Don't expect the Bulldogs to remain scoreless for long today against Idaho State.
ATHENS — Welcome to Hangover Week. Most of us just lie on the couch. Georgia plays Idaho State.
Seriously, this was intended to be Relax and Rejoice Week. When the schedule was made, the Bulldogs’ hope was that they would be coming off a victory over Florida and would use this Division 1-AA (FCS) opponent as a relative bye week before having to go to Auburn, as it looked to secure a spot in the SEC title game.
The only thing that held form was that this game still should be a walkover. Idaho State isn’t even a good Division 1-AA team. The Bengals won their season opener over Montana-Western (an NAIA school with an enrollment of 1,290). But they’ve lost seven straight since. They’re 3-32 since October of 2007. They’re 1-14 against Division 1 (FBS) opponents since 2000.
In other words, don’t expect any drama today. Georgia not only should win but should be able to flood the field with backups by the second quarter. It would be surprising if No. 2 quarterback Hutson Mason didn’t play half the game.
The bigger question about the Dogs is the mindset from this game forward. They played poorly at the outset last week against Florida, then fought back from a 21-7 halftime deficit to tie it in the fourth quarter, only to lose in overtime, 34-31.
That leaves them 3-4 in the SEC and 4-5 overall, which means hopes for an SEC East title or an upper-tier bowl game are cooked. They would have to win their final three games (Idaho State, at Auburn, Georgia Tech) to have any shot at a good bowl like the Chick-fil-A.
More likely, they are headed for the Birmingham or Liberty bowl (the last two in the SEC pecking order). That’s assuming they go anywhere. They need two more wins just to qualify but that seems more likely now that Tech quarterback Joshua Nesbitt is out after suffering a broken arm Thursday night at Virginia Tech.
Back to the mindset thing: How the Dogs play these last few weeks could indicate more about next season than this one. If they play hard, smart and show some resolve, it’s a positive sign. If not, it leads to more questions about the program’s direction going into the offseason.
Finally, a word about coach Mark Richt. As much as his future has been debated in blogs and on message boards, I still don’t believe he’s on the firing line. Now, that could change in the next few games. But my sense of the situation right now is the same as it was before the season — that if the Dogs had a bad season (and this is a bad season), Richt would be on the so-called “hot seat” next year.
The only way I see that changing is there’s a complete implosion in the last three games. Again, that’s just my opinion. As always, I welcome yours.
I’ll be back shortly to start live blogging. Meanwhile, about that hangover: Has anybody ever run into Mike Tyson after too many beers?

High scoring game for the Dogs, but what else is new. Other large compettive programs are now in the meat of their schedule jockeying for BCS points, while UGA continues to pay small programs large sums or money so UGA can get a win.
The game today is pathetic.

Unless the Dogs get blown out in all 3 of the last 3 games, Richt will be back.
I expect the Dogs to lose the last 3, but to be comeptitive.
Alabama lost to Lousisiana Monroe the 1st year plugging in the 3-4 in 2007, so I think the Dogs lose a close 1 today to Idaho State, 21-14. Murray turns the ball over 3 times today.
Lose again to Georgia Tech, by just 10. Defense can’t stop the run
Lose to Auburn by 14. Murray has another bad day. Secondary gets burned, Newton goes for 400 yards of offense.
Looking at 4-8, losing 6 games by a touchdown or less.
Like the 2007 Alabama team.

The Reporter: Mr. McGarity, why will UGA increase the FCS schools that it plays ?
Greg: We need to make more money, the extra home game makes big bucks. A large portion of that goes to clean up the trash that our loyal fans leave on campus.
To help instill a sense of cleanliness among our fans we are replacing the DUI video ( it didn’t work, anyway ) with this new video. We might also change our mascot to the Native Americans.

Unfortunately, Richt seems determined to stay with beleagured Aaron Murray, no matter how bad the kid plays (last weeks’ 4 TO’s, exhbit A).
We can only think of how much better the season coud have gone with Logan Gray or Hutson Mason at QB, but it is what it is.
Lemay will be here soon to save the day. Only 3 more games with the worst QB Richt has ever had.

Not just talking about UGA but I wonder if these weak games, stuck on everybody’s schedule, don’t upset the flow of teams? They basically get a week off, so they can take it easy, but once you’ve tuned it down a notch, it’s hard to turn it back up to the level of real competiton. Oh well, doesn’t really matter as long as everybody is making money, except the players, of course.

