Urban Meyer slammed again for Chris Rainey decision

Chris Rainey (with football, not cellphone).

Chris Rainey (with football, not cellphone).

Urban Meyer is still on a losing streak — on and off the field.

Any hopes the Florida coach had that the backlash over his decision to reinstate wide receiver Chris Rainey would fade pretty much imploded again.

The latest slam comes from Carol Wick, who runs a domestic violence shelter in Orlando. Wick told Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “I think somebody in sports has got to take a stand. Given Urban Meyer’s well-known moral values, I think it would do a lot of good if he were the first coach to step up and say, ‘No, this is unacceptable behavior. I wouldn’t tolerate it in my home. I wouldn’t want it to happen to my daughter and I’m not going to tolerate it on my team. Violence and threats against women are not acceptable.’ ”

Urban Meyer: Not making friends.

Urban Meyer: Not making friends.

The background: Rainey, the Gators’ wide receiver, sent a text message to his estranged girlfriend: “Time to die, [bleep].”

When Wick was informed that Rainey has been painted as a good guy by Meyer, she responded, “Good guys don’t send threatening text messages telling their girlfriends that it’s time to die.”

Rainey was suspended indefinitely but partially reinstated last week. The expectation is that he will play in Saturday’s game against Georgia in Jacksonville. Meyer said he’ll make that call on Thursday.

The Florida coach, whose team has lost three straight, tried to sound like the tough guy again today. He didn’t pull it off. Speaking on the weekly SEC coaches conference call with media members, he said: “As of now he has done everything he’s supposed to do. … We’re going to keep a tight rein on Chris Rainey. He’s never been an issue before and he certainly better never be again.”

Meyer also echoed some the remarks he had said on Tuesday, saying that the bye week will “result in some changes” to the offense.

Also this: Rainey would play both wide receiver and running back.

Urban Meyer – a man without integrity.

Yes, I’d rather have Mark Richt as my coach even if we lose this week, but we won’t.

No turnovers!

Who didn’t predict that Rainey would be back for this game, given the struggles of the Gator offense? You? Let me show you this bridge I have for sale…

LOL @ athensdawg.

I can’t believe you would expect anything less from Meyer. The guy doesn’t care about principles, values, morals etc…. all he cares about is winning. He gets paid $4Million dollars to win and not discipline.

I would also take Richt over Meyer any day of the week and twice on Saturdays. Morals are more important than winning. What if he had texted “time to die, *****” to his daughter at Georgia Tech? Would Rainey still be on the team then?

Urban Meyer’s “well known moral values”…What moral values, the guy has none. This is the same guy who retired ostensiblty to spend more time with his family because of his health, then unretired the next day after we all heard the heart-warming quote from his daughter “I finally get my daddy back.” Then he says he’s going to take an extended leave of absence that never really happened. Well known moral values, please. I was shocked that Rainey wasn’t reinstated for the Alabama game.

This is the same coach who suspended Brandon Spikes for a half for trying to permanently blind another player. Is it time for Foley to step in and help Urban out? How much negative publicity does he want for his football team? Tune in on Thursday to find out.

Urban Meyer has no moral fiber at all. This Rainey kid would have been kicked off of either team in this state-UGA or GT.He is so consumed by winning and avenging those who have wronged him, he is willing to sell his soul. I wonder if this happened to his daughter at Tech would he feel the same way. Meyer has no backbone, just a rectum hanging on a piece of gristle.

Jeff – seeing how Urban did react to the media backlash on the Spikes issue last year(trying to blind Ealey)… any chance he is channeling his inner Bill Clinton and seeing how the media would re-act to the reinstatement… and then make his decision?

ie – Coach Meyer – “let’s float the idea of play him… if the backlash isn’t too bad, than i am ok… if I get crushed, then I don’t reinstate. And then I can snap back at the media, ‘you guys jumped to conclusions, you made up a story, etc…

He seems to be a guy who really does react to public discussion on him (see retirement fiasco)

thanks JS

I expect this type of backlash from GA fans. Yeah let all you guys talk about Myers discipline of Rainey but lets excuse the huge arrest record of UGA football.

Lets not forget that CMR, learned passionate justice from the worse disciplinarian in the game: Bobby Bowden. I suggest that UGAY fans throw stones at their own glass house.

Florida will be GA with or with Rainey.

Marietta_Gator – of the 11 UGA arrests since March, all of them were drinking related or traffic charges with the exception of Mettenberger and Montez Robinson. They both had issues with women and they were both kicked off the team.

There’s no comparison in how Richt handles these issues vs. Meyer. Lest we forget the 1/2 game Spikes suspension??

I’ll be in my red and black on Saturday rooting on the Dawgs, but honestly (and to play devil’s advocate), I’m tired of the folks in this state saying they’d rather have Richt than Meyer because of morals. Think any Florida fan would trade their national championships in order to say their coach is a good Christian with strong morals? Especially when you add up all of our players’ arrests?

And believe me…it’s never going to stop….contrar. Any time you give scholarships to kids because they can run fast and jump high…irregardless of their character…..this is exactly what you’ll get every time. Don’t believe it…check the sports pages/police blotters in any given paper from any merto area anytime…voila!! It’s the demographics stupid!

Marietta Gator, neither GA nor UF can stand on the moral high horse here, but it’s disgraceful that Rainey is back on the team. If he were a mediocre player buried on the depth chart, Meyer would have gotten all high and mighty and kicekd him off the team. Now, mired in a three-game losing streak he needs this bum.

Is a Misdemeanor a misdemeanor? Rainey was not charged with a Felony…so he made a stupid statement—most college kids have, hell Rainey has NEVER been in trouble with the law before.

can that be said to the habitual violators at UGA? I mean whenever you have a suspended license something had to preempt that by being charged with breaking another crime.

Rainey is a “them” problem. Richt did the right thing when he kicked Mettenberger off of the team for disrespecting women. All we have to do is beat whoever they suit up which has been a bit problematic in recent history. Like most of the Gator fans, who choose to live in my great state, us Dawg fans will be doing all we can (yelling at the t.v.) to bring home a victory.

I agree that Rainey should have been kicked off the team for good, but hell, what about Cam Newton? He was basically kicked off of FL because he stole a laptop, but yet the media won’t speak of that and he gets a second chance just like Ole Miss ’s QB. So please spare Gator fans the lecture about what CMR would have and would not have done. The bottom line is this is all about winning and nothing else. If you really want to bitch, then why not start by saying if a person does not qualify acdemically, then he can’t play Div 1 football?

There were also several instances this past summer of Gator freshman being arrested for underage drinking…… NONE were suspended for anything, as discipline was “handled within the program”………..

As much as the AJC acted like underage drinking was equivilant to violently threatening a woman this past summer, maybe you should damn Urban for this as well.

Actually, Rainey was charged with a Felony. He simply took a plea deal for a conviction on a misdemeanor.

And you know what, although Georgia has had problems with kids getting arrested on TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS, Richt will kick a guy off a team for mistreating women. No matter how talented the guy is. Case in point: See Montez Robinson and Zac Mettenberger (and Mettenberger’s Mom even works in the athletic office.)

Bottom line is that Urban has no morals whatsoever.
