Weekend Predictions: Dogs win — Auburn, not so much

newboard

Welcome to this week’s titanic showdown between 5-6 Georgia and 6-5 Georgia Tech, who battle for coveted The Governor’s Cup in a year where the Governor-elect is fresh off a Congressional investigation for ethics violations. Of course.

I think Georgia coach Mark Richt put it best when he stated: “It’s great to have a game like this at the end of the season, and in particular at the end of this season, when we haven’t reached some of the goals, or hardly any of our goals.”

And then he threw a pie at Todd Grantham.

But first, this raspberry in the direction of Ohio State president Gordon Gee. He’s a big fan of the BCS. People hear this and they assume Gee reached his position because he’s related to somebody important, sort of like Gummo Marx. Gee states that even if Boise State and TCU go

Think Gordon Gee got stuffed into lockers as a kid?

I'm thinking Gordon Gee got stuffed into a few lockers as a kid.

undefeated, neither deserve to go to the national title game, no way, no how, not even if all other schools lose or get nuked, because as Gee, from the bowl powerhouse that is the Big Ten (we kid), says: “We do not play the Little Sisters of the Poor.”

That’s true. Because Little Sisters of the Poor mandates that its games take place on fields with two workable end zones, you yutz, unlike the Northwestern-Illinois game at Wrigley.

You can tell everything Gee learned about sports came from Vanderbilt, where he was chancellor and abolished the athletic department. We all agree that Boise State and TCU do not play difficult schedules. But in a year when the SEC generally stinks and every conference is fairly “feh,” this isn’t the year to try to mock the WAC. Because last time I checked human polls, computers and Tarot Cards, Boise State and TCU ranked ahead of almost every school from every other conference.

Which leads me back to our little state of confusion and the Dogs vs. the Jackets.

Tech can knock Georgia out of a bowl game. OK, makes for a good pregame speech.

But the Jackets lost to Kansas. Lost their quarterback.  Lost three straight before beating Duke (barely). The Dogs aren’t much better but they have the only sure thing going into this game: Aaron Murray to A.J. Green. That will be enough to get them to . . . Birmingham?

It wasn’t the goal. But this will ease the pain somewhat in Athens. Dogs win and cover a whopping 12½.

This is where college football started:

Bragging Rights Week

Cecil Newton never will be as good as the original "Huggy Bear."

Cecil Newton never will be as good as the original.

Auburn at Alabama: It’s been quiet on the Cam Newton front. You would’ve figured somebody at Alabama would’ve started a rumor about him dating Lizzie Borden or being part-Klingon. But even if Cecil “Huggy Bear” Newton and the NCAA don’t derail Auburn this week, Alabama will. War Eagle this, mister: The Tigers are No. 5 in the nation in scoring offense but No. 60 in scoring defense — two spots lower than Georgia Tech. The story’s over: Bama covers 4½.

Miss. State at Oxford Correctional Institute: Let’s check in on the school of Faulkner. Houston Nutt is 1-6 in the SEC. Good thing he de-shackled felon Jeremiah Masoli or his team might be really bad. Nutt’s also suspended leading receiver Melvin Harris for an unspecified team violation (presumably not robbery because we know that’s allowed). Dogs cover 2½.

Florida at Florida State: The Seminoles have lost seven straight to the Gators. Maybe they should change their name to the Bulldogs. Don’t weep, little Renegade: Noles cover 2½.

South Carolina at Clemson: State police were required to break up a bench-emptying brawl in 2004. It wasn’t all bad. It sent Lou Holtz in retirement. Tigers in an upset (and take the 2½).

Is Derek Dooley going to a bowl game?

Is Derek Dooley going to a bowl game?

Kentucky at Tennessee: After a 2-6 start, the Vols have won three straight and can become bowl-eligible with a win. That would enable Derek Dooley to coach one more bowl game than Lane Kiffin. OK, for one week, everybody loves orange. Vols cover 3.

LSU at Arkansas: I get all of the Les Miles-is-a-lunatic jokes. But has it occurred to anybody that the Tigers are 9-1 and their only loss came at Auburn by a touchdown (24-17)? LSU in an upset (and take the 3½).

Virginia at VaTech: Virginia ranks 106th in the nation against the run. Another 10 yards and they’re officially a turnpike. Hokies win and cover 23.

N.C. State at Maryland: If the Wolfpack win this game, they’ll play in their first ACC title game and coach Tom O’Brien hits $150,000 in contract incentives. Me, I stole two notepads from the supply closet the other day. Wolfies cover 2½.

