Dogs’ key to beating Gators: QB, defense or something else?

Urban Meyer was more relaxed before last year's Georgia game than he will be Saturday.

Urban Meyer was more relaxed before last year's Georgia game than he will be Saturday.

ATHENS — Just arrived in Happy Town, where the football team has won three straight, the basketball team is considered a conference dark horse and the outside of Stegeman Coliseum is almost completely encircled by glass panels. (OK. Still looks like an old barn with a new shine. But not bad.)

It’s Mark Richt news conference day and I’m planning on writing something about Georgia-Florida later. The focus will be on what I believe is the key to not only this game but the key to affirming that the Bulldogs really are headed in the right direction this season and beyond.

What is biggest key for Georgia in Florida game?

Loading ... Loading ...

The answer is . . . well, you’ll just have to wait. I know. I’m such a tease.

If you haven’t heard, the Dogs actually are favored in this game for the first time since 2004, according to Todd Fuhrman of the Caesars Place Race and Sportsbook in Las Vegas. That year, they were 6½ point favorites and won (and covered) 31-24.

This year Georgia is favored by three. Sounds strange, doesn’t it, given that the Dogs have lost 17 of the last 20 meetings and the last two by a combined score of 90-27? But a winning streak (even over the soft competition of Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Kentucky) has altered some perceptions in Athens and, maybe more importantly, the Gators are a train wreck. They’ve lost three straight regular season games for the first time since 1988 and coach Urban Meyer’s vaunted offense is ranked 89th in the nation.

So here’s the question of the day, until I post the column later: What is the biggest key to beating Florida? I’ve put up a poll, but here are the choices. You can only pick one.

♦ QUARTERBACK: Aaron Murray (12 touchdowns, three interceptions, 1,766 yards) has been great for Georgia. John Brantley (six touchdowns, five interceptions, 1,266 yards) has been mediocre for the Florida. Is it as simple as Murray outplaying Brantley?

♦ RUNNING GAME: The formerly suspended Washaun Ealey, starting the last two games for the suspended Caleb King, rushed for 280 yards and six touchdowns against Vanderbilt and Kentucky. Florida has struggled to run the ball. Is it as simple as the Dogs controlling the ball with the running game and winning?

♦ DEFENSE: What to think? Florida is struggling (they scored seven points in a loss to Mississippi State and six in a loss at Alabama) and there’s no question Georgia has made some progress. But how worrisome is it that Kentucky rolled up 31 points and 423 yards (353 passing) last week? Clearly there are still some holes.

♦ SPECIAL TEAMS: Rivalry games often turn on freakish plays like a long return or a blocked punt.

♦ TURNOVERS: See special teams.

So those are your choices. I know which way I’m going. Until then, what do you think? I’ll check back shortly.

Running game. Keep that UF defense on the field and get it tired. Hopefully build up a lead of a touchdown or two and make Brantley have to beat you with his arm in the 2nd half.

The key will be AJ Green. He is the best player on the field & will be the determining factor in this game. I am cautiously optimistic that our defense can force some turnovers or not give up big chunks of yardage based on how UF has played, but seeing as this is a HUGE rivalry game and in effect an elimination game in the SEC East, I’m thinking we get UF’s best shot. It will come down to who can make more plays & #8 in the red & black will lead UGA to victory

I’m expecting a last-minute end-around pass by our big tight end, Richard Appleby, to the speedy wideout Gene Washington . . . Wait . . . What? . . . That was in 1975? . . . Sorry. My bad. . . Well, my other choice would be steady quarterback play on the part of young Mr. Murray.

The key is what UGA’s attitude is. We always play tight and not to lose down there (with 2007 the lone exception). If they can go down there and be confident and take care of business, UGA should come away with a win.

The key to the game will be how UGA handles the new looks Urban throws their way after the bye week. He did in 2005 and he will do again this year- UGA needs to be prepared to see something they haven’t seen on film. They will get Urban’s best shot so they need to be ready for anything.

Defense is the key. We almost gave the win away last week, but their coach gave us a TD early with the awful decision to go for it on 4th down, and that proved big. Our defense was terrible in the 4th quarter.

RxDawg

October 26th, 2010

I say running game. If you look at UGA’s up and down offensive year, it all came down to running the ball. If we can’t run, our offense sputters and it’s that simple.

