Georgia defenders tried to psyche themselves up during warm-ups last year but still got rocked.
ATHENS — This isn’t about losses. This is about humiliation.
Losses come by a field goal or a touchdown. Humiliation comes when an opponent regularly rolls up point totals in the 30s and 40s and is so comfortably ahead so early that the opposing quarterback is waving a towel and leading cheers in the third quarter.
The problem with the Georgia-Florida “rivalry” is that scores like 45-13, 52-17 and 49-10 don’t scream rivalry — they just scream, like the creepy Edvard Munch painting of the same name. That pale-looking creature with his hands on his face and his mouth hanging open resembles the average Bulldogs fan traveling home from Jacksonville.
The Bulldogs have a chance to change that this week. They go into the Florida game with the better quarterback, the better running attack and certainly the better recent results. But Saturday may be less about Aaron Murray, Washaun Ealey and the contrasting directions of the Dogs (three-game winning streak) and Gators (three-game losing streak) than it is about this: defense.

This guy just came from the last Georgia-Florida game.
Florida has won the last two meetings by scores of 49-10 and 41-17. They have won 17 of the last 20 meetings, scoring 30 or more points 12 times, 40 or more six times and 50-plus twice. In only three of the last 20 meetings has the Georgia defense held Florida under 20.
During and since the Dogs’ four-game slide, coach Mark Richt has stressed the need for his team to be more aggressive and physical. He brought in defensive coordinator Todd Grantham in part to help that cause. Too often under Willie Martinez, Georgia was too easy to play against.
If the Bulldogs truly want to end the humiliation, it starts on defense.
They’ll never have a better chance. Urban Meyer doesn’t have Tim Tebow any more, and his offense has tumbled to 89th in the nation. The Gators are looking up to Kansas, Louisiana-Lafayette and Eastern Michigan.
Mark Richt hopes Todd Grantham has the right plan this year.
Mississippi State held Florida to seven points. That’s 34 less than Georgia held it to last year.
Cornerback Sanders Commings said of that 41-17 loss, “It was sickening, really.”
His lingering memory from the last meeting wasn’t a Florida touchdown but Tebow leading the Gators fans in cheers.
“He was running up and down the sideline, pumping the fans up after they got a big lead on us,” he said. “It was like the third quarter and they were already celebrating.”
Most of Grantham’s background is in the NFL but he was aware enough about Georgia-Florida history to bring it up to players when he arrived in Athens.
“He brought up Florida even before we had played our first game,” Commings said. “He brought up Florida at our first meeting back in the summer.”
What did he say?
“It was, ‘If you want to kick Florida’s [rear], you better start working now.’”
The Dogs were run on by South Carolina (189 rushing yards) and passed on by Arkansas (380 yards). They allowed 11 touchdowns in the losses to Arkansas, Mississippi State and Colorado.
The defense has improved since. What we can’t know is to what degree Tennessee’s and Vanderbilt’s ineptitude impacted the lopsided wins of 41-14 and 43-0. Some concern returned last week when Kentucky converted nine of 15 third-down situations and rolled up four touchdowns and 353 passing yards.
When asked about Florida’s struggles, Richt wouldn’t bite. Allowing 90 points in two meetings would make any coach gun shy. He even called Florida a “great football team,” words not being spoken these days in Gainesville.
“Florida has won the East I don’t know how many years in a row,” he said.
Actually only two, Mark. It just seems longer.
Richt again: “They’re still a team that controls their own destiny. There’s no doubt we need to step it up [defensively]. The bottom line is we need to continue to improve. The last three weeks our goal has been to play better, to play more physical and practice more physical.”
This is the week to show it.

Don’t bet against a winning streak.
Even though the Las Vegas oddsmakers say Georgia is a 3-point favorite against Florida this weekend, there are more than a few things working in the Gators’ favor.
The most obvious one is how they’ve dominated this rivalry. Florida has won 17 of the last 20 meetings.
But Florida coach Urban Meyer has a few things working in his favor, too.
The Gators are coming off a bye, and Meyer is 31-3 (.912) in his career when having more than a week to prepare for a game, and that includes a 16-1 record at Florida.
Also, he’s 16-1 against Florida’s traditional rivals (Florida State, Georgia, Miami and Tennessee) with eight consecutive wins. His only loss came to Georgia in 2007 when the Bulldogs won 42-30.