*** Thanksgiving Internet Only Specials ***

Patriots at Lions: Legend has it that the first Thanksgiving in 1621 was kind of boring. So organizers decided to bring in a comedy show. And that’s when the Detroit Lions became a Thanksgiving Day tradition. Patriots cover 7.

Saints at Cowboys: Jason Garrett is 2-0 as interim coach. Wonder if those tire marks on Wade Phillips’ f0rehead have healed yet? Saints cover 3½.

Bengals at Jets: Carson Palmer, T.O., Chad Ochobozo. The Bengals (2-8) are what happens when you try to turn a video game into real life. Jets win (but take Cincy and 9).

NFL Snack Pack

Wisconsin in January: It does strange things to people.

Wisconsin in January: It does strange things to people.

Packers at Falcons: The winner has the inside track for home field through the NFC playoffs. If you don’t think that’s a big deal, check the difference in January forecasts between a dome and Fond Du Lac. Not feeling real solid on this but Matt Ryan is 18-1 at home. So: Birds win (but take Green Bay and 2½).

Vikings at Redskins: Brett Favre leads the NFL in interceptions (17). And on the seventh day, the Lord rested. Skins cover 2½.

Eagles at Bears: ESPN’s K.C. Joyner calls himself the “Football Scientist.” He says Michael Vick has had “phenomenal luck” and is getting away with mistakes. Really? The guy has 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions. Did Joyner’s last science experiment involve eating paint chips? Eagles cover 3½.

“Money won is twice as sweet as money earned.” Eddie Felson, “The Color of Money”

football-moneyLast week (damn, I’m good): 11-1 straight up, 7-4-1 against the line.

Financial overview: 102-32 straight up, 72-59-3 against the line.

Lock of the week: Pepcid stock.

“Sack Schultz” (Our BCS title week!)

LogoGrass_652173aCongrats to Greg Fox of Roswell, who cheated the entire season and wasn’t caught once. OK, maybe he didn’t cheat. But he won tickets to the UGA-Tech game for his outstanding 137-43 record in 12 weeks. The HDTV will be awarded this week. “Tuckys” leads at 138-42, one more win than Fox, “jlalopo” of New Hampshire and “Tola” of Iowa. Good luck, everybody.

Game is a toss up.Hope the dawgs win. Dawgs may be too confident based on passed games. Both offense and defense need to play for 60 minutes, not 30 or 15. To hell with Tech.

You geeks slay me. Tech has won once in a decade vs the Dawgs and you still haven’t given up hope. What about 2008, you say. Well, at some point the UGA players get to thinking it’s automatic. Up double digits at the half and the Dawgs just took it for granted that they’d win and paid the price. It’ll be another decade before you win another. Paul Johnson doesn’t quite look like the 2nd coming of Vince Lombardi any longer, now does he?

UGA will score at will and Tech won’t have an answer…even against our defense. 42-24 Dawgs sounds about right. I’m being nice – it could be much worse.

As for the Kansas vs Colorado comparison, those losses were an early indication that both UGA and GT aren’t any good. I don’t think you can take it any further than that….but, if we must, CU was winning that game 45-17 before an epic 4th quarter collapse. Too bad for CU because if not for that, they’d already be bowl eligible at 6-5. As it stands, the Buffs are 5-6 and Kansas is 3-8…the only team Kansas has beaten all season other than CU and GT is 2-9 New Mexico State.

I agree with Clemson over SC. Last year, it was Clemson going to the ACC title game and SC going to the Birmingham Bowl, yet SC whipped CU. Exact opposite scenario this year and I think that plays into Clemson’s hand and they’ll get a close win.

12 and half is a big spread for a rivalry. Jeff, if the money was coming out of your pocket would you throw it on the dawgs covering? A 5-6 dawg team? Take GT and the points straight up and put the mortgage on it! Take a 2 game teaser with GT getting 18 and the noles getting 4 points all the way to the bank people!!! UF going down to ponder and company. I think uga wins 37- 31 in a thriller but not covering 12 and half jeff. Wanna bet?

Bama will beat Auburn – but I am expecting a great game by both schools.

Georgia should beat Tech – both programs are miserable…..who cares – but I will root for the SEC.

FSU beating Florida??? Could happen – Heck, even Georgia almost beat Florida – and Georgia lost to Colorado!

Tennessee and Kentucky? Actually – should be a very good game!

South Carolina vs Clempson – got to root for Carolina – it’s a SEC thing! Clemson kind of like Georgia this year – what the hell happened?? Well I do know this – Clemson seems to be recruiting extremely well – so Dabo may be building!!!