Stadium should be about half full today. You can bet Richt will try to run up the score and Grantham will be giving out choke signs. GA has beaten LA Lafayette, Vanderbilt, KY, and the worst TN team in memory. This program has hit rock bottom, and there is no evidence that it will improve in the near future.

I agree that Richt is probably safe this year. We should beat Idaho State and Tech, but I see no way we beat Auburn. I do believe next year, Richt will be on the hot seat. He’s going to have to produce. The program has been going down hill since Van Gorder left, and Richt is going to have to prove he can right the ship. It remains to be seen whether Grantham can do the DC job, and it’s possible Richt will need to bring in a top fight offensive coordinator and either fire or demote Bobo. I think he needs to realize he is not only fighting to bring the Dawgs back to respectability, but he is also fighting for his job.

To pin even one iota of blame on Murray is pathetic and hopefully, Greg, you’re either a fan of another school or just really that stupid. This kid is a winner. I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?
As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.
Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.
So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

Alabama finished #28 in scoring defense in 2007, and #31 in total defense in 2007, in Saban’s 1st year installing the 3-4.
Georgia’s ranked #23 in scoring defense, and #38 in total defense in Grantham’s 1st year installing the 3-4.
Saban gave up 21 points and almost 300 yards against La Monroe in the 11th game back in 2007, which Alabama lost, althought they were heavy favorites, so I expect Grantham to do the same.
People don’t realize how hard it is running the complex 3-4, in your 1st season, with the wrong type of body types.
Saban went 7-6 in 2007 at Alabama in his 1st season putting in the 3-4.
Just growing pains.

Schultz,
I think Richt will resign after this season-couple reasons why I fell this way.
1) His loyalty to his coaches will make it almost impossible for him to make a major change.I feel the Martinez deal is still on his mind.
2) I believe the mess that this program is in at this time is way to big for him to want to dig out of it.At some point even the best know when a mountain cant be climbed.
3) I think the pressure has gotton to him and I dont see the Alumni support for him increasing. In fact I believe it will decrease drastically as we end the season.
4) To many player issue’s,arrest, turmoil. Nice guys finish last.

If Grantham holds Idaho State to less than 21, and less than 280 yards, believe it or not, he outcoached what Saban did against La Monroe in Saban’s 1st year with the 3-4 at Alabama.
But I don’t think Grantham can do that, surely Grantham isn’t better than the great Nick Saban.

Also, I know that on the Tech blogs people borrow others names and use them to make stupid comments bashing Tech, I can only assume that this is the case on the UGA blogs for the people who bash Murray. Lets face it, UGA is not a good team this year, but Murray has looked pretty damn good for a first year QB. If you really are a UGA fan and are bashing Murray, you desperately need to find another team to (not) support and you know absolutely nothing about football. UGA can beat AUB as long as they keep the turnovers down. less than 2 or 3 would be great. AUB has no defense and with UGA ball control keeps Cam on the sideline. UGA can win 28-14 or 31-17 somthing like that.

Jeff-
Predicting a win for Georgia? Really? Not a student of the game. Saban got beat 21-14 to L Monroe in his first year putting in the 3-4 defense, and Georgia has a freshman QB who can’t hit the side of a barn, unless it’s the other team’s barn.
I mean, if Georgia wins, and holds Idaho St. to less than 21 points, and less than 280 yards, that means Grantham’s ahead of where Saban was in his first year getting the 3-4 goign, and I don’t think you’re saying Grantham’s better than Saban, right?
If Grantham’s worse than Saban, Grantham’s D will give up 21+, and over 300 yards to Id St. today.

If we lose to Tech – Richt goes! For sure we will lose to Auburn. This game with Utah is another practice game. If I were CMR and if I wanted to stay in Athens – I would be practicing for Tech for the next 3 weeks. “Implosion” – GA has already done that. This whole season is an implosion. Even if we had won vs FL, we still would not have beaten a good team. There is not 1 solid victory this year. We only have 1 chance left to get one vs Auburn and we won’t get that. A victory over Tech keeps Richt in town, but it won’t be a victory over a good team. This year is an implosion!