Defense is massively important, but our defense has been a lot more stable than our offense. Also, Florida has a pretty good D-line and so I say if we can have success running the football that is the key to a win in Jacksonvile.

Now you have perfect football analogy from Rx free of charge.

Us Dawgs are delusional if we think florida/Meyer won’t come up with something to score points. They will run more spread option to try and take advantage of Demps and Rainey’s speed and hide Brantley’s ability. Burton will play a lot at QB IMO.

UGA has to push the gas pedal and never let up. No conservative play calling this week. Full guns. We must score 35 or more to win this game. This will be the most exciting and high scoring UGA/Fla game in quite sometime.

i say pass defense. CUM has said they have made some modifications to the offense, which i think he’s meaning to say, “they obviously have a hard time covering people, it seems they just cover a small area while staring into the backfield and WR’s are able to be wide open, therefore, we will line up in the shot-gun and throw the ball.”…i’m betting Brantley has his “break-out game” by throwing for 350+ yds..question is, do we win with that happening…I’m still trying to decide..

dawgfacedboy

Defense- since AJ has come back our offense has been nearly unstoppable. Look at the Colorado game, x amount of series he’s on the field produced 400+ yds of offense, x amount of series he wasn’t on the field (hammy problem) produced -19 yds of offense. Having AJ on the field opens up the running game. There is no more excuses for them not being able to run the ball.

Defense has to play better. Houston and Boykin can’t do it all.

Dawgs win if they leave the locker room thinking they can win. They have the better team at this point in the season. Meyer ( and Timmy by phone, sic) will have them foaming at the mouth. But, you still gotta play football……. The line in Vegas is purely based on what they have seen the last 2-3 weeks. A surging Georgia team…..and a floundering Florida team. Playcalling. Namely, aggressive playcalling. Richt and the staff coach scared in this game (one exception, 2007). Open up the offense and don’t slow down.

Mike Smith

October 26th, 2010
12:29 pm

Defense is the key for UGA, not just in this game, but going forward. It must continue to improve. This series had gotten back to close games until Martinez’s defense collapsed the last two years. Tough defense was a trademark of Richt’s success prior to 2008.

Grantham’s D has done a much better job, but there is still a lot of improvement needed. Yes, UK put up a lot of yardage and 31 pts, but 14 of that came in the 4th quarter after it was a 41-17 ballgame. When it mattered, the D was there and forced 4 UK turnovers. They cannot get lax against UF and allow them a break out game.

I would also like to see Mike Bobo open up the offense more and stay with it. If Bobo bottles up the offense in a conservative play-action gameplan again, it will struggle against UF’s D. UGA has been at its best offensively this year when Bobo doesn’t bottle it up.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking two years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Florida will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 25, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

and while this game will help determine who will “win” the east, the reality of the situation is that no matter who wins the east they are going to get absolutely destroyed in the SEC championship by the west div. champ.. sure SC beat Bama: but when/if they play that game again in Dec, who would take SC to win again?

Turnovers have made the difference in the last three games. Turnovers (in our favor) will make our offense look better than it is and will hide our defensive issues. They will also provide us momentum and CONFIDENCE, which in this series is no small thing. Winning the turnover battle allows us to only have 123 yds passing and score 44 points. It allows us to give up over 400 yds of total offense and still win the game.

I think the biggest key is expecting to win. The way this game has been going, sometimes you’d think the only logical explanation is that there’s a curse on us. Things that never happen, happen. Will Aaron Murray throw 5 picks? Will AJ drop TD passes? Will Brantley have a career day? Will Butler shank every punt?

The biggest key is mental. If we play our game, play physical, and don’t turn the ball over, we shouldn’t have trouble getting the win.

Urban essentially announced that Rainey would play for the Georgia game the day that he let him back on the team. Like most football coaches, Meyer would rather win than do the right thing. What Rainey did trumps ALL of the arrests by Georgia players over the last two years. Even the Mettenberger thing was just unwanted advances toward a woman (i.e., no Big Ben situation there). I think the University is as much to blame as Urban Meyer, though. The University should have stepped in and kicked him out of school and taken the responsibility away from Meyer. If Rainey does make good on his threat, the University of Florida will be sued faster the Jeff Demps can run the 40.

Jeff,

There is another factor to consider that will determine the outcome of the game.

