This is tourist central, where nobody is thinking about the Giants.
SAN FRANCISCO – True story. When my wife and I lived here, we went to the San Francisco County Fair one year. This isn’t your typical county fair. Farmer Ed’s 700-pound pig and Aunt Edna’s Sweet Apple Pie are not the star attractions.
Rather it was: The Fog Calling Contest.
As you might know, fog rolls in and out of San Francisco Bay daily. It’s actually a pretty cool sight, even when it’s 57 degrees on a summer night. Any way, the fog is the star here so it follows that the county fair has a fog calling contest. And so we witnessed: 1) People walking onto a stage and making “wind” sounds; 2) People making fog mating calls; 3) People saying, “Here Fog. Here Fog.” I think my favorite, was the “Fog ATM” machine walking around the grounds.
And you wonder why the politics are such a mess. (Wow! A radical, left-wing liberal with a bias media agenda actually wrote that!)
Back to San Francisco. David O’Brien and I are here to for the Braves-Giants divisional series that begins Thursday night. It took a little while to get here. Didn’t fly direct so I could save my employer some money, hoping that they would take that money and roll it into a raise — Hint. Hint. Hint. — and wound up with the connection from hell from Charlotte. Second plane was delayed because it needed an oil filter. It took forever, so I can only assume the pilot got talked into the extras — you know, wiper blames, air filter, transmission fluid. (If you follow me on Twitter and read this joke already last night, apologies.)
After everybody boarded, we had to wait another 30 minutes while they loaded the bags, which begged the question: Why couldn’t they do that during the 90-minute oil filter swap? Before the end of the flight, a very nice flight attendant tried to get us to apply for a U.S. Air credit card in exchange for a “free” plane ticket for only the $79 credit card fee. I might’ve been tempted if the “free” flight didn’t have to be on U.S. Air. (I’m not sure if the AJC likes me singling out a specific airline. But I don’t think U.S. Air advertises with us much anyway. U.S. Air! U.S. Air! U.S. Air!)
Back to baseball. Unfortunately, the Braves don’t work out until about 8 p.m. EDT. I’ll probably be writing something on game one starter Derek Lowe later. So until then, I went out this morning to take a few snapshots of my former home base. A little Digi-blog to get you warmed up . . .

Fresh crabs are kept on ice. The Braves are employing a similar strategy with Kenshin Kawakami.

Walked around an hour looking for any semblance of a sports bar. Found one. They only cared about the Red Sox.
♦

Alas, found one fan. With one sign. In one window. They're CRAZY for their Giants!
♦
OK, I’ll be back later with actual baseball stuff. By the way, I kind of like the Braves in Game 1 and the reason is one I never would have anticipated: Starting pitcher Derek Lowe. Check back later.

Loved SF, from 66-69 during the “hippie days” in Haight-Ashbury. Use to ride up and down that area taking in the sights, and BOY! what some sights to behold. My daughter was born at The Presidio Army Hospital, while I was stationed at Oakland Army Base. She cost us all of $7.75 and still have the receipt. Spent two and a half of my 3 years there. Boy, was I blessed or what? (That was during Vietnam)

Well see you later. I hope you still have your beard.
And remember, we have to pass the health care bill so you can see what’s in it!

Jaffy, liked your post, but be careful, JS is a little sensitive, as most libs and Progs are. BTW, do you know what the definition of a Progressive is? That would be a “brainless liberal”. Oh, and you misspelled the SF nut’s name. It’s Peelooser! Now, back to baseball. Braves in 4.

The AJC is going with two writers in San Francisco? Well, Jeff and the other guy, whatever his name is. Why am I getting dumped by Georgia with half the season left to play? Why not co-mascots . . . white a$$ed and brown a$$ed? The new Uga may be white a$$ed but he’s also inbred. He will be an embarrassment to all of us before it’s over. I suspect he has a weak bladder and a huge oversized heart and, of course, there is the rumor of a third ear.

The Phillies are so much better than the braves its not even funny. When a guy gets to third, they hit a fly ball to drive him in. The Braves don’t understand the concept of lifting the ball when there is a guy on third.

JASon, lifing a ball with a man on third??
Ankiel cannot even put the ball in play, with a runner on third and less than 2 outs, almost anything other than a strike out scores the run and he cannot even make contact!!!
But he will be in the line up!

Jeffy,
Really liked the blog about San Fran. I kind of like Lowe, too, for a couple of reasons…
#1 – His postseason ERA
#2 – His record/era vs the Giants (esp in their park)
#3 – Lincecum’s first postseason appearance (I think I read that somewhere lol)
GO BRAVES!

Actually, that’s 3.5, but who’s counting? I mean, if you can write about your old glory days in SAn Fran in a Braves’ blog, then I can leave out my accuracy regarding Reasons Lowe and the Braves win Game 1.

Thanks for the early blog , Jeff. What crabs? You got crabs? And aren’t we all glad Derek Lowe and his large salary are starting game 1 for the Braves instead of A.J. Burnett or Javier Vazquez and theirs. my how yesterday’s fan screeds disappear with the test of time. Likewise, if Mark Richt resigns in disgust at the end of the season, will we be hearing from any of the bloggers calling for his scalp when UGa goes another 20 years without an SEC title?

Was visiting over in Sonoma this weekend. Wife and I were at the Sonoma Fall Harvest Fair Wine Tasting event Sunday. 150 wineries to taste. Before we tasted damn near all of them it seems, there was a buzz then some clapping and then some cheering in the hall. The Giants just clinched…they’ll be ready and represented…I just want the Braves to win at least one game in SF in that cold air…