CMR lost his best coach when Van Gorder left. He doesn’t know to hire or what to look for in asst coaches. thats why GA’s football program is where it is today. Next season will be as bad or worse due to graduation and some juniors opting to go pro. Jeff, i guess i’ll get that ‘apology’ from you sometime soon. ya know, back in July, when i said Auburn would be 10-0 when they play UGA, you responded by saying, “put the pipe down, jack”…i’ll be looking thru-out the day..lol..btw, i’ve never used a pipe, nor papers, for that matter..
UGA-49, ISU-7,,,,Richt just doesn’t ‘run the score up’ on people since he came to UGA..i guess it’s easier to do that when you’re just the guy up in the box(behind the scenes) making the play calls. it’s always the head coach that gets ripped for doing that…

Decatur Dog – you are showing your lack of knowledge of the game. Murray is not to short – 6′1″. Drew Brees is 6′1″ and he won the Super Bowl. Joe Montana is 6′1″ and , guess what, he won the Super Bowl also. The difference between Murray and Cox is obvious but the most noticeable thing is that he can run. He made mistakes. Two of the interceptions were on him. On the fumbe no one blocked the blitzer. On the other interception the receiver should have caught the ball – right in his hands. Florida’s QB should have had two more interceptions on him but the DB’s couldn’t catch a ball right in their hands. The defense couldn’t recover two fumbles right in their hands. There is enough blame to go around. It is not all on Murray.

Jeff-
Considering what happened to Saba in 07 against L Monore in 1st year with the 3-4, expectinga win from Georgia against Idaho State means you are WAY TOO OPTIMISTIC.
Reserve your optimism for team not in its’ 1st year putting in the 3-4, with a brand new defensive staff, who lost 3 DL to the NFL, and has a Freshman interception prone shorty at the helm at QB.
Georgia beats Idaho State today? Sure, like L Monore beat Alabama in 07′.

What else is new. This program cannot open with a competitive D-1 program on the road, thus yeilding to the beatdown from ISU last year in Stillwater. UGA is all about beating up on small schools, which gives them some sort of unfounded cockiness.
Look at this year, LA-Lafayette, give me a freakin break. Then UGA fans start barking about other schools wiht soft openers, which has nothing to do with the tanked UGA program.

It was like Appalachian State opening with Michigan….and Michigan had nothing to gain and everything to lose. Most of the problems with UGA program resides on your AD’s and this is where the changes need to be made.
UGA needs to open with a competitive program on the road, and even if they are ranked and lose, they lose early (i.e. Alabama) then they have a chance to climb back into the race.

By the way Jeff, I am predicting Alabama and Oregon in the BCS title game and here’s why:
1. Alabama will win today over LSU.
2. Either TCU or Utah will lose today, thus knocking one of these out of the top 5, moving Alabama to #5
3. Alabama will drill Auburn in the final game of the season, thus moving them to 3 or 4.
4. Alabama will drill South Carolina or Florida in the SEC title game, thus moving them to 2.
5. Oregon will run the table and has enough strength of schedule in the Pac-10 to remain #1.
Oregon vs. Alabama in the title game will be a rantings blowout, most likely bigger than the superbowl and believe me, the networks are praying for this BCS outcome.

When you see the players from the 1980 team today, keep in mind that very few of them ever attended a regular college class. Instead they spent four years in “remedial studies,” which means they were just retaking the basic courses they should have learned in grade school. Most of these players were functionally illiterate when they entered UGA, and they weren’t much better when they left. As a result, most of them have worked in low-paying menial jobs since they left UGA.

Does any coach in the NCAA love FGs more than Mark Richt? He starts starts getting aroused, thinking about a FG as soon as the offense gets inside the 40 yd line.
By contrast, Spurrier looks like he’s gonna throw-up when he has to call (on 4th and 22) the FG team on the field.

Jeauxseph, first of all, Richt SHOULD be fired and shouldn’t be around to make those decisions.
But if McGarity refuses to do the right thing (as Richt refused to do for so many years re: Soft Willie) then this is what needs to happen:
Fire whole offensive staff.
Fire VanHallinger.
Of course, Richt won’t fire his offensive staff, and he’ll NEVER fire VanHallinger, who is closer to him than a brother.
Those two facts are EXACTLY why Richt himself should be fired.

Maybe we deserve each other and our mediocre fates.
Both team should have beat their main competition.
Both teams on third down called a pass instead of a safer running play.
Both teams were picked turning the game to a loss.
Both team have a certain percentage of idiots with nothing better to do than harrass the other fan base.
Yea it looks like we are stuck with each other.

