Urban Meyer slammed again for Chris Rainey decision

Chris Rainey (with football, not cellphone).

Chris Rainey (with football, not cellphone).

Urban Meyer is still on a losing streak — on and off the field.

Any hopes the Florida coach had that the backlash over his decision to reinstate wide receiver Chris Rainey would fade pretty much imploded again.

The latest slam comes from Carol Wick, who runs a domestic violence shelter in Orlando. Wick told Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “I think somebody in sports has got to take a stand. Given Urban Meyer’s well-known moral values, I think it would do a lot of good if he were the first coach to step up and say, ‘No, this is unacceptable behavior. I wouldn’t tolerate it in my home. I wouldn’t want it to happen to my daughter and I’m not going to tolerate it on my team. Violence and threats against women are not acceptable.’ ”

Urban Meyer: Not making friends.

Urban Meyer: Not making friends.

The background: Rainey, the Gators’ wide receiver, sent a text message to his estranged girlfriend: “Time to die, [bleep].”

When Wick was informed that Rainey has been painted as a good guy by Meyer, she responded, “Good guys don’t send threatening text messages telling their girlfriends that it’s time to die.”

Rainey was suspended indefinitely but partially reinstated last week. The expectation is that he will play in Saturday’s game against Georgia in Jacksonville. Meyer said he’ll make that call on Thursday.

The Florida coach, whose team has lost three straight, tried to sound like the tough guy again today. He didn’t pull it off. Speaking on the weekly SEC coaches conference call with media members, he said: “As of now he has done everything he’s supposed to do. … We’re going to keep a tight rein on Chris Rainey. He’s never been an issue before and he certainly better never be again.”

Meyer also echoed some the remarks he had said on Tuesday, saying that the bye week will “result in some changes” to the offense.

Also this: Rainey would play both wide receiver and running back.

Urban Meyer – a man without integrity.

Yes, I’d rather have Mark Richt as my coach even if we lose this week, but we won’t.

LOL @ athensdawg.

I can’t believe you would expect anything less from Meyer. The guy doesn’t care about principles, values, morals etc…. all he cares about is winning. He gets paid $4Million dollars to win and not discipline.

I would also take Richt over Meyer any day of the week and twice on Saturdays. Morals are more important than winning. What if he had texted “time to die, *****” to his daughter at Georgia Tech? Would Rainey still be on the team then?

Urban Meyer’s “well known moral values”…What moral values, the guy has none. This is the same guy who retired ostensiblty to spend more time with his family because of his health, then unretired the next day after we all heard the heart-warming quote from his daughter “I finally get my daddy back.” Then he says he’s going to take an extended leave of absence that never really happened. Well known moral values, please. I was shocked that Rainey wasn’t reinstated for the Alabama game.

Urban Meyer has no moral fiber at all. This Rainey kid would have been kicked off of either team in this state-UGA or GT.He is so consumed by winning and avenging those who have wronged him, he is willing to sell his soul. I wonder if this happened to his daughter at Tech would he feel the same way. Meyer has no backbone, just a rectum hanging on a piece of gristle.

Jeff – seeing how Urban did react to the media backlash on the Spikes issue last year(trying to blind Ealey)… any chance he is channeling his inner Bill Clinton and seeing how the media would re-act to the reinstatement… and then make his decision?

ie – Coach Meyer – “let’s float the idea of play him… if the backlash isn’t too bad, than i am ok… if I get crushed, then I don’t reinstate. And then I can snap back at the media, ‘you guys jumped to conclusions, you made up a story, etc…

He seems to be a guy who really does react to public discussion on him (see retirement fiasco)

I expect this type of backlash from GA fans. Yeah let all you guys talk about Myers discipline of Rainey but lets excuse the huge arrest record of UGA football.

Lets not forget that CMR, learned passionate justice from the worse disciplinarian in the game: Bobby Bowden. I suggest that UGAY fans throw stones at their own glass house.

So please spare Gator fans the lecture about what CMR would have and would not have done. The bottom line is this is all about winning and nothing else. Urban says one thing and does another. He speaks of morals but play someone who gave death threats. He talks about Thursdays being Family Day at Florida in one sentence and in the next says that he never takes a day off. He sees nothing wrong with trying to poke eyes out during a game.

His words say one thing, his actions says another. There is a word for that.

Well it is not like I didn’t know that Urban Meyer wasn’t a man of class or integrity. He will do anything to win no matter the cost. UGA might not have the wins FLA has over the past couple of years but I would rather have the integrity. Urban runs a dirty program and no one can deny that. Hope that he changes and doesn’t play Rainey but we are talking about Urban Meyer so I doubt it.

