LIVE BLOG: Can Braves find some offense (and defense)?

The Braves are hoping for different scene tonight in San Francisco. (AP photo)

SAN FRANCISCO — Hello. We begin this evening with some good news, Braves fans. Tim Lincecum is not pitching. So the rest should be easy, right?

OK. Maybe not. The Braves and their depleted lineup aren’t much of a threat against most pitchers, let alone a two-time Cy Young Award winner. But if they have any hope of winning this National League Divisional Series, they’ll have to be far more patient at the plate tonight against Matt Cain than they were in Thursday’s series opener against Lincecum, who had 14 strikeouts and allowed only two hits in a complete-game shutout.

Here are the Braves taking batting practice. We'll find out if it helps.

Here are the Braves taking batting practice. We'll find out if it helps.

Hitting coach Terry Pendleton clearly believes the Braves could have done better. When the word “great” was used in a question about Lincecum, Pendleton responded: “The guy [Roy Halladay] in Philly the other night was great. That’s a no-hitter. That’s great.”

This much is certain: There’s a ton of pressure on every Braves pitcher, knowing one run can decide it. Derek Lowe and four relievers allowed the Giants only one run and five hits, but Lincecum reduced them to an afterthought.

Just a few other things about tonight:

Tommy Hanson will start for the Braves, as expected. You may have heard or read that he was hit in the eye by a batted ball in batting practice Thursday and immediately went to the clubhouse to be examined. Obviously, he’s fine. (But if he walks out to the mound with an eye patch and a parrot on his shoulder, we’ll know something is wrong). Hanson has allowed only one run in his last three starts (18 2/3 innings).

♦ Manager Bobby Cox made only one lineup change – Melky Cabrera replaces Matt Diaz in left field and will bat fifth. The batting order:

1. Omar Infante (5).
2. Jason Heyward (9).
3. Derrek Lee (3).
4. Brian McCann (2).
5. Melky Cabrera (7).
6. Brooks Conrad (4).
7. Alex Gonzalez (6).
8. Rick Ankiel (8).
9. Tommy Hanson (1).

♦ Many readers continue to wonder why Troy Glaus is not getting into the lineup. To repeat, Glaus’s knees are so shot that he can’t play in the field and there’s not much left of him at the plate, either. But here’s something else that our David O’Brien dug up. Glaus is only 13 for 80 (.163) with one homer at AT&T Park. (He’s also 1 for 10 in his career against Cain.)

Finally, as mentioned in this space last  night, I don’t believe the Braves lost the series opener because of a blown call but because they couldn’t hit or field. If they score a run off Lincecum, it doesn’t come down to one run. And if Omar Infante can knock down a ground ball in the fourth inning, Buster Posey never scores. That said– yes, baseball needs to expand its use of instant replay.

That’s it for now. I’ll check back with you shortly.

Do you believe the Braves can get out of here with a split?

Terry, that is a good poem. Whatever happened to your brother, former Heavy weight Champ?

Melky is going to turn around this abysmal offense? Think Bobby needs to stick with Matty D, at least his lifetime average indicates some hope. Melky, not so much.

But in the end, it comes down to DLee and McCann. They need to have a great series for us to have a chance.

The Braves can win this game, but they have to play good fundamental baseball. Move runners, work the counts and something we haven’t been able to do lately, play flawless defense. The pitching will be there. Lets get 2 or 3 early and let Tommy do his thing.

I don’t want Glaus playing, but if he can’t hit or field, why is he on the roster?

I was wondering why Diaz was playing against a righty instead of Melky, or better yet, Hinske. I think we need to get Hinske 3 AB’s a game. He’s got more power than any of the platoon we’ve been playing. Is he that much worse than any of them in the outfield? I say put him in there!

This is the closest I’ve ever been to “thirst”. Wouldn’t it be nice if Cin/Phil got into a beanball fracas and players on both sides got hurt. (Sorry, all’s fair in love and war, and this is war). I know Philly fans were already accusing Hudson of intentionally hurting two of their players. Need a couple from both teams since we don’t know who we will play yet.

Lincecum is a great pitcher, but we do need to keep his performance in some kind of perspective. This is one of the worst offenses that has ever been in the postseason. They’ve made rookie pitchers look like Cy Young since the all-star break, so while i don’t want to take anything away from Lincecum, there are a lot of pitchers who can shut down the Braves like he did. I’ll be stunned if we score a run against Cain.

