Mark Richt will be back next season — and he deserves to be

ATHENS – It’s probably best that we start with the latest indication of Mark Richt’s future employment.

“Mark’s going to be our coach in 2011,” Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said. “I haven’t seen anything in 11 games that would lead me to any other decision. I’d be stunned.”

The thinking is, it’s always best to end such declarations with even the smallest of escape routes. Because if for some reason Georgia were to lose to Tech 42-10 Saturday, finish the season 5-7, not go to a bowl game and later that evening 17 players find themselves in handcuffs for whatever reason – well, let’s just say you want the escape route.

But Richt will be back. And he should be back.

Let’s be clear about something. There are significant problems at Georgia. There are problems that may not go away under Richt.

The team has disappointed and underachieved. The Bulldogs are 7-9 in SEC games in the last two seasons. That nearly equals their conference loss total in the previous four years (22-10).

Celebrated recruiting classes haven’t turned into celebrated teams, an indictment of the coaching. Changes in Richt’s staff have not significantly improved the defense. Physically and emotionally, the team too often still seems overmatched by good teams.

But we should judge coaches like we judge athletes – in fact, like we judge all people. Life is a series of credits and debits. Mark Richt has built up a lot of credits. He deserves a chance to fix this.

He won two SEC titles in his first five seasons. I know. That’s so yesterday. As even McGarity joked when alluding to the fact the program’s off-field issues have quieted somewhat: “You’re only as good as the last few minutes.”

It’s the same on the field, especially in the SEC. When Nick Saban, Urban Meyer and Les Miles are combining to win four straight BCS titles, and Gene Chizik is undefeated at Auburn and  – cover your eyes – even Mississippi State seems to have passed you by with Dan Mullen, nobody in the fan base is talking about that great 2005 season.

Greg McGarity said he and Richt are "brutally honest" with each other in their meetings. (AP photo)

Greg McGarity said he and Richt are "brutally honest" with each other in their meetings. (AP photo)

The more likely response is: Fire the coach.

But dial it back for a moment. Richt was 82-22 overall and 44-15 through his first eight seasons in Athens. There were some bad performances in 2006, hiccups in 2007 and the smack downs by Alabama and Florida in 2008 that quickly extinguished any national title hopes. But the bottom line numbers are too overwhelming to ignore so quickly.

McGarity hasn’t been in his job for long. He said he understands “that everyone is frustrated.” He added, “The bottom line is we’re 5-6 and nobody is happy with that. Nobody is pleased, and nobody should be.”
But he has spent the past several weeks analyzing various aspects of the program, particularly since the Colorado game – “That’s when things began to slow down for me,” he said — and doesn’t believe a change is warranted.

“We’re dealing with a team that’s competitive every week,” he said. “I know people don’t like to hear phrases like, ‘We’re competitive’ and, ‘We’re giving it everything we’ve got.’ Trust me, I get that. We all want different results. But I also see a program that is not in disarray.

“The bottom line is we need to close games better and I also believe this is a critical recruiting class for us. I feel like there are a lot more positive signs than negative signs, even though it hasn’t shown up in the win category.”

McGarity and Richt have a standing meeting every Friday. McGarity said the two have a great and open relationship. “We’re brutally honest with each other,” he said.

He declined to discuss specifics of their discussions but said: “We both want the same thing. The question is how we get there.”

It’s justified for anybody who follows the Georgia program to be upset about the record, about the loss in Colorado, about the fact the team hasn’t been a player in the SEC East for two years. It’s justified to wonder about direction. But Richt deserves another season to figure it out. His resume has earned him that.

What troubles me is it took McGarity 11 games to figure out that a Coach who had finished in the top 10, 18 times over the last 24 seasons as a coach, was good enough to be back next season. Richt finished in the top 10, 6 out of 9 seasons at Georgia, 4 tp 10 seasons in a row, something Saban or Meyer will never do.

I’ve challenged all my sports fanatic buddies to name 1 positive thing McGarity has done for Georgia, that helped Richt in 2010, as of yesterday, not one of my sports fanatic buds could name 1 thing. McGarity’s simply horrendous.

