Georgia Tech just as bad now as it was at Kansas

Anthony Allen and Georgia Tech looked outnumbered all day, particularly on the scoreboard. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

Anthony Allen and the rest of the Jackets looked outnumbered all day. (Johnny Crawford/AJC)

This isn’t to suggest that Georgia Tech suddenly is a football program without any hope for the future. But the team that was just dismembered by Miami — it looked no better than the one that was humiliated by Kansas two months ago.

That’s a problem.

Tackling isn’t any better. Blocking isn’t any better. Even the most basic of common-sense football moments — like, dude, the ball is on the ground, so fall on it — seem to leave players looking perplexed, like preschoolers trying to comprehend chemical engineering.

The Jackets lost to Miami at home 35-10 Saturday. Not only are the defending ACC champions not going back to the title game, they may not even go to a bowl game. They haven’t won a game since Middle Tennessee State on Oct. 16 (and we’ll let you decide how much that counts).

This performance was so bad, even the Independence Bowl scout left after the third quarter. How bad do you have to be for the guy from Shreveport to think, “You know, I really don’t need to meet the Georgia Tech coach after the game. I believe I’ll go watch Georgia and Auburn on TV.”

Just as well. Paul Johnson probably would’ve preferred to be somewhere else.

This makes three straight defeats for the Jackets, their longest skid since the end of 2006. Johnson hasn’t lost three straight games since he was in his first season at Navy in 2002. That’s when he lost 10 straight. The good news is: There’s only two games left on the schedule, so that infamous run won’t be matched.

“Nobody likes to lose,” Johnson said. “Trust me, I’m not used to it, either.

“There’s no magic wand. Hell, if I had a magic wand, I’d have used it at halftime. I wouldn’t save it for next week.”

Yeah, about next week: The Jackets (5-5) are still one victory short of being bowl eligible. Don’t presume the Duke game next week is a gimme. Duke scored 89 points in wins over Navy and Virginia in consecutive weeks. Tech’s defense? It just allowed five touchdowns, 507 yards and 24 first downs to a Miami offense that was using its backup quarterback.

So much for progress in the Al Groh defense.

It’s one thing to alibi for an offense that was missing its primary weapon, quarterback Joshua Nesbitt, at kickoff for the first time this season. But that doesn’t explain allowing the Hurricanes to drive 88 yards for touchdowns on each of their first two possessions.

It doesn’t explain Miami’s second possession, when a silly pass-interference penalty on third down kept a drive going and an offside penalty on a field-goal attempt gave the Hurricanes a first down at the Tech. Miami scored its second touchdown two plays later.

It doesn’t explain running back Orwin Smith fumbling a pitch in the third quarter, then standing there and looking at the ball, as if waiting for it to magically become airborne and float back down into his arms. (Miami recovered and drove to its fourth touchdown on the next possession to make it 28-10.)

When Tech tried to make a run, driving to a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half to close to 14-10, Miami answered in one play: a 79-yard touchdown pass to Leonard Hankerson (a busted coverage on a short toss over the middle).

Yes, the Jackets had built-in excuses for taking a step back this season. They lost four players to the NFL draft. But to lose to Kansas, to get dominated by an average Miami team — which lost to Virginia two weeks ago — and to suddenly have to scramble to avoid missing a bowl game for the first time since 1996 wasn’t expected.

“This really hurts, especially being a senior,” said cornerback Mario Butler, who drew the pass-interference call. “Time’s really winding down. … We had higher expectations.”

Johnson struggled to play the role of optimist: “We’ve still got a chance to salvage a winning season.”

But when a team is making the same mistakes in November that it was in September, it becomes clear that the light bulb just isn’t going on.

Well, Jeff, you’re not Barking Madly, but. . . .I can’t disagree. This season has been a hard pill to swallow. While it’s easy to second guess our coaches after game, I’m seeing the schemes that have players in position. It seems to be mental errors that have been affecting us this year. It also hurts us having inconsistent receivers. . . it doesn’t keep the D honest.

We have several things to work on, but I’ll wear my colors tomorrow, next week, and especially the week after.

THWG!

Thanks,

B.

Reality here — if we play like this against georgie, we’re gonna get LIT UP. Like, it may not even be fun for georgie fans because it’s such a blowout. We need to figure something out, and quick. 6 wins and we WILL, without a single question, go to a bowl. But is that really gonna happen at this point? Who knows….

Unfortunately, DRad didn’t learn from the Hewitt fiasco that you don’t give away long term contracts for one good season. He didn’t want Johnson to leave for Auburn. That is funny to think about now. The way that Georgia’s offense is playing tonight, we may give up 100 points to them with Groh’s horrible coaching. With Nesbitt out, there isn’t anyone left on the team playing with any heart now. It looks just like the Bill Lewis days.

I rarely leave a game early, but this year I have done it twice. We didn’t show up today or against NC State, so I left early in the fourth quarter. If the coaches can’t get the players to show up, why should the fans bother?

If Tech beats Duke then they will lose to UGA, but if Tech loses to Duke, they may beat UGA. I have a sad feeling that if Tech gets that sixth victory against Duke then they are gonna just put it on cruise control for the rest of the season. I never thought I would see a CPJ coached team play so miserably. You would think a TO O would be fundamentally sound with blocking and recovering fumbles.

