Urban Meyer slammed again for Chris Rainey decision

Chris Rainey (with football, not cellphone).

Chris Rainey (with football, not cellphone).

Urban Meyer is still on a losing streak — on and off the field.

Any hopes the Florida coach had that the backlash over his decision to reinstate wide receiver Chris Rainey would fade pretty much imploded again.

The latest slam comes from Carol Wick, who runs a domestic violence shelter in Orlando. Wick told Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “I think somebody in sports has got to take a stand. Given Urban Meyer’s well-known moral values, I think it would do a lot of good if he were the first coach to step up and say, ‘No, this is unacceptable behavior. I wouldn’t tolerate it in my home. I wouldn’t want it to happen to my daughter and I’m not going to tolerate it on my team. Violence and threats against women are not acceptable.’ ”

Urban Meyer: Not making friends.

Urban Meyer: Not making friends.

The background: Rainey, the Gators’ wide receiver, sent a text message to his estranged girlfriend: “Time to die, [bleep].”

When Wick was informed that Rainey has been painted as a good guy by Meyer, she responded, “Good guys don’t send threatening text messages telling their girlfriends that it’s time to die.”

Rainey was suspended indefinitely but partially reinstated last week. The expectation is that he will play in Saturday’s game against Georgia in Jacksonville. Meyer said he’ll make that call on Thursday.

The Florida coach, whose team has lost three straight, tried to sound like the tough guy again today. He didn’t pull it off. Speaking on the weekly SEC coaches conference call with media members, he said: “As of now he has done everything he’s supposed to do. … We’re going to keep a tight rein on Chris Rainey. He’s never been an issue before and he certainly better never be again.”

Meyer also echoed some the remarks he had said on Tuesday, saying that the bye week will “result in some changes” to the offense.

Also this: Rainey would play both wide receiver and running back.

People Have you EVER EVR said something during a breakup of Divorce that you regret? Emotions of the HEART are not always Actions of the hands. Hell, OJ got away with it, but who really knew he was that crazy. I will bet there are many men the were Filed for Divorce against that drove by their Ex or soon to be Ex-wives house to see how was “Hitting That”. My Ex came to my buddy’s house to see what I was doing. She sat on the road off the cul-de-sac to follow me home to make sure I was not taking a women home or heading to the Shoe Show. that is STALKING, but women never get charged with that.

Jeff, I’ve never seen anyone take a sound byte response from Meyer the way you do and use it to your advantage. But then again, who would think that justified/objective/truthful reporting should come from a Georgia paper towards anything Gator related. I believe that Meyer consulted with many in and outside the program before even considering whether he should or should not take him back. I believe the girlfriend was a part of that decision – yes, the one that received the text and wasn’t worried about it. Instead it was her sister that intercepted it and caused the stink. These are afterall, 17-21 year old kids that make mistakes. He was tried in a court of law and he’s serving his penalty accordingly. I think we had a QB that actually acted upon something (not just a text) and people have forgiven him – I believe he’s making millions somewhere right now. Hmm….

POAD, I’m interested in where you found the info on college majors for UGA and GT. Honestly, I’m a little surprised that there are so many GT players in the MGMT and IM programs.

On to another point: I’m not happy at all with the arrests at UGA in the past few years. I certainly agree that the two kids should have been released for the issues with women (although I was surprised by the Mettenberger release). I try to remember what I was like in college…pretty irresponsible as compared to a mature adult, but I knew that if I had a ticket, I had to either pay it or go to court to fight it.

Having said that, I can’t find anyway to equate the Rainey fiasco with anything at UGA other than the Mettenberger and what’s-his-name situations, and they were both dismissed.

I mean, really, have you guys (especially Marietta) even read the police report, or listened to the 911 call? Unbelievable…

To all the holier than thou Georgia fans, I guess you forgot about how Mark Richt treated ODELL THURMOND, your all SEC line backer
According to the incident report, Thurman returned to his room after 3 a.m. on July 20 and became upset after seeing Braxton, who described herself to police as his girlfriend, with another person.
Thurman cursed at Braxton and she left the room but returned after Thurman called for her looking for his room key. Thurman grabbed her purse, breaking the shoulder strap.
Braxton told police she jumped on Thurman to get her purse back and put her arm around his neck. Braxton stated that Thurman then hit her and threw her on the ground but Thurman told police he forced her to the floor to keep her from hitting him. Braxton said Thurman would not allow her to leave the room so she went into a bathroom and exited through a neighbor’s room to a first floor room. Thurman followed to ask for his room key. Braxton made contact with a family member and
Both Thurman and Braxton were “exceptionally cleared” for domestic dispute and affray.
Police chief Jimmy Williamson said that charges would have been filed if Thurman and Braxton were living together.
“The young woman would have been arrested if they were cohabiting,” he said.

