Will an SEC team get its hands on BCS "Coaches' Trophy" this year?
The BCS championship game was designed to determine the best college football team in the land. What it mostly has done is reaffirm the best conference in the land.
SEC teams have won the last four titles and the most overall (six) since the BCS championship began in 1998.
The conference standings of BCS games look like Godzilla vs. Bambi.
Ready? Listed in order of wins: SEC 6-0, Big 12 2-5, ACC 1-2, Big East 1-2, Big Ten 1-2, Pacific 10 1-1 (and USC’s win has been detonated by NCAA probation).
With that as a backdrop, here’s what the SEC is looking at today: The possible end of the party. The first BCS rankings came out Sunday night and there are three teams — Oklahoma, Oregon and Boise State — before you get to the first entry from the SEC (Auburn). A lot can happen in the next seven weeks (conference championship games included). But right now odds are against an SEC team making it into the BCS national title game.
Here is how things lay out for the three SEC teams with a title game shot (including their BCS ranking):
4. Auburn (7-0): If the Tigers win out, they almost certainly will make it into the game because of their strength of schedule. But that means defeating LSU, Alabama (road), Mississippi and Georgia. What are the odds of that?
6. LSU (7-0): LSU also has the strength of schedule thing going for it. But Les Miles has walked on hot coals all season and his luck may be running out: The Tigers’ next two games are at Auburn and against Alabama. The regular season’s final game on the schedule: at Arkansas. It’s not going to be easy.
8. Alabama (6-1): The Tide was upset by South Carolina two weeks ago. In addition to the aforementioned meetings against Auburn and at LSU, a meeting with Mississippi State suddenly doesn’t look like a gimme. (Oh, there’s also that game against Georgia State.)
Here’s where we get back to the argument: Is a one-loss SEC team more deserving to get into a title game than an undefeated team from the WAC or Mountain West?
Compare Auburn’s, LSU’s and Alabama’s remaining schedules with other schools near the top of the BCS rankings:
1. Oklahoma (6-0): The Sooners already have beaten Florida State and Texas and have only two difficult games remaining: at Missouri this week and against Oklahoma State at the end of the year, as well as the potential Big 12 title game.
2. Oregon (6-0): The Ducks’ biggest win has been over No. 9 Stanford. It has only one currently ranked opponent left on the schedule (Arizona at home), although road games at USC and at rival Oregon State at the end of the year won’t be easy.
3. Boise State (6-0): This is stacked for the Broncos. Their remaining schedule is like Cupcake Heaven: Louisiana Tech, Hawaii, Idaho, Fresno State, Nevada, Utah State — Nevada (6-1) being the only good team.
5. TCU (7-0): The Horned Frogs also have only one tough opponent left: at Utah (which is No. 9 on the BCS list).
7. Michigan State (7-0): If the Spartans already have beaten Wisconsin and Michigan and don’t play Ohio State. can win at Iowa in two weeks, there’s not another threat on their schedule.
So there it is. Do you agree things look tough for the SEC? And let’s get back to the annual debate: Should a one-loss SEC school get into the title game over an undefeated school from a lesser conference?
The entire BCS rankings:
| Team | BCS Average | |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Oklahoma | .9215 |
| 2 | Oregon | .8921 |
| 3 | Boise State | .8898 |
| 4 | Auburn | .8641 |
| 5 | TCU | .8573 |
| 6 | LSU | .8245 |
| 7 | Michigan State | .7628 |
| 8 | Alabama | .6654 |
| 9 | Utah | .6540 |
| 10 | Ohio State | .5726 |
| 11 | Missouri | .5491 |
| 12 | Stanford | .5374 |
| 13 | Wisconsin | .5335 |
| 14 | Oklahoma State | .5261 |
| 15 | Iowa | .4824 |
| 16 | Nebraska | .4295 |
| 17 | Florida State | .4267 |
| 18 | Arizona | .3807 |
| 19 | Texas | .2214 |
| 20 | West Virginia | .1812 |
| 21 | South Carolina | .1555 |
| 22 | Kansas State | .1422 |
| 23 | Arkansas | .1302 |
| 24 | Mississippi State | .1253 |
| 25 | Virginia Tech | .0658 |

Considering how this year has gone I wouldn’t be surprised to see every SEC team with at least 2 losses this year. This might become the norm here for a couple of seasons

Nice article Schultz-ie, but we won’t have time to cover it on today’s show because it’s ICE HOCKEY season baby! We are the voice of the Thrashers! We’re contractually obligated to run 90 second ice hockey commercials and to spend chunks of time on ice hockey instead of college and pro football. Oh, and with Kincaid’s Phillies in the NLCS, we’ll probably interrupt our non-stop ice hockey coverage for a few moments to talk Phillies baseball.

Auburn (one player) and LSU are pretenders. Auburn should’ve lost to Ky and Miss St. LSU’s offense is pathetic but has been good enough. Only Bama would be deserving with one loss. Ok will probably lose as will Oregon. Its a mess. But NO WAY Boise should ever be in the title game, as good as they play. they play two ranked teams and NONE on the road and NONE back to back. Same with TCU.

The “War Eagle” / Tigers insult. How original.
I guess it is appropriate that UGA’s mascot is the most unhealthy breed of dog on the planet. Pretty representative of the fanbase. Lacks intelligence, difficulty breating, can’t move very well…

kral—you mean every ONE game you win each decade against GA. Winning a joke conference is nice, especially after you had gotten RUN in your last game by a team finishing middle of the pack in the SEC. Oh…and how did that bowl game go? I thought so. How many BCS bowl victories does GT have? I thought so….NONE.