Ummmmm…..okaaaaaay ! Miami spent the better of the season on the road taking everyone’s best shot and woke up late against a bottom dweller …fine. However it’s a damned better team that half-arsed garbage Johnson runs out week after week.

You brought a knife to gunfight and got smoked. If anything we should have laid 50 on that sorry collection. On Miami’s bad days they are still a helluva far better team than the Bumble-Bees.

It’s midnight and Cinderfella’s coach has turned back into a pumpkin, his/her footmen are shown up to be nothing but rats/mice and that glass-slipper (single-wing) offense has been shown to be nothing more than the plastic flip-flops it always was.

This was a joke of a showing and some top recruits were watching this crap. I saw several of them leave by the end of the 3rd quarter as well. Al Groh is a terrible DC and this team has no leadership AT ALL! NONE…ZERO!!! Kansas is by far the worst program in the big 12 and we couldn’t beat them. UNC is the only decent team we have beaten. we have lost our 4 and 5 stars, we beat Miami with Reggie Ball but we had Taschard Choice and Calvin Johnson. Some of these kids are doing the best they can and Tevin has done the best he can, reading the defense and knowing when to pitch and when not to comes with live games, Nesbitt started out slow as well, it took several games for Joshua to get comfortable. GT needs a handful of 4/5 stars again and it is that simple. Until they get them, they will continue to take a back seat to the Miamis, VT and Clemsons.

While I certainly hate to say it, the smoke and mirrors of this offense has now been figured out by the defenses of most of the teams we have faced this year. If this is the defense we now have as a result of the new defensive coordinator, the learnig curve has not translated into the effective read and react we should be seeing in game 10. The player “stars” have been Chan’s (ugh) players and not CPJ’s. All of this does not bode well for the future of GT football.

Ugly game today, we are just not good enough to make mistakes and then come back. This team has to play with a lead and not turn the ball over. Miami had a good plan, just run, run, run. They saw what we did against Va. Tech and they knew if they just kept busting us with the run we’d be suspect for a pass here and there. Now watch us spend all week practicing against the run, only to see a passing Duke team. We should beat Duke, but there’s no telling with this group.

last year, there was some spark to this offense (obviously the defense was horrible then too). there was a feeling that everytime we got the ball, the potential was there for us to go the distance and methodically march down the field and score. that’s just not here this year. for whatever reason.
in my opinion, the biggest problem the offense has is its line. it is AWFUL. the number of times tevin had no time today was unbelievable, and it’s been like that all year. i will support the heck out of this team still, but they just dont have that spark anymore—perhaps theyve lost confidence too

I am is disappointed and disgusted as just about every Tech fan, but please don’t say the typical, “Well, he (fill in the blank with the current coach) won with (fill in the name of the last coach), et., etc. ” If you have it one way as in when the new coach comes out of the gate winning and you don’t credit the previous coach fo having supplied the players, then how can you seriously say when the team loses that “Well, he only only with the previous coach’s players.” Come on. When a team deterioates like this, EVERYBODY has to share the blame. Let’s see what Johnson does in the next year or so. Hopefully, they will bring in some big, strong linemen who won’t be oerpowered on both lines of scrimmage. That’s the key. But in any case, win or lose, I will ALWAYS be a Georgia Tech fan!

when CPJ says there’s no magic wand, it’s that attitude of not reading the papers and what is being said about CPJ’s Tech program that is one of the criticisms I have about his coaching; if he read the comments here, he would come out with a better team; he always wants to serve only, and never let anyone help him do that; he doesn’t really learn from other people; he thinks he knows it all; his teams’ uniforms the past two years gotta be the dorkiest I’ve ever seen at Tech, almost as dorky as the ones that had the GTs the size of the GTs on the helmets that were worn at the hip area on the pants’ sides one year; his usage of color and patterns in Tech’s uniforms, or whoever is designing the uniforms, indicates a personality disorganization characteristic of someone who is on drugs; Tech’s just better than the uniforms they are forced to wear; why couldn’t CPJ stay with the old gold-striped uniforms of 3 years ago that were so popular they, in my opinion, were one of the prime reasons that got them to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl against LSU?; maybe the team just doesn’t want to play, and selects certain loser-looking uniforms before the season starts because they’re jealous of the mostly white student body who have much higher SAT scores than them, and will end up getting the high paying white collar jobs instead of the grueling NFL jobs the blacks get

I still can’t get over this uniform design stuff! I guarantee you if Tech was winning big like it did last year, you people wouldn’t care if Tech came out in pink leotards. And too, last year Johnson was absolutely revered with the way Johnson said stuff like, “Punch ‘em in the nose!” What a guy! What a coach. And now because we are losing, it’s suddenly, “Oooh, he doesn’t listen to anybody!” “Oh, if he read our comments, he wouldn’t blah-blah-blah.” I’ve had enough. I gotta go. And I will be at Grant Field next Saturday cheering for the Yellow Jackets!

This is the worst Tech team in the last 15 years…I’ll be the first to admit Paul Johnson did a great job the first 2 years, but with talent someone else recruited. The defense is horrific, Al Groh has been a diaster so far. If the best players on the team are on the field…well that’s says it all. This offense is boring as is his playcalling, and long term not the right offense to run at this level of college football. If it wassuch a great offense, other’s than just the service academies would be running it. Terrible coaching job this year, he should forfiet some of his pay for this pathetic performance!!

