Aaron Murray led rally but had too many mistakes in his first Florida game. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
JACKSONVILLE — It wasn’t humiliating. Is that better? After two mostly miserable decades in this rivalry and consecutive dismemberings of 49-10 and 41-17, should it feel better to know Georgia walked off the field and could have won?
“No — it’s a loss,” Akeem Dent said.
“An L is an L,” A.J. Green said.
“This kind of hurt more,” Washaun Ealey said.
Georgia came close Saturday. That shouldn’t be the objective.
Maybe comebacks say something about a team’s character. Maybe the Bulldogs grew up a little in the second half. Maybe the quarterback won’t have early-game jitters next time. Maybe one year again, they’ll actually beat Florida.
But this program should not be about gauging the degree of severity of losses.
They lost in overtime 34-31. They showed remarkable resolve by rallying from a 21-7 halftime deficit to tie it twice, the last time at 31-31 with 4:36 left in regulation. That’s certainly more resiliency and substance that the past two Georgia teams showed in Jacksonville.
A.J. Green's 15-yard touchdown sent the game into overtime.
But here’s the reality check. This is not a great Florida team. It entered with its worst regular-season losing streak in 22 years. This is certainly the worst team Urban Meyer ever has fielded. It’s so bad that a 4-4 Georgia team on the wrong end of a lopsided rivalry was favored.
The Dogs lost anyway. That makes 18 in the past 21 years.
“I really don’t look at it like that,” said athletic director Greg McGarity. “College players have a two- or three-year window. They weren’t here the whole time.”
He is right about that. The real problem is that the one-year view is no better.
At 3-4 in the SEC, they are dead in the conference race.
At 4-5 overall, they are clinging only to mathematical possibilities for a lower-tier bowl.
The Liberty Bowl never should be the objective.
Green has been through three of these Florida games now. He probably won’t go through a fourth. The NFL calls. But it will take some time to forget this one.
“I swear I thought we were going to win this,” he said.
The loss dropped Georgia to 4-5 and Mark Richt to 2-8 against Florida. (Brant Sanderlin/AJC)
The comeback started with a field goal in the third quarter, making it 21-10. The Georgia scored touchdowns on its next three possessions. Murray, after completing only 5 of 14 passes with two interceptions in the first half, went 13-for-21 with two touchdowns in the second.
And we wondered: “Where did this team come from?”
“We were clicking on all cylinders,” Green said. “We had the momentum.”
Trailing 31-24, Murray drove the Dogs from midfield with under seven minutes left. On third-and-goal from the 15, he found Green in the middle of the end zone to tie the score. The teams went to overtime.
One more Murray mistake decided it. He tried to hit Green in the corner of the end zone, but the pass was tipped by linebacker Jelani Jones and intercepted at the 11 by safety Will Hill. (He nearly returned it for a touchdown but was pushed out of bounds at the 4-yard line by Tavarres King.)
Murray on the interception: “I’ve just got to learn from it. I wish I could take that throw back.”
The Gators got the ball back and ran three plays before Chas Henry’s game-winning 37-yard field goal.
Green, as a member of the field-goal block team, had a close-up view.
“I felt like I was going to block it,” he said. “It was real close.”
How close?
“I could feel the wind from the ball. Then I turned around and thought, ‘Dang.’ I was hoping a bird would fly down and knock it down.”
That just doesn’t happen in this rivalry. Things go wrong. Meyer justifiably gets torched for deciding to bring “Time To Die” guy, Chris Rainey back from suspension for this game.
What happens? Rainey scores the game’s first touchdown on a 20-yard run.
But this was less about Rainey than it was about Georgia. The Dogs are better than they were at 1-4. But not a lot. Beating Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Kentucky doesn’t prove a lot. Nor does losing close. It just makes for a little more pain and a little less humiliation.

Why leave Starkville for Athens??? You can’t win a national championship in Starkville, but it’s at least attainable in Athens. Pretty simple.

Florida took criticism for keeping Chris Rainey on the team, despite a legal issue with a girlfriend. The junior from Lakeland paid a huge price — missing five games. He was finally allowed to play again in Saturday’s 34-31 overtime win against Georgia. He ran for 84 yards on 16 attempts and made an obvious difference for a team that was struggling offensively.
Afterward, he stood in front of the team and gave an emotional speech.
“Chris is a great person,” UF center and close friend Mike Pouncey said. “He thanked the whole administration, (Athletic Director) Jeremy Foley, the president (Bernie Machen). And he thanked God as well for giving him a second chance. He thanked everybody for giving him a second chance. And without Jeremy Foley and President Machen, it wouldn’t be possible for him to play right now.
“I actually cried after the game because I felt every bit of his pain because I know Rainey, he’s a great person. He’s never been in any kind of trouble and for him to miss … all those games, I know it hurt him to his heart and it hurt me too.”

And, tried to tell you we wouldn’t beat FL because we beat 4 soft easy teams while Fl lost to 3 good teams
Be careful for what you ask, you might end up with a Coach who is NOT a Christian. That is obviously far preferable to everything else.