The discrepancy between a driving with a suspended license and a death threat is too far to even try and compare. Do I think Richt needs to do a better job of disciplining his players, yes. That being said, if neither school had any players getting in trouble (which they both do, obviously) a driving with a suspended license and fleeing the accident should still certainly warrant a few game suspension. But a death threat???? I’m sorry son, but your gone. Anyone that sees any different obviously doesn’t have any children.

Seriously, I do not see why there is all this “we`ll see on Thursday” drama
Rainey will play without a doubt, not that this is a shock or anything. I think Meyer made this decision as he was shaking Dan Mullen`s hand after the MSU game. If this idiot was a non-contributor, he would have been shown the door permanently 5 weeks ago. It`s funny Mr. “core values” Meyer decides to reinstate Rainey after two losses with “strict conditions” to be met before any other decision will be made, then after the loss to MSU (1 week later) Meyer decides that Rainey has “met the conditions” to be cleared to play but still not sure. This is called the desperation storm and no Tebow umbrella to hide under this time. If he plays fine, just say it from the get go, instead of this big show. If you gator fans want to call this hating that`s fine because this is what I`m expecting, I just think it is just as bad to say you have moral values then undermine exactly what you supposedly stand for. I just compared uga’s arrest record and florida’s arrest record (as ridiculous as that sounds) and here’s what i came up with. Most of uga’s arrests are underage possession and or traffic incidents. All of uga’s DUI incidents resulted in the player getting kicked off the team or having to leave the program. For florida, they’re arrests involved theft, stalking, resisting arrest, and starting fights. Here’s what I get out of this analysis…uga’s players are college kids, stupid drinking arrests and stupid traffic mistakes. But florida players are punks…they steal, they threaten women, and they start fights. If you love florida so much marietta_dawg, go back because nobody wants a guy like you in this state. I just looked over the arrest records of florida and uga and here’s what i came back with. Uga’s arrests have included, DUI, underage possession, and traffic violations. Everyone who got a DUI was kicked off the team or ultimately left the university. Florida’s arrests have included, stalking, resisting arrest, fighting, threatening women, and theft. Here’s what i draw from that: uga’s arrests make them college kids, making stupid mistakes drinking and stupid traffic mistakes. Florida’s arrests make them punks, threatening women and stealing. Florida’s players are punks. If you love florida so much and your program is so great, go back to florida. Nobody in this state wants you here if you think threatening women is ok. You’re trash. I can’t wait to watch you jort wearing punks walk out of the stadium saturday with your heads down because you lost. Go sit on your thumb you loser. You’re pathetic

Lets see, 11 arrests this year alone in hump town and U G A Y fans want Meyer fired. So to add it all up, The refs cheat uga out of wins, the SEC office cheats them out of wins, they have to travel all the way to Jax every year to get their spanking, and when the Gators win this year it will be because they have a girl friend threatening texter (who didn’t feel threatened). Jeff, I’ve never seen anyone take a sound byte response from Meyer the way you do and use it to your advantage. But then again, who would think that justified/objective/truthful reporting should come from a Georgia paper towards anything Gator related. I believe that Meyer consulted with many in and outside the program before even considering whether he should or should not take him back. I believe the girlfriend was a part of that decision – yes, the one that received the text and wasn’t worried about it. Instead it was her sister that intercepted it and caused the stink. These are afterall, 17-21 year old kids that make mistakes. He was tried in a court of law and he’s serving his penalty accordingly. I think we had a QB that actually acted upon something (not just a text) and people have forgiven him – I believe he’s making millions somewhere right now. Hmm….

POAD, I’m interested in where you found the info on college majors for UGA and GT. Honestly, I’m a little surprised that there are so many GT players in the MGMT and IM programs.

On to another point: I’m not happy at all with the arrests at UGA in the past few years. I certainly agree that the two kids should have been released for the issues with women (although I was surprised by the Mettenberger release). I try to remember what I was like in college…pretty irresponsible as compared to a mature adult, but I knew that if I had a ticket, I had to either pay it or go to court to fight it.

Having said that, I can’t find anyway to equate the Rainey fiasco with anything at UGA other than the Mettenberger and what’s-his-name situations, and they were both dismissed.

