So I can get Georgia State and 42½ vs. Alabama? Hmm…

Are you really going to pull for this guy ...

Are you really going to pull for this guy . . .

. . . instead of this guy?

. . . instead of this guy? I don't think so.

It’s understandable if Georgia and Georgia Tech fans are biy down (angry) these days about the fortunes of their teams. So I’m going to suggest a nice little diversion for you this week, a matchup surely to unify the masses: Bill Curry vs. Nick Saban.

I mean, come on. Do you really have to think about this?

Curry goes back to Tuscaloosa, where he once had a brick thrown through his office window, Thursday night when his Georgia State Panthers visit Saban and Alabama. It’s believed to be the first time a first-year program has played a defending national champion.

So I had to ask: What are the odds?

Since Las Vegas sportsbooks don’t post official point spreads on games involving Division 1-AA (FCS) teams, I checked with my man, Todd Fuhrmann, of the Caesars Palace sportsbook to set an artificial line. His number: 42½ points. While Caesars won’t take accept wagers, some online sportsbooks will post odds in the next day or so and the line figures to be similar.

So 42½, eh? Saban figures to pull his starters at some point because the Tide just played Saturday. He’ll want them rested for the Auburn game next week. So the line’s a little tempting.

Here’s Fuhrmann’s lopsided analysis: “I look for Nick Saban to take his foot off the gas late and use a very vanilla offense in preparation for the Iron Bowl. The biggest question for Georgia State backers is will the clock run out before Bama has a chance to roll up nearly 450 rushing yards against the Panthers’ smaller defensive front. There’s about a 30-pound [per player] difference up front so [Mark] Ingram and [Trent] Richardson will be running down hill.”

Party pooper.

Seriously, though: I’ll have a column on Curry posted later today. He was pretty revealing the other day when we spoke about how much he’s changed as a person since his obsessed coaching days at Alabama and Kentucky, and the sobering moments with his family that brought it all home.

Until then, what do you think: Is 42½ points enough?

At the very least, can I assume most folks will adopt State as their team for one night?

Jeff, I would take Bama in your hypothetical wager even though Saban, love him or hate him, isn’t one to humiliate his opponents by running up the score.

I’d pay to hear a Bill Curry speech. The guy has wisdom spewing out with every breath.

Very classy guy.

42 1/2 is enough. Saban won’t be looking to run the score up on them.

Bama wins by no more than 30. Unless, ofcourse the third and fourth teams can roll up the score.

Alot of running plays, alot of clock movement.

Oh yeah, playing Ga. State before playing Auburn is best of all worlds. I know three kids who will be going over to see State and these kids are not scrubs…

Go Georgia State. The purest football program in Georgia. If UGA had half the desire and discipline that Ga. State has, they might be playing in the SECCG. But Mark Richt will never have that kind of team at UGA.

Saban will get about a 28 point lead and then the scout team will come in. I’ll take state and the 42 1/2.

And I’d take Curry over Richt at this point.

Saban doesn’t run up the score. Ask if he went for two up by 4 scores late in the game against Auburn a few years back. Or maybe if he was throwing in the end zone at the end of the game to make it 36-0. He certainly will run up the score when he wants to.

Granted – if he does it in this game – one of the most disgusting mismatches since David vs. Goliath (wait…) he should be flogged.

Go Panthers!!!

I don’t see us even beating their third string players.

Unfrotunately, we have not been able to stop ANYONE’S rushing game all season.

Forget Ingram and Richardson. Their third guy will still post up 150 yards on us.

And God love Drew Little. He’s awesome. And thankfully so, because there is no running game behind him.

It’s going to be a tough assignemtn for him though, as Alabama will never have to blitz and can play pass defense all day long.

42.5 points? Hell, I’d be happy with that.

If this was Urban Meyer, he would have his QB in the shotgun throwing in the 4th quarter. Any all of sports writers would say, “that is ok, he is doing it for Tebow”.

If this was Auburn, the coach would be pumping his fist in excitement at his goons as they hit the QB late in the 4th quarter.

If this was Auburn playing, they would play Cam as much as possible in order to get the most yards for their money.

Jeff:

Check out a guy named Milton Gilley … the owner of Macon County Greyhound … an Auburn grad. Very wealthy … $1 million donation to Auburn in 2008 … invested $16 million in Bobby Lowders bank before it went under.

He and 10 other people were arrested by the FBI on 10/4/2010 in a massive bribing scandal in Alabama. This is the connection to Cam Newton (and perhaps other Auburn players) who were being paid to play at Auburn. Bye, bye Auburn.

Run with it dude … this it it!!!

Tell your friend at Caesar’s to do some more research. No Julio Jones, No Trent Richardson (didn’t play vs. Miss. State and won’t play Thursday), No Barrett Jones.

Saban has no interest in running the score up late and I actually expect the Panthers to score a few late against the 2s and 3s of Alabama.

I’ll be there, will you? Go Panthers!

Jeff, once again you don’t know what you are talking about. That brick you refer to going thru Curry’s window, never happened. They found it couldn’t physically be done. His office was too high. He made up death threats at KY too. The problem was his Ky team stunk up the place.
He makes things up to divert attention from his poor coaching.
The Ga people were right about him the whole time.

I can remember when players played sixty minutes and Bear won with small and fast players. And so did Dodd. Bring back one patoon and limited substitutions. Syracuse won a national championship back then also.

David, you must be a bitter bug fan from North Ave! Please try to do some homework before you make any more idiotic statements. GSU is a FIRST YEAR PROGRAM at the FCS level and their schedule has been a perfect balance of easy games, competitive (but winnable) games and a game like Bama to bring in money and exposure to a new program. So please stop trolling every story that has anything to do with Coach Curry.

Actually, it’s you who should be ashamed, Buckeye. Until your team learns to beat teams from the SEC, I’d recommend taking your trash talk to a Michigan blog or something like that. What is OSU’s record in bowl games against the SEC again? 0 and… 13, or something like that? Oh, yeah, and one of those is a loss to Georgia.

Roll Panthers!!

I will say this about this weeks GSU opponent. Our former GSU president, Noah Langdale, was a Bama Lineman in the 60’s. Great man and school president. Also, Bama gave us the opportunity to play them and get some exposure. You know, the Bama alum and individuals associated with the university that I have known were first class people. GSU and Bama are excellent Universities. Thank you for the opportunity!

As a 1983 GSU alum, all we can ask is 100% for 60 minutes. Try to make it respectable. Make all of proud including Dr. Langdale.

Roll Panthers!!!