CPJ is exposed for the egotisitcl fraud he is. It is OBVIOUS the first two “winning” years were due to a) Gailey’s NFL players b) “newness” of a high school offense and c) a weak ACC … this is FIRST year we are seeing the “real CPJ” .. oh wait, let’s wait 10 years until he has “his” players; wow can’t wait for that; up there with watching paint dry.

The GT football product is just plain poor and boring. The alumni are already stirring. CPJ is an arrogant, “not to smart” Southerner whose act is going NOWHERE unless he wins.

My gut? .. He is gone by next year. Same path we went down with Gailey with the alumni.

Ok, that game was pretty bad, but what do you people expect? We’re without our 5 best players from last year, and down to the second string on half of the offensive line. Now I’ll admit that I’d expect to see more effort, but I think the problem is that we have so many new and young players in the game that they’re spending all of their time trying to figure out what to do rather than just playing hard. Our defense isn’t any good, but it wasn’t any good last year either even with Morgan and Burnett. Our offense has a quarterback starting his first game, the second-string center and guard, our only athletic wide receiver can’t catch a cold, and we’ve got true freshmen rotating in at A-back. I don’t expect much this season, but I’m betting it will start clicking midway through next season and we’ll have at least 2 good years following that where we’re “dominant” again. We’re going through a slump that happens when you lose your 5 best players early and have nobody to replace them. I’ll keep cheering and hoping, and they’ll get it turned around as Johnson’s recruits get older and more experienced.

The offense gained more than enough yards to win the game. The problem was all the mistakes. Its like the kids aren’t even thinking. Wherever the problem lies, it needs to be corrected before next Saturday. I don’t expect CPJ to be going anywhere for at least 2 more seasons. If 2011 doesn’t show improvement and the team doesn’t challenge for the title in 2012, thne I agree, Tech will be searching for a new coach. Until then Johnson needs to be given the opportunity to build this program. He has won the ACC Championship and taken the team to a BCS game. Lets see what the future holds. I don’t see the team in Athens being world beaters either and who knows the lost to Auburn may leave them with a hangove of “the who cares?”

We suck. And this loss goes to COJ not Tevin Washington who gave us all we would have gotten from Nesbitt plus some passing. Johnson’s two bonehead calls for the toss sweep on critical 4th downs when they had been stopping was plain stupid. Give the ball to Allen up the middle he always gets a yard or two which is all we needed. Until Johnson incorporates some short passes to backs coming out of the backfield on misdirection fakes nothing will change. I bet we lose to Duke and the Dawgs put up 30 before halftime, If we do become bowl eligible we should turn it down, unless its the toilet bowl!!!!!!! GROH has got to go….John Tenuta where are you?

It is really hard to watch this program go downhill so fast. The coaches seem to be more focused on their scheme on offense and now defense than in designing a game plan to the talent and the weakness of the opponent. When Johnson came in he inherited the best recruiting class of the last 30 years, they were said to not fit the new system, but because of talent and heart – we won. We now seem to have no talent, leadership, or heart – I will always be a GT fan, but this is tough to watch – the buck stops with the coaches – we have two games left to at a minimum show some heart and urgency.

It’s easy to see against good teams that we are undermanned with the roster that Tech has this year. Heart can only take you so far. We need talent. Tech is overmatched against most of their opponents this year. They will have to recruit better. By the way, we will not have much success in our 3-4 defense if we don’t have strong, physical guys that can push the lineman back. We are giivng good quarterbacks way too much time to pass or run. That spells defeat everytime. Maybe next year!

Ramblinwreck’s epistles are absolutely correct. Ga Tech ths year on both offense and defense is about as poorly coached teams as one can see on a football field. CPJ should concede the last two games and save the fans from being anymor embarassed. When you buy tickets you expect your team to at least mentally show up for the game and demonstrate some physical effort. But, this year we certainly have not got our money’s worth at any game. Hey. all you band wagon flunkies out there, the reality is that right now, yes, Tech is not very good. But CPJ can’t actually go out there and do the plays himself. He has stated before and I 100% agree with him, in that, you can coach a player up all day but if THAT PLAYER doesn’t go out and execute the play then yes, the team is going to suck. I don’t fault CPJ at all. For me, I fault the three idiots that left for the NFL last year that had no business going, i.e. Dwyer, Burnett and Thomas. Dwyer was hurt half of last season, Burnetts play dropped from the 2008 season and Thomas, although a good receiver, wasn’t earth shattering or spectacular. They all followed the money. Which of course, you can’t fault them, but neither of them had earth shattering seasons in 2009.
The rest of the blame, I place on our piss poor defense! I’m not necessarily blaming Al Grogh-YET; however, if he is going to get defensive players to be in his 3-4 scheme, he better damn well get players that don’t try to arm tackle every play and don’t CONSTANTLY blow coverages.
After watching Miami’s first two drives, the whole Tech defense may as well have been on the sidelines b/c the only thing that would have stopped or slowed down Miami is the fact they were too slow running to the end zone.
It’s no mystery to CPJ that his team is mediocre AT BEST right now. He is intelligent enough to get Tech back to where it needs to be. Yes, Nesbitt going down was a HUGE hit for Tech, but good teams find ways to win games they have no business winning. Also, the one silver lining in the cloud we have is the fact that at least Tevin Washingtn is getting some very good and much needed game experience in before next season. I believe he will become just as good as Nesbitt. I already believe he is a much better passer than Nesbitt. He just needs to work on his timing and game rhythm. The triple option is a timing offense and it’s success is determind on how quick you make your reads on defense. Once he gets these things down, I think he will be a helluva QB.
So relax guys!! Raise your hand if you said, “Oh, crap, Nesbitt is out, we will still have a great season”..???? That’s what I thought. I’m a football realist and I feel that Tech will finish with a 7-5 record probably. They will beat Duke out of sheer frustration. The UGA(Y) game will be a toss up but b/c it will be in Athens, the advantage has to go to UGA(Y). But remember Tech did win there in CPJ first season, so it could probably go either way, b/c UGA(Y) sucks this year too. We’ll be bowl eligible and probably head to Boise again and as for winning, it depends on who we play.
Even if we finish 5-7, don’t get down on everything. Give Washington some time and pray that our inept receivers grow a pair of hands over the next year. Our biggest concern is our defense and if it sucks as much next year as it did this year, I say can Al Grogh’s butt. I have NOT been impressed this year other than a few key stops we mad last week at VT.