I’m as big a Dawg fan as they are but if losing to Tech means firng Richt then I’m all far it. Under Richt Georgia will never see the top 10 again…much less win a SEC Championship and the thoughts of a National Championship is laughable.

I think he’s gone as far as a coach that he’s ever going to go. Most of the success was with Donnan recruited players. For ever year the Dawgs wait will be another year before we can begin to rebuild the program…..and that in and of itself will take years.

Andrew,

I totally agree. McGarity hasn’t done anything but drink the Richt kool aid. I had hopes he would straighten things out, but he’s just another yes-man. Very disappointed that it’s probably going to be many years before we’re SEC relevant again. Hoping for a win against Tech just to go to a also-ran bowl game is a sad commentary on our program.

McGarity can fix one thing right away and make the week before Fla/Jax a bye week… I know that will cause us some future losses against Tech but we have to start getting competitive against the SEC first and get back to the Dome during December…

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it now, as much as it pains me: we (the Dogs) have the most delusional, unreasonable and least knowledgeable fanbase in the SEC, with the possible exception of, well. no one. He needs to make changes, sure, and hopefully he will.
We lost three D linemen, two linebackers, two D backs to the NFL, you don’t think that would be noticed by any other program? Give it time, he’ll have it back and it’ll start next year. In the mean time, go get Tech!

Dawg with the bag again, did you really think McGarity would make immediate sweeping changes? If so maybe you better just keep the bag on. Evans was apparently to busy skirt chasing to do his job. I theorize that could be a factor in why the CMR led program slid over the years. Of course another reason could be he really doesn’t have a clue what it takes to build and maintain a championship competetive team.

If McGarity makes a difference it’s going to show up over three years….Subtle changes and influence at his level. Hopefully it will start with a new staff and a new approach for CMR….

MR didn’t have HIS team ready to play in the opening game of the season. He had a new defensive coach and a freshman QB. that had to get some playing time under his belt, and the ten or so arrests didn’t help either. I think we’d be idiots to let him get away. He’s just got his priorities out of order and maybe this season is his wakeup call. If the Dawgs look like the Keystone Cops in their first 3 or 4 real games next year then yeah let him go, but at least go with him another year maybe two. Look at how patient Tennessee was with “hic” Johnny Majors. Joe Paterno has had a few bad years, and Urban Meyer ain’t looking too hot either. If we let him get away he can and probably will come back to haunt us.

Why don’t you UGA fans face reality? You have a top 25 program but not a top five program. You had three top years, 1980-1982. Thirty years ago. Stop pretending that you are one of the elite programs because you aren’t. UGA isn’t even one of the top programs in its own conference, much less nationally. Get real folks.

UGA has turned into the biggest joke of all the SEC schools. One might have hoped that McGarity would bring some shrewd sports acumen to the program, but he’s just another goober taking up space. He has no plan – he has no clue. CMR will NOT have another good season and will only be shown the door when the GA Dogs reach their absolute nadir next season. Then, when the money dries up, McGarity will finally start interviewing replacements. After being turned down by the first 3 choices, he will bring in a young, former high school coach who is eager for the experience. This program will take years and years to rebuild. Mark this post! This program IS and will remain in ruins.

How can the problem be more talent and less coaching staff, issue ?

Who recruited these players here ?

Who gave Scholarships to half a dozen walk-ons instead of to recruits we never even offered ?

Who recruited Cam Newton as a Tight End ?

Who has Herschel Walker saying we have No Discipline ?

You think that is the players when the players, recruited by the coaching staff, take full advantage of the “coaching staff” ? The players don’t respect this “coaching staff.” The recruits told you 2010 that they did not sign here because they found the coaching staffs at the other SEC teams are better than our “coaching staff.” The recruits are telling you AGAIN for 2011 signing date that again they find other coaching staffs better than our own, better for them. The 2009 recruiting class, recruited here by this “coaching staff” are no longer even in this football program. With all these down years of recruiting, followed by down years in on-field performances the Richt-o-file Richt Apologists, have blamed the players for all the arrests / suspensions off-the-field, and made up their long list of Excuses and lies that oh well, we are just wrong that Coach Richt’s “coaching staff” has not lost 20 games the last 5 years, 4 Losses per Year average over the entire last 5 years.