The officiating crew.

If Penn Wagers and his band show up in Jacksonville, we might as well turn off the TV. There will be a big call early in the game that will hurt UGA and will swing the momentum toward the gators.

2008-Tebow throws pick and Wagers calls a penalty on our defensive lineman for blocking and getting his hand caught up inside the facemask of the florida offensive lineman while they were engaged in hand to hand combat. Any good honest official would have made that a no call.

2008-He ignores Brandon Spikes pushing Moreno into the dirt well after the play ended and the tackle had been made. This set the tone for dirty play all afternoon that he let florida get away with. Continued the momentum swing.

Penn Wagers is a crook. He hates UGA. He hates Mark Richt.

I’m calling you out Mr. Wagers.

If you are in Jacksonville Saturday, you owe UGA an honest game.

The key for UGA will be the play of UGA’s defensive backs. If they can cover UF recivers then UGA will win the game. Also the entire team needs to play hard for 4 quarters not just a half like the Kentucky game. That falls on the coaching (Richt) to make them play hard the entire game.

Pass rush and pass defense must improve especially the backfield where no one seems to be able to cover anybody. Little Red Riding Hood and Little Bo Peet could complete passes to anybody on the UGA defensive backfield which has sprung a leak after being so highly touted in pre-season. Georgia also needs to throw and complete passes to their heralded tight ends and also to running backs out of the backfield which are normally covered by a slower linebacker. Bobo needs to start mixing up his offensive play calling as Florida will be ready to stop the run and the swing passes to AJ so run his routes long this game, fake the swing pass and hit the fly pattern from there.

Always more than 1 Key to any game… Need to get a little more sophisticated in the polling AJC ….

Can usually count on winning the game if you win the turnover by +2. So that is important.

However that alone will not win this game for us. Gotta have a balanced attack on O (BoBo) that utilizes all of our strengths …. AJ, tight ends, and a good dose of running WE and CK that keeps the UF D somewhat guessing and off balance. A one deminsional running attack with our 3-4 basic running plays and I am afraid the UF D will eat our lunch. Mix up …Open up the Offense.

Our D also has to tighten up and play smart, especially in the secondary. We all know that UM has studied our weaknesses and found a number of plays that will try to exploit each one. Gotta man up on D and limit the breakdowns.

We can win the QB battle IF the O line protects Murray.

We win the special teams so long as we dont try to suprise UF with going back to the short kick offs.

THE KEY: It’s a tie for red-zone efficiency and 3rd down defense. When we get the ball inside their 20, we need to come away with TDs 75% of the time, and FGs the rest of the time. And for God’s sake, get off the field on 3rd down. Early in the year, teams were converting too many on the ground. Now that we’ve shored that up a bit, they’re converting too many through the air on 3rd and long. We need to hold them under 40% on 3rd down. And it wouldn’t hurt if we had some help from “old lady luck.”

SERIOUSLY – do not fool yourself – The cocktail party this year features two slumping programs – so plenty of alcohol will be consumed as both teams are drowning their sorrows!

AS for Florida – really like our chances!!
Why?
– off week to prepare and freshen some legs!!
– A bad Florida team is still superior to a good UGA team.
– This is a BAD UGA team – and Dogs will get blown out in the second half.

Is UGA improving?
– maybe a little – but the pass defense is really bad and Florida will exploit, exploit, exploit.
– UGA Defense gives up yards and points early and late. I predict the same this Saturday.

I really think last years UGA team would beat this years UGA team. Honest opinion. UGA will be 3-5 in the SEC when all is said and done.

There’s rarely a “one thing,” Jeff, as you know. But if you must put it in those terms, let’s say “Turnovers.” If Ga keeps playing “good hands” ball, they win. I think Addazio (quite logically) decides to put pressure on our secondary, but Brantley’s nerves betray him in another big game and that results in a couple of picks. Murray apparently is nerveless, so our only worry is whether the running backs cough it up, and lately they have not. I do not agree with others that this is a particularly bad UF team (they beat UK worse than we did and kept MSU closer), but the Turnover battle gives it to the Dawgs. And take the points, even if they get run up to 10.

