Is the BCS championship party finally over for SEC?

Will an SEC team get its hands on the BCS "Coaches' Trophy" this bowl season?

Will an SEC team get its hands on BCS "Coaches' Trophy" this year?

The BCS championship game was designed to determine the best college football team in the land. What it mostly has done is reaffirm the best conference in the land.

SEC teams have won the last four titles and the most overall (six) since the BCS championship began in 1998.

The conference standings of BCS games look like Godzilla vs. Bambi.

Ready? Listed in order of wins: SEC 6-0, Big 12 2-5, ACC 1-2, Big East 1-2, Big Ten 1-2, Pacific 10 1-1 (and USC’s win has been detonated by NCAA probation).

With that as a backdrop, here’s what the SEC is looking at today: The possible end of the party. The first BCS rankings came out Sunday night and there are three teams — Oklahoma, Oregon and Boise State — before you get to the first entry from the SEC (Auburn). A lot can happen in the next seven weeks (conference championship games included). But right now odds are against an SEC team making it into the BCS national title game.

Here is how things lay out for the three SEC teams with a title game shot (including their BCS ranking):

4. Auburn (7-0): If the Tigers win out, they almost certainly will make it into the game because of their strength of schedule. But that means defeating LSU, Alabama (road), Mississippi and Georgia. What are the odds of that?

6. LSU (7-0): LSU also has the strength of schedule thing going for it. But Les Miles has walked on hot coals all season and his luck may be running out: The Tigers’ next two games are at Auburn and against Alabama. The regular season’s final game on the schedule: at Arkansas. It’s not going to be easy.

8. Alabama (6-1): The Tide was upset by South Carolina two weeks ago. In addition to the aforementioned meetings against Auburn and at LSU, a meeting with Mississippi State suddenly doesn’t look like a gimme. (Oh, there’s also that game against Georgia State.)

Here’s where we get back to the argument: Is a one-loss SEC team more deserving to get into a title game than an undefeated team from the WAC or Mountain West?

Compare Auburn’s, LSU’s and Alabama’s remaining schedules with other schools near the top of the BCS rankings:

1.  Oklahoma (6-0):  The Sooners already have beaten Florida State and Texas and have only two difficult games remaining: at Missouri this week and against Oklahoma State at the end of the year, as well as the potential Big 12 title game.

2.  Oregon (6-0):  The Ducks’ biggest win has been over No. 9 Stanford.  It has only one currently ranked opponent left on the schedule (Arizona at home), although road games at USC and at rival Oregon State at the end of the year won’t be easy.

3.  Boise State (6-0):  This is stacked for the Broncos. Their remaining schedule is like Cupcake Heaven: Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, Idaho, Fresno State, Nevada, Utah State — Nevada (6-1) being the only good team.

5. TCU (7-0): The Horned Frogs also have only one tough opponent left: at Utah (which is No. 9 on the BCS list).

7.  Michigan State (7-0): If the Spartans already have beaten Wisconsin and Michigan and don’t play Ohio State. can win at Iowa in two weeks, there’s not another threat on their schedule.

So there it is. Do you agree things look tough for the SEC? And let’s get back to the annual debate:  Should a one-loss SEC school get into the title game over an undefeated school from a lesser conference?

The entire BCS rankings:

Team BCS Average
1 Oklahoma .9215
2 Oregon .8921
3 Boise State .8898
4 Auburn .8641
5 TCU .8573
6 LSU .8245
7 Michigan State .7628
8 Alabama .6654
9 Utah .6540
10 Ohio State .5726
11 Missouri .5491
12 Stanford .5374
13 Wisconsin .5335
14 Oklahoma State .5261
15 Iowa .4824
16 Nebraska .4295
17 Florida State .4267
18 Arizona .3807
19 Texas .2214
20 West Virginia .1812
21 South Carolina .1555

Auburn flexes BCS muscles, down goes No. 1 (again), more Snaps

Time to put Auburn in BCS title conversation

The shootout unfolded, just like we expected. It was Cam Newton outscoring … Tyler Wilson? OK, so no one could have predicted Ryan Mallett’s backup would duel, at least for a while, and look every bit the equal of the starting quarterbacks in Auburn’s 65-43 win over Arkansas