Too many missed tackles against Kentucky for my liking. Fortunately Florida sucks something awful. Some think they are just going to turn on some switch because they are Florida. Not happening. We’re 8 weeks in to the season. If they haven’t found an offense by now its probably because it is freaking there.

Their defense has held us in check in the majority of games. We turned the ball over and struggled to score in most games. That’s the biggest factor in the Gators edged over Richt.
The kids playing now don’t care about what happened 5 years ago…if we win sat the series will be at 2-2 over last 4.There is no mental block with the current bunch. The seniors and RS JR have already won in Jax.

Nice cut and paste from Chris Lowe’s article on ESPN. If you couldn’t come up with your own original idea, you should have at least attributed your “post” to its source.
Regardless, Florida is going to get a beat-down this weekend by UGA. UGA is absolutely humming on offense, and two weeks of practice by UF isn’t going to make a bit of defense. The sheer fact of the matter is that Florida doesn’t have enough playmakers, and neither Brantley or Burton can properly run their offense.
Finally, Georgia is hungary for a big win over Florida. They smell blood in the water, and after the stunts UF has pulled the past two years, Urban Crier and his reptiles better hold on. You know what they say…payback is he l l…

A couple examples of Tech “fans” being hypocritical:
IF UGA beats UF this weekend, Tech “fans” will still be on our blogs next week saying things to the effect of “Florida still owns you” or “That’s only 4 wins in the last 21 years against Florida, you thugs still suck!”…… But when Tech beat UGA for the first time in 8 years back in 2008, they apparently “OWNED” us……
Also, when we make fun of Tech for playing Thursday nights (LOL), they claim it’s GREAT National exposure, and they wouldn’t have it any other way. But you watch, if UGA is chosen to play a Thursday night game (and after our record this year, yes, it’s possible), they will point and laugh at us as if it were a disgrace and a punishment.
Hate runs thick between UGA and Tech….. Jealousy only runs thick at Tech.

Florida had about 26 extra weeks (from Spring Practice) to get ready for Miami (OH), and their offense looked terrible. I think in some years the off week really helps in this series, but right now Georgia is on a hot streak and needs to keep playing and Florida isn’t all of a sudden going to show up with Tebow and Harvin in the backfield because they had an extra week off. It’s time for Georgia to drop the excuse-making and defeatist attitude in this game and get after Florida for four quarters. Don’t quit like we did early in the 3rd QT in ‘08. If we lose, fine, but at least go down playing hard and loose and having fun. Skip the endzone celebrations, please.

Not sure that the extra week will help our offense at all. The playcalling has been suspect (a kind way of putting it). Until I see UF play 4 quarters of football, then I won’t predict a win against any team we have left on the schedule. I don’t mind losing….I just hate losing because we played so poorly. It’s one thing to get beaten by a better team. It’s another to self-destruct. That’s what has happened to my Gators all year. Thanks GTDog, I’m also known by my other monker, Ed. Whenever I hear a talking head ask an analyst what the “keys to the game” are, my first though is always “score more points that the other team.” Instead, we get the usual banal chatter about “controlling the line of scrimmage,” “establishing the run to set up the play-action passes” and “converting on 3rd down.” Blah blah blah. Truth is, no one knows how a game will turn out or what factors will push one team over the top.

The Dawgs played the 2008 game emotionally burdened with CMR’s shame for the 2007 end zone dance.
After the 08 drubbing by the Gators, CMR felt the need to seek motivation by Grambling-izing UGA’s uni’s – you’d have thought the 08 results would have been motivation enough.
Mementos of both games will always have a conspicuous place of display in the lobby of the UGA Hall of Shame.
It’s 2010 and CMR can’t seem to muster recollection of the contest’s recent history – UGA won in 2007 Coach.
Coach Urban’s regal robes have been soiled a bit this year. No Tim Tebow – no Charleston Southern or Troy or Florida International on the schedule, either. But he’s still Coach Urban; it’s still mid-Autumn; it’s still Jacksonville, it’s still the Gators and the Dawgs; and it’s still Meyer v Richt.
Does anybody really believe that UF will lose four in a row? After a bye week? And to a team led by CMR?