Tech’s as bad now as it was in Gailey’s worst years and O’leary’s first two 95-96. Why? It’s defenses need to be tougher, faster and more aggressive, and athletic. It’s offense needs to be able to come from behind in the air at the end. Tech needs to recruit wider. Ross use to say I won’t take B player from this state basically if I can get an A player from another state, or maybe O’leary said it but it worked with them recruiting wise as their classes were in top 35- 40 range year end and year out.

The players will get to his standard. He has won 25 games at GT…25 games at GT in his first three seasons. Good stuff.

It should be understood that the triple option is a tactic he deploys. It is not the reason for his success as a leader.

Hey things do cycle up and down with most programs, but some have said that Gailey could recruit and Johnson can coach, but cannot bring the level of talent into the program that Gailey could. That’s yet to be proven, but don’t think that Tech (or any school including the Gators), can lose the number of players to the NFL they did without a fall off the next year. The thing to watch for is year 5 is whether the team goes back up or stays down, and if they stay down look for another head coach. I love the option, just need playmakers, CPJ can coach but he needs players that perform, rarely recall Dwyer ever fumbling the ball ..do not think this defense is going to work out under this coach but our offense couldn’t do much either this season

To the so called CPJ hating GT Alumni on this blog. You are disrespecting yourselves and the rest of the GT Nation. Stop glorifying the Gailey years. They were bad, real bad. I was there, I know.

CPJ has given real hope to the Alum so stop spouting your drivel. We are finally excited about what is being built at GT and you guys should shut it and start helping.

I like CPJ but do not think this defense is going to work out, btw, did VA ever beat Miami or VT when Groh was coach? I know Jon Tenuta beat Miami when he was def coordinator at GT several times. Still wish GT could bring him back. I know CPJ hates to lose and will make changes before next season. Beating Duke is not a done deal. I remember in 08 when Nesbitt was hurt and Shaw played against Duke and won. Where he is now? Oh yeah that’s right, Monken had to lure the kid away so they could beat App St.

People really need to stop pretending that Gailey was a great recruiter. Lets look at his recruiting prowess:

2002: 51st
2003: 34th
2004: 35th
2005: 48th
2006: 49th
2007: 15th

Avg: 39th

One decent recruiting class. He was not the world class recruiter that people on here make him out to be.

I will be a Jacket man come hell or high water-have been fro over 50 years. Paul Johnson is a football coach. We wil;l never do any better than him. This offense he runs leads the Nation in rushing. Rushing teams control the clock. Our Defense needs a ton of work. Too many missed assignements and tackles. This is not Grogh’s fault, but a lack of effort on the players side. The loss to Kansas was just too p[ainful to watch. Butmaybe the next two games will turn us around. A win at Athens will be worth all the other lossses. So get behind them and don’t be like a bunch od Dawg whiners.

Sautee Dawg

What a bunch of turncoats. Last season it was, CPJ, CPJ, CPJ, the greatest mastermind of college football with his triple headed running attack. Now like the Dawgs your having a bad season and you give up on the coach.
I hate the Dawgs are having a poor season and hate the Jackets are too, but I’ll say the same for you Jacket fans as I did for our Dawg fans.
These coaches and players haven’t forgotten how to coach and the players haven’t forgotten how to play.
Each team is lacking team leadership from the players, someone to step up on each side of the ball and make sure players are taking care of their assingments, A team captain if you will. .
ACC and SEC are both on a downslide this season, hell even the Texas machine who never loses more than 1 game a season is having the same problems.
One thing we all should remember is all these young men are simply that. “Young Men” 19 to 21 year olds that need our support not our complaints.
As a Ga Tech friend of mine said last week. This years Ga. Tech vs UGA will be each teams Bowl game. And that is what makes college football fun.
Sometimes you just have to tip your hat to the oppisition as we did with Auburn yesterday.
Auburn had the better team and in the end it showed.
Same with Miami,
Good luck with Duke next week and the following week I’ll be between the hedges barking at you.
One thing you can always bet on in life and in sports.
People need support when they deserve it the least.
So quit whinning and support your team and coaches.