What we learned in the SEC: Week 7

1. Newton for Heisman: As fate would have it, the seventh week of the season a year ago was when a player from the state of Alabama thrust his name to the top of the Heisman Trophy charts with a signature game. Alabama’s Mark Ingram had 246 yards rushing in a 20-6 win over South Carolina, a performance that announced to the college football world once and for all that Ingram was the real deal. We all know how that turned out. Fast forward to this past Saturday — the seventh week of the 2010 season — and it was Auburn’s Cam Newton making perhaps his strongest case yet why he’s college football’s most outstanding player with 328 yards of total offense, three rushing touchdowns and one passing. There’s nobody else in the country quite like Newton. For that matter, it’s debatable whether or not there’s ever been anybody quite like him in the SEC. You’re talking about a 6-foot-6, 250-pound quarterback with tailback speed, tailback moves and an NFL-caliber arm. But what sets him apart is his toughness. In his past two games, he’s carried the ball 53 times. Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said following the 65-43 win over Arkansas that there was really no way of knowing just how tough Newton was in the preseason because they didn’t allow him to be hit. Well, he’s doing the hitting now. Just ask Arkansas linebacker Jerico Nelson, who was flattened by Newton on his way to his first touchdown run.

Jeff,
Please don’t prepetuate the nonsense of Oregon beating a #9 Stanford as some amazing feat.
Stanford was ranked #16 the week before this game. The pollsters moved them up 7 places to #9 after they beat a 1-3 Notre Dame team. This was done so that ABC / ESPN could generate more hype about this game occuring during Saturday night primetime. Thus they could say “A Top 10 match up”. When was the last time the PAC10 can claim a match up, in conference, of Top 10 teams?

The winner of the AU / LSU battle this weekend will be in the top 3 or maybe even to the 2 spot.

A one loss should get in over TCU and Boise State. But Michigan State and Oregon and Oklahoma should all get in above a one loss SEC team if they are undefeated. No way Auburn runs the table. Even the refs horrible instant replay calls on Saturday will not last forever. Their defense will fail them at some point. Still, if it come down to TCU or Boise and one other conference undefeated, you have to give the strength of schedule to an SEC team and let them hop over TCU and Boise to play an Oregon or Oklahoma or Michigan State.

Slaton’s record night stuns pro-Georgia crowd at Sugar Bowl

Georgia had the home-field advantage. West Virginia had the chip on its shoulder.

Steve Slaton rushed for a record 204 yards and the No. 11 Mountaineers gave a much-needed boost to the beleaguered Big East, upsetting eighth-ranked Georgia 38-35 Monday night in the first Nokia Sugar Bowl played outside of New Orleans.

Talking as much trash on this board as you have, knowing that the success you are bragging about is entirely due to a single player is ignorant.

Even St. Tebow got his bell rung against lowly Kentucky. You never know when your running QB is going to take an awkward shot.

I am not saying our team is good…thus my “Not because our dawgs are good” qualifyer. But they are getting better. Your posts tell me that you are great at picking out one part of a post to take issue with but comprehension of the post over-all is clearly lacking.

If I was an Auburn fan, which you may be–in addition to being a Tech Troll, I would not be talking so loud just yet. I would also not want to play a UGA team with nothing to lose. Seems like a poor UGA team put it all together to upset a pretty good Auburn team a few years ago.

Auburn has nothing to lose. Everyone is talking about how they will lose week after week. No one expected them to do anything. If anyone has everything to lose it’s Alabama.

Most of the teams that are ahead of an SEC team don’t really play anybody, so they really shouldn’t be ranked that high. They play a weak schedule and beat up on lesser teams and then make it to a BCS championship. How fair is that? SEC teams have their hands full just playing each other. I think that if Auburn continues to win, they should definitely be a candidate for the BCS championship. Boise State hadn’t played anyone all year.