This just has to be the most punchless Braves playoff team ever. This offense looks as bad as I’ve ever seen. We have absolutely no one that I would consider causes concern to any opposing pitcher. If the best we have to offer are McCann and Heyward then we are in a heap of trouble, like who didn’t already know that. Tim Hudson should be pitching tonight with our backs truly against the wall. Bobby is putting all the pressure on the kid Hanson when Huddy would be the best choice because of his experience in the playoffs. Bobby always managed like it was the regular season even in the playoffs which I think is the biggest reason we have only one world series championship.

I guess it is too late for this year, but I would like to see a manager and hitting coach who had a rule that if you took a called third strike you were fined. Watching DLee take three down the middle to end the game last night was frustrating to say the least. If you honestly don’t think you can hit the guy tell the manager and let him send someone else up there. I just don’t get watching three pass by, if you are a homerun threat and it is a one run game.

The headline’s an interesting question, Jeff.

And optimistic, when you consider we’re starting two scrubs in the outfield, an injured used-to-be at first, a poor-hitting third baseman at second, a second-baseman at third who admits he’s not comfortable there, a catcher who can’t throw anybody out, and a shortstop in a 2/40 slump who never talks a walk.

I’ve been a passionate fan for may years, but take out Heyward and McCann, and that looks like a beer-league team.

cheshire

October 8th, 2010
9:27 pm

You’re preachin’ to the choir Katherine…. I couldn’t agree with you more. The sport is an absolute mess and they are losing SO much $$$ because of it. This is why the NFL is infinitely more popular and profitable, and why football has eclipsed baseball and basketball as the favorite sport of most Americans. On opening day in baseball and basketball, almost every team is already out of it. In the NFL, you never know.

And the dumbest argument you’ll ever hear is from teams like the Yankees saying “well if teams wanted to win they should spend more $$$”. What they forget is that the only reason they have more $$$ is because they play in a city with more people and therefore more revenue. Their ability to spend more $$$ is a direct function of which city they play in, not some overwhelming desire to win.

NRBQ, good post.

The problem is that a lineup with so many weaknesses makes good hitters like McCann and Heyward completely sterile. Why should a pitcher be afraid of letting McCann get on if he knows a double play machine like Alex Gonzalez is coming up right after him? Having 2 good hitters in a lineup isn’t really better than having 0 good hitters.

Of course making it worse is the fact that our 2 best hitters completely freeze in the rare situations they do have a chance to drive anyone in, so it doesn’t make much of a difference.

I’m just stunned looking at this lineup. I don’t ever remember seeing such a weak collection of hitters playing in the postseason.

I just went back and replayed it again in slow motion, and it really looked like Huff had his foot on the first base bag as the ball hit the pocket of his glove and before Alex arrived at first.

I understand that the controversy is whether or not Huff had his foot on the bag after he caught the ball and to me it looked very close, but Alex was out.

Last night there was no doubt that Posey was out at second. Tonight’s play to me did not appear as cut and dried.

LMAO

Emmel has umpired the All-Star Game (2002); three Division Series (2002, 2003, 2006); and the 2007 American League Championship Series. Emmel also umpired the 2010 National League Division Series between the San Francisco Giants and the Atlanta Braves. As the second base umpire in Game 1 he blew a crucial call on a stolen base leading directly to the Giants only run on a two out hit in a 1-0 win.[1] He also blew a call on first base in Game 2, leading to Bobby Cox’s ejection. This umpire is currently under review by Major League Baseball for corruption.

We are all fans. We like the team. Like the players. Want the best. Hope for the best. Believe for as long as we can believe.

But this is crap. This team has all the excuses for why they are flopping at the end and in the playoffs. But someone… ahem media… needs to call out this team.

Where is McCann? Who is the leader of this team? Alex and D Lee… can you do something productive? Brooks – pick up the Darn ball? Rick can you develop any plate discipline?

No more excuses. Either play or shut up. Have some heart. These Braves are the not the same Braves who showed heart and fire and magic in the middle of the season.

These Braves are done. They got into the playoffs because of the other Braves who are now hurt, shelved, etc.

I hate the other media as they never address our excellent pitching. They only talk about Phillies, Giants, Yankees. But I have to admit it…. our team is weak and weaker.

So Steve, call a dog a dog. Have some gumption to call out these players… most will be gone in a few days any way. There will be no repercussions for your truth.

