JACKSONVILLE — Time to play.
Was thinking last night — while Tim Tucker and I strategically avoided “The Landing” area — about the enormous pressure on certain individuals in today’s Georgia-Florida game. It’s odd only in that both teams are unranked going into this contest for the first time since 1979. So much for national ramifications.
But think about the pressure on . . .
♦ Mark Richt: Georgia has won three straight but you can’t just wipe out a 1-4 start. If the Dogs lose, they are absolutely, positively dead in the SEC East (I think) because they would lose tiebreakers with both Florida and South Carolina. They also would need to win two of their final three games (Idaho State, at Auburn, Georgia Tech) just to become bowl eligible.
♦ Urban Meyer: Think he’s not feeling some heat? Here’s a guy who appeared to have a serious health issue, suddenly retired, then even more suddenly unretired. He explained his chest pains as “esophageal spasms” and some immediately wondered about truthfulness. We can’t know if Meyer’s heath has affected the way he’s gone about his job this season but we know this: The Gators have lost three straight and they rank 89th in the nation in total offense. Florida can still win the East but if they lose they’ll be 2-4 in the East and all but cooked. For those Dogs’ fans looking for a possible omen, here you go: The last time Florida lost four straight was in 1988. The fourth loss in that streak came to Georgia 16-3.

♦ John Brantley: It can’t be easy replacing Tim Tebow, but the Gators’ quarterback was expected to be better than this. In his defense, the offensive line and running game have been awful. But nobody could have expected these numbers through seven games: six touchdown passes, five interceptions, 10 sacks. Brantley had four touchdowns and zero interceptions against Miami (Ohio) and South Florida so you can do the math on the five SEC games.
♦ Aaron Murray: He has been great this season. But he never has played in this stadium or a game of this magnitude. Richt planned to talk to the freshman during the week about trying to maintain his composure. Also, Florida’s defense is still pretty good.
♦ Chris Rainey: Not too much pressure on him, huh? Mr. Time To Die Guy shouldn’t even be in this game (my opinion) but Meyer believes he has paid a big en0ugh price for texting a death threat to his estranged girl friend. He won’t have his phone during the game so he’ll actually have to speak his threats.
One last thing on Rainey: If you have no problem with him coming back because you believe he deserves another chance, that’s fine. But the worst — and most prevalent — excuse I’ve heard is that athletes used to do these dumb things all the time and we never knew about it. The point? I have no doubt that star athletes got away with things before that they can’t now. But that doesn’t make what happened before right. Fact is, that was wrong. Coaches never should be allowed to go pick up his star player from the sheriff’s office and say, “I’ll take care of it. He’ll run steps.” Pretty sure the science teacher isn’t doing the same thing for his students. (”Oh, he’ll just do extra experiments.”)
♦ Caleb King: He’s coming back from a two-game suspension after being arrested for failing to appear in court for a speeding ticket. The fact Washaun Ealey has a sprained knee may necessitate King taking on a major role. By the way: Funny line this week by Richt. He noted the Dogs are undefeated this year when they have a running back suspended (3-0 during King and Ealey suspensions). When asked Tuesday if any player has been suspended yet this week, Richt cracked: “It’s early.”
Fortunately, everybody made it through the night without handcuffs. One less thing to worry about. I’ll be back later with a few shots from the stadium and any updates, but I figured I would post a blog early.

He has the same type weapons as in ‘07, except a QB who protects the ball this time. Turn him loose, Richt, and keep your foot on the gas!

I hope Richt leaves the goofy gimmicks at the team hotel. Here’s a crazy idea; how about just knocking the other guy’s helmet off every time you get a chance. Think Erk Russell. Since Dooley quit coaching, these guys have had out number. We’ve had every type of coach with Goof, Donnan & Richt and their own offense, defenses, players etc. and they still own us. I feel like the DAWGS will win today; however, these feeligs are met with skepticism AND I think that IS THE MAIN REASON for the 3-17 record vs. the gayturds. We don’t belive and they do! Still I am taking the DAWGS today!!!!!!!!

Good Stuff JS- a lot is on the line for this game. I think Murray is going to handle this game fine and be the star. Just hoping the D does not give up big plays again to Brantley or Death Threat Rainey- which i agree with you on. He should have a year suspension. If Richt suspends a player 2 games for missing a court date, IMO, the bar should be set at all schools the same way.

Richt was 1-2 against ZOOK. Think about that for a second.

But to me, again, all of that takes a back seat to what I like to refer to The World’s Largest Chain Gang Party.
What, with Mark Richt and Urban Meyer going head to head, the ONLY way you know no one is getting arrested is because they’re all on the field, playing.
Talk about two coaches with horrible attitudes towards discipline.
Yes, I do believe Meyer is worse. Meyer has had far more FELONS on his team that he has allowed to come back and play for him.
But just because Meyer is worse doesn’t make Richt right.
For me, Richt’s lasting legacy at Georgia has been the last five years in which he’s not won an SEC Championship, that’s true, but even more, has had all of these arrests.
Believe it or not, Richt and Meyer are neck and neck for arrests since 2005. And Richt has MORE. Again, Meyer has had more serious felonies and such, but Richt has MORE arrests.
I’m sick of it. I’m sick of the embarrassment that Richt’s lackadaisical approach to discipline has brought MY school.
There NEEDS to be a change at Georgia. Wins and losses simply don’t matter anymore.
The Police Blotter at the ACCPD is all that matters. And there is where Richt is the biggest loser.