Insult? Auburn is one player like Florida was. Not syaing they aren’t good but National Championship? Arks backup threw for 400 yards. That is Gerogia like and you know how bad GA is. You can’t win with that defense. LSU is on borrowed time. Aub should beat them.

It is comical that a yellow maggott bring sup a game from TWO years ago to hang their hat on. Comical. Say it all really, the inferiority complex. When we suck against Florida (and we do) I admit it. Because we will be back. But GT is ALWAYS the patsy in the rivalry and always will be despite your incredible victories over Wake and Maryland….

Just stating it like it is. GT has nothing to hang their hat on so they bring up a meaningless game where they won ONCE in a decade. That is like a Georgia fan taunting Florida that they beat Tebow one year. There is not one fact that GT can bring up to show its superiority over GA. Wins, wins in the rivalry, wins each decade, BCS wins, conference titles, stadium, NFL players, top 10 rankings…..oh yeah 45-42. Nice.

This is awesome. I’m an Auburn alum. No one whines and complains and insults teams that are losing. Y’all must be plenty scared of the Tigers this year. LOTS of inane and immature insults.
Bottom line … I do not think Auburn has a national title level team this year. But, I think we can beat LSU and then who knows what happens? It has been a very long time since I’ve seen someone take over game after game and WILL his team to win like Cameron Newton has. He’s fun to watch. Yes, the defense is porous at best, but the offense is very exciting and can light up the scoreboard almost every week. (Clemson and Mississippi State are the only teams to hold us under 35 so far.)
But, I’ll be the first to say it, if we want success with Cam, it had better happen this year. I do not think he’ll leave for the NFL (not a polished passer yet) but here is the 2011 schedule:
ROAD: Clemson, South Carolina, LSU, Arkansas, Georgia. All are losable.
HOME: Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and three “others.”
Again, we’d better enjoy this success as long as we can!
War Eagle! Auburn 31, LSU 17.

I agree Jeff, the party is finally over for the SEC, although Alabama could sneak back into the hunt for the BCS. However, one team does not make a conference. Also, when you consider that a 2-3 team is in the hunt for the SEC east, that does not bode well for respect.
The only teams making any noise in the SEC are LSU and Alabama. Auburn could be the real deal, but I am sure they will run out of gas once Cam Newton is injured. Miles will outcoach Cheese Nip who has played only 1 or 2 competitive games, otherwise, they have been walkovers just like UGA in the past 2 games.

This is where the Midwestern bias of the sports media rears its ugly head again. There is no doubt since the conferences realigned in 1992 that the SEC has been the most dominating conference by far. Even two years the BCS left out a more deserving SEC team in the title game, yet the SEC still has the most national championships.
You could all but hear the voters’ hearts breaking when Wisconsin took it to an annually overrated/overhyped Ohio St. team. This was the biased media’s chance to start ramming Big 10 “dominance” down our throats again and inexcusably cramming OSU into yet another undeserved title game.
Everyone knows a two loss SEC team is more deserving at the title than a 1 loss team in any other conference, and same goes with an undefeated Boise.
These voters have been hating life since 2006 when they could no longer ignore the power of the SEC and finally ran out of excuses. Since then they have been longing to replace the SEC with the Big 10, Big 12 and even the Pac 10.
If an SEC team is not in the title game this year this will just further expose the sheer bigotry and biased of the sports media.

If Auburn is in the NC game, I don’t think Oklahoma or Oregon has a chance. But if Cam Newton is out, I don’t think Auburn has a chance. Auburn’s defense is horrible.

I just don’t see how you think Auburn has a longer shot than Alabama. For one, Auburn’s undefeated and has beaten teams already that either beat Alabama or came close to beating Alabama. Auburn’s got LSU and Bama to look forward to. I’m sorry, but I don’t think any of their defenses have what it takes to stop the Cam train. And at 6′6″ 250 lbs, I wouldn’t wait on him to get injured.

And by that, I’m admitting that their defense is legit. But Cam Newton is the greatest equalizer imaginable. Don’t forget also that our offense is very capable even without him- look at how powerful we were last year with an unmobile QB.

Derek I tend to agree with you regarding the 3 losses but Ole Miss is questionable after losing the opener to Jax State. Boise moved down to strength of scheduled or lack thereof and deserve to move down. Boise is good, especially their fast and hard hitting defense, but they need to beef up that schedule.
OU deserves to be number one after they destroyed FSU, and beat Texas. OU is the real deal, but they could hiccup down the road, however, I suspect OU will mostly destroy anything in their path, including an SEC opponent.
If anyone thinks the Big 12 is weak, then line it up and let’s get it on. UGA went to Stillwater last year and got their helmets handed to them. Basically if you want to gain credibility, then schedule some Texas, OU or even Mizzou then you will get style points, but only if you win.

“WDE” I am glad that you are excited about your team this year as well as you should be. But lets not get ahead of ourselves here. Auburn still has LSU,GA, and Alabama left of there schedule. Auburn could drop at least one and at worse case all 3 and slip in to oblivion just like GA is right now. Too much football left to be played for you to be talking trash on a GA football blog. If Cam Newton gets hurt you guys are screwed! Your defense is horrible and we all know that defense wins Championships. Meet us back on this blog after you win the three games I mentioned above and i will be the first to give congrats on winning the West, until then, go play with your tummy stick and leave this blog to Adults.

Alphare, you get your best team from the SEC against OU in the NC game and they will mow them down this year. OU has had problems in the past, but they are firing on all 8 cylinders this year, so just tell OU when and where and they will be there.
SEC clingons continue to argue they have the best conference, but just schedule Texas, OU, OSU, or even TT as a road opener, then come see me. Put your money where your mouth is. I grew up in the midwest and believe me, they can hit harder and they are just as fast or faster. Where do you think your college quarterbacks are coming from (i.e. Stafford)?