Blanco played good CF. He had finally turned into slap hitter with some on-base potential. He could score from 2nd. But instead, Wren thought Ankiel would be a secret power source that nobody else in the league had considered. We did not need Farnsworth since we essentially had Kimbrel just coming up from AAA and is a healthy Freeman more useful than a Lee who was getting an epidural the weekend we obtained him? Wow… Miranda has been a Phillies fan for a whole 10-12 years or so – Johnny Come Lately. Dude, when you’ve lived thru the bad 60’s teams w/ the Clay Dalrymple, Dick Selma, Chris Short, Roger Freed… mid-late 70’s heartbreakers with Montanez, Carlton, Luzinski, Bowa, Doyle, Schmidt, Boone & Company… and even the 1980 Champs and 1983 Wheeze Kids… Dykstra, Hollins, Daulton, Schilling teams of the 90’s… THEN you can call yourself a Phillies fan. I really like both the Phillies and the Braves (born in South Jersey) and generally root for the Braves cause I’m a ‘homer’. Thankfully this year, I’ve got 2 dogs in the Race – unfortunately one appears to be washing out WAY too early… :-?

Has there ever been a series where a team gets swept and did not score a single run? If not, the Braves will make history! Their offense looks clueless and if their management bring back this same garbage and tell the fans this is what we are going to win with, then they should be fired or the games should be boycott by the fans. By the way Posey is clearly better than Heyward! This guy is getting hits all over the place and Heyward cant make contact.

Call to Action

October 8th, 2010
10:38 pm

It is time for Atlanta fans to flex their muscles… If they have any. We are fed up with mediocrity and we are fed up with crappy umpiring in the post season. First it was the guy who let Minnesota’s first baseman pull Lonnie Smith off the bag, which cost us Game 6 and the 1991 World Series. Then it was fatass Eric Gregg who called strikes a foot outside while Livan Hernandez cruised to eliminate the Braves in the late 90’s. I could go on and on. Our newspapers and broadcast stations go to easy on failure, no matter where it rears its head. Paul Emmel, the umpire, has hurt the Braves big
time in Games 1 & 2. Paul Emmel should know that he is not welcome in our state! Our fans should make it unbearable for him to stand in Turner field. MLB should put in a replay to compensate for this embarrassing display by umpires. They have materially impacted 5 games in the playoffs so far. Fans should rise up and demand some competence in our national pastime, and that movement should start when Paul Emmels comes to Turner field.

According to the Interwebs, the record for fewest runs in a playoff series is two, set by the 1966 Dodgers (that was a seven game series, FYI). Dodgers got single runs in the second and third innings of the first game and then did not score the rest of the series.

Half our offense should be in AAA. And another 2 are just not good hitters anymore. Infante and McCann are the only decent hitters on the team and Heyward is just too young to handle this. And when your opposing pitcher gets an rbi hit and you can’t score, well this team is done.

Why are these Braves SO cold at the plate? We swing at the junk pitches and watch the ones we should be crushing just fly right by down the middle. Need a new hitting coach… Terry OBVIOUSLY isnt getting the job done. I agree he doesnt have much to work with but damn.. 2 and 3 hits a game just isnt gonna give us a chance to win. Tell them not to swing unless the damn ball is across the plate and we might start getting hits. All we swing at is balls in the dirt. turn around and see where the catcher is setting up if you absolutely have to to get an advantage. We SUCK!!!!

So sad the season has to come to this. But you can’t say we didn’t see it coming. This team has been on life support ever since Chipper went down, and then the plugged got pulled when Prado went out. We’ve been dying a very slow ignomious death.

The worst part is that, because of the recency effect, people tend to place far more importance on information or events which are most recent, discounting most of what came before. And what came before was a work of managerial brilliance and amazing team chemistry. That is the season I choose to remember.

Get rid of the outfielders we have and get new ones that can field and have a big bat. Relax Braves fans. Breathe deeply. Realize that this is a 50-50 team: 50% great young talent that is going to only get better for many years to come, and 50% retreads that was all Wren could afford in filling out the roster. One more time I can agree with miranda: Turner was a total a-hole and his stupid antics (remember managing for a day, and then Messersmith wearing “Channel” on his #17 jersey?) were embarassing. Yes, he threw more money at players than anybody but the Yankees, Red Sox, and Dodgers back then. But we had mostly home-grown talent that got that money (plus Maddux and McGriff).