John
October 27th, 2010

The Dawgs played the 2008 game burdened with their coach’s shame for the previous year’s win – it was sullied by the end zone dance and all.
Seems the drubbing of ‘08 wasn’t motivation enough for the 2009 game, so CMR deployed Grambling-ized uni’s to give the fellas a pre-game boost of enthusiasm.
We know all-too-well the results of those games. Mementos for each occupy the display case in the lobby of the UGA Football Hall of Shame.
Now it’s 2010. Coach Urban’s regal robes have been soiled a bit. It’s a different time. It’s a tougher time. The Tim Tebow era is no more. And this year’s schedule is missing the Murderer’s Row of Charleston Southern, Troy and Florida International.
It’s 2010 and CMR can’t seem to remember the last time the Dawgs won at the World’s Biggest Outdoor Party. It was 2007, Coach! Put your guilt over the dance to bed for crissakes!
UF has lost three games in a row. They’re coming off a bye week. Coach Urban’s got something to prove. CMR seems to be struggling with memory issues. It’s still another mid-Autumn Saturday in Jacksonville. It’s still Gators v Dawgs. It’s still Meyer v Richt.
Does anybody really believe when this Saturday ends, Florida will have added one more loss to their streak? Does anybody really believe this Saturday in Jacksonville will be any different from 17 of the last 20?

Well, I won’t be there, but I’ll be rooting for the Dawgs. I’ll be roaming in Sonny’s back yard while that all-white weirdo rests on his ice bag. The key to the game, in my opinion, will be trying to keep any of our players from being blinded in a tackle pile. If all of them can emerge on every play with both eyes functioning, we’re a shoo-in.

I feel better about the D than I have in years. Bobo needs to help the D by being aggressive and scoring lots of points.
The 3-and-outs that result from Bobo’s I-formation plays (that gain little or no yardage) put too much pressure on our D, from too much time on the field, to giving the D poor field position to work with.
So, yeah, the D has to play better, but Bobo has to keep attacking UF. I would like to see a few more passes in the end zone when we get to the red zone, instead of the run, run, pass, sequence of plays he usually calls.
Go Dawgs!

Fortunately, the Ga D gets to play against maybe the worst offense in the SEC. Grantham’s 3-4 D will be harassing Brantley all day—look for 2-3 INTs and a bunch of sacks. Their running game is terrible, so I don’t see UF putting more than 13 points. Ga wins easy: 37-13.

Does GT even still have a football team?
Yes. The thing is… Tech alumni and fans have lives that don’t depend entirely on what a bunch of kids does on Saturday afternoons. College sports are fun to follow, but the biggest reason for going to college is to get an education.
UGA fans don’t seem to care about anything but football, and they don’t care if their players are enrolled in silly majors that no parents who are paying the bills would send their kids to UGA for. The very few football and basketball players who graduate have no job opportunities and end up unemployed or working in menial jobs that hardly require a college degree.
Georgia Tech is a real school with serious academic standards, and that includes scholarshipped athletes. UGA has a long history of being a party school, where parents send their kids for an easy degree, even if the degree itself is practically worthless.
Jan Kemp exposed the crap going on at UGA with athletes being enrolled in courses a ten-year-old kid could pass. That was almost three decades ago, and nothing has changed. If anything, the abuses are more blatant today. Way too many illiterate morons are being recruited, and the very high arrest rate shows clearly that Richt does not care if his players have any morals or self-discipline.
The bottom line is that most Tech fans have very good jobs and productive lives that don’t depend on Tech’s football record for their happiness in life. It would be great to beat UGA more often, but when you put scholar-athletes up against dummy-athletes, it’s usually no contest.
It’s pretty pathetic to see UGA fans who typically have never been within miles of a college classroom and who live or die with UGA’s weekly results on the football field.
So keep on posting your “30-24″ all you want, especially since you’re home with plenty of time on your hands. I wish you well, maybe you’ll get lucky and get your old job back at the Waffle House before your unemployment checks stop coming.