We have Aaron Murray.

He has been our best player all season long.

He has no running game, none coming next season, either, and no Offensive Line, and now he loses his best wide receiver. AJ Green was here for Colorado; we LOST. AJ Green was here for Florida; we LOST. Those are two (2) sorry football teams this season, and we LOST to BOTH. AJ Green was here for Auburn, and again we LOST.

Richt Apologists want to say we are a better team after AJ Green came back from trying to cheat his teammates and cheat the NCAA selling a T-Shirt worth at most $29 for $1000. Really ? Who the hell have we beat since AJ Green came back ?

3-9 vs Top 10 Final AP Poll teams, entire Coach Richt Era of 10 years.

10 LOSSES in 10 years vs NOT Top 25 Final AP Poll teams.

Lousy recruiting classes, simply lousy.

# 2 worst in the nation average arrests / suspensions the last 5 years.

4 losses a year average per year for all 5 of the last 5 years. 2011 no different.

Yep, CMR gets another year and fans get more disappointments. The guy is NOT National Championship material. Dawgs fan fear the unknown more than just about any group of people I know. Most don’t think CMR is going to produce a national championship caliber team, but they’re TERRIFIED of getting somebody else in and all the unknowns that go with that. A known devil is always better than an unknown one in their eyes. CMR has been at the helm for 10 years. We had a few good years early on, but nothing that produced a national championship team. He’s out classed by Meyer, Saban, Mullen, AND Spurrier. What do you think Spurrier would have done with the talent and resources that CMR has had available to him? Much less the other elite coaches. Nah, we have 7-5 seasons beating AA teams and Vandy ahead of us until CMR leaves. It’s SO time for some new blood in Athens. Go Dawgs.

He deserves to be back? Are you kidding? He is paid between 2 to 3 million dollars to be an also ran in the SEC for 5 years? He made it on Donnan’s talent. Since then, he red-shirted Morneo and could not win the SEC with two firat round picks (morneo and Stafford). He offered Can Newton as a tight end. He is playing Carlton Thomas at running back, who is not an SEC caliber running back. He held on to Martinez and his defensive staff 3 years too long. Should I go on……

Seems the biggest thing in CMR’s favor is the paucity of viable replacements – or so goes the notion often offered by the “stay-the-course” crowd.

The rationale to keep Richt because there’s “no one better” is a little shaky. No one better than which Mark Richt – CMR the first five years of his tenure; or CMR the last four years; CMR last three years; or CMR this year and last?

I suspect there are dozens of coaches with resumes superior to CMR’s 2008 – 2010.

What’s indisputable is the consistent downward trend of the program (three years and counting) under Richt’s watch. What’s indisputable is that UGA has all the resources needed to achieve and maintain a top flight, conference-championship contending program every year. What’s indisputable is that Richt has squandered the resources available to him three years running.

What’s speculative (to put it kindly) is the thinking is that CMR can recapture the “magic” of his early years as UGA head man.

And if you believe the pundits, it’s indisputable that CMR has an inexhaustible supply of good will from which to draw. Good for CMR certainly; bad for UGA football probably.

Since we are all being “brutally honest” here, what about the fact that Richt has has top 5 & top 10 recruiting classes the last 5 years and hasn’t coached them to to 10 or top five finishes ? So now he has the 20th ranked recruiting class and we are supposed to believe he can coach them to a top 5 finish and SEC Championship next year ? If UGA can’t get back to being top 5 in recruiting UGA will never be better than Fla.,Auburn,Bama, and LSU. You all know that’s the plain truth. As for his resume ? I used to run a 4.6 40 but run a 5.3 40 now. My previous speed matters not today…

Jim Harbaugh. If he can make Stanford a tough, physical, smash mouth program in the PAC-10, then just think what he could do with the recruits in this part of the country. Stanford could line up against Alabama and Auburn and South Carolina. We can’t, those teams are way too physical for us.

