Chris Rainey (with football, not cellphone).
Urban Meyer is still on a losing streak — on and off the field.
Any hopes the Florida coach had that the backlash over his decision to reinstate wide receiver Chris Rainey would fade pretty much imploded again.
The latest slam comes from Carol Wick, who runs a domestic violence shelter in Orlando. Wick told Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “I think somebody in sports has got to take a stand. Given Urban Meyer’s well-known moral values, I think it would do a lot of good if he were the first coach to step up and say, ‘No, this is unacceptable behavior. I wouldn’t tolerate it in my home. I wouldn’t want it to happen to my daughter and I’m not going to tolerate it on my team. Violence and threats against women are not acceptable.’ ”
Urban Meyer: Not making friends.
The background: Rainey, the Gators’ wide receiver, sent a text message to his estranged girlfriend: “Time to die, [bleep].”
When Wick was informed that Rainey has been painted as a good guy by Meyer, she responded, “Good guys don’t send threatening text messages telling their girlfriends that it’s time to die.”
Rainey was suspended indefinitely but partially reinstated last week. The expectation is that he will play in Saturday’s game against Georgia in Jacksonville. Meyer said he’ll make that call on Thursday.
The Florida coach, whose team has lost three straight, tried to sound like the tough guy again today. He didn’t pull it off. Speaking on the weekly SEC coaches conference call with media members, he said: “As of now he has done everything he’s supposed to do. … We’re going to keep a tight rein on Chris Rainey. He’s never been an issue before and he certainly better never be again.”
Meyer also echoed some the remarks he had said on Tuesday, saying that the bye week will “result in some changes” to the offense.
Also this: Rainey would play both wide receiver and running back.

Both teams have problems with players. It is the society we live in today.Where has the morals and character that men and women should have are now gone astray.I love UGA and I defend it with all my heart(plus put a lot of money into this place over several years). However we have a problem and FLA. has a problem with players who are recruited with NO character or morals. Both are guilty of winning above what is right and what should be done to a player.I hope in coming years we(UGA) will look at the background and lifestyle the player has exhibited in his past before we recruit him.Yes,Richt has turned down some high school recruits in the past, but we also have accepted some who should not have been signed. So I will not throw stones at the gators, however I will question their judgement. Go DAWGS AND WIN SATURDAY!!

First of all what domestic violence did he actually commit? He texted some words he shouldn’t have but other than that, what? My Lord, if every girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, or husband was arrested for what he, Rainey, on the face of it did, there wouldn’t be enough jails or Harbor Houses to hold them all. There is always culpability on both sides when temper flare and things are said in the heat of the moment. Women can be just as mean, thoughtless, and vindictive as men. Where are the Harbor House for them Ms. Wick or do you think it never happens to them? I believe in redemption and second chances. If we all got what we deserved without redemption, well, is that the kind of reality we really want? Rainey messed up but he doesn’t deserve to be publically vilified by those who pontificate upon high as if they are above any need for their redemption of sins. That which you judge others by will be the same bar that you yourself will be held accountable to in this world or the next. You can take that to the bank.

I agree with From Where I Sit comments:
“This is all about winning and I do not want to hear freaking excuses about Newton. Bottom line: he was a thief, and he got caught! Believe what you want to believe but that is the reason he left as he got more playing time when Tebow was there than Brantley, so explain that!
Gators will win big with or without Rainey as the lack luster done nothing program that has not done jack in 30 years will lose again!”

I am just saying Ben Jones did receive some punishment for his atempt to HURT a Miss St player. I never said it fit the crime. I just stated the fact that Ben Jones did get called out by Richt and the UGA staff.

I never hear about a Golfer, GYM girl, Equestrian, or Tennis player having these issues the Foolball and Basketball players have. Do you think it has something to do with the type of sport or culture that these players grow-up in or we creat around these sports?

Gotcha, 5150. Really not directed at you, just making the point that Meyer and Richt gave the same punishment for dirty play, and people like “sec fan” still take shots at Urban for his “ridiculous” leniency, but somehow overlook the Jones punishment.

so marietta gator, you have really laid the law down on all of our underage and dui dawg players. What you are implying from the harshness of your judgement is that you either never went to college and had a drink under the age of 21. And, if you did take a drink you certainly would have passed the PUBLIC SAFETY .08- .10 alcohol concentration test or you absolutely always used a designated driver. From your speech patterns, I doubt that you were a seminary student either(I know that I wasn’t) but I would suggest you tone down your piousness if you were guilty at their age of doing the same thing/as I, but, maybe lucky , and not getting caught! Maybe Clark County now has better policemen/women than “our” other SEC counterparts? You think? Or, the Athens chief of police is secretly the son/daughter of Jan Kemp!!!!! Will we ever get over this woman!!!!!!!!!!! Just Kidding! Go DAWGS!!!!!!