Ga Dawg 97, I could see you complaining if Murray was a Junior or Senior but a Redshirt Freshman is going to make mistakes when he is counted upon to keep the offense in the game when the defense can’t step up and make a stop. If you want to get on somebody look at Booboo and why he did not draw up plays specifically and only for AJ. Not once was there a bomb just for AJ to try and catch. That is on the play calling not the player.

Murray hasn’t been right in the head since he got creamed a couple of games ago. He hurries his passes even though the pocket is secure and doesn’t seem to trust his tailbacks’ blocking incoming blitzers. Sometimes a guy can get hit really hard and then start to flinch. Back in my day they called it getting gun shy.
Oh and by the way, Dawgs fans can forget about A.J. Green coming back. If he can make it out of the season healthy, he’s gone. He has received so much positive national publicity this year despite acting like a dumb<ss, and #4 or #6 draft money is too much to roll the dice he doesn't get hurt next year and fall to #32 draft money status.

Murray had an up and down game vs UF, but his stats are heads and shoulders better than any first year starting QB for UGA. Also check his stats against other first year starting QBs this season: UF’s Brantley, Texas’ Gilbert, ND’s Crist.
He’s better than all of them. And they all have really good OCs. Murray has Bobo, a QB coach promoted to OC by his buddy Richt.

I do like CMR and have respect for him. I am not the typical delusional UGA fan that thinks we are entitled to the Sugar Bowl every year. Too many UGA fans fail to realize where UGA was before Richt took over. The Goff/Donnan years were forgettable at best. I for one feel like he has earned the right to prove everyone wrong next year. If there is not significant improvement then I will be on the Fire CMR boat as well. I have enjoyed the time thinking we are close to the next/elite level and will stick with a guy that has gotten us closer than any coach in the last 25 years.

How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.
Sit back and be grateful for the seven or eight wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.
It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.
Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are light-years ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.
Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.
But congratulations on winning the Fulmer/Richt Cup.

On a happier note, is Florida in decline? Did Meyer use Zook’s recruits and a few hype recruits thereafter and had tremendous help from Tebow to mask that he might not be all that he’s supposed to be? Just saying, not tin foil hat thing with Newton but what if Meyer needs a little distraction and leaked the story from his good buddy at MSU to bring down Newton so they don’t have to listen to “how about that Cam Newton? Why isn’t he here?” While Urban fields one of the worst teams you’ve seen out of Florida in years.
Hmmmm. The only problem is, UGA still sucks unless they play a FCS team and UT sucks and UK is a mess and South Carolina is like one of those girls on a horror flick that is running from a slow monster but keeps tripping and can’t move fast enough. The SEC East, wow. Years ago it was UT and UF, now it’s the West with ALA, AUB, LSU and even ARK and possibly MSU.

I agree, Murray can pass. He can scramble. He’s short though and that’s not good long term. Also, what the heck is with our line? I thought they were supposed to be great? Auburn’s D line is real good, their DB’s are not. But if they’re camping out in our backfield and put a spy on Murray then he’ll get a few passes off but not enough. Meanwhile, Newton and co. will rush and rush and rush and rush till they’re running 80 yard drives in four plays and all on the ground. I think LSU said we knew they were going to run, we set up to stop the run, they ran 400-500 yards on us, whatever the number was. That’s scary. LSU might have coaching issues but they don’t have Defense or defensive talent issues. They might even beat Bama today.

Better arm too. Just needs some time on the field as a freshman. He and Driskell are going to battle it out next year for the staring job. Brantley needs to transfer to Arkansas where he will be very good in that type of offense.

The problem with Auburn is we have Grantham, the choke artist.
The other problem is Dyer, McCaleb (sp?) and Newton. They have a spread run. Then they play action pass and Newton can do that very well. And the other problem is they have a good senior line, a good one. So, they have blocking, they have runners, they have a monster QB that can pass and run. You set up for Newton then the others will burn you. You’re defense has to be spread out to defend all of the above. You can’t rush 5, you can’t blitz well.
That’s a good system.
UGA’s best hope is they can block Auburn’s d-line and make passes. Auburn is not going to bite on the run game, they can rush 4 and stop our run game all day. They put a spy on murray and contain him then he has to beat you pocket passing. We will score. We might even go up 14-0. But Auburn will score a lot more.
AUB 51 UGA 32, game over by 2nd or 3rd quarter.
Then we beat GT and Richt stays and we come back for next year demanding respect… yeah.
BTW, I don’t buy the home team vs. away team, series history, etc. Auburn had bad QB’s when we beat them 4 in a row. In fact, it’d been 5 but a bad QB burned us on a 4th and 10 at the end of the game on their own 20 or 30 or something for a TD. I can recall times when the unranked team beat the ranked team, but I’ve not seen this late in the season a time when a completely unranked team beat a top 10 team. I think Auburn is playing a revenge game not only for 4 losses but also for Cam Newton.