I think all the whiner “fans” need to take a step back here, inhale and chill…

The fact is , this years GT team is just not very good. Maybe it senior leadership (or lack thereof) ,maybe its just that their potential and talent was overrated but more likely its just a combination of the two ,with some bad luck thrown in to make the season package complete.Either way ,it’s NOT coaching. You people that are writing about CPJ are UGA people hoping to get some kind of wave going against a fantastic coach. Believe me,you have your own house to clean.

To true GT fans here: Get behind CPJ and write this year off as a rebuilding project. This man can build a dynasty here-If we are smart enough to let him.Do you want to go back to the old days ? Do you want another retread like Chan Gailey telling us that there is no way to win here ? Didn’t think so.

Every now and then ,you just have a bad year. deal with it.

One bright spot: Tevan Washington. Threw some nice passes, made several good decisions with the ball. I was pleasantly surprised by his level of play. On defense, we are just getting blocked it’s as simple as that. Miami must have gained 100 yards running the fullback isolation play off tackle. Seal the tackle, double the nose and the fullback blocks the linebacker. Tech couldn’t stop it. That’s football 101. If you can’t stop that play, you can’t win. I don’t care who is coaching. And guess what Georgia’s favorite play is?

My first Tech game was in 1959, when Maxie Baughn led Tech against a suprtalented UGA squad that included Tarkenton and Billy Payne. GA won 21-14, but Tech fought like hell though they were badly overmatched. Today’s Tech players cannot carry the shoes of the real men who played that day. They have no class at all. I saw them out there wearing the same uniforms as the 1990 team. The resemblance stopped there. No effort at all. Horrible coaching. The whole staff should resign. Al Groh is a joke, but not a funny one. Fire him today and let Shirley Franklin coach the defense for the last two games.

Johnson is doing an awful job. Any recruits he signs are those who only the Vanderbilts and Indianas are interested in. He never gets top players. Ask him why and he acts like he does not care. He acts like “we will take who we get and make them into what we want them to be.”

And the penalties! Is it possible that at Navy and Ga. Southern he had players who were smart enough to comprehend the offense, make the blocks and remain set til the ball is snapped and at Tech he does not? I guess that is the case.

I remember a few years ago UGA fans were suggesting that we were done for as a top level program and that we should de-emphasize football and play in the Southern conference. They might have been right.

Sure, UGA lost a painful game last night, and I was pleased to see that. But they TRIED the best they could against a superior team. I definitely admired them for that. Players and coaches, they went there to win. That is the difference between Tech and UGA football. At UGA they care, and they go all out. Our players dont give a damn. They ought to dump the whole team off scholarship and start over with walkons.

1. Beating Duke will be difficult, but it is our ONLY hope of another win this year. Magic wand or not, Johnson has one week to find some solutions.
2. Beating Tech is UGA’s only hope of extending their bowl streak and possibly needed to save one or more their coaches’ jobs. They WILL be extra motivated (as if they need it).
3. UGA has a bye week and will be rested, ready and at home when we limp in. I’m not looking forward to Thanksgiving weekend (other than maybe getting a deal on a new TV).
4. Throwing Johnson and his offense under the bus is stupid and premature. What we’ve seen this year is NOT the totality of this offense. It DOES include a passing option but Nesbitt and our corps of receivers were incapable of executing that part of it.
5. The issues this year have been the lack of talent on the field. Complain about Groh and his scheme if you wish, but no scheme can overcome players who can’t execute basics (i.e., tackling).
6. The remaining question is “can Johnson and his staff restock the program with athletes capable of executing with passion, energy and enthusiasm EVERY game?” This was his third year, traditionally the fourth year is the year that a coach’s transition is deemed to be complete. I doubt that there is a store of redshirts that are coming in next year to make a difference (or CPJ would have abandoned the redshirts and brought them in this year). That means that we’d better attract some high impact freshmen and do some serious coaching of the talent that we have left.

Bottom line….it’s ugly RIGHT NOW. Johnson has a track record of winning and he’s accomplished some good things in his first two years. DRAD and the rest of the administration better step back and take a very critical look at the product that we field next year and be ready to take action in one direction or the othe based on the results. If the results aren’t there, we can’t afford to hesitate in pulling the trigger. Georgia Tech can’t withstand 3 (or more down years). This season is strike one. Will next season be strike two?

You Gailey people are pathetic. I thought Gailey was a very good man but if I had to watch another 3-6 ACC Championship Game against WAKE FOREST and we had CALVIN JOHNSON, well I was going to puke. Thank God I don’t have to watch that crap anymore. If you threw jump balls to Calvin on every play, I assure you that is worth at least 14 points a game.

turnovers penalties

November 14th, 2010

I can stomach someone beating us man-up. While trying to give Miami all the credit in the world….GT extended the first two drives on penalties when they had Miami stopped. So you take off 11 of the first 14 points (assuming Miami did make that 41 yard fied goal).

Then you pick up the fumble inside their 10 yard line and we at least put 3 more on the board. That’s Miami 24 GT 13. Coulda, woulda, shoulda….

Crap, who am I kidding? We flat out stink whether it’s shooting ourselves in foot w/ stupid penalties, turnovers…whatever…… I’ve run out of excuses and I’m tired of seeing this GT team beat themselves week after week. STUPID PENALTIES AND TURNOVERS!!!!