If your child attends a college/university and is arrested by the REAL police and released on bail should your child not be allowed to go to class at said college/university? There are many people in JAIL that are Innocent and awaiting trial. Now people in PRISON have been found guilty and sentanced. Breaking University and Team rules are subject to College/University/ Team rules, but a Player breaking State, Federal, or County Laws are owed their day in court to decide their guilt. Some of the UGA players were wrong even though they have not been to court to prove their innocence. Not Showing for court is not in question. Driving without a license is a question, but the CMR knew about it an told said player not to drive. MIP and DUI are still needed to be proved in court, but coaches will take heat if they let the player play. TECH had Houston charged with Traffincing Pot, but he was not proven to have done so in a court of law. I know it is a fine line but a player would have a lawsuit if he was nnot alowed to play then found innocent. I don’t know the answer and it is a crazy situation. Rainey should play but the UNC player shouldn’t play. AJ GREEN should have lost his amature status and never have been allowed to play another college game. R. Bush should have to Pay back all the money it cost USC to Feed, House, and Educate him.

Did you hear the Mel Gibson tapes? Mel is still walking the streets and working to advance his life. Why shouldn’t Rainey get the same chance until his court date? If he is found Guilty or Innocent, or have the charges reduces then why did you make his life stop? Hell, TED KENNEDY lived a great life after letting a girl die because he was too scared to HELP. OJ got away with killing the mother of his children and he gets to chase down the killer on golf courses around the US.

Meyer previously booted Gary Brown, IMMEDIATELY for a threat in person…In addition has anyone mentioned much about the fact he had just suffered from a concussion? I don’t condone what he said at all..However, is Rainey the only person in the world who has said something they wish they could take back??? Count me guilty too!!

One opinion, yes. Well, speaking strictly for myself, I am pathetic – ask Falcon Jim, but I am not sad. Not as long as my insurance pays for my meds.
“A question from the bleachers” is and interesting posting name, A question from the bleachers. You’re kinda putting yourself above the fray, when actually, you’re down here in the muck with the rest of us – although you seem ashamed somehow.

And all these people bringing up well, if it was Urban’s daughter BS. …What if it was YOUR SON! Yeah, I hear you ..HE was just upset and He did not mean and He didn’t do anything and the girl didn’t want to press charges and stated so from the beginning… No win situation for Meyer and glad he gave the kid a second chance on a first offense with no physical violence… You hypocrites kill me…Nooo no of you have ever said something stupid when upset with said mate. Integrity
October 28th, 2010
8:44 am
I’ll say it again…..where is the integrity of college football when a player receives a four game suspension from the NCAA for selling a jersey and other players who threaten lives, or even beat people up and leave them for dead, are allowed to continue to play? Something is really wrong with this picture and it needs to be addressed soon. Leaving matters in the hands of coaches to determine athlete playing time, where serious laws have been blatantly violated, is a huge mistake. Furthermore, why are so many of these case descriptions followed with “no charges were filed”? I think if the NCAA needs something to investigate, here would be an excellent starting point.

I’m glad to see someone is calling Meyer on this. Mark Richt has gotten 10 times the bad press for having players charged with traffic offenses and not paying traffic fines, than Meyer has over this (and several players over the summer involved in alcohol related incidents). And of course Dooley gets a pass, after letting most of the players involved with assaulting a police officer in a bar off with no punishment. I guess Meyer is lucky the Gainesville Sun doesn’t keep a running talley on the number of legal incidents that Gator players have been involved in; As the AJC does with UGA (I mean a kid gets a ticket for riding a scooter the wrong way on a one-way street, is that even worthy of reporting? The answer, of course, is no its not. But it lets the AJC keep pounding the drum that Richt has “lost Control” No we don’t want players firing uzis from the Mcwhorter Hall balconies. But I would much rather have 10 “Driving with a suspended license” charges against my players than one assault on a women, or an armed robbery or terroristic threat. Take any group of 80 or so young men in college, this side of the Baptist Student Union, and you are going to get about the same number of problems, and in some case worse.