Man, I had to set up a couple of appointments today. Hopefully I won’t miss too much of the game. Family comes 1st though! My wife, gator, said that she will have the nachos and football munchies ready when I walk in the door. Great wife!
Our Defense needs to come out immediately and make a statement. Hit someone in the mouth and continue to do so. If our defense is up to the challenge I believe our offense will definitely be. I don’t see a high scoring game unless our defense decides to forget how to play defense.
Nervous about this one! I guess it’s a good thing Munson retired. This one would not be good for his ticker. Still, would love for him to come back for this game!

Hey, NXS: you Dawg fans who keep bashing Tech enjoy yourselves all you want. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against moron-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.
So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.
Now sit back and watch your beloved thugs lose to a real team.

Just ignore the tech people on here. They are on here to see if you will react to their comments. Some are and that makes them very happy. Remember, they don’t have any true outside rivalries, outside of UGA, and this frustrates them. I get it. Not being much of a going concern would make me upset as well I guess.
Uga has UT, UF, Auburn and might as well throw in SC as big rivalries. tech………… uga, that’s it.
Still I want them to win the rest of the games except the last regular season game. I’d rather beat a good tech team, like last year, than a lousy one, like most years!

You are right, but win or lose, I’d take Murray over anybody I’ve seen in a long time. I, for one, couldn’t wait for Stafford to leave early, cause I had seen enough of him shrugging of big-game losses like he couldn’t care less.
Aaron Murray has a heart twice as big as Stafford. Not only is he smart, got a strong arm, a quick release, and enough guts for the whole team (how many times has he slid this year to avoid contact?), he left central Florida to be a Dawg.
He’s my boy, no matter how many games Bobo’s playcalling causes him to lose. The losses won’t be on him.

I expect my volvano at the science fair during the Georgia State Fair in Perry this Fall will gain me some attention from the Tech admissions board.

Agree about Stafford. World of talent, but could not lead a mule to water. The guy has zero leadership qualities. I remember at the beginning of the year there were people complaining about Murray being the QB. I kept saying that he was the real deal and will surprise people. I live in Tamps so I got to witness his talent. This kids a great QB and knows how to be a leader on the field as well. That’s what gave Tebow the “it” factor. Not saying he is as good as or better than Tebow, just saying that he has the “it” factor himself

Yep, DIT, even in the first game, he had control of the huddle. Football players know who’s talking the talk, and who’s walking the walk. At least two hits Murray has taken this year woulda put most QBs on the bench, but he didn’t miss a play.
I keep thinking back to what Colt McCoy said about Murray around the first of the year, when he was asked about the QBs coming up this season. The first thing he said was, “UGA’s Aaron Murray is gonna be a star.”
I just hope we can get a real OC who can build an agressve, Oregon-type, offense to take advantage of his talents.

We do need a new OC that can utilize ALL of the talent on the field. I just don’t get why we have not thrown to the two studs we have at TE position. Little delays from them will open huge holes! Of course I’m not a coach, just an Alumnus, but tend to think that most of us see that lack of throwing to our TE’s as well.

Somebody said it a lil earlier, UGA is never prepaired. And thats all on COACHING. They run the same old lame running plays, qb throwin and droppin the ball all over the place. The secondary was suspect all year long and they are doing what they do best, NOT covering any dang body!
Murray needs to learn how to pick up the pass rush,….My god…did anyone coach this kid??!!!! And looking at Richt on the sideline with his typical lackluster expressions. Man im sick of this team tossin it up every year!
Its so obvious that this team is NOT disciplined at all. FL fumbled inside the 10 yard line and all they had to do was fall on the dang ball, but the idiot trys to pick it up and run for the self-recognition and instead gives the ball back to FL and therefore….touchdown!

Y’all all knew that CMR was a softy coaching in the SEC. He won with Jim Donnan players and hasn’t done anything since they left the program. Georgia is a great ACC Team, but a not so good SEC team at the half. CMR needs to go.

SOS Dawg, Colorado would probably beat Florida, too. We shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that Florida is a bad team. Georgia under Richt is a Cocktail Party Choke Artist, no different than it was under Goff and Donnan.
Richt is John Cooper 2.0 – Cooper’s Ohio State teams would be so tight against Michigan they could barely execute the center-qb exchange, and Richt’s Dogs are no different against Florida. Murray looked terrified from the opening snap and it continued for an entire half.
Get rid of Richt after this year if UGA doesn’t mount a second-half comeback win. 2-8 against UF, including this year’s sorry Gator teams and three mediocre Zook teams, is completely unacceptable.

Murray grew up in the shadow of Gainesville and he is either messed up by something mental, or perhaps he didn’t sleep last night…don’t know what is wrong with him! Far and away his worst game of the year so far. Maybe he will wake up. The muffed plays are atrocious–dropped balls, broken routes, and missed receivers, some of which have been wide open and Aaron has thrown to the crowd. This is the worst our position players have performed all year. Bright spots: the O line is having a very good game in contrast. We just need to get our position players to get in synch with our line. Unfortunately, the turnovers have put us in a position where all UF has to do is come out and run well, hang on to the ball (something they seem to have a problem with too), and we will have trouble catching up. The only good things: looks like we might have a lot of free time on Saturdays this fall, and our young men will be very clean shaven! Go Dawgs! We need some great plays, breaks and some mo!

i love aaron murray but believe it folks he certainly lost this game for us. of course our wonderful coaching staff also hurt us. with murray having a bad day, we should have gone to the run with an occasional pass but cmr is not much of a coach. He will be here next year but that will be his last.
I’m 70 years old and I don’t think I’ll live long enough to see us beat the gators and I plan on living till I’m 100. What the heck, same old same old.

Silk stocking Roy Barnes is in jeans and running some great “get out the vote” commercials for the UGA fans complete with cows. Of course, he’s wasting his money since televisions all over the state are being turned off about now.
