Urban Meyer slammed again for Chris Rainey decision

Chris Rainey (with football, not cellphone).

Chris Rainey (with football, not cellphone).

Urban Meyer is still on a losing streak — on and off the field.

Any hopes the Florida coach had that the backlash over his decision to reinstate wide receiver Chris Rainey would fade pretty much imploded again.

The latest slam comes from Carol Wick, who runs a domestic violence shelter in Orlando. Wick told Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel: “I think somebody in sports has got to take a stand. Given Urban Meyer’s well-known moral values, I think it would do a lot of good if he were the first coach to step up and say, ‘No, this is unacceptable behavior. I wouldn’t tolerate it in my home. I wouldn’t want it to happen to my daughter and I’m not going to tolerate it on my team. Violence and threats against women are not acceptable.’ ”

Urban Meyer: Not making friends.

Urban Meyer: Not making friends.

The background: Rainey, the Gators’ wide receiver, sent a text message to his estranged girlfriend: “Time to die, [bleep].”

When Wick was informed that Rainey has been painted as a good guy by Meyer, she responded, “Good guys don’t send threatening text messages telling their girlfriends that it’s time to die.”

Rainey was suspended indefinitely but partially reinstated last week. The expectation is that he will play in Saturday’s game against Georgia in Jacksonville. Meyer said he’ll make that call on Thursday.

The Florida coach, whose team has lost three straight, tried to sound like the tough guy again today. He didn’t pull it off. Speaking on the weekly SEC coaches conference call with media members, he said: “As of now he has done everything he’s supposed to do. … We’re going to keep a tight rein on Chris Rainey. He’s never been an issue before and he certainly better never be again.”

Meyer also echoed some the remarks he had said on Tuesday, saying that the bye week will “result in some changes” to the offense.

Also this: Rainey would play both wide receiver and running back.

If a regular student stole a motorcycle helmet and plagarized an English paper, he or she would have received more than a LA Lafayette game suspension. Georgia fans certainly can’t criticize Meyer for doing what Richt has done for ten years.

@Marietta_Gator: Then you might want to try one more time in “Ethics” because I know plenty of UF alums with kids at UF who aren’t happy with UM right know with the Rainey situation..

J Clay is it a death threat? He NEVER SAID: I want to kill you, or anything–just a simple: “Time to Die”………and trust me UGA’s arrest are not all speeding tickets…..hell none of them are, they consist of multiple charges per incident, DUI (which is basically telling the world OK I am ready to kill you as I drive)…

I have a great idea. Why don’t all the UGA and GT fans that like to post on the AJC.com meet at the Atalnta Community Food Bank the Friday after Thanksgiving to help sort food, help the poor, and talk crap the day before the game. It would let all of us meet and drop some of the Behind the Screen hatred.

To make you Dawg fans happy I have said I think UGA will win a close game. I think UGA special Teams make a Special play. UGA 21 UF 17. A huge kick return may be the difference.

I think Richt learned the hard way that some of these kids need to move on and not be part of the program. Too much too late.

What is UF’s policy for the general student body for something like this?

You know if someone on his team did that to his daughter he would have that punk run out of town. Meyer is a disgusting, “win at any cost” coach. Maybe karma is finally catching up with him and that’s why UF all once isn’t on top.

5150 P.O.A.D USA Today now has UGA tied with UF as the #56 school in the nation. I’m not sure where you get your information from.

Marietta_Gator I have no doubt that you are a Florida grad. That is why you live in Marietta and you are not selling saltwater taffy at the beach or oranges off of I-75. I just wish you guys were a little more gracious guest in our state.

Marietta Gator – If you will read my comments – I suggest a zero tolerance policy on DUI, regardless of team, starter or non-starter. That is one thing we can agree on – that is a death threat. How you can’t tell the other one is and sit here defending Rainey is beyond me…I also suggested that any 2nd violations that are not of the physical or threatening nature also be dismissed from the team…Ie, I was in favor of kicking Caleb King off the team to send a message. You are so blinded it pathetic – similar to a lot of political discussions in this country.

While the Dawgs players have had their issues as well, there is no way you can condone what Rainet texted. If he had sent that to Urban Meyer’s daughter at Tech, Meyer would have been ready to strangle him. You hurt or threaten women and children you should be gone no if, ands or buts about it!

Cut Meyer some slack. For that matter, give Ricked a break too!!!

The Truth: If these two schools didn’t play with their players who have rap sheets, then the water boys (or girl, in UGAg’s case) would be out there playing flag football … or something.

Just change the name from the “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” to the “Teams with the Longest Rap Sheets Bowl”.

Bail Bondsmen in Gainesville, Athens, and Jacksonville would make GREAT TV sponsors for this one. Maybe the Georgia DMV could purchase a few spots as well … promoting a “Did you know you need a valid driver’s license to drive?” campaign.

Phil Fulmer could do some PSA’s promoting the “2011 Fulmer Cup” and congratulating the mutts on winning the 2010 edition !!!

Should be fun!!!

Have you ever heard all the words in rap music, they are much worse than what Rainy said. I think both are terrible, but women aren’t respected in that culture and they think nothing of talking the way they do. Just like they don’t put much value in education, so trash talk is second nature and you get this crap.

1.) florida would wish Murray was their QB by the time we play each other
2.) florida would lose at least 3 or 4 games.
3.) Brantley is a square peg in a round hole running the spread
4.) Rainey would be reinstated by the Georgia game
5.) No Tebow=no titles

Meyer will play Rainey because he needs his speed to help them win…why does this surprise anyone (including Gator fans)? And later on when Rainey does something else stupid, Meyer will have to defend leaving him on the team. Players rarely stop at just committing one stupid crime and will eventually repeat the offensive behavior within a few months.

As for the game, here’s an acronym that we’ve used for years, and if you can figure it out then feel free to use it too: FADG! :-)

Urban should have kicked him off the team just like several UGA players should have been kicked off the team. UGA fans don’t really have a moral compass to hold here. The SEC in general has pretty much shown that winning is more important then anything and I do mean anything. If a player is not physically in jail then they are playing on Saturday.

The discrepancy between a driving with a suspended license and a death threat is too far to even try and compare. Do I think Richt needs to do a better job of disciplining his players, yes. That being said, if neither school had any players getting in trouble (which they both do, obviously) a driving with a suspended license and fleeing the accident should still certainly warrant a few game suspension. But a death threat???? I’m sorry son, but your gone. Anyone that sees any different obviously doesn’t have any children.

I can’t contol who is on the team – I can only ask and plead that they be kicked off. I’m not sitting here defending them…I even suggested Caleb King get kicked off the team for a suspended license arrest…There is too much BS going on at all the schools – UGA included…I know the last guy that got DUI was kicked off the team – hoping that starts a new trend at ALL schools.

I’m surprised that the fact that the “girl” in question was really a 34 year old woman. It’s uncommon for a standout college athlete to date a woman 13 yrs his senior. There’s more to this story, I’m surprised it hasn’t come out.

I did find it comical that the lady said she never felt threatened by Rainey and didn’t want to press charges, but yet she called 911… Sounds like some big $ boosters got to her quickly.