Here is Tebow’s motivational pre game speech for Saturday. Better cross off the undefeated season yet again ……

“To the fans and everybody in Gator Nation, I’m sorry. I’m extremely sorry. We were hoping for an undefeated season. That was my goal, something Florida has never done here. I promise you one thing, a lot of good will come out of this. You will never see any player in the entire country play as hard as I will play the rest of the season. You will never see someone push the rest of the team as hard as I will push everybody the rest of the season. You will never see a team play harder than we will the rest of the season. God bless.”

I do agree the Dogs are playing well right now and could go on a tear, however, based on the lack of coaching (i.e.CMR, Grantham and Bobo) you will most likely be outcoached, thus another one in the L column.

Look, UGA has had great talent over the past 10 years, but has failed to do anything with it. Van Gorder was the one who got UGA on the winning streak, then he left for Jax and everything went south. Your AD and overall management did not place enough emphasis on defense, which is the crux of the current problem.

I agree that Florida opened with 4 easy ones, including UT and KY, which confirms the fact that UGA is only on a short winning streak due to weak opponents. What I am driving at that UT goes on the road against Cal and UCLA and loses to so called weak Pac-10, now Pac-12. UGA goes on the road and gets drilled by OSU in Stillwater.

This is not about Florida, but about UGA and their lack of confidence and winning percentages.

Don’t bet against a winning streak.

Even though the Las Vegas oddsmakers say Georgia is a 3-point favorite against Florida this weekend, there are more than a few things working in the Gators’ favor.

The most obvious one is how they’ve dominated this rivalry. Florida has won 17 of the last 20 meetings.

But Florida coach Urban Meyer has a few things working in his favor, too.

The Gators are coming off a bye, and Meyer is 31-3 (.912) in his career when having more than a week to prepare for a game, and that includes a 16-1 record at Florida.

Also, he’s 16-1 against Florida’s traditional rivals (Florida State, Georgia, Miami and Tennessee) with eight consecutive wins. His only loss came to Georgia in 2007 when the Bulldogs won 42-30.

Remember 2008 when the Dogs dropped in the polls the first 2 weeks, even though they won their first 2 games? Yep, that was because of weak opponents and lack of respect by the polls, even prior to the BCS. However, no one in Athens wants to talk about it.

I will not deny florida dominated us in the 90′S…In the 2000’s though we have clearly had better football teams and still managed to lose the game, or a key player like DJ Shockley gets hurt one year. The good news is I really believe we are fixing to get the upper hand on the Gators because mcgarity will not allow us to continue to lose to them year in and year out. The bad news is saturday we have the better football team and I believe we will manage to lose this game too.

We will score points if Boo Boo doesn’t get cute. Just keep the UF D off balance..pass on first down, play action etc..Also do we have ANY trick plays? Might be a good time to pull one off. I think the key to the game is whether or defense can do ANYTHING.

He beat Alabama, unlike UGA getting throttled by Alabama 2008 at home, College Gameday, do you want to talk about that ass kicking?

If there’s any year that we can beat Floriduh it should be this year. I think it could be a blowout if we play like we have the past few weeks. If not UF will find some way to win because we always seem to be snake-bit when it comes to the gayturs. I hope we win, but 3-17 is an ugly record against them.

“But how worrisome is it that Kentucky rolled up 31 points and 423 yards (353 passing) last week? Clearly there are still some holes”

it would be more worrisome had South Carolina not given up the same point total /401 total, 329 passing/ (the same SC team that gave up only 21 to Alabama). It’s to be expected that SEC teams would play tough at home.

And what it really comes down to is, if ya can’t stop …. at least try to out score them!

UGA2002

Uh, the 3 hour infomercial from ESPN was trumped by Miami Heat vs Celtics. Nobody cares. Really, why is BOI above TCU anyways and why not go independent and start playing fluff schedules so as to ensure you’re in position with a few sympathetic BCS spoilers to play for a national title game based not only off a win against a lousy and historically lousy VaTech team and really primarily off beating a team 5 years ago that everyone beats in big bowls and who didn’t even want to play but had beaten BOI minus a few trick plays run at the end of the game to make up for sharp talent differential. BOI might be good, probably would’ win the SEC East this year when UF, UT and UGA all suck, but the means by which they are trying to get to the NC game should be ridiculed and have them leapfrogged by even 2 loss teams.