Gotta say, Jeff, you’re wrong on both rivalries. Bama can’t keep up with Auburn’s offense for 60 minutes, even against a rather inept defense.

As for GT/UGA, the fact that Grantham hasn’t seen an option offense before (NFL doesn’t exactly have the ol’ “high school offense”) may hurt them early on. I can see Tech feasting on UGA’s D, even if they return the favor.

UGA thinking they are automatically going to beat Tech each year is like Florida thinking that they are automatically going to beat UGA.

So the homefield advantage is the only thing the Tide has in their favour…..but Auburn is motivated because of the hatred and slander of reporters like you and the lack of respect. Get real. Georgia has only won 1 game against a team with a winning record.

You have a freshman QB who chokes in the 1st quarter & 4th quarters, and a brand new 3-4 defense, without the body types to run it, without the 3 NFL DL to stop the run.

Tech SHOULD win by 70.

Here’s what Tech will do:

Stuff 8 in the box to stop the run.

Double AJ.

Make Aaron Murray pass to beat you.

Murray will play terrible in the 1st quarter, his choking problem (see florida game in 1st quarter where Murray coudn’t complete a single pass)

Murray ranks last in the NCAA in passing accuracy in the 1st quarter.

Nerves.

Then Murray will relax and look like Tom Brady for the 2nd & 3rd quarter, when the game’s not on the line, bring it close again (See Florida/Ark/etc.)

Then Murray will choke in the 4th quarter.

He ranks 84th in pass accuracy in the 4th quarter.

So, it will be close for 3 quarters, and Gerogia Tech will pull away in the 4th quarter.

That’s Murray’s MO.

Jeff-

Georgia SHOULD win, if they let Ealey run the ball and dominate.

In the ACCUSCORE prediction, they agree with you.

BUT, they say Ealey needs to run well and score.

And we all, Bobo the Pass-Happy OC, doesn’t like to run the football.

So, unfortunately, Georgia will lose for the 7th time trying to pass the ball to win a football game.

Bobo never learns.

As a retired professor, I can testify that you do not have to be real smart to be a college president. I offer Gordon Gee and Mike Adams as prime examples. They are frequently sly, as in Adams’ case, but not really smart. Auburn nearly beat Alabama last year, and would have, except for some bad calls. The rank and file Auburn players will be fired up and perform above their usual level. Auburn’s defense stood up when they had to this season, and Newton has barely broken a sweat and probably won’t until the FBI interviews him. Someone really brave or really, really stupid put a # 2 jersey on the Bryant statue and got away with it. That’s worth some Auburn points in itself.

I don’t want to play any team that is universally told they can’t win. If Tech played like they did at Virginia Tech, it will be a game. We don’t have Nesbit, but Washington has some skills Nesbit does not. He is accurate and faster. No, he won’t run over a linebacker; he’ll run past him. The press (whoever they are) have told the Tech underdogs they don’t even need to show up. They are backed into a corner. Look for Johnson to put the ball in the air about 15 times which is 10 more than usual.

Bama in a squeaker over the War Eagles, although I’m not sure why I think that.
UGA big over Tech. I see UGA hanging at least 35 on them. Not sure Tech’s offense can keep pace this year.
USC over Clemson in a close one. The Ole Ball Coach will not be denied!
LSU continues to somehow manage a win over the Razorbacks. How many trick plays will The Hat call this week?
MSU in a close one over the Akbars. Mullen will have his team ready for a battle.
Kentucky over the Vowels.

I am an AUBURN Alum (living in Hawaii), who grew up with mediocre sports writers with AJC. There were the exceptions like Furman Bisher but for a town or shall I say the 10th largest metropolitan area in the U.S. the AJC still has a lot of mediocre sports writers. Jeff Schultz is definitely one of them-to say Auburn’s defense will be challenged by the awesome offense of the Crimson Tide is good sports reporting but to say AU’s defense sucks as bad as GT without taking in the past few games and their improvements (AU’s Nick Fairley is better than any DT on AL’s defense and a future NFLer)…what the heck I could write his column better than him & I was not even an English or journalism major (and I am not that good a writer). Wake up AJC-start recruiting and retaining 1st rate sports writers with class like Furman Bisher was instead of someone who should be writing for the Tucsaloosa News Sun. Maybe you could trade for $1000 and some used jock straps. PREDICTION: AL will be winning @ halftime-due in part to 2 of AU’s DTs being suspended; by the 4th quarter AU will be starting to pull away for a two touchdown win (+/- 3 points). WAR EAGLE!