I never remember the state of football being this bad at both schools the same year like this year. Georgia was beat by a College Park kid yesterday. I wonder if you couldn’t put together an all Georiga team that went out of state to school and beat both our state schools this year. Somehow we are calling not so talented, talented, in our in state recruiting, and the very talented are being discovered by out of state coaches right under our noses. One school Tech, can’t get all it goes after and the other gets what it goes after and then finds it has made an awful marriage. Tech lost yesterday because it couldn’t man up, and for a school that has a handicap of high academic entry some of its players are flunking football 101 on assignments. I think they will do OK with Duke because Duke can’t man up either but if Tech is going to recruit dumb players you might as well be like Georgia and at least substitute some talent for the brains you are not getting. I think Johnson unlike Richt can coach talent if he ever get any.

I also think Groh brings that losing atmosphere to Tech from his Virginia days. The defense was not biting the bite to get at Miami. These ex pro coaches do not do much for college football. They see this game as a business not a passion. In some cases as in the USC deal, that business goes further than just drawing a paycheck, Where pro football and college meets is the border of a lot of college footballs problems. A man that has become accustomed to coaching players being paid either in college or pros loses his feel for the game and knowing what buttons to press to motivate his players. Paul Johnson is a college football for life very much what Spurrier found about himself when he ventured off the reservation a few years ago. We need more like Johnson even if he is having a bad year.

I wasn’t expecting too much this season but was really disappointed yesterday by lack of effort from some players, with Butler being the main offender. He made no attempt whatsoever to look at the ball when defending a long pass in the red zone – none – resulting in a clear pass interference call. He made no attempt to block his man on a punt return – an embarrassment to his coaches. I would bench his backside next week as a message to a few others who have given up on the season. I came away thinking that it may be the time to put a few new faces in the line-up next week. There are some positive signs that Washington will be a more than solid replacement for Nesbitt but a few more diamonds are needed to replicate last year’s success and go on to the levels of athleticism seen in the SEC and they won’t be found by sticking with players suffering from delusions of adequacy.

I still think a match between the Gators and Jackets would be interesting, kind of reliving 1967. I have seen time to time how the coaches since 1967 compared to Dodd and they don’t. Except the last 6 years, Dodd’s success was against the mighty SEC not the ACC, and yeah he was a personal friend of Bear, Butts and McClendon. That’s special even by today’s successful coach’s standards, but I think he would have like CPJ and his style of smash mouth rushing attack, remembering his last great team was an option tandem of Snow and King.

Did someone mention “high academic recruiting?” Apparently that doesn’t include our football and basketball players. We use special admissions to get them in and then wonder why they continue to make stupid mistakes. Could the answer be that too many of them are stupid? Grade inflation: eliminate bad grades, have high percentage on the honor rolls (one school just had 22 valedictorians!),have Education majors teach math/science (Your math assignment is to underline the number 22),change the SAT scoring ,falsify test scores—–after all,we don’t want anybody to lack self-esteem! coach pj has 2 awesome years and this year is a down year and all you bandwagon fans are saying coach pj isnt the best coach we thought we had,,,, well let me tell you ssomething noone was saying that last year or the year before, its obvious coaches coach and players play, its simple our player are not that talented and their not executing the tripple option right look at navy they have no talent and they run the tripple option with great execution and they win 8 games every year, you people are idiots, with a new coach it usually takes 5 years to see the rseults we have seen in the last 2 years.

joeygt—- I like you…..All you nay-sayers and disbeleivers were on the bandwagon last year.Where are you now?I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Paul Johnson yet.Look at yesterdays game and I think you will see that we were in it until the stupid mistake on Smiths fumble. That let the air out of our baloon.I have not given up on Paul Johnson or GT like some of you have.Kind of reminds me of UGA fans.Thank GOD that congress didn’t give up on Coach Washington at the first sign of trouble.

Tron 5000 nailed it with his comment…”we suck”…yes you do Georgia Tech…live with it…last year was a freak…you are nothing more than a very average football program…you are not elite and never will be…your former AD was correct in what he said about it not being realistic to expect 9 wins a year and he got run out for stating the truth…the truth hurts Georgia Tech and you have to live with that.

UGA will focus on the last game of the Richt era

November 14th, 2010
12:05 pm

UGA haters …………you were right about UGA for 2010 …………we DO stink. I will say it again, my alma mater, UGA does stink in big boy ball.

The good news is this:
1.) The Richt era will be over or in 2011 it will be over.
2.) GT is not big boy ball. Y’all are more like a Navy or a Furman or a Ga Southern ( GT made in the eyes of the creator ) and the AC is systemically awful.

UGA will roll ove GT. It will be ugly. I predict a 48-20 thang with Johnson screaming into the unnerved faces of the players. He will be cursing and yelling and seemingly coming un glued. Why?

He knows that he is again losing to Mark Richt ……….. a coach whose time and come and gone. Richt’s record vs small ball GT will be 9-1 and that will make UGA like 12-4 over the last 16 years and more like 18-6 over the last 20 and something like 45-10 over my lifetime.

Go Dogs.

PS: GT goes through a new football coach every 3.5 years counting Bobby Dodd since 1967.
Bill Fulmer, Lewis, Ross, Carson, O’Leary, Pepper Rogers (cold cocked on nation wide TV with my head phones and fell to my knees) and Curry ( let us pray to leave for Alabama) and CPJ and Chan the Man, and simply too many more to name.