I mean, really, have you guys (especially Marietta) even read the police report, or listened to the 911 call? Unbelievable…

To all the holier than thou Georgia fans, I guess you forgot about how Mark Richt treated ODELL THURMOND, your all SEC line backer
According to the incident report, Thurman returned to his room after 3 a.m. on July 20 and became upset after seeing Braxton, who described herself to police as his girlfriend, with another person.
Thurman cursed at Braxton and she left the room but returned after Thurman called for her looking for his room key. Thurman grabbed her purse, breaking the shoulder strap.
Braxton told police she jumped on Thurman to get her purse back and put her arm around his neck. Braxton stated that Thurman then hit her and threw her on the ground but Thurman told police he forced her to the floor to keep her from hitting him. Braxton said Thurman would not allow her to leave the room so she went into a bathroom and exited through a neighbor’s room to a first floor room. Thurman followed to ask for his room key. Braxton made contact with a family member and
Both Thurman and Braxton were “exceptionally cleared” for domestic dispute and affray.
Police chief Jimmy Williamson said that charges would have been filed if Thurman and Braxton were living together.
“The young woman would have been arrested if they were cohabiting,” he said.

Richt said he did not consider kicking Thurman off the team this time despite his past discipline issues. Thurman was dismissed from the team in the spring of his freshman year for off-the-field transgressions that included fights, and attended Georgia Military College for a semester

He was pulled over by Athens-Clarke County police last year and was charged with five misdemeanors, but two were dropped. Thurman paid $200 for an improper lane change and playing music too loudly, but was not fined for failure to carry a driver’s license.
He’s put some really good time in from the time he went to GMC and came back,” Richt said. “He’s made a lot of strides. He just slipped up, so now he’s going to have to pay for it.”

This thug then went on to the NFL and showed why Richt thought he had made a lot of strides.

Thurman was suspended by the National Football League for the first four games of the 2006 regular season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy

On September 27, 2006, the NFL extended Thurman’s suspension for the remainder of the season as a result of the arrest for drunk driving
On July 25, 2007, Thurman’s request for re-instatement into the NFL was denied by commissioner Roger Goodell, so he was not able to play in 2007.[8]
On June 2, 2008, Sports Illustrated reported Thurman, recently cut by the Bengals, had failed his second drug test in three seasons.[13] Four days later, ESPN reported Thurman had been suspended by the NFL indefinitely. As part of the ruling, he could not apply for reinstatement until after the 2008 season.[14]On June 12, 2008, Thurman was indicted by a grand jury for breaking another man’s jaw

can that be said to the habitual violators at UGA? I mean whenever you have a suspended license something had to preempt that by being charged with breaking another crime.

It’s a misdemeanor because Huntley Johnson got it knocked down from a felony. Without Huntley Johnson on the Gator payroll you couldn’t have fielded a team the last 6 years.

FACT; bianchi has it in for the gators and especially meyer……urban and bianchi have mixed it up over a number of issues re players so the writer from orlando loves to stir the pot……
FACT; cam newton stole a students laptop in Oct, 2008, painted it, wrote his name on it, and when police came to his dorm to investigate, he threw it out the window…….he left UF for a combination of reasons including injuries, his felony arrest, and questions re playing time
FACT; during this time of newton’s arrest, meyer did kick a kid off the team arrested for assaulting (hitting) a woman
i know meyer really likes rainey, thinks he’s a good kid who’s never been in or caused trouble, and probably thinks he deserves a second chance……..as a gator alum/fan, i think the big question is the timing for giving, if at all, the second chance……..the reaction is mixed among gator fans on various blogs ranging from the “crime” is so bad he needs to be booted, to give him a chance next season, to letting meyer make the call as each player and situation is different……personally, its understandable the reaction of carol wick and others with such a serious offense ( yes, i have a daughter) and i’m concerned with the message sent with an accelerated reinstatement…..i would prefer more time to pass ( next season?), let CR prove himself with good deeds, introspection, community service (women’s shelter?) and ?therapy……i have a feeling that many of these things are already being done as meyer and the administration handle the situation as an internal team matter……..but boot him off the team with no chance for redemption?…..i’m not close enough to the situation to make that call and will have to trust that the administration at UF will do whats right for all involved including the girl and her family……and remember mutt fans, your new AD has been part of the athletic dept at UF for years and might have a different take on UM……as for the insults being hurled at urban on this blog, they are baseless and merely the result of the warped mentation and judgement of uga fans after the repeated whippings uga has suffered at the hands of the ORANGE and BLUE
GO GATORS…….

DLB, You’re right. ALL programs have problems and issues and coaches that cover things up. A misdemeanor and a felony are different levels of offenses and should be handled as such. They handled differently in “civilian life” and “star football players” for any school should not be excluded from the masses where the consequences are passed out.

Seems EVERYONE is willing to turn a slightly blind eye to things if it will help their own team.