.849 OPS as a Brave (100 points higher than he had as a Cub)… I agree that it SEEMS like he hasn’t hit well as a Brave — maybe his hits have come in non-key situations — but he has done a respectable job and has been one of the few bright spots defensively. The Braves have an emerging core of young players, but they spend a lot less than the Phils and they spend too much money on roster spots that aren’t producing for them. That said, if the Braves were completely healthy we’d be having a completely different discussion.

.800 OPS in September, that ain’t exactly a slump.

I don’t think putting him at #2 in the order was a great idea for his development though. Can’t really blame Bobby Cox, since there isn’t anyone from 5 through 8 who deserves to be batting 2nd, but I think he would have been better off in a run-producing spot in the lineup where he would have had to been more aggressive.

A great coach once said “you are what you are”. He was right. Only two player could crack the starting lineup of one of the other playoff teams, those two being McCann and Heyward.

And I fear we might be seeing Heyward turn into Jeff Francouer right before our very eyes. His swing is so messed up right now because he’s trying to get under the ball. It’s why he’s late and hitting a lot of popups. Why haven’t you fixed this, TP? He’s been doing it since early september.

Braves have 8 rookies on this playoff roster…that alone ought to say something about the lack of talent on this team. This is a roster put together with paper clips and duct tape after all the players with big salaries either got hurt (Chipper) or played worse than AA players (Ankiel, McClouth, Kawakami). For the few signings Wren has gotten right, he sure has gotten some very wrong.

Behind Enemy Lines: Braving the Snake Hole with Jose

What better way to prepare for a treacherous series than to visit the belly of the beast. In preparation for the first Reds playoff series in 15 years, I decided to check in with my sworn enemy, Mr. Jose Miranda, to give everyone else a sense of what I have to deal with on a daily basis in Philly. Hide your women and earmuff your kids; ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Scorpion King himself…

Reed: Of all the teams in the National League, how appropriate that our teams drew eachother. Describe the general feeling of Phillies Nation on this Round 1 match-up.

Jose: The general sense and feeling I’ve been able to garner from my fellow comrades in this world of Philly dominance is that there is unfinished business that is yearning and screaming for the Phils to reach out and seize vengeance. That elephant in the room is the Yankees, we want them. The Reds symbolize the first team we will conquer, we have no concerns about Cincy in any fashion or form. The Phils are superior in every facet of the game, its not even competitive, the Reds don’t even deserve to be facing us, Cincy played in the worst division in baseball, in our division they would be a 3rd place team. Oswalt & Hamels have overpowered the Reds repeatedly, and Doc will follow suit. It’s going to be a sweep , we have no respect for your starting pitching nor your bullpen, and your hitting wont be able to keep up with the prolofic offense that the Phils wield at will.

Reed: Interesting. I didn’t ask for a lesson on run-on sentences and poor word usage (yearning? screaming? prLOFic??), but I guess life is full of surprises. To be clear, Phils fans have no respect for the same Reds starting pitching that beat them two out of three in one series and gave up a total of 5 runs in the four-game sweep (I don’t count Mike Leake’s meltdown)?

Jose: You don’t count a lot of stuff pal, your one of those “analyst” that like to constantly state “well if we disregard the one inning he gave up 10 runs to your offense then he pitched a stellar start”, that absolutely ridiculous. We have no respect for Volquez nor Cueto at this point in their careers. They’re not built for the playoffs against a force such as the Phils, their stuff is dynamic but they don’t have what it takes internally to compete with us, and Arroyo has and will never be good enough to be a high end starter for a serious title contender, period!

Reed: Astounding. In that case, what are Phillies fans MOST worried about, entering this series?

Jose: Dude we are the best team in baseball, were not worried about anything, do you not understand this?? We have to much talent, swagger, weapons, and intestinal fortitude to be worried. The only “concern” we may have is that Dusty Baker is a very respected manager that has done a good job with an inferior Reds team, much respect Dusty!

Reed: Leave it to the Satan Spawn to commend the Reds for the one aspect of the team that most Reds fans malign. Next question: What are your thoughts on Joey Votto being overlooked by Charlie Manuel in the All-Star selection process, only to go 11-for-28 (.393 BA) versus the Phils this year with 3 ding-dongs, including one to tie the game versus Brad “let’s keep the lights on a little longer” Lidge?