CPJ by next October will be right at 3.5 years ……………another 6-6 year in 2011 and he will be gone bye bye ……….. right on schedule.

Get ready GT ………………. Athens is awaiting. See you at the fabulous Indigo Hotel, where your dreams might come true, like meeting a CHi Omega or a Tri Delta. Don’t count on it.

There are too many negative comments here. Jacket fans should keep the following points in mind:

1. We lost our best player and leader against VT when we had the lead and a good shot at repeating as ACC Champs.

2. Our back-up QB, Washington, is young and inexperienced, but is showing signs of becoming a great one.

3. If Tech had avoided two key mistakes, the momentum and complexion of the game may have been quite different:

a. Butler made a bad decision on the pass interference call. A completion would have bee short of the first down & Miami would have had to punt. Instead they scored.

b. Orrin Smith should have quickly fallen on the ball instead of thinking about picking it up when Tech had first on goal on the 6 yard line.

4. Tech’s defense played well against VT and seemed to be catching on to Groh’s system. While they played poorly on Miami’s first two drives, they made adjustments and played pretty well until the momentum shifted later.

5. If Johnson and Groh can fix the problems above and others Tech should beat Duke which is playing better.

6. If Tech beats Duke and looks good doing so, they have a great shot at a revenge win against the dawgs who may be without their QB, Murray.

KEEP THE FAITH!!

UGA will focus on the last game of the Richt era

November 14th, 2010

A couple of facts babout this year’s UGA/GT game:

1.) Aaron Murray was not on the playing field last year. He is superior to the QB who did play.
2.) Kris Durden is UGA’s Go To receiver. HE is the TOP Dog. HE can mke the big play and HE did not play vs GT in 2009.
3.) AJ Green is the # Two wide out on UGA’s squad and he is fairly dependable ( selling articles of clothing or as a receiver) and he did not play in 2009. HE wants to go out with a bang and he will be in a punishing mindset with the GT corners.
3.) UGA’ s D is far,far superior, at least in mind set, than the UGA D of 2009 and the 2010 stats show it.
4.) The UGA entire team knows that Mark Richt could be and hopefully will be coaching his last UGA game. I pray that this is his last uGA game.
5.) The UGA fans will be waiting for GT and CPJ and they will talk all week and into next week about this ugly, ugly year and about PUNISHING GT for the mistake of having defeated UGA there in 2008. They want a scalp.

GO Dogs.

I don’t know if we will beat UGA, but know we will beat Duke and be bowl eligible. Although UGA is pathetic, GT isn’t much better. Al Groh’s 3-4 D is pathetic. At this point, I am hoping UGA beats themselves, or half the team is out because of stealing scooter helmets, playing with red panties, or selling jerseys.

Don’t mess with the Canes. Should’ve been alot worse than it was girls. Paul Johnson’s offense can’t play with the big boys. And your defense can’t stop a basic off tackle run.

UGA really sucks bad and GT isn’t much better, but if UGA has to win the game to be bowl eligible, which they do, GT has something to play for and will come ready to go. Hey Jimmy! Do you think UGAG will have enough players eligible to play the last game of the year? I mean, you have a week off for additonal arrests. Maybe, Midget Murray steals some school books are something and AJ Green sells another jersey, or your new AD gets caught with his pants down with some nasty red panties. I don’t think UGA is any better than GT, as they both suck. However, if we come prepared Roddy Jones will torch your D for another 214 yards. Heck, I think he’s still running from 2 years ago. Welcome to no bowl for the muttts. By the way, your basketball team looked great the other night winning by 2 against MSVS. Wow, all the high expectations in hoops and football, but in reality your teams suck.

I did not expect much out of this game with our backup QB getting his first start, but there are some positives…

Al Groh has said, he does not have the bodies he wants yet for the 3-4, but nevertheless we are used to not having a defense and I think we are and will improve here.

To those saying people have figured out CPJ’s rushing attack. We put up over 400 yards on the best Defense in the ACC…. all of this with our backup QB getting his first start.

We can not drop the ball anymore than we have this year…. look at UGA 2 years ago and how many “DROPS” AJ Green had….. The passing game will get better and Washington getting playing time now will help for next year.

As far as the UGA game goes… it will be tough for us to stop them…. but their defense looks confused 90% of the time and when you look at their true yards per play allowed stat, they are much worse than 2008 and 2009. I think CPJ will take advantage of this. The question is can we execute.

And that is why we have not turned the corner this year… we can’t execute (i.e. Catch the ball, avoid the red zone turnovers, punch it into the inzone, costly penalties…) Things such as this can’t get any worse.

Looking towards a bright future for the Yellow Jackets!

As a Tech fan, I have to disagree with Schultz. Tech is worse than it was against Kansas. Tech is simply outmanned up front on both sides of the ball. Especially on defense. Groh better put up his best scheme against UGA or it will be ugly. Stopping Greene is job enough, but stopping him along with Charles, Durham, the UGA RB’s, the screen package, Murray breaking out of the pocket, etc. etc. is going to be a monumental task for GT’s undersized and overmatched defense. I think Tech will move the ball and score, but doubt it can come close to matching the scoring from the UGA offense. Perhaps the Jackets can get the Blue Devils. Who knows ? Tech should be getting about 13 pts. or more next week in Vegas.