BOI plays too many teams that are FBS that wouldn’t win out in the FCS. So I can see why they wouldn’t play a FCS team this year, they can’t afford the already bad hit on their strength of schedule.
But if we are to use BOI as a yard marker as to what we should be, then I suggest every non-conference game be against a middle school team . That way at the end of the year our schedule is almost equal to the strength of schedule of BOI.
too bad that BOI doesn’t have the academic standards necessary to join the PAC 10, they’d make a good edition in football.

I guess the UGA ThugCoaches are taking the opportunity to run-up the score as much as they can to pad their stats. You THUGS sure couldn’t do that to Colorado, Arkansas, Miss St, or Florida.
I guess it makes you and Dawg Nation feel better about themselves to run it up on a team that is 3-19 over the last 2 years, and hasn’t beat a Div.I school since 2000. Go ahead and revel in your win today and dance on the sidelines like you are a bunch of tribesmen – cause Auburn is going to put you back in your place.

Good Lord you had your 1 chance at Florida for another 4 years and lost , you beat a very down Tennessee that will be picked to finish 2nd in the East next year and you’re bragging about finishing @ .500. same record next year , or maybe worse. Go easy on Jeff. He picked Idaho St. to cover the 45, so he has a vested interest in the line. Frankly, I was hoping the Dawgs 2nd string could pull of a few more scores… to show us what that have. But, alas, they even missed the 2nd string FG. But, a win is a win, and all other teams chalk up their easy wins, too!

… there will be better days ahead. Hoping it will start next week, but certain it will happen the weekend after Thanksgiving when we take Tech to the woodshed….again.
The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against thug-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.
So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

I am so glad CMR let the 2nd and 3rd string play most of the 2nd half. Cuff showed why he is on the second team with his coverage on that TD pass and the two others before the forth quarter even with his int. Mason had some bad luck with his receivers dropping passes and Thomas showed why he is not a starter at RB. I swear there is not a blade of grass he runs pass that does not trip him up. All in all this was what it should have been less the first quarter. A complete domination and letting the subs get quality game time. I don;t think they can let a whole quarter pass against Auburn before scoring the first TD so this weeks practice had better be focused and hard hitting.

I think this year has proved that Mike Bobo does deserve another chance. Yes, I was one to say that he needed to go after last year, but now I’m leaning towards letting him stay and see what he can do with Murray and this offense. Outside of the two weak games (La La and Id St.) Georgia hasn’t scored more than twenty points in two games…against two stiff defenses South Carolina and Miss St. Outside of those two teams Georgia has scored more than twenty points in six of its eight “real” games…and averaging more than thirty points a game which should be enough to win any game. In their five losses, the dawgs are averaging right at twenty points a game. I don’t think that is such a bad thing considering we have a freshman, a great freshman at that, running the helm. Our future is bright for the next couple of years. I never wanted to say what we all say “There’s always next year” now, but there is and I think we will be the team next year people hoped for this year. Progress takes time and we are making progress. All you who are doubtful say what you want, but just wait another year for this team to show you what it can do. You won’t be dissapointed. Bobo stays, Richt stays, Grantham stays and all will be joyful in Athens this time next year! The faithful will pull out a win over Auburn…I’ll bet my life savings over it. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You have absolutely NO idea what you are talking about. Permit me to introduce myself. I am a female that graduated from UGA with a degree in Biochemistry in 1980. I teach in a very successful Magnet program for Science and Technology and have actually written more teacher recs for kids to go to Tech than you can imagine. My daughter is a senior at UGA, who was also accepted to Tech, but chose UGA because of their outstanding Genetics program. She has been accepted to Emory Med School next year. I am the biggest proponent of academics that you will ever meet. However, I LOVE UGA football and look forward to taking 1 day off from schoolwork a week in the fall to cheer my Dawgs on. While respecting Tech as an institution, there is no team that I had rather beat up on. And we do it well. So, please don’t give me your indignant speech on your superiority when it comes to Tech and all that goes with it. Go find some people on your own blog and see if you can impress them.

Really the kid has played great all season except for the florida game and Murray is no where near as bad as Cox was!