UGA2002

October 27th, 2010

I know how we can beat UF, send the entire team out to celebrate on the field after our first TD and then tear down the FG post. Oh wait, don’t do that. I forgot how the next year went and something about timeouts or something. All I care about is UGA long term and long term is lousy with CMR in charge and this current gang we’ve got that want to see if they can out arrest UF players. Something tells me once CMR is gone we’ll find out that we lack talented players, seems to happen everytime a coach is fired. I don’t know how they mask it so well.

BTW, that Heisman trophy probable winner over there in Auburn, the one that started out at UF and won a national title last year and looks as if he might get to have 3 rings from 3 different teams in 3 years, yeah that guy, was he not a Georgia (College Park) native? How come he didn’t chose UGA the first time or even the second time? Oh wait, we had Murray!!!! OH BOY! 6′1 kid thinks he can act like that 6′5 250lb kid.

On defense…dont give up the big play…let Fla make mistakes.

On offense…OL must win the battle up front.

Also….I get the feeling there is going to be a fight between players before the game. This is not in Ga’s best interest. Dont give Florida any reason to change there overall psche as a team. There not playing well so lets keep it that way.

There is no key needed as there is no lock on the door. The winner will run through the wide open door with creative offense, the loser will try to run “cute” plays looking for the key. Final score Winner 41, loser 40.

It has been 20 years….and that IS a long time….and a 4-4 record does not indicate a pendelum swing. Neither does the young talent on the Gators…and the recruiting class they are putting together again this year, expecially with the nations top QB who CAN run the spread extremely well on his way to Gainesville. Yep, the Dawgs better win this year or it might be a REAL long time before they win again.

To all who haven’t ever played football in your lives let me enlighten you. The teams that are rolling with 3 straight wins don’t want a week off. The team with three straight losses doesn’t want a week off because it gives them to much time to reflect on what has gone wrong. Ga by 10 and the winning takes us to the East championship.

The running game. The dawgs have righted their ship largely due to an improved running game. When they establish the run they control the clock and the tempo of the game, and can mix in some play action passing. Aaron Murray can worry more about managing the game than winning it himself. Controlling the clock also reduces the amount of offensive possessions for the Gators, which is always a good thing.

tampagator and gatormeatball, so you think that this is our first and “ONLY” chance year of beating your gators? Assess that position, really. Look who we have coming back next year with experience and look who you have coming back/particularly at QB!. The mystic of your gators not losing is gone. Once that mindset takes place you become vulnerable. For how long, no one knows. We DAWGS are definitely in the building mode right now on OFFENSE and defense, while, it may be a while for fl, in my opinion, to bounce back. I predicted last year in mid-season, you may remember, that fl (minus Tebow) would lose 4-5 with Brantley this season. You and other gator faithfuls implied that it was nonsense and that Brantley would bring a more pro-set, balanced approach to fl’s offense. Hopefully, Georgia will do its part in bringing a 4-5 lost season to fl INTO reality. Turnovers will tell the story. Here’s hoping we win that area of battle. Houston, dial Brantley up, and dial him often. I do expect Brantley to release the ball though repeatedly within 2 sec.s of snap underneath. Coach Grantham plan accordingly. Make him be looking for 7:00 PM and the game finally over. Go DAWGS!!!

If our turnover margin is positive after the first half, the players get to wear black socks and red skull caps under their helmet in the second half. If Murray hasn’t thrown a pick in the first quarter, he gets to dress up like the Giants pitcher Brian Wilson for the rest of the game. If our first team defense allows fewer than 175 rushing yards against our second team offense in Friday’s scrimmage, they get to do elaborate high-fives and suggestive dance moves right in front of Florida’s bench in the pre-game Saturday.
We totally got this one.

If Rainey and Demps are full tilt, probably the Gators.

However, Green and Murray will have a thing or two to say about that. Georgia needs to stay away from being predictable in the passing game b/c Florida’s DBs are too good. If they force young Murray into hurried throws there will be lots of picks and a route. If Georgia can get a rythym to their running game and pass when least expected, they have a shot.

TampaGator,
No disrespect intended but, even though UF has won the last 18 of 21 and the gators are still behind in the overall series, I think I can see why you guys rub in the the wins everytime. That being said watch out.. sometimes these rivalry games are streaky and come and go in cycles. times could be a-changing. Just an observation.
This is going to be a close one this year.