“Some fool on page one called Aaron Murray a “midget” that would have a hard time seeing over Dline. Yup, there are some fools out there, Aaron Murray is exactly the same hight as Drew Brees QB of the world champion New Orleans Saints…………”
Of course, Aaron Murray is not anywhere near the height of Drew Brees and is 4 wins 5 losses as Starting Quarterback while Drew Brees is the Super Bowl Champion MVP.
Look, the problem with Aaron Murray is that he is NOT READY. He also has balls batted down at the line, and has beat NO GOOD TEAM. He has lost in addition to 2 BAD TEAMS, Colorado and Florida. In SEC games this season, Aaron Murray has been completely unable to run the football at all, yet he takes 8 or 10 rushing attempts away from the running backs every game. He tries to do too much.
34 yards backwards his fumble went today. Florida scored a TD. They beat us by a field goal.
We never even go to Overtime, if not for the Aaron Murray 34 yard fumble and sack. He held the football outside his little itty body and had it taken away when all he had to do was get tackled.
He beat 2-6 La Lafayette doing that, 2-6 vols doing that, 2-6 Vandie doing that, and beat 4-5 Kentucky doing that, he also LOST to Colorado trying to beat them by himself.
His balls get batted down. Get over it. He is not fast by SEC DL comparison. He has not rushed the football effectively against SEC DL. And, he will not. He is 4.7 and they are FASTER and 100 lbs bigger and 7 inches taller. They are also a lot stronger and our now over anyway season, is completely lost without him. He is our best player. The problem is that he is out-performed in nearly every game by the other teams’ quarterbacks. He was again today.

(2) he can LOSE 8 of the 10 FU teams he has played
(3) he can LOSE 10 games vs NOT Top 25 Final AP Poll in 10 years

This # 11 program in 1-A wins (I see Headley Lamar(r) finally looked that up AFTER he TOLD US ALL incorrectly 1st.) actually # 20 in wins after 2005 through today (42-19 is # 20 not # 11 in 1-A wins over these last 5 years now this season including 2010 for the # 11 in 1-A wins All-time Program.
All the announcers could find to discuss all night long is this guy was suspended and this guy was suspended, and this other guy was suspended and another guy was suspended…
Ray Goof and Lame Kitten were NEITHER HEAD COACHES.
UGA has as our issue today that CMR is not ready yet to be HEAD COACH because he CANNOT HIRE A STAFF nor discipline players – he also cannot recruit. He goes for the wrong type of player. When we had the ball and we handed the ball to Caleb King at the end of the game with the game in the balance, what did he do ? NOTHING. That’s what.
What did Aaron Murray do ? He tried hard. That is A LOT more than Caleb King has done, ever. He isn’t coached properly, but he tried at least. Had the game been played ‘Tween The Hedges, he wins this game, instead of jitters and 21-7 against a crap team in a weird venue 2010 that has seen its day come and now be well past gone.
St. Simons is now yelling at UGA fans too.
What we need and deserve at UGA is a PROVEN HEAD COACH, no more assistants and paying them $ 3 million like they are capable of hiring a coaching staff.
And, how the HELL is Greg McGarity going to be able to help Coach Richt out when he has NEVER coached a game of tidily winks ?

I appreciate the aggressive approach to the OT possession. You ALWAYS go for the touchdown until 4th down. A freshman quarterback made a freshman mistake and threw into triple coverage when perhaps he should have threw the ball away. Stuff happens. Get over it.

Does one person(search committee members don’t count) believe that Georgia has recently had with the last three coaches selected, one, just one, decent search committee? Homers, I’m not driving at mediocrity here. I’m talking about getting a championship type coach here. How is that Auburn search committees, even when they apparently didn’t land a big name coach, were nonetheless keen enough to produce three, that’s three, guys that have gone undefeated in periods when given less time than Richt. Terry Bowden(a perfect season), Tommy Turbeville(a perfect season), Gene Chisic(so far in a competitive year a perfect season). Richt even when he’s been forecast for a big year has never been undefeated and has routinely underachieved. His signature marks now have been undisciplined, predictible, unprepared, underachieving, erratic, improper technique, even snakebit teams.
I recently watched a Chuck Dowdle softball type, all is well, interview with Greg McGarity, and thought, is he not only going to ignore the Richt failures/damage here, but could also be contemplating rewarding Richt with an increased long term benefit package? When your program decides to stop living off a 30-year-old play from 1980 and realizes that Herschel Walker may as well be Doak Walker, UGA will make progress. Until then, UF, ALA, AU and LSU will carry the conference. And UGA will remain a speed bump for the SEC’s premier programs. A mediocre program but not really relevant in this century. “Don’t blame Murray? Are you kidding me?”
I agree. If Murray had been blocking the guy that blocked the pass in overtime instead of trying to throw the pass we would have won the game.
And you can blame Bobo for not teaching Murray how to pass block, read defenses and pass at the same time.
And we can fire Richt for hiring Bobo in the first place.
And while we are at it lets do get rid of Adams. He has gotta be the worst coach among the SEC presidents. I heard he was a soccer guy in high school. Can you believe that?