Jose: Votto is the most overrated player in baseball this year, dude had a great 1st half, but September is what matter and Ryan Howard has proven that’s what he does best repeatedly. Lidge was in another place mentally during the portion of the year he gave up that home run to Votto (by the way we still WON that game), Lidge has been dominant all September, the back end of our bullpen is one of the best in baseball currently. We have no concerns about the Reds top 4 hitter winning the series, I’m actually more concerned with Stubbs or Bruce going off and making this series competitive, but I’m not seriously distressed by that either.

Reed: Congratulations. By bad-mouthing Votto you should now expect 8-10 letter-bombs sent to your house with Cincinnati-area return addresses. My people don’t take kindly to those type of shenanigans when it comes to the MVP. Last question: Karl Ravich compared the Reds to a porcupine that is backed into a corner, and suggested the Phils might take a proverbial quill to the face. If you were a porcupine, or better yet, if you were the Reds, how would you attack this series, with an eye toward upsetting the reigning NL chumpions, I mean champions?

Jose: Dude if I were the Reds I would get my affairs in order, say my prayers, and tell my mom I loved her, CUZ THEY’RE ABOUT TO GET KILLED!! Better luck next time Cincy, bad luck that you got the champs, be happy to finally be in the playoffs because I sense that the Cards will bounce back next year.

Welp folks, there you have it. The man, the myth, the Antichrist: Jose Miranda. As if you needed any more reason to tune in. Here we go!

Miranda and Joe -

There is some truth to the weak fan base thing, but the true cause for the weakness of Braves fans is bigger than that. Our stadium should be on the north end of town to bring in more affluent fans. Unfortunately, our corrupt city officials keep the stadium in the middle of a ghetto. Again, it is all about spreading the wealth with the south side. That is becoming a trend in the US. Keep spreading the wealth, keep selling average. One either plays to win or you settle for the scraps you get.

There is a general rule in baseball:

when you get two strikes on you, you need to expand the strike zone.

it appears that the Braves want to walk so much that they are on their heels with two strikes and get caught looking too mmany times. Either that or someone (Cox and or TP) is telling them to take pitches. either way, they Braves lack agression in the right place and are too agressive in the wrong place.

hittins is very mental and whoever is telling the players about hitting has this team so messed up they can’t hit.

Somebody should ask that old fool Cox how he can not only play Melky over Nate or Hinske, but bat him IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LINEUP!

But, I give up asking myself these logical questions when it comes to Bobby Cox. The man has to have a roster full of All Stars and HOF to win anything and he couldn’t even do that consistantly.

No excuses Bobby lovers. Yes, the heartfelt Chipper in game interview tonight about the beloved Bobby was touching, but I can’t wait until he’s gone and he can take that coaching staff of his with him.

Jones is just excited for huntin’ season with that little grin on his kisser.

Illini – you are trained in IP, but are you actually practicing in that field?

Your assessment of me is inconsistent with that of our IP team. Perhaps that is why I have helped over 25 people become millionaires under my management. And i am just getting started. Most of the research I have seen shows a strong correlation between high team achievement and managers who hire competitive employees. Motivating and supporting them is a different matter. The reverse is also true — allowing mediocre achievement to permeate a team is detrimental to every individual team members performance. High performance organizations are self regulating.

Illini – my philo does not totally apply to loved ones, but it does to some degree. I don’t understand how you can accept mediocrity in certain affairs and not in others. The Braves problems start at the top – a cheapskates ownership that is committed to nothing more than putting a slightly better than average team on the field. Then management weeds out firey players. Our stadium is on the south side of the city to support labor from the local ghetto. Fans from the north side don’t want to drive an hour to a ghetto. Our newspaper never calls out lackluster play. Our baseball writers suck, they don’t know anything about baseball. Our team leader is a self centered redneck. Fixing that takes leadership.

AJ Burnett won’t see the mound again. Oswalt good in the NL, lets see how he looks in the big boy league. Yes Doc overall is better than CC, but the Yanks have just a little experience facing ol Doc.

Yes we still have work to do while the Phils get to coast on into the series. Must be nice playing in the NL. You will win one soon due to that fact but I think we will postpone that a year.

Call to Action: thanks for the explanation. basically agree with most of what you said. but if by “fiery players” you mean Escobar, then I have to disagree. He was over-rated and traded for the same reason that the Patriots parted ways with Randy Moss. Like Gary Bertier says to Coach Boone in Remember the Titans: “sometimes you just gotta cut a guy loose”.