As far as citing the polls….POLLS, POLLS, did you say POLLS ? Sorry, I went a little Mora there. Like the polls have never been wrong, or completely changed their minds from one week to the next? Or put BYU in a “championship game” with a barely over 500 Michigan? Or jumped one team over 5 or 6 others at once, some of whom did not lose(or even play)? or leave an undefeated SEC team out of the “championship game”? But enough with logic. The only rational response to such an assertion is… POLLS, POLLS, did you say POLLS?

If ever a game set up for Johnson this one is on a tee. The problem is you never know what is going through his players head. I think this rivalry we see as fans is not felt by these kids who never even thought about it most of their lives.

I was on the plane coming back from Chapel Hill last year after Tech beat North Carolina in basketball. The team happened to be riding with me. I was trying to sing Rambling Wreck in celebration and noticed not many knew the song not did the few parents of the players riding along with them. There was no excitement of beating ,at that time early in the season the reining national champions. I felt like I was riding a Greyhound bus to nowhere. College is just watching the clock to them, hoping it will soon be over and they can get on with whatever they get on with.

Not only that, clemson has come the closest of any team to beat auburn this year. and unc would have beaten the second best team had the refs not been a complete joke

back to the acc…did you see that ridiculous bs call in the fsu md game? the int they gave to fsu that was not even close to an int as the ball was on the gound, every camera angle showed it, the announcers said it was no int, yet amazingly the refs reviewed it and said yep int. why is that? oh they didnt want md in the title game. lets see if they don’t mind nc state being in it this week. i

Auburn has a long tradition of graduating football stars who cannot read. The arts and science of farming and football don’t need no books.

Alabama recently handed a degree to Joe Willy Namath, forty years after he learned to read.

The writing is on the wall for this game, but since none of the players can read – go with the farmboys.

The ole yeller jackets have looked like a blind man who lost his cane this year. They seem to feel around in the blackness, only finding where the defensive players are standing. On defense, they act like Al Gross has taught them the flags hang off the shoulders, not the waist. If Duke was anything other than a girl’s lacross team, they might have beat the wrecked. The bulldogs ain’t no seeing eye dog, led by boy scouts looking to help an old man cross the street. They ugly. They will have the techsters crying by halftime, and play rag doll in pit bull mouth the second half. Ga 62 Tech 0

Before his retirement, we only had to put up with him a few times a year. Now he’s on TV every Saturday. Is there ANY college football personality who is more annoying that Lou Holtz? (oops, forgot about Mark Bradley…well, at least Bradley’s not on TV.) How did Holtz get that job, anyway…and how does he keep it? He can barely even get his words out…much less say anything intelligent.

Football in the state of georgia

November 25th, 2010
10:53 pm

Who really cares about football in the state of georgia? Football in this state has always been subpar compared to football played in Alabama. Lets see- a 5-6 UGA team taking on a 6-5 Tech team. Yawn! Now over in Bama we have the defending national champions at a respectable 9-2 taking on the no. 2 and unbeaten AU tigers. And in the 4 head to head series between the 2 Alabama powers and the 2 Georgia teams the Bama teams own the Georgia teams in all 4 head to head series. Bottom line- Georgia football sucks and always has.

@Football in the state of georgia
Who said: “…the Bama teams own the Georgia teams in all 4 head to head series. Bottom line- Georgia football sucks and always has.”

I’ll make a vain attempt to try and fix stupid:

Many players on the ‘Alabama Teams’ are from GA.

I guess we’ll start with Auburn:
Auburn has 1 more SEC Championship than Ga Tech and Ga Tech has been out of the SEC for about 47 years. Auburn has approximately 1/2 the number of SEC Championships of UGA.

UGA has owned Auburn 4 of the last 5 meetings.
GT has smeared Auburn the last few times they’ve played.

Next, there’s Alabama:
I was about to rattle off a few stats about bama but all I have to do is bring up the ‘Shula years.’
That should be enough to send them back into hiding.

Dear state of Alabama,
Your teams are like all of the rest. You’re never as bad as you think you are and your never as good as you think you are.

Look for Tech to win, Murray’s too green, and new 3-4 defense is too green.

If PJ can’t beat Georgia this season, he never will.

If Tech scores first, it’s over.

All 6 times Georgia’s been behind, they went on to lose the game.

C'mon man

To say that the SEC “generally stinks” this year is being a bit naive. Just because your dawgs suck and florida is down does not mean the conference as a whole is down. Just check the West that has FIVE ranked teams and tell me the conference generally stinks. By the way, the same SEC West also has three teams that could win a national championship; Auburn, LSU, and Alabama (who has no shot in the BCS but has the talent and coaching needed to win one).