I’m amazed at how cocky most Cane fans are…still to this day. Hey Jack_in_Homestead, FL, GT is 10-6 overall against your precious canes, even after yesterday’s loss. Tech’s defense looked pathetic, but this offense (also playing a backup QB) rolled up over 400 yards on your vaunted D, so I’d think twice about talking trash. Oh, and Shannon’s decision to go for it on 4thd down to score a TD with less than 4 minutes to go in the game was a classless move. If he kicks a field goal, UM goes up by 21, so either way GT’s out of it. If he remains the coach at Miami, which may be doubtful, he needs to remember one thing; payback’s a bitch!

The problem isn’t the scheme, it’s the lack of talent on the field to run the scheme. If CPJ doesn’t show signs of recruiting/judging talent better very quickly, then it’s either time for the relationship to end or time to drop down to I-AA. There are moments when this team looks Lewis’ era bad, not just Gailey era incredibly mediocre.

I went purely to see Washington and I thought he was great. Interesting how Tech lost decidedly even when the quarterback played well. It shows the problems are mostly defensive. We miss the big plays and breakaway runs that seem to have eluded us. We drive down and have a misplay by Smith, but Oran Smith played a great game other than the miscue. Hats off to Washington and O. Smith.

I agree that the showing yesterday was awful, but you bandwagon idiots remember your words. Remember them. This is not the end of the world. Oh, and Jackwagons, I don’t think the defenses of other teams have “figured the TO out.” It’s a game of numbers on offense versus numbers on defense. I guess they have figured out the spread that every other team runs as well? Amazing. Just because this defense is unique, AND HISTORICALLY EFFECTIVE, wow, they must have figured it out. The thing is that all of you bandwagoneers, even 20 year season ticket holder, were spoiled early with 9-4 and 11-3 seasons right out of the chute. CPJ will get it under control. Be angry about the coaching, playing, etc., but for God’s sake, spare us the idiocity of “everyone has figured it out.” You sound like a UGA fool. Frankly, Tech’s performance this season doesn’t bother half as much as what has happened in the stands. I’ve seen a lot of Tech teams come and go, some bad and some good. But through it all, I was always able to sit with my friends and enjoy myself, no matter how bad things might be on the field.

Enter DRad. In one stroke, he eliminated stadium reseating and the points system in favor of the Tech Fund. The block of people I used to sit with has scattered, and now there’s no way to recreate another block. After this season, the GTAA is going to have a hard time filling seats next year, and alumni donations are lower now with the Tech Fund than they were with the A-T Fund. And because of DRad’s policies, there is zero incentive on my part to buy season tickets again next year – me, and a lot of other people. After all, why bother to be a loyal buyer in bad seasons, when you know you can buy your way right back into equivalent seats again anytime you want to?

DRad is a better AD than Braine, but’s that’s damning with faint praise. DRad still hasn’t figured out that supply exceeds demand for Tech football. A seat license works for teams with statewide fan bases. Georgia Tech isn’t one of those teams.

The GTAA is going to have some serious financial issues to deal with next year. I hope DRad enjoys the consequences of his decisions.

Wow, I’m really surprised at people throwing CPJ under the bus. First and foremost- I think CPJ is accountable, just like others have said on this posting.

I think a HUGE problem is Defense.. HUGE HUGE HUGE! Wow, sloppiest, most boring game of football I have ever seen. What is it about Tech that they can’t get it together??? While my husband thinks good ol’ Al is great on Defense- I say they look like crap, play like crap, and are still missing tackles left and right.

Oh, and another thing: Someone PLEASE put Hill on defense instead of offense? Sure, he can get some air- but does he EVER come down with the ball? No.. but I’m sure he’d be good at breaking up some passes and taking out the other teams WRs. And maybe, just MAYBE he may come down with an interception.

This team has too much talent to be playing like preschoolers on the playground.

Do you know why we watch college versus Pro? It’s because in College, there is more HEART in the game!!!

But you wouldn’t know it watching this team. Sure, I miss BeBe and Dwyer, Derrick Morgan, etc… but we’ve got a job to do!

Now GT is royally screwed. We’ll go play a half-hearted game against Duke.. and then? On to Athens to get stomped? AGAIN. How many times can this team humiliate themselves? It’s a NIGHT start, with UGA playing for bowl eligibility. You know they will be fighting. GT will now be synonamous with one word (Again): Losers.

When are you going to learn he couldn’t make it in the Pro’s and didn’t make it at Va. You cannot take young kids and put them in a 3/4 defense. You have to have speed, nose tackle etc. Al if you want to run a 3/4 go back to the Pros. If CPJ doesn’t wake up and quite running the triple option he should be gone to. How many teams in the top 25 use the triple option (none). Predications, beat Duke by 10 and lose to Georgia by 14. A good thing did come out of Sat.game. T. I have been a GT fan foe over 50 years, and for the first time I have to say that I am embarrassed to be a fan. I also do not think that Tech should go to a bowl, because a bowl should be EARNED, AND THIS SEASON, TECH HAS EARNED ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. It is right up there with the UGA season. They likewise do not deserve a bowl game, because they have not earned squat this season. The game should be played on Thanksgiving, because it will be the “Turkey Bowl”.
