counting the Bowl game. But Georgia couldn’t beat them.

Man, can you imagine if that kid would have stayed at Florida? Dawgman, I have to disagree with you on that point. I thought the same thing, but during the second half yesterday, watching the AU drives that Bama could not stop, I started asking myself, if Cam was UGA’s QB, would he be as good as he is at Auburn?
I decided that no, he wouldn’t be. Cam made a couple of long pass scores but the rest of AU’s scoring drives are on the OC. I don’t even know who AU’s OC is, but he made adjustments at halftime that Smart/Saban could not keep up with. All of the motion and mis-direction had Bama’s D guesing (usually wrong) the entire second half. I hate Fairley and think Cam is a cheat/thief, but it was almost fun watching what a talented OC can accomplish.
My point is, Cam is a great talent, but if AU and UGA switched QBs, their seasons would still be about the same.
Auburn’s OC > UGA’s OC.

watching the UF/FSU game, a question came to mind…when was the last time UGA tried a fake punt, a fake FG or a on-side kick out of the blue? i can’t think of anything in recent years.. UF has tried 9 times this year alone. and has been successful 8 of those.. i know our defense isn’t any good(which would be a good reason not to try, so as you don’t give up a short field if you don’t make it), but, it kinda would be a good reason to try at the same time…

Yesterdays game proved that it was a team effort and not just about Cam Newton. The defense really stepped up and shut Bama down. Our coaching staff did a tremendous job by not freaking out and giving up like most other staffs would.

Ever since CMB took over play-calling in 07′ our offense has been a joke even with Stafford, Knowshon. I think that so much attention goes to the best conference in football today …the SEC of course…that ESPN feels in need to toss a bone to another conference and do the PAC 10. Just think of all the NC the SEC would of hadif historically if not for the very cozy Rose bowl that always featured the big 10 winner and the pac 10 winner. Often deciding the NC. So that the truely best team never had a shot at the NC if they were an SEC team. When the SEC teams did play the PAC ten they tended to get a boof ole fashion butt whipping put on them.

Damn glad I did not go to Tallahasse…..man, the Gators are bad this year. Florida must have a change at offensive cooridnator and at QB for next year….and the 27 freshmen on this team need to get better for next year between now and next summer. All I know…the Gators can’t win with John Brantley at QB. He may be the most overrated QB in the history of Florida football.
Well…..I hope you rivarly good is a lot better than mine. It could not be worse…..and FSU had 100 recruits at the game…including most of those committed to the Gators or considering the Gators. Not good.

It’s pretty simple, Murray needs to get AJ the ball. lol plain and simple. Hopefully our offensive line can get some push on the Jackets DL and open up some holes for Caleb and Ealey. It’s not going to be a good defensive game. If the Dawgs can get out on top early I think the Dawgs have a good chance. If Tech keeps the game close and holds possession of the ball that is their key to winning this game. Neither teams defense is anything to write home about.

scout, I am a nerd, as defined by a UGA fan.. I went to a great school, earned a Degree in a technical field of study, and make a pretty good living…yep.. AUBURN UNIVERSITY, the loveliest village on the plains. My parents went to Tech so I didn’t really want to go there..and the Regents still will not let UGA have an Engineering program..I guess they feel all that alcohol and date rape drugs (uga ranked top 5 party school year in year out) and circuit/process/structural design=a trillion dollar liability.

I just can’t understand how a team can practice offense all year and look worse than a high school offense at the end of the year. Everyone in GatorNation sees that John Brantley can’t play in the spread offense…and maybe any kind of offense for that matter. But Addazio and Meyer keep putting him out there. They stick Jordan Reed in the game….and the offense comes alive…just in time for Addazio to stick Brantley back in the game…and then we watch the drive die a quick, sad death. Well….at the end of the season…I hope Addazio role as OC and OL coach dies a quick, happy death. GatorNation would love to have Bobo as the Gator OC.

You could not be more wrong, by stating that the problem for Georgia has been defense and not offense. What happened to the offense against South Carolina, when the newly installed defense stood strong, and how about Mississippi State when the defense was so stout? Do you also remember Bobo’s call against Arkansas when all we wanted was three yards to secure a first down? The return of AJ Green is the main reason they are scoring more and with Vandy, Tennessee,Kentucky of course scoring over 40 points is no great achievement.
One thing you have stated with which I will concur is that Coach Richt should be given another year to correct things in Athens.

Shcultz and everyone else….It’s not about blocking at the LOS, the option is designed for that to be avoided, UGA’s safeties and corners are sitting back and not playing force…They are exploiting the natural gaps in the 3-4 and UGA’s D not forcing the issue on the perimeter…The QB has completed what, 3 passes in two weeks???? Make him beat you over the top off play action…Another UGA DC who can’t figure it out…

The 3-4 does work against the Option. You have to have a big nose guard which we don’t have to clog up the middle.

When are UGA fans, sports columnists, and commentators going to stop giving an NFL Defensive Coordinator who makes a quarter of a million dollars coaching college football a pass? I believe Grantham spoke so highly of his defensive scheme that expectations were once high have fallen very low. At this point, I am very skeptical of his ability. He has a lot to prove with this fan. I have yet to be convinced that Richt made the right choice with Grantham.