John Thomas, the play where Fairlie took his knee and kept pressing Murray’s neck to the ground long after the play was over was just as worse as the late hit in the back to me. Just an all around punk. And Newton’s over celebration after the UGA game was just plain classless. Don’t get me wrong a kid should do some celebrating when his team wins a big rivalry game but but the whole blowing kisses and “look at me” routine he did after that game tells you about his character. Celebrate with teamates but show some modesty and class. Again Newton, like fairlie, is a punk.

UGA whiners and BAMA whiners…you all know if CAM was a Bulldawg or a TIDETURD – that you would all be defending him and paying homage to him. Even if an investigation (which has yet to be completed by the way, but I will live with whatever the results may be) shows us to be deserving of vacated wins, etc… I’ll still ahve the satisfaction that ON THE FRICKIN FIELD – we beat everyone we played this year – whether by one point to the ROLL TURDS or by 18 to the whiney pups….that will never change. Cause despite the potential alleged action of Papa Newton – AUBURN has played as a team – today and all season long. To think if Cam had a usual game for him other than one rush TD and 3 passing TD’s – it might have been even better. Either way – we’ve beaten the ROLL TURDS 7 to 8 times out of the last 10 years. Again, as I stated earlier, I do hope that McElroy is OK – he has been a solid college QB with a great future beyond football. One last note…Julio Jones will beat AJ Jersey any day….

What you so happy about? Great win but too bad its just going to be forfeited when your pay for play scam is revealed. So why is Cecil’s church refusing to say how they suddenly came up with 50k to repair their church? And why exactly would the FBI get involved in college athletics if there is nothing there? Exactly. There is a reason why AU is tied for 3rd alltime in major NCAA infractions cases.

I’ll raise you on the idea that Auburn University paid the kid. BUT, if shown that they DID, then yes that will suck and I will not be proud of it one bit. But I will still at least take some comfort in a great season, still support my university that I actually went to and graduated from – riding my OWN wagon and not a bandwagon living in the past of what Herschel would do or what the Bear would do. I’ll take my lumps with class and move on. Either way I won’t make excuses and NO you have no idea who I am or what kind of person I am. However, the sad part is if all is true, then the REST of the TEAM, suffers the fate due to one’s poor choise. That sucks, but that COULD be the way it is ! Just how dumb can you really be? And why doesn’t Cam just flat out stand before a mic and flat out say any rumors that I committed academic fraud are absolutely bogus? I know that if my academic reputation was at stake you couldn’t get me to shut up about my innocence. That is the difference in a consciousness of innocence vs a consciousness of guilt.

Some had speculated – namely me – that the NCAA, and perhaps even the SEC – had been hoping beyond hope that Alabama would take care of Auburn yesterday and take them (NCAA/SEC/etc.) off the hook in terms of concluding the investigation of the Newton’s and the Auburn PFP program in time to keep AU out of the NC game. Now it would appear that they’re gonna have to get on with it in order to inform the world – and the BCS/NC voters where Auburn actually stands. Of course they could just sit on their hands…let the games play out…allow Cam to win the Heisman…allow Auburn to win the NC…prove to the rest of the country that folks down this way know how to ‘get our money’s worth’ when it comes to college footballplayers…then have to pull it all somewhere down the road.

And what happens if the NFL Players Union and owners actually do have a lock-out, or whatever it’ll be, and Cam and Cam’s Daddy decides that he needs to stay at Auburn for another season? Do yo suppose that his ‘contract’ with them includes an ‘option year’ as it were? And do you think that his deal would have included incentives for winning stuff like the SEC, the BCS/NC and the Heisman…and of course they would have been smart enough to have a guarantee in case it all blew up – as in ‘they won’t have to give it back’.

Sorry guys, there’s something rotten in Lower Alabama and the smell seems to be coming from somewhere near Montgomery….gotta admit though, they sure can play football. Oh yeah, I forgot about South Carolina….come-on Old Ball Coach.

Please, Please, Please explain how Auburn University is a cheater. Maybe Cam if he knew his dad was shopping him. Maybe Cecil Newton if he tried to sell his son to AU. Not one accusation has been made against Auburn University, not even an unverified one. Any NCAA infractions may have happened at Miss State where agents are obviously very, very involved with landing key players. Notice also how AU had no “dirty” plays against Bama. That is because they are not a group of thugs like UGA, always jumping on people’s logos and getting arrested. Sorry, that game was dirty because the dogs are and have been for several years, the dirtiest team in SEC. War Eagle.