Richt said he did not consider kicking Thurman off the team this time despite his past discipline issues. Thurman was dismissed from the team in the spring of his freshman year for off-the-field transgressions that included fights, and attended Georgia Military College for a semester

He was pulled over by Athens-Clarke County police last year and was charged with five misdemeanors, but two were dropped. Thurman paid $200 for an improper lane change and playing music too loudly, but was not fined for failure to carry a driver’s license.
He’s put some really good time in from the time he went to GMC and came back,” Richt said. “He’s made a lot of strides. He just slipped up, so now he’s going to have to pay for it.”

This thug then went on to the NFL and showed why Richt thought he had made a lot of strides.

Thurman was suspended by the National Football League for the first four games of the 2006 regular season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy

On September 27, 2006, the NFL extended Thurman’s suspension for the remainder of the season as a result of the arrest for drunk driving
On July 25, 2007, Thurman’s request for re-instatement into the NFL was denied by commissioner Roger Goodell, so he was not able to play in 2007.[8]
On June 2, 2008, Sports Illustrated reported Thurman, recently cut by the Bengals, had failed his second drug test in three seasons.[13] Four days later, ESPN reported Thurman had been suspended by the NFL indefinitely. As part of the ruling, he could not apply for reinstatement until after the 2008 season.[14]On June 12, 2008, Thurman was indicted by a grand jury for breaking another man’s jaw

Is a Misdemeanor a misdemeanor? Rainey was not charged with a Felony…so he made a stupid statement—most college kids have, hell Rainey has NEVER been in trouble with the law before.

can that be said to the habitual violators at UGA? I mean whenever you have a suspended license something had to preempt that by being charged with breaking another crime.

It’s a misdemeanor because Huntley Johnson got it knocked down from a felony. Without Huntley Johnson on the Gator payroll you couldn’t have fielded a team the last 6 years.

It takes some work but if you go to Ramblinwreck.com, then the football team roster you can check each players BIO. Many list their major or if they are still RS Fresh or less some say what they wish to major in. That is why UGA players have so many PRE…… enter major. The players are taking core classes, but some players take core classes that better suit a particular degree path.

So you are telling me that all football players that graduate from tech are way more qualified for the “big” jobs then the UGA players are. And those tech players will go onto wallstreet type work while UGA players will be doing janitorial work because tech players are demanded to take the same courses as other Engineering students. FACT; bianchi has it in for the gators and especially meyer……urban and bianchi have mixed it up over a number of issues re players so the writer from orlando loves to stir the pot……
FACT; cam newton stole a students laptop in Oct, 2008, painted it, wrote his name on it, and when police came to his dorm to investigate, he threw it out the window…….he left UF for a combination of reasons including injuries, his felony arrest, and questions re playing time
FACT; during this time of newton’s arrest, meyer did kick a kid off the team arrested for assaulting (hitting) a woman
i know meyer really likes rainey, thinks he’s a good kid who’s never been in or caused trouble, and probably thinks he deserves a second chance……..as a gator alum/fan, i think the big question is the timing for giving, if at all, the second chance……..the reaction is mixed among gator fans on various blogs ranging from the “crime” is so bad he needs to be booted, to give him a chance next season, to letting meyer make the call as each player and situation is different……personally, its understandable the reaction of carol wick and others with such a serious offense ( yes, i have a daughter) and i’m concerned with the message sent with an accelerated reinstatement…..i would prefer more time to pass ( next season?), let CR prove himself with good deeds, introspection, community service (women’s shelter?) and ?therapy……i have a feeling that many of these things are already being done as meyer and the administration handle the situation as an internal team matter……..but boot him off the team with no chance for redemption?…..i’m not close enough to the situation to make that call and will have to trust that the administration at UF will do whats right for all involved including the girl and her family……and remember mutt fans, your new AD has been part of the athletic dept at UF for years and might have a different take on UM……as for the insults being hurled at urban on this blog, they are baseless and merely the result of the warped mentation and judgement of uga fans after the repeated whippings uga has suffered at the hands of the ORANGE and BLUE
GO GATORS…….

DLB, You’re right. ALL programs have problems and issues and coaches that cover things up. A misdemeanor and a felony are different levels of offenses and should be handled as such. They handled differently in “civilian life” and “star football players” for any school should not be excluded from the masses where the consequences are passed out.

Seems EVERYONE is willing to turn a slightly blind eye to things if it will help their own team.

From a selfish fan perspective:
For me, I didn’t want CR to play because I want UGA to have every possible opportunity it can to beat UF. The CR issue was another opportunity for us. So I am saddened the he will play. If a UGA player had done that same thing, I would want him kicked off the team. (After the UF game)

From a moral perspective:
I don’t think any player should remain on the team if that are arrested for a felony. That goes for UGA too. (Lord please don’t let any players do anything stupid before the game). I would want the UGA player kicked off the team immediately if he had done the same thing.

And don’t forget about the Spikes incident. Suspended for a half for “Intentionally trying to gouge someones eyes out”. BS

Hope the Dawgs teach Rainey a lesson he never forgets. I hope every UGA player paints an image of their “Little Sister” on Rainey’s slimey body and hammers it, every play. Maybe letting him play is Karma’s way of payback. Guess we will see.