CTG “It was, ‘If you want to kick Florida’s [rear], you better start working now.’”
CMR “The bottom line is we need to continue to improve. The last three weeks our goal has been to play better, to play more physical and practice more physical.”
I’m tired of CMR’s worn out cliches. The last three weeks for the love of football? This football team should have gotten down to business long before this season started. Our start this year was pathetic, abyssmal, unacceptable ! ! ! Remember three years ago when we beat the Gators? Urban Meyer had his team on the field that next Sunday morning, for a year the Gators were punished, pushed for that loss. Reminded of it daily. Look at the results he got. Have you ever seen anything like that happen in Athens during the CMR era. Yeah, we stop two a days. Why do you think this team has “a lack of toughness” about it?
The Gators are down this year, but I’ve got a feeling they still have a bite.

Dawgs celebrate TD’s (with silly dances!) and have blackout’s, red thong games, etc. Gators simply beat the pups down and celebrate SEC titles (they should rename that place in Atlanta – the Florida Dome, it’s not like Georgia Dome is very reflective of anything) and National Championships. They just have to find that right combination on the field to click. One thing for sure is the dawgs better come out playing their best game this year, anything less than perfect and we will get chomped again.

I was passing through Knoxville last week and stopped at the beer hall off of Kingston Pike. Some young charismatic guy named Dooley was on the table giving a speech. I thought to myself he may make a great football coach someday. What a motivator. Us against the world type of speech.

My Concern - Facts
October 27th, 2010
11:01 am
My concern, as it has been for the last 20 years, is UF having an open date and fresh legs before our meeting. Dawg fans, here is a reality check. The reason we owned UF for all those years wasn’t that we were that much better or even better at times but that prior to 1990, WE either had an off week before the UF game like they have now or we were playing Vandy when they were really bad. During those days, UF was coming off an annual war with Auburn and was tired and it typically showed in the 2nd half. ENTER STEVE SPURRIER: Spurrier knew this was a huge advantage for UGA and had the schedule changed so they now have had the week off before the GA game 17 of the last 20 years. I not saying UF wouldn’t still have a lead over us the last 20 years as nobody was better that Spurrier during the 90’s – but it would not be 17 wins out of the last 20 years.

Georgia should win this one, How come everybody stops counting at 1990 and never talks about the sixties, seventies and eighties -i.e. the Dooley years before the Spurrier years) when Georgia won about every years as nature intended. Dooley is now gone, but so is Spurrier. So are the nineties.

It doesn’t come down to Offense, Defense or Special Teams. Both teams have studs for players, both teams have accomplished coaches, both have successes and struggles to deal with on and off of the field. Come Saturday at 3:30, whichever team is tired of the talk, the finger pointing, the critics, the on and off again fans is the team that will man up and do something about it. I say its the Dawgs for the simple reason that losing the past 48 out of 50 by an average score of 40 points (Exagerrated) would get on my Damn nerves to the point to where I would say enough is enough. Prime opportunity to do something about it come Saturday. Put on your pads, helments and buckle your chinstraps extra tight and go make some dang plays and before you know it a new streak will begin.
Go Dawgs!!! 31-14

The florida run is over—the Dawgs will win this game easy and take control of this series for a long time. Meyer can’t win without tebow–their offense is probably the worst in the SEC. Brantley’s terrible and the Ga D will eat him alive. Dawgs 40 fl 10!!!!! Dawgs–back on top!!!!!!!!