From a selfish fan perspective:
For me, I didn’t want CR to play because I want UGA to have every possible opportunity it can to beat UF. The CR issue was another opportunity for us. So I am saddened the he will play. If a UGA player had done that same thing, I would want him kicked off the team. (After the UF game)

From a moral perspective:
I don’t think any player should remain on the team if that are arrested for a felony. That goes for UGA too. (Lord please don’t let any players do anything stupid before the game). I would want the UGA player kicked off the team immediately if he had done the same thing.

And don’t forget about the Spikes incident. Suspended for a half for “Intentionally trying to gouge someones eyes out”. BS

Hope the Dawgs teach Rainey a lesson he never forgets. I hope every UGA player paints an image of their “Little Sister” on Rainey’s slimey body and hammers it, every play. Maybe letting him play is Karma’s way of payback. Guess we will see.

Red Panties…so two wrongs make a right…i agree that Thurmond was given more chances than he probably deserved….and i think Coach Richt realizes that…your post leaves out an important detail…he didn’t threaten to kill her….”time to die”…doesn’t excuse his behavior but still a life was not threatened..Coach Richt has demonstrated that he will kick players off the team…Mett violated a young lady by putting his hands on her, even if he was drunk, still unexcusable..he also had not been into any trouble before at UGA…I think Coach Richt did the right thing, yet the kid still had a chance to continue his career, but not at georgia…the same should have been done with Rainey..give him another chance, but not at Florida…also, your great LB, Spikes tried to gouge the eyes out of another football player…what kind of punishment did he receive from Meyer…very little and probably would not have received any but Spikes did step up to the plate…The bottom line is both programs have had off field issues with players..whether there should be a “0″ tolerance or not is for the schools to decide..i also truly believe that if the gators were not struggling on the field, that Rainey would not be on the field Sat or this season at all..so to make my point here, whether Coach Richt should or shouldn’t have kicked Thurmond off the team isn’t releative to what Rainey did this season…i think Coach Richt handled similar issues this season with violance against women or anyone with more authority than he might have in the past…Maybe the issues with Thurmond made him look at these issues a little harder, even when he was trying to not give up on a kid…I think Meyer should do the same…doesn’t mean you still can’t help the kid, but allowing him back on the team this season seems a little self serving in my opinion…

Where did you get WALL STREET or JANITORAL? I never said that. I said more GT players take degrees headed to the PRIVET Sector and UGA players are head to the Government provided jobs ie teaching, urban housing, sociology(probation officer check the facts it is the only job in that field that gets a regular paycheck), Child and Family(social worker), Middle School edu, and Education. UGA turns out more teachers than any school in the state of Georgia and just look how the state ranks in education. Enough said. I’m sure you have made them all very proud by displaying what class and integrity all of you possess. You can justify what Rainey did every which way but it still doesn’t change the fact that he did it and needs to be punished accordingly by being kicked off of the team.

Both teams have problems with players. It is the society we live in today.Where has the morals and character that men and women should have are now gone astray.I love UGA and I defend it with all my heart(plus put a lot of money into this place over several years). However we have a problem and FLA. has a problem with players who are recruited with NO character or morals. Both are guilty of winning above what is right and what should be done to a player.I hope in coming years we(UGA) will look at the background and lifestyle the player has exhibited in his past before we recruit him.Yes,Richt has turned down some high school recruits in the past, but we also have accepted some who should not have been signed. So I will not throw stones at the gators, however I will question their judgement. First of all what domestic violence did he actually commit? He texted some words he shouldn’t have but other than that, what? My Lord, if every girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, or husband was arrested for what he, Rainey, on the face of it did, there wouldn’t be enough jails or Harbor Houses to hold them all. There is always culpability on both sides when temper flare and things are said in the heat of the moment. Women can be just as mean, thoughtless, and vindictive as men. Where are the Harbor House for them Ms. Wick or do you think it never happens to them? I believe in redemption and second chances. If we all got what we deserved without redemption, well, is that the kind of reality we really want? Rainey messed up but he doesn’t deserve to be publically vilified by those who pontificate upon high as if they are above any need for their redemption of sins. That which you judge others by will be the same bar that you yourself will be held accountable to in this world or the next. You can take that to the bank.