King’s Queen. The recruiting rankings are skewed by the fact that they have recruited QB’s very well. The meat and potato’s are where they are failing.

Many of the guys on the defensive line are young but talented although wrong for this new scheme. The offensive line well…. Stacy Searles has got a lot of explaining to do there and they haven’t recruited well in that area.

Linebacker will be better next year due to the defection of Jones and moving Samuel to his better suited position.

Safety play has been poor for a long time not because they aren’t athletic, they just don’t seem to care or understand thier role.

Georgia has had pretty good CB’s they just don’t quite have the size some would prefer.

WR’s haven’t been developed. These guys all have talent they simply aren’t getting better quickly enough.

Running Back is another position that they simply do not match up talent wise anymore with other programs. So even if they did everything technically perfectly like blocking and not fumbling they still would be behind most other good teams. They aren’t getting yards on thier own right now.

I feel like they have very good TE’s and Fullbacks but that only does so much.

Outside of AJ Green and Murray on offense there are no game changers right now.

Outside of Houston on defense there are no real game changers.

They don’t have a guy like Max Gene Gilles anymore on the OL.

So the recruiting rankings while good, mainly just show that they’ve got a lot of highly rated QB’s and skill players several if not most of which have yet to show thier real potential.

Injuries and suspensions have really, really hurt the team.

Jeff Schultz made some valid points. However I disagree about Mark Richt remaining as head coach. Even if UGA wins over Tech this weekend and are lucky enough to win a bowl game, Richt’s record the last two seasons would only be 15-11 which is unacceptable in my eyes. In 2008 UGA was picked to win a national championship and failed to do so. Greg McGarity needs to talk with Alabama’s AD and ask for permission to offer Kirby Smart UGA’S head coaching job. Richt needs to fired and fired now.

PMC is exactly correct, although T. King should continue to improve, that being said Green and Houston mean everything to this team, and if Richt and Grantham can’t talk them into staying in school, then we are in deep do do beginning on September 3, 2011. Richt has not gotton what he needs out of his best recruits, period. He and the recruiting staff desperately need to evaluate players who feel obligated to UGA once they have signed their letters of intent. To date, of the skill type players who have made a difference few of those come to mind. MoMass and D.J. Shockley are two players that can be commended for being what a lot of Bulldog people I know would put into this category. Stafford was not. Moreno was not. We will see about Green and Houston, but as far as Green goes, every single UGA alum I run into says the same thing, “A.J. Green owes us another year.” Saban and Myer and even that moron Les Miles have gotton a lot more mileage out of their top players. I am not sure Richt really understands the SEC. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that most all of the SEC teams were down when he came to UGA, and now that they are back at full strength he finds himself overwhelmed. I truly believe that Richt really thought he did something when he beat Hawaii in the Suger Bowl. Everyone that knows the SEC, no matter what their allegence knew that this was the biggest mismatch that had ever come to pass in the history of the Sugar Bowl. Richt is an ACC type of coach that has never really bought in to what everyone who knows the SEC knows. I can’t believe that Vince Dooley has not tried to help Richt understand the fundamental things that it has always taken to be relevant in this league. The old farts at Georgia have always placed way to much importance on this game with Tech. It means nothing. There are reasons why the big rivalries in America are what they are. UGA versus Georgia Tech is just as meaningless as South Carolina versus Clemson. Many believe that Donnan would have won the SEC inside two years as well, but was run off because of his record against Tech. What these people are defending are actually two underacheiving seasons in 2002 and 2005, where in 2002 everyone was holding their breath to see if UGA could beat Alabama who was just hit hard with probation, and being coached by their version of Ray Goff. This all needs to be looked at through very clear glasses, not rose colored ones. 2005 saw UGA’s defensive problems with Wee Willie show up in the Auburn game that year, not the West Virginia Sugar Bowl. That was just a continuation of Willies first problems. This was a year where UGA backed into the SEC Championship because of other teams losses, not UGA’s wins. I just have a hard time seeing where Mark Richt has earned the right to anything.