Georgia is not the same team they were the first 3-4 weeks and I hope Florida doesn’t pick this weekend to wake up…. The National media ( not AJC or bloggers on here) have all said this team is horrible. These Bulldogs will bring out their best, But they are struggling and won’t have all fixed by Saturday…..We have a chance…..A good one

My hits don’t make more UGA articles happen, but I have no problem commenting onthe dawgs. I read the Jacket articles and post too. I have really enjoyed Ken S covering the Ga STATE. I read thoes too and comment sometimes too. I do Live Braves and Falcon game blogs but I don’t posst on Braves and Falcon daily articles all the time.
If only HITS on AJC.com were the factor on how many articles are written about UGA then how do you explain all the UGA articles when is was just a print medium?

As a Gator fan, I just don’t see a Gator win this year. The Gators have not performed well in ANY phase of the game this season. Even when the Dogs were struggling, UGA had a few guys that were going all out and playing well (A. Murray comes to mind). Look for UGA to go up early, like 17-0 in the first quarter and cruise to an easy victory. Only way UGA loses is if the team of the last 2 years shows up. Good luck Dawgs.

We have had a good chance before, we have had the mental edge before, we have had the open week before, we have had all us Bulldawgs running off at the mouth before. Result is always the same: Gators win and all us Bulldawgs sleek back to ATL, tail tucked. Woof friggin Woof, at least their is always Georgia Tech to whoop up on after the Big Turkey.

Pretty clear that POAD is more obsessed with UGA than even the biggest UGA supporters-that and he has a curious amount of free time.
Jeff, We get that it’s all about page views but you’ll have to rely on POAD as I’m the latest to be driven away. These boards could be great fun but instead they become completely childish (at least by page 2 or 3).

gdawg84 look at the time of page 2 posts. They were after work hours and during the Boise St v La Tech game. Not much traffic on the blog for that game.
Since you refferenced me can you tell me for sure if Boykin is now the punt returner or is it still Logan? I hear at one time AJ would try punt returning but I don’t think that has happened yet. Has AJ tried Punt returning?
DAmn the rain is coming down. The deer in the front pasture just crossed the drive to lay under the lean too shelter. Yep, kicking their [rear] starts with D. We can’t get pushed around, we’ve gotta not blow assignments, and we’ve gotta show we can tackle the guys who don’t go down easy. I think our rushing defense stats are deceiving in that regard. The KY RB had a pretty good game against us. We haven’t quite filled the shoes of our 3 DTs who graduated and went to the NFL last year.
Stuff the run, don’t give up big plays on broken assignments, and force some turnovers. That’s how we’ll turn this series back the way it’s supposed to be!

5150, Boykin doesn’t return punts, I don’t know why. Branden Smith is supposed to be back for this one and that’s been his job. AJ has returned a couple and Richt said he may get some looks there this week. Logan Gray calls the fair catches when the punt is expected to land inside the 20 and no return is on.
I don’t think it will matter for this one. The Florida punter has maybe the best hang time in the nation. Nobody returns punts against him. A good kickoff return is more likely — hopefully the Gators won’t score much and there will be few opportunities there.

This year’s rendition on the Georgia-Florida series is as even as it gets. The Gators are a little better defensively across the board but the Bulldogs offset that by being better offensively, especially at quaterback and receiver. In factoring offense and defense, UGA gets the edge but when all is factored in, meaning Meyer is simply a better coach and schemer than Richt, you have as even a game as this series has ever seen.

No doubt about the defense stepping up but the
main reason for the Dawgs shortcomings in Jax
under the CMR regime, has been the Gators defense,
handcuffing the Dawgs offense look at ‘02,’03,05,’06
It was pretty much the lack of offense that did the
Dawgs in. And most of those yrs Charlie Strong was
the Gators DC that had the Dawgs number. He’s not gonna
be on the sidelines this yr and it’ll be huge factor
in the Dawgs offensive success vs. the Gators!

I would like to think that the Dawgs will break through this week against the Gators, but after the game UGA’s once-insurmountable lead in wins will have dwindled to 47-to-40.
‘Way back in the early ’90’s, some wise head came out in print saying that Florida would be the S.E.C.’s king in future years, for a variety of reasons. They would displace Alabama as the perennial top of the heap. That has pretty much happened, even though LSU and Tennessee have a look-in every now and then. I fear this Saturday will be more of the same.