so marietta gator, you have really laid the law down on all of our underage and dui dawg players. And, if you did take a drink you certainly would have passed the PUBLIC SAFETY .08- .10 alcohol concentration test or you absolutely always used a designated driver. From your speech patterns, I doubt that you were a seminary student either(I know that I wasn’t) but I would suggest you tone down your piousness if you were guilty at their age of doing the same thing/as I, but, maybe lucky , and not getting caught! If your child attends a college/university and is arrested by the REAL police and released on bail should your child not be allowed to go to class at said college/university? There are many people in JAIL that are Innocent and awaiting trial. Now people in PRISON have been found guilty and sentanced. Breaking University and Team rules are subject to College/University/ Team rules, but a Player breaking State, Federal, or County Laws are owed their day in court to decide their guilt. Some of the UGA players were wrong even though they have not been to court to prove their innocence. Not Showing for court is not in question. Driving without a license is a question, but the CMR knew about it an told said player not to drive. MIP and DUI are still needed to be proved in court, but coaches will take heat if they let the player play. TECH had Houston charged with Traffincing Pot, but he was not proven to have done so in a court of law. I know it is a fine line but a player would have a lawsuit if he was nnot alowed to play then found innocent. I don’t know the answer and it is a crazy situation. Rainey should play but the UNC player shouldn’t play. AJ GREEN should have lost his amature status and never have been allowed to play another college game. R. Bush should have to Pay back all the money it cost USC to Feed, House, and Educate him.

Integrity

October 28th, 2010
8:44 am

I’ll say it again…..where is the integrity of college football when a player receives a four game suspension from the NCAA for selling a jersey and other players who threaten lives, or even beat people up and leave them for dead, are allowed to continue to play? Something is really wrong with this picture and it needs to be addressed soon. Leaving matters in the hands of coaches to determine athlete playing time, where serious laws have been blatantly violated, is a huge mistake. Furthermore, why are so many of these case descriptions followed with “no charges were filed”? I think if the NCAA needs something to investigate, here would be an excellent starting point.

Hatfield Geoff

I’m glad to see someone is calling Meyer on this. Mark Richt has gotten 10 times the bad press for having players charged with traffic offenses and not paying traffic fines, than Meyer has over this (and several players over the summer involved in alcohol related incidents). And of course Dooley gets a pass, after letting most of the players involved with assaulting a police officer in a bar off with no punishment. I guess Meyer is lucky the Gainesville Sun doesn’t keep a running talley on the number of legal incidents that Gator players have been involved in; As the AJC does with UGA (I mean a kid gets a ticket for riding a scooter the wrong way on a one-way street, is that even worthy of reporting? The answer, of course, is no its not. But it lets the AJC keep pounding the drum that Richt has “lost Control” No we don’t want players firing uzis from the Mcwhorter Hall balconies. But I would much rather have 10 “Driving with a suspended license” charges against my players than one assault on a women, or an armed robbery or terroristic threat. Take any group of 80 or so young men in college, this side of the Baptist Student Union, and you are going to get about the same number of problems, and in some case worse.

To be honest, I think this is another situation that’s blown way out of proportion. It sounds worse than it really is. Does anyone believe that he was actually going to kill the girl or do you think (like me) that he was just talking s@#$ to show how pissed he was at her for whatever reason. I haven’t read anywhere that he has a violent record or even a record at all so I’m not ready to condemn the kid for what he texted to the girl. He deserves to be reprimanded but give me a break. It’s not like he stole a dead girl’s credit card or something like that that we hear out of Gainesville.

Nearly all of us who went to college and even high school did something stupid. Rainey crossed the line, and most of the comments directed at Coach Meyer cross the line of decent competitiveness.
I recommend the UGA Fans worry about UGA and the same for the UF fans only worry about the Gators. For the UGA fans who live in Fl and hate everything about Fl, please go back to GA which is alos a great state. The same for my FL brethren.
Go gators beat the DAWGS!

Dawg Tell, I totally agree with you. You are a class act. All the best.

Georgia fans are so full of it! Meyer should have kicked Rainey off the team without a doubt. But let me ask a question. How many players has UGA had arrested JUST THIS YEAR? Your whole freaking team was recruited from a jailhouse!

Ok, when is it time to make these athletes take responsibility for any of their actions. They are just passed along from the time they are kids to the time they are men, playing pro sports. You end up with Mike Tysons, who rape women, and Rothlisbergers who are accused of sexual misconduct not once but twice, Michael Vicks who are just as disgusting. You have these kids that can barely read, or write and have no social skills but are elevated above everyone because they can throw a ball, score a touchdown, or knock someone out. When will it ever stop when we have coaches like Myers and many others who are willing to turn a blind eye. So it is only when something horrible happens when we take a stand, but no one will take a stand before the horrors happen

Marietta_Gator – may I suggest that you recall the murder of student athlete Yeardley Love at the University of Virginia by another student athlete? Anyone who threatens the life of another individual (especially a male threatening a female) should be expelled immediately from any school.

Urban Meyer has really exposed himself without any defense on this one.

Urban Renewal has no morals. He only has a public image. Utah is a much better place without his and his wife’s phoniness. If you cannot win with integrity, you really do not win. Urban Renewal has never won a thing…
